Message from the President To our SBLBSHP members, I am very honored to serve as the President of SBLBSHP for 2019. Thank you for being a CSHP member and choosing South Bay-Long Beach as your home chapter. For those whom I did not get a chance to meet, my name is Rosalin Preechakul, and I got involved with CSHP when I was a student at USC School of Pharmacy. I attended my first SBLBSHP board meeting when I was a PGYI resident at VA West Los Angeles and got involved with the chapter as treasurer, delegate, clinical affairs chair, and president-elect. I currently work for Kaiser Permanente out of the Downey service area as an ambulatory care pharmacist. SBLBSHP has always been my professional home and it is my goal to make SBLBSHP your professional home as well. After your immediate family and your work family, we also want to be a part of your family too! We want to offer you

educational and social activities where you can have fun, relax, and learn at the same time. This year is a very special year for our chapter as we have SBLBSHP members Steve Thompson serving as our CSHP president and Lisa Lum as CSHP president-elect. This just goes to show the energy and potential of our SBLBSHP members. We have a full year packed with CE and educational events for our members. I’m very honored to work with strong board members this year with a variety of experiences and expertise. Leading our Educational Affairs Committee, we have Lauren Alfano from Cedars Sinai, May Mak from Chapman University, and Michelle Ding from Kaiser Permanente. Our Educational Affairs team has already started working on multiple programs in parallel with our Industry Relations Committee led by Matt Kamada from Kaiser Permanente and Angela Jeong from Agilon Health. Our communications committee headed by Leslie Tanaka from VA Long Beach and Joanne Lin from Kaiser Permanente has been doing a great job with face lifting our newsletters. Please check our website, read our quarterly newsletters, and follow us on Facebook for the latest updates. If you ever want to communicate directly with our team please feel free to email us for any comments or feedback. To kick off our first meeting of the year in January, CSHP’s CEO Loriann De Martini visited our chapter to meet with our Board of Directors and presented the strategic goals of CSHP as an organization and the direction in which we are headed. The strategic priorities and goals of CSHP are to be leaders in promoting wellness, patient safety, and optimal use of medications while establishing strategic healthcare collaboration and partnerships. As of January 2019, there are about 4,000 CSHP members including pharmacists, pharmacy students, and pharmacy technicians. With the expanding number of members, CSHP is anticipating future needs of its membership by streamlining its governance and procedures. CSHP is proposing to select its leadership based on practice interest rather than geographical location. CSHP is an active supporter of PPC-PAC, also known as Pharmacy Professionals of California Political Action Committee, which provides a connection to political candidates in order to protect the interests of pharmacists. As a local chapter, SBLB is also promoting PPC-PAC and has plans to set up meetings with candidates and legislatures in order to share with them our values and goals. Thank you for allowing SBLBSHP to be a part of your family. Please stay tuned for our upcoming events and I am looking forward to hearing from you and meeting you at our future events! Sincerely, Rosalin Preechakul, PharmD, APh, BCPS 2019 SBLBSHP President

Every holiday season, the board gets together to celebrate our accomplishments and friendship over dinner in lieu of our regular board meeting. It was a fun evening with great food and even better company. Thank you 2018 board for all your hard work and camaraderie, and we already look forward to the next festive board dinner with the new 2019 board!

SBLBSHP Installation Banquet & Night With Industry By: Emily Chang, PharmD, Nikki Watanabe, PharmD, and Melissa Yong, PharmD, Social Chairs The 39th Annual Night with Industry and Installation Banquet was a fun-filled and successful night with over 76 attendees and 12 vendors. The event was held at the fanfavorite Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo, California, which did not disappoint. Our theme this year was “sports and our guests sure dressed to impress! There were plenty of sports jerseys from basketball to hockey to entertain the night with a friendly, yet competitive atmosphere. The event began with the Night With Industry, which highlighted informative displays from our committed pharmaceutical vendors. Members enjoyed cocktails and delicious appetizers while engaging in stimulating conversations with the various pharmaceutical representatives. Members commented that they enjoyed learning about the newest therapeutic options in a variety of disease states. A large number of our guests impressively completed our vendor crossword puzzle and were entered into a special raffle drawing. Our chapter would like to thank Achaogen, Amgen, Equashield, Genentech, Grifols, Incyte, Mallinckrodt, Nephron, Novartis, Sanofi, Takeda Oncology, and Tesaro for their support and participation in our program. At the conclusion of the Night with Industry portion of the evening, guests made their way to the Installation Banquet. Timothy Chou (Webmaster & Membership Chair), Michael Palaroan (Western University Student Representative), and Melissa Yong (Social Chair) collaborated to host the banquet and welcomed members as they enjoyed a delicious BBQ dinner. The chapter was especially honored and thankful that several distinguished guests attended the event including Steve Thompson, CSHP President, Lisa Lum, CSHP President-Elect, Janice Fischer, SBLBSHP founding president, and many past SBLBSHP Presidents.

Our members and guests each shared inspiring words regarding the future of our ever-changing profession. We were honored to have Steve Thompson install the 2019 SBLBSHP Board. Immediate-past president, Angela Lee, gave a great speech and reflected upon her many accomplishments during her term. Angela also introduced the new president, Rosalin Preechakul, who gave an empowering speech regarding the strengths of the chapter as well as the goals she aims to achieve during her presidency. Additionally, Kenn Horowitz awarded the 2018 Kelly P. Hales Pharmacist of the Year award to Cindy Odegard for her exemplary contribution to the pharmacy profession. Sandy On was also recognized with the Student of the Year award for her involvement with SBLBSHP. We also recognized the 2018 mentees for their commitment to the program as well as the 2018 mentors for volunteering their time and sharing their wisdom with their mentees. In addition to the wonderful speeches and presentations, the event was sprinkled with over 30 raffle prizes including our grand prize, which was a one-year membership to CSHP. Lastly, thank you to all of our members and student volunteers who took the time to attend and facilitate our event. It was refreshing to see such great attendance from Chapman, KGI, LLU, UOP, USC, and Western University student pharmacists as well. It was a wonderful opportunity to network and also recognize our chapter’s many achievements this year!

