176 SPRING CREEK ROAD, RUNNING CREEK
EDITOR'S LETTER
I recently rediscovered the joy of daydreaming. It’s something I hadn’t really thought too much about before, but as our household has grown and become, well, let’s be honest, more chaotic, I've found myself craving those moments alone. The luxury of an uninterrupted train of thought—wow! What a treat! So, I’ve started setting time aside for just me, activities such as cooking at home when the kids are at school, or taking a quiet afternoon walk. I’ve realised that for me to be connected with myself, my own thoughts, I have needed to make space for it—to allow my mind to wander and for ideas to come forth. In a world that prizes productivity and keeping busy, I don’t think we encourage this activity of daydreaming nearly enough.
Now for those of us who perfected this skill in school, daydreaming was often met with a teacher’s quick reminder to “stay on task.” And as a mother, I get it! There is a place in our lives for structure and focus, but as a creative, it does make me wonder—where would the world be if it weren’t for the daydreamers? I’m certainly not putting myself up there with the likes of Richard Branson or Sara Blakely (the inventor of women’s shapewear, Spanx), and thank goodness for Sara just quietly! Ha! But I do think every business owner and creative falls into this category, even if unknowingly. Every business is born from a wandering thought of “what if?” Even everyday solutions can come to us in the most unexpected moments.
I can actually pinpoint the exact moment when a daydream changed the course of my life—correction, our lives. I was 36, we had our first two children, we’d just sold our family farm, and we were preparing to move to the Scenic Rim—a place where both my husband and I had connections and had even crossed paths as teens without realising it (that’s another story). Back to my daydreaming: I was doing laundry—of all things, my most loathed household chore—when my mind wandered off. The urge to find something we could truly sink our teeth into was growing stronger with each year, and as I stood there, knee-deep in loads of laundry, the house a mess with moving boxes, I remembered a childhood memory: my mum and dad showing me the pages of a UK 'Country Life' magazine, specifically the real estate section with its charming cottages and lush green fields. The idea of making the move to that kind of lifestyle was incredibly alluring to all of us, parents and kids alike (remembering this was well before the internet).
My parents, at that point, were at a crossroads, deciding which country to settle in, not too dissimilar from where my husband and I were at, choosing where to settle and
what to do. Viewing that magazine sparked a conversation between my parents about taking big leaps of faith and exploring the “what ifs.”
And then it dawned on me: "what if" we were to create a magazine that did just that? A publication to help people explore their options in the Scenic Rim, to experience this incredible place long before deciding to move here. Many of our real estate customers can often take years to make the move, and sometimes it starts with a simple road trip to the region—or I should say, a “Scenic Road” trip (another idea was born that day).
And so, the steep learning curve of becoming a publisher and editor began. From the simple act of daydreaming came a new direction and a renewed sense of purpose. This magazine has fed my creative side, kept me engaged in a sales and marketing role that I love, and helped our real estate business be recognised as a leading agency within the region. I have so much gratitude towards the wonderful community here, and the businesses I have the pleasure of working with.
In this edition, you’ll find stories about eco-tourism, agri-tourism, hospitality, property development, small businesses, the arts, even our beloved equine industry— where both my husband and I have spent so much of our lives—and, of course, real estate. It’s all here in one place. And even six years down the track, it’s still as exciting as ever to me. There have certainly been challenges along the way, yet the more I reflect and allow my thoughts to flow freely, the more grateful I am to be right here—living in the Scenic Rim, raising our family, creating this magazine, and building a real estate brand alongside our incredible team.
Daydreamers and deep thinkers—people who sometimes don’t always stay on task—perhaps we’re the ones who see the world through a different lens. So the next time you catch yourself lost in thought while doing the chores, don’t rush back to reality too quickly. You never know what ideas might be taking shape. It could be a genuinely transformative activity.

Growing up on the Gold Coast, I always had a passion for horses, but we kept ours on agistment, so I travelled every day just to see them. That all changed when, during a horse event at Kooralbyn, my parents found a block of land for sale. They purchased it, and for the first time, we had land of our own for our horses to graze on.
At 24, I realised that the Gold Coast lifestyle wasn’t my long-term fit. So, I moved out to our family property, and two years later, my parents followed. Today, I have my own home on the block, where I live with my wonderful partner, our young son, a whole lot of animals—including horses, a pony, border collies, and a few chickens—and the life I always dreamed of, although I’ve been told, no more animals. Ha!
Looking for a career that could blend my love for family, horses, and creativity, I picked up a camera, something I’d been trained in at school, but hadn’t really considered. I slowly built my brand, Kellarni Creative. I’m lucky enough to combine my passions and spend my days being a mum, and doing what I love.

I never planned to live in the Scenic Rim past high school. I grew up on beautiful Tamborine Mountain, but I had always pictured myself by the water, that glittered in the distance from our front verandah. After school I packed my bags and moved to the Coast for university, and while I love the water I realised that I love the country even more. Each weekend I travelled back to my high school sweethearts' farm in Tamrookum, and before I knew it I was a dairy farmers' wife! Keen to pursue my chosen career in marketing, I began the commute to the city every day. Coming home from Brisbane each evening, leaving the hustle and bustle behind and seeing the sun setting over the mountains made me truly appreciate the beauty of our region. Finding a balance between work and home was difficult, and when our second daughter was born in 2011 I decided to study design and start Branded Design Studio as a side hustle. The business grew along with our family and after a few years I was able to work in the studio full time, allowing me to spend more time with family and in our community. The Scenic Rim truly is an amazing place to live and work!

