PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Welcome to Our Premiere Edition By Louis Mascolo I am very excited to present to you our new sports publication, Jersey Sporting Life. It had a previous incarnation a few years ago as South Jersey Sporting Life. I was publishing another paper at the time and realized I didn’t have the staff to do both. Now, we’re staffed up and ready to go with this newer, sharper version. I came upon this idea while standing in the aisle at the supermarket (I know shopping is a traditionally female chore, but excuse me, I see a lot of guys checking out the price of Cheerios.) As I looked over the racks filled with women’s magazines, I realized there was nothing for men. Oh, there was the occasional Newsweek or Time, when you could find them, but little else. I mean, I’ll pick up a Cosmo if there’s nothing else, but that’s mainly to find out what women think good sex is or to look at the scantily-clad, gorgeous women. Apparently, women like cheesecake too. That’s when I decided to do a male oriented sports magazine. Funny thing though, I got a helluva lot of heat from the ladies when I told them it was for a male audience. “What makes you think women aren’t into sports,” they scolded. “You’re such a chauvinist.” I did have to point out the supermarket magazine rack incident and those publications lack of consideration for the male reader…and incidentally, what do you call a female chauvinist. Seems that term should work both ways. In any case, ironically we have four female columnists writing for us, and it’s very true that women’s sports have taken off in America. So of course, we welcome our lady, sport-enthusiast counterparts. Please be advised, however, we like our edgy, male approach, and that’s what we’ll be delivering. No frilly concessions on this one. You won’t find any articles here on, “How to keep a successful marriage going for forty years while you grow old.” Secondly, I think we are all tired of the constant drumming of bad news that becomes overwhelming—financial crisis, massive oil spills, bought-off politicians, greedy CEOs, rising health costs, sinking home prices. As Ferris says, “sometimes you just have to say WTF.” Forget the “nabobs of negativism.” Take a break. This mag is about sports, entertainment and fun with some useful information thrown in. This is definitely something you can take to the water closet library and spent a few enjoyable, selfish minutes alone, away from the kids, reading about what we all love best—sports, fishing, beer, poker and babes. We will also have an online edition at our website, sportinglifenj. com, where we will have extended galleries of our monthly pinup girls. If you have a business that caters to men and/or sports enthusiasts, you should get on in here. We’ll get you noticed. Give us a call: 800-444-0015, Ext. 120. Please feel free to send your comments and suggestions for articles and photo spreads to me, editor@sportinglifenj.com. We look forward to bringing you our magazine for, hopefully, a long time to come. 2010 Jersey Sporting Life

Philly Phevor by Cameron Wilson Pathetic Laker Fans & Not Panicking Over the Phillies…Yet! Let’s get something perfectly clear: I cannot stand L.A. I do not think there has ever been a more fake sports city than Los Angeles. They show up late, leave early and only cheer when it’s fashionable too. Specifically Lakers fans. Earlier this season, the team tried to hand out white T-shirts, to give a “white out” effect in the arena. Only a handful put them on, mostly because it would “clash with their outfits”. I hate L.A. Late in a game during the NBA Finals, Boston was on the line, with maybe two minutes to go. The Lakers were only down by three points and it was not loud at ALL! No noise, no distractions, nothing. I’m sorry, but if the opponent is on the free throw line with just minutes to go, you had better be screaming your head off making it hard for that ball to go in. That’s why it’s called “Home Court Advantage”. And did you know that there was a riot in L.A. after the Lakers won? Oh yeah! Chic Lakers fans took to the streets burning cars, looting shops. If that was PHILLY, it would have been headline news. BUT NO, this was L.A. where the Angles won a World Series, the Ducks won Stanley Cup, and the Lakers won 5 NBA championships all since 2000! This has become Old Hat for that city but they went nuts anyway and no one said boo about it. Just really gets me going. Alright I think that I am done for now, I’m off my

Page 6

www.SportingLifeNj.com

soapbox. If I slip back in my Lakers hate, you will have to forgive me. And one more thing, Kobe is NOT the greatest Lakers of all time. Magic, Wilt, Kareem THEN Kobe. I might even put Jerry West before him, depending on my mood. Now back to the Phillies….what can I say…about the Phillies. I don’t really know where to start. Is Jimmy really that important to the cohesiveness, the flow, the success of our team? I remember last year there was the running joke that the Phillies only win when Jimmy scores a run. It has become increasingly clear that Jimmy is what makes the world go round…in south Philly at least. What the Phillies have gone through in the past month, without Jimmy, I don’t even know if I would call it a slump. It was more like hibernation. They were not even sniffing the ball. I would like to blame it on the back to back knuckleballers instead of no Jimmy but in all seriousness, they were not hitting even before that. For the first time in almost two full seasons they have been out of first for more than just a game. Last year everyone was hitting the snot off the ball, but no one could pitch. So they went after Cliff Lee and then of course this year Halladay. This year it could not be more different. We have had decent and even reliable pitching, but we can’t score. And in turn, it puts even more pressure on our pitchers not to make mistakes because they are not getting the run support. The saying goes that it’s always darkest before dawn and I have to say it was looking pretty bleak heading in the series with the Yanks. I hate the Yankees by the way. I’m just sayin’. But the bats, ladies and gentlemen are starting to wake up. Howard is stroking the ball long, Werth is cutting down on his swings, Victorino is taking pitches, and even Rauuuul is putting the ball in play. We took two of three from the Yanks, SHOULD have taken two of three from the Twins…Lidge still has some issues he has to work out. Am I panicking? Not just yet. I have the panic button in my sights, took the cover off…but I am not ready yet to mash on the button. Talk to me at the end of interleague play… Jersey Sporting Life 2010

