While landscaping and embellishments may seem like an expensive outlay, maximising a property’s use and full potential is one of the greatest additions one can make.
Standing Out Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2022 06
It is however very apparent that a property with a well-designed, manicured garden can be a major factor in swaying potential purchasers towards one home over another. Impressive outdoor spaces can make a vital first impression and add greatly to the overall feel of a home. While landscaping and embellishments may seem like an expensive outlay, maximising a property’s use and full potential is one of the greatest additions one can make. And, if done properly, it is likely to more than pay for itself when the time comes to sell your home.
DIRECTOR & CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER, KNIGHT
Heading into September, we say goodbye to winter and welcome the beginning of spring! While the five-month period from April to August was fairly subdued in the property market, spring is typically the time of year when movement begins to rapidly increase. There was already a noticeable uptick in activity from mid-August and this trend usually continues as we begin to head into the warmer seasons.
In this edition of Standing Out, we look at the importance of landscaping and how a well-thought-out and maintained garden can add to your home and property value. When planning home improvements and renovations, many homeowners focus solely on internal work and neglect the garden, only considering it at the very end.
DIRECTOR’S LETTER Nick
The September Edition also focuses on flowers, amongst other interesting topics, which we hope you will enjoy. Gaertner FRANK SOUTH AFRICA

Our concept of ‘working ecology into the cultural landscape’ explores the connection to ‘Place’ and the tradition of living off the land. The design turned a narrow sloping site into distinct terraces representing three spatial realms. A curved pathway takes visitors on a visual journey through the forested play areas, the woodland gathering spaces and the wild meadow – replanted with critically endangered renosterveld. A resilient water management design references the historic farm systems in the valley with recreational streams, channels, weirs and dams. A Verdant Suburb of Streams & Green Belts
Tokai is known for its large homes, with lovely mature gardens, separated by treelined avenues.
Green belts comprising pine plantations and streams running through the suburb play home to frogs and insects while hosting dog walkers, mountain bikers, trail runners and picnickers. Tokai Park is home to the shady Arboretum to the south of Constantia on Tokai Road, forming the base of most hiking trails. While most of the wine farms that originally occupied the area are no longer there, a few old Cape Dutch houses remain.

SCULPTURES
At Steenberg Estate, the sculptures of Edoardo Villa – monumental and brutally modern metalworks painted in bold colours –are set in an environment that is hundreds of years old. The juxtaposition of contemporary art and Cape Dutch architecture is both startling yet eye-catching and original. Rabbits do not have to be Beatrix Potter style. You can add a modern rabbit to your garden setting with whimsical success. Sculptor Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe, who created the evocative ‘Walking the Road’ series that was set up on the Sea Point Promenade a few years ago, has also produced some very pertinent figures in bathing costumes that seem perfect for a swimming pool Sometimes, setting. the simplest idea can greatly enhance the visual interest of your garden. In a small gem of a garden that I worked on in Constantia, there are no gutter downpipes. Instead, delightful works of art in copper carry the rainwater gently from the roof to the garden, splashing through a series of flower cups.
Perhaps the most maligned embellishment for the garden is the garden gnome – that brightly painted concrete manikin so often found in suburban gardens, peering out from the rockery. But they do speak to us of a universal desire we share to enhance our gardens in some personal manner that goes beyond plans and good design.
Never look at a blank wall without giving it some thought as to how you could enhance it and create interest. My mantra is always style, function and interest. Add interest, always add interest.

