A few weeks ago I received a call from an old friend with a new idea. That friend was Matt Griffith, the publisher of Jersey Shore Family, and certainly one of the best Dads I know. To my delight, he was working on a project he thought I’d be interested in.. a publication specifically for families living at the Jersey Shore. As the mother of three beach-loving, flip-flop wearin’ kids, and a long time Jersey Shore resident this idea truly spoke to my heart. I couldn’t wait to get started and as I began sketching out ideas for the first issue I became totally focused on what a great place the Jersey Shore is to raise a family. Now, I’ve lived here for just under 20 years, and I’ve spent almost every summer of my life “Down the Shore,” so I think I’m fairly well educated when it comes to raising kids in this area. I know the best beaches, parks, camps, day cares and consignment shops. I know when to get my beach badges and when tickets are half-price (and which ones don’t expire!) I know which bug sprays work on green-heads and what to use for ticks. Just ask me where to get the best pizza, water ice or taffy; or which restaurants encourage kids to color on tables. I was sure I knew everything a mom needs to know when raising kids at the shore. . . Was I wrong! I am constantly discovering new things, new places, and new stuff for families with kids to do, and I can’t wait to share them all with you! Join us each month as we take a look inside family-life at the shore, and share with each other information and ideas to help us raise healthy, happy, Jersey Shore kids!

Dear Readers, Welcome to Jersey Shore Family!

I guess my wife and I have always been the adventurous types. Not jumping out of airplanes adventurous, but we’re always ready to take on a challenge. When we decided to start our family, we did it with gusto. We quickly had 4 children in 5 years and have really enjoyed the challenges and joys that come with parenting.

To be honest, we’re transplants to the Jersey Shore. We moved our family here almost seven years ago and quickly-fell in love with the area. The Jersey Shore’s never ending bounty of fun things to do, including long days on the beach, heading over to the boards on a warm summer night for pizza, fries and ice cream (just like vacation even though you have to work the next day), going to the park, riding the bike trails, shopping, eating out, exploring, taking in a show, fishing, boating, kayaking and so much more made it the perfect place to watch our children grow. The funny thing was we always knew about all this stuff but when we’d find ourselves with a free Saturday afternoon, we’d often scramble trying to figure out what to do. It was this last minute scramble that lead us to follow our dream of combining our love of family with our love of raising our kids at the Jersey Shore and create a handy resource for parents, a guide to all of the fun, educational and entertaining things to do for families. We certainly hope you enjoy the fruits of our labor and since we’re new at this, please feel free to give us your thoughts, suggestions, criticisms and more. Share with us your ideas on a perfect Jersey Shore family day (photos, too). Send us events to include in the calendar. We want this to be your publication. Tell your friends about Jersey Shore Family and when you can, be sure to tell our advertisers that you saw their ad here. If you haven’t done so yet, join our Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/jerseyshorefamily). We’re still working on the website and hope to have that up and running soon so stay tuned. Thanks for picking up Jersey Shore Family and using it. We’re thrilled to include you as part of the family! Yours,
Matt Griffith

It’s the thought that counts By Sherrii Brentari
Make this Mother’s Day special with gifts from the heart
My mother always told me, “It doesn’t matter what you get me... It’s the thought that counts.” Now, many, many years later–as a mother myself–I totally agree with that statement... But when the “thought” doesn’t come until the day before Mother’s Day, I can’t say it holds the same sentiment. The best Mother’s Day gifts aren’t the most expensive, or elaborate, but the ones that have a little thought and planning behind them. This Mother’s Day, don’t wait until the last minute. Take some time to think about what Mom would really appreciate. Maybe it’s a hand-made gift from the kids (my personal favorite); or a customized piece of jewelry; or a bouquet of her favorite flowers. Do you even know what your mom’s favorite flowers are? Not all mother’s like flowers, believe it or not. It’s not a requirement for motherhood. Take a few minutes to actually get to know your mom and what makes her happy. You might be surprised... She may not really prefer expensive lilies or roses. A simple bunch of daisies may be the perfect pick for her. Remember, it’s the thought of the love and appreciation for your mother that counts; not what you thought she wanted.