The Cup Run Iseth Over 0:03--0:02--0:01 … S*#@ !! Game 6 kicked you in the teeth like a February day in Jacksonville! Was that Donavon McNabb in Goal for us that night? What is this feeling we have had for soooo long? (2008 Phillies excluded .. Go Phils!! ) I wasn’t the hockey fan I am now when the Flyers won last. I figured they would always win—WRONG—12 year-olds are morons, or at least I bought it. I wanted to be rational and accept that we never should have been in the Cup Finals this year against the Chicago Blackhawks. But I am a diehard Philly Phan and cannot accept that logic. If you finally get to the place where you are trying to get to every #%@&*^ year, then realize you may not get here again !! Win now, baby... win...win!!! We lost … 10 years since we lost in 1985--then lost in 1987. 10 more years til the EPIC collapse of the “Legion of Doom” in 1997 with a 4-0 SWEEP by Detroit. Then13 years to feel like this?

Of course, I realize that no one could possibly hurt more than the guys in that locker room. We fans don’t do S*** but buy tix, or watch at home, or buy jerseys, hats, etc… These guys played so over their heads and so hard. Doing everything “THEY” all said they weren’t capable of doing. Page 8

Welcome back to the Operation Sports (O.S.) fight fans. UFC 118* has been officially scheduled for later this summer up in Beantown. Make your plans to hit Boston on Saturday August 28th for a “mad wicked” event. Pain-heads will be entertained for sure by LEGEND, Randy Couture, taking on boxing, James Toney. Toney makes his mixed martial arts debut and this will be a brawl of striker versus grappler in this highly anticipated matchup. The main event of the night in this writers mind is the re-match of Edgar Penn. In UFC 112 back in April, Frankie Edgar defeated B.J. Penn and shocked us all by taking the Lightweight title from Penn. Frankie “The Answer” Edgar hails from Summit, NJ (fighting out of Toms River, NJ ) with a 12-1 professional record. He will try to make lightning strike twice at TD Garden in Boston in EDGAR vs PENN 2! In a battle to step up as the next top, lightweight contender, Rousimar Palhares, tries to stop Nate Marquardt

vs. B.J. Penn in his quest to move up the UFC ranks. These two, Brazilian, jiu-jitsu, black belts will, no doubt, be on the highlights reel. Gray Maynard will have his hands & feet full with the likes of local Boston boy, Kenny Florian—a crowd favorite to say the least. “Without a doubt, August 28th will be one of the highlights of my career. I’m thrilled to bring the UFC to Boston for the very first time in our history, “said Dana White, UFC President. “Boston is one the world’s great fight towns. And we are gonna bring it with the rematch between BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar, and the octagon-debut of boxing legend, James Toney vs. one of the greatest UFC heavyweights of all-time, Randy Couture.” Tix go on sale Friday June 25th at 10am EDT . They can be purchased at TICKETMASTER or the TD Garden Box Office. Ticket prices range from $ 75 - $ 600. UFC 118 is also available on Pay-Per-View at 10 pm on 8-28-10 on InDemand, DirecTV, etc., for $ 44.99 in Standard and HD broadcasts. UFC Fight Club members go to www.ufcfightclub. com for special internet pricing orders.

frankie edgar NOTE: In closing I would be remiss not to mention the possible final appearance of Chuck Liddell—at least in the UFC that is. Liddell has been a MMA staple for 12 years now. He has amassed a 21-8 record. He is tied with Tito Ortiz with 22 UFC fights as the most fights todate with UFC. Sadly, since May 26th, 2007, Liddell has a 1-5 fight record. On June 12th, 2010 (UFC 115), Liddell was KO’d by Rich Franklin at 4:55 in the 1st round in Vancouver, Canada. Is it time to move on? Can he still compete with these fighters who seem to adapt better and are younger? Try this: ONE: Stop going for the kill strike TWO: Randy Couture adapted and so does Liddell to stay viable in the octagon. THREE: Failure to Evolve as a fighter and adapt will get you hurt inside the mind & body and the wallet. UFC Prez, Dana White said two hours after UFC 115 that Liddell would never fight for UFC again. If that goes away, bad days follow for a man that this is all he knows. That sunset is approaching Chuck … Till then... Lets Get It On!