If you have ever visited the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden in Stellenbosch, you will appreciate the huge impact his pieces have on the environment. From his finely realistic animal sculptures, he has branched out into solid forms that reflect and echo the powerful crags of the mountains that provide the backdrop to his garden.
A little bit of digging and you will find blacksmiths, carpenters, ironmongers, stonemasons, sculptors, furniture makers and specialist shrub and tree growers who can provide you with those extra touches that give your property pedigree and a sense of history; permanence with features of special interest.
Once you have spent a respectable amount on design and landscaping, the most important thing you can do is to maintain the intrinsic quality of your space by not adding unworthy accoutrements or embellishments.
There are numerous ways in which you can add to your garden and here individuality is the key. Avoid off-the-shelf items that you might have liked in your neighbour’s garden which would add little to the spirit of your Landscapingproperty. and design have huge rewards. But beyond that, over the years, I have learnt an enormous amount from my clients, their tastes and what they want from their gardens. What they add to their gardens. There is a special energy in that and one learns all the Itime.am never pedantic, but we always hand over a project and walk away with a sense of completion and fulfilment. However, that is just the beginning because every garden benefits from individual enhancement. It takes time and energy, but it is possible to find antique, decorative items such as urns, wrought ironwork, or architectural bits and pieces. If you cannot find historic pieces, rather think special commissions and specialised craftsmen and artisans – after all your garden is unique and just as with your interiors it should speak of who you are.
POTS Steer clear of plastic pots and planters and do not be tempted to buy every pot you see in the nursery. Instead, procure a few of the biggest pots you can afford and make a bold statement with quality pieces in terracotta or porcelain.
FURNITURE Classic styles seldom date. Believe it or not, the famous Lutyens bench was designed as far back as 1902 and is still a firm favourite in many stylish gardens. Outdoor furniture made from hardwoods such as Iroko can be an excellent asset. Again, why not approach reputable furniture makers for something tailored to your tastes?
STATEMENT PLANTS
Nothing gives a garden a greater sense of permanence and history than full-grown trees and shrubs. If you did not inherit these with your home, consider truly launching out by buying and planting large and well-established trees and shrubs. These might need craning into your property but the wonderful way in which they can elevate your space is certainly worth the effort and cost. Mature olive trees found at nurseries are extremely popular for adding a sense of
Standing Out Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2022 history, but you can also relocate your own established plants from one part of your garden to another where they will perhaps make a stronger statement. I have done this in a client’s garden where we relocated a Pride of India that is now a focal point next to a pool. Before it was sculking forlornly in the Thesebackyard.are merely a couple of ideas to enhance your outdoor spaces – a journey that is bound to bring ample satisfaction and creative Statementenjoyment. trees and plants to consider investing in to enhance your property include Chinese magnolias or Southern magnolias, camellias, Hong Kong orchid trees and rhododendrons which have aged and are available in large plant sizes – not to mention gunneras, ginkgos, Japanese maples and the common beech tree. 18
MIRRORS There is great interest these days in adding mirrors into garden design. Strategically placed, these can truly enhance the sense of space in a small courtyard or draw in borrowed views from your surroundings. Combining mirrors and fountains can again add enormously to the attraction of your property. METALWORK Nothing cries individuality more than a custom-designed and crafted metal or wooden garden gate, pergola, rose arch or stair handrail. Instead of sourcing mass-produced items, seek out a craftsman, share your vision and perhaps even incorporate the name or initials of your property into the design.
In this same garden, a satyr’s head acts as a tiny receptacle for a succulent plant and large gunnera are planted in metal work containers. Small details, but these all enhance the quality of the Perhapsscene.have a gander at the wire creations of a roadside artist and pick out a goose or even a rotund pig to add a sense of movement to your lawn. Small details can make a huge impact.

FLOWERS With summer just around the corner, there is so much you can do to enhance your garden’s appeal by taking advantage of flowering plants – be they small annuals, flowering shrubs, roses or flowering trees. Hedges, lawns, pathways and water features all give the garden structure, but nothing softens with gentle appeal like a few swathes of flowers. To give your pots quick and instant life, choose petunias, geraniums, pentas, echinaceas, phloxes, blanket flowers and mini chrysanthemums. In beds with more space, plant irises, gauras and salvias. They are great for filling beds as well as providing attractive Andflowers.there is nothing quite as attractive and façade-enhancing as climbing roses arched around your front door. THE VALUE OF FLOWERS
21 SUE BOND INTERIORS
– Terri Guillemets –
Flowers are incredible living things. Day after day, they brighten up the natural world around us without fail. Some lasting only for one season, others returning for more.
A garden featuring blooms is significant in more ways than one. For starters, any additional colours give it an aesthetic edge while floral scents engage one further. The other factor flowers bring into play ‘A flower’s appeal is in its contradictions — so delicate in form yet strong in fragrance, so small in size yet big in beauty, so short in life yet long on effect.’
Sue Bond Interiors
Whether presented in a bouquet or a single blossom, they have the power to instantly lift one’s mood. They can also inspire creativity, evoke love and transport one to different places… A true gift to the senses. So why do we not invite them into our lives on a larger scale? After all, they range from delicate to robust, muted to vibrant, smooth to velvety, petite to gigantic – and there are shapes, sizes, textures, aromas and colours to suit all tastes and requirements. Some are even edible… Of course, with the help of artists, flowers have also been eternalised – on canvas, wallpaper, ornaments, crockery and fabrics, the last-named gracing interiors on curtains, cushion slips and upholstery. With all of this in mind, here are a few ways to have a more beautiful life with flowers.
Flowers in the Garden
A Beautiful Life with Flowers

