Editor’s Letter “Life, with Scenic Road.” What does that mean? Well for me it’s about making a conscious shift… It’s a 'good vibes only' kind of mentality. In a world where things have gotten pretty heavy, we can make a choice as to what we absorb or perhaps filter out and silence. Our Scenic Road brand is an appreciation of all that is good…the good people and their stories, a celebration of the amazing local produce, and a discovery of all the wonderous places, that you can visit or choose to live in. Life with Scenic Road, it’s a journey that you choose to take. With that said, it’s my absolute pleasure to introduce to you the newest team members who’ve helped make this edition so bloody amazing. My dear friend and ridiculously talented photographer, Carin Garland, she joins us in the role of Editor for the magazine and Creative Director for our sister company Scenic Road Properties. And the talented and lovely Alisha Pettit, our new Art Director, who actually purchased a home from our pages (who would have thought). Both of these ladies, along with our other wonderful contributors, have helped shape this Edition into the pages you see before you. I think, perhaps our best one yet. Some highlights for me were finally meeting the legendry Colleen Lavender, a woman who makes magic with metal, the exert from The Black and White Braid, a two part book that tells the stories of the people, the roads shared and the places of the Scenic Rim. Our glamping cover shoot, a stunning collaboration with Glamping Hire Co at our favourite winery The Overflow Estate, and our very pretty food shoot at the Scenic Rim Farm Shop… a Summer Fare picnic style lunch that will have you packing the car faster than it takes for one to indulge in a melting moment. Another favourite for me is our Scenic Road Trips pages, a segment that collates a list of places to EAT, STAY and PLAY in the Scenic Rim (all tried and tested by us of course). And then there is the Field Guide, a directory of trades and community services from around the region, making it easier to find the lovely businesses and community groups we so regularly partner with.
Want to be included in our next edition? Please email your interest to luisa@scenicroad.com.au or visit scenicroad.com.au
And finally I’d like to say thank you to all our advertisers, who without their support, our magazine would not exist. In particular the gentleman from BMG legal based in Southport, who have a real passion for Art and the Scenic Rim, hence their idea of running an art competition to celebrate the beautiful scenery and talents of this region. What a crazy times we have all been through this past year, with so many unknowns. One thing you can be certain of is our Scenic Road ethos. Telling stories through photographic essay, and using the kindness of words, in an inclusive and positive way… why is that important? Because I truly believe we all need to read, hear and ingest more of the good stuff in our lives. I hope you enjoy reading Edition No.6.

