EDITOR'S LETTER

So here we are again, another edition of Scenic Road Magazine, and another baby added to the clan. I honestly think the credentials for being a working parent should include; the innate ability to compartmentalise family life and work life, even when they unavoidably meld into one. Or perhaps it’s the simple ability to laugh at oneself when you’ve completely forgotten what it was you were doing only seconds earlier.

There is no greater marvel than a ridiculously busy mother and I admire anyone that gives life a red-hot go, especially our team members here at Scenic Road Magazine. I have seen greatness from this crew of ladies, a deep desire to produce well-polished work; from Carin’s stunning imagery and clever use of words to Brooke’s organisational skills and admirable task orientated mindset, to Eden’s calm approach in bringing a spreadsheet full of chaos to life – this is our team of mothers who show up and give it their all. Now, I’m not saying every day is perfect, but the beauty of a sisterhood is that we have a mutual respect, an understanding of what it takes to be a working mum. From the dreaded phone call from the school, to the annoying headlice emergency that requires immediate treatment, and yes sometimes that includes treating our own hair (insert current situation while editing this magazine). There is no glossy Instagram life at home or at work, there’s just life! Which brings me to the importance of sharing one’s problems or should I say ‘challenges’ for a better word. There is a helpful story in this current edition introducing ‘Our Space Psychology’ a new business providing just that. Tamborine Mountain couple, Fergus and Louisa, saw a gap in their community, prompting them to offer a family-based psychology clinic complete with therapy dogs and an ‘at home’ feel. There is nothing more important than feeling connected or heard, so I prompt anyone in need of that extra support to contact ‘Our Space Psychology’ for their exclusive offer to our readers – a complimentary 20 min phone consultation.

There are also some wonderful community centred articles, like the page on ‘Forest School’, a program within the Canungra C & K, giving children the opportunity to connect with the outdoors and nature. There’s also the story about Outland Denim, James and Erica Bartle, changing the way we think about fashion and the unethical origins of our clothing. Their extraordinary brand making a positive impact on people’s lives around the world. The inspiring story on Russell Smith, an indigenous musician and Scenic Rim resident, reminding us about our instinctual desire to survive and thrive. And our front cover story, Eat Local Month, the festival that brings the entire Scenic Rim community

together. The funny and vibrant Kath Rose, giving us her tips on how to navigate and eat our way around this awardwinning tourism event. There is also the beautiful story of Hampson Honey, a family run business who are now on the shelves of Woolworths.

We also made a magnificent discovery, artist Nina Hanley, a Canungra mother who takes real life situations and deconstructs them into a thing of beauty, the lens of surrealism my new favourite genre of visual art. We are so excited to see what crosses this incredible woman’s path next – commissions welcome!

There are several interiors inspired articles, with a peek inside the newest luxury accommodation venue on Tamborine Mountain, Verandah House Country Estate. A great interview with owner Judi Pereira, one that will have you booking yourself in for a ‘decompressed’ weekend away. The Long Farm, a story about preserving the old and historic; and The Dairy at Long Farm, a new destination now open to creative businesses wanting a rustic backdrop - our team jumping at the chance to create a Long Lunch collaboration. There are so many gorgeous stories in this edition, the Rainforest Restaurant a must visit and Lydia’s Garden, an interview with Samantha Dusting who we affectionately call the ‘the flower lady’. Pilates and Yoga with Janie from Freedom Fitness and Woodland Coffee, the newest artisan coffee to hit the Scenic Rim. A lifesaver when it comes to providing the best daily pick me up, there’s also a special offer to our readers on pg. 57

I hope you enjoy working your way through the pages, with special thanks to all the amazing people who support us behind the scenes, husbands, parents, friends and our loyal advertisers. I am immensely proud of the community we have built at Scenic Road – and the all-important sisterhood. Even our awesome kids deserve a special mention, Leonardo, Rosalina, Giorgiana and Lucia –I love you my darlings.

CONTRIBUTORS

Until its final stages, it is mostly Luisa and I working on this publication, not to mention our respective children that we either drag around with us on photo shoots, or, like other working parents, dot them around with family and friends. Some days it has felt like a constant juggle with this little team, though certainly a rewarding one. We have learnt the importance of being honest when we feel as though we are unravelling as women, as mothers, and as creatives. Those honest conversations are important ones for ALL of us to share. To all those that have advertised with us, and ridden the wave with us as we balance motherhood, work, and running a small business, we are deeply grateful. We see it as an honour, being entrusted to tell the stories, be it visually or with words, that represent people's businesses and livelihoods. My darling Oliver, there are many days I feel like I don't get the work-life balance right, I hope you understand all of my career decisions, aspirations and dedication to work are for the benefit of you. I love you my little bestie.

Producing this beautiful magazine is a massive undertaking; there's months of planning, writing, and photography that happens long before the copy and images hit my desk. Then it's all systems go as we feverishly work towards the print deadline, our kids by our side as we consider every detail on every page. As a mum and business owner it can be a challenge, balancing our love for our work with the demands of family life. Accepting – or even asking for – help can be tough, but learning to lean on others can be truly liberating. Earlier this year I was lucky enough to have talented local designer Rachel Young join my design studio. Her skilled eye laid out much of this edition, a project I would have struggled to take on without her help. I am so grateful for her support in lightening the load and to Luisa for inviting us to work on this amazing magazine; together we have produced something truly special that we (and our kids) can be proud of.

Being a part of this team of strong, amazing women and mothers is honestly a privilege. Through them, I have found more strength, resilience, and inspiration but most importantly life-long friendships. I am so blessed to be able to call what I do a job and to be able to work with these creative women. This magazine is a true testament to not only the hard work they all put in but the vision and passion that pours into it. Whether it be photoshoots, meetings, or quick updates over the phone, more often than not with the sound of a baby’s cry or kids running around, and one of us trying to wrangle them in. The number of apologies we give each other for our noisy backgrounds and interruptions is somewhat comical. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. Well, maybe a little less noise when the phone rings and less of those sibling fights, thanks kids! Ah the joys of work life and motherhood, it’s such a beautiful, beautiful juggle.

AT HOME WITH CHERYL CARR

IMAGES AND WORDS BY CARIN GARLAND

FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS BY
@DEARAGNESTHEFLOWERMERCHANT
Somewhere tucked away in a drawer amongst all her mother’s documents and keepsakes, is a photo of a little shack that Cheryl Carr took as an eighteen-year-old on a road-trip in the Roadvale region. Inscribed on the back of the photo, “I found a fixer upper”.
10 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

Twenty years later, it was the views of the undulating green hills that roll out to meet the mountains of the Main Range that drew Cheryl back to the region, purchasing a converted Lutheran Church she now calls home with her son, Oliver, and their Orpington hens.

The little fixer upper had all but been forgotten until she realised it used to sit on the property adjacent to where she now resides.

“It’s funny how we feel connected to certain places and how they draw us back. Looking through the church windows that frame the landscape beyond, I feel such calmness here,” she says.

Cheryl, an interior stylist and all-round creative, is a collector. A curator of spaces and antique treasures - beautiful weathered pieces with history and stories to tell all of their own.

If you are a lover of publications featuring country houses, chances are you have seen her trademark styling work and the magic she creates woven into the pages before you. This woman truly is a magician and knows how to make editorial imagery standout.

