dedicated and talented board members. I want to thank the 2019 board members under the leadership of Rosalin Preechakul for a fabulous 2019. My goals for 2020 is to continue with momentum created. This chapter has been part of my family for many years. My daughters grew up participating in chapter activities since they were toddlers. I hope that all SBLB members value each other as their professional family.

My goals for this year is for our chapter to continue to network and have fun at our social programs, mentor our chapter’s students and residents, bring relevant educational events, and continue to work with the collaboration of our technicians toward expanding our scope of practice for pharmacists to practice at the top of our licensure. I want to thank all people who stepped up to be on the board to work together for a great year!
Sincerely, Angela Jeong, PharmD, APh

Festive Board Dinner By Rosalin Preechakul, PharmD, APh, BCPS Immediate Past President Every holiday season, the board gets together to celebrate our friendship and accomplishments by having a “festive” board meeting offsite instead of the traditional monthly board meeting. This year, SBLBSHP board members went for a change in scenery to Tantalum waterfront lounge in Long Beach. We had the pleasure of enjoying an exotic menu of California cuisine with an Asian soul along the Alamitos Bay. As the 2019 President, I was very fortunate to have such dedicated board members that led our chapter to another successful year. I’m thankful to continue to work with our board members and excited to have some new and energetic members joining our board for 2020. Looking forward to another great year!

By Angela Lee, PharmD, BCPS, Social Affairs Chair Our chapter's 40th Night with Industry (NWI)/Installation Banquet took place on Friday, January 24th, at Michael's Tuscany Room in San Pedro. As per our theme, "Fly with SBLBSHP," nearly 100 attendees including our members, guests, students, and industry representatives were transported to a European courtyard with rustic charm and romantic lights. The evening began with a networking session with our sponsors: Alexion, Amgen, Bayer, Biogen, Fagron Sterile Services, Genentech, Gilead, Incyte, Nephron Pharmaceuticals, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, Rare Disease Therapeutics Inc, and Tesaro. We would like to thank these companies for their generous contributions! A special shout out also goes to our industry relations committee for recruiting and coordinating sponsorship. The networking session was energized by drinks, appetizers, and the crossword puzzle that attendees could complete for an extra chance to win raffle prizes. The dinner and installation program soon followed. We feasted on prime rib, chicken involtini, pasta, various sides, and family-style mini desserts. The Kelly Hales Memorial Pharmacist of the Year Award was presented to our member, Shelly Fisher, whose nomination highlighted her dedication to recruiting and educating pharmacists to participate in the End of Life program. Two graduating students, Kara Onouye (USC) and Michael Palaroan (Western) were presented with the student of the year award and scholarship for their spirit of volunteerism with our chapter.

Mentees who successfully completed this year's mentorship program were recognized as well. The banquet marked the official end of the term for the 2019 board and the
beginning for this year's board. The 2020 board was installed by the CSHP president and past SBLBSHP president, Lisa Lum. Keeping up with our tradition, last year's president, Rosalin Preechakul, passed down the crystal gavel to this year's fearless leader, Angela Jeong, who will be serving her second president term with SBLBSHP. Angela gave a heartfelt speech, sharing stories from her first presidency and her excitement for the year ahead. Many went home as winners (of raffle prizes), including the grand prize of a one-year complementary CSHP membership. Much thanks to the 2019 board for the wonderful year of great accomplishments and memories. Thank you, our members, for choosing SBLBSHP as your chapter and coming out to celebrate with us. The 2020 board looks forward to seeing everyone at our future events as we continue our work to support the pharmacy profession and South Bay/Long Beach community, all while having fun!

Educational Dinner: Migraine Myth Busters By Leslie Wu, PharmD, Industrial Relations Co-Chair On Tuesday, January 7, 2020, our chapter partnered with Amgen (represented by Paul Reinbach) to host a promotional dinner on “Migraine Myth Busters: Exploring the Role of Aimovig” at L’Opera Italian Restaurant in Long Beach. Dr. C. Philip O’Carroll from Hoag Memorial Hospital gave an informative lecture regarding the role of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) inhibitors, a novel class of therapeutic agents, in the management of chronic or episodic migraines. Dr. O’Carroll shared many clinical pearls from his specialty practice in neurology and migraine treatment. As we enter the new year, we will be having many more promotional dinners coming soon and would love to have you join us in supporting our industry partners who have been instrumental to the success of our chapter endeavors.
Promoting the Pharmacist - Pharmacy Student Relationship By Lauren Alfano, PharmD, BCPS, Mentorship Co-Chair SBLB continues to promote its pharmacist members to mentor local pharmacy students. January 2020 marks the end of the 2019 program and beginning of the 2020 program. This program relies on our pharmacy student liaisons to reach out to their student body to identify students who are interested in communicating with a pharmacist via monthly topic discussions, and those students are then paired with an SBLB pharmacist. After completing the one-year long mentorship program, mentors are then invited to attend the SBLB Installation Banquet where they are presented with a certificate of completion. The hope is that the mentor-mentee relationship continues beyond the scope of the program. Congratulations to the mentees completing the 2019 program! We look forward to another successful year in 2020!

Self-Care at Long Beach Rescue Mission By Judy Aoyagi, PharmD, Public Relations Co-Chair On January 17th, SBLBSHP conducted its first self-care presentation (out of six) at the Long Beach Rescue Mission (LBRM) for the year of 2020. LBRM is a faith-based facility serving as a home for men and women providing food, clothing, shelter and spiritual guidance to the homeless and less fortunate people of the community helping them to overcome substance abuse, addictions and life’s deeper challenges. Second-year students from the USC School of Pharmacy Margaret Buchinskaya and Tiffanie Lin presented on the topic of Mental Health Awareness. The presentation covered some of the most common mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse/ addiction. They had approximately 30 members from LBRM attend the event who were all very engaged throughout the presentation. Several questions were asked and students did an excellent job answering them and connecting with them with empathy. The staff and participants were really appreciative of the educational information, which was very important and relevant for the LBRM community.

Pharmaceutical Industry Night CSHP/ASHP-SSHP hosted their 2nd annual Pharmaceutical Industry Speakers’ Event. The event welcomed 9 speakers from 8 highly respected pharmaceutical companies including Allergan, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Genentech, Gilead, Neurocrine Biosciences, Tesaro, and ViiV Healthcare. The panelists were asked questions about their training, career paths, challenges, and successes within the field of industry. It was a very successful night with 95 students listening to the panel’s wise advice and enjoying a delicious Mediterranean dinner. Afterwards, the students rotated between tables and learned more about the speakers, their day-to-day responsibilities, and the opportunities available in the pharmaceutical industry. At the end of the night, the Chapman students had the chance to get to know the speakers they hadn’t talked to yet during the round tables. They enjoyed the “social hour” towards the end and were able to ask specific speakers about post-graduate opportunities. The students found the event very helpful since it showcased a career path in pharmacy that many didn’t know about. Many were inspired and are hoping to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, the speakers were honored to be invited and are looking forward to attending next year! Thank you to everyone who attended and made this event a great success!
