message from the publisher Matt Griffith, Publisher

So far, this has been a perfect Jersey Shore Summer. Nice and sunny with lots of great beach days and fun activities to do with the family. As we squeeze the last days of summer out of August, it’s hard not to notice all the school supplies flooding the store shelves and, eventually, we’re going to have to think about sending our kids back to school. Sherrii developed a nice piece about preparing for Back to School that you may want to check out on page 16. Of course, I prefer not to think about back to school until after Labor Day which usually leaves us one or two frantic days of preparation with my kids complaining because all the “cool school supplies” are gone. August still offers so much to see and do before the end of summer (are you keeping up with your checklist from our June issue?). Be sure to make room in your life for the famous Atlantic City Airshow (schedule on page 8) and remember to do some of the touristy stuff like climbing the Absecon Lighthouse (August 7 is National Lighthouse Day), going out on a boat ride with the Atlantic City Cruises, checking out the Atlantic City Aquarium and making a visit to Lucy the Elephant (cool new dining option details on page 26). If you need to get out of the sun or if the weather isn’t cooperating with your plans, be sure to check out the open bounce times at Bounce U (schedule and discount coupon on page 5) or the Jersey Shore Children’s Museum (with discount coupon on page 31). Let’s all agree not to get too freaked out about going back to school but, rather, let us enjoy these last few days of summer. Hope to see you on the beach! Yours,

Matt Griffith Jersey Shore

editor’s note Sherrii Brentari, Editor Back to school? Already? As always, the summer is just whizzing by without the courtesy of giving everyone a warning that it’s soon to fade away. And again, as always, I haven’t done half of things I wanted to do with my kids this year. Remember the Summer Checklist we ran in the June issue? I promised myself my family would do at least half of the things on the list. To date, I think we’ve only done 14 of the 58 things on the list. (I even took my kids to the Forth of July fireworks, but I couldn’t find sparklers!) And, I did do some fun stuff that wasn’t on the list so I’m still a good mommy, right? One of the best things about working with Matt on Jersey Shore Family is the constant reminder of how important it is to spend time with my kids, and how fast time flies. I’m a bit of a workaholic. (I publish two other publications, run a marketing company, and host 3 websites.) I also have the pleasure of working from home most of the time, and I’m home with the kids every day. The upside? I don’t have to worry about daycare anymore, and I’m with my kids all the time. The downside? I never have enough time to get everything done, and I’m with my kids all the time. I end up taking our time for granted and sometimes forgetting what’s important in life. Sound familiar? Another thing I love about Jersey Shore Family is that it really is the best source for information and tips on raising kids. The “What’s Up Doc” feature gives me great ideas, and I always learn something new about caring for my kids’ health. It also gave me the opportunity to visit Dr. Calabro, something I wouldn’t have considered in the past. (What an eye-opener that was! He’s amazing—everyone should take their kids to see him at least once!) Product features like last month’s “A Day at the

Beach” forces me to think outside of the box, and find new products that are great for the whole family. “It’s a Date” reminds me how important it is to spend time with my husband, which is probably the most difficult thing to do with a busy schedule and the first thing to get neglected. Check out this month’s date-night hot spot, Bella Luna on page 26. “Where’s the Party” is a great source for parents with little kids. How many parties can you have at Chucky Cheese, right? I don’t even have to mention “Are We There Yet” or the Events section. What valuable resources.. right? Jersey Shore Family publisher, Matt and his wife Jeanne actually put the events list together every month, which gives me a whole new perspective on life at the Jersey Shore. Previously, it wouldn’t even occur to me to do a lot of the things they include in the calendar. (They have a totally different type of family, kind of a mix between the Brady Bunch and the Huxtibles.) This month, while gathering the information for the “Back to School” guide, I asked my 12 year old son to think of things he needed for school. I’m so glad I did, because I wouldn’t have thought of a lot of the things he came up with. Overall, my goal for this issue is to try to help other parents get into the “back-to-school” mind set, and encourage everyone to get out there and make the best of what’s left of the summer. I hope I did my job. Please let us know how we did and if you haven’t already joined our Facebook page, check it out. It’s a great place to exchange information with other parents, get to know your neighbors, and become acquainted with Matt. He’s the driving force behind the Facebook page, and he’s a wealth of information.