Having grown up in Moreton Bay on the water, life was always full of adventure. Mum had a caravan at Straddie where we lived every school holiday and every other weekend, and my Dad always had boats. We were forever on the water, fishing, cruising and lapping up the sun and that cool bay breeze. It was a great childhood. I met my husband in 2013 and in a whirlwind, we married less than a year later. Soon after, we decided to make the move out to the Scenic Rim and buy some land to start a new chapter with our son in tow. Not surprisingly it was a shock to my system, and I was struggling to find my feet. So much so that I was quite seriously wanting to sell up and move back to the bay, but my husband was never keen and always told me to hang in there. Turns out he is right (sometimes) and that patience really is a virtue. After almost 10 years here, I know our family has found their forever home. The Scenic Rim is the perfect playground to raise children, with its stunningly beautiful country, exciting local events, rich culture, incredible food and amazing people. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

WANDER PODS
STORY BY LUISA SLACK-SMITH
Welcome to the story and vision of what is the next generation of travel, as Wander looks to transform how we live, work and play.
The idea started back in 2019, in a small suburban office in Inner West Sydney. Coming from a decade of hospitality design, and after a massive day’s work, Cass sat down and thought… there’s something missing. Frustrated at the hotel industry’s lack of commitment to sustainable lowscale development, meaningful contribution to regional communities, and all too often transactional approach to travel, she believed the world needed something different.
So she set out to do just that…
Wander is on a mission to redefine how we travel, transforming our relationship with our planet, our communities and ourselves. Cass believes not only do we need to change how we travel, we need to change our mindset and transform how we live.
To do this, Wander is creating a network of modular, design-led, eco-aware WanderPods® in breathtaking nature-based locations, and working closely with local businesses to provide unique experiences, so that people can connect to what matters most—our planet, our communities and ourselves.
Think of Wander as an exploded hotel. Instead of 100 rooms in one location they’re creating one room in 100 locations. They source premium sites in high demand regional destinations, lease land with a revenue share model, and remotely manage the operations.
Wander in the Scenic Rim is the debut location and holds a special place in the origin story for the group. In 2019 David Morgan, the landowner of The Overflow Estate 1895 winery, sent an email to Cass after hearing about the new concept and becoming interested in a partnership. Drawn to the natural beauty of the region, Cass met David on site and started discussing the idea of a new type of accommodation for not only the region, but for Australia— nature-based, off-grid luxury WanderPods.
A couple of years on, and a global pandemic in between, five WanderPods now dot the shoreline of Lake Wyaralong. With the help from local builder Jon McDade from JJ Contractors, the pods were built on site using a flat packed system to minimise waste, and launched in December 2021, welcoming over 5,000 Wanderers to stay in the pods since.
From their feedback, guests absolutely love the privacy, stunning views, design quality and sustainability of the pods which run off solar harvesting, have 20k litre rainwater tanks, on-site wastewater treatment, and organic composting systems that guests are encouraged to use.
Following the opening of the Scenic Rim location, Wander has gone on to open their second location on Kangaroo Island in South Australia and has received several accolades including #1 Best Innovator and Disruptor of Short Term Rentals in London, becoming one of the Top 20 Sustainability Storytellers named by Tourism Australia, and being nominated as a finalist for Entrepreneur of the Year in the Women in Travel Awards. This all forms part of Wander’s plan to keep expanding across iconic locations around the country and giving people access to these unique natural environments without sacrificing quality, comfort or sustainability.
We look forward to following their journey and welcoming more of the world to experience the beauty of the Scenic Rim.

IMAGES BY SONNY AND NICK ROYAL, STORY BY LUISA SLACK-SMITH
In a world where travel is synonymous with adventure and discovery, two Gold Coast locals are taking their passion for exploration to new heights. Meet Nick and Sonny, the dynamic duo behind Unearth Adventure, a boutique travel company that stands out for its bespoke, immersive wildlife tours in some of the world's most biodiverse regions. Their idea was born from a deep love for nature and a burning desire to positively impact the planet.
While the pristine beaches and lush hinterland trails of the Gold Coast remain close to Nick and Sonny's hearts, their trips to Borneo truly ignited their spirit of adventure and inspired them to share the magic of this incredible destination with others. From this, Unearth Adventure
emerged, connecting curious explorers with biodiversity hotspots and conservation. It was the opportunity to make a genuine difference through their adventures.
Nick vividly describes the untamed nature of these experiences. "Borneo is truly magical; nestled in the heart of Southeast Asia, Sabah is the crown jewel. It's a land of contrasts, where mist-shrouded mountains meet dense rainforests teeming with life. Imagine orangutans swinging through the towering canopy, pygmy elephants roaming freely, and rare bird species gracefully flitting through the dense jungle. Sabah is a land of unparalleled natural beauty and biodiversity, a paradise waiting to be explored and a playground for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike."
Sonny adds, "Sabah offers adventurers the opportunity to explore the off-beaten path through a range of responsible nature-based experiences while indulging in some of the most luxurious stays in Southeast Asia. From eco-lodges nestled amongst the tallest tropical trees in the world to beachfront resorts overlooking the turquoise waters of the South China Sea, Sabah's wilderness stays offer a unique blend of comfort and immersion in nature."
Nick and Sonny's extensive experience in eco-tourism, conservation, and large-scale research projects sets this travel company apart. Their first-hand knowledge and involvement ensure that every trip is sustainably considered, low-impact, and designed purposefully, enhancing travellers' enjoyment.
From the moment travellers set foot in Sabah, they are greeted by knowledgeable guides who are passionate about sharing their love for the region's wildlife and culture, and have extensive experience in eco-tourism and conservation. Sonny explains the dynamic mix of options on offer, "Whether you're embarking on a jungle trek to spot orangutans or rare bird species, searching for elephants or proboscis monkeys along the banks of the Kinabatangan River, or simply enjoying a sunset cruise, every activity is designed to immerse you in the beauty and wonder of Sabah's natural wonders."
Nick adds, "We focus on bespoke bookings, small-group tours, and partnerships with local conservation initiatives; the company strives to create meaningful experiences that positively impact the places they explore. We also measure our success by the positive impact we make on the planet. We plant trees, create habitats, and support biodiversity conservation initiatives in every destination we visit. This propels us to craft authentic adventures that connect people with the natural world and make a lasting impact on the planet."
A regenerative tourist is typically someone mindful of their carbon footprint and local spend.
Join Nick and Sonny as they take you into the heart of Borneo's wilderness. MOUNT FRENCH LODGE
LUXURY GROUP GETAWAY
IMAGES BY JAMES KINNEAR
STORY BY LUISA SLACK-SMITH
Welcome to Mount French Lodge, where the rustic elegance of blue stone gabion walls meets the modern sophistication of smooth concrete, all enveloped in the cozy embrace of timber tones and luxurious leather furnishings. With its impressive scale, the Lodge promises an unforgettable architectural experience. Located just a stone's throw from the charming township of Boonah, it stands as a testament to superb craftsmanship and natural beauty.
In 2021, under the stewardship of new owners Tim and Jane Woodhouse, Mount French Lodge underwent an exciting transformation. Collaborating with Brisbanebased WIM architects, the same firm behind the Lodge's original design, the couple preserved its rustic charm while introducing impressive upgrades. These include a stunning BBQ pavilion with state-of-the-art amenities, alongside a new guest building featuring four equally inviting suites. With a total of eight beautifully appointed rooms, Mount French Lodge can now accommodate up to sixteen guests in comfort and style.
Nestled atop a private plateau within the sprawling 100-acre estate, Mount French Lodge boasts breathtaking views of the renowned Scenic Rim, stretching towards Cunningham’s Gap and The Great Dividing Range. The estate offers an array of amenities, including onsite manager’s quarters, the main Lodge aptly named 'The Great Room,' and two distinct buildings for guest suites. Guests can also enjoy a grass tennis court, a lavish new BBQ pavilion, a saltwater swimming pool, and a cozy fire pit, all surrounded by vast lawn areas perfect for morning yoga sessions, leisurely picnics, and lawn games.
'The Great Room' features a spacious kitchen with a commercial kitchen attached, an open-plan dining and lounge area with a fireplace, and an undercover outdoor entertaining area with a pizza oven, overlooking the pool and adjacent to the wine cellar and cocktail station.
For owners Tim and Jane, Mount French Lodge is about capturing an indescribable essence and sharing it with others. "There's a feeling that's hard to put into words," says Tim.
"You truly sense it as soon as you step into 'The Great Room' upon arrival." Jane adds, "We felt compelled to make it our own and share its extraordinary panoramic views, intricate architecture, and expansive scale with our guests."
Their favourite pastime?
"Spending a night or two at Mount French Lodge with our dearest friends," Tim concludes. "It's an experience that's truly unparalleled."
Tim also shares their motivation for venturing into the tourism industry and their unique approach to group-only bookings. Inspired by a memorable trip to Haggerstone Island, where exclusivity and intimacy were paramount, they sought to replicate that experience at Mount French Lodge. "While our Lodge may not offer the water and fishing experiences of Haggerstone Island," Tim explains, "it provides a comparable sense of exclusivity, allowing guests to fully relish the company of their loved ones."
Additionally, Tim hints at another intriguing tale behind the Lodge's red tractor, inspired by Amisfield Winery in NZ, leaving that story for another time.
Jane highlights the ease with which friends can come together and enjoy each other's company at Mount French Lodge. "Groups appreciate the feeling of being in a private home with personalised concierge service," she says. "Once guests are greeted with welcome cocktails, drinks, and a choice between a sumptuous grazing board or dinner, they can truly relax in the comfort of their own company." The allinclusive package ensures groups can fully unwind and make the most of their stay.
Whether it be a long overdue catch up with friends, a special occasion, or a corporate retreat, Mount French Lodge is an experience you’ll be wanting to do again. To book your next group getaway, simply reach out to the Mount French Lodge team via the website.

