BRANCH LOCATIONS & PHONE NUMBERS

When I was a kid, I always looked forward to May. It meant the end of school and the beginning of summer vacation when I could read whatever I wanted. I was a voracious but eclectic reader and, although we did not have an organized summer reading program, I fondly remember my weekly summertime trips to the library. Summer was always an adventure with books as the means to explore other worlds, other times and other places.

L BOONE’S TRAIL BRANCH

#10 Fiddlecreek Plaza; New Melle - (636) 398-6200

Needless to say, I am very excited to introduce our Library’s 2016 Summer Reading Program “On Your Mark, Get Set… Read”. Summer Reading 2016 begins on May 23 and runs through August 1. The staff have done an amazing job of creating programs that incorporate this year’s activity and fitness theme. In the summer of 2015, more than 35,000 children, teens and adults participated in Summer Reading. We are hoping 2016 numbers will surpass this total. This year, for the first time, the Library will be offering the option of online registration for Summer Reading. This will make it easier for those who have limited ability to come into the Library to participate in the program. We will also be sending sign-up information to schools so that teachers and librarians can register students before they leave for the summer.

P KATHRYN LINNEMANN BRANCH

I hope you & your whole family will take the opportunity to join in the Summer Reading fun at the Library. Summer is a great time to build lasting memories. I hope reading will be one of yours.

“Dear Ask Alison, Can you recommend resources for vegan cooking for beginners? How do I stock my pantry? Where are some easy recipes? How can I find vegan restaurants in this area?” — Anna S. - Lake St. Louis

HISTORY/GENEALOGY

Thanks for the question Anna! Veganism has certainly moved into the mainstream recently. It could be because vegan and vegetarian diets, which are high in fiber and low in saturated fat, have been associated with lower obesity rates, lower blood pressure, lower risk for coronary artery disease, and lower diabetes risk.

P Tuesday, May 10

But even those who don’t adapt a completely vegan lifestyle can certainly benefit from eating meat-free once in a while. For a few basics tips on getting started, I went to the Library stacks and picked up some great vegan how-to’s and cookbooks. All books recommend eating tons of fruits, veggies, legumes, and plant-based proteins. Here are 5 of the universal vegan pantry essentials I found: 1. Nutritional Yeast is the by product of beet molasses. It can add a nutty or “cheese-like” taste to sauces, popcorn, and salad dressings. 2. Quinoa, any variety or color (there are over 120 types!), is high in protein and a versatile addition to soups, salads, and side dishes. 3. Apple Cider Vinegar, with “The Mother” is a must-have for dressings, soups, stir-fry’s and more. 4. Lentils are high in protein and can be used as a meat substitute in things like tacos, pasta, and casseroles. 5. Flax Seed, when ground and mixed with water, it is an easy egg-substitute when baking. For more info about restaurants, events, and the vegan lifestyle, you can visit the STL Vegan Blog at www.stlvegan.com. Good luck on your new vegan cooking adventure!