Mike Jones Looking to Make a Statement against Irving Garcia Welterweight sensation Mike “MJ” Jones (21-0) is unquestionably amongst boxing’s best up and coming fighters. At 21-0, Jones, a gifted boxer puncher, dominated virtually every fight he’s been in, stopping all but four of his opponents. Since entering the paid ranks in 2005, the Philadelphia based phenom holds impressive victories over respected opponents such as Israel “Pito” Cardona, Germaine Sanders, Henry Bruseles and Hector Munoz. But something crucially important was evading him. Although he’s been backed by Hall of Fame promoter Russell Peltz since day one, the hard hitting twenty seven year old never received a showcase bout on a premium cable network. Simply put, the select few promotional firms controlling the majority of TV dates were simply unwilling to match their top young stallions against Jones, robbing him of a chance to fight on HBO or Showtime. That was until now. On July 9 at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, Jones will have his chance to shine when he battles rugged Irving Garcia as part of a doubleheader slated to air on Showtime’s ShoBox: The New Generation. With a 17-4-3 (8 KO’s) ledger, the Puerto Rico native is a solid pro and widely considered Jones’ toughest opponent to date. “I am expecting a good fight,” said the soft spoken Jones. “He is a good boxer and is battle tested, but I am going to see where his heart is by making it a dog fight, so we will see if he is willing to stand there and fight.” Garcia owns a win over once promising prospect Chris “The Mechanic” Smith, fought to a 2010 Jersey Sporting Life

draw with fringe world champion Yuriy Nuzhnenko and most recently found himself on the wrong end of a fourth round stoppage against unbeaten Luis Carlos Abregu in one of 2009’s most memorable bouts. As displayed against the hard hitting Abregu, whom he twice decked before getting viciously stopped, Garcia has no problem fighting fire with fire. “Irving has a good counter right hand and is a good boxer,” said Jones. “My game plan is to go out there, box and counter, so I feel I am going to do very well.” A Jones victory will most likely land him a match up with Antwone Smith, who takes on Lanardo Tyner in the televised co-feature.

Galloway Township’s Troy Maxwell Gunning for Revenge!

Galloway based Super Middleweight “Trouble” Troy Maxwell had no amateur bouts and is admittedly in the developmental stage of bettering his craft. Most, if not all, fighters who literally learn on the job are matched against opponents making their pro debut or with poor records. One of those supposed “opponents”, 1-6-1 Rafael Jastrzebski of Atlantic City, was a man Maxwell faced in his third pro bout. Maxwell was favored to win while gaining experience against a rugged but supposedly safe opponent. Things didn’t go his way. Maxwell, 2-1 (1 KO), had a difficult time adjusting to the awkward Pole, dropping a four round split decision on May 22. “I had no amateur background so his style was something I never saw,” said Maxwell, who meets Jastrzebski in a rematch as part

of the Jones-Garcia undercard. “He fought off the ropes a lot and it was hard to adjust to.” To get himself ready for the rematch, Maxwell has sparred with unconventional fighters so sweet revenge may very well become a satisfying reality. “In boxing, a loss is a big deal”, said Maxwell, who also has three pro mixed martial arts fights and trains under the watchful of boxing great Virgil Hill. “The defeat has been bothering me since fight night and I promise a knockout come July 9.”

Livin’ on the Edge! by Rick Cahall Highs and Lows Like anything else in life, we experience ups & downs in the Xtreme sports community. This year so far is no exception. To date, 424 climbers have ascended Everest in 2010, but none may be as exciting as 13 year-old, Jordan Romero, as he climbed to the top of Mt. Everest on May 22nd 2010. He’s youngest climber to ever achieve the task. He is not new at this as he topped Mt Kilimanjaro at age 9! His resume` reads as such: Africa—Kilimanjaro – July 22, 2006 Australia—Kosciuszko – April, 2007 Europe/Russia—Elbrus – July 11, 2007 South America—Aconcagua – December 30, 2007 North America—Denali – June 18, 2008 Oceana—Carstensz Pyramid – September 1, 2009 Asia – Mt. Everest – May 22, 2010 His next target is in the coldest climate in the world, Antarctica; destination-Mt. Vinson Massif. His team consists of father Paul Romero, Karen Lundgren stepmom , and three Sherpas. “We are ready to stand at the base of the mountain - mind, body and soul taking in the sight, feeling the wind in our faces and breathing in the experience,“ said Jordan. “We’ve trained our minds for the difficulties and emotions that the mountain will give to us. We’ve trained our bodies for the physical challenges that the mountain will share. We’ve opened our souls to the mountain, the history, the culture and the rituals that surround the climb. We are a team and together we will find our synergy and step together toward the summit.“ Good Luck young man...there is no doubt you will achieve that goal. Be safe & Godspeed. Page 10

Monsters As with every high there is a low. The Xtreme world lost one of its finest this year. Wingsuit flying’s modern pioneer, Geoffrey Robson, lost his young life in flight on April 12th in Boschendal, near Stellenbosch, South Africa in the Groot Drakenstein mountain range.

