Since 2009, family memberships to South Coast Botanic Garden have increased significantly. At the end of fiscal year 2009, there were 1,422 family and senior family members. By the end of fiscal year 2014, we had 2,969. That is a 109% increase! With that dramatic change over the last five years, we were compelled to respond to the demand for programming that addressed the needs of our membership and the voices we were hearing from in the community. You have no doubt witnessed the variety of family-centered programs and special events that have increased over the last few years. This summer is no different as we gear up for a calendar of events full of interesting things for families and children of all ages to participate in. We hope you’ll join us for some of the many exciting things in our line-up including:

Famed essayist, poet and philosopher George Santayana once wrote, “The family is one of nature’s masterpieces.” At South Coast Botanic Garden, we are proud to serve as the canvas for these masterpieces. The focus on family has been a personal one for me as well. During my tenure, I have been able to expose my almost three year old to the wonders of the Garden and inspire a curiosity in her about the natural world. The pure excitement in her voice when the butterflies fly past her on our way to the Rose Garden or the delight in her eyes when she counts the fish in the Koi Pond are moments that memories are made of. I invite all of you to create your own family masterpiece at South Coast Botanic Garden.

SUMMER IN THE GARDEN 2015

The dog days of summer haven’t yet arrived, so the Garden is still bursting at the seams with growth and color. With all of this plant and people activity, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge a wonderful crew of staff, horticulturists, gardeners, maintenance technicians and skilled craft persons that maintain and improve the Garden that so many of us enjoy coming back to again and again. They work tirelessly, seven days a week, each week of the year, to make sure every visitor and their family has a safe and beautiful Garden experience. As we plant, prune, weed, feed and water 87 acres of trees, shrubs and specialty gardens, remove trash and service restrooms, we do it with extra care and attention to detail so that the Garden remains a place of beauty and fond memories. If you have a plant question and call the

Garden for help, it may be one of these garden experts who help you identify that tree, flower or bug. They are also the people out in the Garden that provide your kids with stories and interesting facts as they tour, play, learn and discover. In addition to our wonderful on-site staff, we couldn’t get through a week without experts in electrical, carpentry, plumbing, irrigation, pipe fitting, and other repairs that maintain the buildings and Garden infrastructure. We love what we do and hope it shows. Our goal is to provide you with the best visitor experience around. So next time you are visiting us, say hello, ask a question or just give us a wave as you enjoy the beauty and abundance of the Garden.

WE ARE DOING OUR PART! Water conservation efforts are in place and working at the Garden. We are currently under the same water-use restrictions as residential customers and are in compliance with the State Water Resources Control Board, statewide emergency water conservation regulations, California Water Service Company, Metropolitan Water District, and County of LA CEO mandates.

P h o to b y : To m Z im m e rm a n

Since 2003, our water use has decreased by approximately 20% due to implementing best management practices such as actively repairing broken valves and irrigation heads, making adjustments to irrigation schedules based on plant specific watering needs, using smart irrigation controllers and increasing the use of drought tolerant and CA native plants.

VOLUNTEER NEWS Have you noticed how incredible the roses are looking in the Rose Garden? Well this is all thanks to a dedicated crew of volunteers that prune and deadhead the roses year round. Last year, Betty Rodman, Martha Mallan, Hung F. Pan, and Junko Sasaki worked 376.25 hours in the Rose Garden tending to their needy charges. This past January, many volunteers from other work areas pitched in to double the work crew and offer their help and expertise so we could enjoy another incredible bloom this past spring. This wonderful display of color does not happen solely on its own. For this we thank all of the dedicated volunteers and honor them for their hard work and green thumbs.
