Get Ready for Summer!
I think I was probably 7 years old before I realized the Jersey Shore wasn’t the only place in the world with a beach. To me, “Going to the Beach” meant piling into the car at dawn and making the over 3 hour trip from Pennsylvania with my family. In a hot, cramped, over-packed yellow Subaru station wagon I listened to my parents argue about directions, only stopping the car once and always at the Vincentown Diner. I remember sticking my head out the window to listen for the seagulls, and cheering when we reached “THE Bridge.” These were the yearly rituals I grew up with and waited for all year long. My children won’t have those memories. My kids are lucky enough to call the Jersey Shore home, but the excitment of the first days of summer still fill the car when we make our first journey to the beach. They live the life I dreamed of as a kid. This is my favorite time of year. A time to look ahead at the upcoming season and start planning our summer. Every year there are places I return to for my all-time favorites (All-U-Can eat hard-shell crabs at Crabby’s comes to mind) and there is always something new to surprise me.. like how much fun a 3 year old can have at a U-Pick farm! We’ve already started the season by making a trip to New Jersey’s only drive-in.. and guess what? They have great food! It’s the only place I know of where you can get fried asparagus, pop-corn, funnel cakes, chocolate covered strawberries, or a stirfry.. to eat in your car no less.. What fun! (See story on page 24) So, join us as we check out all the fun stuff included in this special “Season Preview” edition of Jersey Shore Family. We invite you to try out some of the oldies and some of the newbie’s.. but most of all, to remind everyone take time to enjoy everything the Jersey Shore has to offer. So get your calendars out and get ready for another amazing season at the Jersey Shore! All the best,
Sher i Brentari

We’d love to hear your thoughts, too. Tell us what you think at www.facebook.com/jerseyshorefamily Say you saw it in Jersey Shore Family!
June 2010
Dear Readers; As a Jersey Shore dad, I think June is my favorite month of the year. First, June brings the long awaited end of school. After months of helping, cajoling and threatening the kids to do their homework; both my wife and I are looking forward to the summer break just as much as the kids. June brings Father’s Day. The only gift I want is some sunshine, a few hours in a beach chair and some time with Jeanne and the kids. Finally, we get to officially declare the arrival of summer and, after the winter and spring we’ve had, I think we’re all looking forward to summer. As you start planning your summer, be sure to check out the Jersey Shore Family Checklist that starts on page 16. We had fun creating this list and would love to hear your thoughts on your “must do” things this summer. Also, I want to express a quick word of gratitude to all of our friends (new and old), our family and our advertisers. Your words of encouragement and excitement about our first issue and new endeavor have been truly appreciated. We’re excited that you like Jersey Shore Family and, of course, we love hearing it. Check out what people are saying on page 6. We’ll continue to work hard to bring you a publication you can use. Yours,

Father’s Day Dilemma
Bill Cosby once said, “Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope.”
W
hy is it so difficult to find the perfect gift for Dad? Probably because, often they buy themselves just about anything they need. Most people would never consider buying underwear or socks for their mother, and yet those “gifts” often top the list of most popular Father’s Day presents. Ask any dad to let you into his top dresser drawer and you’re likely to find a stash of ugly ties, socks, underwear and endless bottles of after-shave and cologne they have received over the years from well meaning family. Although fathers everywhere do enjoy getting gifts, most men do not have that little wish list tucked away somewhere. If they want it, they go and get it. Because of this selfsufficient nature of dads, a popular Father’s Day choice is a gift card for Dad’s favorite home improvement store, resturaunt, or auto parts store. The gift card is a pretty safe one size fits all type of gift. But, if your hoping for something a little more personal, most men are not as “difficult” as they seem; most dads would appreciate a little thought and effort behind the gift. You know what kind of man your favorite male really is, so keep that in mind when planning your gift choice. Some dads may really love tools, but unless they enjoy doing the chores on the “honeydo” list, it really is the same as if he bought you a new mop or washing machine. Nice, but... If you’re lucky enough to have a dad who has a hobby, you’re all set. Hunters and fishermen can never get enough gear. Model train buffs get excited about a set of miniature houses or a car to add to the collection. Sports fans love gear with their favorite team’s logo. Collectors... well, of course, collectibles. Whatever the hobby is, there is a whole host of gifts to match. If the man of the house enjoys nothing more than laying on the couch and watching TV, you may not have the budget for a big screen TV, but that’s not your only option. TV related gifts could be videos or DVDs of his favorite movies or sports events. A music loving dad will appreciate a collection of his favorite songs burned onto a CD or a tape, depending on how technically gifted you are. The most important thing is to have fun coming up with different ideas. Remember, it’s the thought that counts. If you enjoy the gifting, he will enjoy the gift.