BUILDING DREAMS
STORY BY LUISA SLACK-SMITH
The Queensland building industry has experienced high demand in recent years, and selecting the right builder to collaborate with can be a difficult decision to make. Word of mouth is certainly one way to uncover a reliable and trustworthy builder. Jon and Josie McDade, of JJ Contractors, have built such a company, with many of their customers over the years referring friends and family.
Operating out of Jimboomba, this family-owned business specialises in residential builds across the Scenic Rim, Logan Shire, and select areas of Brisbane. Having a reputation for attention to detail, their business has begun to move towards more intricate and high-end projects. For licensed builder and carpenter Jon, his passion for building dates back to a young age.
“For as long as I can remember, anything that could be crafted from a piece of timber, I would have a go at. My dad, who built his own computer company, taught me important lessons about running a business. He passed away some years ago, but I watched him grow our family business with a strong focus on customer service and mentoring his staff. Building has always given me a tremendous feeling of accomplishment; there is no better feeling than standing back and appreciating what you have achieved.”
The JJ Contractors team boasts some impressive builds in the Scenic Rim, including the innovative Wander pods at Wyaralong Dam and the stunning House #5 at Moogerah Lake. "Building unique homes or crafting accommodation venues that push the boundaries and challenge conventional norms is my absolute passion," says Jon. "Seeing people’s visions materialise into reality is incredibly rewarding. Even building this pool house for our own family is a great example of how projects centred around how people use the spaces they occupy can have a positive impact on quality of life. Josie and I brought our ideas together to create a space that has now become the heart of our family gatherings— BBQs, swimming, fire pit sessions, or watching the footy; this is now a versatile and functional space. I guess that is a big part of why we are so invested in these types of builds, because we believe in what we do, and know we do it well.”
When discussing the key factors in establishing a reputable building business, Jon emphasises, "We're driven by building relationships. Going the extra mile for our customers is second nature to us; ensuring their vision comes to life while also giving our expertise on how to make that happen. The fact that we have a significant number of returning customers speaks volumes.” Josie adds there is a huge amount of trust that clients put into builders, and this is something that is not taken lightly. “I know Jon and his team take immense pride in having a positive work environment on site which encourages proactive and innovative problem solving if problems arise. Whether it's our subcontractors or homeowners, their satisfaction is paramount. After all, great communication and a shared vision between all parties translates to superior workmanship and continued friendships. It’s great to be able to help clients achieve their outcome, but more importantly, it’s about making the process as enjoyable and seamless as possible.”

