SCATTERING SEEDS OF KINDNESS...

Galloway Sisters Share Baskets of Hope By: Mari D Dattolo Teaching our kids to become part of a caring community begins before they even start school. Brittany Purdy, now seventeen, and her sister Amanda, thirteen, learned at an early age to have compassion for others when the highlight of their holiday season became ‘adopting’ disadvantaged children. The Atlantic County chapter of “Everyone’s Children” shares the needs and (wants) of less fortunate families that the Purdy Girls would then shop for. After a couple of outfits, socks, underwear and a favorite toy or game later, a special book always rounded out the gifts. What started as a family tradition nine years ago gave rise to the sisters initiating their own drive for area children. As Brittany became more independent in high school, she wanted to engage her friends in her endeavor to Make A Difference in a similar community effort. She and five friends collected Easter Basket supplies – baskets, grass, candy, toys etc... by reaching out to family, friends, neighbors

16

and school staff as well as postings on their Facebook pages. Brittany’s goal was to provide 50 baskets. She put a collection box on her porch and emptied it each time she got home. The committee of friends managed to collect and assemble 88 baskets for the 2015 Easter Season. This 2016 Season they surpassed that goal with 96 Baskets for children of their community! In preparation for the Easter 2017 campaign, the Purdy sisters took advantage of post holiday sales and have 97 Baskets ready to begin their crusade next Spring! Although Brittany and her Friends will be graduating Absegami High School this year, Amanda who goes to Galloway Township Middle School hopes to pick up where her sister leaves off. She has already talked to her Class Advisor about getting Student Council involved to help collect items next year, as well as having her own committee of friends to help spearhead it. In addition to these holiday drives, Brittany and Amanda have also collected new backpacks and ‘back to school’ supplies for their area’s children. It seems that these sisters have already learned some of Life’s Most Valuable Lessons!

Keep you and your family safe from the sun this summer! Helpful ideas from AtlantiCare experts TOP IT OFF —Shade your face from the sun with a visor, hat or ball cap, and try to stay indoors or in the shade between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when skin-damaging rays are strongest.

KEEP IT MOIST — Applying a daily facial moisturizer, preferably one with an SPF of 15 or higher, and moisturizing after you towel off from a shower are great ways to maintain the appearance of your skin.

RUB IT IN — Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more to all exposed skin. Sunscreen products labeled “broad spectrum” must protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, and after swimming or sweaty outdoor activities such as running or beach volleyball.

FEED IT WELL — A diet high in vitamins C and A, magnesium, and zinc can provide your skin with important nutrients to stay healthy. In addition, a lifestyle that incorporates regular physical activity increases circulation, which can improve the skin’s appearance. BOOK K

reviews FOR AGES 10-14

Courage for Beginners by Karen Harrington, (Little, Brown and Company, 2014, $17.00) As if seventh grade wasn’t hard enough, Mysti Murphy has to deal with an agoraphobic mother, a father who fell out of a tree and is now in the hospital, and a “best friend” Anibal Gomez, who wants Mysti to pretend she doesn’t know him-at least while they are at school. Mysti knows her name is never found on keychains and pencils, and that would be okay if she was a character in a book. She really would like to be fictional so she could deal with all the frustrating things that are happening to her life. She narrates bits of her life such as “Here is a girl preparing to enter seventh grade with a dented dad, no obvious friends, no new school shoes, and the horrific realization that she’d only shaved one leg.” Or “Here is a girl listening to songs that speak to her soul and staying up too late texting when her parental unit shouts to shut it down.” Mysti knows that change is coming for us all whether we want it to or not and not just daylight saving time change or when the cable company took Animal Planet off channel 130 and changed it a cooking channel. She is trying to move to the new year ready to change her story in the book of her life: A sort of courageous girl person who has a chic haircut, the ability to buy food for her family, and two good friends.

FOR AGES 12 TO 18

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

Six of Crows is a story of a group of six that decide to pull off what most consider an impossible heist. Set in the fantasy world that Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy created, first timers to her world-building can start this book with ease without reading her other series. While it starts off slow, getting past the first few chapters guarantee a novel that will have you unable to put it down until you find out just how it’ll end. It has a little bit of everything from thrilling action sequences, quick-witted banter, and a little romance that builds naturally. The crowning glory of this novel is the character development. Juggling six very different characters and giving them all the appropriate time for development could be difficult for most writers, but Bardugo does it with ease. Contrasting personalities keep the dialogue humorous, and the anti-heroes tendency to do things, not for the good of the world, but based on their own moral compass keep the reader wondering what will happen next. Everyone will connect with at least one character and the rotating view-points gives a little more insight into their pasts and how they came to be a part of such an unconventional group.
