Editor's Letter “Nothing is permanent except change.” the words of Greek philosopher Heraclitus, 500 BC. Fast forward 2,500 years and this statement is just as relevant now as it was back then. One thing I notice when talking to our advertisers and the community, be it about flood, fire, COVID, or economic changes, is that no matter what the challenge, people are quick to adapt and find ways to overcome such obstacles. Our magazine is living proof that people want to continue marketing and showcasing their craft. I am always grateful of the willingness to invest in our pages. Of course, we’d rather not face such challenges in business or in our family lives, however the ability to survive is what makes us, as a species, so interesting. In saying that, the stress and angst of such challenges is fresh in many people’s minds, and sometimes never leaves us. We all have our own ways of dealing with emotional and physical stress. A useful article can be found on page 54 with our resident photographer Carin Garland exploring healing therapies to overcome such trauma. My hat goes off to Carin and when you read the story you’ll soon know why, a beautiful article providing reassurance to those looking for a way to heal – Healing with Reanne, an absolute must read.

You’ll also notice we’ve chosen to highlight some incredible homes within the region. Not just homes listed with our sister company Scenic Road Properties, but interior and people who sparked our interest with their undeniable style and creativity. Samantha Youngman’s home oozes international style, with an eclectic mix of pieces from her travels. Stephanie and Gareth Jones literally built their home from the ground up, the result a blend of classical pieces, antiques and recycled finds. Scenic Rim Artist Monique Quarantini is exceptionally gifted, her creative talent spanning across many applications page 14. We also meet talented Musician, singer and song writer, Laura Frank and her partner Nick. They invite us into their home to talk about their recent success on iTunes and the many layers, and years, that make up a professional musician’s journey. And when looking for places to relax, we couldn’t go past Wander. If you love off grid, then this is one to experience, on page 26. With sustainability and permaculture still top of our minds, especially with all the hikes in living costs, we interviewed a young Tamborine couple, Yana and Eddie. Dedicated to treading lightly on this earth, this family decided to take some control about where their food comes from and is well worth the read.

We also highlight the devastating Northern NSW floods which occurred earlier in the year, pages 50. It’s a story close to my heart with the article written by Firefighter and member for the SES, Johnathon Thomas, who also happens to be my youngest brother. While out helping others in his community, he returned home to find his own family home engulfed by the muddied flood waters of the Tweed River. Getting back to our feel-good stories and lifting the mood are our food pages, page 32. We decided to invite the Thomas family, Jonathon, Stephanie and Mia to enjoy some Scenic Rim hospitality, showcasing locally farmed Redclaw crays - cooked three ways. Delicious! The Thomas family certainly looked the part, hence the front cover choice although my brother Jonathon tells me he charges extra for front cover modelling work. Ha!

Carin Garland Creative Director / Photographer When I was a little girl, weekend drives up to Tamborine Mountain were a fairly regular occurrence. Even then, I was captivated by the beauty and dreamt about living in my own cottage and calling this piece of tropical paradise home. As luck would have it, I do call the Mountain home and as I look out from my porch, down over the dense gullies and across to Moreton Bay, I still pinch myself that my little boy and I are lucky enough to be surrounded by nature, waking up to the sound of birds instead of siren and are a part of a nurturing community. We have finally found our “tribe.” If you know me, you’ll know that my camera gear rarely leaves my side. My work has evolved to such a place that I know what I love and what makes me work harder. Increasingly I find myself being drawn to interiors, food and product photography, and connecting with creatives that both push and share my creative visions. I have worked with Outland Denim, Imagine Holidays, launched a book - 'The Black and White Braid', had my work featured in The Guardian, Escape Travel, Australian Geographic, Pump Magazine, chatted with the good folks over on ABC’s Radio National, and of course am lucky enough to contribute to this divine publication, Scenic Road Magazine. Stephanie Don Art Director I grew up on Tamborine Mountain in a house that my dad built when I was four. I spent my childhood here drawing, painting and diving into any craft I could. If the scissors were missing it was always me, cutting and pasting yet again. After studying graphic design I worked in the fashion industry in marketing, for five years, growing my skills in a fast paced environment. It was then I decided to start my own studio, St. Clement Creative which has blossomed over the last six years. St. Clement is named after the long line of strong females in my family who have passed my middle name down to me. As a studio I specialise in story telling through branding, book and magazine design, photography styling and illustration. My style is inspired by the simplicity of nature, colours of the region and connecting to the message. After having our daughter Lilly last year, I have moved back to the Mountain with my husband David and furry dog Disco, to the red soil and the orchestra of birds every morning. The magic of this place brings me joy daily! Looking forward to reconnecting with this special region I am lucky enough to call home, back as a mother and designer. with Stephanie & Gareth Jones

