Dave Matthews Band celebrates 25th anniversary with fans, bands they admire
In the history of popular music, there is a very short list of bands that have been able to not only achieve chart success, but have managed to remain vital and relative after their initial taste of stardom while maintaining a massive, dedicated following of fans that is willing to come out to concerts year after year. The Rolling Stones, U2 and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band come to mind as acts that have been able to achieve this feat. Another is The Dave Matthews Band. Since their 1994 debut “Under the Table and Dreaming,” The Dave Matthews Band has proven that they are one of those rare bands that has meaningful longevity. While it can sometimes be difficult to predict or explain why certain bands stand the test of time while others fade back into obscurity, it’s easy to see why this band has remained at the top for so long: their dedication to their musical craft, refusal to comprise on its principles and devotion to one of the most loyal fan bases in modern music. But what started it all for the group was an immensely talented lineup of musicians. Page 4
www.AtlanticCityLive.net
South African-born Dave Matthews began his performing career in Charlottesville, Va., in the mid-1980s, honing his craft and falling in with some of the top musicians on the scene. Possessing a unique voice and great skill as a rhythm guitarist, Matthews performed regularly at a local Charlottesville club called Miller’s, where he initially worked as a bartender. It was here that he encountered future DMB saxophonist LeRoi Moore and drummer Carter Beauford and asked them to perform on a demo of some songs he had written. The original lineup was solidified with then-16-year-old bassist Stephan Lessard and keyboardist Peter Griesar, who would end up leaving the band in 1993. The final piece of the puzzle was violinist Boyd Tinsley who joined in 1992. Perhaps the reason why the band and its fans connect so strongly to one another is because there was a time period before the platinum albums, hit singles, videos and soldout stadiums when it was just them. Although the lineup is comprised entirely of all-star, virtuoso-level talent, The Dave Matthews Band wasn’t assembled by some producer or mogul trying to cash in. Spring, 2011
The Dave Matthews Band celebrates its 25th anniversary with four Dave Matthews Band Caravans around the country. It’s first stop—Atlantic City—will showcase the band playing a three-hour set each night of the three-day festival. Dave Matthews and long time collaborator, guitarist Tim Reynolds, will perform an acoustic set 3:15-4:00p.m., Saturday on the Atlantic Stage. — photos provided by The Fun Star
The band members made sacrifices to keep moving forward and that initial group of Charlottesville fans kept growing and growing to the point where the band was already a phenomenon before they released their first album. This was a partnership between musicians and fans, with each side keeping up their end of the deal. The fans worked hard to spread the good word, travelled insane distances to see shows and had enough belief in the band to allow them the freedom to play shows their way without having to resort to a stagnant collection of greatest hits night after night. The fans’ payoff was that The Dave Matthews Band never forgot where they came from and never forgot what it took to get to such a high level. As a result you have a band that never plays the same setlist twice, radically altering shows from night to night with extended jams that work off of the energy from the crowd. To see The Dave Matthews Band live is to see a group of musicians who have never tired of seeking the ultimate high that only great music can take you to. Matthew’s voice is an amazing instrument that can convey every human emotion. He’ll go from a whisper to a scream to a falsetto all within the same song and in doing so take the listener on a rare journey though life’s great joys and tragedies. When the late Moore passed away several years back, the band could have retreated, gone on hiatus or called it quits, but instead they found inspiration in their fallen friend and bandmate and rose to the occasion, producing the brilliant “Big Whiskey & The Groo Grux King” in his honor. One of the band’s great strengths has always been its ability to write songs that continue to resonate with audiences. They’ll have you on your feet dancing to the care-free vibe of “Tripping Billies,” “Ants Marching” and “What Would You Say” one minute and will then bring you to a different, more melancholy place with classic ballads like “Crash,” “Satellite,” “Spoon,” “Cry Freedom,” “Crush” or “Where Are You Going.” As a songwriter, Matthews has the unique ability to write poignant, insightful lyrics that always maintain a Spring, 2011
