Kids’ Activity Guide Down by the barn, early in the morning, a farmer drives his tractor, stopping along the way to pick up a calf, then a chick, then a pig. The group of animals grows and grows until at last they reach their destination…and find a surprise. Down by the Barn will take your child on a charming journey to the farm. The farmer’s tractor puffs, clicks, and clanks all around the farm as it picks up farm animals for a special event. Adorable new farm friends join the farmer and add their voices to the story. The following activities will allow your child to explore the farm and the farm animals.
Pre-reading Questions 1. What is a farm? 2. Have you ever visited a farm? 3. What animals live on a farm? 4. What is your favorite farm animal? 5. Why are baby animals called by
different names than their parents?
6. What is a tractor? 7. What is your favorite animal sound? 8. What do farmers do?
Middendorf-Kredell: R
North County: T
South County: U
Spencer Road: V
WingHaven®: W
These questions will prepare your child for reading Down by the Barn and for completing the following activities.
My Farm Brainstorming/Story Activity: Your child will make a picture story about the farm. Give your child two sheets of paper, one for free drawing and one for their story. On the first sheet, let him/her draw pictures of their farm and the farm animals using crayons, colored pencils, and/or markers. Help your child brainstorm for things from the farm to draw. Fold the second sheet in half, both vertically and horizontally, making creases each way. Have your child draw a line on each of the crease marks. Help your child come up with and draw a comic-style story of their farm using the four squares. If your child wants to make it a longer story, simply fold another sheet of paper. Feel free to help your child write captions for their story.

“Fairless” Summer Reader Steals our Hearts This Summer the St. Charles City-County Library District staff was introduced to a very special little girl named Lylah Fairless. Out of nearly 20,000 participants, Lylah was chosen as a Summer Reading Grand Prize winner. A very excited young girl with $25 to spend on whatever she wanted, Library staff learned, was just the beginning of the story. On March 5, 2012, Lylah Fairless was born with a Large Congenital Nevus which covered 2/3 of her scalp. On the 5th day of their newborn’s life Ashley and Ian Fairless learned from the doctors at St. Louis Children’s Hospital that if the Nevus was not completely removed, Lylah would have a 40% chance of developing fatal Melanoma by the time she was 6. Early in June of this year, Ian arrived home after work and told Ashley that they needed to get out and do something as a family. They headed to the St. Charles City-County Library Kisker Road Branch where they signed both Lylah and her brother Lincoln up for Summer Reading. “I knew that the Library was the perfect place to take my family,” said Ian. “I grew up in St. Charles County using these great libraries. I wanted my children to learn to love the Library as much as I did.”

Each time a portion of the Nevus was removed, Lylah’s surgeon, did what is called a tissue expansion, where he implanted a temporary expander under Lylah’s scalp. “Every other day,” said Ashley, “we would inject saline into the area to stretch the skin. At the next surgery the doctor would remove another portion of the Nevus, and use the healthy stretched skin to cover Lylah’s head.” In the past 2 ½ years Lylah has had Watch her story at 13 surgeries and was hospitalized for staph youtube.com/YouranswerplaceStCh infections several times.