jersey esh r f Get pickin’! It’s Pick-Your-Own Fruit Season and, here in the “Garden State,” there’s plenty to pick. If you don’t have a green thumb, or just don’t have the time to invest in cultivating a garden like Michelle Obama, you can still enjoy the freshest fruit of the season. Just grab some buckets, pack up the kids, and visit a local U-Pick farm. If you’re not familiar with U-Pick or PickYour-Own (PYO) farms, you’re missing out. Not only can you enjoy the best fruit fresh off the vine, but the kids will have a blast and, if they aren’t careful, they will probably learn a little along the way. If fresh fruit without chemicals or preservatives commonly found in grocery store produce and the promise of a fun day with the family aren’t enough to get you excited, u-pick farms offer their goods at highly discounted prices. Not convinced? Store bought organic strawberries average $4.50 per pound. Pick up a pound of organically grown, fresh strawberries at a PYO farm, and you can expect to pay around $1.00 per pound. Besides getting down and dirty with the kids, you may be in for some surprises. Many farms offer treats, tours, crafts, and rides for the kids, and there are often road side produce stands offering pre-picked goodies at reasonable prices and fresh baked pies.

What’s up doc?
Chiropractic Care By Sherrii Brentari Every parent knows bumps and bruises are a normal part of daily life for kids. What do we do? We put bandaids on scrapes. We put ice on bumps and bruises. We give Tylenol for headaches. We help our child’s body do what it does best–heal itself. Although the bumps and bruises do eventually fade, the damage the child’s body endures is not always evident on the outside. In fact, sometimes there may be no symptoms at all, or the symptoms a child experiences may be attributed to other things. “Children don’t always have the ability to communicate pain,” says Dr. David Calabro of Calabro Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Linwood. If the child has been experiencing pain from a very early age, they probably don’t even know what they are experiencing is not normal. If parents are lucky, their child’s body will send out signals that something is wrong inside. Signs of an internal change or misalignment may include: • Sleeping problems • Behavior problems • Allergies • Asthma • Ear infections • Colic • Headaches
• Fever • Stomach ache • Sore throat • ADHD • Hyperactivity • Frequent colds • Bed-wetting.
Often, parents and pediatricians alike forget that symptoms are warning signals.
22
for K i d s !
They think the symptoms are the actual problems and treat them without going to the possible root cause -- a subluxations or partial dislocation of a bone or joint. “The nervous system is so delicate,” says Calabro. “It’s job is to send a mesage to the body. If your nervous system isn’t functioning properly, it’s like static on a phone line. The messages your body receives aren’t clear.” In many cases, a child may be functioning just fine with no actual “symptoms.” Children are very good at adjusting and adapting to fluctuating conditions and may quickly compensate for any changes in their bodies’ abilities. “The body is self healing and self regulating,” explains Calabro. “Our bodies regulate themselves constantly even though we’re not aware it’s going on.” There doesn’t even have to be a problem for Chriopractic to be beneficial. The whole philosphy of Chiropractic is to help people lead a healthier life through the stimulation of their body’s own innate healing capabilities. “Chiropractic has nothing to do with pain,” says Calabro. “Its focus is an increase in the overall health and well being of the patient.” It’s all about helping our children and our families to reach their full potential. There is no doubt that quality of life will be improved by removing the constant stress of a misalignment or the exhaustion resulting in disrupted sleep.

