fter a month of short weeks and public holidays, we are all adjusting back to normal working weeks. To those who celebrate Easter, I hope you had a wonderful time with friends and family and to those who do not, I hope you enjoyed a relaxing break after what seems to have been a frantic start to 2022.

One of the biggest trends we have seen as a result of the pandemic over the last two years, is people reinventing their homes, turning them into places that suit their lifestyle and allow for a comfort of living that was previously not considered or required. People have gotten used to spending more time at home and as a result have gone to a lot of trouble to customise their homes to provide for an all-encompassing, stay-at-home lifestyle. Home gyms and offices, enhanced outdoor living space and additional greenery are some of the most common additions, alterations and considerations homeowners are making. But we are also seeing more unique spaces in homes such as art rooms, soundproof music rooms, yoga studios, climbing walls and various others. While I think the trend of wellness living at home is here to stay, it is important to consider what additions add the most value to your home and property as a whole. Rather than creating a space that has a unique function, one should always try to keep the space versatile. This way, it will be easier to make adjustments as your lifestyle requires or for prospective buyers to envision a space that can meet their needs. So, in a nutshell, try to not restrict future function or discourage potential buyers, where possible. I enjoy the family neighbourhood vibes – people walking their dogs, children riding their bikes and the small talk between residents in the streets and in the parks. It almost feels like the suburbs you see in the movies…

How do you start your day? Twenty minutes of meditation – well my version of meditation – which entails taking some time out to be grateful and mentally preparing myself for the day ahead. Following my quiet time, I go for a run or a walk in the neighbourhood just before sunrise.

What motivates you at work? Success motivates me to do an outstanding job – knowing hard work and perseverance will pay off. Further, being the new kid on the block excites me and I look forward to the new challenge.

What is one thing that has really surprised you about the real estate business? I always understood the real estate market to be vibrant and healthy, not realising just how vigorously competitive it is.

How do you ensure you remain relevant or how do you make your mark in the workplace? Listen and understand, be visible, study your competition, explore digital platforms, network, collaborate, embrace innovation and think outside the box.

In what ways do you invest in your personal development? Physically – I exercise daily and follow a healthy eating plan. Mentally – I indulge in non-fiction books (I highly recommend my current read, Atomic Habits by James Clear).

Why did you join Knight Frank and what does your current role entail?

Professionally – I stay up to date with the latest developments in the property market.

I love the people and the vibe at Knight Frank. It’s a place where you are given the platform to prove yourself and to make a name for yourself.

Academically – I’m currently finishing my second degree part-time, LLB.

Gardening with Fatima Aesthetic Sporty Spaces for an Active Lifestyle at Home

Over the years, I have developed a recipe for designing gardens. I keep the following in mind whilst designing, as per the order: Style, Function and Interest! These, in my opinion and belief, are the key ingredients of a successful design.

unction plays a pivotal role in design, however, the key is to implement it without compromising on the aesthetics. Take, for example, sporty spaces. Activities in the garden can add interest and a wow factor, killing two birds with one stone – which has always been my motto. Pools Swimming pools can be used for aquaerobics, an aquagym, aqua Zumba, volleyball, water basketball and water polo. And remember, just because it is practical, does not mean it cannot be pretty. Your pool can be the main feature to your garden’s entrance, be it formal or informal. For instance, instead of just having a lap pool, you can make it a rim-flow pool or add a letterbox fountain, for soothing sound effects and tranquil feel. Perhaps the pool is nestled amongst rocks or it is a natural pool – cleaned and filtered with plants within, rather than chemicals. Cricket Cricket enthusiasts can instal a backyard cricket net which can be fun for the whole family. If you would like it to blend in with the garden, simply instal gum poles and plant creepers or climbers to grow on them.

Chess Why not turn a section of your garden into a checkerboard lawn? In addition to affording the opportunity to play giant chess, it adds texture and interest. Plus, less grass means less maintenance. Boules Boules is another brilliant idea, referring to a collection of bowling or rolling games including bocce, bowls and pétanque. Perhaps the turf awaits at the end of a winding path…

Outdoor Gym An outdoor gym can be set up alongside a jungle gym with a sandpit, encouraging an active outdoor lifestyle for the whole family… or be tucked away as a hidden gem in a forest garden.