high level of both melodic and poetic structure. When he sings a line like “Funny the way it is. Not right or wrong. Somebody’s broken heart, becomes your favorite song,” it’s something that offers a glimpse into the inner-workings of a songwriter’s mind where in order to bring joy to others through art, you have to suffer the pain and heartache and make the sacrifice to be willing to share it. The band is also not afraid to get political. “Don’t Drink the Water,” for example, tackled the subject of apartheid in Matthews’ homeland and the persecution of Native Americans. Although they’ve released classic albums and hit singles, it is as a live act that The Dave Matthews Band will most likely always be remembered first and foremost. Their instrumental jams are the things of legend and there’s no telling what song you’re going to hear next. So it’s foolish to even attempt to predict. The Dave Matthews Band Caravan is the latest chapter in the band’s memorable history. It is fitting that the band – surely future members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – decided to celebrate their 20th anniversary just the way fans would hope: surrounded by fellow DMB fans and music lovers enjoying great rock at outdoor summer festivals. Bader Field in Atlantic City is the latest stop on the band’s seemingly endless journey. A journey that begins and ends with a community of fans that likes of which are rarely ever seen. www.AtlanticCityLive.net

David Ryan Harris Massive success as a mainstream artist may have eluded David Ryan Harris to this point, but that hasn’t stopped the talented singer, guitarist and songwriter from making his mark as a solo artist, with his bands Follow for Now and Brand New Immortals and as a touring musician with John Mayer. One of the most striking things about Harris is the emotion he puts into each word he sings. Blessed with a powerful voice and an ability to use it for all it’s worth, Harris always delivers inspiring live performances.

Mariachi El Bronx While many bands choose to go down alternate musical paths during their career rather than remain stagnant, the Los Angeles-based punk band The Bronx took things to another level by not only releasing an album of mariachi music, but by also performing in traditional Mexican outfits under the name Mariachi El Bronx. The band members had contemplated exploring mariachi music for several years before actually making the leap. Since that time, they have been able to flip-flop between performing in this style and going back to their original hardcore punk mode for shows as The Bronx. Go to www.thebronxxx. com to watch a live video of the band performing “Mariachi El Bronx” at Coachella.

The band’s first live album, “From Space and Beyond,” was just released on June 21. Rebelution Hailing from Santa Barbara, Calif., the reggae band Rebelution has amassed a large following in a short period of time by writing melodies that are catchy and lyrics that are both well crafted and 5:30 -6:30 socially conscious. Their 2007 Pacific Stage debut album, “Courage to Grow,” was a huge success, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart. Only two years later, Rebelution topped itself with “Bright Side of Life,” which not only topped the reggae charts but was the third most downloaded album on iTunes in America upon its release. A new album is currently in the works. Both Rebelution albums can be streamed for free on www.rebelutionmusic.com .

Lotus
Lotus is a band that thrives on its individuality and creativity and has never been afraid to take chances. The instrumental quartet came together at Indiana’s Goshen College and developed their sound by fusing electronic, jazz, funk and rock. True road warriors, Lotus built their following through extensive live touring, word of mouth and a dedication to the jam-band ethos of allowing and encouraging the recording of their concerts. Magnificent lighting has always been a part of the band’s show and they also on occasion go all out by dressing in costumes and performing various theme-based concerts such as the 2008 “Live Fast Die Young: the 27 Conspiracy” show in Philadelphia, where band members dressed as Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Pigpen and Jim Morrison and performed songs by each artist. The Head and the Heart
As part of the roster on the legendary Sub Pop Records, Seattle’s The Head and The Heart are part of a legacy that includes some of the biggest bands in rock history. But rather than trying to fit into some sort of niche, the band has forged their own way with music that is centered around lush, rich harmonies and instantly memorable melodies. Prior to signing with Sub Pop, the band made a name for itself on the road during 2010 and released their self-titled debut, which was surprisingly mature for a young band that hadn’t even been together for two years. Go to www. theheadandtheheart.com to download the songs “Lost in My Mind” and “Down in the Valley” for free.