The Basics Crayons

As summer comes to an end, the backto-school bug fills the air. It’s best to start gathering supplies early to take advantage of the discounts and large selections. How many times have you rushed out looking for a “Dora” lunch box only find all the “good” lunch boxes are gone and just a few “Transformer” or “Barney” boxes are left on the almost empty shelves. Schools now make it a bit easier for parents to buy the essentials by posting lists of needed school supplies on their websites. Make sure you check the school website or call the school for a list of required supplies before you hit the stores.

Every pre-school child needs them. Many parents dread them. Your kids creations are great, but not on the walls! Make sure you try Crayola’s Washable Crayons®. They really do wash off almost any surface, and they only cost a bit more at $4.99 for a 16 pack.

Pencils

There are as many different types of pencils as there are types of kids. A recent trend in middle-school are lead pencils (some teachers prefer the thin lines). They vary in style, thickness, and price, so make sure you know what your child prefers before you stock up. PaperMate has a whole line of lead pens including the Comfortmate Ultra Pencil which is pretty much middle of the road when it comes to lead pencils. Prices start at $3.99 Another great choice are the Mini size Bic Funatic Mini Mechanical Pencils. Fun colors, less expensive and disposable, they appeals to a younger audience. Prices start at $4.85

for an 8 pack.

Erasers

There are a rainbow of erasers out there. Different styles, colors, and even scents. Check out the Foohy Scented Eraser Caps, a favorite with the little guys and girls. Prices start at $4.99 available on www.Amazon.com

Tape

Who doesn’t need a little tape? And teachers don’t always like to share! Perfect for back-backs, Baumgartens’ Mini Tape Dispenser w/4 Tape Rolls. Prices start at $4.99 available on www.Amazon.com

Emotional or behavioral help for children

By David Huang, MD

Children’s emotional and behavioral health disorders can lead to problems in school, family conflicts, drug abuse, violence, and even suicide. Nightmares, trouble concentrating, poor school performance, drug or alcohol use and withdrawing from friends and family are signs a child might need help. A child’s emotional well-being impacts the whole family. Whether your child is physically ill or experiencing emotional or behavioral issues, a key to his or her well-being is having a good relationship with your pediatrician and following up with a specialist when he or she recommends it. Whether we are evaluating children in our child and adolescent outpatient or acute partial hospitalization program or working with teens at ABH’s Teen Centers at Atlantic City and Oakcrest High Schools, AtlantiCare Behavioral Health is committed to meeting children’s unique needs. AtlantiCare Behavioral Health cares for children and adolescents ages three to 18, because every child’s mental health is important. Your child might need help if he or she is experiencing the following: • persistently sad and hopeless • angry most of the time • frequently crying • expressing feelings of worthless or guilt

22

• often anxious or worried • overreacting • extremely fearful • overly concerned about physical appearance

This intensive acute setting is designed specifically for children. The team includes child psychiatrists, a doctor of psychology, a registered nurse, Master’s-level therapists and clinical case managers. Children are referred to the program through physicians and mental healthcare professionals.

What’s up doc?

Meet the Wellness Family Klingert Family Chiropractic At what age should a parent consider taking their child to see a chiropractor? Some parents might be surprised by the answer. Klingert Family Chiropractic Center treats patients of all ages... sometimes even before they are born. Your immediate reaction might be to assume a child would not benefit from chiropractic care, or that they may be frightened of having their spine adjusted. If you’d like to see first hand what a typical visit to Klingert’s office is like, I invite you to visit their website and see for yourself how much children enjoy the visits and hear first hand from their parents about how much chiropractic have helped improve their child’s health and well being. When you visit the site, you will see Dr. Casey and Dr. Rich adjusting patients of all shapes and sizes. Patients and their parents can’t say enough about the doctors or about how much Chiropractic has improved their health and quality of life.