Bocce entails rolling bright, colourful balls in an underarm fashion, much like lawn bowls. Played with eight large balls, four per team, the objective is to throw your bocce balls closer to the pallino or jack (one smaller target or object ball) than your opponent.

Bowls, or lawn bowls, is typically played on a large rectangular surface, or bowling green. The green comprises either natural manicured grass or artificial turf and the surface can be flat, convex or uneven. While there are indoor venues, outdoor bowling greens are typically preferred. The goal is to roll biased (unsymmetrical) balls so they stop as close as possible to a smaller ball (jack/ kitty). Pétanque is an outdoor game played by two opposing teams that try to throw boules (orange-sized metallic spheres) as close as possible to a but or cochonne (a little wooden sphere the size of a plastic bottle cork). There are junior bowls for sale, designed to be comfortable to hold and use for the younger family members.

Maze or Labyrinth A maze or a labyrinth can be an incredible addition to your garden, if you have the space and interest. It can be done with hedges, grasses or simply gravel. Maze: Complex branching multicursal puzzle with choices of path and direction. Labyrinth: Unicursal puzzle with a single path to the centre. Possible shrubs one can use for a maze include English boxwood (Buxus microphylla 'Faulkner'), common myrtle (Myrtus communis), small leaf privet (Ligustrum ibota), magenta cherry (Syzygium paniculatum, previously Eugenia myrtifolia), or coastal rosemary (Westringia fruticosa). Indigenous varieties are dune crowberry (Searsia crenata, previously Rhus crenata), Cape honeysuckle (Tecomaria Capensis), sagewood / butterfly bush / mountain sage (Buddleja salviifolia varieties) and many more. Ask your local nurserymen for advice on practical and complementary varieties. Mazes can be fun and beneficial. Functioning as a brain-boosting exercise, they can help improve the cognitive skills of children such as attention, logic, memory, reasoning and visual processing. There are many different types of labyrinths worldwide, dating back thousands of years. Arguably the most famous example is the 11-circuit Chartres Cathedral labyrinth. Today one can also find free-form, modern, triangle and three-dimensional labyrinths. Labyrinths can help calm the body and quiet the mind as one meanders along the turnings, losing track of direction, time and the outside world. 22

Putting A putting green, done with natural or artificial grass, can become part of your existing lawn. For the former, natural grass such as royal blue (Cynodon transvaalensis) is ideal or gulf green (golf green) which resembles a putting green finish. It is soft underfoot and capable of handling high traffic. In summer, however, it is a fast grower requiring once-weekly moving. When it comes to artificial grass, there are many varieties to choose from. Some look so similar to natural grass that it is hard to distinguish unless inspected closely. Tennis A tennis court does not have to be in a demarcated area. If the lawn area is large enough, one can prepare the soil area to prevent erosion by adding a sustainable urban

drainage system (SUDS) or BodPave under the lawn before laying it. When the court is not in use, nets can be removed. A conventional tennis court can have multiple functions – tennis, netball and basketball. Should you wish, you can hide the fencing with formal hedges or create an informal mixed border bed on the perimeter to soften the structure. Croquet And let us not forget about old-fashioned croquet – a lovely pastime for young and old. All you need is a well-maintained lawn of kikuyu or buffalo grass. While the court size is typically 17.5 m x 14 m, you can adjust the game to fit your garden’s characteristics or your lawn to fit the game – longer grass and a rougher surface make for a great smaller court.