The end of the school year is just around the corner and you’re running out of time to decide where to send the kids for the summer. Believe it or not, many families begin enrolling their kids in February for summer camp. There are so many choices out there it’s not always easy to choose the best camp for your kids. Whether you’re considering a half day camp, full day camp, or even an overnight camp, the options are staggering. Here are a few tips to help you begin choosing a summer camp.
For summer camp listings check out the Jersey Shore Family Directory on pages 28 and 29 For detailed information on summer camps visit www.atlanticshorefamily.com

Safety
Summer camps often provide activities and options for kids that could potentially be dangerous. And even in spite of most camps having extremely high standards and safety precautions, “kids will be kids” and there will be accidents. But check with the camp you are considering and make sure that they meet all the American Camping Association (ACA) standards for all of the recreation options. Also, make sure you know where your child will be taken in the event of an emergency. Double check that the hospital or emergency room accepts your insurance and program the address into your GPS. Better safe than sorry, if tragedy strikes you want to be able to get to you child side as soon as possible.
May 2010
Evaluate Activities
Unfortunately, some camps only have limited activities and can only keep kids entertained for 3 or 4 days. Others have so much going on campers will never get try all activities. Make sure you choose a camp that has not only plenty of options, but options that your child will enjoy. No matter how specific or obscure your child’s interests are, chances are there is a camp out there for them.
Staff-to-Camper Ratio
All camps have a State mandated minimum staff-to-camper based on specific criteria. You don’t need to actually find out what the ratio is for each camp you consider, just simply ask the question. Any good camp staff worth their salt will know the answer for their camp off the top of their head, if they don’t, chances are that’s not a camp that takes the mandate seriously. Keep looking.

