Message from the President Hello South Bay/Long Beach Society of Health System Pharmacists (SBLBSHP) members! It has been really rewarding for me to be involved and serve on board with SBLBSHP this past couple years and it is truly an honor to serve as the President of the chapter for 2016! Looking back at our 2015 year, we have once again been recognized as a 2015 Regional Chapter of Distinction under the leadership of our immediate past President Cindy Odegard and the dedication of our board members. Moving forward with 2016, I’m definitely excited to continue our success and lead our chapter to another great year!

We started off 2016 with our 36th annual Night with Industry and Installation Banquet on Friday, January 29th at the Hyatt at the Pike Hotel in downtown Long Beach planned by our awesome Social Affairs Co-Chairs Marilyn Jen and Cindy La. It was definitely a fun night where we celebrated the completion of our chapter’s first ever mentorship program and installed our 2016 SBLBSHP Elected Officers as well as our board committee members. Our CSHP President Kethen So was also in attendance to present the Kelly Hales Memorial Pharmacist of the Year Award to Steven Thompson!

With the success and positive feedback with our mentorship program, we have kick started a new class of mentees for our 2016 year lead by Angela Lee. This year, we are looking to continue our successes as well as integrate some new activities and opportunities with the mentorship program!

SBLBSHP is looking for volunteers to help out our newest project working with the Long Beach Rescue Mission. Classes on topics surrounding heart health will be offered every other month on the first Friday evening starting this April 1st! This is not an April Fools joke, if you are interested in donating just a few hours of your time to either precept students or give a guest lecture every so often to some of the South Bay's homeless, please email Scott Harada, Public Relations Chair, at haradarx@gmail.com. Full details are pending and hours, topics, and everything in between are flexible! We are open to new ideas and classes are only an hour long. Our community needs you and if you've been looking for a way to step it up, let us know at any time this year! We hope that you'll take part and be part of our amazing team to help out community at a time they need it most.

Kelly Hales Memorial Pharmacist of the Year Award

The Kelly Hales Memorial Pharmacist of the Year Award is named in honor of a former President and distinguished member of our South Bay-Long Beach chapter, Kelly Hales. Dr. Hales was an Outpatient Pharmacy Manager at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center when he tragically lost his life due to workplace violence.

The person recognized as our SBLBSHP Kelly Hales Memorial Pharmacist of the Year is a professional role model and one who has made significant, influential, tangible, and sustained contributions to the profession and practice of pharmacy in locally and in California.

This year, SBLBSHP recognized Steve Thompson, PharmD, as our Kelly Hales Memorial Pharmacist of the Year. Steve has served our SBLB chapter tirelessly since the 1970’s, having served as President, Webmaster, Legal Affairs, Delegate, Membership Chair, and Director. He has also served on numerous CSHP state-level committees over the years: Seminar Management Team Liaison to CSHP, Committee on Goals, Committee on Nominations, and Pubic Relations.

Dr. Thompson served on the CSHP Board of Directors from 2010 to 2013. During his term we saw several key pieces of legislation pass, such as SB 493. Steve attended Legislative Day and had a legislator visit Torrance Memorial – all of which had a part in helping SB493 be passed into law.

Steve has mentored many students and pharmacists in his 35+ year pharmacy career. He has been the Director of Pharmacy at Torrance Memorial for many years, and brought the pharmacy department much visibility and improvements over the years. He has taught students at several pharmacy schools: UOP, UCSD, UCSF and USC – to name a few. Steve has also precepted students from several pharmacy technician schools such as American Career College, Boston Reed, and Everst College.

36th Annual Board Installation and Night with Industry

By Cindy La, Social Chair Our annual banquet was a huge success that saw attendance from over 75 members and 11 vendors. It was our chapter's first time at Hyatt Centric at the Pike in Long Beach and the location was a hit! We spruced up the venue with decorations to reflect our theme of “Sunset at the Beach.�

We kicked off the evening with Night with Industry where we had displays from many of our dedicated vendors. We would like to thank Takeda Oncology, QuVa Pharma, Theravance Biopharma, Pharmacyclics, Novartis Oncology, Incyte Corp, Astellas Pharma, Progressive Medical, Gilead, Janssen, and Sunovion Pharmaceuticals for supporting our event and the profession of pharmacy. It was a lot of fun to see our members so engaged and keeping up-to-date with changes in the market. Many of our members made their way outside to the beautiful open courtyard where they were able to enjoy cocktail hour with light refreshments underneath romantic strings of beaded lights.

As the Night with Industry came to a close, we quickly shuffled our guests to the main banquet hall where Marilyn Jen and Cindy La (Social Affairs Co-Chairs) got the Installation Banquet started. Our Master of Ceremonies, Matt Kamada (2016 President-Elect) kept the event moving as our guests enjoyed their buffet-style Italian dinner and, hopefully, made room for delicious tiramusu cake! We were honored to welcome our special guests MaryAnne Bobrow (current CSHP Interim Executive Vice President/CEO), Kethen So (current CSHP President), and Ken Horowitz (past CSHP Treasurer and President).