Within her own home, changes have been well-considered. “I was very conscious of retaining the character of what the church once was. In the kitchen I added vintage shelves, old hooks, and an old railway cupboard for the pantry. I repainted both the exterior and interior of the church and would like to add some darker colours to the smaller rooms. Colour is so moodenhancing. I love the idea of cocoon-like spaces, and I feel that selecting darker colours in the smaller, more private rooms will do that, offering a nice contrast to the more spacious, light-filled areas like the kitchen and living room,” she says, revealing the depth of her expertise.

It is in her living room, the heart of this five-bedroom, light-filled abode, where her online store Albert & Grace began, a stunning collection of pre-loved and worn wares she sells to complement one’s space. So busy has she been with styling jobs however, she’d pressed pause on this hugely successful side-business.

“It’s something I would like to start doing again, as I really have missed it,” she says enthusiastically, though it will be a busy year, as work projects will take her across the Tasman Sea for a time, then over to France, as well as establishing her own onsite studio and much-desired veggie patch.

When asked what tips she has for others designing a home or restyling a space she says, “It is the natural world and connection to it that inspires me most of all. I feel as though it is how you want to feel in a space, and how you are inspired by nature – be it light, texture, colours, scents and sounds – that serves as a good starting point for many. Like life, inspiration comes in so many forms. I feel that everything really is one big woven tapestry!”

FROM HIVE TO HOME

14 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

Hampson Honey is a wonderful story, one I first came across at my local butcher shop in Canungra. It wasn’t just the story behind the brand, but the incredible taste of this raw and unblended honey that caught my attention. What once started as a hobby hive (circa 2009), born from curiosity and a little fate, is now a flourishing honey business found on the shelves of Woolworths and local fruit and veg shops in the Scenic Rim. The brand is named after the Hampson family, Carl and Karin Hampson, along with their three boys; Tyler and twins Jordan and Jesse.

Karin (pronounced Car-in, the same as our Scenic Road photographer Carin) is passionate about honey, however she states this wasn’t always the case. “I was always fearful of being stung, and wasn’t overly enthusiastic about having hives in our garden, but eventually Carl got his way and so Hampson Honey was born.” Carl adds with a smirk, “She really wasn’t keen on the idea, but after tasting our first lot of honey, I had her sold.”

As with most family-owned businesses, the duties are shared. Karin looks after the marketing and distribution of the business; a successful career in marketing made this a good fit for the super mum, while Carl, an ex-professional squash player, is focused on the health and wellbeing of the bees, having first fallen in love with the art of beekeeping well before the idea of making this a commercial scale business. Along with their boys and extended family and friends who help within the business, this is an Australian brand grown from the first hive … up!

With over a 1000 active hives and a small team of beekeepers and packers, their sweet story is one of fortuitous learnings. Karin reflecting on the decision to take their business from production to retail. “Our dream was to move into retail, but we found it difficult to source an affordable honey packer that could pack our retail range. When the drought and the bushfires hit in 2019, we made the bold decision to diversify into packing honey. This meant we were not so reliant on the beekeeping side to provide for our family. As a farmer, your income is very dependent on the weather and can fluctuate greatly from year to year. We’ve always mitigated the risk to a degree by packing bulk honey. Our goal has always been to give everyday customers the opportunity to taste real honey the way nature intended. Last year, we finally got a seat at the table with Woolworths. They decided to launch our product range in their Queensland and northern NSW stores. We are so grateful to our customers who make this all possible, without the demand for good quality raw Australian honey; our brand would not be on the shelves.”

15 EDITION 8
16 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

We are quick to discover this family brand is more than just honey…. our keen interest and endless questions prompt Karin to organise a field trip for us, to experience firsthand the art of Apiculture.

On a beautiful Autumn day, we pack the car and hit the road to shoot Carl and his team in action. Our drive takes us up the range and out to Warwick, just one of the temporary locations that Hampson hives frequent. Carl spends many weeks of the year on the road, driving around the countryside inspecting locations, in search of flowering plants to keep his bees happy and thriving. Tom – one of the Hampson Honey beekeepers and young Tyler Hampson along with Carl, are there to greet us on the arrival. And oh my, the views, the wide-open farmlands, with a mix of woodland and native forests, are nothing short of spectacular. Carin and I both sit in awe and draw a breath as we get our first glimpse of beekeepers at work. It’s stunning to watch, father and son working hand in hand, tending to their bees.

“This is why we do it,” says Carl. “It’s a nomadic life, not without its challenges. We spend many nights away from our families, sleeping rough and rolling out a swag under the stars, but it provides so much more than just an income; there is a sense we are working on something bigger than just producing honey. By taking care of our bees, we are taking care of our planet. We have a saying at Hampson Honey, if we look after the bees, they will look after us. This motto flows through every aspect of our business. Every decision made is shaped by the question, what is best for the

bees? This sometimes means leaving the honey for the bees. It sometimes means moving them from one forest to another and then another, chasing a specific floral source depending on their needs. We do whatever it takes to keep them happy and they in return produce incredible tasting honey.”

Our day sadly comes to an end, and as we climb back in our car and head home, we can’t help but smile, knowing we are about to share a great story, one about family and of good will and how a small idea, a dream to produce great tasting honey, gives back so much to so many.

You can purchase Hampson Honey at the following stockists around the Scenic Rim; The Butchery Canungra, Scenic Rim Farmers Market Beaudesert and all Woolworths stores in Queensland and Northern New South Wales.

Hampson Honey is 100% Australian. Everything from the delicious honey, to the jars, cartons, and labels are made in Australia. It’s all farmed, packed and distributed right here in sunny Queensland. By supporting Hampson Honey, you are also supporting many other Australian families and businesses. Follow their journey on socials and support this local familyowned business, quietly working away, doing good for you and our world. Just like the bees!

RUSSELL SMITH

SCENIC RIM MUSICIAN

IMAGES AND WORDS BY CARIN GARLAND

“Be true to yourself,” are words that Pitjantjatjara man, Russell Smith has lived by for as long as he can remember. These words have seen him through the hard times, they have buoyed him and pushed him to want more, seek more, and to never settle for a life of mediocrity.

18 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

Born in 1964 in South Australia’s Port Augusta, Russell was born into a life of poverty that most do not escape from. From the age of seven, along with his four siblings and mother, he lived on the Umeewarra Mission Children’s Home, a Christian Brethren home and school for Aboriginal children. It was mission life that taught Russell how to be tough. Every scrap of food on the table had to be fought for and life was merely about surviving.

At 14 he was forced to leave the Umeewarra Reserve; it was 1978 and very little value was placed on educating Aboriginal children. He was on his own.

He bussed and trained, making his way across to Esperance in Western Australia to start a panel beating apprenticeship. This life as a young “vagabond” is something that still shocks Russell. “Anything could have happened to me. I could have been kidnapped or lost,” he says softly, his voice trailing off, temporarily in another place and time.

He hated panel beating however.

“It got my hands dirty,” he says, laughing and switching tempo. Somehow even at that age something in him sensed that his hands were made for a life of creativity. He travelled home to Port Augusta for a time before departing once more, this time bound for Sydney in the search of the better life he wished for, leaving his troubled adolescence behind him.

He trained as a wood machinist and immersed himself in the Sydney music scene, starting his own Christian band at the age of 15.

Spy v. Spy, Jenny Morris, Hunters and Collectors and an emerging band at the time, INXS were all hugely influential to his music, and imbued him with inspiration.