Brief History

Dating back almost 100 years… and still further yet. Kelvin Grove’s history started in 1925 when the company Western Province Sports Club was originally formed. Home Gyms Working Out & Working from Home

hile the concept of home fitness has been around for decades, it has certainly evolved – and our home spaces with it. We have come a long way since Jack LaLanne (fitness and nutrition guru and motivational speaker who popularised fitness in America), the Jane Fonda Workout (exercise videos by film icon Jane Fonda) and Richard Simmons (American fitness personality and public figure). Not to mention direct response television advertising gadgets and quick fixes for getting fit and shedding weight, amongst other things. In the last two years, we have embraced a world of fitness shaped by YouTube videos, livestreamed workouts and more personalised classes via Zoom. It was a welcome escape and relief from sitting behind a desk at home – where some put in more time than they typically did at the office. But things, as they do, continue to change. While many have returned to gyms, studios and personal trainers, others have or are still trying to find comfortable and effective ways to exercise at home. At the end of the day, it does not matter which you prefer. The important thing is staying physically active because it cannot only extend your life but literally save it. WHO recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week, or a combination of both. If you can add breathing exercises and meditation to the routine, even better. If exercising at home is your preference, though, or you would like to start working out at home more regularly, why not make your workout space as attractive and comfortable as possible? While you can achieve WHO’s recommendations at home without abundant space and special equipment, here are some things to consider and ideas to play around with.

A Brief History of Tennis - its Lore and Legend

he origins of tennis almost certainly pre-date the ancient Egyptians who depicted, some claim, an early precursor being played – almost nude on piggyback. Later evidence confirms, that from approximately 1000 AD, French monks played “Je de paume”, meaning “game of the hand”, in their walled-off monasteries. The serving player yelled “tenez!” meaning “hold”, “receive”, or more probably, “take that!!!!”. This strongly suggests that etymologically, “tenez” is the great-grand ancestor of “tennis”. In English, the word “tennetz” was first used by

Chaucer’s friend, the poet John Gower, who mused that no point is over till the ball lies still. After centuries of cloistering, the pastime emerged into society, where enthusiasm for it surged, even among the nobility. It became so popular that Louis IV made a futile attempt to ban it but by the 13th century, almost two thousand indoor venues had been established throughout the kingdom. It then crossed the channel to proliferate in late mediaeval England where both Henry VII and Henry

VIII, became avid enthusiasts. The fabled latter monarch was a formidable indoor player and had many facilities constructed, including Hampton Court, which was built for the erstwhile favoured but later humiliated, Cardinal Wolsey. Originally, the game was played bare-handed but, seeking every advantage, players began using gloves with webbed fingers and/ or a solid paddle on the palm. Attesting to the known-world’s fascination with the amusement, “racquet” probably derives from

the Arabic “rahat”, which means “palm of the hand”. A major change was replacing the traditional woollen balls with sawdust-stuffed leather ones that offered more bounce. Further progress was the addition of tight weaving across a looped stick, the forebear of skilfully shaped racquets with sheep gut strings. These, with light cork balls, entered play sometime in the 1500s. The points system that became the universal standard, started with the quarterhours of a clock-face showing the score. Speculation has it that the logical 15, 30, 45-system devolved to 15, 30, 40 because “five and fourty”, ”quarante cinq”, “fünfundvierzig”, and especially “cuarenta y cinco” were too big a mouthful for the breathless players. At Hampton Court where authentic “real” or “royal” tennis can be played to this day, membership costs a less than princely annual subscription of approximately £400. The indoor version allows using the walls and gallery roofs to bounce the ball beyond the opponents’ reach. Throughout history, changes to the sport were introduced piecemeal and by local consent. One, the vulcanised rubber ball invented in 1850, allowed for play on grass courts. This reinvigorated interest, and equipment sets patented by Major Walter Wingfield, the acknowledged father of lawn tennis and its rules, became widely available. These were bought en masse by the burgeoning middle classes who’d become wealthy and leisured after the Industrial Revolution. Hourglassshaped courts were briefly introduced in 1874 but reverted to a rectangle of standardized dimensions in 1877. By convention, tournaments were menonly affairs, with the first Wimbledon ladies’ champion, Blanche Bingley, being acclaimed in 1886. Until the early 20th century, hats, ties, and bustles for the gentlewomen along with plimsoll shoes were de rigueur but by the 1930s tennis fashion rules had so relaxed that dresses had become skirts and male players

