CEO Message Adrienne L. Nakashima, CEO GARDENING AS A TEAM SPORT
Credit: DK Foto
Around the office, I am often known for making sports references. Having received an advanced degree in sports management and eventually spending a portion of my career in the business, I suppose the analogies can’t be helped.
As a lifelong athlete who has endured her share of trainings and competitions, I have also come to appreciate what it means to be part of a team. Perspective can be gained when you’ve been a player, the coach and team manager. As this message goes to print, Angelinos are awaiting the outcome of a long-awaited chance for the Dodgers to capture the National League Championship. And one cannot mention the Los Angeles Dodgers without thinking back to its famed history – from its start in Brooklyn, to their signing of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play for a Major League Baseball team, and to their eventual move to Los Angeles. I grew up in Los Angeles remembering the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 1980s when “Fernandomania” swept the city and pitching sensations like Fernando Valenzuela and Orel Hershiser were household names. Another well-known figure who is often discussed when you talk about the Los Angeles Dodgers is its two-decades long manager of the team, Tommy Lasorda. Lasorda is known for his colorful personality and outspoken opinions regarding players and others associated with baseball. He once said, “There are three types of baseball players: Those
who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened.” I think it is safe to say that we all want to be in the “those who make it happen group.” From our leadership and Board of Trustees, to the staff, our members and our volunteers – I feel like those of us on “Team South Coast Botanic Garden” are here to make things happen. We couldn’t think of “making it happen” without an all-star lineup. A welcome addition to the team are two key individuals to our leadership - new Board Trustee President, Pamela P. Reis, and new Chief Operating Officer, MaryLynn Mack. I invite you to learn more about Pamela (Page 3) and MaryLynn (Page 4). Our team is also working tirelessly to provide memorable experiences and features that will keep our members and visitors returning season after season. If you’ve visited lately, you may have noticed our newly installed permanent art sculpture, Fuller, by Artist and USC Professor of Architecture, Doris Sung. The unique geodesic dome is formed from 180 pieces of thermobimetal and 420 pieces of aluminum that have been heated to just the right temperature to “pop” into place with interlocking shapes that allow the sphere to hold strong. This commissioned work was made possible by the generous gift of South Coast Botanic Garden Board Trustee, Marilyn Long and the Long Family Foundation. If you look closely at my photo, you’ll see it peeking from behind me. Better yet, make plans to see it in person. I also can’t help but point out it also happens to be the hue of Dodger Blue! As the team heads into a new season at South Coast Botanic Garden, we continue to “keep our eye on the ball” and look forward to events and activities that “hit it out of the park!”

TAKING THE GARDEN TO NEW HEIGHTS By Danielle Lacharite Brown
As part of this year’s initiative to “sweat the small stuff” at the Garden (a philosophy that will help to make our Garden a superb destination for everyone to enjoy), the team has been heading out on eye-sore scavenger hunts, coming back with fix-it lists and photos of spaces needing attention that are seemingly hiding in plain sight. One of the identified unsightlies was our tram shelter and vehicles, nooked behind the lush green Vegetable Garden and peeking through a tattered fence. Once we noticed the scar, we couldn’t un-see it. And, so, we began to devise a plan to consolidate and creatively hide the back-of-house equipment, while also forming a new western wall for our public garden. About this time we met a representative from Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust, an organization dedicated to supporting ornamental horticulture. After some discussion and a formal application, the Trust approved a sizable grant to partially fund a new vertical garden and challenged us to leverage the funds in order to secure what was necessary to build our 400 square foot wall.

masterpiece, the creation was made first on a computer screen and then transferred with a chalk grid to the first layer of the Seasons Aqua Felt system mounted to two new sturdy storage containers (which now help to formalize the perimeter of our garden). Like an oversized needlepoint project, a series of concentric circles has been “painted” on the structure by piercing holes into the felt and stuffing them with bare rooted plants. The planting palette includes dwarf ferns, aeoniium, and ripple jade, among others. Interestingly, the wall contains no soil, instead the plants are raised hydroponically, with a watering system that is built behind the felt structure. The final product is truly a work of art. On your next visit, take a stroll by the Living Wall Lounge and check out the new vertical garden.
Ever intrepid, we secured a generous sponsorship from Seasons Landscaping, a leader in the field of living walls, and ShrubHub, a new Online Garden Marketplace for plant procurement and garden design. The two sponsors agreed to subsidize the new amenity and a partnership was born. Scott Hutcheon, principle of both companies, was quick to sign on board with the project. “This was a no-brainer for us – this public showpiece to demonstrate the creativity that can be achieved vertically. The opportunity to work with South Coast Botanic Garden was just the right fit.” The wall has been erected in a new space dubbed “The Living Wall Lounge,” with space for guests to take respite and relax on nearby benches. MEET NEW BOARD TRUSTEE PRESIDENT, PAMELA P. REIS By Yumiko Whitaker
University of Pennsylvania, South Coast Repertory, Jack Kramer Club, and Norris Theatre for the Performing Arts. Beyond the above community and business experience, her sincere love of the Garden is evidenced not only by her service at this level, but by humble regular strolls and engagement with visitors out to enjoy our beautiful space.