Russell cites David Gulpilil as another influential figure. Watching him dance and perform in 1987’s Storm Boy was of great importance to him. This strong Aboriginal man helped validate Russell’s own sense of self, music, and connection to Aboriginal culture.

In 1996, along with Melbourne’s who’s who of music; Dave Mudie, Lee Morgan, Ben James, Matty Vehl and Phil Ceberano. He formed the band Brolga; their combined efforts creating a unique blend of rock, blues, funk and indigenous sounds.

The music of renowned Australian Icon, Archie Roach has been the soundtrack to Russell’s life and together they toured through Asia, Europe and America, Archie offering Russell guidance, friendship and mentorship.

“This wooden stick has taken me around the world,” Russell says proudly, referring to his didgeridoo. As well as performing all over the globe with his dear friend Archie, he has performed with Tommy Emmanuel in Lorient, France, another defining and career solidifying moment. He has performed for Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, regularly shares the stage with Paul Kelly, and was paramount in putting together last year’s Rocking the Rainforest concert held on Tamborine Mountain.

Equally important to this celebrated musician is philanthropy. He has always felt a deep need to help others and giving back and contributing has always been a personal priority. He has travelled to many Aboriginal communities, teaching other young aspiring artists how to write grants, offering inspiration and guidance whilst helping them to forge their own journey of selfimprovement and creativity.

Under mentor Helen Morris he completed a philanthropy internship with the Myer Foundation and establishing his own foundation is something that he is working towards. In between touring and being a husband and father to two children of course.

What does the future hold for Russell?

“I really need to get back home and sit in the red dirt for a bit and eventually I’d love to perform the didgeridoo in Antarctica. But right now I am content. I feel like musically I have made it. I am living the dream and life is no longer about surviving. I'm thriving.”

RAINFOREST RESTAURANT

AND LOUNGE BAR AT CEDAR CREEK LODGES

What makes a good restaurant? Is it singularly the food, or the whole experience that makes us remember and want to re-visit again, and again?

20 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

The Rainforest Restaurant and Lounge Bar ticks many of those memorable boxes, providing a cosy culinary experience set amongst the canopy of the rainforest, with the sound of Cedar Creek flowing, and the gentle calls of birdlife in song. Oh, and did we mention the food…

Whether you are looking for an intimate dining experience for a party of two, or a cheerful gathering of friends and family, the new Autumn/Winter menu is sure to bring your tastebuds delight and a fully contented belly. Hearty and fresh produce feature heavily, with local suppliers and producers showcased in exciting flavour combinations, and it's all thanks to the incredible team in the kitchen.

Executive Chef Brent Giddins, Head Chef Rob Taplin, and Sous Chef Nichola Stephens-Barnett have devised a new menu that is on par with the exquisite natural surrounds.

“The new Autumn Winter menu has been a collaborative approach. Our kitchen is all about teamwork with each of us playing a vital role in producing an unforgettable dining experience,” says Brent.

“The inspiration for this new menu is seasonal ingredients, local produce, and global influences to create dishes that are delicious and familiar, and also innovative. Our ultimate goal is to create a menu that showcases the diverse and exciting flavours that are available to us as chefs, particularly from Tamborine Mountain and the wider Scenic Rim”.

Equally as passionate is Head Chef Rob Taplin, who goes on to add, “we each bring something different to the table, both creatively and with our skill set. Together, our team creates a dynamic and collaborative environment where we are constantly pushing ourselves to innovate and create new and exciting dishes. All of us love the creativity and artistry that goes into creating a dish. Experimenting with different flavours, textures, and ingredients to create something truly unique and delicious.”

The youngest to join the team is Sous Chef Nichola StephensBarnett, sharing with us what she loves about the industry. “I think the artistry of cheffing gives a sense of satisfaction and joy that only comes from sharing your creations with others. There is nothing quite like seeing the pleasure on a customer's face when they taste something that we have cooked. It's this sense of connection and community that makes cooking such a rewarding and fulfilling profession.”

The passion of this dynamic team coupled with the natural setting and fresh new refurbishment, makes The Rainforest Restaurant along with their Lounge Bar (complete with a pool table!), top spot on our must dine list.

Artist

NINA HANLEY

There is a lot to like and admire about self-taught artist Nina Hanley. In a world where inauthenticity, narcissism and selfadulation are perpetuated, this woman, the anthesis of all of these attributes, is real. A 'say it how it is', no-holds-barred, kind of real. Her raw and honest personality is an interesting contrast to the surrealist, 'lowbrow' images she paints.

Walking into the home that Nina shares with husband Bertie and son Max, is both exciting and intriguing. A tasteful, well-appointed, kaleidoscopic use of colour is indicative of just how talented she is. With one pink door, leading onto a blue, contrasted against dark, inky painted walls that showcase her paintings and photographs, she refuses to give in to 'what’s on trend'.

“How boring” Nina comments with a subtle roll of the eyes and a cheeky grin.

The artistic journey hasn’t been an easy one for Nina, though creativity has always coursed through her veins. Her creative journey began in her early 20s as a photographic cadet, spending hours in the darkroom developing images, trying to shrug off being in a 'man’s world' whilst pursuing and honing her creative craft before falling pregnant with her son, Max.

Motherhood has been more challenging for Nina than most, when Max – now 17 – was born with Cerebral Palsy, requiring Nina’s full-time care.

22 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE
IMAGES AND WORDS BY CARIN GARLAND

Her first exhibition in 2017, “Thank F*@$ for Max”, acknowledged as much. Because despite the many challenges faced with being a fulltime carer to Max, it did however allow Nina to funnel a lot of her energy into painting. Had she not been at home caring for him she says she most likely would have maintained her 9-5 job with no time for art.

When asked what it is about 'lowbrow' art, an art movement that began in California in the 1960s, that resonates with Nina, it is the satirical, sarcastic and humorous elements of the art, seeing the lighter side of life that is most appealing to her.

Her paintings, using classical painterly techniques, challenge social and emotional taboos.

Drawing inspiration from her own unique experiences, as well as sexual imagery, masterly landscapes and surrealism, Nina hopes that whomever owns her artwork appreciates the comical and sarcastic elements her work focusses on, but also that they look for deeper meaning into her work, and what it means to them. That they chuckle rather than take offense. But ultimately, that it is a piece in their home that they adore.

Nina’s talents – though with little ego she would shy away from such comments – are far reaching. When not covered in paint she is also an incredibly talented photographer.

When seeing her photographic works it should be no surprise that she was a finalist in The Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award (2016 & 2017) and The National Photographic Portrait Prize (2022).

With subjects including Neil Finn and Tim Minchin, her photographic compositions are wry, whimsical, edgy, serve as a beautiful insight into the way she sees the world, and like the creator herself, touching. One of her favourite portraits is "The Dogfather". It is a portrait of her Dad, Jack Hanley, who is currently battling prostate cancer and living alone, as his wife of 51 years and Nina’s mother, is now in an aged care home as she descends deeper into her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Pictured with Jack is his beloved dog, Monty, who has managed to make him smile throughout his journey. Outside of the comical, it is these images that Nina excels at. Creating beautiful tributes out of hardship.