THE BLACK & WHITE BRAID WORDS BY BEN ALLMON AND IMAGES BY CARIN GARLAND
Boonah Rathdowney-Road Coochin Coochin Homestead c. 1840 to 1920 Evening, August 2019 We walk into the beautiful dining room, and Tim Bell pulls out a chair for Carin and then me. Arrayed on the table are books. Some are small…others are enormous, the size of a printer, and clearly scrapbooks of some kind. “This isn’t much, but it’ll give you an idea of some of the history here,” Tim says, as I leaf through the first scrapbook, coming to grips with Tim’s definition of ‘not much.' Snippets grab my attention – Gertrude ‘Granny’ Bell’s first impressions of Coochin. The sun was setting behind the glorious mountains and tingeing the wonderful crags with rose pink, whilst the distant peaks changed to opal in the afterglow. Watching it, I felt that our newfound ‘Coochin Coochin’ was indeed a paradise. Next I read her daughter Enid’s words, equally arresting. Fate had decreed that ‘Coochin Coochin’ should come into the possession of one who would bestow upon it the love and admiration it had not received since the Ugarapuls had been driven out of their beloved valley… Flipping forwards, I come to a newspaper clipping recounting a ball held in honour of Prince Edward, later King Edward VIII. The Prince danced all the dances, staying until after midnight, when there was a great crowd of people waiting outside the hall to see him. He wore evening dress and many honours, and did not wear gloves. Among the girls he danced with, were Miss Enid Bell (Coochin, Queensland), who wore shot gold and blue tissue, and gold lace… I feel a hand on my shoulder, and look up, coming back from the distant past to see Tim. “I’ll see you in the morning,” he says, squeezing my shoulder in a fatherly way, before bidding Carin goodnight. “Make sure you don’t let Polly out when you go,” he adds, looking down at said three-legged canine curled near my foot, ears laid flat and looking worried. In the distance I can hear something, like a big truck maybe, rumbling along Boonah-Rathdowney Road. “All right, I’m going to bed too,” Carin says, giving the nervous Polly a pat on the way out, and I am suddenly alone with the history, the memories, and the ticking clock. Polly moves restlessly at my feet. I wonder what it is that has her so spooked when I hear that rumble again. It
isn’t a truck, I realise. It’s thunder. There is a flash of lightning outside, followed by a rumble. Polly edges closer to me. I’m not scared, her look says, I’m just checking you’re okay. The lights flicker, and as I sit here at this beautiful cherrywood table I wonder how many people have sat in this resplendent room before me…and who they were. Am I sitting where Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh once sat when they visited in 1948? Or Agatha Christie? I look at my reflection in the window and wonder whether the Queen Mother sat here, looking at herself too, after a night of revelry and laughter. It is surreal. The man who abdicated the throne for love, left it to his younger brother and the father of our current Queen – thereby changing the course of the monarchy and history – may have sat right here…before signing his name on the wallpaper. It is at Coochin, sitting here reading long into the night, as outside thunder crashes and lightning flares purplewhite across the night sky, where the true enormity of what I am trying to do hits me. I leaf through two centuries of Bell family history…Tim’s great-great-great grandfather Archibald Bell was involved in Governor Bligh’s defenestration and was friends with Lachlan Macquarie. Archibald’s son, Tim’s great-great-great uncle Archibald Bell Jnr, found a way – with the help of local Indigenous companions – over the Blue Mountains known to this day as Bell’s Line of Road. I pore over two family tomes, each at least six inches thick with over a century of newspaper clippings, everything from Bells at local dances to Bells in wartime reports. Around me are fireplaces, hutches, dressers, and sideboards groaning under knick knacks, souvenirs, crockery, candelabras, photos of family and famous personae of other eras, paintings without number. As the rain beats a welcome tattoo on the roof after months of dry silence, I stare at the images in yellowed newspapers, history assembled in fading dot matrix, faces familiar and foreign. Did Tim say I’d need a week? I know now that I could sit at this table for a year and still only scratch the surface. I sit there, overwhelmed, my head sinking into my hands. “That’s my great-grandmother,” a voice says, one that I didn’t expect to hear in here. It is Uncle John Long, sitting next to me, the side cabinet visible through him. His finger taps – or would do, if it had substance – Legends of the Coochin Valley. Written by Enid Bell – Tim’s great-aunt – it is a compilation of cultural stories told to her by Bunjoey, whom the settlers called Susan, 'last of the Ugarapul.'

“Really?” I turn the pages of this small, fascinating book. I read about the creation of the waterholes of the Coochin Valley, dug by Yugoi – Queen Bandicoot – as she dug into the earth to escape a pack of dingoes, and how her final hole was so deep, water gushed forth, filling all the other holes and drawing fish, eels, and mooroo-coochins unto them. Such was the plentiful game of these waterholes, and the gratitude of the Ugarapul, that they composed a corroboree in her honour. I turn the page and read about Enid’s first impressions of Bunjoey, of a laughing black face that inspired instant trust in the young girl. Of Bunjoey’s love of the birds and animals she knew as friends, of how she sang the old corroboree songs to the white children and told them they were Ugarapul children, because they had been born on her country. I find an article from The Queenslander, also written by Enid, in 1934. ‘Susan knew her race before the white civilisation had swept away its customs and traditions. Though she must be 80 years old or more, the fire of life still burns brightly in her slight graceful form. As she chants the old songs of her tribe, and sways rhythmically, one hears the echoes of the thundering feet of the dancers stamping in rhythm, celebrating the great corroboree festivals—not the corroborees of modern days, regarded in the light of vaudeville entertainments, but the great sacred festivals which expressed the primitive soul of the aboriginal
people. When Susan’s soft musical voice repeats the legends of her forebears, we feel that back through unknown and unrecorded centuries a people lived who loved and feared and dreamed as we do now in the same land which then was theirs.’ I look out the window into the garden Bunjoey helped plant, see it illuminated by flashes of lightning, the past illuminated in a new way, revealing how much – and how little – things have changed. History is sometimes like the night, hiding secrets in its black velvet folds…you just have to be watching, and waiting, and looking in the right place when the lightning strikes. “She was the custodian of many memories, of so much knowledge…do you think she could pass it all on? It would take lifetimes to share what she carried. So,” he says, tapping the book again, “she shared little things that illuminated the bigger picture, and left it to others to fill in the details.” He looks at me, his eyes penetrating. “Remember, no one can hold all knowledge. The old people, they never finished a story…it was up to the listener to finish it.” I smile in understanding, the feeling of despair lifted from me, and Uncle John is gone.

