message from the publisher Matt Griffith, Publisher

Dear Friends, At my house, we love the fall almost as much as we love the summer. Pumpkin carving, bonfires, apple-picking, hayrides, fall sports, and long walks in the woods are just a short list of things we love doing in the fall. Since this is our first “Fall” issue, we had the tough job of combining two completely unrelated topics that we think are important to families at the Jersey Shore… Fall activities and Breast Cancer Awareness. Sure this is the season for corn mazes, hayrides and pumpkin picking but October is also Breast Cancer Awareness month. Unfortunately, Jeanne and I have been impacted with breast cancer as we’ve watched friends and family both go through the challenges of this disease and the impact it has had on their families. Please take some time this month to consider those who have been affected by breast cancer and do something in their honor; we’ve found some breast cancer related events and have designated them with a Breast Cancer Ribbon to make them easy for you to find. And, if you haven’t yet, please talk to your doctor about your risks and the precautions you can be taking now to prevent or address breast cancer in your life. As far as fall related activities are concerned, we’ve gathered a cornucopia of fun things to do with your families. I had the pleasure of driving to various farms to check out their fall offerings in preparation for this issue. I saw lots of cool corn mazes, beautiful pumpkins and the makings of some pretty scary hayrides. Use this issue as your guide and try to maximize all that our area has to offer. Celebrating Jonah’s 8th birthday Yours,

Matt Griffith

Hayrides, and Mazes, and Pumpkins . . .

Oh My!

It’s time to celebrate fall at the Jersey Shore and this area has everything you need for some autumn family fun. Galloway and Egg Harbor Township are home to all types of fall favorites including pumpkin patches, Hayrides and the ever popular Corn Maze. Many local farms open up their fields for pumpkin picking or, if you’re not excited about getting your boots dirty there are plenty of roadside stands offering the season’s finest pumpkins and fall produce. Hayrides are great for kids of all ages and are a perfect fit for seasonal fun for the whole family. If you’re a little more gutsy, and are prepared to get your pants scared off, you might want to leave the little guys home and check out The Cornfield of Terror at R&J Farm in Galloway or the Terror in the Junkyard Haunted Hayride hosted by the Scullville Volunteer Fire Company at the Fleming’s Auto Parts Junk Yard in Egg Harbor Township. Here’s a quick list of some of the best Jersey Shore Fall activities around. ________________________ Continued on page 8

by sherrii brentari Galloway mom, Nicole, wasn’t sure what to do for her daughter Josephine’s upcoming 2nd birthday. She wanted to do something different to make the day special, but she didn’t have a lot of time for planning and preparation. “I decided to have Josephine’s party at the Children’s Museum because it was so easy,” says Nicole. “You just show up with a cake, juice-boxes, favors, and kids and they take care of the rest—they even gather the presents and bag them up for you to take home!” A party at a museum? What a great idea. Most Jersey Shore parents know about the Children’s Museum at The Shore Mall, but not everyone know what “goes on in there.” The museum offers a hands-on, interactive setting for children to explore, learn, and play with 16 exhibits including: the Pediatric ER, TV

Newsroom, Construction Zone, Car Factory, Country Store, Post Office, Dentist Office, NBA Basket Ball Court and Fire Department. “It’s really cute watching the kids explore each area. They could occupy themselves for hours,” says Nicole. Parents can participate in the role-play or just sit back and watch. Parties are pleasantly calm, absent is all the party craze and noise and parents actually have the opportunity to talk to each other and enjoy a stress-free day with their kids. Parties are the perfect length for young children and include 1 hour of exploration time before everyone gathers in the party room for cake and snacks. Birthday party packages are available Saturday, Sunday, and weekday afternoons and include use of the party room, gift certificate for the birthday child, full access to the exhibits, post-card invitations, a party hostess, set-up and clean up. Just bring the cake, juice boxes, and take part in the fun. “For me the best part was NO CLEAN UP!” said Nicole. “For Josie I think there was just so much for her to explore. And she had a great time with her friends!” The Jersey Shore Children’s Museum was founded and organized by two local teachers

in 1997. The non-profit facility is dedicated to creating an environment for children that stimulates curiosity, creativity, imagination and learning through interactive play and exploration. The doors opened in January, 1998, at its original location on Fire Road in EHT where Copier Plus exists today, and they successfully moved to The Shore Mall in 2003. Museum Director, Sue Gunther and staff are constantly creating new activities including story time, shows, and season related crafts and projects. The exhibits do not change much, but she explains that the repetition and consistency of the experience is good for young children. They love the security of returning time and time again to their favorite areas. A child will bring a new mind-set to

each return visit and repetition is an essential learning tool in childhood. “Kids really love this museum, because imagination and role play is the name of the game! says Sue. Birthday parties help fund the museum and give parents a safe, clean and fun place for a child’s party! Class trips are welcome, and the museum offers family memberships and grandparent packages. Admission prices can be obtained by contacting the museum. Hours are Monday thru Saturday 10a.m.-5p.m. and Sunday 12p.m.-5p.m. For more information about educational programming or complete party package details please call the museum 609-645-7741 or visit www.ShoreMall.com and follow the link to Jersey Shore Children’s Museum.