“My daughter Angela suffers from a form of Epilepsy that causes seizures. Prior to coming to Dr. Dave, she was on medication and had seizures several times a month. We tired to wean her from the medication a few times, but it didn’t work. I decided to take her to Dr. Dave. The results were amazing, not only is my daughter off all medication and seizure free for over 2 years, but my entire family has not had to go to a medical doctor for any illness for the past 2 years.” -Sally Miller, Egg Harbor Township
“We live our lives through our nervous system,” says Calabro. “Since the brain and spinal cord control all body functions (tissues, organs, cells, immune system, muscles, etc), any irritation to it can prevent your body from healing and regulating properly. Health and wellness are so much more than just not feeling pain.” If a child has no obvious phyical problem or hasn’t suffered from a significant injury, it can be difficult for parents to recognize when a child has spinal subluxations. It’s safe to say that no one other than a chiropractor, highly trained in evaluating the spine, can
determine if the child has a problem. Just as it is difficult anyone other than a dentist to determine if a child has any cavities. Both cases take the skills of a trained specialist to perform a thorough evaluation. It’s important for young children to be evaluated by a professional as early as possible to assure they develop properly into thier teenage years. “Stress and iritation on the nervous system left untreated will interfear with a child’s ability to function and grow at the appropriate level,” says Calabro. According to the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. no one is too young to benefit from a Chiropractic evaluation. In fact, some people have their child adjusted in the delivery room, and many people who have home births invite their chiropractor to the birth. “I believe anyone with a spine should be checked out,” says Calabro. “The benefits can be endless. It’s about improved quality of life and allowing children to reach their maximum potential.”

Are We There Yet?
New Jersey’s only drive-in theater offers family fun at family friendly prices Did you know a family of 4 can take in a double feature, get dinner, dessert, and popcorn for under just $50? All it takes is a little planning, a few pillows, and a short drive and your family can enjoy the latest box office favorites under the stars. Add to that a great meal at discount prices and you’ve got an average night at Vineland’s Delsea Drive-In. In the 50’s and 60’s The Drive-In Movie Theater was the perfect blend of America’s pastimes: movies and cars. As TVs and VCRs became more popular Drive-In’s started to dwindle. The Delsea Drive-In was owned and operated by the Budco chain in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. The theatre was actually closed down in 1987 and remained dormant for over a decade until it was reopened in 2004 under new management. Since then the 700 car Drive-In has made a huge come-back. With years of renovations and improvements, and a snack bar that rivals many restaurants in variety and quality, today’s Delsea is a great desitnation for families and movie lovers of all ages.
24
Even with improvements in today’s Drive-In Theaters, you still don’t get the same sound quality found in a traditional theater. The lack of high tech sound effects is often a good thing for families with small children. Sometimes, the booming theater sounds are overwhelming for wee-little ears. However, whatever Drive-In’s lack in acustical quality they make up for in reduced audio annoyance. No one can hear your yammering kids and you don’t have to listen to someone elses 3 year old asking “What happened?” “Who’s that?” “Can I go to the bathroom?” “When are we going home?” Another sometimes overlooked perk is the double-feature aspect of the Drive-In. You may at first think a double feature is pushing the limits of your children’s attention span. However, again with a little planning, a few pillows, and a lot of luck the kids may just sleep through the second feature, which gives the parents a rare chance to actually watch a movie together without having to pay a babysitter for the privilege.

JSF TIPS: • Arrive early!
Large vehicles are not permitted to park in the first 5 rows, but if you arrive late you may get stuck behind a largebut-not-too-large SUV that completely blocks your view of the screen from all angles.
• Bring stadium chairs. No matter how roomy
and comfortable your ride is, you’ll want to have the option of getting out and enjoying the fresh air.
• Forget about bringing your own snacks.
Although the $7.00 outside food permit is reasonable, you’ll be missing out on the amazing snack bar. Great prices, a huge selection, and better food than you’ll find at most diners.

it’s a date!
Don’t Let Date Night Break the Bank! A night alone with your significant other can help maintain some “we time in a relationship. The big thing lately is “date night, but that can get expensive! With the added cost of paying a babysitter it can almost break the bank. If you feel you can’t afford a fancy $50 dinner that doesn’t mean the idea of date night has to be toss out the window! Get creative, built in baby sitters are sometimes found in unexpected places. (Think grandparents, other couples, parents of friends from school.) If the weather is nice there are a ton of affordable–if not totally free–things to do. Head to the beach or a park with a bottle of wine and just talk to each other. When was the last time you actually watched a sunset? On the way back home stop for ice cream or coffee. Take time to sit, talk and reconnect over ice cream or coffee. If you were lucky enough to find a free sitter, now you have a few bucks to spend. Take in a movie, or save a few dollars and head to the Delsea Drive-In. Find a quiet restaurant before the movie starts and share a salad. The boardwalk is always a great place to visit. Hold hands while you stroll the boards, share some boardwalk fries, have your palms read. Give yourself permission to be silly, and remember what it was like when you first started dating. Date night is about spending time together not about spending money. Finding ways to reconnect doesn’t have to come at a huge expense. Having fun making the plans and being creative can make the whole thing that much more enjoyable for the both of you.
