Director’s Note

JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2017

As we begin a new calendar year, many of us will make New Year’s resolutions. In keeping with this long-standing tradition, here are a few St. Charles City-County Library District 2017 resolutions.

BRANCH LOCATIONS & PHONE NUMBERS

1. Continue to work to make all of our Library Branches comfortable and inviting places that customers enjoy visiting. Last fiscal year, just under 2 million people came through our doors. We are looking to top that number in FY 17.

L BOONE’S TRAIL BRANCH

#10 Fiddlecreek Plaza; New Melle - (636) 398-6200

2. Add even more digital options for our customers. As more of our customers shift to digital materials, the District will continue to add electronic materials to meet the demand.

M CORPORATE PARKWAY BRANCH

3. Take our message beyond our walls, so all St. Charles County residents will know that the Library is their space to Dream, Discover Connect and Grow.

O DEER RUN BRANCH

2017 promises to be a great year for the St. Charles City-County Library District. We have some exciting changes ahead, and we can’t wait to share them with all of you.

Members of the “Let’s Crochet and Knit” group gather each week at the Spencer Road Library to knit, crochet and enjoy each other’s company. The fruits of their labor of love are donated to people in need. Following is a note to the Library from the group organizer.

Making afghans, blankets, and caps for Cardinal Glennon NICU.

“This is the time of year we give thanks and express our appreciation. We are grateful to have a room at the Library to hold our sessions. The staff is always courteous and helpful in getting our room open, ready for the ladies, and answering all our questions. We appreciate and want to thank everyone at the Library who helps make our charities successful!”

Coming in January: Take up Something New

It’s been a little over a year since we combined our calendars into the bi-monthly guide you’re now holding. With many exciting changes on the horizon, we want to take this opportunity to ask how the calendar works for YOU! Please follow the link below to take a very short, anonymous survey that will provide us with valuable feedback to help us improve the bi-monthly guide and your overall Library experience.

Soup is my go-to comfort food in the cold months. Butternut squash gives soup creaminess without adding excess fat. It also contains potassium and Vitamin B6 to keep your immune system powering through cold and flu season! I visited Trish Farano from Dierbergs School of Cooking to shop for the ingredients for a delicious, easy, 5 ingredient soup. Ingredients: • 2 pounds butternut squash • 1 pound leeks • Chicken Broth • 1/3 cup dry white wine • Chives for garnish Directions: Place leeks in the bottom of a heavy 6 cup stockpot; place squash on top. Add stock and wine. Cover and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer until squash is tender, about 25 minutes. Cool 15 minutes; stir in salt and pepper. Puree in small batches or puree using an immersion blender; gently reheat as needed. Serve soup with a drizzle of half and half and garnish with fresh chives. Makes 6 servings Visit AskAlison.org to watch a video with more tips on making this soup.
