To experience over 600 rescued animals roaming free on the compound is in itself a joy. Realizing the remarkable true life story behind this ‘labor of love’ pulls at your heartstrings! As a young mom, Anne McNulty made the courageous decision to leave her abusive husband. Her family’s survival would depend on her tenacity. With four children in tow and without a steady income, their struggle often became desperate. It was Anne’s passion for animals that kept her children distracted as they navigated their uncertain future.

Future plans include the addition of a Welcome and Education Center as well as publishing her own story. Participants will build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to meet the Lifeguard certification course requirements.This course introduces participants to lifesaving skills, such as in-water rescues, proper use of a rescue tube, as well as teaching them first aid, CPR and how to use an AED. In addition, this course creates a lifeguarding feeder program to help aquatics supervisors recruit the most promising Lifeguarding candidates for future employment. Boardwalk Hall
One of the most recognized landmarks on Atlantic City’s skyline is historic Boardwalk Hall. Opened in 1929, it was considered an architectural marvel in its prime. The barrel vaulted ceiling at a height of 137 feet was the largest clear span space of that era. The Hall became home to the Miss America Pageant in 1940. Designed to extend the tourist season at the shore, the tradition dates back to 1921. Later In 1932, Boardwalk Hall unveiled what is considered to be a masterpiece in musical instrumentation. The World’s Largest Pipe Organ took in excess of two years to complete, recognized as the loudest instrument ever constructed as recorded by Guinness Book of World Records. This massive organ, built by the Midmer-Losh company of Merrick, NY, is estimated to have 33,000 pipes. In May 1937, two years prior to America’s involvement in World War II, the Hindenburg left Frankfurt Germany for the Lakehurst Naval Air Station. As it made its descent at the conclusion of its three day voyage, the hydrogen-filled airship could be seen soaring above Atlantic City, sixty miles south of its destination. Making it’s approach as it reached the airfield the zeppelin burst into flames, killing 35 civilians and crew members. Once the country entered World War II, Boardwalk Hall would be recommissioned as a military headquarters and training facility. The base would come to be known as “Camp Boardwalk” during the

period from 1941-1945. During this critical period in U.S. History, dozens of American ships had been sunk by German submarines just off the Jersey coastline. As a result, nightly curfews were instituted to protect northeast cities from a potential attack. In August 1964 with the nomination of presidential hopeful, Lyndon B. Johnson, Atlantic City stepped into the arena of national politics. The Hall hosted in excess of 20,000 delegates for the August Democratic National Convention. Following at the weeks’ end, The Beatles performed one of their scheduled concerts before 18,000 devoted fans at Convention Hall. The fee to the venue on this second U.S. concert Tour was $25,000. During their stay in Atlantic City,

John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song Every Little Thing, which appeared on the Beatles For Sale album at the end of that year. A black mark was left on the city after these events when the press reported a lack of updated facilities, including air conditioning at (then) Convention Hall. The opportunity to reclaim it’s good standing as a viable resort would come with the opening of Resorts Casino in 1978. Two decades later, a new Convention Center was introduced as part of the city’s gateway redevelopment project. The former Convention Hall would then emerge rebranded as “Boardwalk Hall” in December 1998. The $90 million restoration of Boardwalk Hall, transformed the property into a special events facility with a seating capacity for nearly 15,000. The innovative renovation received nine architectural and engineering awards, including the 2003 National Preservation Award and Design and Construction magazine’s 2002 Renovation Project of the Year. In 2017, with the loss of New Jersey
lawmaker Jim Whelan, a bill was passed to rename the then 91-year old Boardwalk Hall. By unanimous vote, the event center was renamed Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in honor of the late Atlantic City mayor, state assemblyman and state senator. In 2019, through funding with the Casino Reinvestment and Development Authority (CRDA) and the Foundation of the Atlantic City Free Public Library, the Hall became home to the Atlantic City Experience. The exhibit, located in the Hall’s lobby, is a self guided tour through Atlantic City’s history, presented in a modern, creative design. Business hours are weekdays from 9AM5PM. Weekly guided tours of the complex are offered at 10AM Wednesdays, followed by a recital at noon on the world famous pipe organ. Admission is free, donations are appreciated. Boardwalk Hall is also listed on the United States Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark. For more information, www.boardwalkorgans.org

Five things someone on the autism spectrum wants you to know Isabelle Marks Mosca, FACES 4 Autism Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month is in April, but for many families every day is about acceptance. Autism New Jersey defines Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) “a neurobiological disorder characterized by impairments in social communication and interaction as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. Individuals with autism have difficulty interacting with others: building relationships, using language, regulating their emotions, and understanding others’ points of view.” The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released a report in 2018 showing the rate of autistic children identified at 1 in 59 children nationally. This statistic is based on the CDC’s evaluation of health and educational records of 8-year-old children in 2014 in 11 states. New Jersey has the highest rates of the states studied, with 1 in 34. Our family started the FACES 4 Autism support group in 2002 to connect with other families, compare notes and to meet others who were experiencing autism. In 2020, we help over 750 families every year. Learning from families for the past 18 years, these are five things that we have learned from our loved ones which can help those who work with special needs students, play with them or love them.