How long have you lived on the Mountain? Stephanie: I grew up on the Mountain and my family heritage dates back to pioneering times, with my great, great grandfather, Stanley Rosser being one of the early settlers. Gareth grew up 'down the road' in Canungra. What brought you here? S: After meeting each other as young adults, we moved to Europe for Gareth's career and ended up staying there for 9 years, before returning home to Australia. Gareth: We knew we wanted to live close to family, particularly to participate in our niece and nephew's childhood, so we bought the property from my uncle. The land has always been important to us, as my grandmother 'Mere', who grew up here, played such an important role in my childhood and so it holds deep sentimental significance to us both. It's really the only place we could imagine laying our roots. What was the inspiration and what influenced the design? S: We started with the ground work in 2016, establishing the gardens first. The layout of the property was planned in micro detail - considering the seasons and sun's movements throughout the year. The house began in 2020 just as Covid hit, business halted and we finally had the time to build. We have watched Grand Designs as a couple for many years, discussing what our dream house would look like, so the design came very organically. Our time in Europe heavily influenced our ideas, as we wanted to bring a little of what we called ‘home’ back with us. EDITION 7

How long did it take to build your beautiful home? S: Gareth's skills as a builder meant we were able to realise quite an unusual style and complicated project; we executed everything from the foundations up; from architecturals, structural work, painting to fit-out... with a little help from our tradie mates. G: For most of the build it was just us and Steph's dad, our mums helping with painting and cooking hot meals to keep us going. We feel very blessed to have such great family and friends to support us! From the start of ground works to moving in, it took us just over a year. Upon completion, we felt an overwhelming satisfaction that every nail and little detail was done with our own two hands. Your furniture and antiquities are divine.... where did you find a lot of them?

S: Most of our house has been repurposed from garage sales, markets and auction houses both overseas and locally. You wouldn't believe what you can find by looking online! We wanted to give a second life to the things we bought and we feel that it makes the house more homely and 'lived in' for a new build. Favourite tunes on a Sunday morning? G: Our music taste is varied, but if we're not working or in the farm. On a slow Sunday morning, we'll be playing some kind of cruisy mixed soundtrack. Favourite features of the home? S: Our favourite and also the hardest part of our house to execute was the front vista design, as we needed to maintain symmetry throughout - staying true to the traditional Georgian rules. Our front vista includes set-back French doors and windows which maintains an exact proportion, even down to the panes of glass. Favourite season? S: My favourite season is Autumn after the heat of summer, everything slows down - most importantly the weeds. G: Steph loves Winter and Spring, mainly for how dynamic the gardens look. We have formal deciduous trees so the aspect is beautifully stark in winter and then bursts into colourful life come spring. What is next for your property? S: With great excitement we are able to announce that The Grounds Estate will be opening soon for weddings and special events. Having been in the events industry for the past several years it was something we hoped to achieve, and so we look forward to welcoming our first couples in the not too distant future! Monique Quarantini SCENIC RIM ARTIST

Sitting in Monique Quarantini’s art studio is like sitting in Aladdin’s cave. A bohemian treasure trove of bits and bobs collected from all over the globe. From Scenic Rim’s very own Beechmont, to turquoise pieces from the foothills of Montana and collectibles from upstate New York. For this visionary potter and artist, collecting and creating has been a beautiful zig-zagging odyssey to date. Growing up in Sydney’s Manly, Monique knew she was destined for a creative future and began her creative journey studying fashion design. Whilst she didn’t pursue it, it’s obvious fashion made quite the impression: she sits in front of me, a bohemian vision in her flowing Zimmerman gown and striking, Egyptian-like statement earrings that jingle with her every movement, a personality of their very own that seem to match her joie de vivre. It was romance that saw a young Monique relocating to Queensland, having fallen in love with a potter. It was alongside him that she commenced “learning on the job”, working as a production potter. She was paid on a per piece 'basis', “I made 50 cents my first week; even during the 1980s that’s not a lot,” she laughs. 14

It was during that time though that she had one of those wonderful ah-ha moments that life occasionally throws us. Decorating pots had become her passion, and she knew it was time to move on from being a production potter. She studied under Errol Barnes owner of Lyrebird Ridge Pottery in Springbrook, someone Monquie cites as one of her greatest influences. Her new mentor saw her for the immense talent that she is, having been given the creative freedom decorating his pots, her work and skills flourished both on and off the wheel. Humble though she might be, her talents are far-reaching; and she began working with charcoal and taught herself the art of mark making (sketching) and 'searching for line,' as she calls it.

When asked what it is that appeals to her the most about drawing, for Monique it’s the immediacy. Results are instant in comparison to the many drawn out steps involved with the processes of pottery. In 2018, encouraged by good friend and fellow artist Sharon McLeod, Monique applied for a one-week intensive painting course at the illustrious COSM visual arts school in upstate New York. Unsurprising to all but herself, Monique secured a place in the program over hundreds of other hopeful artists alongside Sharon. Monique found the course to be deeply transformative and allowed her to tap into “sacred” art, something that very much informs her work today; creations that are inspired by the seasons, connection to spirit and place, and the metamorphosis of both nature and self. Thankfully for this now - Tamborine local, she doesn’t need to look very far for inspiration; this oasis she calls home, is surrounded by nature. As her works so beautifully reflects, she welcomes the changing of seasons and has made a ritual of walking to local waterfalls and reconnecting with the earth beneath her feet and diving into the waters, no matter the frigidity. So thankfully, there is no chance of the outflow of creativity stopping anytime soon.