were allowed to wear shorts. The basic canvass and rubber plimsolls were made obsolete by advancing footwear technology, which, half a century later, represents the multi-billion dollar union of material science, industrial design, and mega-brand building. Although white balls remain available, they were phased out of the professional game by 1986, when tradition succumbed to commerce and Wimbledon accepted yellow for greater television visibility. The Internationaux de France de Tennis was first contested in 1891 and some thirty years later the tournament and venue were renamed to honour the heroic French aviator, Roland Garros, who died in the Great War. Roland-Garros (the venue’s name is always hyphenated) is one of only four Grand Slam tournaments, alongside the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the United States Open. It is also the only one played on clay, a surface with its own fascinating story. Roland-Garros has hosted ninety-one Grand Slam occasions and in 2022, the 126th Roland-Garros French Open takes place from Sunday 22 May until Sunday 5 June.

The grass-court Championships, which celebrate their current abode's centennial this year, remain a bastion of dress code tradition. Players may still not wear more than dashes of colour in outfits that exclude even “off-white” or “cream.” Fortunately for spectators, the latter shade continues to grace the luscious strawberries forever associated with this iconic sporting and social event. In 2022, the 135th Wimbledon Championships start on Monday 27 June and the men’s final is on Sunday 10 July.

The race is organised and presented with all participating athletes at the focal point. Their satisfaction, well-being and enjoyment of the race are the organisers’ primary goals. They aim to deliver an unsurpassed and unforgettable mountain bike and African travel-experience with 24-hour, full-service facilities during the race, including tented accommodation in race villages, breakfasts and dinners, race nutrition, bike servicing, masseurs and stage location-specific entertainment every evening. All riders must enter as a two-rider team, registering in one of five different categories – Men, Women, Mixed, Masters and Grand Masters. The team must remain together at all times during the race and is expected to reach the finish line at a specified time daily. At each stage, the winners of the day receive prizes and the leaders in the overall classification are awarded their leader jerseys.

Cape Town Cycle Tour The Cape Town Cycle Tour, presented by Pick n Pay, is the largest, timed cycling event in the world featuring thousands of cyclists circling the Cape Peninsula. For the past 44 years, it has contributed millions of rands to social upliftment and cycling development through its beneficiaries, the Rotary Club of Claremont and the Pedal Power Association. This has only been possible thanks to the incredible support of the thousands of participants from around the world who turn out each year in support of what the Cycle Tour stands for – the promotion of health and fitness through the sport of cycling, while at the same time generating much-needed funds for those who are less fortunate. The Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo is South Africa's largest cycling, fitness and healthy lifestyle show with hundreds of exhibitors and tens of thousands of visitors. HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series is an annual series of international rugby sevens tournaments. It is run by World Rugby featuring national sevens teams for men and women. Organised for the first time in the 1999/2000 season as the IRB World Sevens Series, the competition was formed to promote an elite level of international rugby sevens and develop the game into a viable commercial product. An overall champion (for both men

and women) is crowned at the end of the season, based on points accumulated throughout all of the events. The season circuit consists of 10 tournaments that generally begin in November or December and last until May. Tournaments are played on five of the six populated continents in 10 countries – South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, France and England each host one event. The Blitzboks won the series on four occasions – in the 2008/09 season, as well as back-to-back in 2017 and 2018 and again in 2021 by winning two tournaments in Canada after the series was impacted due to COVID-19. A STAR ON THE RISE

he All Africa Junior Golf Championships were recently held at Palm Springs in Cairo, Egypt.

The feeling of putting in a good score in a tournament makes the hours of practice all worth it and definitely motivates me.

Here, South African junior golfer, Bobbi Olivia Brown, secured the individual title in the girl’s category.

What do you love about the sport today?

