October 2015

Message from the President I hope many of you are planning to attend CSHP Seminar 2015, October 9-11 at the Sheraton Hotel and Marina in San Diego. It’s short drive from South Bay or Long Beach! Please plan to attend the Awards Reception to honor Kenn Horowitz who was selected to receive the Distinguished Service Award for 2015. This award recognizes an individual who has made exceptional and sustained contributions to the Society at the regional and state levels. SBLBSHP is helping to sponsor the Awards Reception. We continue to have many activities for our members to attend. Our Educational Affairs co-chairs, Angela Jeong and Billie Gomes, arranged Educational Dinners in June and July. June’s dinner was at 555 American Steakhouse and the July dinner was held at L’Opera Italian Restaurant both in Long Beach. The next event, "Biosimilars: Market & Pipeline", was in September at The Depot Restaurant in Torrance and attendees received one hour of continuing education credit. For social activities we had an excellent turn out for our Summer Event at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Our Social co-chairs, Marilyn Jen and Cindy La, are planning our Fourth Annual Wine Trip – “Annual Wine ‘n Dine Day Trip to Lompoc” in October. It’s a great way to enjoy some great wine, food and company! Clincal Affairs committee members Brittney Biegel, Yalda Dorosti, Lauren Epperson, Angela Lee, and Bill Reeve are planning a half-day Continuing Education Program in November at the Miyako Hybrid Hotel in Torrance. There will be three speakers and three hours of continuing education credits.

Annual Wine 'n Dine Trip October 24

SBLBSHP supported the 2015 Special Olympics by cheering on athletes at a basketball game. Public Relations co-chairs Kirsten Law and Scott Harada and President-Elect Tim Chou made all of the arrangements including printing up a special t-shirt that honored the athletes and recognized our chapters. Others that could not be attendance were able to support these athletes with online monetary contributions. (Continued on page 2) 1

Message from the President (continued from page 1) Our Mentorship Program with USC Students continues to thrive. It has been a great success with positive feedback from both mentors and mentees. We continue to have mentees attend our monthly Board meetings. Tim Chou and Angela Lee have done an incredible job with this program. I need to recognize our Communications cochairs Angela Lee and Amanda Wong. They do an excellent job on our newsletters! There is a lot of work that goes into publishing and keeping our members informed. Special thanks to our 2015 Board of Directors! We have great and hard individuals that makes sure our members have quality events and programs to attend. We also have a lot of fun as well. If you have any interest in getting involved, please come to a board meeting! Cindy Odegard, PharmD SBLBSHP President

We had more than 60 people including members, family and friends join us for lunch and a day at the Aquarium. The day started with an awesome lunch buffet at Gladstone’s. There was plenty of time for all to network and enjoy the food. We were seated on the outside patio with a wonderful view of the marina. Following lunch we enjoyed an afternoon at the Aquarium. The exhibits both inside and out were very entertaining. This is the second time we have put on a summer event in Long Beach. Many requested to go back next year. There are 5 many activities, shops and restaurants in this area. Thanks for all you that came out for the event! - Cindy Odegard, SBLBSHP President

Update: SBLBSHP Mentorship Program By Angela Lee, Mentorship Program Co-Coordinator SBLB’s very first mentorship program has been smooth sailing since December 2014, thanks to dedicated members who have volunteered their time to reach out to pharmacy students. In addition to monthly discussions via email, several mentor-mentee pairs have taken initiative to meet in person and even attend SBLB events together. It has been great to see so many pharmacy students come to our monthly board meetings, showing interest in getting involved beyond school activities. The mentorship program has 3 months and 3 discussion topics remaining for the rest of the year. However, the relationship that you have built with your mentee will last lifetime as the student graduates from pharmacy school and becomes a colleague in our profession. Mentees who successfully complete the program will be invited to our Installation/Night with Industry, which will be another great opportunity to bond with our future colleagues and encourage them to stay involved! Here are some suggestions on ways to be a superstar mentor:  Offer to review mentee’s CV  If you are attending CSHP Seminar, then offer to meet up with your mentee  Invite your mentee out to SBLB events such as the half-day CE program  If your employer allows, then invite your mentee to shadow you at work If any mentor has difficulty getting responses from mentee, then please do not hesitate to contact the program coordinators: Angela Lee (angela.nh.lee@gmail.com) and Tim Chou (Tim.X.Chou@kp.org). SBLB will be soon recruiting volunteers for the 2016 mentorship program. It is a rewarding experience, paying forward the guidance that you may once have received as a student and seeing the positive impact that you can make early in your mentee’s career. Please keep your eyes out for an email with more details. Mentors, thank you again for your time and dedication!