at home with Yana and Eddie In what feels like tumultuous and unpredictable times, both economically and environmentally, we sat down with Tamborine locals, Yana, Eddie and their son Aaron, who have transformed their property from being barren and parched to a sustainable tropical oasis. Yana gave us some tips on how we can all become less reliant on mass agricultural systems, and happy knowing where our food is coming from. When did you move to the property? What was the

novices! For the absolute beginner who wants to get started, we would recommend raised garden beds or self-watering wicking beds, which you can build yourself quite cheaply. With these methods you can control the growing conditions (soil quality, moisture, pest control etc.) more easily than planting directly into the ground. And you’ll be surprised just how much fresh herbs and veggies you can grow in a small space.

quality of the soil like, and did you have to start crops We moved out here in the beginning of 2019 and we have had our share of problems with the property. Originally this area was cattle pasture and previously it was a horse property, so when we arrived the soil was compacted and depleted of nutrients. The wasn’t much life in the soil. The only edible thing growing here when we arrived was a small mandarin tree and a banana tree. So far, we have planted over 80 varieties of fruit trees and over 2000 native trees. What have been the biggest challenges you have faced? Much of the property is sloping, so we’ve had to deal with erosion during heavy rains. However, we’ve stabilised the slopes and designed the property to slow down the water flow, redirecting it into the soil. We came out of the last set of big rains without too much damage. Also, the property was overgrown with noxious weeds, so that was something we also had to overcome. Did you have previous experience in gardening, planting

and harvesting, or have you learnt through trial and error? I grew up helping my Mum and Grandma in the garden in the summer months back in Russia. It was very common for most of our food to come from our own veggie gardens so that knowledge was very important. We would grow potatoes, cabbages, corn, beans, cucumbers, eggplant, carrots, beetroot, tomatoes and herbs, as well as various fruits and berries. We preserved a lot of our produce for winter and stored excess veggies in a cellar. However, I’ve had to relearn how to garden to suit Australia’s unique climate and conditions. What worked in Russia didn’t necessarily work here. Eddie didn’t have much experience in the garden, so he’s been learning a lot these last few years. What motivated you to start growing your own produce? After moving back to Australia, we realised that we were completely dependent on the agricultural system for our food but, at the same time, this system is completely unsustainable and damaging to our environment; degrading our soils, polluting our water and air and so on. So, we started thinking more about self-sufficiency and sustainable living. This became even more important and urgent after the birth of our son. We wanted to do whatever we could to minimise our impact on our environment. EDITION 7

Plant densely and cover your soil with a thick layer of mulch (e.g. sugar cane mulch) to protect the soil from overheating and losing moisture. Diversity is important for adding different nutrients into the soil and confusing pests - mix up your veggies. Add some herbs and flowers to attract pollinators and beneficial bugs. But the most important advice is to just start planting, observing and experimenting because “your best teacher is your last mistake.”

In your opinion how important is it being self-sufficient? We are living in uncertain times. Globalisation and just-in-time supply chains are very vulnerable to disruptions. We’ve seen some of this during the last 2 years with Covid. Being more self-sufficient or community-sufficient will help us with rising food costs, food shortages and food quality, so it gives you peace of mind. Being self-sufficient also means lessening our impact on natural resources and protecting our environment for future generations. An added bonus is that we both just love working on the land, it’s rewarding and good for the soul. What are your plans for the property in the future? We would like to expand what we are currently doing, i.e. build more swales, extend our food forest and native forest, build more wicking beds, plant more fruit trees etc. Some other projects in the near future include beekeeping and growing mushrooms. If things continue as planned, we would like to sell excess produce and maybe even open a small outdoor café using fresh produce from our land. COMING HOME

For Tamborine Mountain locals, the surname Youngman is synonymous with history. Having spent many years living abroad before returning to their roots, Samantha & Ian Youngman are the new custodians of the Youngman home and property, Tallaringa. We sat down with them to find out what life has been like since returning to Australia, just before Covid hit our shores in 2019. 18

Can you please give a brief history of the home, when it

was built, and what it was used for (from local knowledge we are led to believe it was Vonda’s Doctor’s surgery)?

It is a very special year for our old home, turning 100 this year! The house and garden were first developed in 1922 by Ernest Curtis who planted many of the large trees that dominate the garden today. Tallaringa was purchased by the Youngman family as a weekender in mid 1956 (however they enjoyed mountain life so much they moved permanently later that year). When Vincent & Vonda Youngman renovated it was clear that in those days the view was not the focus with a non-existent Gold Coast skyline. The old house had opaque windows and stood on stumps only 6 inches clear of the ground. After renovating and raising the house, Vonda established the Tamborine Mountain Medical Practice within their home (today it is our laundry with a little nod to the history of the room with the original sign up on the wall) Vincent & Vonda’s son, John and wife Christine took over Tallaringa in 1984 and renovated the house extensively. They expanded the garden to the East and South with the southern garden completed in 2000. Over the next 3 decades thousands of people would walk through the beautiful gardens they had created through the Australia Open Gardens Scheme and it was considered a regional highlight. Numerous concerts and weddings have also been held in the gardens over the last 15 years. Ian, being the son of John and Christine, you must have

spent a lot of time here growing up. What are your most fond memories of the property?