We had the pleasure of interviewing her to discover more about her passion for golf, what inspires her and her recipe for success. How old were you when you started playing golf? I started taking golf seriously around the age of 13 when I began playing in tournaments with other kids my age. Why did you keep playing? At the beginning I was motivated to keep playing the same way I think most golfers do, which is shooting lower scores; it’s an addictive game. The first few tournaments I played I noticed I was far behind the average 13-year-old golfer, as most of my competitors had been playing since they were younger. So I was really motivated to work towards being at a level where I could compete and win competitions, which took me many years. I won my first provincial tournament in 2021 after 4 to 5 years of playing competitions.

Today I love that I can look at my upcoming schedule of tournaments and know I’m practising to try and win these tournaments. I love the pressure during big tournaments and how I’ve learnt to channel. It’s hard to say you love golf when you just made a double bogey or something worse and any golfer will tell you that. However, making a birdie or a good par save outweighs all frustration from a bad round or a bad hole – knowing it’s possible to turn a game around in a few holes keeps me excited and focused on my game. Who’s your biggest supporter? I’m very lucky to have many supporters from my home club, Steenberg, who are all so kind to me and have been since I first started playing. My golf coach Etienne Oliver, who has been there from day one, may be my biggest supporter; I know I’m his biggest supporter. Then of course there are my parents and my dad usually travels with me to all my golf competitions in

South Africa and the rest of the world. I’m very grateful that he’s able to watch so many of my events and be there for all the very happy and sometimes sad moments. What motivates you to improve your game and performance at tournaments? The urge to win a tournament and feel the success is the biggest motivation. I want to prove to many people that I can do it and I’m going to try to be the best I can possibly be. I love that my life revolves around being outdoors and active and dedicated to something. Do you have a routine or recipe for success with regards to your diet, exercise routine and mental game? I’m very fortunate to have a biokineticist – Brian – whom I work with twice a week to stay strong for golf and to help prevent injuries. I often struggle with injuries, I think because I’m so tall and need to get much stronger so my muscles don’t take as much strain during my golf swing. I also do some of my own training sessions on the days I don’t see Brian and I stretch morning and evening, which is something I’m working to improve my consistency.

I work with Grant for my mental coaching. It’s great to have someone to talk to about things going on in your head while you're on the golf course under pressure as well as things happening in my life that are bothering me, whatever it may be. My diet isn’t exactly perfect but I try to eat balanced meals and make sure I stay away from fast food for the most part. But I prioritise my calories when playing events.

Throughout the course of my last event I burnt 4,000 calories, 5 days in a row, so it’s very important to eat enough so I don’t burn out by the end of the tournament. On the course I make sure to snack on protein bars and nuts as well as drink lots of water and rehydrate. It’s very important to eat so you can stay focused for your 4 to 5-hour round of golf.

Do you have any advice for young, aspiring female golfers? My biggest advice for any young golfer: Don’t give up just because you don’t see your name on the leaderboards. It takes a long time to get golf going and everyone starts at a different age, so don’t worry if you are 15 and have never won a golf tournament. If you keep working hard you will win and

after that first win, you’ll gain confidence. It’s a game about experience. You can’t have huge expectations because no matter how prepared you are for a tournament you might have a couple of bad days. But it happens to everyone and you just have to stay focused and keep pushing on. Bobbi was also part of the South African team – along with Samantha Whateley and Lucinda Kyra van Kan – that was crowned 2022 girl’s category champions.

Croquet, the Ageless Game of Style and Grace

t’s hard to think of a pastime, excepting perhaps yoga, with a lower adrenaline count than croquet. In that lies the pleasure its adherents find in this genteel and ultra-relaxing game. Even in world championship matches, the exclamations of spectators and players are seldom more than a murmur and the loudest sounds are the clack of mallet, click of ball, and the cooing of doves among autumnal leaves.

social conventions, and the character development that attends playing the game. This last genre is epitomised by the formidably titled “Cheating, Gender Roles, and the Nineteenth-Century Croquet Craze” in which the racy reaches of the pastime’s netherworld are explored in spicy detail.