Dr. Casey holds patient baby Canyon after a percussor treatment. Canyon who is just under 1 year old, obviously enjoys the treatment and virtually purrs throughout the entire exam.

Make an appointment today for a complimentary exam or for more information, call 609-653-1100 for Egg Harbor Township or 609-909-9355 for Mays Landing, or visit www.klingertwellness.com.

Dr. Ali’s adjustments help baby Jack be healthy and happy.

Dr. Rich’s son Ricky, injured himself in a snow boarding accident that ripped his shoulder out of it’s socket and landed him in the emergency room. Dr. Rich treats Ricky with both laser treatments and a magnetic pulse instruments that allows him to adjust the bones without using a lot of pressure. “After my first laser session I noticed more range of movement,” says Ricky. “And the treatments are completely painless.”

Our family has faced many health obstacles including severe food allergies, autism, immune deficiencies and multiple chemical sensitivities, and after exhausting traditional medicine, we have found undeniable success with chiropractic care. For us, it is now a lifestyle, and our family chooses the care at the Klingert Family Chiropractic Center, it is family oriented, even for our young family, and their experience, knowledge, genuine compassion, and attention to detail has given our family the ability to get healthy and stay healthy. ~Michelle and Scott

it’s a date!

A Date With Lucy at

Bella Luna

by Sherrii Brentari Ocean Front Al Fresco Dining with a view... A view of Lucy AND a view of the Atlantic. What’s better than that? If the wind in your hair, the scent of the ocean, and the warm glow of tiki-torches is your idea of the perfect setting for the perfect date, then call the babysitter and make your way to the new Bella Luna Restaurant in Margate. Bella Luna’s Executive Chef Jason Tell describes the ambiance of the open air eatery as “Sexy, Romantic, and Fun.” He’s also quick to point out that ‘Bella Luna’ is Italian for ‘beautiful moon.’ The Italian influence doesn’t stop with the name, but flows through the menu touching lightly on almost every dish. A self-taught Chef of over 12 years, Jason has created an eclectic menu featuring a medley of surf, turf, and pasta favorites prepared with a local flair using locally grown vegetables and Jersey caught seafood whenever possible. He adds a sense of whimsy to classic dishes like Grilled Seasoned Chicken by pairing it with a peanut mango salsa and serving it up with fresh Jersey grilled corn on the cob.

26

Bella Luna has all the qualities that epitomize romantic summertime dining including a tropical ambiance and live music and dancing. Every Thursday local singer Suzie Neustadter and the Groove perform live and the lower deck offers enough room for several couples to slow dance into the night. I couldn’t imagine a more romantic setting for an intimate dinner, until Jason mentioned the special, private dining in Lucy’s “howdah” riding basket. Amazing! Perhaps the most beautiful thing about Bella Luna is that all proceeds go towards the preservation of Lucy the Elephant, a National Historic Landmark. Executive Director of the Save Lucy Foundation Richard Helfant stresses that the local appeal and focus of the restaurant is all about Lucy. Although the I Love Lucy Cafe that previously occupied the space was named for the beloved pachyderm none of its proceeds benefited the Save Lucy Foundation. Dinner is served Wednesday through Sunday beginning at 5pm and reservations are recommended. For a complete menu visit: www.lucytheelephant.org 9200 Atlantic Ave., Margate. 609.822.7268

Beat theHeat

Why is it that every summer seems hotter than the summer before? Blame it on global warming, blame it on getting older—whatever the reason, it’s just plain hot and getting hotter all the time. As we suffer through this blistering summer it’s good to know the relief of the beach is within reach. But you can’t go to the beach every day. You can always take your little ones to a nearby water-parks. Make a day of it, bring a cooler, and enjoy watching your kids have what seems like the best time of their lives. Maybe you’ll even join in the fun. When is the last time you shot down a 20 foot water slide? If you can’t remember, maybe it’s been too long. Not everyone can find the money, or the time, to devote a whole day to the slippery bliss of a water-park. How about creating your own backyard splash zone? Check out a few water toys at the top of our list and let us know if you have any favorites of your own.