A life marked by service to others, coupled with a successful career in the corporate sector, makes Pamela P. Reis, a well-suited and welcome addition as the leader of the Garden’s esteemed Board of Trustees. Pamela’s new role comes on the heels of highly active service as the Board’s Chair of the Governance Committee (2015, 2016), dual service on the Executive and Finance Committees (2017-2018), and service as Treasurer the same year (2017-2018). No stranger to seamless management of multiple areas of responsibility, her resume reads like a who’s who in the business world with decades long experience in the financial sector. Her last role was as Executive Vice President and Area Manager in charge of 93 branches in the SoCal area at First Interstate Bank of California before retiring in 1996. She rose through the ranks by delivering solid results in Operations, Retail Banking and Marketing. Prior to her ascent, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and has taken numerous graduate level courses at the Wharton School of Business and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. Much like our vast 87-acre Garden, Pamela has an equally broad and varied community service background. In addition to efforts with our Garden, she serves in a volunteer leadership capacity with Planned Parenthood of L.A. Previous community service includes various leadership roles with Para Los Niños, South Bay Vocational Center, Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, the City of Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Community Association,

We look forward to your participation in future Garden events for the opportunity to meet and get to know Pamela, as we continue to move our vision forward. Please enjoy an excerpt from her address to the Board of Trustees upon being installed: “I am truly honored by this nomination and election. Thank you for your confidence. I want to recognize Pete Olpe’s service over the past four years as President and his service as Secretary for the prior three years. He has truly been an enthusiastic, dedicated, energetic and visionary leader. He has had a lasting impact on the Foundation and the Garden and I know we all are extremely grateful to him. I thought long and hard about accepting this nomination, as I know serving as head of this board is a big responsibility. I will take it very seriously. My actions will be guided by three primary duties: The Duty of Care, the Duty of Loyalty, and the Duty of Obedience. These three duties are the duties of all Trustees. In exercising our Duty of Care, we must ensure prudent use of all assets – our financial assets, the Garden itself, our people and our goodwill. The Duty of Loyalty requires us to ensure our activities advance our mission, that we recognize and disclose conflicts of interest, and all decisions we make are in the best interest of the Foundation. In exercising our Duty of Obedience, we must ensure we obey all applicable laws and regulations, follow our bylaws, and adhere to our stated mission. I am sure all of you who have served on not for profit boards are familiar with these duties, but I want to be sure we all keep them fresh in our mind. I can commit to you I will try my best to fulfill my duties as President. You will have my dedication and energy.”

It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome industry leader and trailblazer, MaryLynn Mack, as the Garden’s Chief Operating Officer. Simply put, MaryLynn is a steady builder – of consensus, of brick and mortar operations, of entities or endeavors that were nonexistent, of people. This high caliber, values-led individual comes to us from Desert Botanical Garden in Arizona where she served as Director of Operations, successfully managing day-to-day efforts for a nature space that welcomes over 380,000 visitors annually. During her tenure at this Phoenix Point of Pride, she expanded and enhanced programs for children, adults and educators that include new digital curricula, a multi-lingual audio tour, and the innovative “Volunteer U” program, a national model that recruits, retains, and recognizes volunteers. With a growth mindset, operational excellence, and people first imperative, MaryLynn led the development and construction of a destination restaurant, parking and event plaza, expanded renovated retail location and a DNA research lab. She leaves our friends at Desert Botanical positioned for further success with the recent completion of a five-year master plan for an innovative Children and Family garden space. With a commitment to serving others and building bridges of understanding, MaryLynn sits on the American Public Gardens Association Board of Directors, and is the inaugural Chair of the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility Committee. She is slated to give the keynote address to the Diversity Forum at the Association’s 2019 Annual Conference.
Prior to joining Desert Botanical, MaryLynn enjoyed successful careers as the Executive Director of the Rescue Mission’s Women and Children’s Center, and as Senior Director at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Upon relocating to Arizona, she continued her love of giving back and philanthropy as a founding member of the African American Women’s Giving and Empowerment Circle and as a Board Member at the Phoenix Metropolitan YWCA. Her efforts in women’s issues and arts and culture earned her the YWCA Tribute to Leadership and Black Philanthropy Institute Leadership awards. MaryLynn has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and is near completion of an Organizational Leadership degree. Additionally, she brings 22 years of staff management, strategic planning, project development, event services, guest services, facilities, maintenance, IT, human resources and community relations experience to compliment the talent bench of South Coast Botanic Garden. She is a past recipient of the Virginia G. Piper Fellowship, a graduate of The Getty Leadership Institute, and has also served in the U.S. Navy. “Having someone of MaryLynn’s caliber will bring greater depth of experience to the Garden to propel us forward,” says South Coast Botanic Garden CEO, Adrienne Nakashima. Her proven track record of thoughtful engagement and operational know how will aid us greatly as we endeavor to become one of the top botanic gardens in the Southern California region,” she adds. We look forward to officially welcoming MaryLynn as part of our senior leadership team in early January. She is a consummate professional who will make value-added contributions to the Garden by advancing our vision. We hope to host a Meet and Greet upon her arrival so you may have the opportunity to get to know her. Together, our future is very bright!