When it comes to displaying your selected blooms and cuttings, let your imagination go. For interesting presentations combine small and large vessels, in all shapes and colours and play with varying heights on multiple Remembersurfaces.the bedroom. A gorgeous arrangement on your nightstand is highly underrated, but what a way to start the day!
Culinary Enhancements
Flowers in the home make a meaningful difference, whether it is a subtle showcase of delicate baby’s breath or a large vase filled with vibrant lilies. In fact, research shows that flowers can have a positive impact on mental health.
For many, a love affair with food is affected by the full experience – which entails everything from glassware and crockery to table runners and serviettes, lighting and music to the actual aromas and tastes of the cuisine. So why not feed all the senses fully… and not just on special occasions. Incorporate a tablecloth, napkins or plates adorned with floral prints for everyday enjoyment, for inside and al fresco settings. Add a vase or two with fresh flowers to the display. Garnish the appetiser, the dessert or both with a blossom.
When it comes to decorating inventive dishes and sweet treats, flowers can be exceptionally impactful. There are several edible varieties to choose from and almost endless options for adorning creations with artificial florets if a chef or cake decorator is involved.

Not only is it an effortless way to infuse a room with positivity and texture, but it has lasting Thenvalue. again, it does not mean you cannot change it as often as you would like. So, do not be afraid to play with wallpaper and revel in all the possibilities.
How could we forget art and ornaments?
Floral Fabrics Fabric presents a world of possibilities –from bedding and blankets to cushion slips and curtains, not to mention upholstery… Dare to be bold!
Did we mention beverages? After all, a gin and tonic table is not complete without petals for garnish or infusion. Even water jugs can be transformed with a colourful accompaniment.
Art & Ornaments
If you are not already an anthophile, we hope this piece has at least inspired you to see flowers in a different light. May you have a wonderful spring!
Artists such as Riaan Bosch, Olivier, Martin de Kock and Trish Mitchell frequently incorporate flowers into their work, each in a unique and memorable way. Another advantage is that paintings can be moved around from time to time and used to add intrigue to different spaces. Ornamental pieces, purely for display or multifunctional ones, offer an easy way to add floral touches to interior areas. One intricate signature piece, for example, can make all the difference in a room that is perhaps more minimalist in other senses.

It was first played competitively in Melrose, Scotland in 1883 when Mr. Ned Haig, the local butcher and Melrose RFC player, organized a tournament with seven players on each side playing for seven minutes per half. To raise funds, Melrose RFC held a "Sports Day" that included foot races, a drop-kick challenge, a dribbling contest, a place-kicking shoot-out, and the seven-a-side competition as the main event.
The first iteration of the tournament featured a roster of eight teams, and the home side, Melrose RFC, walked off victorious. In the final, they triumphed over Gala RFC and were awarded a trophy known as the "Ladies Cup," which was graciously donated by the “Ladies of Melrose”. Since the first competition in 1883, the Melrose Cup has been played annually, attracting teams from all over the world.
The game of sevens had humble beginnings which belie its status as the major international sport we know today.

