Hello SBLBSHP Members and welcome to the first newsletter of 2021. Can you believe it, it has been almost a full year since the COVID-19 pandemic began limiting our ability to meet in person. I really miss seeing all of you in our monthly meetings and being able to connect at events and gatherings the way we used to. I am optimistic that with the roll out of vaccination programs, we may be able to start meeting together again sometime around mid-year, perhaps August. I would like to outline some of the accomplishments of 2020. We learned so much in 2020 under Angela Jeong’s and Rosalin Preechakul‘s guidance about new ways to connect with each other. Once again we received the 2020 Chapter of Distinction and Affiliate Chapter Public Relations Recognition Award. Our Industry Relations Committee coordinated multiple sponsorships for our monthly board meetings as well as for our virtual Night with Industry/ Installation event. 1

All of your creative ideas have made it possible for us to stay connected, continue to obtain sponsorship to help fund our chapter, and to keep us all connected. Thank you, our 2020 board for the great job you all did. In 2021 we will continue to meet virtually until the state and county regulations allow for us to begin meeting on site and will be able to combine both face-to-face and virtual options. I am asking for SBLBSHP members to provide creative ideas to increase our influence and membership during the year. Please email me with your ideas (jmcgady@gmail.com) so we can discuss them at our board meetings. I would like to introduce our new CSHP liaison, Mark Nguyen, PharmD, BCPS, FCSHP. Mark is an associate professor of pharmacy practice and administration and coordinator of health systems experience at Western University of Health Sciences College of pharmacy. Let’s give Mark a warm welcome. Once again, thank you to all of our 2020 board members and thank you to our 2021 board members for their service throughout this year. Finally, thank you to Steve Thompson, PharmD for his service as our CSHP liaison for the last two years. Sincerely, John McGady, MS, PharmD, BCPS

2021 Night with Industry/ Installation Banquet By Angela Lee, PharmD, BCPS, APh, Communications Chair
Our chapter's very first virtual Night with Industry & Installation took place on Friday, January 29th, hosted by 2020 social affairs co-chairs, Angela Lee and Steffi Fukunaga, and joined by over 40 members, industry representatives, and students. Like many other events in the past year shifted from in-person to Zoom, some adjustments had to be made. However, SBLBSHP's display of gratitude for our members as well as industry sponsors, recognition of outgoing and incoming board members, and traditions like passing of the crystal gavel to the next president continued on. The event was sponsored by Abbvie, Biogen, and AstraZeneca; each company gave a brief presentation, followed by an interactive quiz session for attendees to answer questions and win gift cards. Distinguished guests - CSHP CEO, Loriann DeMartini, and CSHP President-elect, Jim Scott joined, showing their support for SBLBSHP. The immediate-past CSHP president and past SBLBSHP president, Lisa Gunther, conducted the installation of the 2021 board. The 2020 SBLBSHP president, Angela Jeong, was presented with a plaque of appreciation for her leadership during these unprecedented times and gave a heartfelt speech recognizing the 2020 board members. 3

Yen Luu from USC School of Pharmacy and Dorith Anda from MBKU College of Pharmacy were recipients of the student scholarship awards for their persistent dedication and spirit of volunteering with our chapter. In lieu of the annual pharmacist of the year award, Anthony Dang and Marcie Terasawa-Lew from VA Long Beach Medical Center were nominated and recognized as pharmacy heroes for their extraordinary work during this pandemic. The mentorship program coordinator, Rosalin Preechakul, acknowledged members who volunteered in our chapter's outreach effort to cultivate future pharmacists as well as selected students who successfully completed the mentorship program. Upon receiving the crystal gavel (photo below), the 2021 SBLBSHP president, John McGady, shared his vision for the year ahead, hopeful that our chapter activities may return to normalcy and we may be able to connect in-person soon. The evening concluded with raffling of the grand prize: a 1-Year Complementary CSHP membership, won by SBLBSHP's long-time member, Stephen Snider! SBLBSHP would like to thank all those who attended our very first virtual Night with Industry/Installation to kick off another meaningful year of professional growth, networking, and advocacy. Thank you for your ongoing engagement and support.

Legislation Update By Rosalin Preechakul, PharmD, APh, BCPS, Legal Affairs Chair
COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges and many policy changes have been made opening opportunities for pharmacists to be an advocate for the profession. The government had temporarily made it easier for pharmacists to provide care to patients during the COVID-19 public health emergency, but further action is needed to ensure pharmacists are fully and sustainably engaged in these expanded roles. Immunization
Under the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act (PREP Act), pharmacists are authorized to order and administer, and pharmacy interns acting under the supervision of the qualified pharmacist are authorized to administer, COVID-19 vaccinations to persons aged 3 years or older, childhood vaccines to individuals ages 3 to 18 years old.
COVID 19 Testing
HHS Statements on Authorizing Licensed Pharmacists to Order and Administer COVID-19 Tests. HHS Assistant Secretary for Health Brett P. Giroir, M.D. issued the following statement: "In an effort to expand testing capabilities, we are authorizing licensed pharmacists to order and administer COVID-19 tests to their patients. The accessibility and distribution of retail and independent community-based pharmacies make pharmacists the first point of contact with a healthcare professional for many Americans. This will further expand testing for Americans, particularly our healthcare workers and first responders who are working around the clock to provide care, compassion and safety to others."
Telehealth
Flexibilities issued by HHS and CMS allow for the use of non-public-facing software, relaxed location requirements, and for pharmacists to provide telehealth services under “incident-to” arrangements with physician supervision provided virtually using real-time audio and visual technology.
Access to Medications
FDA granted flexibilities for pharmacists to compound medications in shortage under 503A and 503B for hospitalized patients without patient-specific prescriptions. (Continued on next page)

This is the start of the 2021-2022 legislative session and we encourage our members to reach out to your members of Congress to urge them to designate pharmacists as providers. Help make sure that every member of Congress hears about the important role that pharmacists play in patient care. Send an email to your congressional representatives describing your contributions to the healthcare team and offering to serve as a resource on healthcare issues. Below is one example of an important advocacy effort written by Dr. Michael Hogue, PharmD, FAPhA, FNAP where he urges congress to pass a law that list pharmacists as health care providers under the Social Security Act. His letter to congress was recently published on The Morning Consult which is read widely by legislators and legislative staff.

SBLBSHP's Industry Relations Committee would like to recognize and thank our industry sponsors from previous chapter events: Incyte, Novo Nordisk, Biogen, AstraZeneca, Bristol Myers Squibb, and AbbVie. Our continued partnership with our industry representatives has truly been a boost to our chapter through the pandemic.