For Nina, the dream is that she can create a fulltime career out of her art. After spending even the briefest of time with her, one can’t help but want that for her too. Because she is sassy and down to earth and honest and kind. But also because she is insanely talented and deserves to be a winner in life. Deserves for her work to be applauded and recognised for its unapologetic uniqueness.

LYDIA'S GARDEN

"Lydia's Garden is a tribute to my wonderful Grandma, Lydia Alice, affectionately know to all as Mickee. She had an amazing Victorian cottage garden and shared her love of flowers with my sister Emma and I. When we visited we were given a basket and a pair of snips and allowed to cut as many flowers as we liked."

24 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

At what point did you decide to make floristry your career? And are you self-taught or did you do a course? My friend Adele had a wedding styling/decor business and had booked a wedding at Versace that she needed a florist for. She asked if I thought I’d be able to do it as she knew about my love of flowers – thankfully the wedding wasn’t until the following year and it gave me enough time to complete a floristry course with Gold Coast School of Floristry. Talk about a baptism of fire, it was a huge Sri Lankan wedding with masses of flowers, lots of colour and music and beautiful traditional ceremonies. I specialised in wedding floristry from 2007. When Michelle Roper-Dennis bought My Country Escape eight years ago I offered to help her with the shop flowers and you could say our friendship has blossomed since then (pun intended!).

What is it about the process that you love most? Or perhaps you have a number of things that you love about creating floral art? I love going to the flower markets (despite the really early start!) and seeing what’s fresh, locally grown and choosing my colour palette.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? What’s on trend, seasonal inspo, or any sites or people that you like to follow? Oh gosh, my inspiration comes from so many different places. I love Sarah Rhyanen from Saipua, she’s got a beautiful, loose, airy, thrown together floral style that looks so effortless but is really difficult. Trends come and go and personally I prefer not to follow them, I’d rather just do ‘my style’ and if people like to buy and appreciate my flowers, well that’s enough for me.

Is there a specific personal style that you most enjoy, or do you like to mix it up and produce different styles depending on the brief? I love making bouquets that look like you’ve just swept your arm through the garden and gathered up a bunch, nothing too organised or structured. Almost like floral doodling! Nature is so beautiful the way it is so random and I like to try and recreate that.

What would be your dream project to work on? I would love to do a floral installation for my favourite artist, Jane Guthleben, next exhibition. She paints incredible Dutch Master style paintings featuring Australian native flora. Check her out!

What do you have in mind for the future growth of your business? Would you consider doing workshops for people interested in floral artistry? I’m pretty happy with how Lydia’s Garden is evolving, at the moment I am kept really busy with bouquets and orders for the shop, weddings and have just started offering deliveries within the Scenic Rim area. I’d be really chuffed if my daughters decided they wanted to join me in the future! I’ve held a few wreath workshops, and Christmas table centrepiece workshops in the past and would definitely do them again. I’ve got a few other workshops in the pipeline - watch this space!

EAT LOCAL MONTH

OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO, AND EAT, THIS JUNE WITH KATH ROSE

I was born in the country. So I didn’t need to learn that breathing country air is just somehow easier, that bottlefeeding a calf brings joy that lasts a lifetime and that watching things grow is one of life’s greatest miracles. It just happened. Because I was born in the country.

The Scenic Rim feels like home to me. It’s my new country and one of the most extraordinary and authentic celebrations across this region is Eat Local Month. The wonderful thing is, you don’t need to be born in the country to fall in love with the people, the paddocks, the places and the produce that make Eat Local Month incredible. You just have to show up. They will do the rest.

So without further ado, let’s plan a fantastically fabulous, flavour-filled, food adventure...

Oh, the places we’ll go, and eat, this June (thanks Dr Seuss!)... First up, grab a cuppa, the program and a pen.

Find a spot to sit and plan your adventure. I chose Worendo Cottages looking over The Lost World, because if that’s not inspiration then it just doesn’t exist! My spot came with a very nosy sheep named Bluey, who brought his whole herd over to say hi, and to share my platter! It’s OK, I didn’t let them have wine, I know an underage sheep when I see one!

Now, given the Scenic Rim stretches over 4,200 square kilometres (I know right!!), and there’s 139 Eat Local Month events, you need to plan! Trust me, it tastes better this way!

To make this easier, this year the program focuses on sub-regions across the Scenic Rim, with clustered events on separate weekends (bravo!), meaning you won’t miss a single bite.

There’s the western side with its signature patchwork of paddocks that are home to 600,000 million carrots each year (not kidding, and apologies, I haven’t counted the beans and corn yet!), and the green island in the sky

in Tamborine Mountain, Beechmont and Binna Burra where whipbirds provide your dining soundtrack, and The Lost World and Kerry Valley, where the mist dances so beautifully with sunrise every morning, creating a very special kind of magic.

You can stay a day, a weekend or longer, and choose your events – long lunches and degustations (there’s 37), workshops and classes (there’s 43), family events, tours and experiences (there’s 53), meet the producer adventures and more. Trust me, you definitely need to wear stretchy pants!

What I love most about Eat Local Month is the range of experiences at vineyards and breweries, mountaintops to wood-fired cafes, under 120 year old jacaranda trees, in flower fields, on dairies, in olive groves, carrot paddocks and right across the region’s best restaurants.

27 EDITION 8

A little history - when Eat Local Week began in 2011, as the passion project of a few farmers and locals, 10 events were staged, attended by a few hundred people.

In 2014, the program featured 80 events with 15,000 attendees and last year, in 2022, there were 125 events and almost 40,000 attendees. Now it’s a full month because there was just waaaaay too much flavour to pack into a week, and this year, there’s 139 events. #YouAreWelcome

It is truly the ultimate paddock-to-plate backstage pass, and if I had to pick a *top 5 new events, this would be a starter…

*On June 2, chef Jack Stuart hosts the first ever Blume X Witches Falls Degustation Dinner at Tamborine Mountain. What a way to start! And PS, their 2021 Wild Ferment Chardonnay is amazing (#justsaying)!

*Attention Petal Lovers – on June 9 there’s an event that will break Instagram, Floravesence – An Evening in the Flowers at the Scenic Rim Farm Shop & Café and Elderflower Farm's flower field. Plus, there’s floralinspired cocktails from Cauldron Distillery. Now this is blooming brilliant!

*For something really special, head to the sixth generation Tommerup’s Dairy Farm, recently given the Innovation title at the prestigious Australian Farmer of the Year Awards. On the weekend of 23-25 June, Kay and Dave Tommerup will host two new events in Our Bread and Butter-Simple Farmhouse Pleasures masterclass, and the Tommerup’s Feast on the Farm with guest chef Richard Ousby. This place is the epitome of Heart Farming.

*Can we talk pickles? It’s a major thing - it saves wastage, extends shelf life and is an age-old food craft, which means, it’s cool! The inaugural Fermented Food Festival is on June 10, celebrating this taste-bud blowing world of food fermentation, and hosted by Summer Land Camels and the Pickling Project

*If you have met the internationally famous Hercules the Sheep (think WINX, but shorter, fatter and woollier), then you know that he’s the perfect star for the inaugural Eat Local Month running of the famous Towri Twilight Woolly Cup on Sunday 25 June. Local produce and Towri’s famous Lavender Punch seal the deal for me.

That’s just five events, there’s 134 more to experience!