39 SEVENS RUGBY
Sevens has always been popular for fitness and skills training during the fifteen-man off-season but in the 1970s it emerged as a standalone sport for specialists in this version of the oval ball game. In 1976, after the energetic involvement of the South African expat, Tokkie Smith, the inaugural Hong Kong Sevens was announced as the first major international premier-level tournament. Its status became legendary and drew fancifully costumed crowds from all over the world to the bustling and booming colonial outpost. With the HK 7s as its flagship, the sport’s popularity continued growing and in 1993 the first Sevens World Cup was held in Edinburgh.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games gold is held by South Africa’s Blitzboks with Fiji as the runner-up. No team can achieve greatness without a brilliant coach and in this, both New Zealand and South Africa have been highly fortunate. In South Africa’s case both Paul Treu and Neill Powell are the recognized masters but 12-time world champion Sir Gordon Tietjens, who was knighted for his services to the sport, is the undisputed star of this select group. Some enjoyable reads on Sevens Rugby are “Sevens Heaven: The Beautiful Chaos of Fiji's Olympic Dream”, “Tokkie Smith and the Colour of Rugby: Creating the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens”, and “BlitzBoks - Rugby Sevens In South Africa: A History, 1904-2019”. These are available in audio or paperback form. From the 9th-11th of December, South Africans will flock to Green Point Stadium as the RWC Sevens is again hosted in Cape Town. The Blitzboks currently top the tour log followed by Australia and Argentina in second and third places. Six years later the World Sevens Series came into existence. The circuit featured between seven and 11 international tournament stops and accommodated 15 core teams. The competing sides accumulate points based on where they finish in each tournament. Until 2009 the official version was played by men only but was then opened to women’s sides with their own league. In 2016 Sevens became an Olympic sport, with Fiji taking the first-ever gold medal, England silver, and South Africa bronze. The 2020 Olympics in Japan were overshadowed by the pandemic, but Fiji retained gold with New Zealand and Argentina snagging the minor awards.

Mammals of Our Ocean
The Southern Cape coast is blessed to have records of 13 species, either as residents or regular callers. Of these, the legendary Indian and Atlantic bottlenoses are seen the most.
Those of us who live at or visit the seaside will often have seen whales, dolphins, and seals and have wondered about the populations and species of these endearing animals. The most plentiful, the Cape fur seal is thought to number more than 1 million while orcas may only be spotted once or twice a year in very select locations. Locally, the two most famous specimens are known by their floppedover dorsal fins, the one leaning leftward is Starboard and the one to the right is Port. Their occasional hunting area is centred on False Bay but in mid-2022 a small pod was seen near Mossel Bay where they were preying on white sharks that generally flee when they sense the killer whales’ presence.
Anyone with access to an ocean viewing spot will from time to time report vast pods travelling to and from their feeding grounds. These wonderful creatures will often stay just beyond the breakers but well within sight of folk strolling on the beach. On a lucky day you’ll see them catching rides in the waves, joyously out and about having fun.
65 MAMMALS OF OUR OCEAN
The top 12 destinations are Arniston, Cape Agulhas (the most southerly tip of Africa), Gansbaai, Gordon’s Bay, Simons Town, Hout Bay, Yzerfontein, Saldanha Bay, Paternoster, Elands Bay, and Lambert’s Bay. The epicentre is Hermanus with its world famous Whale Festival that in 2022 will take place from the 22nd of September till the 2nd of October.
Fewer than a thousand orca sightings have been reported near the Cape coast and most of these have been from fishing boats. So, seeing one is a very special event. Historically, whale and seal harvesting contributed significantly to the regional economy, but as the public became increasingly concerned about these practices the industries were curtailed and eventually succumbed to changes in legislation and other pressures. The earliest whaling station was on Plettenberg Bay’s Beacon Island while others were at Stony Point near Hermanus and Donkergat on the Langebaan lagoon peninsula just beyond the beautiful village of Churchhaven. The Southern Right was hunted almost to extinction because it was a source of both oil and baleen. The former was used for fuel and lighting and the latter to stiffen ladies’ undergarments and bustles. Fortunately, their numbers have recovered, and the population now exceeds a sustainable thirteen to fourteen thousand individuals.
No telling about storied sea creatures would be complete without touching on the most iconic of all, the dolphins and porpoises.
The whale species that regularly pass by are the Minkes, Bryde’s, and Humpbacks but the most common visitors are the Southern Rights that make their appearance towards the end of winter. Their arrival and sojourn are boons to the tourist industry with numerous whale-watching operations catering to tourists all along the coast. The Whale Route takes travellers through the whale-watching hotspots of the Western Cape. Besides the beauty and plenitude of its terrestrial fauna and flora, it isn’t widely known that the oceans of the Western Cape provide a home for representatives of almost half the world’s marine mammal species. Most are not endemic but migrate to and from the coast following seasonal patterns. The Indian and Atlantic seaboards boast more than 30 recorded marine mammal species that fall into two taxonomic groups: the cetaceans, including the whales, dolphins, and porpoises and the pinnipeds, which include the seals.