The Flaming Lips
Q Magazine once included The Flaming Lips in a list of the “50 Bands to See Before you Die,” which is a testament to the band’s ability to put on the kind of show that is unlike any other. Since the mid1980s, The Flaming Lips have released great album after great album while maintaining a huge cult following. Their shows have featured balloons, puppets, confetti and a large, human-sized plastic bubble for singer Wayne Coyne. These amusing props only help to enhance the concert. Thankfully, the psychedelic space rock of the Flaming Lips doesn’t get lost in the shuffle. Go to www.flaminglips.com to 6:45 -8:05 listen to the band’s entire set at atlantic Stage Sasquatch 2011. The band has been doing their thing since the mid 1990s when their self-titled debut album was released along with the single “Cold Beverage,” which became an MTV staple. With his rare Italian Crucianelli guitar, G. Love leads the band with a sound that is all his own. Sign up for the mailing list on www. philadelphonic to get access to the free vault of music.
Ray LaMontagne
It took hearing a Stephen Stills song on the radio to jolt Ray LaMontagne out of his boring day job at a shoe factory and onto the road as a professional musician where he found his true calling. LaMontagne has released four albums to date, beginning with 2004’s “Trouble.” His latest release, 5:45 -6:45 “God Willin’,” and the “Creek Don’t Rise” boardwalk Stage garnered several Grammy nominations and featured his backing band, the Pariah Dogs. Montagne has emerged as not only an exceptional songwriting talent, but also as a terrific live performer and singer who belts out gutsy, raw vocals like an old bluesman determined to tell his story. Fitz and the Tantrums
Soul music is what Fitz and the Tantrums do best and the band has managed to make a name for themselves by working in pop elements into this style. The Los Angeles band has been together since 2008 and in that time has released two EPs along with their 2010 full length debut, “Pickin’ Up the Pieces.” Fitz and the Tantrums let it all hang out while on stage and proved it on tour with Maroon 5. Dr. Dog

Psychedelic rockers Dr. Dog draw on influences from the 1960s as well as from indie-rock acts popular during the ’90s. The Philadelphia natives released their first album, “Toothbrush,” in 2002, toured with My Morning Jacket in 2004 and eventually signed with Park the Van Records. Dr. Dog has made appearances on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and has released five albums, including their most recent, “Shame, Shame,” which contained elements of punk rock. Dr. Dog has always been a great live act and recorded the album in a way to capture that aspect of the band. To listen to tracks from several of their albums go to www.drdogmusic.com.
Bassnectar
DJ and electronic artist Bassnectar carved out a style that is all his own through the use of complex time changes, manipulated vocal samples and tempo changes. Amos Lee
3:00 -4:00 boardwalk Stage
Amos Lee initially pursued a career in teaching before switching gears and diving head first into a full-time music career. The result for the New Jersey native was a record deal with Blue Note and a self-titled EP in 2004. Beginning with his 2005 debut self-titled LP, each of Lee’s subsequent albums was more successful than the last, culminating with his 2011 release, “Mission Bell,” which topped the Billboard 200. The album featured guest appearances from Willie Nelson and Lucinda Williams and was a huge step forward for the singer/songwriter. To watch live videos of “Careless,” “Windows Are Rolled Down,” “Listen” and “The Wind,” go to www.amosless.com.
David Gray
5:00 -6:00 boardwalk Stage
With the re-release of “White Ladder” in 2000, David Gray made the leap from respected singer/ songwriter to a mainstream-success story. The album was the first release by Dave Matthews’ ATO Records and contained the big hit “Babylon,” as well as “This Year’s Love,” “Please Forgive Me” and “Sail Away.” The follow-up album, “A New Day at Midnight,” wasn’t as well received, but still debuted at the top of the UK chart in 2002. Three years later, Gray’s album “Life in Slow Motion” was hailed as a return to form and once again commanded the top spot on the UK chart upon its release. Although he began his career in the folk rock singer/songwriter mode, Gray has opened up his sound to more pop and rock elements as his career has progressed. UPCOMING Just because the Dave Matthews Band Caravan is expected to draw about 50,000 people a day June 24 to 26 doesn’t mean the rest of the city is closing its doors and playing dead for the weekend. Hardly! Here’s a look at what else is worth checking out, as well as a glimpse of what A.C. has to offer the rest of this year. The Flaming Lips – Maybe you aren’t checking out the Caravan on the night The Flaming Lips are performing. Or maybe you just can’t get enough of them. Either way, the Lips will also headline at the House of Blues on Thursday, June 23. The Oklahoma City-based alt-rock band has been around for nearly 30 years, never selling out and always experimenting with new sounds and constantly reinventing themselves. The Atlantic City regulars always rock the House and will certainly play tunes from its latest release – a remake of Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” – as well as its classic albums, “The Soft Bulletin,” “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” and others. Always accompanied by props and great lighting, the Grammy Award winners never disappoint. What can be better than rocking out to “She Don’t Use Jelly” and “Do You Realize??” the night before the Caravan rolls into town? $35, $40. Ticketmaster or HOB box office at Showboat.