Water safety and swim lessons a must for Jersey Shore families
A By Sherrii Brentari
lthough it’s not quite time to dig the beach chairs out of the garage and wipe the cob-webs of the sand buckets, it’s not too early to begin planning for summer. Between picking out a good summer camp and planning the family vacation, most people don’t think much about how quickly a fun trip to the beach or pool can turn into near tragedy. Atlantic County is surrounded by so much water there are obvious safety issues for families to consider. For people between the ages of 5 and 24, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death. One of the best things you can do as a parent is to introduce your kids to the water early. Use bath time to familiarize them with floating and being underwater. Swimming is one of the most important skills children can have, and it’s never too early to start thinking about water safety and teaching your children to swim. Swimming experts are divided on the best age at which a child should start taking lessons. Some suggest that swim lessons during the first year do little to actually teach any measurable skills; however, others promote lessons from as early as three months of age. Researchers have documented that in addition to safety benefits, the stimulating effect of child-paced infant/ toddler swimming lessons has the potential to
18
increase intelligence, concentration, alertness, and perceptual abilities. Improvement in social, emotional and physical development of children who begin swimming at an early age has also been reported. According to the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP), babies who have early aquatic training are not only at less risk of drowning but benefit from superior physical coordination, social confidence and mental development. There are many infant and toddler swim programs available for Atlantic County residents. When choosing a program to enroll your child in, make sure you are comfortable with the instructor and the environment. Select the teacher carefully. The session should be enjoyable. Instructors who do not specialize in infant lessons may not have the skills, ability, and experience necessary to create a safe and comfortable environment for your child and in some cases can do more harm than good. Robin Taylor, owner of the Brigantine Aquatic Center, developed an infant water survival class several years ago and is an expert in teaching swimming techniques and water safety to all ages. “NO ONE can be ‘drown proof,’” states Robin. “No one.” “But, you can be taught the skills needed to be safer in and around the water, as well as techniques to be a more proficient swimmer, which will give you a life time of aquatic enjoyment.”
Family Jersey Shore
May 2010
The Brigantine Aquatic Center offers various types of memberships to the young and old alike. However, memberships are not the driving force. Teaching swimming is. “Since opening in 2001we have taught over 4000 infants, toddlers and school age children,” said Robin. “Swimming is a life skill, unlike many of the other activities children are involved in today. Dance, soccer, football, cheer-leading are all fun things to do and are great sports, but we
usually don’t take those skills into adulthood. You do, however, swim your whole life.” In addition to a variety of 10 week sessions that run throughout the year, a new “Get Ready For Summer” mini swim session starts May 25th. The Brigantine Aquatic Center is conveniently open 7 days a week and is located 1 mile from the bridge, at 32nd and Bayshore Ave. Lessons are taught morning, afternoon, and evening throughout the week as well as on weekends. Top 10 Signs Your Child Needs Glasses
I
f your child is struggling at school, an undetected vision problem may be to blame. A child who is unable to see the blackboard clearly or has a hard time focusing on the work at his desk will soon become frustrated. Many children’s vision problems go undetected during school vision screenings, so parents and teachers should watch for the following signs that may signal vision problems. If you notice any of these signs in your child, schedule an appointment for a full eye exam. The doctor may determine that your child is nearsighted or farsighted, vision problems that are easily corrected.
1. Squinting
Squinting is much like looking through a pinhole. Peeking through a small opening reduces the size of the blurred image on the back of the retina. This temporarily improves vision and could be a sign of your child compensating for poor vision.
2. Sitting too close to the television Sitting very close to the television or lowering the head while reading is often a sign of nearsightedness. Nearsighted people generally have clear vision at a close range and poor vision at a distance. Moving closer to an object brings the object to their clear focal point and makes the image larger.
20
3.Losing place while reading
Skipping lines or losing your place while reading can be a sign of a vision problem. Often, astigmatism or an eye muscle problem such as strabismus is to blame.
4. Covering one eye to read or watch television
A child who covers one eye to read is simply shutting the eye with the poorer vision off so that it does not interfere with their vision. An uncorrected vision problem in one eye can increase a child’s risk of developing amblyopia. Covering one eye can also be a sign of double vision caused by strabismus or a more serious medical problem, such as a cataract.
5. Excessive tearing
Children often have lag ophthalmus, a condition which causes the eyes to dry out at night because the eyelids do not completely close while sleeping. This can cause excessive tearing during the day that interferes with good vision.
6. Frequent headaches
Uncorrected farsighted children often have frontal headaches or brow aches. This is a result of the child attempting to compensate by exerting extra effort to clear their blurry vision.
Family Jersey Shore

8. Finger pointing while reading
Finger pointing while reading is not always a bad sign. Children often point when learning to read independently. However, it can be sign of a vision problem such as amblyopia which causes a ‘crowding’ phenomenon making letters or words appear very close to other letters or words, making them difficult to recognize.
9. Light sensitivity
Children with exotropia, occasionally squint one eye when exposed to bright sunlight and may be interpreted as light sensitivity.
10. Rubbing eyes
7. Tilting the head
Tilting the head can be a sign of an eye muscle imbalance or strabismus. A child may have double vision when looking down or in a certain direction. Tilting the head may minimize the double vision to a more manageable level.
Rubbing the eyes is a sign of eye fatigue and can be a sign of all types of vision problems. Medical conditions such as allergic conjunctivitis can also cause vision problems. For more information or to schedule an appointment to have your child’s eyes checked call Dr. Scott Fuerman and Dr. Larry Fuerman at 609-641-2330.

The park attractions include live shows, parades, activity centers, opportunities to meet Sesame Street characters, plenty of places to eat and shop, and all sorts of rides - both dry and wet. Cookie Monster is a popular guy, we found it nearly impossible to
actually catch him for a photo, but the other characters available for photos. The park offer several different snackbars, restaurants, and food carts. Coolers and picnic lunches are not allowed in the park, but a picnic area is available for guests outside the park, located adjacent to the Preferred Parking Lot. JSF TIPS: • Definitely consider brown bagging it, the food
costs are even more than you might expect for small portions and long lines.
• The water rides are by far the best rides in the park. Be sure to bring a swimsuit, swim shoes, and swim diapers for the wet rides, AND at least one change of clothing!
• Pay extra to park in the preferred lot - it’s worth
the expense, don’t start your day off with a long uncomfortable walk. You’ll be on your feet all day, don’t add the half mile walk to economy parking to your journey.