SAMANTHA CAVALLO
PUBLISHER, EDITOR AND PHOTOGRAPHER
STORY BY LUISA SLACK-SMITH
Local Tamborine resident, Samantha Cavallo, lives by the quote, “whatever you do in life, make sure you do it with a bit of style.” She’s also one of the select few to have built an impressive career in the very specific industry of equine photography, and in a relatively short amount of time I might add (seven years).
“I have always loved documenting my everyday life, and with equine photography I get to share those intimate moments with people and their horses. It’s a privilege to witness them firsthand and be able to document them. A moment in time is never repeated but we can try to capture the essence of it in a photograph. My mum says I have my heart in my eyes. I like that.”
It was during COVID, while nursing her Nan through palliative care, that Samantha found herself asking the universe for some direction.
“The idea to publish my own equine magazine just came to me one day. I had no idea how to use any of the software, no background in design or publishing, all I had was good images. I learnt everything from YouTube videos, trial and error and made plenty of mistakes! It took me about a year to put the first issue together and we have just sent our 7th off to print. My Nan had spoilt me my whole life, so when she passed away she had left me some money, and that’s how I was able to publish the first edition of Equestrienne Magazine. I’m so grateful to her every day for that final and enduring gift she gave me.”
When asked to describe her target audience with Equestrienne Magazine, her reply is simple… “We have a strong focus on women in the equestrian industry! It’s a huge sector within the equestrian audience. Riders, trainers, breeders, artists, and business owners. We publish in depth, long-format articles, horse and rider profiles as well as event coverage and photo stories. The tone is more conversational and less authoritative. We try to feature people of interest who haven’t had a lot of press already. I think there is a trend of always platforming the same people in other publications but there are so many inspiring people out there doing amazing things. We aim to keep a balance of coverage across the equestrian disciplines as well as lifestyle inclusions such as fashion, travel and art in each issue. We always have showjumping reportage as our international correspondent Helen Cruden, travels mainly between Grand Prix’s all around the world. Helen’s event photography is world-class, and we are incredibly fortunate to have partnered with her from the beginning. We are also very lucky to have Naomi Hill, Masters of Positive Psychology, on board and her articles bring something unique and more thought-provoking than anything else you would have read in other horse magazines. Our content is very horse-centric, positive, and inspirational. I also love supporting other photographers through our Luxlife photojournalism section. When I first started, I was worried about filling the pages, but that’s probably the easiest part now”.
As we dive into the conversation around publishing, a passionate topic for us both, we start to discuss the challenges that we independent publishers face. The balance between advertising, editorial, advertorial, cost of print, and so on, and with the increasing popularity of digital media, the question that is often asked, is print media dead?
“I recently listened to a podcast which discussed the turn of slow media as an antidote to ‘digital fatigue’. We spend so much time on screens, I’m as guilty of it as anyone, but
it’s nice to grab a magazine and just have a flick through. It’s a bit more approachable than committing to a book. You can pick it up, put it down and come back to it again. It’s something beautiful to have in your house as well. You make something you love and hope other people will love it, too. You would know yourself how much effort goes into every shoot, every editorial, every process of getting a magazine to print. There’s a team of people working to create something (a very small team in my case) and who take a lot of pride in what they produce. It’s a very satisfying process which relies on a lot of symbiosis.”
As we sit in the Scenic Road office and clink our champagne glasses together, we toast to the fact that we are both in an industry that we love, and hopefully, that we are doing it with a bit of style!
If you’d like to subscribe to Samantha's beautiful magazine, which makes wonderful coffee table reads for your home, or as gifts for family or friends, head to www.equestriennemagazine.com
DISCOVERING WONGARI
A WILDERNESS ESCAPE LIKE NO OTHER IMAGES
BY JACQUI FAULKNER, STORY BY LUISA SLACK-SMITH
For those yearning for an immersive, off-the-grid experience, Wongari offers a powerful blend of natural beauty and eco-conscious design. What started as a single cozy cabin has blossomed into a luxurious, sustainably driven retreat, seamlessly merging creature comforts with the raw allure of the Christmas Creek Valley and Lamington National Park.
Wongari’s eco-cabins, deep within this pristine wilderness, are more than just accommodations—they’re gateways to untouched nature. The vision of owners Mark and Brad, who fell in love with the land’s untamed charm in 2010, the retreat has grown out of a desire to escape the everyday grind. "We saw the land and were immediately captivated by its raw beauty. Within two weeks, we were the proud owners,” Mark recalls. “We initially came here to unplug, but the property’s power over us grew stronger than we ever imagined.”
One of Wongari's standout features is its innovative, off-grid energy system, using the constant flow of Christmas Creek. Inspired by a neighbour’s prototype, Mark and Brad installed a hydro-energy system, channelling water from the creek’s elevated source. "Waterfall Creek met the criteria perfectly, and it’s never run dry. Now, we have power running 24/7 with minimal battery reliance,” explains Brad. “What’s amazing is the water we use continues to flow downstream, nourishing a new ecosystem as it goes. This process has zero resource consumption, zero pollution, and utilises a power spout made of 65% recycled materials."
Embracing hydropower wasn’t just a sustainable choice—it was also more economical than relying on mains power. “Solar was another option, but hydropower felt right for us. It took a steep learning curve, but the opportunity to use such an abundant, renewable resource was too good to pass up.”
Both cabins offer a sense of refined simplicity, with floor-toceiling glass in the bathrooms that captures the beauty of the surrounding trees and natural privacy. Cozy fireplaces, outdoor decks, BBQ facilities, and peaceful nooks invite guests to truly unwind and reconnect with nature.
At Wongari, travellers will find not only a comfortable place to stay but also a profound connection to a landscape that lives, breathes, and renews itself.

