Tip #1: Start with a

lightweight backpack.

Make sure the backpack is made of a lightweight but durable material.

Tip #2: Make sure the shoulder

straps are wide and padded.

Wide, padded straps provide support and prevent the straps from becoming too tight. Your child’s straps should be snug, but not so tight that they cause discomfort.

Tip #3: The back should also be padded.

Padding that sits against your child’s back will provide additional support and prevent discomfort.

Tip #4: Look for a backpack with a waist strap.

A waist strap holds the contents closer to your child’s back, which can help him or her maintain balance.

Tip #5: Multiple compartments are a plus.

If your child’s backpack has multiple compartments, it will be easier to evenly distribute the weight of the items inside. The heaviest items should be packed low and toward the center of the bag.

Tip #6: Both straps should be worn at all times.

Make sure your child is always wearing both straps. Wearing both straps can also help distribute the weight more evenly and prevent your child from leaning to one side, which can cause pain in the neck, back, or shoulders. It also makes losing his or her balance less likely.

Tip #7: Do not overload!

Your child’s backpack should weight no more than 15 percent of his or her total body weight. Anything more can force children to slouch or hunch to compensate for the extra weight. Remove any items that are unnecessary, and encourage your children to carry heavier items in their arms, if possible.

IT HAPPENED:

On the West Jersey Line

any years ago streets were made of dirt and people traveled in wagons or carriages pulled by horses. Towns like Mays Landing, New Jersey were small communities where people worked and lived together. During the nineteenth century, when Abraham Lincoln was President, railroads were built to make traveling faster and easier. By 1869, trains could take travelers nearly anywhere in the country. Cars, trucks and airplanes hadn’t been invented yet. Trains became the best way to visit other areas or move products from large farms to factories. Machinery had been invented that would turn crops into useful items. During the 1800s, cotton was grown in the southern states because of the warmer temperatures and the free labor by plantation slaves. It was harvested and put onto trains where it was taken to cotton mills in northern states like New Jersey. Mays Landing had a cotton mill where many people from the town worked. The owners of the cotton mill also built houses for the workers to live in, a company store where they could buy what they needed and a one room schoolhouse for the children. Some children even worked in the cotton mill. It was called the Mays Landing Water Power Company.

In 1880, the owners of the cotton mill built a railroad from the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Atlantic City, New Jersey. The railroad also had a spur in Mays Landing, where empty railcars could be left at the mill to have the bales of cotton unloaded. After the products like towels and fabrics were made from cotton, they were loaded back on the trains. Freight cars were attached to locomotives and sent by rail to the city of Philadelphia. Once they arrived there, the Pennsylvania Railroad could move the finished products to many other parts of the country. This time in history was called the Industrial Era. During these years, steam engine trains had a very big part in developing the United States. Locomotives were also called “Iron Horses”, and soon they were replacing horses as the better transportation choice over long distances. Rail lines didn’t just move products and raw materials. They were also built to transport people in passenger cars. The railroad that was built with the spur to the cotton mill in Mays Landing was called the West Jersey Line. In June of 1880 it had just started taking excursion trips from the city to the boardwalk in Atlantic City. People from Philadelphia couldn’t wait

to get to the shore where they could find some relief from the summer’s heat. Churches from Philadelphia made plans to take a train ride to Atlantic City on Wednesday, August 11, 1880. Nearly 1800 people took two trains that morning from Camden, NJ and arrived at the shore at 9AM. The day was a little cloudy, but the travelers were happy to be visiting the ocean, many for the first time. In this time of the Industrial Era, new Americans were arriving from countries in Eastern Europe in search of work. Most of the passengers that day were young Irish immigrants of St. Anne’s Parish, who worked in factories in Philadelphia and its suburbs. After a day of enjoying the beach and the ocean, it was time to return to the city. As they boarded the two trains to leave at 6:00PM, a terrible summer storm began. The lightning bolts crackled and the thunder clouds rumbled as the wooden passenger cars rolled along the steel rails. Seventeen miles away, the trains had to make a brief stop in Mays Landing, New Jersey. The rain continued as they arrived just minutes apart. From the opposite direction, a third train was heading on the same track that the two trains shared. A ‘siding’ in Mays Landing gave the first two trains someplace to pull aside as it went by. Speed, weather and distance between the two following each other were off by just seconds. The engineer realized that the train he was following hadn’t cleared the tracks ahead of him. He quickly blew the whistle four times to warn everyone on board that the two trains were about to crash. Just before the second train hit the back of the first, the locomotive reached the trestle over the Great Egg Harbor River. People began jumping into the river below, including the engineer and conductor. Standing on the platform of the end of the last car was a twenty year old named James Sweeney. Without time to avoid the charging engine, the young man was pinned and crushed between the two trains. As the rainstorm continued, passengers tried to escape the steam that was

building up in the wooden car. With windows that were tightly sealed to keep the rain out, some people broke through the glass before dropping into the river below. The steam continued to scorch the innocent travelers in the last car. There were more passengers on the three trains that night than there were people who lived in Mays Landing. Everyone in town came out to help and rescue the many injured with whatever they could. So many were burned on the outside from the steam and even more had inhaled the steam and burned their throat and lungs. Before that night was over, six people in Mays Landing had lost their lives. Over the next few weeks, the count of losses grew higher as the victims did not heal from their injuries. Upwards of thirty or more people did not survive the wreck on that stormy summer night. After the disaster, the small community of Mays Landing quietly went back to working at the cotton mill. Atlantic City continued to grow as a seaside resort and today Philadelphia still remains one of America’s biggest industrial cities. Train travel continues to be a popular transportation option, especially in the northeastern United States of America.

Inside Out Caramel Apples Prep: 30 minutes Ingredients

3 Granny Smith (or any firm) apples 1 lemon 2 cups caramel squares 2T corn syrup Directions. Cut your apples in half. Use a melon baller to scoop out the insides, leaving about 1/4 inch around all edges.

Set the apple halves in muffin tins to keep them steady. Chill in the refrigerator until the caramel has set, about 20 minutes. Cut into slices (spray the knife with cooking spray for easier cutting; a serrated or tomato knife works well).

(This keeps them from turning brown.) In a microwave-proof bowl, melt the caramels and corn syrup. Try 30 seconds, then 15 seconds - just enough to melt them. Stir to mix. Allow to cool for about 2-3 minutes. Wipe the apples with a paper towel to remove as much lemon juice as possible. (Caramel wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stick to a wet apple.) Spoon the caramel into the hollowed out apples until just below the top. (This can be a very sticky stage, so you may want to wipe your fingers with some vegetable oil first.)

Last March, Pals Socks kicked off their buy 1 pair, donate 1 pair of Pals charity program with Cradles to Crayons of Philadelphia!