Page 16
a show, mixing reggae, rock and even some ska with odd lyrics that Dane Cook fans seem to relate to. With an unbelievable college-crowd following, O.A.R. is another Atlantic City regular, performing its acclaimed New Year’s even show here two years ago. The band is due for some new tunes. It hasn’t released an album since 2008’s less-than-stellar “All Sides.” $35, $45. Ticketmaster of HOB box office.
G. Love & Special Sauce – OK, this is getting repetitive. But G. Love & Special Sauce will also be double-dipping this weekend in Atlantic City as they bring some Philly Power to the House of Blues Saturday, June 25. The three-piece rock outfit has a huge local following and is a personal favorite of Mr. Matthews himself. The cool thing about G. Love is that he always goes balls out whether playing a small club on a beach in Cape May County or a huge venue like HOB. Prepare to hear new material from this year’s “Fixin’ To Die,” a relatively introspective, different album for G. Love. Nice. $25. Ticketmaster and HOB box office.
O.A.R. – Ditto for this band. Another member of the weekend’s Caravan, O.A.R. will headline the House of Blues on Friday, June 24, with what should be a completely different set. This jam band, which formed at Ohio State University, really knows how to put on
Robert Plant – One of the greatest rock singers of all time, the Led Zeppelin frontman has played Atlantic City several times, and the rock legend returns Saturday, June 25, with what will surely be another memorable performance at Borgata. Always willing and eager to please his fans, Plant will surely rip into some Zep classics, although they may be retooled a bit to satisfy his creative side. He may even surprise you with a song or two from his latest project, the Band of Joy. With a voice that is still stellar despite his 62 years on the planet, Robert Plant always brings his A game. He is certainly THE main reason you may want to leave the Caravan a little early one day. $85, $95. $125. Ticketmaster and Borgata box office.

CONCERTS
Others this weekend – As always, Atlantic City always offers an eclectic mix of music. Aside from the bands we already plugged, another rock legend - Peter Frampton – personifies what a live concert is all about at Borgata on Friday, June 24; Leann Rimes offers a country alternative at Resorts on Friday, June 24; trumpet extraordinaire and Sting pal Chris Botti is at the Trop on Saturday, June 25; and R&B powerhouse Boyz II Men returns to A.C. with a show at the Hilton on Saturday, June 25. Later this summer – Make sure you come back to Atlantic City after the DMB caravan leaves town. Here are plenty of reasons: Foxxhole Comedy Jam with Jamie Foxx (Caesars, July 1); rapper Rick Ross (Bader Field, July 2); Earth Wind & Fire (Borgata, July 1 and 3); comedian Denis Leary (Borgata, July 2); R&B sensation Erykah Badu (House of Blues, July 2); talk-show master Craig Ferguson (Tropicana, July 8); pop/rock star and hottie Sheryl Crow (Borgata, July 8); Staind frontman Aaron Lewis’ great acoustic show (Borgata, July 9); Soundgarden reunion (Borgata, July 14); alr-rockers Interpol (Borgata, July 15); talk-show host and Conan back-stabber Jay Leno (Borgata, July 16); “Celebrity Apprentice” jackass Meat Loaf (Hilton, July 16); rapper and Eminem cohort Rihanna (Borgata, July 17); geek rocker Elvis Costello (Borgata, July 22); Food Network weekend at Bally’s, Harrah’s, Showboat and Caesars with Guy Fieri, Robert Irvine and others (July 29 to 31); blast to the past with New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys (Boardwalk Hall, July 29); up-and-coming alternative rockers The Decemberists (Borgata, July 29); nursery rhymer and comedian Andrew “Dice” Clay (Trop, July 30); dirty comedian and “Full House” star Bob Saget (Borgata, July 30); reel in the years with Steely Dan (Borgata, July 30); country rocker Melissa Etheridge (House of Blues, Aug. 5); pop superstar and TMZ fave Britney Spears (Boardwalk Hall, Aug. 6); ’90s rockers Stone Temple Pilots, if Scott Weiland makes it (Borgata, Aug. 6); ’80s metal mavens Cinderella (House of Blues, Aug. 12); blues rockers The J. 5 Places in A.C. to get F’d Up!