MARTIN DINGLE-WALL: ACTOR, PRODUCER, SCREENWRITER.
IMAGES BY BEN HAMILTON, STORY BY LUISA SLACK-SMITH
FROM BONDI TO HOLLYWOOD AND BEYOND
You might remember Martin Dingle-Wall from his breakthrough role as Dr. Flynn Saunders on Home and Away, which earned him a Logie nomination for 'Most Popular New Talent' in 2001. Since then, Martin has shared the screen with Hollywood luminaries such as Antonio Banderas, Nicole Kidman, Eric Bana, Joseph Fiennes, Peyton List, and Akon. He has been directed by Simon West (of Con Air fame), Louie Gibson (Mel Gibson’s son), and Joseph Kosinski (director of Top Gun: Maverick). Back home, he has been a series regular on many of Australia’s beloved shows, including Satisfaction, Rescue Special Ops, Underbelly, Upper Middle Bogan, and he starred in his own series, COPS L.A.C.
Currently dividing his time between LA and the Gold Coast, Martin, or Marty as he’s known, is now filming the second season of the American drama series CYPHER. He plays the lead role of Will Scott, an ex-FBI agent and cryptography expert.
We recently caught up with Marty to talk about his latest film, This Bloody Country. The conversation was engaging and candid, much like Marty himself. He reminisced about his Australian childhood and how his adventurous spirit led him to a fulfilling career in acting.
A WILD AND FREE CHILDHOOD
Growing up in Bondi with his older brother Jamie and younger sister Sally, Marty recalls his youth as "the perfect childhood." "Family time was mostly spent exploring the outdoors, from the coast to the country. My parents, Georgie and Ed, were attentive and disciplined us well, but by today’s standards, their parenting style would likely be considered loose," he laughs.
Despite his exploratory nature, Marty’s family remains a cornerstone of his life. Now a father, he aims to instil the same sense of adventure in his son.
"I believe the awe for life comes from exposure to variation. My parents encouraged us to travel, so by 21, I was backpacking. Before that, I was a graphic designer and worked as a cartoonist for Walt Disney. I travelled through Europe, Scandinavia, Canada, and America until I was 25.
During my travels in Europe, I discovered the ‘buskers' line,’ ancient routes where minstrels have wandered since medieval times. I encountered a community of storytellers, performers, and creators. It was a revelation for a kid from the Australian beaches. That experience birthed a new me, leaving behind my naivety."
THE PATH TO ACTING
Marty's journey into acting was serendipitous. "I got involved in a street theatre performance, my first exposure to ‘old world craft’. When I realised I was part of an improvisation, I stepped back and watched it unfold. I was mesmerised. Those three and a half years of being lost in the world shaped every positive aspect of me. Guided by conversations, intuition, and the kindness of strangers, I found peace in the uncertainty."
Returning to Australia at 25, Marty dove into acting. Despite not being accepted into prestigious acting schools like NIDA and WAAPA, he remained undeterred. "I explored the areas that fascinated me and learned invaluable lessons from theatre and short films. A friend made me an actor’s reel from my short films, which helped me land an acting agent. Getting signed felt like a big break. Eventually, I auditioned for Home and Away and got the role of Dr. Flynn Saunders."
AN UNEXPECTED CHALLENGE IN MOSCOW
One of Marty’s most remarkable stories involves the rom com All That Jam, filmed in Moscow. "I accepted the
romantic lead role, believing only a few scenes were in Russian. It turned out only a few scenes were NOT in Russian! I discovered this while in Moscow, just three days before filming started. The confusion was overwhelming, but stepping off the project would have crippled the production. So, I learned Russian scene by scene. It wasn’t easy, but we made the movie."
THIS BLOODY COUNTRY
Marty’s latest film, This Bloody Country, directed by Craig Packard, is set in 1869 in the American West. It follows a religious family’s arduous journey from Salt Lake City through unforgiving terrain to establish a new church outpost. Marty plays Ned Campbell, the lead character.
"At its core, this story is about violence and peace. It highlights the role of Mormon women pioneers. Ned’s journey involves recognising and utilising the power of the women around him. It’s a tale of a man navigating a violent world, confronting his demons, and protecting those who can't defend themselves. This film uniquely presents an Australian frontiersman as its hero, a great honour for me and a first in this genre."
In This Bloody Country, Marty represents not just his character, but the spirit of an entire continent, bringing a fresh perspective to the American Western genre.

EMBERS WOOD FIRE DINING
Driven by a shared ethos, the Embers team have taken part in some of SEQ leading restaurants. First meeting at Homage restaurant where the innovative leaders strived to close the gap between the guest and grower while utilising local, ethical produce to create a unique experience for their diners. It was here that the passion for fire-based cookery began and after the original homestead burnt down, Homage adapted by reinventing an old barn to its new restaurant, while only having an outdoor wood-fired kitchen.
Manifested from both vision and necessity, the style of cookery soon became recognised as the future of the team. "The flavour you get from wood which has been burning all day is like nothing else, and we wouldn't want to cook any other way".
Expanding this methodology to Beechmont Estate, while furthering their commitment to local suppliers they continued to introduce methods such as fermentation, curing and ageing to get the best out of the beautiful produce this region has to offer.
Quickly growing a rapport in the Scenic Rim and being awarded two hats, the team still wanted more, hatching the idea of becoming completely mobile, being able to set up anywhere, to cook unique and delicious meals without leaving a trace. From this, Embers Wood Fire Dining was born.
How would you describe the Embers style of catering service compared to other event style caterer?
Our goal is for you to feel like you're immersed within the region while enjoying the spoils of high-end fine dining. Having two hatted level chefs with years of experience in the region, allows us to pivot based on your event to bring you a premium product that suits your taste, while highlighting the Scenic Rim. Being able to cater from small bites to banquets and tasting menus, what we consistently deliver is premium local produce cooked with care over wood fire, while utilising the whole ingredient in support of our root-to-shoot, nose-to-tail ethos.
What are a few examples of the type of events and bookings that you offer?
We cater to all styles of events! We work with you to create the experience you're looking for. Our mobile set up allows us to cook just about anywhere with enough notice. Whether it be a small elopement, corporate dinner or large wedding, we can design a menu to suit the event. Our personal favourite is the Embers experience, a sensory storytelling tasting menu for 10-30 guests. Through which we showcase the fantastic produce this region has to offer.
As passionate creatives and lovers of fresh local produce, what is the most important experience you wish for your customers to have when choosing Embers?
We want to create a lasting, unique experience. We want your memory to be more than just delicious food, but a story. We want to share our passion for the region through the food we cook, utilising the whole animal and every part of the produce you see. We aim to showcase the difference in not only knowing where your food is from, but also seeing what unique things can be done with it. Creating flavours, through fermentation, preservation and wood fire cooking, whether that be local crayfish cooked on charcoal with finger lime and Stanthorpe apple, or slow cooked lamb shoulder and smoked pumpkin.