The Ancient Practice of Sharing Flowers
What better time to read about flowers?
The passing of chilly days reveals glimpses of nature’s gifts, and the advent of Spring unveils a world full of promise. From new leaves glowing greenly, bees buzzing, and the calls of courting birds to the most vibrant of all, the pleasure of blossoms and blooms emerging everywhere.
As early as 2,500 BCE, Egyptians depicted flowers, particularly the lotus, being used for bouquets and decorations. Their highly stylized arrangements adorned triumphal processions, marriage ceremonies, and burials, or appeared simply as table decor.
South Africa’s abundance of floral riches has been informally appreciated for centuries.
Standing Out Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2022 68
Few cultures do not revere the symbolism and beauty of even a single fresh stem gracefully displayed and none more so than through the Japanese art of ikebana. With its three principles of “line”, “mass”, and “colour” and the fifty rules of Sogetsu, this represents one of the highest expressions of anthophilia (loving flowers) ever crafted.
Flowers for Spring
Murals and carved stone reliefs both feature depictions of floral arrangements. Flowers were selected based on their symbolic significance with a particular emphasis on their religious overtones. Isis was revered and often depicted surrounded by sacred plants, these being roses, papyrus, narcissus, and water lilies. In their funerary rites, the tombs of antiquity were decked with garlands of anemones, poppies, blue scilla, and irises, and other floral devotions to speed the departed’s spirit on its way.
FLOWERS FOR SPRING
It’s even boasted that the Dutch have earned more revenue from our indigenous bulbs, than we did from gold. Yet, according to the director of the South African Flower Export Council (SAFEC) Jac Duif, South Africa’s organized flower industry was only established near Johannesburg in 1944. Before this, flower growers and sellers would exhibit and sell their products from tables rented at the municipal market. Established in 1948, the largest flower market in Africa is still Multiflora in Johannesburg. During the early years, the majority of cut flowers were cultivated as bulbs including the indigenous gladioli, the imported daffodils, tulips, and purple-blue iris. But endless varieties, including marigold, larkspur, candytuft, and belladonna delphinium were also on offer. Although the organized floral industry in South Africa was conceived in Johannesburg, for 155 years Trafalgar Place, just off Adderley Street, has been known as Cape Town’s Mall of Flowers. Once owned by a local farmer, the site was bequeathed in perpetuity to the families who have run the market since the beginning. Many of these little businesses are generational. Grandparents, moms, dads, aunts, uncles, and cousins, all worked together at this vibrant market and passed down the knowledge that allows it to thrive today. The busiest day of the year for the flower sellers' is always Valentine's Day, when Trafalgar Place is filled with gorgeous bouquets, with roses as the centrepiece. The florists there do much more than hawk flowers, they also create bonds with customers that last for decades while sharing stories of the present and past to carry forward the traditions passed down through generations.

The Symbolism of Flower Colours
Blue According to legend, calm blue exudes openness and serenity. A bouquet of blue flowers is a reminder to relax and de-stress. Lavender Representing grace, refinement, youth, and elegance; even when included in a distinctly modern bouquet, lavender flowers have an elegant, feminine, and vintage feel to them.
71
Orange This is not for wallflowers; fiery orange is passion-filled and vital. These blooms evoke enthusiasm, excitement, and exuberance. Pink Gentle light pink tones convey kindness, joy, and love. It is the quintessential feminine colour that represents grace and innocence.
Red Red is the colour of love and romance because it is vivacious, passionate, and demands attention. Red flowers also represent courage, respect, and loyalty. White A bouquet of white flowers can be either strong and brilliant or soft and modest, from the bold arum lily to the shy daisy they express purity, humility, innocence, and deep empathy.
Yellow Yellow is the colour of exhilaration. It stands for the bonds of friendship, the satisfaction of achievement, and pride. Since yellow is said to arouse joy, homes, or offices with vases of golden chrysanthemums or sunflowers will be happy ones. Clever florists create complex codes by matching assortments and use them to convey the desired message. When you receive or order a bouquet again, take a moment to consider the meaning hidden in the selection and hues. So, celebrate Spring with a delightful assortment of fresh blooms to share with colleagues, friends, or loved ones. You’ll be spreading light, colour, joy, and many perfumed moments of warmth and appreciation.
In the language of flowers, each type and colour whispers secrets; one bouquet gently comforts the soul during bleak moments while another announces devotion and love.
FLOWERS FOR SPRING
Purple A symbol of royalty, success, and tradition. A bouquet of purple flowers can represent adoration and admiration and a bunch of glorious gladioli is fit for an emperor.