This is a region of great abundance, of inspiring people, of innovation and ideas, of collaboration, of stories, of steep descents and breathtaking views, of ancient footprints, of herds beyond the fences, of resting places new and old, of rich soil and clear waterholes, of generations of farmers and pathmakers, and of flavours and flavour makers the envy of the world.

This June, come and enjoy. Breathe that country air. You’ll see what I mean.

BON APPETIT and remember to always tread lightly, because tomorrow is just as important as today.

VERANDAH HOUSE COUNTRY ESTATE

Stepping onto the grounds of recently renovated Verandah House Country Estate, owners Laurence and Judy Pereira have completely transformed their newly acquired boutique accommodation. Offering bespoke hospitality, together they have created a luxurious sanctuary for guests to relax and recharge. Set against a dazzling mountainous backdrop with southern views as far as Mt Warning, these eight classically decorated suites are truly stunning and there is something quite Catskills-like about the setting. With layers of Ralph Lauren soft furnishings, stunning artworks and thoughtfully curated pieces throughout, Verandah House is reminiscent of halcyon days and is the perfect place to wind down. No matter if the weather is cold and misty and calls for a crackling fire, or days are sunny and golden, Verandah House will not disappoint. Conveniently located 45 minutes from Gold Coast beaches and airport and an hour from Brisbane, you will be booking your next stay before you have even left.

We sat down with Judy to chat about their new venture. Welcome to the Scenic Rim. We are in love with your aesthetics! What prompted you to purchase and renovate Verandah House Country Estate (VH)? Are you first time hoteliers? It's been a lifelong dream to live in the country but over the years there was always an obstacle that seemed to get in the way. During the pandemic we loved discovering the Scenic Rim and its vast natural beauty. We have both spent years visiting the mountain with family, but until Laurence found a property for sale and coaxed me into an inspection, making the mountain home had never really occurred to either of us. Running a hotel of eight rooms was not at all on my radar. Until we arrived at the property that is! Immediately we could both see the potential in the buildings and grounds. When we walked out to the back of the property we saw possibly the most spectacular vista either of us had ever seen.

32 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

It was pretty much a done deal in that moment! We knew as first-time hoteliers we would have a lot to learn but with my Interior Design skills and Laurence's creative ability to build whatever he puts his mind to, we knew we could turn a run-down hotel into something very special.

How many acres is the property? Five acres. Though in saying that, because our backyard overlooks Beechmont, Lamington National park, Binna Burra and right down towards Mount Warning, I question the size of the land all the time! It really does feel like we are on hundreds of acres. The views transport you far beyond the actual size of the property.

Can you tell us about some key features of the estate that really sets you apart from others? We felt the mountain lacked high quality, luxury accommodation. Because we are privately owned, every detail is so important; from the luxury fit out and products we provide, to the grand plans we have to keep expanding our offerings. We provide good old-fashioned customer service, going above and beyond. We can often be found delivering coffees to our guests at 6am while they are watching the sun rise from the outdoor hot tub.

Our Day Spa, pool and hot tub are definitely key features. This truly is a special place whether you want alone time or to interact with others, we offer it all.

Please tell us more about your Day Spa... We work with the best therapists here on the mountain who, like us, want to provide a Day Spa experience that goes above and beyond the treatment itself. We have created the most beautiful experiences, offer the highest quality of products with a holistic approach. Imagine starting a facial with breath work and a meditation! We also have an infrared sauna. It's perfect in Winter but so beneficial for guests focusing on health any time of the year. I'm so excited about offering wellness retreats...stay tuned for that.

What do you suggest guests bring with them so they most enjoy their stay with you? A snug warm jacket, a beanie and Ugg boots for night times by the fire pit, swimmers for the cold magnesium pool and soaking in the hot tub or detoxing in the infrared sauna. Bring walking shoes for the rainforests and waterfalls, and a good book because we all need some time away from our devices. You won’t need a yoga mat, picnic rugs or baskets as we provide all of those for you.

How do you see VH continuing to evolve? This year we are hard launching our beautiful Day Spa, collaborating with incredible skincare brands to create experiences like no other on the mountain. Day packages, long table events, retreats, and our wine cellar and cheese room are already well on the way to completion. We want to start outdoor movie nights for our guests, and the wheels are in motion to create a mini tennis court and lavender field. We will be hosting high-tea’s and offering lavender scones and ice-cream, of course sourcing the lavender from our very own lavender field. Later in the year we will be launching an onsite homewares store. Our heads are spinning with ideas! We are so excited for the future of Verandah House Country Estate and making every guest’s stay a memorable one.

CALIFORNIA COOL

WITH LINDSAY KALLIS & ROB BURTON

Purchasing their first home in 2019, graphic designer Lindsay and her industrious partner, Rob, have transformed what was once a dilapidated cottage on Tamborine Mountain, into a bright Californian inspired home. A love letter to Lindsay’s birthplace, it is filled with pieces from their time spent in America and their love of mid-century design.

34 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

How would you describe the style of your home?

R: I feel like it's mid-century modern, influenced by both Lindsay's Southern Californian upbringing and my country roots. I call it midwestern modern.

L: I'd agree, and with lots of vibrant pops of colour!

What are your favourite pieces in your home?

R: I’d have to say the early 1920s California Flag we just had framed up. We picked it up a couple years ago at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, California. I also love our 1960s HMV radiogram.

L: Hard to choose! I love our Mark Maggiori print. It's an incredible print and where it's positioned in the house is so lovely because sunrise floods the living room with a pink-orange light. It lights the print up so beautifully. I'm also currently loving the timber sideboard that sits underneath the California flag

Where did you both grow up?

L: We're both west coast kids. I was born in Santa Monica in Los Angeles, California. I moved to Tamborine Mountain when I was 14-years-old.

R: I grew up on the west coast of Australia in Margaret River, a few hours south of Perth.

Did you use any local services to help renovate?

R: Quite a few! Thankfully we have a lot of tradie friends that helped us out, but in addition to friends we used, Coles Earthworks, Five Star Electrical, and Adam at Tamborine Mountain Affordable Tree Services...

What does a day off together look like?

L: Besides a trip to Bunnings or the tip?! We love good coffee so normally visit Picnic or Main Street Provedore with our dogs, Moose and Spud in tow.

R: A day at home landscaping, or building a veggie patch.

LONG FARM

NESTLED AT THE END OF A TREE LINED ROAD IS THE SPRAWLING PROPERTY, LONG FARM

IMAGES AND WORDS BY

36 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

The original homestead, built 150 years ago, sits at the top of a gentle hill, watching life and the seasons change around it, listening to the chatter of its custodians; the effervescent and skilled duo of Kalvin (a shopfitter and cabinet maker) and Samantha (an Interior Designer) along with their son, Jah.

Only the second family outside of the Humphries line to have owned the property since the homestead was built, Samantha and Kalvin have lovingly and expertly renovated and restored the original homestead, ensuring the cottages remained as authentic and as close to the original as possible.

After purchasing the property, Kalvin, Samantha, and Jah spent the first 6 months living around the corner in their other home so they could design and plan whilst waiting for construction to begin on July 1st, 2019. Samantha drafted floor plans for the builder, Ted Kerwin of Kerwin Homes, and other trades. It was at this time she also selected the finishes and new fixtures.

Enamoured with the history of the home, they prioritised re-registering the home as Long Farm, as it was known as in 1908 when Egbert Albert Humphries inherited it from his aunt, Emily Clarkston, and her husband William Clarkston, honouring the history and original owners.