GARDEN GATHERING
Host an unforgettable garden gathering with friends!
With Queensland’s gorgeous weather blessing us year-round, there’s no better place to bring people together for a long leisurely lunch than at home. Here’s our guide to elevating your garden party into a truly memorable event that will leave your guests raving.
Menu
When hosting a garden feast, seasonal produce is key—and don’t forget the colour! For an extra touch of magic, why not let someone else take the reins? Cheating? Maybe, but for those of us who do a lot of cooking, it’s nice to savour a proper chef’s work. The talented team at Embers Wood Fire Dining brings an interactive flair, cooking everything before your eyes on an open grill—think rustic outdoor cooking. Our recent lunch included mouthwatering selections from local producer and farmer Alex; Australian Sweetwater Crayfish and Aussie White lamb (prepared two ways), paired with a refreshing watermelon salad, and warm flatbreads made from scratch. A relaxing day is definitely on the cards if you’re taking a back seat!
Beverages
Set the scene by choosing the perfect wine pairings—and yes, this does require a pre-tasting of wines, beers, and ales. Our go-to is Witches Falls Cellar Door on Tamborine Mountain, where their team knows just how to find the ideal match for your menu. After sampling, we chose their Provenance Rosé, a light rosé with notes of strawberry, raspberry, peach, pink grapefruit, and a hint of mint. This dry wine’s soft pink hue complemented our table perfectly. Paired with refreshing ales from Boxer Brewing, like their Lazy Ale and IPA, it’s a fun way to engage guests and spark conversations about newfound favourites.
Styling
Not a professional stylist? No worries—just take a few cues from the experts. Explore local boutiques and antique stores and add affordable pieces you can reuse later (hello Target, Kmart, and IKEA). For this gathering, we picked seasonal wildflowers from local grower Florin Lane for an organic, unplanned look. Our favourite boutique, My Country Escape in Canungra, helped us find soft pink linen napkins, gold napkin rings, ice buckets, and tea lights.
Our tip—do a practice run; it’ll boost your confidence so you can truly relax with friends. Then, the only thing left to do is top up the glasses and relax with your guests!

GROWING HAPPINESS
STORY BY LUISA SLACK-SMITH
From the hardship of drought, a field of sunflowers bloomed, and a cause was born that now brings joy to thousands. In Kalbar, a Scenic Rim town with a population of just 3,000, a movement has grown into one of Southeast Queensland’s most talked-about events— the Kalbar Sunflower Festival. This May 2nd to 4th, the festival will return for its fifth year, welcoming 13,000 visitors to a countryside filled with over a million sunflowers.
The story began in 2021, when Jenny and Russell Jenner, long-time lucerne farmers, struggled to keep their crops alive during a severe drought. Russell brought home a bunch of store-bought sunflowers, sparking an idea—why not plant sunflowers, which need little water? That first festival drew 2,500 visitors, inspiring the Jenners to expand the event the following year.
While planning the 2022 festival, Russell received a lifechanging diagnosis of Stage 4 esophageal cancer. Despite his own battle, his compassionate spirit never dimmed. During his treatment, he shared sunflowers with fellow patients—a gesture that embodied his kind and generous nature. It wasn’t long before he became known as "The Sunflower Man," a name that captured the warmth and kindness he radiated.
Though Russell passed away in July 2023, his generous heart and uplifting spirit live on. The Kalbar Sunflower Festival carries forward his legacy—each sunflower blooms in honour of his mission to brighten lives.
In 2024, the festival raised $110,000 to fund a Cancer Care Coordinator position at Mater Springfield Hospital, allowing Ninetta Stockwell to offer vital support to local cancer patients. Additionally, $20,000 from long lunches, gala dinners, and sunflower sales went toward a cuddle bed for the Boonah Hospital Palliative Care ward, allowing families to stay close during their loved ones' final days.
Jenny’s goal for 2025 is to raise $150,000 for Mater Springfield Hospital and fund two to three more cuddle beds for palliative care facilities across Queensland. She hopes to increase awareness about these beds, which many families don't know about until they need one.
To support Jenny’s #sunflowersforgood mission, visit www. kalbarsunflowers.com.au for tickets, stalls, and sponsorship options. Each contribution honours “The Sunflower Man,” bringing hope and joy to many—one sunflower at a time.

The Scenic Rim is home to some of Queensland's premier polo fields, rivalling top venues both nationally and internationally. From May to September, the region buzzes with polo tournaments and events, offering spectators the perfect opportunity to enjoy both fast-paced polo and laidback picnics.
The sport is overseen by the Queensland Polo Association and the Australian Polo Federation, with the South East Queensland Polo Club based in the area. The club has access to privately owned fields, where both tournaments and practice matches are held. Currently, there are seven polo fields throughout the region.
During the Queensland polo season, players from across Australia and around the world flock to the Scenic Rim to enjoy the sport under sunny skies before moving on to the wider polo circuits in Australia and New Zealand. Many also compete in renowned polo destinations such as the UK, USA, South Africa, Asia, and India.

CHASING LIGHT
WITH CLE Á & ALI
You're local to the Scenic Rim, what is it about living in this area that you love most?
Cleá: A big thing for us is the space and incredible nature—I live for the winter sunsets. It's amazing having people out and watching them slowly unwind and sink into the rhythm of the space. Plus, it's great being just an hour away from Brisbane, we can easily pop into the city for a gig and then head back home.
How would you describe your style of music (feel free to talk about your music videos too)? How has it changed over the years?
Cleá: We range between folk, dream pop, shoegaze, and soft rock. We tend to write about how we’re feeling in that exact moment, and it’s often hard to pinpoint an exact style of music as it changes frequently. We deemed the second album 'Idle Light' as ‘mantra pop’ because there is a consistent message flowing through the songs that repeats over and over again, reminding the listener of the lesson we’re expressing. The music has changed purely through getting older, gaining a fuller experience of life, and really honing in on our craft.
How have you both changed and grown as artists?
Cleá: We are much more certain of our creative output; there’s not a lot of second-guessing, whereas I feel that was much more prominent when we first started creating music, aligning more with what we thought people wanted to hear rather than purely writing for ourselves. We want to always be moving forward, changing, and growing while staying true to our art.
What inspires you both musically?
Ali: I'm inspired by music that feels truthful, fun, and explorative, especially when someone can frame the elements of music in new ways. I'm also really inspired by great musicians and performances. Seeing something live always uplifts me.
Cleá: I’m inspired by my favourite musicians who continue to create exciting and introspective art, as well as our local community of artists and designers.
Can you tell us what your collaborative process is for you and Ali?
Ali: The process on 'Idle Light' was very chaotic; we were going through big changes in our lives, so it reflected where we were at the time. Our current process is much simpler; we’re currently demoing many ideas and not getting too lost in each song, but staying truthful to the initial ideas and running with them.
Cleá: Yeah, we often start with a little ditty, record it on our phones, and then revisit the idea when we go into the studio. Some of our best ideas are made in the kitchen.
How does Idle Light differ from your first album Vermillion?
Cleá: ‘Vermillion’ was recorded and written within a very short time; it was very much a case of whatever surfaced becoming the song, whereas ‘Idle Light’ was created over a long period of time. We delved deep into the writing and recording process with precision; there are so many layers and intricacies.
Ali: Vermillion was a breeze compared to 'Idle Light'. I got a little obsessive during 'Idle Light', but we knew we were processing deep stories inside us, so it was bound to be difficult.
Where do you both see yourselves musically in the future?
Ali: This kind of feels like the future. We’ve been dreaming of potential futures for such a long time, but life always leads you on unexpected journeys, so I think we’ve stopped visualising and are just enjoying where we're at now. Definitely some big vague goals of success, but mostly just continuing to explore and have fun.
Do you have plans to move overseas, or is Australia your forever home?
Cleá: If the right opportunity was presented to us and it felt right, then we would move overseas for a time, but ultimately, Australia is where our heart is and will most likely be our forever home.
What has been the most defining moment in your respective careers thus far?
Ali: The moments we’ve shared with friends and fans at live shows where time stops and you’re all just in it with each other. I feel like it’s those moments during live shows that will stay with me forever.
Cleá: Absolutely, it’s always a surreal and special experience to play our songs live and have people receive and sing them back to us.
Where can fans of Cleá follow this epic musical journey you’re both on?
Cleá: You can find everything on my website: cleamusic.com and Ali’s Instagram @swanpond.studios