THE BLACK & WHITE BRAID
Ben Allmon On a cold Winter’s morning in 2019, Tamborine Mountain local writer Benjamin Allmon and photographer Carin Garland, left their respective homes on a journey that would see them hike across the Scenic Rim for the next 30 days, walking almost 700km in that time. Across roads and paddocks, streams and mountains, together they learned the stories of the road, who they were named for and who walked them first. They listened to fourth generation farmers at breaking point during the worst drought on record, walked beside indigenous elders and witnessed the devastating bushfires of 2019 and heard the stories of the incredible men and women that fought to save their communities.
Carin Garland This hardcover book, The Black and White Braid is available to purchase via benjaminallmon.com and prints available via email caringarlandphotography@gmail.com
Together they produced a two Volume book, filled with stories of locals, history of the Scenic Rim, with images of people and places woven throughout the pages.

The gift of giving your guests a unique, relaxed and memorable experience that lasts a lifetime… these are the words spoken by the clever duo behind South East Queensland’s leading glamping hire company. Jayne and Dean Herrmann are the owners and operators of family run business Glamping Hire Co, a mobile glamping hire company servicing weddings, corporate events and private party celebrations. Taking the stress and worry out of any occasion, Jayne and her husband Dean are hands on from the initial booking and enquiry, to the final pack down. Their beautiful all-weather glamping tents, complete with furnishings and bed linen packages, can be booked from a minimum of 5 tents up to 50 – a whole village if one likes – up to 100 guests can be catered for – solving the problem for many when looking at hosting a large country style celebration. On this particular occasion, our resident photographer and stylist Carin Garland and myself, jumped at the opportunity to photograph with Glamping Hire Co for a collaborative feature article. With our car packed to the roof with local homewares, and a few nibbles, we set off to meet with Jayne and Dean at the stunning Overflow Estate 1895, located on the banks of the Wyaralong Dam. Over a shared bottle of The Overflow’s popular Tempranillo 2018, Jayne outlined their love of bringing affordable pop-up accommodation to anyone outside of the traditional inner-city. Both Jayne and Dean come from farming backgrounds and appreciate the importance of bringing people together in a rural setting. “We help bring the party to anyone in our own unique way.” Jayne continued. “To sum it up, we bring luxury camping tent hire to you!”
It is evident from our afternoon spent with Glamping Hire Co, there is passion behind their product, a service that brings people together in one location, for that exclusive special event. SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE
Colleen Lavender welcomes me onto her property with a friendly wave. I have no idea what to expect from this woman who with smudges of grease from welding across her nose, looks more mechanic than someone with a Fine Arts Bachelor degree. With a mop of lavender hair and matching work shirt, I am quick to like her with her no bars held, no frills, calling a ‘spade a spade' approach to life. As we enter her 'she shed' her passion for metal, plasma cutting and creativity is immediately apparent. Colleen’s eyes flash with a mixture of warmth and excitement, her face animated as she touches the current sculpture she’s working on for an upcoming exhibition. She treats the exquisite piece with the same love and respect she would bestow upon a family member as she shares pieces of her childhood and incredible life to date. One coloured with a hearty combination of hardship and adventure. Born in the Pilbara, growing up in the Kimberley, the raw beauty and the opportunity to adventure in her surrounds found her spending much of her time around Lake Argyle, swimming in the Ord River and participating in endurance programs on El Questro Station, all of which helped form the basis of the woman standing before me. Thankfully, both of her parents were artistic, and creativity was something encouraged rather than tamed, and at 13 Colleen’s Mother enrolled her in a jewellery course. It was then she suspects, that her love for working with metal began. During our conversation, this artist with endless amounts of energy, has moved from her plasma cutter to a metal drum and our chat finds an intermission as I stop the clicking of my camera and talking as I watch mesmerised as sparks dance around the workshop, metal melts away and the flowing mane of a horse starts to come to life. We laugh as she notes some women request jewellery for Christmas, Colleen a plasma cutter from husband Justin. Post studying horsemanship, Colleen and her children swapped life in Biddaddaba for the Northern Territory and she commenced work for Norforce where Colleen found herself training the Army mounts, ran horsemanship clinics and was a gun machine hand for a local mattress factory. I know. Not your average woman. It was in the Northern Territory where Colleen met Justin and together, they continued in the same fashion Colleen always has, seldom doing anything in halves and never shying away from a challenge. They managed Hayes Creek Inn, a self-powered Pub and Caravan Park. When Darwin would suffer through a power outage, tradies would drive over an hour to their inn knowing Justin and Colleen would have power and the ability to provide a well-earned cold beer.