By Daniel Kudryashov, Legal Affairs Chair SB 627 (Hernandez) reaches Governor’s Desk This bill amends section 1157 of the Evidence Code to include hospital pharmacists in the list of professionals whose peer review records and procedures are protected from discovery. The law will encourage additional pharmacist involvement in the medical peer review process. SBLBSHP encourages its members to send in letters of support to the Governor via the CSHP online Grassroots Action Center. Proposed 340B Omnibus Guidance The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) published for public comment a large set of regulations to serve as guidance with the administration of 340B Drug Pricing Program. The proposed guidance provides clarification on the areas of covered entity eligibility, patient definition, group purchasing organization (GPO) prohibition, contract pharmacy, duplicate discounts and covered entity audits. It also includes enhanced program integrity requirements for pharmaceutical manufactures participating in the program. The notice was released on 8/26/15 and public comment period will close on October 26, 2015. California Board of Pharmacy Updates  Advanced Practice Pharmacist registration: Proposed Language posted  The board recognizes the pharmacy patient care certification programs that are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies for purposes of satisfying the requirements enacted by SB 493.  Public comment period: July 31 – Sep 14, 2015 

Proposed Protocol for Pharmacists Initiating and Administering Vaccinations  Public comment period: July 24 – Sep 7, 2015

Sterile Compounding Regulations (ongoing implementation of SB 294 [2013])  Last Public comment period closed June 22, 2015.  Further Action TBA

CURES 2.0 Roll-out:  In order to ensure a smooth transition from the current system, CURES 2.0 will be rolled out to users in phases over the next several months, beginning with early adoption by a select group of users who currently use CURES and meet the CURES 2.0 security standards, including minimum browser specifications. DOJ is currently identifying prescribers and dispensers who meet these criteria and will contact and coordinate their enrollment into CURES 2.0. For all other current users, access to CURES 1.0 will not change and no action is needed at this time. For users and entities not currently enrolled in CURES, further notification will be provided in August as to the enrollment/registration process.  Practitioners and health systems should begin to prepare for universal adoption of the system by January 2016, at which point all users will be required to meet CURES 2.0’s security standards.

Public Relations Recap By Scott Harada, Co-Public Relations Chair Today was exciting, not to say that everyday isn't exciting at work, but today upon my arrival I was greeted with an enormous 2.2 pound manila envelope. Inside were dozens of hand written and hand drawn letters from third graders reading, "one day I want to be a pharmici," and "I hope you will come back next year." My co-workers and I were shocked just how thankful the students at Aloha Elementary School were for participating in their career day event this past June. Representing SBLBSHP were USC student pharmacists, Danielle Cortez and Julie Shafer, who put on an amazing slide show featuring miniature interactive demos teaching students the spectrum a pharmacist can work, the benefits and dangers of medications, and an endless flurry of adorable questions. In short, SBLBSHP is proud to be a key player in encouraging young minds to engage in the field of medicine. The festivities certainly do not end here. In the coming months, members will have the opportunity to volunteer in two events to continue sharing their passion for pharmacy:

Bread of Life Health Fair

4th Annual iWalk4 Kids

Sat., October 10th from 9am-12pm @2780 Lomita Blvd, Torrance, CA 90505

Sun., October 18, 2015 from 7am-1pm @Queen Mary Events Park, 1126 Queens Hwy, Long Beach, CA 90802

Come out to support our SBLB booth this year and educate the public on proper medication disposal and help patients fill out an emergency medication card. USC students will be providing diabetes screening services and are in need of preceptors. Lastly, this venue will be featuring the Medical Missions Adventures clinic which will provide members an added opportunity to counsel patients on their new medications prescribed by the MMA team.

iWalk4 Kids has reached out to SBLBSHP to request educational services on the topics of general asthma awareness and also the health hazards of hidden sugars in foods. Students from local schools of pharmacy will be presenting and are in need of several preceptors. The event will feature food and festivities which makes this an event you don't want to miss out on. A Sign-Up email for both events was sent out. We can't wait to see you showing off your pharmacist spirit!

SBLBSHP Intern Mixer By Matt Kamada, Co-Membership Chair On June 10th, the Membership Co-Chairs from SBLBSHP invited several pharmacy students and residents to take a break from their studying to enjoy a social hour hosted at the Tin Roof Bistro in Manhattan Beach. Although most students were involved with their local student chapters of professional organizations, for many this was their first glimpse at professional organizations after graduation. Forty students came out to share hors d’oeuvres, play games, and get to know the SBLBSHP board. By the end of the night we were able to welcome two new SBLBSHP members, Paris Shoghi and Joseph Becerra!