Since 2019, power points have been installed throughout the home as previously there were none. “It was wild,” Sam comments. “There were power points inside the power box, allowing the previous tenant that lived here to use extension leads to have power to the homestead. The water was gravity fed only; it really was like stepping back in time.”

Termites had eaten the structure of the original kitchen and had to be demolished. When designing the new kitchen, timber windows now fill two side walls to take in the beautiful views at the rear of the cottage. This overlooks a 200+ year old Camphor Laurel and the original farm shed.

The beautiful, century old original doors and windows remain hanging and in use. All reusable timber from the restoration was salvaged and is being repurposed around the property; cute fences, a tree fort for Jah, and the kitchen of their separate dwelling on the property, The Dairy

THE DAIRY AT LONG FARM

Looking at The Dairy, you would be forgiven for thinking that you had stepped back in time. There is a raw beauty to the building. In summer, the shaded outdoor sitting area and the breezes offer a reprieve from our sunburnt land; in winter the buildings are shrouded in mist until a soft breeze and the early morning sun pokes through enough to send it on its way. There is a rich sense of heritage and like the homestead, Samantha and Kalvin have kept The Dairy as it was, where they could.

With the buildings restored, the purpose of the space has been given a different future to that of its past. The Dairy with its stunning bush setting as a backdrop is quintessential Australian. We cannot think of too many places that would be better than this bespoke location for photographic and video campaigns, location and product shoots and brand and corporate events. Where once brands needed to travel to the likes of New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania, there are now more options in Queensland, like The Dairy, to create sublime imagery.

Like a page of a well-loved book, they have earmarked The Dairy as a future Airbnb. This short-term accommodation requires approval by Logan City Council, which is a lengthy process, but it will be worth the wait. With alfresco living and spectacular Australian vistas at the heart of the dairy, it was made for reconnecting and enjoying the company of others.

The Dairy consists of a large, elevated bedroom, boasting a queen bed and two single beds. Each bed has its own mosquito net, offering practicality given the open nature of the room, but also a wonderful feeling of romanticism.

The original tin roof has remained, holes born from time and rain have been sealed with silicone, weather proofing the space but allowing spots of light to pass through, creating a beautiful disco ball effect during the day and the sense of being directly under the stars at night, that for the time being a lucky few can experience.

Whilst The Dairy is as off-grid as possible – no tv – there’s a port for charging one’s phone and camera gear, a refrigerator large enough to store food (and wine), cooking can be done on the Family Webber Q and a double gas bench top stove. This space was made for relaxing, for reconnecting. For surrendering to the sounds of nature. Create and capture great content until your heart is beyond full – this is The Dairy at Long Farm.

After shooting the story ‘The Long Farm’ and ‘The Dairy’, we decided this was the perfect setting to create our Long Lunch food feature. Be inspired for your next gathering of family and friends with our natural colour palette, offering up hints of amber and botanicals.

You can shop the table ware provided by the ladies from Feather Road Studios, lamb from The Butchery Canungra and cocktail spirits provided by Tamborine Mountain Distillery, cooking by yours truly and images by Carin – this is our Long Lunch. Lamb

Lamb is an easy choice, for any style of entertaining. It’s especially forgiving due to its high fat content, which means, you can’t really mess it up. An easy method to cook a leg of lamb on the BBQ is to put it in a foil tray, rub with seasoning and a splash of olive oil, pop it in a preheated weber at about 180 – 200 degrees. Cook for the first 20mintues or so at this higher heat, then turn it down and cook slowly while you pour yourself a drink. Check with a knife to see the meat colour juices, remove from the heat, depending on how well cooked you like it.

Salad

Oranges look great on a salad and taste fresh against the rich flavour of lamb. We used crunchy baby cos lettuce, creamy goat’s fetta, toasted pecans, and segments of orange. It’s a salad that can be made all year round, but one this is particularly good in winter, as you can also warm the orange pieces in a pan or BBQ and then drizzle with olive oil, and a touch of honey.

Corn

We kept this spread super simple by adding corn to the BBQ after pulling off the lamb and letting it rest. Wrap in foil with a little butter, and place whole corn on the hot grill, they will only take 10 minutes, then remove the foil and char to your liking. We left the outer corn husks on to create a little drama for our table, be careful not to set them alight as your corn cooks over the hot flames.

SWEETWATER LAMBS

It’s been almost a year since we sat down and spoke with farmer Alex from Australian Sweetwater Crays, and a lot has changed on the farm since then. Multiple income streams are not uncommon on farms these days, with agritourism and farmgate sales at the forefront of this shift. We asked Alex to fill us in on the new additions that have taken up residence in his paddocks.

44 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

Since we last chatted you’ve expanded your business, which you indicated you were going to do in our last edition. Tell about the sheep in your front paddocks and why you have chosen this particular breed.

On top of the redclaw sales and our camping site, we have always had it in our minds to continue to grow and diversify. We chose Aussie White sheep because they are very low maintenance and taste delicious. They shed their own fleece so we don’t need to shear or dock them (their tails are actually very cute) and they breed quite easily.

How many in the flock and what are the stats on the growth and kilos etc…. where do you want the turnover to get to with this arm of your business?

We currently only have 28 ewes and a ram, but they have already had about 10 lambs in their first season and are now onto round two. One of the advantages of the breed is that they can breed multiple times a year and often have twins. We are still learning the ropes but have a friend who is very experienced with sheep giving us a hand. Still too early to have statistics but our plan is to grow the flock to about 100 ewes which means we should be able to sell about 150 lambs per year.

What’s the plan with sales, wholesale or retail?

We plan to sell both to restaurants and the public directly, the same as we currently do with our redclaw. Likely to be whole or half beasts as we aren’t really set up for retailing individual cuts just yet. We also plan to sell live animals to other farms for breeding and growout.

Is there a distinct flavour to the Australian Whites?

Australian Whites are marketed as the wagyu of the lamb world as they have a high intra muscular fat content and the fat melting point is about 10°C lower than normal lamb fat (33 vs 43). This makes it literally melt in your mouth. This coupled with the clean flavour and fine grained muscles makes it one of the favourite breeds of lamb for chefs around the country.

Can you also give readers an update on the production of the crayfish and any challenges you have faced in the past 6 – 9 months?

Our redclaw production is going well. We have taken it slower this past year to build up our breeding stocks and increase the average size on the farm as most of our customers are keen on the larger sizes that we offer. The redclaw basically go into hibernation over winter as the water temperature drops, but this Summer is looking like its going to be a busy one.

Have you got any other plans in the pipeline to share with us about the farm?

We have many plans in the pipeline, we just need to sell lots more redclaw and sheep to be able to fund them, haha. Doubling our redclaw ponds from 4 to 8 hectares is on the cards in the next 3-4 years, and after that we plan to build a restaurant on the farm which will largely use produce from the farm.

OUTLAND DENIM

Outland Denim is not a company that started with money in the bank. Theirs is no rags to-riches tale. They started from the ground up. With the help of local community fundraisers, sausage sizzles, money borrowed from family and friends, and generous donations, this local and sustainable fashion label has grown legs...

As the 2008 movie Taken ended and the credits rolled, James Bartle left the cinema outraged and sickened to his core. Whilst the majority of people viewed the film with a feeling of horror and sorrow, before carrying on with their daily lives, the movie stuck with James, as did the devastating statistics. Over 50 million people globally, every single year, are exploited by human traffickers in the name of profit. It is a 150-BILLION-dollar industry.