Sure, the beer – and other tasty beverages – will be flowing freely at the Dave Mathews Band Caravan, but here are 5 places to get blasted in Atlantic City outside of Bader Field.
Mountain Bar at Bally’s Wild Wild West – Basically every bar on the planet has some sort of happy hour, but Bally’s Wild Wild West’s Mountain Bar takes overindulging to a new extreme by offering a 24/7 Happy Hour. That’s right, folks, cheap-ass drinks no matter when you park your butt on that stool. Selected draft beers are 2 bucks, and for an extra greenback you can get select mixed drinks and shots. And don’t let the prices fool you! You don’t have to drink swill from some third-world country. Cruzan rum, Jim Beam whiskey and other middle-shelf brands are for the taking. Plus, you can saunter over the Main Stage and catch free, live bands Thursday to Sunday nights.
Page 18
www.AtlanticCityLive.net
Beach Bars – If three days of sitting on hot pavement, dirt and grass doesn’t satisfy your desire to party outside, much more comfortable, cool alternatives to get s--faced can be found right on the Boardwalk at the city’s three beach bars: Sammy Hagar’s Beach Bar & Grill at Bally’s, Trump Plaza’s Bikini Beach Bar and The Hilton Beach Bar. The former two bars offer ocean views, while the Hilton’s jives with the Boardwalk crowd. All three have other things in common, though, including plenty of food, frozen drinks, cold beer and hot waitresses wearing as little as possible. Although not technically a beach bar, another great outdoor drinking spot is The Deck at the new Golden Nugget in the marina district.
Spring, 2011
Irish Pub – Coming to Atlantic City and not drinking in the Irish Pub is like sacrilege. So whether you’re Irish or Russian, all are welcome at this quaint, traditional Irish bar that has plenty of Guinness and some of the cheapest food you will find in the city. If the $3.25 corned beef special or $1.95 cheeseburger doesn’t sound like grand choices to soak up the suds in your belly, this may not be the joint for you. With nearly 40 years of specialization in getting people good and hammered, the Irish Pub is open 24 hours a day, offers live music on Thursdays and is exactly the type of watering hole you should find yourself in at about 4 a.m. You may even see a guy who looks like a leprechaun sitting across the bar from you. Seriously. The Irish Pub is located at St. James Place at the Boardwalk. Call 609-344-9063. Ducktown Tavern – Another cool, inexpensive, popularwith-the-locals pub is the Ducktown, aptly named because it is located in the Ducktown section of A.C. While it has great food – check out the DT Wings, burgers and even breakfast served from 5 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – the reason to go to the Ducktown is to get sloshed. Happy hour is offered not once, but three times on weekdays: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. By the way, that early-morning drinking fest is offered on weekends, too. Go during Phillies and Yankees games and $2.50 beers are offered along with $1 dogs. Craziness. But good craziness. The Ducktown Tavern is located at 2400 Atlantic Ave. Call 609-449-1212. Firewaters – A craft beer drinker’s wet dream, Firewaters offers more than 50 beers on tap plus another 100 or so in bottles. Yes, you can get your Coors Light and Buds here, but if you’re a beer connoisseur, why not indulge in beers that are not only delicious, but wittily named, like Weyerbacher’s Slam Dunkel and Blithering Idiot, Stone’s Arrogant Bastard Ale and Rogue Dead Guy. Beer novices beware: Some of these brews have alcohol percentages well above 10 percent, meaning you can get f---ed up in a fast and furious manner. So, please, drink responsibly. Firewaters is located inside the Tropicana. Call 609-344-6699. Spring, 2011