INVESTING IN ART
A Unique Perspective by Visionary Proprietor Dijonne du Preez of the Gallop Hill Gallery Collection
Art sales are often seasonal and this year they have come early. Exciting news for passionate curators such as Dijonne du Preez – proprietor of the Gallop Hill Gallery Collection with investment art galleries in Franschhoek, Plettenberg Bay and Hermanus. Dijonne, however, is not your average art collector and curator. He is a very approachable, laid-back individual who loves to surf when not looking for incredible pieces and their makers. For him, investment art has personal value and he therefore approaches acquisitions and exhibitions with a fresh perspective. For starters, all of the pieces showcased in Dijonne’s galleries are owned by him initially. Handpicked for the aesthetic pleasure they provide, not the potential financial gains. A strategy that has been immensely successful for him and one that works for his clients. Buying art purely for investment purposes is a long-term pursuit because of the lack of liquidity. The value of art is not determined by the stock market and often you have to wait until someone is willing to pay what you hope or expect to receive. If you are interested in this avenue, the recommendation is to foremost look for originals – one-off creations by exclusive artists. In other words, purchase a masterpiece that has a track record.
77 INVESTING IN ART
Standing Out Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2022 78 High-quality prints are an option as well, especially if you are looking for a more accessible way into the market. Of course the fewer prints there are available of a particular piece, the more valuable they are. Using disposable income is another helpful piece of advice. One also has to look at an artist’s reputation. While social media has done wonders for some, it has also been detrimental to many artists’ careers. They are still humans who have to make a living and there are good times and bad times. Selling during less ideal circumstances can significantly, sometimes permanently, affect the future value of their art.
Renowned Investment Artists
Another tip is to ignore the name on the wall and simply look at the piece in front of you. If you love it, it becomes the best investment for you. The return on investment is the aesthetic value it has for you. Then again, if you are in a Gallop Hill Gallery, everything you will see is of investment value. As with many professional client relationships in life – be it with your broker, real estate agent, interior designer, landscaper or art dealer – there needs to be a shared level of comfort, connection and trust. In this case, it also helps to get to know and find curators who enjoy the same art as you. This is the type of relationship Dijonne has with his clients, most of whom are regular investors. The works they procure for their homes gain additional value attributed to their peers’ interest. Most often, these are the individuals who invest in that particular artist next. In essence, for Dijonne, it is all about what YOU love as an art admirer and investor. This should drive your purchasing decisions.

Dijonne exclusively deals with originals and prefers the following mediums, in this order: oil, acrylic, watercolour, charcoal, pencil and prints. When it comes to oil, the return on investment is always satisfactory. Sculptures in bronze are first prize, followed by other components, with supply and demand factored into consideration. Before embarking on your investment art journey, Dijonne believes it is truly advantageous to visit as many galleries as possible and look at a large variety and quantity of work. It takes consistent ongoing exposure to start recognising quality work. He is not one to judge artists, as those who make an effort to create and are willing to put their work out there deserve respect. But you are allowed to decide what you like; what makes you feel good, intrigued or interested.

Trees are treasures and givers of life. The largest plants on earth, they instil calm, evoke awe, gift us oxygen, take carbon dioxide from the air, keep the soil intact and support the planet’s wildlife. of Trees to Woody Perennials
The Secret Whispers
an Ode
It is no wonder then that throughout history trees have been associated with life and growth, wisdom and prosperity. In fact, they are believed to have been in existence for 370 million years, silently witnessing the evolution of the planet and humans, linking the past, present and future. They enable us to create, purchase and use the things we need and think we want – from toys, utensils and musical instruments, to impressive water vessels and warm shelters. In fact, we should be more mindful of their contribution to our daily lives and incorporate it into our consumer behaviour.
Two of what are considered to be the oldest trees on earth are thought to be older than the Egyptian pyramids. One is a Great Basin bristlecone pine called Methuselah in eastern California, estimated 4,853 years old, according to tree-ring data. The other is Alerce Milenario or Gran Abuelo (greatgrandfather), a Patagonian cypress in Chile. Tree Symbolism There are many cultural values and symbolic functions ascribed to different trees. Here are a few trees and their meanings.
We highly recommend The Boy and The Tree by Marleen Lammers and The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, New York Times bestselling author of Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic. The Boy and the Tree A sad little boy climbs up a hill, unhappy because he does not have the shiny new toys that other children seem to have. But something magical happens when a mighty old tree on the top of the hill starts to talk to the boy. Better still, the tree takes him on a series of adventures to space and strange lands, with wonderful creatures and so much fun. This tale of rhyming verse will encourage young readers in the age group 5 – 8 years to use their imaginations and experience these adventures too, spurred on by the colourful, quirky and beautiful illustrations. The Giving Tree So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another’s capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk… and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation.