I feel so lucky to have grown up here. It truly was an unrestrained childhood with my days spent in nature exploring the rainforests, riding horses and disappearing for hours with my friends over the shelf. It was such a tightknit community, everyone knew everyone back in those days, there was a freedom and wildness which I remember appreciating, even as a child. When did you start living here? How long had you been

abroad for, and Samantha what was it like working as an Interior Designer in NYC? What brought you home as family?

We moved back to Australia in late 2019 after 12 years living in Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK and the USA. During those years Ian was working in technology for a global enterprise and I was an Interior Designer in New York (in between bringing up three children). We both were yearning for a more meaningful way of life and that sparked the need for change in us (some might call this a mid-life crisis!). We knew we always wanted to settle in Australia but where and how had eluded us until our focus shifted to a tree change and the first visualisations of returning to live in Australia on a mountaintop behind the sea were born. 20

It was a fortuitous move given we arrived home 3 months before the first murmurings of what would become COVID19. To have 25 acres to isolate on and for our children to be part of nature during a time when we had to be “locked up” was unbelievably good luck. We love your aesthetic! How much did you renovate, and were there any “must keeps” in order to pay homage to the original home?

To be honest we originally planned on knocking the whole place down and starting again, as with any old house the job felt huge and the house didn’t take full advantage of some of the best aspects of this property. But in knocking the existing home down we would be demolishing so much amazing history. We decided to work with what we had, pouring our hearts and souls into renovating the old Queenslander that has now sat on this land for 100 years! Sam what inspires your design work? When I look around my own home it is filled with pieces with so much meaning. I have collections and bits and bobs I have picked up along the way on our travels. Everything reminds me of a place or a moment in time, an inherited gift makes me think of the person who first bought it. Seeing and feeling the personality of a person in their home inspires me more than anything.

I’m also incredibly inspired by colour. I am a true colourist and couldn’t live without colour in my life. If you are looking for white on white I am not the designer for you! What do you love the most about the Scenic Rim and being back in Australia?

The Scenic Rim is truly such a special region with so much to offer. As a child growing up in a region plagued by perpetual drought, I never wanted to live somewhere where water or lack of it was an issue. One of the things I love most about Tamborine Mountain in particular is the climate. The rainfall is high, the grass is green, nature surrounds us, it is serene and peaceful. We are a world away from our life lived on the edge of New York City. I now spend my days on our mower, looking out to the Pacific Ocean, listening to the birds instead of sirens and I have never been more content. Without a doubt the greatest gift has been the amazing garden we are now the custodians of. Ian’s parents put their hearts & souls into developing the garden over the past 30 years and now we get to continue this legacy with beautiful established plants and outdoor spaces. Our intention is to make our little part of the world as beautiful and purposeful as we can make it, together. We are in the early stages of developing what we now call

Michelle is a vibrant, positive with a can-do kind of personality. When we first started working with Michelle and talking about her store in our Magazine, she often tabled her vision of taking My Country Escape to a whole new level. By that she meant, making it a destination experience. POND TO PLATE Curiosity on a number of drive-by occasions, has seen my Toyota Landcruiser slow in speed as I try to get a peak of the new Redclaw Crayfish Farm on Beaudesert-Nerang Road, and I know I’m not alone. When the opportunity arose to make this a purposeful visit and not just a nosey parker call- in, we jumped at the chance to sit with one of the owners and operator Alex van Velzen, to uncover the story behind the Scenic Rim’s newest Ag Tourism and Primary Producer development, Australian Sweetwater Crays.

For those of us who like the stats, Australian Sweetwater Crays operates out of a 50-hectare property, with 4 hectares of ponds and 4 more hectares in the pipeline over the next few years. The van Velzen family started building the crayfish farm in late 2020 and were selling redclaw by Christmas 2021. Completely off-grid and equipped with industrial solar and batteries, the farm is also extremely light on water usage. All the water for the dams is collected from rain runoff from the surrounding hills into a 100ML holding dam. The nutrient rich water from the redclaw ponds is treated and recycled on site with no wastewater leaving the property boundaries. The farm currently harvests about 100kg/week and with the hope they will increase to 200kg/week over the coming year. Here is our interview with the quick-witted and delightful young farmer Alex. As a Chemical Engineer, what made you want to go into Crayfish farming? How did that even happen?

I stumbled upon a redclaw farm for sale near Gympie, and I met to the owner (who was an ex-Chemical engineer) and we got talking. It sounded like a great lifestyle with decent profitability and lots of freedom. We almost bought his farm but decided to start from scratch closer to home, so here we are. 29

How long did you search for the perfect property We looked at over 100 properties between Gympie, Toowoomba, and NSW over a 10-month period before finding this property on our doorstep. We got very lucky as it is so close to the family home on Mt Tamborine and satisfies almost all of the criteria for a successful redclaw farm (topography, soil type, road access, water catchment etc).