Tom Tucker 10lb flounder Brigantine

Geoffrey Robson was a qualified mechanical engineer and mathematician who happened to love to wingsuit fly. His death and final flight was recorded on his helmet-mounted video camera and shows graphically why this is such a seriously extreme sport. Robson completed his Master’s degree at the University of Stellenbosch, and was a PhD student at the ETH in Switzerland, where he conducted research on wingsuit flying. He considered himself lucky enough to be able to combine his interests in one study: aerodynamics and wingsuit flying and aimed to combine math and science to improve wingsuit flying. He had been studying wingsuit flight to unprecedented accuracy by using a highly sensitive instrument which measured 3D location by GPS and inertial measurement, flyer attitude and heading, altitude, and air pressure during many wingsuit base jumps. Robson was said to be the only person in the world who combined the scientific capacity for this kind of research with the ability to test it himself in the air. Robson was 31. Mid Summer Fishing In AC: Where’s The Ramps? Finally, the time of year we have all been waiting for is here Hot, Lazy Summer! The kids are out of school and summer vacations are in full swing. What better way to spend it than down at the shore soaking bait and hoping to catch the big one. There is no better place to do it than in the ocean, and bays surrounding Atlantic City. It doesn’t matter if you have a boat or not there many great possibilities for a great catch. However whether you do have a boat or not, doing a little homework in the planning stages and paying attention to details can greatly increase your fun level and your chances of bringing home dinner. The most important first step is to get the rules straight. “What rules?” you may ask. In today’s saltwater fishing world there are plenty! Find an issue of the NJ Fish & Wildlife Digest, Marine Issue and read it cover to cover. It’s available at almosy all bait and tackle shops in the state and also can be found on line by simply writing Fishing in New Jersey in your favorite search engine. To register (it is completely free) just go to www.countmyfish.noaa.gov and answer a few questions. You can print out a copy of your registration immediately and in a couple weeks you will receive a plastic card to carry with you; or call 1-888674-7411 and get a registration number over the phone. This is an important step to improve our saltwater fisheries for the future, so do not forget to register. Next, get the hooks in the water. If you’re lucky enough to have a trailer boat there is some great fishing to be had along the Jersey Shore. You should research boat ramps ahead of time because they are limited in the area. The only ramp in Atlantic City proper is on Albany Avenue adjacent to the now closed Bader Field airport. This ramp puts you right into the middle of Absecon Island and some great summer flounder fishing. The disadvantage—parking is limited and not the best place to leave expensive tow vehicles. 2010 Jersey Sporting Life

Most ramps are in the nearby communities surrounding Atlantic City. All the local ramps give access to back bay areas which makes for safe boating for any size boat. Just off Route 30 the Absecon Public Ramp (fee required) is on Faunce Landing Road and gives access to Atlantic City through the Absecon Creek and Absecon Channel. It’s only a short five-mile run to the Brigantine Bridge and the inlet; however, if you want to catch flounder or do some crabbing you don’t have to go nearly that far. Fat crabs are crawling all over the mouth of Absecon Creek and you don’t even have to leave the stake channel to get at the hungry flat fish. This is a fee ramp and annual passes can be purchased from Absecon Municipal Building daily passes can be bought at Absecon Bay Sportsman Center. Brigantine is just across the inlet from Atlantic City and has an excellent municipal ramp on Bay Shore Avenue and 6th Street which accesses Bonita Tideway. This is also a pay ramp but it puts you right in the middle of Brigantine and great fishing. It is also in the middle of some no wake areas so be courteous to docked boaters if you leave from here. On the South-end of the Island, Great Egg Harbor Bay, Inlet, and Lakes Bay there is exceptional fishing, but public access can be limited. Small boats can be launched on the dirt ramp at Ventnor’s Ski Beach if you are on the island. Several marinas on the Margate Bridge Road maintain private ramps, but your best access again is from the mainland side of the bays. Somers Point has a very good ramp at J.F. Kennedy Park and there are a couple smaller ramps along Bay Avenue. These are very close to the flounder grounds in the Great Egg Harbor Bay or you can run thru the inlet and out to the ocean. Another obscure ramp away from the crowds is at Seaview Avenue in Linwood. This ramp is best left to the smaller boats, but the short wait time is a big attraction. One of the newest and best ramps around

is on Lakes Bay at Pleasantville Municipal Yacht Basin. It is a long ride to the inlet and you must follow the marked channels exactly, but you have to run over miles of great fishing areas to get there and have excellent crabbing available right outside the basin so there is no need burn the gas to have some fun. I would like to invite you to stow some fishing tackle or crabbing gear on your next trip to the Gambling Coast and get outside and have some real fun doing what you really like to do, “Going Fishing”.

