Message From the President Hello SBLBSHP members, Happy Summer! It has been an exciting year so far. We have already had many events that we want to share about in this newsletter. A shout out to all our board of directors as it truly has been an honor to work with such a dedicated group of people who have spent many long hours organizing and planning all the events behind the scenes. Our Clinical Affairs team successfully completed the Western States CE Series, where we had residents from the local hospitals deliver their Western States presentations to our members at Kaiser Bellflower and Torrance Memorial. The Industry Relations team organized educational presentations on Tecentriq for the treatment of lung cancer and Repatha for lowering levels of cholesterol.

Summer 2019
In the meantime, our Public Relations team set up volunteers to serve the community at Long Beach Rescue Mission and educate students at Aloha Elementary Career Day. These community events could not have happened without the help of our pharmacists in our chapter, who spent their own time going out to volunteer and help our students. While we work hard, we also play hard, as evidenced by our social event this summer. We went to a candle-making class and then ate and hung out at a brewery. Our Social Chair team did a great job planning and allowing our SBLB family and friends to gather and have fun. If you have any new ideas for future social events please let us know as we look forward to knowing you on a more personal level while hanging out with you and your family! Our events can’t happen without the people who dedicated their time as volunteers. Please join us in congratulating our graduating residents Sophie Cheng, Grace Kim, and Tandeep Bains who have been balancing residency rotations while holding board positions and helping our team. We would also like to congratulate our new pharmacy graduates Jenny Truong and Yen Doan who held board positions while they were busy with pharmacy school and studying for exams. All the new graduates have done a fantastic job! If anyone knows of any job opportunities please consider these new graduates who showed dedication to our pharmacy profession. We are looking forward to seeing you at Seminar, where this year it will be right in our backyard at Disneyland! In preparation for Seminar our delegates will be preparing for the Regional Delegates Conference and our chapter will also hold telephone conferences where our five SBLB delegates will discuss policy proposals and voice our stand as a chapter on every policy. If you are interested in the discussion please join us over the phone to share your thoughts. These policies are very important in defining and guiding where CSHP stands on various issues as an organization, which will in turn impact your practice as a pharmacist. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you would like to be more involved in our chapter or have feedback on how we can better engage you as our member. Our board always welcomes new faces and we would love for you to join our board. As we are planning for another strong year, please let us know if you would be interested in running for our 2020 Board of Directors! Sincerely, Rosalin Preechakul, PharmD, APh, BCPS 2019 SBLBSHP President

2019 Summer Social - Candles & Beers By Angela Lee, PharmD, BCPS, Social Co-Chair Our annual summer social is an opportunity for our members to step away from pharmacy, relax, catch up with old pals, and make new friends. This year's social took place on Saturday, July 20th, at CRAFTED handmade marketplace and Brouwerij West brewery in San Pedro. The first activity of the day was candle making, where everyone got to make customized candles to take home mixing scent, choosing color, and creating names. Using the scale to measure out scented oil took some of us back to the compounding lab during pharmacy school. It took about an hour for the candles to set, and we were ecstatic to see the final products - our own handcrafted candles with amazing fragrance, pretty color, and professional labeling. Many thanks to the Banter & Bliss candle company for hosting us! The candle making session was followed by lunch and drinks at the brewery in the same plaza. From ales and IPA to saison, there were plenty of beer choices as well as non-alcoholic beverages for everyone to enjoy. Exploring this hidden gem of South Bay together was a relaxing conclusion to our event. Thank you to our members and mentees who came out to spend your afternoon with us, and we hope to see more of you at our events in future!

Public Relations Update Your Neighborhood Superheroes By Alicia Wong, PharmD On June 4, 2019, SBLBSHP was invited to the Aloha Health Medical Academy to showcase what it means to be a pharmacist to 60 elementary students ages 9 through 11 years old. Stephanie Lee and Kayla Nguyen, two first year pharmacy students from Western University of Health Sciences, created a fun interactive presentation titled, “Captain Pharmacist: Your Neighborhood Superheroes”. Dr. Jack Chen, a member of the SBLBSHP chapter and a credentialed K-8 grade science educator, was the perfect preceptor for the event. The students learned about who pharmacists are, where they are found, what they do, why they choose the profession, and how to become one. By the end of the presentation, students were inspired, and they wrote hand-written notes expressing their gratitude and aspirations to one day becoming future pharmacists.