Many interesting avenues have opened up just by us putting ourselves out there and sometimes we have completely changed focus because of an informal conversation. capital to start a farm from scratch, and we had to go through almost 3 years of planning and approvals, but once you are up and running it is relatively easy. Most farms are run by just one or two people and do quite well. I hope that we see more people getting into redclaw in the future as the industry is quite small at the moment and many existing farmers are likely to retire in the next 5 to 10 years. What are your plans for the future of the farm? We will keep expanding our ponds to increase redclaw production. We also hope to put a café/restaurant at the entrance to the farm in the next few years which will double as a shop for selling our redclaw. We agist sheep and cattle on the property at the moment but we will get our own soon and plan to offer lamb to the public and supply our restaurant once it’s up and running. WATER CRAYS Gathering your family and friends around a table or open camp-fire is as old as time itself. After a terrible start to the year, losing their family home in the Northern Rivers February floods, we decided to treat Scenic Road family members Jonathan, Stefanie, and their beautiful daughter Mia to an experience like no other. With their 1998 Landrover Defender packed and at the ready, we sent them off road tripping to Hipcamp’s latest campsite listing, in the Scenic Rim of course! Their destination? None other than Australian Sweetwater Crays to experience a little Scenic Rim hospitality first-hand. Hipcamp Host and Farmer Alex was there to give them a warm welcome to his property while also offering up some delicious Redclaw crayfish. So here it is, Redclaw prepared three ways over hot coals. Enjoy!

Preparing the Crays Once you’ve picked up your live order from Alex’s farmgate shed, preparing Redclaw crayfish is no different to preparing any other live crustacean. Just pop the live catch into a freezer or submerge in a bucket of ice and leave to sleep for 20min. Then simply pop the crays whole into boiling water for 7-8 minutes, then drain ready and cut open to serve with lemon and salt. Alternatively, after your crays have gone to sleep in the freezer, split the raw crayfish down the center with a sharp knife, the same as you would for bugs, and grill flesh down in a hot pan or skillet until meat turns from opaque to firm and white, this usually only takes a few minutes. Grill or saute in garlic butter, a squeeze of lemon juice and Alex’s hot tip, a drizzle of honey to serve. Delish! But what to do with the left over claws and heads? Even though there is no meat in the head, there is plenty of flavour! See Alex’s family favourite, Redclaw bisque soup on the opposite page. Delish!

Redclaw Bisque Soup Ingredients Heads and claws of 1kg Redclaw

Ginger

2 onions finely diced

2 tablespoons brown sugar

5 carrots finely diced

Sweet paprika

Oil (vegetable or similar)

Chilli

1 bottle of white wine

Salt

½ head of garlic diced

Pepper

Lemon juice

Method

Add the onions, garlic, oil, and salt to a pot and cook with the lid on until caramelised.

Add the Redclaw heads and carrots, put enough water in so that all the Redclaw are submerged.

Bring to the boil and then simmer on a low heat until the carrots are soft enough to cut with a spoon (about 30 mins).

Pour into a blender and blend. This will extract more flavour from the Redclaw heads.

Pour through a fine sieve into a pot and bring back to simmer.

Add the wine, lemon juice, pepper, paprika, ginger, sugar, chilli and simmer for at least 30 mins.

Taste and adjust to your liking.

(Optional) Can cook the tails in this mixture if you like.

Serve in cups or bowls with a dollop of sour cream and fresh white bread and butter.

Congratulations! We hear that your single, 'Simple Girl', recently hit #1 on itunes, your second "hit" to date! That must be quite the "pinch-me" moment?

Haha - yes thank you! It's funny because after 'Pretty' (my first single) hit number 1, I had put all of this pressure on us to try and replicate that, even though I know it's not sustainable. So I was quite anxious leading up to the day of release and then to see it hit number 1 on both the All Genres & Country charts was a pretty relieving moment. To see me sitting there in front of the likes of Lady Gaga & One Direction... it was quite unbelievable. There is always a part of me wondering how it happened though. My next goal is to try and get the actual song to 1 and not just the video, it's all part of the journey When you were a young girl, who did you imagine you would be like musically?

Musically I really had no idea. I grew up listening to Meatloaf, Cat Stevens (Yusef Islam) and Laura Branigan (whom after my mum named me) who are all really different musically! And as a teenager I adored Pink, but also Punk Rock bands like Fall Out Boy & Kisschasey. Then there was the Country phase where I would listen to 'Kasey Chambers' - The Captain on repeat. I have always had a very eclectic taste in music and I think that has found its way into what I create now. I didn't think I'd be making 'Country' music and in my early days I was singing Indie, Folk and Pop tunes. It's taken me a long time to find my sound and I think it will always evolve and develop as time goes on. As an artist I want to make music that resonates with me at the time. I don't feel like I need to necessarily 'fit' anywhere.

As long as I'm making tunes that people can relate to and it helps them create a soundtrack to their lives and special moments - that's enough for me. I just want to make people 'feel' something. Has country music always been your preferred genre of music to sing?