This serene atmosphere evaporates when chums get together for a round on any old lawn, decently trimmed or not, with foaming beverages, quaffable plonk, or both accompanying the action. Though never robust and seldom stressed, competitive croqueteers (pat. pending) are known to raise alternating roars of delight and disapproval. Albeit related to Thor’s hammer, no mallet has turned up as exhibit “A” in any prosecution for its nefarious use during a match. Of course, no historical records are ever fully complete, but croquet players by nature, just aren’t that stripe of sportsfolk.

Croquet, formerly known as ‘paille – maille’ meaning “ball-mallet” may have originated in France between the 16th and 17th centuries but could also date from the 1300s, or even before. The intricately detailed St Lô tapestry depicts peasantry and gentry in an idyllic setting, at play with balls and clubs. Though such gear is in the DNA of many sports, from polo to hurling, something in the wide-footed posture and relaxed expression is recognisably croquetish (also pat. pending). This form of the game was known as ground or lawn billiards, with its main distinction being that hoops stuck into the playing surface replaced the pockets.

A quick search for “croquet” on Google Scholar shows at least 35,000 treatises on topics such as the architectural principles of setting out a croquet lawn, the sport's

Croquet’s History

Sports historians theorise that the game was originally played with makeshift implements tinkered together from

broomsticks and bung mallets used to whack or nudge wooden balls through woven wickets of willow wand. The levels of seriousness have increased exponentially since those days with match-play hoops now having the tiniest of clearances (2-3 mm) between the ball and the legs. An ancestral version crossed the channel during the reign of England’s Charles II but in the 1830s a similar entertainment called “crooky” migrated from Ireland and became popular throughout Britain. Croquet was generally played by the aristocracy on velvety lawns, but rougher species of competition could be had on most town commons or any tavern's patch of grass. As its popularity surged, the game was exported throughout the Empire and an association to formalise the rules was founded at Wimbledon, home of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. This encouraged its proliferation and related business opportunities were seized. The foremost manufacturer of kits today is the company John Jacques & Sons, which was established some two hundred years back. One of their simpler mid-twentieth century sets now sells for close to $3,000.

Croquet’s zenith was the 1900 Paris Olympics, where an Alice-in-Wonderland twist saw France win all the golds because it was the only national entry. Ultimately, croquet’s general popularity waned as it was shouldered out to the far margins of sport. Yet, even today the admittedly modest World Championship attracts entries from countries as distant as New Zealand and Egypt whose on-lawn rivalry matches that between the Boks and the All Blacks. After WW2, by simplifying the rules and miniaturising the kit, croquet was marketed as a kiddies’ backyard game. No longer seen as a sport but a mere pastime, this was a setback for the game’s development. Despite these ups and downs, it undergoes frequent resuscitation and continues, without fanfare, to grow in popularity.

Croquet in South Africa The first recorded homes of croquet in South Africa were the Cape and Natal Crown colonies. The Last Outpost had some clay and gravel courts, but the majority were grassed, due to the favourable climate. Clay and gravel courts were laid in the Cape because of the dry hot summers. The Western Cape presently has croquet clubs at Kelvin Grove, Rondebosch, Wilderness, Knysna, and Somerset West. Gauteng has several clubs as do both KZN and the Eastern Cape. In 1982 a team of six Springbok players competed in a test match in Palm Beach, Florida against the USA. South Africa edged the win, powered by the skill of 14-year-old schoolboy, Reginald Bamford.

Another remarkable croqueteering (yet another pat. pending) achievement belongs to the current SA singles champion, Victor Dladla, who has held the crown nine times since 2007.

Types of Croquet Played Around the World Several forms of the game currently coexist: association croquet, golf croquet, garden croquet, American six-wicket, nine-wicket croquet, extreme croquet, and bicycle croquet. These evolutions have allowed for increasingly tougher challenges which have attracted fresh interest. Association Croquet: In matches, paired teams play four balls, all of which must pass through every hoop in a set sequence, eventually hitting the central peg to finish the game. If certain requirements are met, as in snooker or billiards, an unlimited series of shots can be played. Golf Croquet: Each player takes a turn to strike their ball through the hoops in sequence. American six-wicket: This six-hoop version predominates in the United States. It demands strategic play and differs from association croquet regarding the "deadness" of the ball just played.