Talking with your child about breast cancer By Linnea Brown, BA, RN, OCN, Breast Health Coordinator

AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute,

Linnea Brown

a Fox Chase Cancer Center Partner

Whether you’re a parent, a grandparent, an aunt or uncle or an honorary aunt or uncle, telling the children in your life that your or a loved one has breast cancer – or any cancer - is something you didn’t anticipate having to do. Sharing the news with a child or teen will seem frightening, but once you do, you’ll see he or she can help in your healing experience. Sharing the news Be open with your child. He or she knows when something is wrong. Trying to shelter the child by not telling him or her can break down trust. Talk with your child or children as early as you can. They need to hear it from you, in a reassuring way – not from someone else or by overhearing a conversation when you think they’re tucked asleep. You’ll know when it’s time to talk. Whether you do it one-on-one or with a spouse or other loved one beside you, trust yourself.

Facing tough questions Children who hear the word “cancer” – like adults – often assume the worst. If caught early breast cancer and many other cancers are treatable. If a child asks, “Will Mom die?” answer honestly. A reassuring response could be, “Mom is doing all the right things. She’s going to the doctor, taking her medicine and taking care of herself.” Explain that treatment could change the way Grandmom looks – that she might lose her hair. Call or visit your local librarian to learn about age-appropriate books that explain cancer for children. If appropriate, bring your child or children to meet your care team. Physicians, nurses, social workers and other members of the team can help you, help the child in your life learn and understand what to expect through your treatment and recovery.

Share age-appropriate information. Explain that you have cancer – using the word cancer if your child is old enough to understand what that is. Tell your child many people are helping you, your loved one or friend get better.

Helping them cope Reassure your child or children that it’s okay to cry. Tell them, “Dad and I cry, too.” But also tell them it’s okay – and that you want them - to be happy and to enjoy things they like doing.

In addition to talking with your child, call his or her teachers to let them know if you or a loved one faces a breast cancer diagnosis. Your child – like you – will need the emotional support of others in his or her life. Encourage your child or children to talk with you, friends, teachers and others you and they trust. Encourage your child to play – by drawing, participating in sports, drama or other home, neighborhood or school activities. Remind him or her that life is going on – it’s just going to be a little different for a while. If Aunt Jenny wants to wear a scarf or hat, enlist your child in finding – or making the perfect one. For a few dollars you can buy a baseball hat and decorate it with buttons, beads or words. You can do it with Aunt Jenny or as a surprise for her. Your high school senior might want to give her his baseball cap from the last season. She’d be proud to wear it.

Celebrate your survivorship Mark your treatment milestones with children. Let them draw a happy face or other symbol on the calendar the day of your last treatment. Spend time together – whether you read a book quietly or visit a favorite park – focusing on your child will help him or her realize he or she – and you – are okay. Linnea Brown, BA, RN, OCN, breast health coordinator, the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute, a Fox Chase Cancer Center Partner, helps patients, families and their loved ones facing a cancer diagnosis. For more information about how to talk with children about a breast cancer diagnosis, AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute programs and services, or other AtlantiCare programs and services, call the AtlantiCare Access Center at 1-888-569-1000 or visit www. atlanticare.org.

Cleaning for a Reason

Local business donates services to cancer patients

We all know how hard it is to do everyday chores when we’re sick. Cleaning the house is the last thing you want to worry about when you’re not feeling your best. Imagine how difficult those tasks are for someone suffering from cancer and undergoing cancer treatment. It can be overwhelming just to get out of bed and dressed, forget keeping the house clean. “Sometimes we all get sick,” said Sandy Bollo, owner of Shore Naturals, an eco-cleaning company located in Egg Harbor Township. “I have a hard time cleaning when I suffer from a migraine. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be going through cancer treatments, and still be a mom and have to take care of the house.” Fighting cancer is difficult enough, but living with it is even tougher - and that’s where the Cleaning for A Reason Foundation steps in. “We are donating hours and helping women maintain their homes while they undergo cancer treatment,” adds Sandy. “This is one less source of stress for them!” The nonprofit organization offers free, professional housecleaning and maid services to improve the lives of women undergoing treatment for cancer - any type of cancer. Deborah Sardone, the founder of Cleaning for a Reason (C4R), is a 25-year veteran of the housecleaning industry and the owner of Buckets & Bows Maid Service in Lewisville, TX. She established the organization in May of 2006 and, to date, the organization has helped 3,500 cancer patients with $500,000 worth of free maid service. “Debbie is an amazing woman,” said Sandy. “She teaches cleaning methods and helps professionals to provide a better service. Once I learned about the organization I signed my company up immediately. To offer services

