Notes From The Editor Louis Mascolo
Ready, Set, Go!
Atlantic Shore Living VP of Project Development Lou@AtlanticShoreLiving.com
Welcome to our very first print and web addition of Atlantic Shore Living, Hamilton Township edition. I’ll be serving as your host and co-editor along with our very talented staff. We have put together an entertaining and valuable monthly publication and sister internet website, www. AtlanticShoreLiving.com. We will be bringing you Local news, tips on Local Dining, Hot Spots, Business Spotlights, Hometown Heroes, Contests and Puzzles, and special focus on area Real Estate and so much more. Our goal is to bring you information you can use, right now. This publication is the result of decades of previous publication experience. Through our many print and web enterprises, we’ve found what our readers enjoy the most, and placed it in this, our newest baby. Our goal is to make it so good you will want you to pick up our mag or read it online every month and take advantage of our deals. In this inaugural issue, we introduce two remarkable Hamilton Township women who’s light shines brightly over the heart of Atlantic County. Laurie Zaleski, owner of Funny Farm Animal Rescue is ‘mom’ to over 600 homeless and neglected animals. This year she published her memoir Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals, earning her national and international praise. Laurie even received a congratulations call from our state governor on her book’s success and commitment to her animal family.
4
Our second remarkable woman is featured in our Business Spotlight. Cheryl Caliri of Earth Angels Center for Healing Arts has been the light during some of the darkest days of the pandemic. Her dedication to the caregivers and first responders of our community continues to shine brightly as We navigate these remarkable times. Of course, we welcome your comments and suggestions to bring you what you want and to make it even better. And we’re off! Enjoy! Contact Lou at Lou@AtlanticShoreLiving.com

Spirits in North Cape May, while commuting from their Linwood home for ten years. Their next investment brought them award winning success with the opening of their first food and beverage venture, Pork Island Grill in Ocean City, NJ in 2019. There, their paths converged with their Executive Chef, Israel “Izzy” Rodriquez. Izzy grew up with a classic ‘hard knock’ life style of Atlantic City. As a graduate of the Class of 2001, he went on to study at the Academy of Culinary Arts in Mays Landing and graduated with honors. He met his wife, Alisha of Philadelphia in 2003. Alisha was pursuing a career in the Hospitality Industry that has since evolved into the position of General Manager at the Inn at Sugar Hill, where she works in tandem with her husband. Izzy’s culinary career has brought him from the kitchens of Maloney’s in Margate, to Sous Chef at the Continental at the Pier Shops in Atlantic City to gourmet dining as an Executive Sous Chef with Robert’s at Taj Mahal Casino Hotel, followed by nine years with Chickie & Petes. Like Wendy and Vic, Izzy and Alisha are also proud parents, raising 17 year old Shayla, 13 year old Angelise and 8 year old Israel III. With his family as well as his personal relationship with his faith keeping him grounded, Izzy had one ultimate goal: to run his own steak and seafood restaurant. As the stars began to align for the Rodriguez Family, Wendy had a goal of her own. She wanted to harness a lifetime of business prowess and own and operate her own property. She wouldn’t have to wait long to see her dream realized. Continued on page 8

Inn of Sugar Hill Continued from page 7
In 2020, as the world was reeling from the first phase of the pandemic, businesses, particularly restaurants in the bedroom communities of South Jersey, were still recovering from the loss of five casinos and a devastated economy. Without financial relief, the food and beverage industry was among those most severely affected. With a heavy heart, prior owners of the Inn closed the doors in October 2020. With their entrepreneurial spirit, the Fabietti’s imagined an opportunity to resurrect this celebrated property while Izzy and Alisha dreamed of managing it. After a successful summer of outdoor dining, the four opened formal dining indoors this past October. Each night they’ve rolled out the red carpet, with Izzy’s inaugural Steak and Seafood menu. House favorites have included: cold water Maine lobster tails, certified angus beef and bone in center cut pork chops.
8
The acquisition of Sugar Hill by these four could only be appreciated more by ‘William Moore’ himself; the original owner and statesman who envisioned his beautiful property perched atop a high bluff, overlooking the Great Egg Harbor River. Today we imagine he is resting more comfortably knowing his beloved homestead is being lovingly managed under the guidance of the Inn’s first female owner and this exceptional team of Hospitality ambassadors. Welcome to Mays Landing!

In the Center of Mays Landing’s War Memorial Park, stands a priceless gift bequeathed to the people of Hamilton Township. In 1925, Mays Landings’ first citizen of color, Mr. John Wesley Underhill left his community several gifts that are still enjoyed by residents and visitors today. They include the fountain with park benches, Underhill Park on Old Egg Harbor Road and a gymnasium addition on the (then ‘new’) Mays Landing High School.