Nine-Wicket Croquet: This is the most traditional form and is mostly favoured by recreational players. Extreme Croquet: This variation doesn’t have any specific field dimensions or out-of-bounds and is played on any terrain. Bicycle Croquet: Players alternate strokes and are not allowed to touch the ground with any parts of their bodies. Every individual play has a time limit of 10 seconds.

ABOUT LOUIS CHANU Tell us about yourself. From a young age, I loved being in nature and sculpting was something that came naturally to me. Playing with clay near a riverbed or making shapes out of materials found around me was how I expressed myself. Living in Swaziland as a young child and being free to roam the mountains there had a huge impact on me and instilled a love of nature and my surroundings which I still carry with me. I find the human form fascinating; I love the organic shapes, which inspire me to sculpt. I have always had a restless mind and love the challenge of playing with new materials and seeing how I can break barriers with these materials. I am a self-taught artist, sculpting from a young age. When I was in my late teens, I did a workshop with Charles Goddard which was very inspiring. From there I started working in clay and progressed through the years with different materials. Freedom is very important to me and sculpting allows me freedom of expression – as well as the freedom and opportunity to determine where and when I sculpt. Flying and family are important to me and sculpting gives me the freedom to enjoy these as well; not being restricted by a corporate job. My aim with my work at the moment is to really interpret light. I am loving working with bio-based plant carbon epoxy resin as it allows the most incredible dynamics of light with form. A bronze sculpture will always look the same, no matter what time of day it is or where the sculpture is placed. I have used nickel plating with bronze which does allow some ‘play’ with light/reflection, but with this resin the sculpture can go from looking transparent to solid and varies completely depending on weather conditions and time of day. I am thoroughly enjoying this journey of expression and creativity.

What initially attracted you to the world of art? I wasn’t really attracted to the world of art as such; I just seemed to have a talent with sculpture. From a young age, playing with clay and making sculptures was something that just felt right. It was my way of expressing myself and interpreting the world around me. This is how I got involved in the art world. Tell us about your style? I follow my heart with this and my style has changed over time. It really depends on where I am in my life. I love experimenting with new materials and challenging myself to find ways of breaking through barriers with different materials, as I get bored quickly. I started with clay, then moved on to making bronze sculpture (originals out of clay and wax) before turning to steel and stainless steel illuminated sculpture. The last few years I’ve been experimenting with bio-based plant carbon resin. I love the dynamic quality of light, so using materials that absorb and reflect light, allowing for interesting dynamics with my sculpture, is what I aim to achieve.

ART IN CAPE TOWN & SOUTH AFRICA

Which part of your career do you find most rewarding? Designing new sculptures and innovating; finding new methods of making unique sculptures. Where do you get your inspiration from? This varies and doesn’t come from one particular place. It can be something I see in my surroundings, a vision I have, or thoughts I have when I see a new material; imagining what I can do with it. I have a very lively imagination so I only need a thought or image to spark my inspiration. In general, nature and organic form are the biggest inspirations for me. Which hobbies and interests keep you busy when you are not working on a piece? I love flying and have built my own aircraft and travelled with them. I also love being in nature and spending time, particularly in the Eastern Cape, with my family and pets. What have you learnt in the last couple of years, in general or about yourself? I have learnt to slow down, to be grateful for what I have and to try to enjoy the journey, rather than fixating on the outcome too much. Accumulation, Assets and Acceleration If 2020 saw the fortunes of the wealthy remain resilient, then 2021 saw them accumulate. Flora Harley unpicks the latest numbers from the Knight Frank Wealth Sizing Model, compiled by our data science lead James Culley, to assess the extent of those gains.

he world is still enduring a period of significant disruption. While the Covid-19 pandemic has primarily been a health crisis, the knock-on effects on economies, markets and assets have been astounding in many ways. Globally, pandemic-related restrictions and lifestyle shifts have led to amassed savings and an increase in levels of wealth that has not been seen for years.

