Garden State Academy Offers Creative Curriculum and Home Away from Home Environment by Matt Usher There is a preschool in Galloway that is in a league of its own. The Garden State Academy of the Arts had its grand opening this past September. They opened solely by word-of-mouth and have quickly set themselves apart from local schools, offering a unique service in the area. Tracey House, owner and operator of Garden State Academy Preschool of the Arts, is an adjunct professor at Stockton with a master’s degree in early childhood education. As a mother, she felt a need to bring the caliber of preschools found in areas like California and the NYC metropolitan area to southern NJ. “We are not a daycare, but a school with teachers that are ready to teach our high level learners and boost our students that need extra support,” said Tracey. The building is new, the staff is not. All the teachers at Garden State Academy are certified with degrees; a team of qualified teachers who have

worked together in the past. A Creative Curriculum is followed with a teaching strategy heavily influenced by the Montessori and Reggio Emelia educational philosophies. The school operates from September through June and offer a summer enrichment program. There is a big emphasis on a low child to teacher ratio. A ratio of 6 to 1 ensures high quality instruction provided by teachers that are really good at what they do in a “home away from home” environment. They move at each individual child’s pace and each child has their own portfolio. There are parent/teacher conferences twice a year. Children must be 2 ½ years old to enroll in the program. The rooms are small and the walls are all neutral colors to calm the children and help them get into a creative state for learning. The facility is fully stocked with an art studio, a sensory room, a health and science room, a blocks and manipulatives room and a dramatic playroom that has all the amenities: a play kitchen, doll houses with dolls and dress up clothes. There is a large room with many windows that is used for music class, literacy, reader’s theater and yoga for the children to relax on days when they are cooped up inside due to inclimate weather. Everything is play-based with lesson plans for every week. They even have a holistic health coach who writes their health and wellness program. Each week they help the children make an organic snack. Last week they made almond butter cereal bars, then sent the children home with the recipes. The hands on experience of making the treats makes them more inclined to try them and excited to show their parents what they’ve learned. I can say from a new father’s perspective that I will be personally checking out Garden State Academy for my daughter. The focus on nurturing the children’s creative learning in a fun, hands on approach is, in my opinion, precisely what our educational system needs more of.

They are a small Non-Profit Organization (NPO) with 3 people on their team: President Shannon Hartey, VP Corrie May (with Shannon since 2008) who is married with 2 kids and Secretary Christina Ciselli (on board since 2013). Altogether Shannon has been working her cause for 9 years and she is only 25 years old! Nemours Alfred I. duPont Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, DE is the first hospital that picked up the full service with Shannon’s Room for Hope. They are now focusing on getting hospitals in the area on board one at a time. Starting this summer they will be helping 5-10 kids a month! One of their newest ideas is the Go Home Gift. They collect info from the children, seeing what they are most looking forward to going home with. The children then have something they want waiting for them at home when they arrive. ildren Parenting Young Ch ms le with Behavior Prob All kids misbehave at times. It’s a constant challenge for most parents to discipline, reward and encourage their children to behave appropriately. At some point every parent questions their own parenting style and tactics, but some children present special parenting challenges that leave their parents frustrated, lost — even hopeless. Perhaps you have a friend with a “difficult” child, or a neighbor with a “bad” kid, or maybe you are struggling with a “spirited” child of your own.These children don’t intend to be disruptive but rather are born with a challenging temperament. What do you do when the “Terrible 2s” and occasional tantrum turn into a pattern of aggressive or disruptive behavior? What do you do when absolutely no strategy of discipline or rewards improves the child’s behavior? When nothing seems to work? “We were absolutely desperate to get help for our 8 year old son Max,” says Sara, a Mays Landing mother of five. Sara explained that although she knew there was a problem with her son’s behavior, she had no idea what to do or where to go for help. “One of the scariest things is how the problem progressed. It wasn’t like one day we woke up and our kid was out of control. It was years of little episodes that slowly grew into a really horrible life for our family,” said Sara. “The whole family was walking on eggshells waiting for the next explosion. Pretty much every area of our life was controlled by Max’s behavior.” After years of Max’s escalating negative behavior, countless broken toys, and daily verbal threats of violence Sara began to fear for the safety of all of her children including Max.Things were spiraling out of control with no help in sight. “Admitting we couldn’t handle the problem ourselves was just the first step, finding help was just as difficult and when we found organizations that offered help there was a terrible fear of losing parental rights.” Many parents of children with extreme behavior problems are hesitant to actually seek professional help.

