SBLB-SHP was named Chapter of Distinction for 2014 by CSHP. Kenn Horowitz was selected to receive the Distinguished Service Award for 2015. This award recognizes an individual who has made exceptional and sustained contributions to the Society at the regional and state levels. Kenn is a very well deserved recipient. Please plan to join us at Seminar when Kenn receives his award and we celebrate in his honor! SBLB-SHP sponsored Brian Phan (USC Class of 2017 & ASHP/CSHP president) Steve Thompson and Kenn Horowitz to attend California Pharmacy Legislative Day on April 28th. It was a great turn out! During late April and early May, we held 3 accredited CE sessions of Western States Presentations by PGY1 and PGY2 Residents. We had Residents representing Long Beach Memorial/Miller Children’s, Caremore/USC, Kaiser Permanente, Providence Little Company of Mary, and Veterans Affairs Long Beach. Angela Jeong and Billie Gomes coordinated these sessions. Our Mentorship Program with USC Students has completed its first six months. It has been a great success with positive feedback from both mentors and mentees. We have had several mentees come to our Board meetings. Tim Chou and Angela Lee have done an incredible job with this program. Public Relations co-chairs Kirsten La and Scott Harada are busy scheduling Health Fairs. Membership co-chairs Matthew Kamada and Charles Lam are planning a “Meet the Board” with graduating Pharmacy School students and Residents on June 10th. (continued on next page)

Member Highlight: Lisa Gunther Lum Receives USC Health Fair Preceptor of the Year Award By Angela Lee, Communications Co-Chair On April 20th, Lisa Gunther Lum—SBLB’s CSHP liaison—was recognized as the health fair preceptor of the year by USC American Pharmacy Student Alliance. Lisa has spent many weekend days precepting pharmacy students at health fairs, providing health screenings and education to community. Lisa is also very involved in the USC chapter of Lambda Kappa Sigma, professional fraternity, and mentoring students through the SBLBSHP mentorship program. This award was very well-deserved for her dedication to volunteerism and passion for mentoring. Congratulations, Lisa!

The BoP has posted several proposed regulations for public comment. One of these includes a new set of sterile compounding regulations. The previous iteration of proposed regulation was withdrawn. Deadline for public comment on the new set of sterile compounding regulation is June 22, 2015. Also, the Board has released the following pending regulations: 

Recap: Joint CSHP/CPhA Legislative Day By Daniel Kudryashov, Legal Affairs Chair, and Brian Phan, USC 4th year Student The annual joint CSHP/CPhA Legislative Day took place on April 28th this year in Sacramento focusing on the three main legislation pieces, including SB 672, AB 627, and AB 486. SB 672 (Hernandez) seeks to provide peer review legal protection to pharmacists who work in the many health systems across the state. Currently, this bill has passed the Senate Floor and is now headed to the Assembly. AB 627 (Gomez) aims to create fair standards for Maximum Allowable Cost (MAC)-based pharmacy reimbursement by mandating weekly updates from the PBMs and disclosure of sources used in establishing these MAC lists by PBMs. It has passed the Assembly Business and Professions Committee and is waiting for a Floor Vote in the Assembly. Lastly, AB 486 clarifies the language of AB 377 regarding the issue of centralized hospital packaging pharmacies. Additionally, students and pharmacists in attendance also had a large presence in our white coats in strong support for SB 277 in the Capitol building. In essence, this bill mandates all children to be vaccinated to enroll in public school in the state. We were able to discuss the benefits of vaccination with groups in opposition of the bill. Further, we were able educate people about the pharmacist’s role in providing these preventative measures. Our advocacy efforts were successful, as the bill passed Senate on May 14 with a vote of 25-11-3 and is headed to the Assembly. In conclusion, legislative day, although smaller in size this year, was a large success. The lawmakers were very happy to meet with their constituents in an intimate environment to discuss the many aspects of pharmacy legislation, and both student pharmacists and constituents were able to establish a productive dialogue surrounding current issues.