It was a period that was a lot of hard work with no time for art and after three years, with a little one (Lilly) and another on the way (Aiden), they relocated back to Queensland, horses in tow. The Queenslander they had moved into was beautiful and character filled but was also showing her age. The coldest Winter in 100 years was unforgiving and the many cracks of their home haemorrhaged any stored heat, and to that end pregnant Colleen attempted her first fire pit with a grinder to help warm them up. As it turns out, it wasn’t her greatest success but refusing defeat, she went looking for
20
a means to cut steel and it was then that the request for a plasma cutter was made. That was four years ago and she has been cutting ever since. After 35 years of being heavily involved with all things equestrian; polocrosse, campdrafting and dressage to name a few disciplines, it is her love of horses that keeps her inspired and growing as a person and artist. For Colleen they are her forever muse and making lifesize sculptures, for years to come is what she aspires to. Creating wild and dynamic creatures, a reflection in my opinion, of the incredible artist herself.

The Art of Law
When ART and LAW come together in one space. IMAGES BY CARIN GARLAND | WORDS BY LUISA SLACK-SMITH It’s not often you walk into a busy law practice and find yourself immersed in an industrial style ARTspace. A carefully curated Art gallery showcasing a dozen or so pieces by Australia's most acclaimed artists, it can easily be said, this is no ordinary law firm, nor are the partners who run it.
This year the subject matter for the Portraiture Prize is wrongful convictions. Criminal Law Partner Ron Behlau developed the idea for the Prize to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Murakami’s establishment of the internationally renowned Innocence Project at Griffith University on the Gold Coast.
The firm's sleek modern industrial design and collaborative approach to the Behlau Murakami Grant ARTspace, was spawned by Family Law Partner Jason Murakami.
“Portraiture is one of our favourite forms of painting and given the anniversary and our involvement in the work the Project does to help free innocent people, we thought it fitting to make this year’s subject matter one which is close to our hearts."
“My partners Ron Behlau, Shane Grant and I all have a real belief in the importance of the arts and the role it plays in society so where we can, we like to give back to that sector.”
And now these avant-garde lawyers are opening their ARTSpace to the Scenic Rim with the announcement of a prestigious inaugural art prize next year.
Such is their passion for the Arts, that this year, Behlau The 2022 Behlau Murakami Grant Landscape Art Prize Murakami Grant in conjunction with the Queensland College of Art, announced its annual Portraiture Prize which will be offered to artists depicting the landscape from the Scenic Rim. is the largest undergraduate portraiture prize in the state. 24

In a homage to Australian artist Margaret Olley’s works from her time at Boonah in the 1960’s, the art prize is intended to put the regions beauty and artists on show. Commercial litigation Partner Shane Grant said the award offering would also re-ignite interest in the landscape painting form and draw greater attention to the region. “Covid has had a very negative effect on the fine arts, and we hope that the Prize will showcase the talent that the Scenic Rim has to offer." “The exhibition of the works gives an opportunity for Scenic Rim artists to have their work on public display.” “We are excited to see iconic Scenic Rim landscapes imortailised for this exhibition.” The finalists of the 2022 Behlau Murakami Grant Landscape Art Prize will have their works exhibited at the Behlau Murakami Grant ARTSpace at Southport, Gold Coast before the announcement of the winner in October 2022. GUANABA 58 Collaroy Road For sale Having lived on the Gold Coast for 18 years it was a simple day out in the car that Simon and Glenda 'stumbled' across what would become their property in Guanaba Valley. Tucked away in a secluded pocket at the end of a cul-de-sac, it was a hidden gem, says Simon, and a quiet oasis in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast. It wasn’t just the privacy and quiet that appealed to creative duo Simon and Glenda. The original landowner was a nurseryman and had planted over 20 Cuban Royal palms that now mature, are generously dotted around the property, adding to the feeling of living in tropical paradise. The relationship and vision the nurseryman had with the property made it feel more garden than paddock and Simon and Glenda have continued caring and contributing to the growth of the gardens. Unlike many surrounding properties that are quite long and narrow, theirs is more square than rectangle, giving them a broader exposure to the beautiful river at the back of the property.
Collectively they have travelled extensively. After many trips to Europe and the United States, the Pacific and pre-Covid often traversing from one side of Australia and back again, it was the Valley of Guanaba that felt like home the most. Playful as much as architecturally considered, the design of the home came organically, a building up of layers as a suggestion from either Simon or Glenda and would lead to a fusion of ideas and a collaboration with select tradesmen. Throughout their stunning home, parts of their individual personalities have been woven into the design, inspiration from their travels distilled into it. The soaring ceiling, with its clean lines, a nod to modern architecture and the mezzanine library with its bespoke bookshelves made of recycled hardwood, reminiscent of attic spaces in Europe. Glenda herself designed the unique balustrading, complete with almost 30 meters of wrought iron, in an exquisite gumnut leaf motif. Each baluster was hand beaten and shaped and is also featured in the French style balcony window of the home office.

