this COVID-19 pandemic. The way we work, play and family life has changed significantly. We are grateful to those who are front line pharmacists and pharmacy technicians providing direct patient care and applaud those who have had to adapt to working remotely. Personally, my team transitioned to 100% work from home within three days. All inperson patient care became virtual or telephonic. This challenge has brought my team closer from our daily virtual check-ins. We are able to meet each other’s pets, children and significant others.

Spring 2020
We have had virtual happy hours to get to know our weekend plans and our favorite beverages. My parents learned FaceTime so my sister and I can check in on them remotely. Being home more also made it the perfect time to adopt Nova, our 2-year old German Shepard from the SPCA. I look forward to hear your stories on how creative you have been to stay busy and what new skills you may have learned while at home! Even though many of our chapter activities have been on hold due to shelter at home, our chapter has adapted to this new norm. We continue to have our board meetings to discuss and plan activities but via WebEx. We had a successful continuing education program on April 28 on The Opioid Epidemic through Zoom. We will continue to support our residents with their Western State presentations virtually and provide credit to the attendees. Once social distancing is over, we will get together and have fun activities again. The silver lining is that we are able to gain new talents and find new ways to stay connected with our coworkers, friends and family. As we go through the various “phases” of this pandemic and transition back to “normal”, the SBLB board and committees are planning activities for the rest of the year.
Sincerely, Angela Jeong, PharmD, APh

USC School of Pharmacy Chapter Updates By Ruby Yang, USC School of Pharmacy Student Liaison
This year to kick off Spring, our chapter partnered with Los Angeles Mission to volunteer and give back to our local community. In total, student pharmacists helped package 2,000 utensil bundles and frozen food donations for the homeless population.
Our USC student chapter hosted our annual 2-part Residency Workshop series to help student pharmacists navigate residency showcases and the application process. During part 1 of our series, we were honored to have Dr. Kallie Amer, Cedars-Sinai Residency Program Director, and Dr. Jennifer Ko, CedarsSinai PGY-1 Resident, provide tips and tricks for applying to residency programs. On day 2, we were proud to have Dr. Samantha Yeung, our USC Clinical Translational Sciences Fellow in Cardiology, and future Dr. Brian Lee, a current P4 USC student, discuss their experiences applying to residency programs through PhORCAS. Through the Residency Workshop, we hope to help our student pharmacists be outstanding candidates in their future residency applications.

Due to the restrictions caused by COVID-19, we are taking steps to prioritize the health and safety of our members, while finding ways to continue to encourage those to pursue a residency. Our annual Residency Panel will still take place in order to give insight on how to approach the residency application process. It will be held online and feature graduating students who have matched at various programs. Despite these challenging times, the new executive board remains optimistic and unwavering, as they eagerly prepare for upcoming events.

Chapman University Chapter Updates By Nadine Saab and Danny H. Pham, Chapman University Student Liaisons
UCI Residency Director Speaker On January 29, 2020, our CSHP/ASHP-SSHP student chapter invited Dr. Mark Baje, the UCI Pharmacy Residency Director to speak with interested P1 and P2 students about the UCI Health Residency Program and what students can do to improve their chances. He discussed with the students his thought process when treating patients and how-to problem solve. He also discussed his reason for pursuing pharmacy and aimed to inspire students to never settle and always try their hardest to succeed in whatever they do.
Residency Match Panel On March 18, 2020, our CSHP/ASHP chapter hosted a residency match panel with seven P3 students who matched with a residency program. We observed the stay-at-home orders and conducted a Zoom panel meeting for all the student participants. There were set questions that each of the P3 students answered and then there was time at the end for people to ask questions. It was great to hear the different perspectives of how to prepare for residency interviews and applications. We want to congratulate all of the P3s who matched and thank everyone who joined.

Chapman University Chapter Updates Continued Second Harvest Food Bank — Orange County
On March 21, 2020, members of our student chapter, Christina Nguyen and Christopher Vu, volunteered at the Pop-Up Drive Thru Food Distribution at the Honda Center. The volunteers were given masks and t-shirts, an orientation of how the distribution works, and then split into groups with specific tasks. Essentially, there were 8 teams of 12 people where 2 people directed traffic for cars to come in and when to leave, 5 people packing food into the cars, 5 people designated to open and close the trunk of cars. The process was efficient and ensured no contamination meanwhile practicing social/ physical distancing. The food packers would place a bag of groceries with non-perishable food, a bag of potatoes, a bag of apples, kettle corn, granola, and 2 packs of Hawaiian bread. The volunteers were rewarded with free Habit Burger meals. Student volunteer, Christina Nguyen, said, “Being able to volunteer at Second Food Harvest’s Pop Up Drive Thru Food Distribution was an incredible opportunity in which we were able to feed over 4,000 families in one Saturday morning.” Since the first Pop Up Drive Thru Food Distribution on March 21, 2020, Second Food Harvest has provided food to about 16,985 cars and a total of 350,491 pounds of food.

On February 13, 2020, we had the wonderful opportunity to host our internship workshop! Students were able to ask the interns questions and gain insight into what their roles look like in various hospital pharmacies
On February 22nd, 2020, CSHP had its first health fair in collaboration with SFVSHP at the San Fernando Recreation Park - the Heart, Mind, Soul Health, and Wellness Fair! We offered blood pressure and blood glucose screenings and provided education on opioids and vaping. Our screenings helped patients bring awareness to their own health and provided them with lifestyle advice to maintain their well-being.

Western University Chapter Updates Continued On March 7th, 2020, CSHP Nutrition Committee partnered up with their local Pomona Farmers market, where they presented about Nutrition and its benefits to all the Pomona community farmer goers. The team presented an educational poster to the Pomona Community and shared information such as nutritional substitution options and conveyed the importance of portion control. Children also had the opportunity to learn by participating in nutritional bingo, drew their own MyPlate, and completed crossword puzzles
that exposed them to a variety of nutritional facts.
During the week of 4/27/2020 to 5/1/2020, WesternU’s Chapter of ASHP/CSHP dedicated this week to mental health and awareness. With the disastrous spread of the coronavirus in the U.S, there has been an increase in levels of stress and anxiety amongst our student members. We at WesternU wanted to provide our students with some relief with advice on how to cope with this through different activities such as meditation, origami, and other helpful apps for relaxation and de-stressing. Though we are all at home, we felt it was very important to reach out to our community and continue to be present to show our support for their success.