Key to the Past
The Mystery Behind the Deadly Mays Landing Train Disaster On August 11, 1880 the mill town of Mays Landing, NJ was called to serve in a most unexpected and tragic circumstance. Just seven weeks before, the spur for the new railroad line, a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad, (PRR), opened a city to shore route. The West Jersey Line connected the county’s seat with the cities of Philadelphia and Atlantic City. It came by way of R.D. Wood and Sons to move both passengers and freight, but more specifically cotton and its by-products, following the American Civil War. Cotton mills and their noted industrialist owners would often dominate both the economy and politics in the latter part of the nineteenth century. On this historic date, the first charter excursion would have been eagerly anticipated by the 1300+ working class men, women and children from Philadelphia. A welcomed excursion to escape to the Jersey Shore! Passengers were Irish immigrants hailing from St. Anne’s Literary Society and neighboring Philadelphia churches. They left early from the city, taking the ferry into Camden then, leaving for the shore on the twenty four chartered passenger cars.
16
Rather than run one consist to Atlantic City, just prior to departure the party was divided into two trains, comprised of sixteen and eight passenger cars, respectively. Not only were the cars over occupancy limits, but rules of the road would necessitate enforcement regarding lag time between the two. On this first charter of the inaugural season, their neglect would prove a deadly error. After a day of pleasant memories at the beach, the weary travelers boarded the cars for the return. The first train left on a 6PM departure, followed by the second at 6:05PM. Seventeen miles from Atlantic City, during an evening summer storm, the trains reached the village of Mays Landing. They cleared the single track for the southbound express, just beyond the trestle bridge over the Great Egg Harbor River. While the first train was still clearing the last two cars, the second locomotive telescoped the first in a rear end collision, erupting in a boiler explosion. Passengers in the last wooden car were scalded by the soaring temperatures of the steam cylinder with estimates as high as 200 degrees. Thirty fatalities and sixty injuries were recorded due to

The accident scene overwhelmed the village as the passengers nearly outnumbered the entire population of Mays Landing. Unprepared for the extent of the calamity, neighbors became unknowing first responders, as their homes were transformed into makeshift emergency rooms, morgues and waiting areas for over a thousand stranded passengers. A national telegraph system would alert dozens of newspapers across the country of the tragedy, while acknowledging the kindness extended by the citizens of the South Jersey community. Locally, research into state and county archives have implied a lack of candor in reports to area government agencies and public records. Continued on page 18

1880 Train Wreck Continued from page 17
Between the cities of Philadelphia and Atlantic City the veil is lifting on the clues. Hospital records. Board meeting minutes. Court records. County documents. “In an era when rails ruled the roads and class determined privilege”, this story had very nearly been lost to time. In 2018, an effort was launched to bring an award winning filmmaker to Mays Landing to create a made for television documentary. Funding fell through and interest in the project waned. A historic narrative account of Between the Shore and the City-Tragedy in Mays Landing has since been published Pen and Ink portrayal of the tragedy as it unfolded in 1880. and is available on Amazon.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Farm The Story of Funny Farm Tucked away in a quiet corner of Mays Landing, miracles happen everyday. To experience over 600 rescued animals roaming free on the compound is in itself a joy. Realizing the remarkable true life story behind this ‘labor of love’ pulls at your heartstrings!
As a young mom, Anne McNulty made the courageous decision to leave her abusive husband. Her family’s survival would depend on her tenacity. With four children in tow and without a steady income, their struggle often became desperate. It was Anne’s passion for animals that kept her children distracted as they navigated their uncertain future. Anne secured a position as an animal control officer, exposing her to the sad reality of lost and abandoned animals. Extermination. Disheartened, Anne began rescuing those scheduled for euthanasia long before it became a popular trend on social media. Although they lived sparingly, what they had

they shared with their extended family of dogs, cats, bunnies, sheep, goats, pigs and chickens. Some had missing eyes, feet, legs, and tails but Anne did her best to save them all and give them a happy life. She would affectionately refer to her menagerie of misfits as the Funny Farm. It was a title that would live on long after those early years. It was Anne’s dream to one day own a sanctuary where animals would roam free, knowing compassion and love, food and shelter–all while receiving necessary medical care. A permanent, safe and healthy environment, offering adoption for some and for others a forever home. It was a tall order for a woman with little means. It would take a miracle to bring her dream to fruition and the clock was ticking. Anne was battling cancer. Anne’s children, then in their 20s, were blazing their own trails. Her daughter Laurie was an art major and found success as a graphic artist with a governmental agency. With the news of Anne’s diagnosis, Laurie
made it her mission to fulfill her mother’s life goal. The future suddenly had a date stamp: 2000. She needed to find a home with an expansive property that could easily accommodate their thirtysomething adoptees. Her search brought them to a rural area of Mays Landing in Atlantic County, NJ. Welcome Home
The Story of Mays Landing In the heart of Atlantic County’s seat is our quaint, thriving community of Mays Landing, rich in its natural resources and historic treasures. Our story begins centuries ago with our first residents: The People of the Lenni Lenape Tribe in the Southern Unami Territory of South Jersey. Their presence is evidenced by their arrowheads and artifacts still being discovered today on the banks of our local rivers and creeks. The Lenape were said to have spent their summers on the Jersey Shores and in Southeastern Pennsylvania in the off seasons. Despite being the first Tribe to sign a treaty with the American government, most Lenape People were permanently relocated to Oklahoma in the mid-1800s. South Jersey’s early explorers arrived in the region by way of sailing ships up the
Great Egg Harbor River. In 1740, Captain George Mey, after whom Mays Landing is named, found the area to be ideal for shipbuilding and as a trading port. Up through 1880, more than two hundred vessels were built in the area now known as Gaskill Park, with lumber from the area’s dense forests of pine and oak. By the end of the century, wooden shipbuilding began to disappear as rail lines became the primary source of transportation over long distances. For more background on Mays Landing’s storied past, follow our monthly columns on www.AtlanticShoreLiving.com.