It is clear that perfecting this home has been a creative pursuit for both Simon and Glenda whilst also placing emphasis on the longevity and sustainability aspect of materials sourced. Blackbutt hardwood floors feature through most of the open living spaces, with Italian limestone tiles in the kitchen honed to a smooth (semi-gloss) finish. They salvaged hardwood cabinets from a Brisbane school, painted them white and added a built- in desk, making the kitchen a multifunctional space and a special hub for family to connect during busy meal times. A tight-knit family, more time with Brisbane based grandchildren is beckoning and for them, it is time to close the chapter living in their beloved Guanaba home and start a new story.
the daily walks down through the bush to the river where all of life’s important decisions are made, enjoying their state-of-the-art theatre room with a glass of wine, sitting together in the living room in front of their granite fireplace on a cold Winter's day, and appreciating the mysterious quiet that settles across the property when rain falls. Whilst it will be a bittersweet move for Simon and Glenda, they are excited for another couple or family to make this home their own and create new memories in this piece of paradise. CANUNGRA Post Office For sale
As a child toys were often cast aside for pretty notepads and stamps and from six years of age, she longed to own her own Post Office. To Cheryl, there was a sense of whimsy and romance to such an endeavour. She envisioned pigeon holes filled with mail waiting to get delivered, drawers and shelves filled with stamps, rubber bands and paperclips and in 1995, Cheryl was close to achieving her dream, however life had other plans and the dream was temporarily put on hold. It wasn’t until moving to Canungra five years ago that her lifelong dream was realised. Relocating to the township of Canungra was an easy decision and a place they found immediately appealing with its ‘country feel', friendly locals and tight knit community. It was then that she and husband, Greg purchased the Post Office and home in King Street and lovingly renovated it, before purchasing their current home in Tamborine Street that again they have renovated to reflect their personal style. No matter the season, commuting to work is no more than a 3 minute walk, the LPO (Licenced Post Office) conveniently nestled amongst the ‘hustle and bustle' of Christie Street.
Client profile Scenic Road Properties
As Cheryl proudly opens all of the drawers in her office, it’s clear that since owning the business she has been in her element and effortlessly adheres to the saying, "A place for everything and everything in its place." Importantly, the LPO is the towns own stockist of back to school book packs, a saving grace for local parents. Having spent a number of years as a Queensland State Manager for a school supply company, this has been a pillar of the business whilst also allowing her to continue her passion for both education and stationary. TAMBORINE 32 Tuggerah Grove Sold
Driving out to Tuggerah Grove in Tamborine, we met and spoke with avid Bee-Keeper, Colleen, to chat about the evolution of her skincare range, Jordella, a range of products enriched with bush honey from her very own farm, a property recently sold by Scenic Road. 14 years ago, in the search of a skincare range suitable for sensitive skin for her Mother, sister and grandaughters, Jordan and Ella, Colleen was dismayed with the lack of chemical-free beauty products in the market. With a background in bee-keeping, cosmetic chemistry, formulation, and aromatherapy, Colleen created Jordella, a skincare range for sensitive skin. As we sat next to the bee hives, and we learnt that bees have a flight path of their own, and the importance of staying out of that path, the deep respect and passion Colleen has for both bee's and her skin care range is obvious. Like her business, our chat evolved and we moved onto life and the challenges we all face at one time or another. Colleen walked us through what the last couple of years were like and how Scenic Road Properties helped herself and husband Gerard through one of life's more challenging times...
"When COVID initially hit, life threw us more than one curve ball and for various reasons we sadly had to sell our newly built dream home. Being experienced entrepreneurs, we thought we should try and sell our own home. We set about doing our own marketing, but despite the interest, the house didn’t sell. Life felt like it had completely stalled until we picked up Scenic Road Magazine and flicked through to Scenic Road Properties. Immediately we were drawn to Drew and his ethos. Upon meeting him, after all our struggles, he was like a breath of fresh air. Scenic Road Properties enlisted new photographers and videographers, doing it their way, and within 24 hours we had four buyers interested and later that night, three offers on the table. We accepted an offer, Drew making what had been a very challenging time, easy. The transaction was very well executed, and we would thoroughly recommend Drew and the team at Scenic Road Properties." TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN DISTILLERY After 28 years, the iconic Tamborine Mountain Distillery still remains a 'must-do' on the list of many. During this time, they really have established somewhat of a cult following!
IMAGES BY CARIN GARLAND
Once you have tried their liqueurs, it is easy to see why. Since 1993, they have won over 300 National and International awards for their Liqueurs and Spirits, making them the most awarded Australian distillery in the new Millennium. Over this time, they have maintained a true artisanal approach to their processes, honouring traditional methods of production that have been passed down through generations from the founder’s Russian and Ukrainian family heritage, methods that still remain key to the production processes of the distillery as we know it today. Utilising a range of specialised copper pots and state of the art reflux stills, their production team create a superb range of spirits and tinctures that provide the essence and foundation of their products. Visitors can now go behind the scenes of this working craft distillery and learn first-hand about the various production processes. Distillery tours last approximately one hour and include a welcome Gin and Tonic on arrival (or any spirit and mixer of your choice), a guided tour of the museum, an exclusive walk through the working distillery before finishing with a tasting flight. All distillery tours have a maximum of 10 guests per tour, a truly boutique experince for all. tamborinemountaindistillery.com/product/distillery-tours/ 10 Macdonnell Rd, Tamborine Mountain, Queensland (07) 5545 3452 tamborinemountaindistillery 32