Jersey Five-O The Zen of Surfing Kasey Klemm is 31, oceanminded and has been surfing since the age of 6. She has been a serious surfer for the last 10 years traveling the world with her board. She surfs locally for Primal Surf in ESA, and in many other local events. Page 16

There’s something about surfing that only a surfer understands. It’s the kind of sport that doesn’t matter if you’re with ten of your best friends or all by yourself. On a beautiful morning, when the air is warm, the sun is shining, and the waves are head high and glassy, nothing else matters except you and your board. It’s when a surfer feels complete and full of life. It’s when their problems go away and they realize there is something greater. It’s when they feel at one with themselves and mother earth and that’s just the core of what surfing has to offer. This year was my first year out of that water in a long time and it is impossible to describe to you the change of heart I had after getting just one wave after eight long months. Usually, I spend my winters in Hawaii or California, but Baby Zoë kept us here this year. It didn’t take long after her birth however, to get back in the water, and the day I did, it was like I never left. Surfing is the sport that keeps on giving, with no two waves ever being quite the same. It is a life altering challenge with nothing but reward for those of us playing the game. When I started surfing, I was just a young girl with my dad. He would take me out tandem on his longboard and basically peel my fingers off the rails to make me stand up, and it’s funny, because I know that same day will come with Zoë in just a few years, and it makes me smile. It wasn’t until I moved to Hawaii, however, at the age of 21, that my real love for surfing developed. When the waves are perfect and the ocean so blue, it creates a love affair to even the most casual of surfers. It’s an experience so unique to everyone which makes it nearly impossible to describe, although if I had to, I might think it something like finding the pot of gold at the end of the most beautiful rainbow, yet at that moment being so content, that you just leave it there so that someone else might have the chance to experience the elation that you just stumbled upon yourself. Whether pulling into a barrel on a double over head wave in Hawaii, or cruising on a longboard in some knee high slappers in South Jersey, the overall feeling is without compare. If you haven’t tried it and have the chance, I would highly recommend it. It’s just one of those things that will take your mind off the world and leave you staring at the world in front of you, raw and uncut, and waiting impatiently and excitedly for just one more ride. Legislation filled with fallacious assumptions. The new law passed and signed in the last days of the Corzine administration in January 2010. The requirements of the new law: Registration, identification tags and insurance on all off-road vehicles. Increased financial penalties for illegal riding on public or private land. $250.00 first offense, $500.00 second offense and $1000.00 all subsequent violations. The law also authorizes the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to impound off-road vehicles until assessed fines are paid. I wasn’t crazy about any of this, since my husband and three sons ride...If somebody wants to register and tag our bikes, that’s a lot of coin, they better provide somewhere for us to ride! But— there is a catch in favor of us. The DEP must site three off-road-riding parks on state land. One each, in the northern, central and southern parts of New Jersey, and actually provide one, up and running, before the provisions of the bill can go into effect and be enforced. Now.... at first, I thought this part of the law was great news. Finally somewhere for the hundreds of thousands of off-road riders, to practice for races and legally ride for sport, all year long. But then— if you continue reading the bill, the carefully constructed web-of-deception, becomes all to clear: If the (DEP) within three years is unable to locate and utilize such site, then at the beginning of the fourth year, the newly increased fines will be reduced and revert back to the before-the-law status. What kind of crock is that? If nobody finds a place to construct an off-road riding park in three years, what then, the deals off? The law goes away? What are these— monopoly laws. There is $250,000 dollars earmarked and available to the (DEP) for motorized vehicle trails in the State of New Jersey through the federal Recreational Trails program run by the Department of Transportation for use in siting off-road vehicle parks.

Bentz Fallen Soldier Bike Run

Now listen to this garbage: This money is in jeopardy of being re-called by the Department of Transportation because New Jersey has been unable to find a way to use any of the accumulated motorized trail money. Wait..? What?? So the organizations put in charge of looking for suitable offroad riding sites are dragging their feet and as the sand in the hourglass slips away, the monies have to be reabsorbed? Let’s hope not. I understand that it is difficult to get local governments and tax payers to cooperate (they petition against off-road parks) in the ongoing search for an off-road vehicle park. The majority dislike dirt-tracks and ATV vehicles, stating that they do more damage than good, but I say if there were more than one legal places to ride like the recently closed NJORVP (New Jersey Off Road Vehicle Park) in Chatsworth N.J., it would generate tremendous revenue for local municipalities and would probably bring most illegal riding to a screeching halt. What do you think? Here are a couple of web sites you can read pertaining to offroad riding and the laws surrounding them here in New Jersey: www.buenavistatownship.org/atv.htm www.responsibletrails.org/New-Jersey Please e-mail your comments and questions to piazzax@verizon.net www.SportingLifeNj.com