It would seem that James and journalist wife Erica were fated to rescue and offer rehabilitation and education to Cambodian women exploited by traffickers, whilst simultaneously turning the fashion industry on its head. Three years had passed since watching Taken

It was 2011 and James, a then pro-motor-cross racer, was performing at an event as a freestyle motocross rider and serendipitously crossed paths with an NGO (non-

governmental organisation) representative who was also in attendance. After exchanging life-stories and sharing details, James would soon travel to South East Asia with the NGO, witnessing women being sold to sex traffickers first-hand. After seeing girls as young as 12 (and sadly it is so often much younger) forced to work in brothels, he knew there was no going back. This man, and later his team, became committed to the pursuit of freedom for others.

After discovering that it is mostly impoverished girls and women that are most vulnerable to modern day slavery in all its ugly forms, Erica and James, with a growing knowledge of apparel and hundreds of hours of research behind them, launched the ethical fashion label, Outland Denim, in 2016.

Creating a staple, non-throw-away garment like denim jeans has enabled them to employ women in Cambodia who have been rescued from trafficking. Employ them, train them as seamstresses, provide them with a sustainable living wage, empower them, and, as a result, keep them safe.

Over two years seamstresses are taught every element of the jean making process. From cutting, finishing and sewing, they have the ability to support themselves and their families and

48 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

progress their careers with Outland Denim. Founding this label has not been without its learning curves. Denim is one of the most difficult garments to produce and also one of the most environmentally damaging. Made from cotton, it requires huge amounts of water to grow, is sprayed with hazardous pesticides and uses highly toxic dyes. They refused to be another label adding to the degradation of the planet.

In 2019 they opened a stand-alone wash house in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, using state-of-the-art water and energy saving technologies. Today, every single garment Outland Denim manufacture is made with organic cotton,100% traceable denim, zero harmful chemicals (Outland Denim use plant-based dyes), 100% vegan materials and by aligning themselves with suppliers that share the same values and ethics, source the most sustainable raw materials. This socially minded denim label became the first Australian denim company to be certified as a B-Corporation: the highest level of sustainable practices. They have been awarded countless times and through their actions and transparency are forcing other labels around the world to follow suit.

However, in order to continue keep growing as a business and bettering the lives of women, we as consumers must take responsibility.

We have the power to change fast fashion. We can help brands like Outland eradicate human slavery. Supply chains must be questioned. Where did my clothes come from? Whose hands made my clothes? Was it a suffering eight-year old literally slaving away, or was it someone on a living wage choosing the life they live and learning a trade?

Six years down the track, Outland denim has continued to grow, learn and diversify. What started out as a brand that made denim jeans in only one colour wash, has expanded into skirts, blouses, jackets, and shirts and have aligned themselves with numerous fashion powerhouses. In the name of diversifying, Outland HQ have also opened up their doors, if you will, with a new Airbnb, The Barn 1877. Located on Tamborine Mountain, on spectacular grounds, you can stay in their perfectly rustic barn and sink into a weekend of seclusion with a loved one or write that book you’ve been meaning to for years.

KIBI RAW MINERALS

MINERAL MAKEUP

From a young age, skin care was something Jacqui South, owner and director of KIBI Raw Minerals, found her self drawn to. Jacqui’s mother gifting her her first pot of skincare goodness at the youthful age of 13, this small but significant event set her on a lifelong path in the beauty industry. Now, at the divine age of 53 (and still as youthful as ever), beauty and skincare have remained her absolute passion. Currently living on Tamborine Mountain in the Scenic Rim, Jacqui has always enjoyed a deep connection to the Australian landscape. Raised in country NSW and growing up in a small community, values such as hard work and community spirit run deep. You could say Jacqui is a salt of the earth type character, someone who radiates goodness, for the mind, body and soul. As a beauty educator, reiki master and business consultant she loves offering up advice and helping others reach their goals so it’s no surprise her path has led her to this point, developing a product that offers women an alternative to their daily make-up routine – something that 100% natural, cruelty free, toxic free and beautifying.

Jacqui shares her ethos about the brand and how she sees her product sitting in the marketplace.

“KIBI Raw Minerals aims to engage in dialogue about native flora and fauna, vibrationally rich clean ingredients with earthy wonders such as minerals and crystals. The natural beauty products available today are so extraordinary hence, my desire to help other women discover the benefits of this ever-evolving industry. There’s just no need to be putting chemicals on or into our skin,

I am a huge believer in holistic beauty, and products that help us feel truly naturally vibrant. A whole-body experience that embraces nature. The benefits of eating local produce and drinking fresh pure water are well recognised but the same principles apply to our skincareour skin is our largest organ.”

Jacqui goes on to explain just how powerful Australian native plants and minerals are, offering medicinal and healing properties known to indigenous Australians for thousands of years.

“Indigenous peoples instinctively understood how to live sustainably and organically while drawing nourishment and healing from nature – we can learn a lot from their ancient knowledge.”

When it comes to ageing and skin wellness, most of us understand that the biggest culprit is our harsh Australian climate. That’s why KIBI Raw Minerals product range offers naturally flawless coverage while also protecting your skin from sun damage. The BB cream with SPF 30, mineral powder foundation, mineral bronzer, and mineral blush are all Australian certified vegan friendly, certified cruelty free and toxic free. Shop the full KIBI Raw minerals range, which also includes antioxidant rich wildcraft organic teas, make-up tools such as brushes and beauty blenders as well as gorgeous gift cards, for the ones you love.

OUR SPACE PSYCHOLOGY

WITH LOUISA HONAN AND FERGUS TREVETHAN

52 SCENIC ROAD MAGAZINE

The phrase, ‘it takes a village to raise a family’ is as much of an acknowledgement as it is a statement. Within our modern communities, families can often struggle to find the support they need, which puts the requirement for professional support services such as counselling and psychology in high demand. Lengthy wait times prompted a local couple to open their own space, aptly named ‘Our Space Psychology’. With more and more families searching for the right psychologist or counsellor to work with, it was an obvious direction for Tamborine Mountain residents Fergus Trevethan and Louisa Honan.

Fergus and Louisa, along with their two therapy dogs Honey and Alby, have formed a unique practice that specialises in child and adult psychology and family counselling. ‘Our Space Psychology’ is a safe and caring environment for families catering across the entire lifespan (children to elderly), offering one on one sessions and family therapy.

“We offer a range of specialist assessments, which include autism spectrum disorder, behavioural, cognitive, education, functional and NDIS assessments,” says Louisa.

“Counselling can help people address their problems in a positive way, identifying their issues, exploring options, developing strategies and increasing selfawareness. Therapy and diagnostic testing can be an extremely helpful way of improving communication and enriching relationships”.

The psychology clinic, which resembles more of a family home than an office, provides numerous hangout areas; from the play area for children, with books and colouring in station, to the lounge room with bean bags, and tea and coffee facilities as well as an outdoor sitting area, there is a space to suit everyone. "Our therapy dogs add to the feeling of comfort and enhance the therapeutic process."