RubyBOUTIQUE Lou E-Commerce in the Hinterland Operating from the hinterland, Ruby Lou Boutique is a local online fashion store, servicing the needs of women looking for that personalised online shopping experience. Owner Amber Walker, an experienced retail business woman explains how it was never her intention to own an e-commerce store, “life just progressed that way”, we uncovered what a wonderful opportunity that turned out to be. “After 11 great years of owning a shop front in Tamborine Mountain, I was ready for a change. I had loved seeing my customers on a daily basis, however manning a shop and juggling two young daughters, I was ready for that change. My girls absolutely love watching me work from home and will often help process orders and post packages, it’s been such a great move in terms of our work life balance.” With statistics reporting an explosion of growth for e-commerce, it looks like it was also the right commercial move to make for this young Mum and entrepreneur. “However you want to look at it, a lot of hard work goes into running any business, especially an on-line business, but for me it’s about being consistent in the type of product you provide while also providing a high level of interactive service. Ruby Lou Boutique consistently offers fun easy to wear Bohemian fashion... from timeless classic staples to pastel floral prints to bold statement pieces, from the petite to the plus sizes, we have something for all women. On the topic of customer service, I think it’s important to give online customers the same retail experience but from the convenience of their own homes. I have built up wonderful relationships, while shopping on our website my customers know they can contact me via the live chat box or send a message on social media. Quality garments, good prices and 5-star service, it’s not really rocket science.” To view Amber's online store head to rubylouboutique.com.au or visit her social media pages… rubylouboutique.com.au 0421 862 361 rubylouboutique

CANUNGRA BOOKS & ART There’s something nostalgic, familiar and grounding about a book shop. Perhaps it is because we live in a world that is largely digital, we crave the calm and tactile touch of paper now more than ever. Jan McGregor, owner of Canungra Books and Art, fondly remembers her Great Aunt reading to her a childhood favourite, The Owl and the Pussy Cat, a book she still loves to this day. When travelling abroad Jan tells us, she always sought comfort in the warmth and smell of a book store, whether she was in London, Paris, Edinburgh or Berlin, walking into a bookshop always felt like home. At every corner, Canungra Books and Art is a place to experience Jan’s love of literature and art, vintage clothing and clever finds that are reminiscent of a world gone by. Jan shares with us what she loves most about owning a book store. “I think for me it’s peoples' reaction when they step inside my book store. I just love that we can bring new life to precious old books, that we can support local artisans and authors and that we can help find that special book that someone might have been searching for, for years. With the store set for expansion, the future is bright for books at Canungra Books and Art. Whilst retaining the current 'old' Queenslander atmosphere, the bookshop will soon be expanding with additional rooms for customers to meander through with inviting spaces for people to pause and absorb the powerful presence of books.

