CEO Message Adrienne L. Nakashima, CEO A Garden Of Stories This edition of the newsletter has made me particularly reflective, for it was nearly eight years ago in the summer of 2010 that I started as CEO. I look at the rich stories and events and cannot help but appreciate the Garden’s meaningful effect on the individual spirit. In these pages, you’ll read about a couple who began their lives together in matrimony on our Meadow. You’ll see the remarkable images that serve as a legacy for a dedicated photographer who we lost too soon. And you’ll be inspired by a member and volunteer, 91-years-young, who’s efforts to support the Garden continue through her personal philanthropy. I am sure each of you reading this has a personal story about the Garden. I know that I have my share. I got married and celebrated the birth of my two children during my tenure. I’ve gained a different perspective, seeing the Garden through their eyes as we explore the monthly Kids Club offerings as a family. My daughter, April, has even begun to relive our programming activities at home… arranging fairy homes in my mother’s backyard and crafting patterns from fallen rose petals on the grass.
As CEO, when things become stressful, I take a walk through our trails and take in the fresh air, revitalizing my energy and focusing my attention on what needs to happen next. I also get to meet members along the way. On last week’s walk I met two moms exploring the trails alongside us, Kindergarteners in tow. They discovered the Garden shortly after the birth of their children and used the space as a fitness destination with their infants. They’ve kept up the walks because the Garden has become part of their lifestyle and a reason to get together and “run off the energy of the kids.” I can imagine what their children’s stories will be years from now, how the nature moments will shape their futures. There are moments in the making every single day here at South Coast Botanic Garden and they remind me of why this place is so meaningful. I am inspired to work hard and make this the best possible place for our community. I look forward to seeing how your stories unfold in our trails and on our meadows all summer long!

The Garden shines brightly on the pages of this newsletter, thanks to a handful of dedicated members who submit photos for publication, snapped on nature walks within our gates. It is with great sadness that we learned one of our most prolific photographers, Tom Zimmerman, passed away this February. We are pleased to honor Tom’s legacy on these pages. Tom and his wife, Paula, took twice-weekly walks together at the Garden. Tom would take photos along the way while Paula served as photo scout. Armed with his Cannon, active wildlife and bright flowers would capture Tom’s eye. Photography was a hobby for Tom, though you wouldn’t know it by looking at his stunning professional shots. Close up views of botanicals,
splashing birds, and sweeping vistas were his trademark. It was always a point of pride to win the newsletter “cover contest.” Paula would frame the covers as a gift, and is proud to have six such frames donning the walls of their Rancho Palos Verdes home. Friends and family have made gifts to the Garden in celebration of Tom’s legacy.

Love in
Bloom by Lisa Wysocki
As a member of South Coast Botanic Garden, you are supporting an important environmental resource, a place for reflection, and often times, a destination for romance. The Garden bears witness to its fair share of happily ever-afters. In fact, our meadows are bustling with matrimonial activities almost every weekend. Chairs are being placed, lighting is being strung, and pre-ceremony jitters are being quelled all in the anticipation of the big “I do!” We thought it might be fun to highlight the love story of Tim and Amy, who married at the Garden on a sunny August day. Theirs is one of 93 unique stories that culminated in our Garden last year. When Tim enlisted as a Marine, his romance with Amy was just budding, though they’d been friends since college. Once shipped off to basic training, communications were so limited that the couple could only correspond via mail. Filled with kindness and thoughtful words, their love letters strengthened their connection. So much so, that as soon as Tim returned from boot camp, he proposed! The gesture of sending love letters would continue through deployments in Afghanistan and Japan. 5 | southcoastbotanicgarden.org
Amy asked her mother Joy to help with the planning. As a longtime Garden member, Joy knew this was the perfect place for her daughter’s wedding. She just loved the flexibility of the different event spaces and the fact that they didn’t need to add much for décor. But, Amy had dreams of big church doors and experiencing that moment of a reveal with her father. So, she came up with a unique solution.
The ceremony was held in the Lower Meadow, with the love letters displayed for all to see. To frame her entry, Amy passed through a set of free-standing doors handcarved by her father just for the occasion. The celebration continued with a festive reception on the Upper Meadow where they danced the night away. Tim and Amy’s love has grown to include a cat, Louie, and two dogs, Kona and Rambo. Tim is now working locally with no further deployments in sight and Amy is a marketing professional. On your next visit, take notice of our private celebrations and imagine the love stories being brought to life. Thanks to your support, the Garden is a place where memories are being made. Legendary Supporter By Audra Platz
Mary Lou Steinmetz’s adoration for South Coast Botanic Garden began more than 35 years ago. In fact, her commitment to the Garden is legendary, as one of the longestserving docents and volunteers. Her ongoing support is allowing the Garden to flourish in extraordinary ways. On a recent excursion with her daughters, Jeanie and Annie, Mary Lou shared why South Coast Botanic Garden means so much to her, “Gardens are life!” she said. “It’s that simple. Look at all the ways they give back to us.” Her beautiful sentiment is fitting to her spirit, as she expressed joy each time she spotted children playing in the Garden, “See, they are what it’s all about, they’re the future.” Mary Lou’s visit was to announce a special $100,000 gift in support of general operating costs that keep our guests feeling welcome and our operations sharp. Her gift will be recognized inside our new Garden for All Seasons, located inside the demonstration area. A symmetrically planted bed with splashes of seasonal color is already in place, and soon the space will be anchored with a show-stopping vertical garden wall that will hide the unsightly tram parking structure.
A Real Hoot By Danielle Lacharite Brown
The Garden is home to at least one nesting pair of great horned owls, likely the same couple who has been here for the last 10 years. The long-timers have set up shop in the “back 40 acres,” where they’ve found a quiet place to hatch their young and hunt for dinner. Member, Jeff Staton, has been keeping an eye on the family during his regular nature walks in the Garden. He snapped this terrific photo of two fluffy owlets perched on a eucalyptus tree in Alpine Lane. Likely born in February, the young began to test out their wings in early spring. With a keen eye, you too can catch a glimpse of them and their daily flight practice as they work their way back into their high nest. When you do, look overhead for Momma Owl, watching your every move. At your feet you will find the tell-tale pellets, parcels of undigested fur and bones from their last meal. 13 | southcoastbotanicgarden.org