No. My voice has always naturally led itself to Country Music but I shied away from singing it for a long time. I didn't dream of being a 'country' artist. When I was growing up the genre was 'very' Country... I didn't particularly love it. But I think the genre has evolved so much over time there has been a huge shift! I do love singing it now because I've grown into my voice and my vocal quality, and I can really play to its strength. I know when I can add in some tonal things to hopefully give the crowd those goosebumps we all want! But really, I just love singing. Although I don't do it so much for fun anymore, I really should try singing for fun sometime!

I think my journey to country music has really been because of the quality of my voice rather than the specific content of the music, and my ability to use my voice to its advantage. I love that Country music as a whole has so many more sub- genres these days. I like to walk the line of being a 'country artist', I don't want to be in that specific box. If I write a rock song... then I write a rock song. If I write an Indie pop song, I write an indie pop song, but it probably won't get released because it's not 'on brand'. So, when I'm writing, I don't really think about whether it's a 'Country' song or not. I like to just express myself and see what happens. If it's a song that's right for Laura Frank, then brilliant! If it's not, then we might record a demo of it and release it to my Patreon fans.

This changes every time! 'Simple Girl' for example, started with some very basic chords. I then wrote the first verse (usually lyric and melody at the same time). After that I took the guitar to Nick, he made it sound so much better and we just kept writing from there! But with 'Pretty,' I wrote the chorus to that song in the car with only a handful of lyrics and basic melody. That song took us two years to complete (unheard of) we just couldn't get it right. So it really depends. Often Nick will come to me with a little chord progression, I'll hum or make weird sounds over it and then lyrics will pop out. You’re so busy, working as a P.T as well as musician, how do you find the balance?

Balance? What's balance? Haha I have really just been flying by the seat of my pants which is something I'm working on changing. The last couple of years things have been so turbulent that balance has been really difficult to achieve. I have taken a step back from the gym and only fill in when needed now. Full-time music really is full time at the moment. I find it really difficult to switch off and find downtime. I'm working on that with my therapist! What’s next for Laura Frank? Well, my focus for this year is to release more music! With C-19 everything got delayed. We had four songs recorded and ready to release and then the pandemic hit, so we had to hold off on releasing them. It was hard. There are two more releases planned for this year. We have a small tour happening at the moment to celebrate the release of 'Simple Girl' and my hope is that we will start popping up on festivals and support shows around the place. I'm really trying to just build my community fan base whilst continuing to create inspiring work.

Of course, the Scenic Rim is no stranger to artists representing its majestic landscapes (Boonah’s Margaret Olley and Canungra’s Edwin Bode immediately spring to mind), however, the award hopes to showcase the region’s beauty and unearth perhaps Australia’s next unknown talent.

Despite his relative obscurity, Russell was a major influence on the Bella Epoch and post-Impressionism which was the foundation of 20th century modern art as we know it today. Unfortunately, after losing his first wife to cancer in 1908, Russell destroyed most of his paintings and when he died in 1930, he did so without ever gaining notoriety in his home country.

Russell who was born in Darlinghurst, the son of a successful engineer, moved to London in 1881 to study at the Slade School of Art. He developed a close friendship with Van Gogh whilst he studied at Atelier Cormon from 1885 to 1887. He met Monet in 1886 when he visited Belle-Île, a French island off the coast of Brittany. Russell painted with Matisse during the Summers of 1896 and 1897. During these meetings, Matisse learned about the Impressionist approach to colour from him.

Known as Australia's “lost impressionist,” not much is known of Russell’s work despite being the Australian artist at the centre of the Impressionist movement in the late 19th Century.

The landscape art prize is open to artists across the region and beyond, and will culminate in the finalists being selected by a panel of judges, including lawyer Ron Behlau, who recently judged the Queensland College of Art’s prestigious Behlau Murakami Grant Portraiture Art Prize earlier this year.

Artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Matisse are ubiquitous when it comes to 20th Century Art. But what of the name, John Peter Russell.

MURWILLUMBAH FLOODS Story by Jon Thomas | Images by Carin Garland Resilience can be defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.” This was widespread during the February 2022 flooding in Murwillumbah and surrounding Northern Rivers communities, who endured a disastrous flood event. As communities banded together in supporting the recovery efforts our beloved Northern Rivers experienced a second flood in as many weeks. Left isolated and with extensive damage, locals faced a long and arduous recovery, from not just one, but two floods. Not to be defeated, you could still find a smiling face amongst the mud and debris. The last few years hit our communities with a myriad of challenges from droughts, bushfires, pandemic, state borders closures and floods. Without a doubt, we have all felt the impacts of these events and navigated the unwanted challenges, which is what gives me a great amount of respect for the empathetic and positive attitudes I saw from so many in what was an overwhelming and back breaking flood event. If you haven’t experienced the impacts of floods or natural disaster, it can be quite foreign to comprehend the experience and understand how best to support those that have. Personally, while the sounds, sight and feeling of watching the flood waters inundate our family home will stay with me, it was the amount of people who reached out to offer us help that is something I will never forget. Our ability to just ‘be there’ for people is one of our greatest actions. For many people, young and old, these experiences can leave long lasting trauma, anxiety and stresses as we all process and deal with the various emotions differently. Which is a timely reminder to lend an ear and check in on people, even months down the track. On the evening of February 27th, like many others I returned home to prepare for a major flood event that was forecasted to be ‘at or below the 2017 flood level.” For Murwillumbah, at that time, March 2017 was the worst recorded flood and the current bench mark for preparations. By Monday February 28th flood waters had surpassed the 2017 levels and would continue to rise above forecasted levels, breaking all records and leaving many families, businesses and community members devastated. The Murwillumbah town levee of 6.3m would be topped, exposing areas of the CBD to inundation while surrounding areas would experience landslides, road failures and major infrastructure damages with some repairs quoted in excess of two years. At the height of the event, local evacuation centres would take in hundreds of residents, elderly and animals in what was a major logistical challenge. Emergency services would work around the clock to manage an overwhelming amount of 000 calls for help while many of our local first responders, who were also affected, would leave their flood impacted