WHAT OUR WONDERFUL CLIENTS SAY “I love it! Thank you so much for putting this together! We’ve got a little newborn so things move quite slowly here at home, but at least now I have a plan to slowly work towards. It’s so easy to buy one item here and there when it appeals, only to find you’re left with a heap of mismatched interior items. At least now I can avoid that. I didn’t know what to expect when you first contacted me, but I’m very pleasantly surprised at how helpful having someone else’s eyes reinterpret my ideal room. So huge thanks again. I really appreciate the work you’ve put in and know I’ll be coming back to your plans and lists for future reference as we make our house a home” Charissa, Bellbird Park QLD

Juggling family life and work, as many of us are, why not spend less time in the kitchen and more time with the family and source food en-route as we did, supporting and stopping in at local bakeries. Arthur Clive’s Family Bakehouse have been making home baked goodies for the Scenic Rim Region since 1936, their tried and true recipes standing the test of time. Specialising in pies, baked goods and melt-in-your-mouth pastries, we grabbed some of their pecan and macadamia tartlets and recommend a good dollop of whipped cream. Because. Well, cream. And it goes with everything on a picnic! Speaking of cream, we love supporting local brands like Norco, and their cream certainly did not go astray. We recommend a good wodge of cream on a scone and we picked some up at the local IGA in Boonah, making preparing for an afternoon picnic as easy as pie! The amazing Kate Raymont and Scenic Rim Farm Shop jumped onboard the picnic train, whipping up some delicious freshly baked baguettes and superb frittatas, perfect for a hungry tribe. Planning a special luncheon? Just add pretty linen like we did, with statement crockery (check out My Country Escape for more divine pieces) and add some pretty florals to add that wow factor. Janie Coutts
Freedom Health & Fitness In 2017 Janie Coutts took a chance. She had only been working for Freedom Health & Fitness a short while, and with some encouragement from supportive family and friends, she came to the decision she wanted to make this her new life. The effervescent Janie Coutts, now the owner of Freedom Health & Fitness Beaudesert, sits down with SR Magazine to tell us more about that leap of faith. "I’d been a member of the gym since the day it first opened in 2005. I ended up working on reception for two years during which time I decided to complete my certification to become a personal trainer and class instructor. I then decided to bite the bullet and I approached the owners about selling. I could see the huge potential for the gym and how this career would give me great joy in my life. It can be very different journey for people, some want to simply move their bodies, or do something for themselves, it isn’t all about weight loss and appearance." What’s your daily inspiration? "I’ve seen people gain wonderful self confidence, it really is absolutely amazing. Sure they’ve changed their appearance, but seeing how proud they are of themselves is heart warming! It makes me feel so proud! That is my daily inspiration for doing what I do." What advice do you like to give to your clients when they first start this journey? “Be kind to yourself, it's hard to be happy when someone is mean to you all the time!” We are so hard on ourselves! What can people expect when they visit Freedom Health & Fitness Beaudesert? "Well firstly they can expect to be greeted by our amazing staff, our team are a huge focus for me, the staff and instructors make this facility was it is. They’re invaluable because they understand the journey our members might be on, be it fitness, weight loss, health or mental health. They’re wonderful motivators and supporters! In terms of the equipment and layout, we offer a range of training options and aim to appeal to everyone. We have
various separate training areas; functional training, boxing, cardio equipment and weights. Our timetable is extremely comprehensive. With the help of some fantastic instructors we are able to offer a variety of yoga classes, Les Mills RPM and Body Pump provide awesome upbeat workouts, Boot Camp and functional training sessions in the Sin Bin. We also have lovely Sauna facilities and Kids Club for those Mum’s and Dad’s who just need some time to themselves." What does Freedom Health & Fitness Beaudesert look like in the future? "I’ve made plans to upgrade the flooring in our upstairs Studio and am always looking at new equipment options and training ideas. Watch this space. But the future is all about growing our membership and community…we have different age groups at all different stages, so we just want to continue being the friendly fitness centre that caters for everyone." freedomhealthandfitness.com.au (07) 5541 0999 | Open 24 hours 13 Duckett Street, Beaudesert QLD freedomhealthandfitnessbeaudesert

WINES This Mediterranean-like terroir is perfect for the Italian and Spanish varieties planted by the family. The whites are led by the Sardinian Vermentino and the Fiano from Campania. Both are blended to make an extraordinary Storm Cru Sparkling White.
CHEF OLIVIER BOUDON
The reds are Montepulciano from Abruzzo on the east coast of Italy and Tempranillo from the Toro region in Northern Spain. Together they also create the brilliant Storm Cru Sparkling Red. The Vermentino combines with the bleedings from the skins of the Montepulciano to make the highly sophisticated Rose'. Expect to be both genuinely surprised and pleasantly rewarded by these Queensland-grown offerings.