AESTHETIC SOLUTIONS
AT THE SUSIE PEARL CLINIC
Our fascination with anti-ageing and the pursuit of youthful vitality has persisted throughout the ages. With the evolution of science and technology, cultural attitudes towards anti-ageing treatments have significantly shifted. Convenient, effective, and relatively low-cost, the noninvasive cosmetic industry has become the new frontier of beauty enhancement. And you have to admit, it does sound rather appealing: to rewind the signs of aging with little to no downtime and at a fraction of the cost of plastic surgery. We tracked down one of South East Queensland’s industry leaders, Susie Pearl, for an informative conversation about anti-ageing and her decision to move back to the local area.
“I have been a registered nurse since 2013 and a cosmetic injector since 2018. I grew up in Jimboomba, then moved to the Gold Coast for about four years, but all I ever wanted was to be back amongst the greenery and open space. I love the pace of living in a community like the Scenic Rim. I love seeing friendly faces when I pop down to the shops, and I wanted my kids to grow up in a more rural setting.”
Recently voted Greater Brisbane's Best Cosmetic Injectable Clinic for the last two years running, The Susie Pearl Clinic has undergone its own transformation. Having outgrown the original clinic in Jimboomba, Susie and her team have now moved to their new and stylishly appointed suites in Yarrabilba. Susie explains why she thinks her industry is seeing such significant growth: “I find people are becoming less judgmental about having cosmetic treatments done. And it’s not just injectables we offer, but a whole range of treatments. Like most things, prevention is key. Simply put, the sooner you do something about it, the less ‘work’ you’ll need in the long run for much less money and a much better result. It’s much easier to prevent something than to fix it, and the same applies to the skin and ageing process.”
Helping people feel better about themselves comes naturally to Susie. Her reason for becoming a nurse in the first place was to help those who needed it most. “I absolutely loved working in the aged care sector. Making residents laugh and feel good was always my aim. They’ve all given so much to their families and the community—the least we can do is look after those who have looked after us. While I am no longer in that space as a nurse, I still apply those same goals to my work now. Nothing makes us happier than when we hear back from clients post-treatment
about how pleased they are with the results. Helping people to look and feel their best so they feel confident— this is why we have the reputation that we do. It’s about doing what’s best for the client and finding the best solution for their individual needs.”
The process of booking a treatment starts with a thorough consultation. “When a client first makes an appointment with either myself or one of our practitioners, we spend a large part of the time discussing why they have decided to seek treatment. We then complete a full face assessment to establish a treatment plan. Consultation is key to understanding what the client wants to achieve, while also providing education and information on the different treatment options. We do offer treatments on the same day if that’s what the client would like to proceed with.”
So now that we’ve got you interested, what kinds of advanced non-surgical anti-aging treatments are available at The Susie Pearl Clinic?
• Skin Rejuvenation
• Anti-Wrinkle Treatments
• Dermal Fillers
• Masseter Muscle Treatments
• Armpit Hyperhidrosis
• PDO Thread Treatment
• Liquid Rhinoplasty
• Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatment (which helps resolve pesky pelvic floor problems)

JANIE'S WELLNESS TIPS
Freedom Heath & Fitness and Bliss Yoga & Pilates Studio owner Janie Coutts is passionate about helping you get started. As a class instructor and personal trainer, she shares her top 6 tips for seeing results.
1. STEP ONE… IS STEP ONE...
Sounds crazy but the first step is actually just walking in through the front door. The best advice I can give is… there are only good things on the other side of this gym door. Feelings of accomplishment and maybe a bit of sweat. Haha. But truly, I can promise you, you won’t regret getting started.
2. FIND YOUR HAPPY PLACE…
Finding your happy place at our gym is the number one key to sticking with a program. It’s no good you coming in and feeling lost. We have a one-on-one private studio which is great for anyone who is worried about feeling overwhelmed with all the equipment, or needs that bit of help to get started. We have an incredible range of gym floor equipment, and cardio machines for those who are a little more seasoned, and the Bliss Yoga and Pilates Studio which has a lovely relaxed atmosphere.
3. SET GOALS…
Consistency is key. Once you figure out what days, times and the routine that works best with your schedule, you really do get on a roll. And before you know it, it’s been a few weeks and months, and you’re starting to see results. YES!
4. SELF LOVE …
We all go through weeks, months, and years of not prioritising ourselves. So make it a part of your daily selflove talk to tell yourself you deserve to be looking after yourself and conditioning your body to feel strong and
mobile. The best way to stay young is to keep moving. The trainers and I are here to help you do that. In whatever capacity that is. Start small and work on setting goals.
5. WATER, WATER, WATER…
Drinking more water usually happens naturally. But you’d be surprised as to how many people don’t drink water until they start working out. When you start moving more, you’ll actually want to start drinking more water and start eating better. Trust me on this one. Get moving first and some of those pesky dietary habits will be easier to kick.
6. JOY…
Find joy in your health and wellness routine. Whatever you decide to do, enjoyment is key. I like to think our team contributes to this enjoyment. We are here to help you find what works best for you. Whether it’s working out in a group, Pilates, yoga, or in the privacy of our PT Studio, or simply just hitting the gym floor and putting those headphones on.
There is no better time to start moving. As the Nike slogan says, JUST DO IT!