In addition to acknowledging our past SBLBSHP Presidents, Lisa Lum proceeded to install the 2016 Board, including new President Tim Chou. Our Immediate Past-President, Cindy Odegard, introduced Lisa Lum and Kethen So to the stage to present Steve Thompson with the Kelly Hales Pharmacist of the Year Award. Also at this event, Angela Lee and Tim recognized our 2015 mentees and thanked our 2015 mentors for their outstanding contribution. After reflecting upon her presidential duties this past year, Cindy O. graciously passed the baton to Tim Chou who was excited and ready to take on his new position as President.

And who could forget the tide that came rolling in with great raffle prizes? Marilyn and Cindy L. added a little light-hearted humor during the four raffle rounds and kept the audience in suspense throughout the night. We had a record 25 raffle prizes to show our appreciation to our members.

Coincidentally, the grand prize winner was none other than Steve Thompson, our Pharmacist of the Year. Congratulations again, Steve, on a much-deserved double win!

We would also like to thank our student volunteers (Brian Phan, Byron Lim, Sophie Cheng, Vanessa Ma, Helena Lau, Devin Panlasigui, Lyndsie Okumura, Keira Truong, and Alen Hakimi) for helping out.

Again, a big thank you to all of our members who were able to attend our event. It was a great opportunity to unwind and recognize all of your contributions this past year. We are looking forward to next year's Banquet!

California State Senator Ben Allen Learns About Pharmacy’s Inner Workings

By Steve Thompson, SBLBSHP Director California Senator Ben Allen, 26th District, toured Torrance Memorial Medical Center’s pharmacy recently to get an update on technology and safety protocols, as well as the impacts of Senate Bill 493, signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown. The bill expands the role of pharmacists, recognizing them as health care providers in California. The move is meant to address a growing shortage of primary care doctors. It is currently being implemented by the California State Board of Pharmacy and California Medical Board. During the visit Allen observed the inpatient pharmacy automation systems designed to prevent medication errors, and the state-of-the-art sterile compounding room used to prepare hundreds of IV solutions for patients. As a result of the visit, Torrance Memorial will continue to serve as an information resource to Allen for future legislative measures.

Legislative Update

By Daniel Kudryashov, Legal Affairs Chair Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) update – Guidance on “First Responders” The Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) was signed into law on November 27, 2013. The DSCSA outlines critical steps to build an electronic, interoperable system to identify and trace products as they are distributed in the United States. Section 202 of the DSCSA added sections 581 and 582 to the FD&C Act, which set forth various definitions and requirements for trading partners.

To help build the product tracing system envisioned by the DSCSA, trading partners generally are required to provide subsequent purchasers of product with specific product tracing information.

Trading partners are also generally required to have systems in place to enable the verification of suspect and illegitimate product. Furthermore, trading partners of manufacturers, wholesale distributors, dispensers, and repackagers must be “authorized.”

On February 29, 2016 FDA issues a guidance document which described FDA’s compliance policy regarding certain requirements for transactions with first responders. Here are the major points: FDA does not intend to take action against a dispenser who transfers ownership of a product directly to a first responder without providing product tracing information to the first responder FDA also does not intend to take action against trading partners who conduct business with a first responder that is not “authorized” as a dispenser FDA does not intend to take action against a first responder who: 1) accepts ownership of product without first receiving the product tracing information and does not capture and maintain product tracing information, OR 2) does not comply with the dispenser requirements for verification of suspect or illegitimate product This guidance applies to transactions between a trading partner and a first responder. “First responder” is defined is any person: (1) who is authorized by law to administer a product, (2) is responsible for the emergency treatment of ill or injured persons, and (3) provides such emergency treatment outside of a health care facility. First responders may include employees of Federal, State, and local law enforcement, and governmental and nongovernmental fire/rescue and ambulance services.

Over The Counter Naloxone The Board of Pharmacy has finalized the emergency regulations allowing pharmacists to furnish, without a prescription, an antidote to reverse opioid overdose, effective January 27, 2016. This is a result of California Assembly Bill 1535 passed last year.

CURES 2.0 As a reminder, the deadline for mandated CURES 2.0 registration for all pharmacists is July 1, 2016.

2016 SBLBSHP Mentorship Program Kick-Off!

By Angela Lee, Mentorship Program Chair Ready... Set... ADVISE! GUIDE! INSPIRE! Followed by much positive feedback from last year, the 2016 SBLBSHP Mentorship Program has kicked off to a great start with 18 mentor-mentee pairs. Mentees are current CSHP student members at USC, and they are paired with our members who have graciously volunteered their time and energy.

The program consists of monthly emails encouraging active communication between mentors and mentees through various discussion topics such as "How to succeed in pharmacy school", "Should I do residency?", and "How to get a job." Mentors and mentees are also encouraged to meet up in person and attend SBLBSHP events together. The program is extremely valuable for students who seldom have networking opportunities outside of school and internship. Many mentees came out to our board meetings and events last year, and we are looking forward active participation from this year's class as well!