Folk and Co. Feather Road Studios Grounded Village
&
Starting three small businesses in four years... If that sounds crazy, it probably was and still is. However, Ami and Nadine who started out as coffee play date friends, are truly an inspiring pair. Upon meeting these two chalk and cheese gals, it becomes clear – they both enjoy a good laugh, are up for a challenge and are all about setting the bar high. NADINE “We used to have coffee here at Cusack Lane, our favourite spot and had mentioned a couple of times how amazing it would be to actually create a few little shops and businesses around this beautiful café atmosphere. Then Ami rang me one afternoon after picking the kids up and said “that space on the corner near the café is suddenly empty." We literally in the space of two minutes went that’s it, it’s happening let’s do it and she rang the owner, (we are both big universe people and believe in signs). We then gave ourselves six weeks to pull everything off and here we are. In that short amount of time, their beautiful homewares store Feather Road Studios was born. Fast forward two years on and another shop space became available on the other side of the café – the ladies once again found themselves going with fate, and in 2019 their boutique Folk and Co. swung open its doors. Now it can be said, that both stores offer customers a shopping experience rarely seen in this neck of the woods. For those who are yet to visit their boutiques on Cusack Lane, we can confirm the girls' style rivals that of a trendy Byron Bay or James Street Burleigh boutique. But don’t worry, their business savvy instincts see items well priced and products you won’t find anywhere else in the local vicinity, (or Queensland for that matter). Nadine, who always wanted to own her business after forging a career in corporate retail, remembers playing shops with her Grandma’s tins out of her cupboards when she was just a little girl. And Ami says she grew up helping her mother in the kitchen of their café. Her whole life she watched her mother run her own business, ranging from cafes to gourmet delis and clothing brands. It’s no surprise to see these ladies thriving in their boutique shop environments and building quite literally a village community atmosphere. When asked about why they started a third business NADINE tells us…“A large part of our initial vision for 56
“Don’t second guess yourself, just have a go.” Feather Road Studios was to have retail and offer creative workshops for kids and adults, as we both have children that learn differently and believe that creativity of any sort is really important for children’s development and growth as a person. The workshops were always popular and then Covid hit and workshops stopped and the retail side expanded. We had always ear marked this basement area under the building for something one day and here was that one day. Grounded Village was born, the new hub of creativity, events and whatever else our customers want to use the space for.” So how do this energetic pair, both with their own families and homes to run, unwind and check out of work life… NADINE “I’m laughing because I actually don’t know how to check out. I’m shocking. My brain often wanders and thinks about work even when I am not here. I think it’s mainly because I find myself constantly inspired no matter what I am doing. I do like to chill at home, but I also love adventuring outdoors in this amazing region. Doing things with family and friends is most important – along with a good cocktail." AMI “I try to ride my horse a few days a week, even if it’s only brief. My partner and I are very lucky to have the same day off through the week so we make sure we use this time to do something together. We head down the beach, go for hikes in the mountains around here or long lunches and picnics are always good. I make time to be out in Nature and explore the hidden gems of our region (that’s why we love your mag ha ha). And I love to cook, especially for those I love, our children and my family."

Getting back to nature offers undeniable health benefits, both physical and mental. Enjoy a better work life balance, a local community where everyone say’s hi, more property for your hard earned dollars, great services, schools, produce, no

Our commitment to producing high quality marketing campaigns encompassing not just the real estate but the stories of the region and communities, has engaged buyers from across Australia ensuring our beautiful area remains in their focus when considering the right destination for the family or the smart investment choice. This year, in South East Queensland, it has been a little like the gift that keeps on giving despite the worries in the world. Booming hinterland tourism, expansion and investment in residential development, agribusiness and commercial / industrial projects have been supported by announcements like Brisbane to host the 2032 Olympic Games and the Lonely Planet Guide listing the Scenic Rim as one of the world’s top 10 places to visit. There’s no doubt, The Great South East isn’t just the place to ride out the pandemic. Set for a massive decade of growth and expansion our stunning Queensland region is the place to be.