Where’s the Party?
Does Your Child Have A Summer Birthday?
C
hildren born in the summer tend to have more party options because they can have their parties indoors or outdoors. However, summer birthday boys and girls are often at a disadvantage because they don’t see their school friends all summer long–hence, no way to invite them to celebrate. By planing ahead and scheduling your child’s party at a great destination you can guarantee there will be enough little heads at the table to fill all your son or daughter’s party hats. Throwing a summer birthday party for your child doesn’t have to be a hassle. You can let the party experts at Morey’s Piers plan the entire day. Morey’s has a variety of packages to choose from featuring admission to: Raging Waters and/or Ocean Oasis Waterparks, Amusements on all 3 of Morey’s Piers, or you can combine the waterparks and piers and party all-day (and night)! Every birthday party package includes: • A pizza party at Jumbos – with jumbo sized pizzas and a selection of sodas • A chocolate or vanilla personalized birthday cake • A special visit from one of Morey’s Piers two friendly mascots: Sunny C. Gull and Curley Fry! • Electronic Invitations to e-mail to your guests • Each party guest receives a goody bag to take home • 2 Parking Complimentary Parking Vouchers! • The Guest of Honor Receives a Special Birthday Gift!

It’s a Date!
Bright Lights/Big City
T
Make a date with AC
he concept of having a “Date Night” to reconnect with your significant other has been a popular one for the past few years. Some couples swear by it. Some couples see no need for it. And the rest of us are still trying to figure out how to accomplish it. The purpose of “Date Night” is to establish some balance in your life. To take some time away from the everyday stress of the kids, the house, the bills, work, and just enjoy spending some time with your partner. It doesn’t have to be expensive, or elaborate. Just find something you both enjoy, call a baby sitter, drop the kids off at the grandparent’s house, and call it a date. One of the great things about living at the Jersey Shore is the fact that there is always something to do. There are so many great shows, restaurants, events, casinos, beaches, and boardwalks you could do something different every night of the week and still not even scratch the surface of everything this area has to offer. If you’re not the “planning” type, just hop in the car and head towards Atlantic City. When was the last time you took a night time stroll down the boards or took a ride in a rolling chair? The lights, the crisp sea air, the sound of the waves-- all very romantic. A great place to start your date night tradition. Go window shopping or take some time to pick out anniversary gifts for each other. AC Outlets–The Walk features well-known retail outlets; The Pier Shops at Caesars features exclusive retail shops like Gucci, Armani, and Tiffany, while The Quarter at Tropicana offers over 30 unique shops. Check out some live entertainment at the House of Blues at the Showboat, or boogie down at Boogie Nights in Resorts.
26
Enjoy a free concert on the Boardwalk, or take in a show at one of the many casinos. This month Air Supply, Diana Ross, Barenaked Ladies, and Hall and Oats are in town. Visit www.atlanticcitynj.com for more details on upcoming shows. If you’re feeling lucky, pop into any of the casinos and try your luck at your favorite game. Nothing is more romantic than hitting the jackpot. Comedy nights are always a popular date night choice. Check out The Comedy Stop Cafe & Cabaret at The Tropicana or The Borgata Comedy Club. If you’re looking for something hot and steamy try slipping into The Pool at Harrahs. Bikini-clad waitresses will serve up top shelf drinks at pool side tables, private cabanas, and you can even reserve a private hot tub. How’s that for a hot date idea? Do you have some great date night ideas of your own? Please share them with us. Visit us on facebook or send your ideas to sbrentari@JerseyShoreFamily.com