Looking for a Good Tree-related ForRead?Adults We highly recommend The Overstory by Richard Powers • New York Times Bestseller • Shortlisted for the 2018 Man Booker Prize • Winner of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction • A New York Times Notable Book and a Washington Post, Time, Oprah Magazine, Newsweek, Chicago Tribune, Kirkus Reviews and Amazon Best Book of the Year
The Overstory is a sweeping, impassioned work of activism and resistance that is also a stunning evocation of – and paean to – the natural world. From the roots to the crown and back to the seeds, Richard Powers’s twelfth novel unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fables that range from antebellum New York to the late twentiethcentury Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. There is a world alongside ours – vast, slow, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive and almost invisible to us. This is the story of a handful of people who learn how to see that world and who are drawn up into its unfolding catastrophe.

Flower Season in West Coast National Park
Standing Out Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2022 82
A Haven for Wild Blooms & Wildlife
The West Coast National Park, a mere 90 minutes’ drive from Cape Town City Centre, stretches from Yzerfontein to Langebaan. It sits just inland from Saldanha Bay’s secluded harbour, with the turquoise waters of the Langebaan Lagoon as its focal point.
TIP: Be sure to visit on a sunny day as flowers may not be fully open on cloudy occasions. Also, weekdays are far less crowded in the park. Come lunch time, Langebaan is a great place to sit down and enjoy coastal cuisine in a tranquil, picturesque setting.
While wildflowers can be seen throughout the year to some extent, the flower season typically peaks from August to September every year in the most magical way.
Visitors may even spot passing whales and dolphins while exploring the park.
Wildlife can be found throughout the rest of the reserve as well, so be on the lookout for Eland, Red Hartebeest, Cape Grysbok, Cape Mountain Zebra, Caracal, Cape Grey Mongoose, Dassie and the Angulate Tortoise.
83 FLOWER SEASON IN WEST COAST NATIONAL PARK
A wide variety can be soaked up, especially at the Seeberg Lookout Point and in the Postberg section, the latter of which is characterised by large areas of blooms. The Postberg area in particular is praised for its bright displays of wildflowers – from yellows, oranges and reds to purples. This section is also a great place for spotting game but is only open to the public during the flower season.
Other activities on offer include picnicking (try Tsaarsbank, a braai area by the sea), birdwatching (look for Curlew Sandpiper, Grey Plover, Sanderling, Black Harrier and Great White Pelican), mountain biking and hiking. The park even has bird hides should you wish to pause for sightings.

The index, which tracks the movement in prime residential prices, defined as the top 5% of the housing market in value terms, saw annual price growth decline from 10% in Q1 2022 to 7.5% in Q2 2022. However, so far the story is one of lower rates of growth, not falling prices. The number of cities registering a fall in prices in the year to Q2 2022 is the same as last quarter – just six. But 19 of the cities tracked (42%) saw their rate of annual price growth decline between March and June 2022. Rising mortgage rates and a weakening global economic outlook are cooling some of the ebullience of the last two years, but the slowdown will be felt most in lower price brackets and domestic-driven markets. Auckland, Wellington, Toronto and Stockholm registered some of the largest declines in annual price growth. Overall, Dubai leads the annual rankings with growth of 64.8%. Asia, an outlier during the pandemic with only muted growth, has not only seen its strongest performers, Seoul and Tokyo, strengthen further but the luxury segment in some Chinese cities (Shenzhen, Beijing) and Indian markets (Mumbai) are showing signs of recovery. In Europe, Berlin (12.6%), Dublin (10.2%), Edinburgh (11.2%) and Paris (8.9%) are out in front as the appeal of urban living strengthens and international travel resumes.
The winds of change are blowing through global property markets, including the prime sector.
