Message From the President Spring is upon us! As the weather starts to heat up, so do the events that our chapter will be hosting. I really hope you will take the time from your busy schedule to join us in our educational dinners, CE events, social events, or even our monthly board meetings. A few times per year the CSHP Affiliate Chapter Presidents assemble in Sacramento for a strategic planning meeting. I had the opportunity to go visit the CSHP headquarters in February and will be going again in May. It truly was a pleasure to meet with the other chapter presidents and to share our successes and challenges. In regards to our South Bay / Long Beach chapter, one aspect that other chapter presidents asked me about was our ability to attract new practitioners. As you may have noticed, we undoubtedly have one of the youngest chapters but at the same time we have a faithful following of motivated and spirited seasoned pharmacists. I think the diversity of age and experience makes our chapter so attractive to residents, new practitioners, and seasoned pharmacists alike. (continued on the next page)

Our chapter has kept very close relationships with the local schools of pharmacy and also held a robust mentorship program so I feel that we have set ourselves up for a bright future.

Educational Dinners By Angela Jeong, Educational Affairs & Industry Relations Chair
SBLBSHP members have attended several educational dinners over the past few months. In February, we met at one of our favorite venues, Tin Roof Bistro in Manhattan Beach, to listen to a lecture by Jaymie Estrella, Ph.D. on the American Society of Hematology 2016 Update on Darzalex and Imbruvica. On March 28, 2017 we learned about acquired hemophilia from Doris Quon, M.D. at the The Sky Room in Long Beach. The next educational dinner will be “Updates and New Indications for Imbruvica” by Joie Bernard, Ph.D. at The Chart House in Redondo Beach. Be sure to RSVP if you have not already done so! The annual South Bay Long Beach Residency Showcases were held on May 3 at CareMore in Cerritos and May 11 at Kaiser Permanente South Bay. Pharmacy residents delivered engaging Western States presentations to a diverse audience of pharmacists and students.

Long Beach Rescue Mission Health Fair By Jenny Wan, and Scott Harada, Public Relations Chairs On April 2nd, 2017, SBLBSHP collaborated with student pharmacists from USC School of Pharmacy to organize a community health fair at Long Beach Rescue Mission. The health fair was a success as we provided body fat, cholesterol, diabetes, and hypertension screenings along with several educational services to about 70 participants. Special thanks go to Michelle Tandoc, Matt Kamada, and JR Flores for volunteering as preceptors and raising health awareness in our underserved population!

Hypertension Awareness By Scott Harada, Public Relations Co-Chair On May 5th, 2017, SBLBSHP hosted a successful health class at the Long Beach Rescue Mission about hypertension. USC student pharmacists Jody Gotoc and Angela Hoang presented to a record audience of about 32 Long Beach Rescue Mission members! Our students answered question after question and kept our audience both entertained and educated. This health class is one of six sessions planned this year covering even more topics than our previous year. Special thanks to our students for coming out during finals season!

SBLB Mentor-Mentee Social: Eat, Drink, and Mingle By Angela Lee, Mentorship Program Coordinator The first mentor-mentee social in the brief history of our mentorship program took place on Friday, April 7th, and it was a huge success! The venue, Five O’ Clock Wine Bar in Long Beach, provided an intimate setting with both an indoor area and outdoor seating around fire pits. There were more than 30 students, mentors, and SBLBSHP board members in attendance who enjoyed wine, beer, and platters of panini, pizza, and sliders while winding down for the week. The main purpose of the social was to provide an opportunity for mentors and mentees to get to know one another in person, in addition to communicating over monthly e-mails. Mentees also got to meet pharmacists other than their mentors. A brief welcome speech was given, encouraging mentees to stay involved in local associations after graduation and to pay it forward by mentoring future students. The mentorship program has been effective in engaging students in our chapter’s activities and giving them opportunities to be active in the profession beyond school. In fact, several of our current board members are former mentees. The social was scheduled from 7 to 9pm, but many people stayed well past this time – eating, drinking, and mingling. One student commented, “I think we should have the social every month!” Thank you to the rest of the mentorship program committee members – Helena Lau and Jennifer Fong – for helping to coordinate the event. Also, a special shoutout goes to Cindy Odegard for helping with wine selection and logistics of the event. As always, the mentorship program could only be successful with support from all the mentors (listed on the next page), so thank you for your time and dedication. In addition, our student representatives from USC – Lyndsie Okumura, Sandy On, and Sophie Cheng, deserve recognition for facilitating participation from their peers in the mentorship program. There are a total of 25 mentor-mentee pairs in the 2017 program. We look forward to seeing more mentors and mentees together at future SBLB events! 4

Student Liaison Update

By Sophie Cheng, Student Liaison The USC School of Pharmacy CSHP chapter held its 4th Annual Local Association Meet and Greet on March 22 at Luminarias Restaurant. Seven local CSHP and CPhA leaders, including SBLBSHP’s very own Dr. Steven Thompson, joined 45 USC students at this annual networking event to share how they got involved with their local associations and how those experiences helped shape their pharmacy careers. Dr. Thompson started off the event as the keynote speaker from the CSHP side, capturing the room with his words of inspiration while drawing lots of laughs. The keynote sessions were followed by three rounds of “speed dating” over a threecourse dinner, where each of the pharmacists discussed their unique professional experiences with eight students each round. Finally, the night concluded with a raffle, the grand prize being an Amazon Echo Dot. The USC Chapter would like to thank Dr. Thompson again for the time and energy he put in to prepare a speech and

encourage the USC students at this event. The Meet and Greet truly would not have been a success without the generous support of Dr. Thompson and the SBLBSHP chapter. We look forward to seeing what more we will accomplish through our upcoming collaborations with SBLBSHP this summer!

Leadership Breakfast

By Lauren Epperson, Clinical Affairs Chair On April 21, 2017, the SBLBSHP Clinical Affairs Committee hosted a Leadership Breakfast on the topic of sterile compounding regulations at The Boathouse on the Bay in Long Beach. The event began with a meet and greet with various pharmaceutical vendors as well as a tasty buffet breakfast with exceptional eggs benedict! Immediately following this, guests moved into the main dining area where they listened to California Board of Pharmacy Inspector, Suzy Patell, RPh, give a 1 hour CE lecture on Sterile Compounding Regulations, followed by an open Q&A session. Everyone enjoyed a great breakfast, beautiful view and the new knowledge they gained!