Tua vs Barrett at the Trop On Saturday July 17th, Star Boxing returns to the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, NJ with a sizzling heavyweight showdown, when David Tua (513-1, 43 KO’s) squares off against and Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett (34-9, 20 KO’s) in what is expected to be an all-out war of heay-hitting, former world title challengers. “We had great success with our show at the Tropicana back in March and we are expecting an even greater event this summer featuring this can’t miss heavyweight showdown,” stated Joe DeGuardia, CEO of Star Boxing. “With David and Monte you have two heavyweights who both are going to leave everything they have in the ring. Both of these guys have very heavy hands, and will look to trade big shots from the moment that bell sounds to start round one. Anytime you have two guys of this nature going toe-to- toe, you just know you are in for a special treat. I am looking forward to fistic fireworks at the Tropicana on the Atlantic City boardwalk come July 17th.” The heavy-handed Tua (WBO #2), who is promoted by Gotham Boxing, is unbeaten in his last fourteen contests since dropping a decision to former IBF heavyweight champion Chris Byrd in 2001. Tua is one of the most dynamic punchers in heavyweight history, holding knockout victories over DAVID TUA

MONTE “TWO GUNZ” BARRETT

former heavyweight champions, John Ruiz (KO1), Oleg Maskaev (TKO11), Hasim Rahman (TKO10), and Michael Moorer (KO1). After two-year hiatus from the ring, Tua returned in October of 2009, in his home country of New Zealand, to blow out fellow New Zealander Shane Cameron (23-1, 20 KO’s) in the 2nd round, picking up the WBO Asia Pacific heavyweight title, and WBO Oriental heavyweight title in the process. In his last outing in March of this year, Tua won a dominating twelve round unanimous decision over perennial heavyweight contender, Friday Ahunanya. Tua is hoping a win over Barrett sets himself up for another crack at the heavyweight championship. Barrett, who holds victories over previously unbeaten contenders and Owen Beck (24-0), Dominick Guinn (24-0), as well as Tye Fields (41-1), is looking to get back into the win column after suffering a hard fought decision loss to highly regarded Russian prospect Alexander Ustinov (20-0, 16 KO’s) in December of last year. Tickets are priced at $100 (ringside), $50 and $30. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Star Boxing office at (718) 823-2000 or visiting www.starboxing. com. Tickets may also be purchased at any Ticketmaster outlet, or by going online to Ticketmaster.com.

Fire Away

What’s the best handgun for home defense? Let me introduce myself, Domenick J. Rocco. I was formerly with the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife, a Deputy Conservation Officer. I am a certified law enforcement firearms instructor and a certified law enforcement trainer. I own and operate my own training company, The ROTAC Training Group. Some of the viewpoints in these columns are mine, but a lot of the training issues and suggestions are from a wealth of information gathered over the years from some of the top law enforcement trainers in the world. I have been blessed to have been trained by and to have trained with these exceptionally talented individuals. Jersey Sporting Life has asked me to provide a monthly column to this magazine, and asked that my first topic be on what I feel is the best handgun for home defense. So, let’s get started by saying that if you ask ten different people, you will get ten different answers. Since this is my article, you are getting my opinion. You may disagree and you have the right to do that, but make sure you can back up your opinion with facts. I have had the opportunity to train a lot of people, from the novice to the very experienced and have learned a lot from all of them. Unless you are a very experienced operator or gun handler, I would suggest the 3” or 4” barrel, six-shot revolver. Now, I know some of you are going ballistic. “Revolver! That’s an outdated piece of equipment,” you might say. Really? Let me explain. Those of you who know me know that I am not a “gadget guy,” and I favor simple functional solution sin solving problems that work quickly and effectively. When dealing with firearms, there is nothing simpler than a wheelgun. It is easy to load as well as unload. It has a built-in 2010 Jersey Sporting Life

safety, which is that long heavy trigger pull. You really need to press through it to make the gun go “bang.” If you press the trigger and you get a click, all you need to do is press it again and that should resolve the gun firing problem. They are available in most of the most formidable handgun calibers.

on target

by Domenick J. Rocco

That all seems to fit into my world where the number one rule is the “KISS Rule,” (Keep it simple, stupid). The smaller, five-shot, 2” barrel revolvers are nice, especially for concealed carry, but they are not as easy to shoot as the larger 3” or 4” combat revolvers, especially with the heavier .38 special loads or more potent 357 mag. Loads. For practice purposes, it’s a little difficult to practice with your gun when your hand is feeling as if someone smacked it with a hammer after you have fired only a few rounds. The five-shot, 2” revolvers are for experienced gun handlers, especially the Airlites. If you are going to own a handgun for home defense, you better plan on practicing a lot so you become proficient with ith. Purchasing and owning any type of firearm for self-defense is a really large responsibility to take on. I will discuss that in future articles. That’s my opinion with some facts to back it up. The choice is yours, but remember, whatever you choose, make sure you get some good training from an experienced, certified firearms instructor. Head of the Glass By Gary Monterosso Forget the Wine with Dinner…Beer is Better Top chefs give their take on why beer is the better choice to enhance your meal At the annual New York Bar Show, my interest in matching beer with food was reaffirmed by the importance placed on the subject by the breweries that were present. In fact, I presented eight seminars with my pal, Chef Rocky Fino, author of “Will Cook for Sex.” Brewery personnel are going to great lengths to educate consumers on the basics of pairings. Staying for several days in the Greenwich Village section of New York, I visited several small dining establishments, all of which had small but comprehensive beer menus. By that I refer to the fact that the selections were varied, not by number, but by styles. Purely by accident, I was able to chat with an executive chef of one of the bistros, who just happened to stop in for a couple of beers on his off day. I picked his brain regarding his beer options and he answered by noting that a good, flavorful brew is not only a fine accompaniment to food, but offers the diner a relatively inexpensive beverage option. The four spots at which I dined during my stay all had decent beer collections, though no spot maintained more than 10 different choices. Listen to what noted chef David Burke had to say regarding the marriage between beer and food: “I’m continually being surprised by the new and delicious combinations. While wine can accompany a meal, it’s not an active participant in the feast the way beer is. Beer’s complexity provides layers of flavor in my dishes and with my pairings that I could never achieve with wine. Sorry, old friend. The core ingredients of beer that yield flavor, hops and barley, are more varied than wine. Again, nothing personal. And beer often has other interesting ingredients that take it to another level – Grains of Paradise, lemon zest, coriander, cinnamon… just to name a few. In fact, food and beer and very like-minded in their composition: same flavors, same textures and Page 22

