PARENTING 101: Teaching Kindness “A single act of kindness doesn’t require a long term commitment, but its effects may have long term results.”

As we approach the seasons of “Thanks” and “Giving,” many opportunities exist to teach kids the meaning of random acts of kindness. While toddlers may use “no” and “mine” as their most frequent vocabulary words, it’s also the magical age when children are introduced to sharing within their circle of family, friends, and peers. Once they have reached school age, parents and caregivers can begin to open them up to the bigger world of compassion. The holiday season is ripe with these teachable moments. Some families choose to introduce giving to others through the biblical context of the First Christmas. Others explain the plight of homelessness and have their families serve in soup kitchens and rescue missions. Organizations and scouting troops may adopt needy families who might otherwise not have a holiday celebration. A visit to a nursing home to engage residents in a craft or board game is appreciated at any time of the year, as is checking in on elderly or disabled neighbors who may be shut-in. Animal shelters are always looking for donations and caring volunteers to brighten the day of their residents awaiting adoption. For troops serving overseas, a holiday card or a care package from home can be a special welcome treat, while those serving stateside may find a festive meal with a host family to be their most meaningful gift. Empathy can also be a challenging lesson

for children to learn. Finding storybooks or shows that will encourage new perspectives with relatable characters is helpful. Ageappropriate movies will also help them to see the world through another’s vantage point. Lucy the Elephant While businesses at the Jersey Shore are packing up for the season, one historic stop is celebrating 138 years as a beachfront attraction, in what was once referred to as “South” Atlantic City. This most unusual architectural marvel, formerly known as the Elephant Bazaar was built in 1881 in Margate, New Jersey at a finished cost of $38,000. The “elephant hotel” was designed by William Free and commissioned by fellow Philadelphian and real estate speculator James V. Lafferty. The six-story, 65 feet, 90-ton novelty was used as a marketing hook to lure potential buyers in to purchase parcels of beachfront real estate. To protect his original idea, Lafferty applied for and received a patent from the U.S. Government on Dec. 5, 1882. The patent gave him the exclusive right to make, use or sell animal-shaped buildings for 17 years. Eventually Lafferty would set out to construct two other beachfront pachyderms, a smaller version in South Cape May, NJ in 1884 and a third, standing twice the size at 122 feet in Coney Island, NY in 1885. By 1900 Margate’s elephant was the only one of the three still standing. Prior to the turn of the century, tourists began flocking from Atlantic City by rail and from Ocean City by steamboat to see the unique oddity that in 1902 would come to be known as “Lucy the Elephant”. Through the years Lucy has served as a rentable summer cottage, a tavern, a restaurant, and a business office.

In 1969, a group of Margate citizens formed the Margate Civic Association, as Lucy had fallen into disrepair and was scheduled for demolition. Under the direction of Josephine Harron and Sylvia Carpenter, the group was renamed the Save Lucy Committee and given 30 days to move her to another location or pay for her demolition. This summer, the Committee celebrated 50 years of Saving Lucy! Through a successful campaign, the funds were raised and a city-owned lot was prepared for the 100-yard move to the southwest. The move date was scheduled and completed on July 20, 1970. After linemen from New Jersey Bell and Atlantic City Electric Company cleared the power lines, the ‘elephant-sized’ move was achieved in seven hours. The wooden structure was reinforced with steel and by 1974 Lucy was again opened to the public for the first time in 12 years. On January 20, 1976, the Margate Elephant was designated as a National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior. Today she is considered to be the Oldest Roadside Attraction in the United States and is also recognized as the oldest example of “zoomorphic” architecture. DreamWorks Water Park houses the world’s largest indoor wave pool at 1.5 acres, filled with 1.5 million gallons of water, the longest hygro-magnetic coaster and the tallest indoor body slide at 142 feet with a 50-foot freefall. The park also features 31 luxury cabanas

that overlook the park with prime views of Manhattan. Big SNOW: Big SNOW is North America’s first indoor snow park, and sits at over 800 ft. long, 200 ft. wide and 16 stories tall. It is equipped for professional and student training, family ski vacation preparation, corporate team building and more. Big SNOW will offer varied experiences for all skill levels and ages and will feature Snow Operating’s proprietary Terrain Based Learning method of instruction that uses specifically shaped snow features to assist with the learning process. Looking for something to do with my kids and their friends on my daughters birthday I came upon Room 4 Escape at the Hamilton Mall. We did not have a full hour and were pleased to see they had 15 minute rooms at an incredibly reasonable price! As we took on the Game Room each member of my party worked out games and puzzles and we successfully exited with only moments to spare. This family fun experience was not our first escape room, but it was the first that relied more on creative ideas then technology. We all came back days later to take on the Boardwalk Room, that we heard very few were able to escape. With 5 of us working to figure out how the creators of the rooms minds worked we again we barely made it! Those minds creative minds are Rich and his staff, who find joy in challenging patrons with loads of activities. “Once I have the story idea in my head, I start looking at the structure of the gameplay. What will propel players from one part to the next?” Room 4 Escape has several 15 minute and 1 hour rooms. doctor for asthma, but will not take their child to the doctor for anxiety. If you believe that your child is struggling with a brain disorder treat it the same way you would with any other disorder that your child might face.”

Amy Reina Hassa When we look for the mentors and heroes in our communities, sometimes we don’t have to look further than our own backyards. Such is the case with this quarter’s spotlight, Amy Reina Hassa. Amy has been a champion for kids and families of Hamilton Township for the past decade. Her journey took her from a volunteer for the school system, to coordinator for the youth choir to her eighth year as a Girl Scout leader for her current high school troop. These experiences prepared her for the bigger roles she has since undertaken. As an advocate for children, Amy has been an active member of the Hamilton Township School Board for the past four years, serving in the position as Vice President for the last two. Additionally, she is the liaison and advisor for a Stockton organization called Alpha Phi Omega, based on the principles of leadership and service. With a background in mental health, Amy has also been a member of the task force for mental health and safety for the state under the New Jersey School Board Association. She offers the following perspective: “Youth Mental Health First Aid is recognizing the differences between typical adolescence and crIsis. The first thing I want to say directly to parents is that if your child is suffering from a mental health disorder it is not a reflection on you as a parent any more than if they were suffering from a physical health disorder. So often parents will take their child to the

She outlines the following three key markers to look for: Duration: Has your child been coping with this for several weeks? Impact: Is what your child dealing with impacting their learning, relationships, and day-to-day life? Significant Change: Is your child is suddenly writing to everyone and in their letters telling them how much they mean to them? If a child is suddenly not talking to any of their friends and family, ask questions. If your child just seems is very wrong, ask questions! Amy also says technology is one of the biggest hurdles when it comes to dealing with mental health in children. Kids are constantly comparing themselves to photographs that their friends post, even if these aren’t true or accurate. She says, “We have a generation of children that have hundreds of friends, and yet no one to invite to their birthday parties”. Children watch adults learn how to create relationships and how to cope with stress and we, as adults are failing them. We need to allow our children to be bored! If children do not have activities or technology handed to them it gives them opportunities for problem-solving and creativity. When asked what one of her biggest accomplishments have been, Amy reflects back to Hurricane Sandy. Through a grant with the Mental Health Association, the funding enabled her to train in mental health first aid for both youth and adults. She also works closely with groups like the “Spread the Love Foundation”, promoting honest dialogue about suicide, addiction, and mental health issues. Amy lives in Mays Landing with her husband George and their son and daughter.