Legislative Update By John McGady, MS, PharmD, BCPS, Legal Affairs Chair To kick off 2019 I thought it might be interesting to provide an overview of the California legislative process. The legislative sessions run for 2 years with the most current, 2017-2018, just ending. Bills are introduced by either the assembly or the senate (ABxxxx or SBxxxx respectively) and die after the session ends if they were not passed or repealed. The new session just started (2019-2020) and already 273 assembly bills and 164 senate bills have been introduced. Many are re-introductions from the prior session as well as several budgetrelated bills. For your interest, see below for a diagram of the legislation lifecycle process.

The next page includes updates to laws and regulations that affect the practice of pharmacy, including some recent law changes and also pending legislation and regulatory changes to keep an eye on. Just a reminder, the California Pharmacy Legislative Day will be on April 2nd in Sacramento. Go to the CSHP website for more information. Continued on the next page‌

University of the Pacific Chapter Updates By Jennifer Truong and Yen Doan, UOP Student Liaisons University of the Pacific has always been proud of the school’s CSHP involvement, and the start of a new school year has brought fresh vigor to the chapter. Following a hugely successful membership drive, CSHP-Pacific remains one of the largest student organizations on campus. With over 170 renewed members and 160 new members, the chapter stands at 332 students strong. The student chapter started this year with a speaker event on September 5th, inviting Dr. Bill Yee and Dr. Jennifer Cashman to campus. Dr. Yee and Dr. Cashman welcomed firstyear pharmacy students and gave an introductory peek into their work as ambulatory care pharmacists. Students had a chance to further expand their network at CSHP-Pacific’s first Shrimp Feed Fundraiser on September 22nd. Thanks to the support of the local Central Valley chapter, student board members organized a dinner fundraiser complete with drinks, games, and a silent auction. All proceeds from the night went to the Koob Vang Memorial Scholarship Fund, an annual scholarship distributed in the spring. Dr. Koob Vang was the Central Valley chapter’s pastpresident, who championed advancement of pharmacy and was a beloved mentor to students. With so many new students starting pharmacy school, maintaining a standard of professional practice is crucial. CSHP-Pacific makes every effort to facilitate the transition from undergraduate to graduate school, and most of the chapter’s autumn events are focused on training new student pharmacists. On October 22nd, CSHP-Pacific partnered with the University Career Resource Center to host its annual Networking Workshop. At this workshop, students honed their communication skills, practicing both physical composure and online LinkedIn management. 8

One could not mention CSHP involvement without mentioning Seminar. This year, 75 students from UOP attended CSHP Seminar in San Diego. Although Seminar overlapped with midterm week for Stockton students, even shy P1s ventured into San Diego for their first networking endeavors. In addition to supporting former chapter president Emily Hou in her Student Leadership Award, students chapter members also took the time to explore residency programs and attend student workshops. With this kind of dedication and drive, there’s no doubt student pharmacists will find further inspiration with CSHP. Although UOP pharmacy campus is located in Stockton, 14 third-year students are currently completing their APPE rotations in the Los Angeles/ Long Beach area. With rotations centered at the Long Beach VA, most of these students are broadening their horizons to prepare for residencies and fellowships. Despite their busy schedules, they would like to get actively involved in local networking and organizations and hopefully maintain a strong connection with SBLBSHP.

Educational Dinners By Angela Jeong, PharmD, APh, President-Elect Our chapter hosted our last promotional dinner on December 5, 2018 with a talk on “Considerations for Zejula Maintenance Treatment in Recurrent Ovarian Cancer” at The Depot. It was fun learning with a festive atmosphere! The speaker was Kate Jeffers, Pharm.D. Oncology Residency Program Director from UC Health Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO. The program was sponsored by Tai Lu from Tesaro. Tai has been a committed South Bay Long Beach Chapter sponsor for many years. We hope everyone enjoyed the 2018 educational/promotional dinner programs and we appreciated everyone taking the time to join us! We are also thankful for all our pharma sponsors that make these programs possible.

By Helena Lau, PharmD, Mentorship Chair This past year, SBLBSHP had 25 USC School of Pharmacy students paired with mentors from the chapter! The mentorship program also organized another successful Mentor-Mentee Mixer at Five O’clock Wine Bar in Long Beach after receiving great feedback from the very first mixer in 2017. The event allowed mentors and mentees to meet in person and network with other SBLBSHP members while having hors d’oeuvre and craft beer or wine. The mentorship program provides an opportunity for pharmacy professionals to contribute to the pharmacy community by cultivating relationships and helping shape students’ career trajectories. Furthermore, it has been effective in recruiting and encouraging mentees to join the SBLBSHP board upon graduation, including previous mentees Helena Lau, Joanne Lin, Tiffany Luong, and Leslie Tanaka. The success of this year’s mentorship program could only be possible with the time and support of volunteer mentors listed below. If you are interested in giving back to the future of pharmacy and volunteering your time as a mentor, please do not hesitate to contact 2019’s mentorship program committee (Helena Lau and Tiffany Luong) – for more information. The mentorship program committee is diligently planning this year’s program, including the annual Mentor-Mentee Mixer, to continue providing an enriching experience for both mentors and mentees. Any feedback, questions, comments, or concerns would be greatly appreciated for improvement. Thank you! Thank you, mentors!