Long Beach Rescue Mission Presentations Diet and Exercise By Margarita Buchinskaya, Director of Healthy Living and Alternative Medicine, American Pharmacy Student Alliance at University of Southern California On May 10th, 2019, USC School of Pharmacy’s CSHP chapter lead a presentation at the Long Beach Rescue Mission (LBRM). LBRM is a local homeless shelter that provides food, shelter, clothing, and spiritual guidance to the homeless and low-income populations in Long Beach. The topic of the presentation given on May 10th by USC’s Director of Healthy Living was focused on diet and exercise. Some of the learning objectives of the presentation included ways to make healthier dietary choices given available resources, incorporating MyPlate guidelines into meals, learning how to read the Nutrition Facts Label on packaged goods, and finding enjoyable ways to get physically active. There was a total of about 20 participants who were all very engaged and interested in the topic, as many of them opened up about struggling to improve their chronic health conditions. This was a great experience and the USC CSHP Chapter looks forward to collaborating more with the Long Beach Rescue Mission in the future!
Smoking Cessation and Asthma By Grace Kim, PharmD, Public Relations Chair Our third Long Beach Rescue Mission (LBRM) event took place on Friday, July 12th where we had Stephanie Nguyen and Mitchell Timbol from KGI School of Pharmacy present about smoking cessation and asthma. Dr. Elaine Nguyen from American University of Health Sciences volunteered to be the preceptor for the students. We had a successful event with about 20 participants who were engaged and focused throughout the presentation. We are incredibly grateful to have a wonderful team of committed preceptors and students. If students and preceptors are interested in joining us in bringing health awareness to the Long Beach community, self-care presentations are occurring the 2nd Friday of every other month. Mock Western States Presentations By Sophie Cheng, PharmD, Educational Affairs Chair
Our chapter held our annual Mock Western States CE Series this year on May 7th, 2019 and May 15th, 2019. The events took place at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower and Torrance Memorial Medical Center, respectively, and featured 11 residents from Kaiser Permanente Downey, Long Beach Memorial, VA Long Beach, and Kaiser Permanente South Bay. The residents had the opportunity to practice their Western States Conference and VISN presentations as well as receive valuable feedback from our members. At the same time, our members were able to learn about a variety of topics ranging from chemotherapy dose rounding to procalcitonin-guided antibiotic use. Each event was well attended with about 30 members at each session. We look forward to continuing this annual series for years to come!

EDUCATIONAL DINNERS By Matthew Kamada, PharmD, BCPS, Industrial Relations Chair On June 25th, 2019 our chapter partnered with Genentech to host a promotional dinner on Tecentriq at the Chart House in Redondo Beach. The location was amazing, with the ocean waves in the background of the talk. Patricia Jakel, OCN from UCLA Medical Center was the speaker and gave us a very practical lecture regarding Tecentriq’s role in the treatment of lung cancer. A sincere “Thank You” goes out to Jennifer Oliver (Pharmaceutical Representative for Genentech) for organizing this event with our chapter. We have several more promotional dinners coming soon, please make time to join us since our industry partners have been such a big help to the life of our chapter. Many of the dinners do have minimum RSVPs that need to be met so we encourage your participation as a SBLBSHP member.

Legislation Update By John McGady, PharmD, Legal Affairs Chair
There are currently 2959 bills in both houses of the legislature that are either active, in suspense, passed, failed, died or vetoed. There are 53 that specifically call out and have some impact on either pharmacists or pharmacies. Today, the spotlight will focus on the status of two CSHP co-sponsored bills, SB-159, HIV: pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis and AB 1131, Medi-Cal: comprehensive medication management.
HIV Pre-exposure and Post-exposure Prophylaxis
SB 159
This bill would authorize a pharmacist to initiate and furnish pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis if a pharmacist determines the patient meets the clinical criteria consistent with federal guidelines and completes a training program approved by the board. SB-159 passed all of the senate committees as well as the full senate and is currently in the assembly appropriations committee with recommendation to move to the consent calendar. This means that: (1) the bill has received zero “no votes in committee and (2) has had no opposition expressed by any person present at the committee hearing. This bodes well for passage of this bill once the legislature resumes on August 12 after the summer recess.
Medi-Cal: Comprehensive Medication Management
AB 1131
This bill would make comprehensive medication management (CMM) a covered pharmacist service under the Medi-Cal program. The bill would require CMM services to be offered to any beneficiary who is referred by a physician as having a medical condition that could benefit from CMM services and who meets one or more of the following criteria:

✦ Prescribed 8 or more prescription drugs or biologics, collectively by multiple prescribers, to treat or prevent 2 or more chronic medical conditions ✦ Discharged from a hospital, rehabilitation facility, or long-term health care facility with at least one chronic medical condition being treated with prescription drugs ✦ Failed to achieve therapeutic goals and experiencing adverse effects that are potentially medication related This bill would also require Medi-Cal to establish reimbursement rates and rate billing codes for CMM services provided by a license pharmacist. With minor amendments, this bill unanimously passed all of the assembly committees as well as the general assembly in May 2019. It passed the senate health committee and is currently placed in the suspense file of the senate appropriations committee. The suspense file is a holding placing for bills with significant fiscal impacts. Bills are generally held on the suspense file before each fiscal deadline so that each House can evaluate the total impacts to the state. Bills which are moved out of suspense then go to the floor for a vote while bills held in suspense die. We will be tracking the status of this bill and are optimistic that it will move to the senate floor for a full vote.
