SPHERE AFLAME By Danielle Lacharite Brown

Last spring, Artist Doris Sung and I had a fun chat about a YouTube video featuring a painstaking art project sped up for the convenience of the viewer. The protagonist wanted to see if he could build a perfect sphere by layering match sticks atop one another. One by one the matches were stacked, and, in a YouTube minute, a warbled sphere formed before our eyes. The conversation was sparked by Sung’s latest project, a commission to provide a new permanent sculpture for our Garden generously funded by South Coast Botanic Garden Trustee, Marilyn Long and the Long Family Foundation. Like the matchstick ball, Fuller is a sphere made of many parts. Fuller has been formed from 180 pieces of thermobimetal and 420 pieces of aluminum that have been heated to just the right temperature to “pop” into place with interlocking shapes that allow the sphere to hold strong. The material is of the utmost importance to Sung, a professor of Architecture at USC who enjoys the challenge of tinkering with new materials. “I am interested in how geometric experimentation can inform kinetic architecture. My pursuit has been to make provocative objects and spaces with dynamic surfaces and to inspire others to think differently about architecture.” Sung notes that the material can also be used to craft eco-friendly buildings that react to high temperatures by shifting to create internal shade. The theme, shape and color are all nods to the Garden’s sustainable mission, with reference to our blue planet. Of course, the installation may also evoke thoughts of a Victorian gazing ball. The sculpture’s title is a reference to Buckminster Fuller, a 20th century architect known for his popularization of the geodesic sphere. Like Sung, Fuller tested new materials and shapes for higher efficiencies in architectural design and theory. Fuller will be installed this fall in the Mediterranean garden with a public celebration on September 16 at noon. 17 | southcoastbotanicgarden.org
