Message from the President (continued) SBLB-SHP supported two community events in October. Public Relations co-chairs Kirsten Law and Scott Harada arranged the events, students and preceptors. The first event was the Bread of Life health fair on October 10th. The second event was I Walk for Kids on October 18th. We had great attendance by attendees, pharmacy students and pharmacists at both events. Our Mentorship Program with USC Students continues to thrive. It has been a great success with positive feedback from both mentors and mentees. We continue to have mentees attend our monthly Board meetings. Tim Chou and Angela Lee have done an incredible job with this program. I need to recognize our Communications co-chairs Angela Lee and Amanda Wong. They do an excellent job on our newsletters! There is a lot of work that goes into publishing and keeping our members informed. Special thanks to our 2015 Board of Directors! We have great and hard individuals that makes sure our members have quality events and programs to attend. We have a great Board for 2016! It’s hard to believe 2015 is almost over. It’s been a great year! Thank you all for your membership. It’s been my pleasure to serve as your Chapter President for 2015. Cindy Odegard, PharmD SBLB-SHP President

Educate. Innovate. Elevate: 2015 CSHP Seminar in San Diego, October 8-11th By Judith Nakao, Delegate

2015 was a big year of change for CSHP but despite all of it, we were able to overcome the challenges and had a successful turn out for Seminar 2015. The 40th Annual Meeting at CSHP was held for the first time at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina this past October 8-11, 2015. We were educated with over 50 continuing education (CE) sessions for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, including programming for students as well as new practitioners. The Healthy Humorist, Dr. Brad Nieder, MD, CSP served as the opening Key note Speaker. Dr. Neider captivated the audience with his humor and reminded us that laughter is the best medicine. On Saturday, we had a panel discussion on Advanced Analytics for Fraud, Waste, and Abuse Investigations presented by three members of Kaiser Permanente’s National Compliance, Ethics & Integrity Office: Tamara Neiman, Director, National Special Investigations, Jay Loden, Assistant Director of the Information Analytics and Compliance Technology, and Mark Horowitz, Head of Fraud Control. They presented information on a topic that should be high on everyone’s list of priorities, how to reduce regulatory and compliance risk by proactively identifying drug diversion through innovative analytics. Closing Keynote Speaker was 28th State Senator Jeff Stone, Pharm.D., who was a graduate of USC School of Pharmacy. Senator Stone has decades of experience as an independent pharmacy owner. He is an example of a pharmacist who has elevated the profession by giving back to the community through his public service. He has a vision of continued elevation of the profession and community but he needs your help and engagement. As Health-System Pharmacists with our unique insight and experience we have an opportunity to work with Senator Stone to improve our communities through the legislature. (continued on next page) 3

Public Relations Happenings Recap: iWalk4...Kids By Kirsten La, Public Relations Co-Chair Members of SBLBSHP and students from the USC School of Pharmacy educated the community on hidden sugars in foods at the iWalk4…Kids walk on October 18, 2015. Various foods, including sports drinks, energy drinks, soda, orange juice, candy and fruits and vegetables were displayed on a table and their associated sugar content (in the form of sugar cubes) hidden under plastic cups. Event participants, which included kids, adults and even “Millie” the dolphin, ranked which foods had the highest sugar content. Afterwards, the plastic cups were lifted, revealing the equivalent number of sugar cubes that each food contained. Many kids were surprised, though not as surprised as the adults were, by how many sugar cubes were under each cup. Needless to say, many people left with greater awareness of the hidden sugars in their foods and a mental note to read food labels for nutritional information.

Recap: Bread of Life Church Health Fair By Michael Scott Harada, Public Relations CoChair Earlier this year, the Torrance Bread of Life Church hosted their annual health fair on October 10th. Out of 300 guests, 200 patients were screened for blood glucose and blood pressure hosted by our local USC students. SBLBSHP pharmacists Matt Kamada and Scott Harada helped to precept first and second year students on proper technique and education in order to help educate our community. Additionally, participants were also provided information packets on proper medication disposal instructions and medication adherence cards. This year's health fair was one of the biggest health fairs the church has ever hosted with over twenty vendors from various organizations. We can't wait to see what new opportunities will be available next year and we invite you to stay tuned to see how you can be involved in the action in

Recap: Annual Wine N’ Dine Trip to Lompoc By Cindy La and Marilyn Jen, Social Co-Chairs

Hello SBLBSHP! Nine members attended our annual wine trip on October 24th and it was quite an eventful day! We started off our journey bright and early at Kaiser South Bay and arrived at Lompoc for a delicious lunch at Sissy's Uptown Cafe. Afterwards, we headed over to Montemar Winery where we got a personal tour of the facilities and short educational session on winemaking by the owner, Steve. We followed up the afternoon with a few more tastings in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto before heading back to L.A. area by the evening. Overall, it was a very fun event for the nine total who attended. We wish more people could have made the event, and we are open to suggestions for future events! We can't wait to celebrate our next social event with YOU at our Installation Banquet & Night with Industry on Friday, January 29, 2016!

Recap: Biosimilars Continuing Education Program By Angela Jeong, Educational Affiars/Industry Relations Co-Chair

Dr. Yoon gave an informative continuing education program on biosimilars in September. There were active discussions throughout the lecture. The Depot is one of this chapter's favorite venues for educational programs, great food, plenty of parking and every seat in the room can see the screen and hear the speaker.

Legislative Update: A Year in Review By Daniel Kudryashov, Legal Affairs Chair,

As the legislative cycle ended in September, it is a good time to review some of the laws pertinent to pharmacy which were signed into law. A list of these laws follows below. In addition, there were several regulatory changes that were approved in 2015 by the California Board of Pharmacy. These included an updated Pharmacy Technician Application form as well as new requirement for patient centered labels for prescription drug containers. A detailed explanation of the changes can be found on the Board of Pharmacy website. Lastly, the deadline for mandated CURES 2.0 registration for all pharmacists has been postponed until July 1, 2016. Requires a dispenser to provide translated directions for use. Authorizes the dispenser to use translations made available by the State Board of Pharmacy pursuant to existing regulations. SBLB Actively Supports the USC-CSHP Chapter By Brian Phan, USC student liaison The SBLBSHP chapter continued its active support and participation in many professional activities of the CSHP chapter of USC throughout the Fall semester. For instance, the annual USC Legislative Day, held on November 13th at the Health Sciences Campus, would not have been possible if not for the generous donation of the SBLBSHP chapter. This event brought together state legislators and pharmacy professionals to discuss many important issues facing our profession. The panel of speakers included Senator Jeff Stone, PharmD; Dr. Kethen So, CSHP President; Assemblyman Anthony Rendon, and many more. At this event, student pharmacists were encouraged to start getting involved with legislation process early on as students. Topics of discussion included the implementation of SB 493 and the current stage of the national provider status in the context of the two federal bills - S.314 and H.R. 592. The USC chapter was honored to have Dr. Steve Thompson join us at the event as he was able to provide great insight into the future of our profession to our students. Additionally, our student members also had a great opportunity to meet and network with Dr. Cindy Odegard, Dr. Lisa Lum, Dr. Robert Tindal, and Dr. Hai Tran at our annual Meet the Directors event on November 5th. At this highly anticipated event, they were able to share their career pathways to the attending students as directors of inpatient pharmacy and pharmacy finance analytics, respectively, as well as general tips on how to succeed in pharmacy school and beyond. The USC CSHP chapter truly appreciates the ongoing support and mentorship of the SBLBSHP chapter. We look forward to more opportunities in the future for our students to work closely with and learn from its pharmacist members.