homes, businesses and families to render assistance to their communities. In the days that followed as the flood waters receded, civilians, volunteers and emergency services would continue to provide support to their communities and help where they could with many people multitasking day and night. This epitomises the community spirit, with many people wearing many hats to help each other and embodying the quintessential Australian spirit. When road access was returned, Murwillumbah and surrounding areas had an influx of volunteers from an array of places including Queensland, Scenic Rim and beyond, along with the deployment of the Australian Defence Force. There was a volunteer hub setup opposite Knox Park that coordinated the civilian volunteer efforts and donations, while many other community groups opened their doors. There was an incredible amount of genuine empathy, with ordinary humans doing extraordinary things. There are many stories of kind people driving around and giving out cooked meals, clothes and medication. While some chose to help people clean their homes, remove debris and mud, others simply lended an ear and offered support or a place to sleep. As many residents will say, the recovery from these events takes time, months or years. Not every person, family or business will fully recover, nor do some have the luxury of time or age. The many hardships do take their toll both physically, emotionally and financially. However for many, this is home. Murwillumbah is a historical town resting on Bundjalung country split by the Tweed River with it’s beautiful Wollumbin back drop. Simple Secrets To Prepare Your Home for Quick Sale

I went to view a house as a buyer last week and instantly saw so much missed potential. The windows and doors were closed, the blinds were down, window dressings were missing, all the overhead lights were on, the list goes on. The key to a successful quick sale is to prepare the home so that the potential owners can imagine themselves moving in without having to do a thing. They need to be instantly emotionally invested in the look and more importantly the feel of their new home. 1. CREATE FLOW – Open the doors, windows, blinds, allow the natural light and fresh air to shift stale energy. Ensure furniture placement enables ease and accessibility. Introduce round objects if you have a house full of squares/rectangles. 2. DECLUTTER – Less of your stuff means plenty of potential for their precious belongings. Remove personal items such as photographs, clothing and nick knack accessories. Clear hall ways, remove “paper.” Clutter. Stops. Flow. 3. AROMATICS – Smell is the most powerful of all the senses. You and your home have a smell, which makes the space feel territorial. Bring in the fresh air, smudge if you see fit, avoid strong chemical, sweet smells. Simple aromas such as citrus are powerful motivators when it comes to spending money. 4. LIGHTING – “The jewellery of the home.” For high use areas such as the kitchen overhead lighting with daylight globes works well. For relaxing spaces, use a range (sizes, heights, styles) of lamps with warm globes to create beautiful ambiance and warmth. 5. PLANTS – An inexpensive, easy, beautiful addition to any home. AUTHENTICITY – The presentation goal is for somewhere half way between your home as you know it and a show home. Make it feel real, lived in, inviting and comfortable. 7. Outside it’s raining. Again. The weather is frigid. I am hyper aware of a blanket being placed across me. I am doing my best to focus my attention on my breath. In through the mouth, out through the mouth. Diaphragm, chest, exhale. Repeat. The sounds of the rain against the window distracts me. I estimate how long I have been breathing for. Thirty minutes? My mind wanders to my busy schedule. Mentally calculating how on God’s green earth I am going to fit all my photoshoots in this month. In this weather!

The unjustness of it all. Yet here they are, almost 6 years later, bubbling to the surface and flowing down my cheeks. The relief I feel to let go and release is immeasurable. The reassuring voice of Réanne Goes is in my ear. I am safe. I am cared for. I am in good hands. And so, for the first time, I don’t run from the emotions. I lean into them.

Whilst breathing is the most vital thing that keeps us alive, somehow so many of us in our busy, harried lives have forgotten (much less learned) how to breathe beyond anything that is superficial. The history of the horse spans over 55 million years on this planet as a species. In relatively modern terms the Equus genome, domesticated by mankind, has survived the millennia, proving a loyal friend throughout the ages.

stockman and rural families as they have always done but it is our interest in horses in sport that have created the modern day horse industries that continue to see horse numbers flourish.

In Australia the relationship between horse and man pioneered the expansion and development of our great country. The horse arrived at our shores in 1788 with the first fleet. The English bringing the first domesticated horses for the grand endeavour to settle Australia and explore her broad landscape.

In Australia it is estimated that there are around 400,000 wild horses. Out of the many breeds in the country it is estimated that the thoroughbred accounts for around a quarter of the horse numbers in the country. Australia is the worlds second largest thoroughbred breed nation and features over 660 Stud Farms mostly located upon the eastern seaboard.