ACUA’S 30th Annual Earth Day Festival This year ACUA will be celebrating its 30th Annual Earth Day Festival on Sunday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township. ACUA’s Earth Day is held rain or shine, and packs a full slate of free, fun, educational activities for kids and families. This year’s celebration includes many of ACUA’s perennial favorites as well as new vendors, workshops and entertainment. Over 150 vendors, crafters, food trucks and educational exhibitors will be participating. “Looking back, it’s pretty amazing to see how the ACUA has grown over the past 30 years. We’ve been able to expand our services and reduce our carbon footprint with renewable energy, alternative fuel vehicles and many other green initiatives. Earth Day gives us a chance to share what we’re doing with the public and to welcome people to see how waste is handled in Atlantic County. It also gives us an opportunity to recognize many of the great local environmental and nonprofit organizations that work to help our region. Earth Day at ACUA has grown to be the area’s largest Earth Day celebration thanks to all of the incredible sponsors and volunteers who make this event possible,” notes ACUA president Rick Dovey.

Free Workshops
Free workshops will be offered every hour from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the ACUA’s amphitheater. Learn how to maximize limited space with container gardening, get smart, green cooking tips from “Ellie’s Thrifty Kitchen,” or learn how to attract and support endangered Monarch butterflies. There will also be a workshop at the Recycling Center on how to build a rain barrel, a Native Plant Walk at 12 noon and composting demonstrations in the Community Garden all day.

The ACUA will be giving out free seedlings and free seed packets while supplies last!
Wind, Solar and Wastewater Facility Tours
This is the 15th year ACUA will be offering free shuttles to visit New Jersey’s first commercial wind farm. Shuttles travel to the wind farm from the Environmental Park in Egg Harbor Township from 10 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. Get a close look at these five elegant turbines and learn how ACUA’s Wastewater Treatment Facility uses wind and solar power to clean millions of gallons of water every day.

These super cute egg carton chicks are the perfect kids’ craft for spring. Grab some egg cartons, paint, and a few other craft supplies to make these spring chicks! A fun kids’ craft project to make for Easter or as a rainy day activity!
Directions For Egg Carton Chicks 1. Cut apart two egg holders from the carton and trim off the excess on the edges. 2. Glue the two pieces together. 3. Paint and allow to dry. 4. Add a beak and some eyes.
And that’s it! With such few supplies needed, this is a great last minute craft for a rainy day. I had everything I needed in my craft supply stash.

Ron Meischker Marine life is one of our most treasured assets at the Jersey Shore. As a representative on the Great Egg Harbor River Council and an advisor to the NJ Marine Fisheries Council, Ron Meischker is keenly aware of their value to our state’s tourism industry as well as the ecosystem..
In 2010, Ron developed a 501(c3) non profit, the Patcong Creek Foundation, serving as president. With his fundraising power, he set out to sponsor tuition for marine science summer campers and local ecology field trips. His vision of educating youth in the marine sciences prompted him to further develop the Seashore Science Center. When opened, the Somers Point facility will provide a hands on experience for kids of all ages, residents and visitors alike. The exhibits currently under construction are being designed with a concentration on STEAM -Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. At presstime, opening was tentatively scheduled for Spring 2020. In under a decade, the PC Foundation has established a crabbing event that has quickly grown to the largest crabbing tournament in the United States. Participants from last summer’s event represented fourteen states in the “Assault on Patcong Creek”. The Foundation is also host to three stream and wetland clean ups to preserve South Jersey’s coastal rivers and bays. Dates for 2020 include: Steelman Bay-March; Patcong Creek-May; Tuckahoe-Corbin City WIldlife Management Area-October 1n November of 2019, in association with Film Reel Productions, Ron premiered his first Tournament documentary for PCF. Ron’s work with the Foundation also prepared him for his position as councilman for the city of Somers Point; the city’s harbor master; chairman of the city’s Republican Club and member of the Somers Point Zoning Board of Adjustment. In his capacity he led the charge to eliminate single use plastic bags in his district, as currently emulated by dozens of New Jersey’s shore towns.