Not only is there a stigma attached to admitting you’ve lost control of your child, but there is the very real fear that the authorities could step in and remove the child from the home. If after all attempts to curb undesired behavior are exhausted and the child is in danger of harming themselves or others, even the most loving and attentive parents need help. In the world of emotional and behavioral health there are many options for parents seeking assistance for their troubled child including inpatient, outpatient and in-house therapy. If a family is not in immediate crisis, In-House Behavioral Therapy is an option and is typically less stressful and possibly more effective in some cases than the more commonly known state run programs and other on-site services. Calling upon a certified therapist is often less intimidating and is especially appealing to parents who may not be ready to turn to a state run organization for help. A qualified In-House Behavioral Assistant can help to identify problems, make recommendations for treatment and begin therapy with a child in his own environment. “I wish I had known about in-home services years ago,” said Sara. “That would have been a much easier call to make, we would have gotten help so much sooner.” Atlantic City resident Diana Garces is a certified Behavioral Therapist who offers the unique service of in-house therapy to children ages 5 through 17. She is a women who genuinely cares about others and has a passion for helping people. Diana knew she wanted to be in the field of helping others since High School, it was something she was naturally good at and she found it deeply rewarding. Diana received her bachelors degree in psychology from Kean University and she is currently pursuing her masters degree. She has been working in the field as a Behavioral Assistant with a local agency for over a year and has already helped many children with behavioral problems. “Having a professional therapist come to our house to work with our son has made a huge difference in his life. He was much more comfortable in his own home and quickly began to trust Diana, his BA (Behavioral Assistant),” said Sara.

What are the benefits of in-house therapy as opposed to other options? For one, the parents are there to see what is going on and have the opportunity to learn from the experts how to be a proactive part of the solution. “House calls are more effective because otherwise you do not get the opportunity to see what is really going on in the home,” said Diana. “When you go to an office, you don’t see the same results as you do seeing the child in the home environment. Most of the time the child is home when the behavior that needs addressing occurs.” Typically, the children see their therapist twice a week. BAYADA Pediatrics Celebrates Nurses In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a “Nurse Day” in October of the following year. However, it would take another 29 years before the nation’s skilled and compassionate nurses received a day of their own. President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation designating “National Recognition Day for Nurses” to be May 6, 1982. Celebrate Earth Day with ACUA Atlantic City Electric, South Jersey Gas and a variety of other sponsors are partnering with the Atlantic County Utilities Authority for an Earth Day celebration not to be missed! This year’s 24th annual celebration has many exciting events in addition to traditional favorites. The fun begins at 10 a.m. and goes until 4 p.m., Sunday, April 27, 2014 (rain or shine) at 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township. There are lots of free fun, educational activities for everyone. Over 100 vendors, crafters and exhibitors will be part of the celebration. “There are exciting sustainable environmental initiatives happening right here in Atlantic County,” said ACUA President Rick Dovey. “We want to encourage everyone to think globally and act locally,” Dovey added. “The Earth Day celebration not only entertains those who attend, but also helps educate participants about the importance of protecting our environment and how easily we can all do our part,” said Dovey. At this year’s Earth Day celebration, the ACUA will be recognizing the 23 Atlantic County Schools which participated in the 2013 national recycling competition, “Recycle Bowl.” Earth Day offers the perfect opportunity to recognize the great work of our school leaders.

Wind, Solar and Wastewater Facility Tours
The public is welcome to take tours of New Jersey’s first commercial wind farm. Participants will be shuttled to and from the wind farm from the Environmental Park in Egg Harbor Township beginning at 10 a.m. (last shuttle at 3:15 p.m.) This will feature tours of the ACUA Wastewater Treatment Facility, solar project and green roof.
Eco Hayrides
Eco Hayrides, a perennial favorite, take visitors to the top of the landfill for panoramic views of the area, including Atlantic City and the Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm.
Seedlings
The ACUA will be giving out a mixed variety of tree seedlings, as well as seed packets for spring planting.
Entertainment
There will be live entertainment throughout the day on two stages. Valerie Vaughn will be performing songs of NJ culture, history and environment. Bash the Trash will be performing their ‘Family Bash’ to entertain and educate audience members with their trademark mix of science, environment, music and humor. Woodford Cedar Run will be on stage with their Raptors and Reptiles program

and will have a table exhibit with live birds of prey and reptiles. Bill Kerwood will be performing “The Magic of Recycling” an interactive variety show featuring comedy and magic! Don’t miss the Turtlesinger, an interactive program and where you will learn about, touch and feed live turtles. Live animal shows will also be featured by the Cape May County Park and Zoo. Other highlights include games, live music, a puppet show, pony rides and pictures with Supercan.
Wildlife, Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ and the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Also coming is the Wetlands Institute, which will feature an interactive touch tank display and Oakhill Alpacas will be here with alpacas to meet and have your picture taken with!
Colors of the Earth 5k Fun Run
Join us for our very first Colors of the Earth 5k Fun Run. This new run is an untimed event that emphasizes fun over competition. Earth Day Wood Craft It is open to all runners and is limited to the first 200 participants. Runners will be with Home Depot Join Home Depot and make your own nature given white t-shirts and sunglasses as part of their registration fee.