26

through Cleaning for a Reason, the business must be established and they must carry the required insurance.” Shore Naturals has been a supporter of Cleaning for a Reason for over a year, and they donate as much time every month as possible. They have taken on 7 patient cases, and now have a waiting list for the services they offer through Cleaning for a Reason. “I really love doing this,” said Sandy. “It’s very rewarding and gives meaning to what we do. We all have to make a difference in our community.” For these women, having maid service while they are dealing with cancer is a wonderful gift. Cleaning for a Reason offers 4 months of cleaning services to recipients. Shore Naturals provide the service in Atlantic County, but they sometimes take on special cases outside of their area. One such case was Bayville’s Amy Paradise, a mother of twin boys and 2 time cancer patient. “Although she lived over an hour away, I had much in common with Amy,” said Sandy. “She couldn’t find a cleaning service near her and we are the same age, our children are the same age, and I decided I needed to help.” Amy was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 when she was just 35 years old. In February, 2010 cancer was again found after having a prophylactic mastectomy. “I know that I am doing well today because I wasn’t afraid to

“ask” for the help during my illness. Once I realized I could no longer do the things that I would normally be able to do, I learned to “let go” and take care of “me” instead. I have many people in my life I can never thank Sandy enough,” said Amy. “The service was a true blessing to myself and my family this past year! This gift allowed me not to worry about my basic house cleaning for a few months while I prepared and recovered from my 2nd mastectomy, reconstruction and complications.” “If you know someone undergoing cancer treatment who needs help, please sign up with C4R to receive our services,” said Sandy. “It may take a while to get your application through and receive the cleaning service. We truly hope you are not in need of C4R but, if you are, know that we will provide the best cleaning we can offer to make your home a clean and comfortable place to heal.” C4R is always looking for professionals to volunteer. If you know of a cleaning company that may be interested in joining the cause, please spread the word. You may be able to help women fighting cancer in your local area. AtlantiCare’s Seventh Annual Breast Health Signature Event to feature NBC Today’s Hoda Kotb AtlantiCare Women’s Health & Wellness will host its seventh annual Breast Health Signature Event October 21 at the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center Hotel, Atlantic City. The event, part of AtlantiCare’s observation of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, will feature a presentation by awardwinning broadcast journalist and breast cancer survivor Hoda Kotb, co-host of the fourth hour of NBC’s Today. The evening will include dinner, door prizes, giveaways, chair massages, makeup demonstrations and AtlantiCare’s “I Will Survive” art exhibit. Breast cancer and gynecological cancer survivors will receive a special gift.

About Hoda Kotb

Diagnosed in March 2007 with breast cancer, Kotb shared her story on Today in October 2007 and has been a part of several initiatives to raise awareness about the disease. She began hosting the 10 a.m. hour of Today when it debuted in September 2007.“The AtlantiCare Women’s Health & Wellness Breast Health Signature event gives us an opportunity to educate the community about prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer,” said Robyn Boniewicz, program director, AtlantiCare Women’s and Children’s Services. “We’re pleased Hoda Kotb will share her experience as we celebrate survivors and recognize the courage of all those who face breast and gynecological cancer,” said Boniewicz. About AtlantiCare’s “I Will Survive” exhibit AtlantiCare’s “I Will Survive” exhibit debuted at AtlantiCare’s 2007 Breast Health Signature Event. It features works created

28

by cancer survivors. AtlantiCare’s Arts Committee, which includes representatives of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts; the Noyes Museum of Art and the South Jersey Cultural Alliance, will consider artwork in twodimensional mediums. “The Breast Health Signature Event is inspiring and informative,” said Linnea Brown, RN, Breast Health coordinator, AtlantiCare. “The ‘I Will Survive Exhibit’ is a powerful way for those affected by cancer to share their story.”

AtlantiCare’s Breast Health Program

The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons, has granted AtlantiCare’s Breast Health Program, a service of the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute, a Fox Chase Cancer Center Partner, a three-year/Full accreditation. AtlantiCare is among less than 200 programs across the country to earn this designation. AtlantiCare’s Breast Health Program focuses on providing a coordinated approach to breast health for women, men and their families. The team uses the most advanced technology, including digital mammography, to detect breast cancer. Linnea Brown, AtlantiCare Breast Health coordinator, helps breast cancer patients and their families navigate care. AtlantiCare offers a Breast Cancer Support Group and other educational programs. To register for the event, or for more information about AtlantiCare’s Breast Health Program or other AtlantiCare services, call the AtlantiCare Access Center at 1-888-569-1000 or visit www.atlanticare.org.
