Hello SBLBSHP members!

I hope everyone enjoyed their summer and stayed cool during the heat wave!

First of all, I would like to congratulate the 2021 SBLBSHP board, especially the immediate past-president, John McGady, for receiving the CSHP Chapter of Distinction Award. The 2021 board worked hard to bring meaningful programs to keep you updated and engaged amidst the ongoing pandemic, and this award is a well-deserved fruit of their labor. More importantly, this achievement would not have been possible without you, our members. Thank you for continuing your membership and support! (continued on next page)

NEWS

Since the last newsletter, our chapter had yet another eventful quarter! We continued to provide monthly industry educational dinners at various restaurants and they were well attended by our members each time. We hosted a very successful Joint CE Symposium with the SCSHP Chapter at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. It was a 3-hour CE program with complimentary breakfast and lunch with over 60 members from both chapters attending. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed a day of learning, networking, and good food!

As we head towards the fall season, our chapter will continue to provide our you with our monthly industry dinners. One of those dinners will be combined with a residency networking panel with UCI School of Pharmacy. Please be on the lookout for more information to come! I will be attending the CSHP Seminar in November. If any of our members will also be there, please feel free to say hi! I would love to meet you! For those of you who are also mentors in our chapter’s mentorship program, we will also be planning for an in-person mentorship mixer. It will be a great opportunity to meet and network with your mentees in-person! Finally, as we start to wrap up this year, we will be actively recruiting for next year’s board. If you are interested in being involved in our board, please feel free to email us at: sblb.shp@gmail.com. We sincerely welcome everyone to get involved! I hope everyone continues to stay safe and be well!

Sincerely, Michelle Ding, PharmD, BCPP, APh

Summer Social at the SoFi Stadium

so much interest we had a waitlist. Thank you to an anonymous donor, we were able to accommodate more members.

Quotes from attendees described the day perfectly… “Fun and informative outing with the chapter to see the SoFi stadium and check out their locker rooms and throw footballs on the field! In-n-out tailgate lunch after the guided tour was the icing on the cake!” and “It was great to be with friends and colleagues in the newest, most technologically advanced and eco-friendly stadium in the world”.

Everyone enjoyed this outdoor event and we look forward to more future outings! (check out more pictures on the next page)

On September 10, 2022, our chapter, in collaboration with the Southern California chapter (SCSHP) hosted a half-day continuing education symposium at the luxurious Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. 3 hours of CE flew by, and attendants even got a packaged lunch to take home as they departed feeling smarter and energized for the rest of weekend.

We would like to especially recognize these SBLBSHP board members who worked tirelessly for many months to plan this symposium: Michelle Ding, Jennifer West, Grant Lackey, and Matt Kamada (pictured left, name in order left to right). It was a successful joint event and we look forward to collaborating with SCSHP again in future.

Legislation Updates

CSHP focuses on a number of legislative bills that can affect the pharmacy practice. Below are a couple of the bills under review that CSHP encourages members to support.

SB 944 (Pan) – California Health Benefit Exchange: Affordability Assistance

CSHP is asking for support of SB 944

The bill would require the Exchange to implement those options for providing health care affordability assistance. The bill would require the affordability assistance to reduce cost-sharing which includes; copays, coinsurance, maximum out-of-pocket costs, and to eliminate deductibles for all benefits. The bill would specify the actuarial value of cost sharing assistance based on the income level of the enrollee and would require the Exchange to adopt standard benefit designs consistent with these specifications.

SB 866 (Wiener) – Minors: Vaccine Consent

CSHP is asking for support of SB 866

This bill would additionally authorize a minor 12 years of age or older to consent to vaccines that meet specified federal agency criteria. The bill would authorize a vaccine provider, as defined, to administer a vaccine pursuant to the bill, but would not authorize the vaccine provider to provide any service that is otherwise the vaccine provider’s scope of practice.

Recap: Industry-sponsored Educational Dinners

Our chapter has been pumping out educational dinners! Thank you so much for your attendance and willingness to collaborate with our industry partners. Time and time again, I have been told from our industry representatives that our chapter is the most engaging when it comes to educational dinners and continuing education events.

In June, our chapter learned about Lenvima as Dr. Sammy Saab came to give us a great overview of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A special thank you to Eisai (represented by Marisa Hall) for hosting. The dinner was held at the Ayers Hotel in Hawthorne.

In July, Pfizer (represented by Wendy Thompson) hosted a discussion on transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) which was taught by Dr. Fernando Mendoza. This event was held at the Miyako Hybrid Hotel and featured a great assortment of delicious Japanese food. (continued on next page)

In August we held a discussion on mild to moderate psoriasis by Dr. Michelle Ehrlich. This event was hosted at L’Opera in Long Beach by Amgen (represented by Paul Reinbach).

We will continue to roll out more opportunities to our members to further our clinical knowledge. Please try to make it out to a few of the talks!