The only world region to see a decline (-0.8%) in its UHNWI population was Africa. According to our Attitudes Survey, the continent’s wealth advisors were also the most pessimistic about their clients’ wealth prospects. Indeed, three out of the five nations to see their UHNWI populations fall the most were in Africa.

Our Attitudes Survey reveals that, on average, just shy of two-thirds of UHNWI wealth is allocated to property. Just under a third of total wealth is held in principal and second homes, while the remainder is invested directly or indirectly (through real estate investment trusts (REITs), for example) into investment property.

ACCUMULATION AND ASSETS

Our number crunching reveals that the world’s population of UHNWIs (those with net assets of US$30 million or more, including their primary residence) rose by 9.3% in 2021, following on from growth of 2.4% in 2020. This is reflected in the results of our Attitudes Survey: 82% of respondents (wealth advisors and private bankers) said their clients’ wealth had increased last year, with more than half describing the rise as “significant” (defined as more than 10%).

The savings amassed during 2020 have enabled significant investment upside over the past 12 months. Access to technology and the digital democratisation of investments, including private equity, have led to greater levels of wealth creation and growth. This is something that will gain momentum over the coming years.

Our analysis of prime residential market performance on page 50 highlights the contribution of rising house prices around the globe, while for investment property the most recent data from the MSCI Global Property Fund Index shows a total return of 10% for 2021. The Macrobond FTSE EPRA/ NAREIT World Equity REITs Index saw a 33% return for the year.

Over the past five years, the previous optimism peak was in 2017 when 72% of respondents to our Attitudes Survey said their clients’ wealth had increased and we saw the world’s ultra-wealthy population grow by 10%, incubated by what were described as “Goldilocks” economic conditions. The backdrop is vastly different today, but the story for wealth and asset performance is not dissimilar.

ACCELERATION Asset price rises, from property markets to stock markets to luxury collectibles, have all helped to boost the fortunes of those wealthy enough to hold investment portfolios. The top five gainers for UHNWIs, in absolute terms, were the US, the UK, France, Japan and the Chinese mainland. Equity markets played a big role with the French CAC 40 up around 30% during 2021, the US S&P 500 rising over 25% and the UK FTSE 250 around 15% higher.

Few imagined at the start of the Covid-19 crisis that we would experience the V- or “Nike Swoosh”-shaped recovery that saw many economies back to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2021. This may explain why our Attitudes Survey respondents are so bullish – 83% expect their clients’ wealth to increase in 2022. The five-year forecasts generated by our Wealth Sizing Model have duly increased given the prospects for wealth growth and creation in the coming years. Between 2021 and 2026, we forecast

that the global UHNWI population will grow by a further 28%. Over the ten years to 2026 that represents a more than doubling in the number of global UHNWIs – from 348,355 to 783,671. By 2026, Asia will surpass Europe as the second largest regional wealth hub. During that time we predict, for example, that Singapore will have witnessed a 268% growth in its UHNWI population to around 6,000. However, tenyear growth is led by Australasia. The region’s UHNWI population, led by New Zealand (from 1,249 to 4,618), is expected to more than treble by 2026. As mentioned before, the ease with which investments can now be made and the speed of innovation will help to create new fortunes globally. As the Hong Kong-based digital entrepreneur Yat Siu points out in our interview on page 9, the metaverse offers the opportunity for anybody connected to the internet to create wealth in ways that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. Further opportunities are discussed by our “Inside wealth” panellists over the following pages, but we should perhaps temper our exuberance. As the aforementioned African wealth growth numbers show, wealth creation among UHNWIs has not been equal. But away from the ranks of the asset-rich, the disparity is even starker with global inequality levels, exacerbated by rising energy and food costs, increasing – even in the developed world. Some mutter ominously about revolution, and a group of US millionaires is even calling to be taxed more (see page 24) to help correct the imbalance. Against this backdrop, it would be cognisant to recognise that wealth creation cannot continue in a vacuum. READ MORE 89