From transportation, sport, exploration, farm work and war this magnificent animal has served us well. Even in the early settlement days horses were imported and used for recreational riding and of course racing. Consider the expense of transport at the time and the difficulties and risks of crossing the world by sea. Estimated numbers of around 200 by the year 1800 and 160,000 by 1850 demonstrates just how heavily Australians relied on the horse in the early days. The horses flourished and formed the foundation of the breeds made famous in stories of early Australia. Being the fetcher and carrier, tiller of fields, weapon of war, bearer of bandits or a friend on a journey. A typical day in the life of the horse. Today there are millions of horses spread throughout Australia. Today you will see horse and rider galloping across the same fields where once they worked a plow just for the sheer pleasure of it. Of course in rural Australia the horse still has an everyday job tending to the needs of the

Why would you want to live anywhere else? 2022 year to date has very much been a continuation of the real estate market conditions seen in 2021. In a sentence – great for property owners looking to sell and capitalise on their property investments. As far as the Scenic Road Properties team is concerned, there is no reason to believe the Queensland property market is in any threat of going backwards. In fact, history shows us that Queensland is a very stable market not subject to rash price adjustments. Just because Sydney and Melbourne have suffered a little adjustment, after 10 years of price growth, doesn’t mean doom and gloom for Qlder’s. In fact Queensland markets would tend to usually thrive in these conditions. The ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) just last month produced their annual population movement data and the winner is clear. Queensland is leading the nation in net interstate migration and population growth overall. Not just leading but clearly dominating the other states as the number 1 destination for Australians. Add to this, a good job supply with plenty of skilled labour openings and the short supply of properties should mean any retraction in the real estate market is unlikely for now. These conditions mean buyers need to be organised ahead of time so that when the opportunity to secure the perfect property presents, it won’t pass them by. As every seller is a buyer, it is important that sellers are also organised.

There is always the fear of the unknown for the seller trying to buy when it appears everything just sells overnight. But don’t be discouraged, be prepared. Be prepared to sell to buy. You will find agents will get easier to deal with regarding these clauses as this year progresses. Whilst interest rates are climbing, financiers will be more stringent on requiring properties to be sold prior to unconditional finance approvals and buyers will be less inclined to arrange expensive bridging loans. Kate Raymont Renowned Food Ambassador for the Scenic Rim, Chef and Mother. The quaint village of Canungra first captured Kate Raymont’s heart over 20 years ago. Looking for a place to lay down their roots and raise two young girls, saw Kate and her family purchase a vacant block of land and build a beautiful family home. The gorgeous two storey Queenslander style home, with swimming pool and veggie garden was recently marketed and Sold by Scenic Road Properties Principal Agent Drew Slack-Smith and area Specialist George Cook. In a relaxed photographic interview at Kate’s home, she shares some of her story with photographer and Creative Director Carin Garland. A heartful insight into building a family home, of raising two children in a country setting and most recently, saying goodbye to years well spent at 25 Picnic Place Canungra. Tell us a bit about your home. We bought the land the day we saw it, knowing what style of house we wanted to build (Queenslander) the block had great views with the perfect amount of elevation. We designed the home ourselves but took our ideas to draftsperson to finalise the plans. Both my brothers were on hand to help build and bring this home to a reality. The process of sourcing materials was actually done before we did the plans. All the silky oak windows, antique doors, French doors as well as original fittings and eagle claw bath were procured before the plans and the build. We also wanted the natural look and feel of slate so that is a real feature in the bathrooms and complimented the redwood timber floorboards that ran throughout the house. Looking back, what have you enjoyed most about living in a country setting... I have such great memories of living in Canungra, and I think it has given my girls a strong sense of community. When the girls were in primary school, I helped set up the after school care program to assist other working parents, I also made great friends with whom we set up ‘The Green Team’ – which back then was just a few raised garden beds. We wanted to show the kids how to grow their own food, it just kept expanding to what it is today. I also enjoyed volunteering, so every Wednesday lunch time with kids I’d run cooking classes using the produce we would grow in the garden. I also remember getting involved in the Canungra Show Society, helping to organise food vendors for the Rodeo and Canungra Show. It really was lovely being involved in the community in this way and I think it has shown my two girls that living in a smaller country community really has so many benefits. You’ve been a food ambassador for the Scenic Rim for some time now, what does that entail? I am extremely honoured to be a Scenic Rim Food Ambassador. My journey with Eat Local Week began in 2012 with a FEAST dinner held at Aratula for 250 people. Most of the invitees were farmers who had been impacted by the 2011 floods so it was a lovely way of saying ‘thank you’ to them. I sourced everything on the three-course menu locally and I am happy to say that I still source from these producers now. When it came time to sell this much-loved Canungra home, why did you choose Scenic Road Properties? Because I knew on meeting Drew and Luisa, they were my people. I have loved watching their business grow, and I can appreciate how passionate they are about the region and how community focused they are. I have always admired how professional and beautiful their work was presented, right from the start there was no other choice for me.