www.SportingLifeNj.com

same aromas. It’s these similarities that make food and beer pairings so easy. Simply, there are no rules to pairing food with beer. Experiment a little and see what works. Some of the best food and beer pairings I ever tasted were things I just stumbled on. All you need is great food and a great flavorful beer; the rest will take care of itself.” Jim Koch, founder of Samuel Adams (Boston Beer Company) added the following: “Until the explosion of the American craft beer movement, we lacked beers good enough and diverse enough to pair with a wide variety of excellent food. Drinkers have become more adventurous in looking for new options to pair with a good meal and are ready, willing and able to look beyond the wine list. As a result, bee is becoming the new wine. Where wine has trouble with spicy foods, the malt body of beer can balance the flavors. The carbonation in beer cleans the tongue, allowing for perfect pairings with fatty and oily foods. And with beer, matching principles are more intuitive.” One thing is for certain, beer finally is getting the respect it deserves in the culinary world. One of the biggest events of the year is coming to Atlantic City from July 29-August 1. The Food Network Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival will take place throughout the Harrah’s properties (Harrah’s Caesar’s, Bally’s, Showboat) featuring celebrities including Guy Fieri, Ted Allen, Pat & Gina Neely, Sandra Lee, Guy Fieri, Sunny Anderson, Melissa d’Arabian and others. I’ve been hired by the company to offer what I’ll feel will be an outstanding tasting seminar. On August 1, come join me at the show for a sampling of eight outstanding beers. Go to www.acfoodandwine. com for more details and to buy your ticket. Jersey Sporting Life 2010

I have a passion for cigars. Let me introduce myself. I am a second generation American Italian raised in Trenton, N.J. in the 60’s and 70’s. I have two distinct and happy memories of cigar smokers from when I was young. First was my father’s friend Patsy who always had what I would call a stogie, not always lit, in his mouth. The second was the owner of a tool & die shop. Every day, when I was an apprentice, he would ask me to take a break, go around the corner to the bar and get him a tube Garcia Vega Cigar. What pleasurable thoughts. In my 15 or so years of enjoying and getting to know cigars, and now working at Williams Totally Tobacco in Vineland, NJ, I’ve learned many things! First and foremost, all that seems alike is not, and price is not always a good indicator of a great smoke. To really begin, let’s get basic. The makeup, the origin, the region of the tobacco has everything to do with the quality, taste and strength of your cigar. The quality of your cigar depends on how much care and attention is given to the tobacco leaf from seed to harvest! Let’s not forget that is only the beginning. The fermentation and blend means everything to taste, and a good roller means everything in how you will probably enjoy your cigar. Without getting into every detail of cigar making and losing half of you reading this, let’s talk leaves. Different parts of the tobacco plant yield leaves that have their own function in the makeup of a cigar. They start at the bottom of the plant at harvest, this leaf is called Volado which is mild, Seco to Ligero, at the top, are full bodied.

Cigar wrappers come in all color ranges from Candela, which are green/ yellow to very dark Maduro.