CLEAN BEAUTY
WITH KIBI RAW MINERALS CEO JACQUELINE SOUTH
Congratulations on KIBI Raw Minerals' recent accolades! Can you tell us more about these industry awards and your Clean Beauty Certifications?
Thank you! I’m thrilled that KIBI won three gold medals at this year's Clean Beauty Awards Australia for our BB Crème, Mineral Powder Foundations, and Illuminating Bronzer. I also received the Eco Choice award for the BB Crème's sustainable packaging and the Vegan Award for the Bronzer and Mineral Powder Foundations.
This marks the second consecutive year KIBI has been recognised at the Clean Beauty Awards, further solidifying our place in the clean beauty industry. The Clean Beauty Certification from Safe Cosmetics Australia ensures that our products are toxic-free, cruelty-free, safe, and vegan-friendly.
What inspired your journey in the beauty industry, and why did you choose to focus on clean beauty?
With over 35 years in the beauty industry, working with international brands, I became increasingly aware of the toxic ingredients commonly used. I wanted to create products that were not only safe but effective. Clean, minimal makeup is not just a trend—it’s a lifestyle that positively impacts your skin. My goal is to help women embrace their natural beauty with products that are good for them and aligned with the A-Beauty philosophy—clean, minimalistic, and fuss-free.
How does your personal philosophy influence KIBI Raw Minerals, and what sets your brand apart from others?
My philosophy of purity and simplicity is at the core of KIBI Raw Minerals. What sets KIBI apart is our genuine commitment to clean beauty. Our powdered minerals contain just seven ingredients, designed to reflect and scatter light, giving the skin a clear, youthful glow. With the right application, the finish is like a second skin—never powdery or flat. My products are custom blended for precise shade matching, resulting in a radiant complexion. The 'less is more' approach ensures safety, effectiveness, and enhances natural beauty, empowering consumers to make informed choices.
Can customers find their perfect shade before purchasing? Yes, we offer an online shade match quiz to help customers find their ideal foundation shade. Visit our website to take the quiz: www.kibirawminerals.com.au
How does the clean beauty movement align with your vision for the future of the beauty industry?
The future of beauty lies in clean, health-focused products that prioritise well-being without compromising results. Clean beauty is now leading the industry, offering products that are pure, effective, and designed to enhance both your appearance and inner vitality.
Join the clean beauty movement and subscribe to our newsletter for the latest updates and exclusive offers.

SCENIC ROAD PROPERTIES
MARKET REVIEW
The Scenic Rim region of South East Queensland remained a magnet for property seekers throughout 2024 with its alluring blend of natural beauty, rural lifestyle, and comparative affordability. Though this past year was marked by more complex economic conditions, the Scenic Rim’s real estate sector showed remarkable adaptability.
The region has seen some price stabilisation in 2024, as rising interest rates tempered price growth in many areas. After years of sustained appreciation, market prices have begun to level out.
Suburbs with more accessible property prices, like Beaudesert and Boonah, saw slight price increases (around 2-4%), while more premium lifestyle areas, like Tamborine Mountain, experienced a plateau. However, the demand for lifestyle properties continues to anchor market values, even as economic challenges influence buying behaviour.
Buyers in the Scenic Rim continue to be motivated by lifestyle factors, with a particular interest in acreage properties and farms, which is what our region is most famous for. Despite market stabilisation, homes that provide a unique lifestyle experience continue to command premium prices.
In 2024, investors also took advantage of Scenic Rim’s solid rental market, particularly as regional areas continued to experience rental shortages. Low vacancy rates and steadily increasing rental prices across all housing types have resulted in better yields for investors.
The Scenic Rim has continued to benefit from interstate migration, with interest from interstate buyers looking for affordable alternatives to major urban centres adding to our local buyer demand. Remote work flexibility remains a significant driver, and lifestyle properties with good connectivity saw heightened interest from both local and out-of-state buyers.
In 2024, Scenic Rim’s real estate market demonstrated resilience amid economic and environmental challenges, underscoring the region’s enduring appeal as both a lifestyle and investment destination. While market dynamics have shifted in response to broader economic conditions, Scenic Rim remains one of Queensland’s most attractive and stable real estate regions, promising steady growth and value for 2025 and beyond.

PROPERTY STYLING
BY SCENIC ROAD LIVING
First impressions are everything in real estate—especially in Australia’s stunning rural regions. Even the most modest spaces can be transformed. Staging vs. Styling; Which is the better option? Both are powerful strategies to attract buyers, increase occupancy, and boost sale prices by turning spaces into polished, inviting homes. Whether you’re preparing a bushland retreat or a touristfriendly venue, the right styling approach can highlight a property’s best features and foster an emotional connection, helping buyers or guests envision themselves there—from their first look online to that in-person inspection.
STAGING VS. STYLING
Staging involves fully transforming a space using a stylist’s own collection of furniture, artwork, and decor, typically rented for 4-6 weeks. These items create a cohesive look targeted to the market, ideal for homes needing a visual update or for owners ready to move out.
Styling, on the other hand, enhances what’s already there and can be more budget friendly. Small touches—such as fresh flowers, cozy throws, new towels, rugs, artwork, and candles—add warmth and character. It might also include replacing or removing bulky, outdated furniture that detracts from the home’s appeal. Carefully curated spaces really can have a lasting impact on buyers or make your accommodation venue worth every dollar.
PHOTOS AND VIDEO
Styling and staging are only the beginning. Scenic Road Living ensures properties shine in all the right places utilising high-quality photography and videography. Shoots may include food styling and lifestyle elements that capture each property’s unique story. From architectural properties to rustic retreats, visuals are key in making a property stand out online and in print.
No matter the property type, staging or styling creates a cohesive, welcoming look that resonates with visitors and buyers alike. Ready to transform your property into a dream destination? Contact Scenic Road Living to see how we can make your property stand out and leave a lasting impression.