2010 Jersey Sporting Life

As for the components of the cigar, filler, makes up the majority of it. These leaves can come from different fields, regions and countries. They have little to do with taste, only about 25-35%. Binder leaf is strong and flexible which holds the filler and form-shape of your cigar. Wrapper, the outer leaf, should be smooth, thick and oily depending on what type and where it comes from. The wrapper gives from 35-75% of the taste of a cigar. The body-strength comes from the filler. Very little taste comes from the binder. There are two main standards for tobacco wrappers. American Market-A.M.S. and English Market-E.M.S. A.M.S. wrappers are light green to greenish-yellowish tan known as Candela, Double Claro and Jade. E.M.S wrappers are brown and known as Claro, Colorado and Natural. The best wrappers are grown in Connecticut, Cuba, Cameroon, Sumatra, and Dominican Republic. As filler goes, your best comes from Nicaragua, Cuba, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Mexico. The better binders, I’m told, come from Cuba, Connecticut, Mexico and Ecuador. Let’s get to color. Your colors range from Candela or Double Claro-light which are green to yellowish tan; Claro is a light tan to tan; Colorado Claro is light brown; Colorado is medium brown to brownish-red. Colorado Maduro is a good brown; Maduro--dark redishbrown to very dark brown. Oscuro is darker than Maduro, almost black. The leaf is left longer on the plant for more exposure to the sun. Maduro and Oscuro are fermented the longest. Now that you know all there is to know about tobacco leaf (yeah right), the whole process is pick it; ferment it; age it. Then roll and press it, wrap it and age again. That’s it in a nut shell. Then there’s another important thing to talk about--like being able to enjoy a cigar out in public or, like, at a ball game? Sorry. Those years are gone. How about the race track? No way man! On the Boardwalk? Oh, maybe there’s a place where we can stand. But I will tell you, you still can enjoy a little league game from the parking lot or out in right or left field!! Or we can go way out to be considerate to others, like fishing, camping, etc. There are still a thousand different ways! Thank God…and America. Let’s keep it free as long as we can. There is a great deal more to know about the complex cigar. Look for my column next month. In the meantime, enjoy a cigar or two! www.SportingLifeNj.com

So you wanna play poker! Well by now we have all seen it. It’s on television every day. People winning millions of dollars playing America’s favorite pastime. Especially now with the economy the way it is, why not you? Well before you quit your day job, there are a few things you should know.

learn the ropes of casino table games too. Also, don’t for get about your local library. You would be surprised of the free information in the gaming section. Plus every poker room in Atlantic City has racks of free poker magazines. So you don’t need to spend a dime on learning the basics.

This column is going to start at the beginning. It is going to be different from other written poker material out there. I’m not one for reinventing the wheel. There is a ton of resources out there on how to win at poker and the game theory behind it. In future articles, I will even be recommending my favorite ones. However, these are written by mostly high stakes, Las Vegas players who tip higher than we mere mortals will buy in for. They know their stuff and certainly don’t need any help from me. So this column will cover winning at low limit cash games and low buy in tournaments. I will also show you how to manipulate the comp system to your advantage in the specific Atlantic City Casinos that have poker rooms.

When you finally decide to let the money burning a hole in your pocket out in A.C., there are some factors you need to consider when deciding where to go. First of all, Resorts, Trump Marina, Trump Plaza, and Hilton do not have poker rooms. Secondly, you do get comps for playing poker. It’s a different system than that of slots and table games. You are rated on an hourly basis. For example, every hour you play $2/$4 limit hold ‘em, the casino gives you fifty-cents. So if you have already established yourself at a casino that has poker, try there first. Third, you are probably going to be there for a while so pick a place that you feel comfortable with in terms of restaurants, atmosphere and clientele. Once you have picked your “hotspot”, all you need to do is learn a few tricks of the trade, and sit back and watch those comps roll in.

For the sake of this article, it is assumed that you know the basics of poker i.e. what beats what, the difference between limit and no limit structure, etc. If not, hit the internet. It’s all out there in spades. You can even play for free on a myriad of gambling sites. Heather Rose

Our lovely tattoed pinup this month is Heather Rose. She is a local lady who was born & raised in Margate. She has a history of tattoos. She got her first little tat when she was fourteen, but she really connected with the body art when she went through some tough times. It didn’t start out positive. “This in my way, was the way I dealt with my problems. I covered myself in tattoos. It was my way of dealing.” But the negative turned positive. Her large pin-up tattoo with butterflies on her back was inspired by her grandfather. My Grandfather owned the Strands Hotel the property that Steve Wynn bought to build the Golden Nugget. She says, “My grandfather was a ladies man and loved pin-ups. I inherited his love of the era, so that’s the reason for the pin-up tattoo. Ironically, the butterflies came about as my husband and I were talking about having kids. If it was a boy I told him I wanted to name it after my grandfather, and like a message from him a big, yellow butterfly landed on my finger. I kid you not. I swear he was sending a message. The tattoo is a dedication to him. But he is probably rolling in his grave that I tattooed my body.” “The big Buddha on my stomach with lotus flowers that I got when went through tough times and got it to channel some positive energy. Can’t say enough about how it kept me grounded and compassionate instead of getting negative about life.” But Heather is no biker chick. In fact she works a very large financial group as an office manager. We put all the bonds funding together for established, well-known institutions like the Delaware River Port Authority, the Cities of Miami and Los Angeles to name a few. “

“My boss is woman who is all about empowering women and put me in charge of compliance department. She has been my mentor and friend. My next tattoo is going be in honor of her. It’s going to be large swallow carrying a breast ribbon because she is a survivor of breast cancer. That will be my most emotional and cherished tattoo. Heather is also a mom. She has two children Mathew 8 and Jolie, 5. About her tattoos, “My kids love them,” she says with a smile. See more of Heather Rose on her Gallery Page at SportingLifeNJ.com. www.SportingLifeNj.com