“We want people to feel as relaxed and as comfortable as possible, we want people to find their place at Our Space,” says Fergus. “At the end of the day, we want the best outcome for anyone who walks through our door, so they can live a happy and fulfilled life. We’re interested in tangible outcomes for our clients that have real life impact, whether that’s putting strategies, getting them back to work, building a child’s confidence at school, or gaining a formal diagnosis as child or adult. We are ultimately here to listen and help.”

To book your first 20 minute complimentary telephone consultation, mention this Scenic Road Magazine article and call Our Space Psychology today. Offer valid until October 31 2023.

AirBNB

STYLING

WITH SUZ FROM GRACE YOUR SPACE

A well-styled Airbnb can help create a positive impression, enhance the overall guest experience, and increase the likelihood of positive reviews and repeat bookings. Here are my top tips for styling your Airbnb:

1. Keep it simple: Don't go overboard with decorations or furnishings. Instead, focus on a few key pieces that will add warmth and character to the space.

2. Pay attention to details: Details such as fresh flowers, quality linens, and thoughtful amenities (such as extra toiletries or snacks) can make a big difference in how your guests perceive your space.

3. Create a theme: A cohesive theme can help tie the space together and create a more memorable experience for guests. Consider a colour scheme, a specific style or aesthetic, or a local or cultural theme.

4. Prioritise comfort: Your guests are looking for a comfortable and relaxing experience, so make sure your furnishings are comfortable, your linens are soft, and your space is clean and well-maintained.

Remember, a well-styled Airbnb doesn't have to break the bank. Small touches and attention to detail can go a long way in creating a welcoming and memorable space for your guests.

Having your Airbnb styled and photographed professionally will be a worthwhile investment, especially if you want to attract more guests and increase your bookings. Here’s why.

1. Professional photos can make a big difference: High-quality photos are crucial to attracting guests to your Airbnb. Professional photographers know how to capture the best angles, lighting, and composition to make your space look inviting and appealing.

2. Styling can help you stand out: A professional stylist can help you create a unique and attractive space that stands out from the competition. They can bring in decor, artwork, and other elements that will make your space more memorable and enjoyable for your guests.

3. It can save you time and effort: Styling and photographing your Airbnb can be a time-consuming and sometimes frustrating process. By hiring professionals, you can save yourself the hassle and focus on other aspects of running your Airbnb.

4. You can justify higher rates: By investing in professional styling and photography, you can justify charging higher rates for your Airbnb. Guests are often willing to pay more for a space that looks and feels more luxurious and comfortable.

If you're serious about making your Airbnb a success, professional styling and photography can be a valuable investment. Book your consult with Grace Your Space today 0416 265 836.

FOREST SCHOOL

Early childhood is like a beautiful season, children need time to ponder, explore, discover, and become curious. Opportunities to challenge themselves, develop life skills and immerse themselves in active free child-led play. Children naturally flourish by challenging their own bodies at their own pace, have opportunities to negotiate, be part of a team, develop social skills, be innovative and use their imagination. The world needs innovative and creative people and we believe in developing critical thinking skills. An example of this would be children using their imagination to see colours in the wind, hear the sounds of the earth not just compartmentalised knowledge - we value the ‘whole child.’ When you think back on your most memorable childhood memories, I can guarantee you that it involved a sensory rich experience and that is why it remains a childhood memory. Connecting with nature is a child’s rite of passage, children need to connect with place and culture.

We teach children ‘how to think’ not what to think as they develop confidence, resilience, grit, and determination. In addition, we ‘respond’ rather than react.

We take time to ‘be present’ and value the therapeutic qualities nature play provides. We recognise and celebrate each child’s individual journey and the endless opportunities it provides.

Our Acknowledgement to Country….Here is the land…. And here is the sky…Here are my friends….And here am I. We would like to say thank you to the Wangerriburra people from the Yugumbeh group for letting us share their land. We promise to look after it…The birds…The trees… The snakes… and the people too!

With our hands, our hearts and our heads.

C&K has cared for and educated for over one million children since we were established in 1907. We have over 330 kindergartens and childcare centres around Queensland, and as a not-for-profit organisation, children come first in everything we do. Find out more about us www.candk.asn.au

BLISS YOGA & PILATES

WITH JANIE COUTTS, OWNER OF BLISS YOGA & PILATES STUDIO AND FREEDOM HEALTH AND FITNESS BEAUDESERT

“A strong core will improve your technique, strength and stamina and compliment everything you do” -

As fitness expert Susan Trainor states above, a strong core will improve your technique, strength and stamina, which then compliments everything you do in everyday life or perhaps your sport or other training techniques. A big statement however it’s something that shouldn’t be overlooked. Both Pilates and Yoga share the same principles, they both focus on our core muscles and both, much to many people’s surprise, are incredibly easy to adjust to an individual’s fitness level. No matter where you are in your fitness journey, be it someone who is just starting out or someone who wishes to add a new dynamic to their program, Pilates or Yoga could (most likely should) be the answer and maybe, just maybe… it's the enjoyment level that you’ve been longing for with exercise and training.

Let’s talk benefits…

PILATES improves strength, balance, posture, flexibility, focus, coordination, body alignment, and lowers blood pressure.

The breathing techniques used during pilates can improve diaphragm movement which can improve stamina, this is good for runners and I’ve even been told by one of my members that her singing has improved (there’s hope for me yet!).

Golfers who attend a class each week will benefit also. The improvement in stability and flexibility helps their game due to better rotation, balance and hip movement.

Footballers find they can deal with the unpredictability of being tackled due to improved core strength. Reformer training is the perfect recovery day exercise to rebalance the body after a game.

During pregnancy, reformer training can help maintain strong abdominals and pelvic floor muscles. The breathing techniques used during reformer training can help women with being able to take strong deep breaths during pregnancy and childbirth. Continuing the exercise during pregnancies tends to help with easier deliveries and more energy to recover faster post-delivery.

Who is Reformer Pilates best for?

Almost anyone regardless of age or injury. Modifications can be made for everybody.

Reformer Pilates can be used to add variety to your weekly gym workouts or can be done multiple times a week as we have four instructors teaching classes throughout the week. Reformer training is so versatile each instructor programs classes differently and brings their own style to the studio.

YOGA is also taught in the Bliss Yoga & Pilates Studio numerous times a week with a variety of instructors who teach different styles of yoga.

Yoga improves cardiovascular fitness, digestion, joint health and blood circulation.

It’s a win win no matter where you are in your fitness journey. Enquire with our team today and attend our classes at Bliss Yoga & Pilates.

MARKET REVIEW

The place to be...

South East Queensland continues as the place to be and has proven as one of the most stable property markets in the country. Despite the past 10 months of interest rate hikes and market uncertainty throughout Australia, the local Brisbane and Gold Coast regions continue to outperform the other states.

Driven by supply shortages, high jobs growth, migration and cost of replacement the local property market saw the steepest annual climb in 13 years during 2021 as the relentless demand for property in Queensland reached its peak adding on average over 45% to property values in this time across the state.

In 2023 after a short period of adjustment to peak pricing, trending median values have stabilised and once again are beginning to improve only demonstrating further that the SEQ property market offers plenty of value to owners and investors locally, nationally and internationally.

Regional property markets surrounding Brisbane and the Gold Coast continue to outperform also as outstanding demand for rural and lifestyle property located close to city centres is as strong as ever. Meaning lifestyle areas are usually outperforming properties in both the inner and outer city suburbs. Prices have remained strong however days on market have increased since mid 2022.

It is worth noting that due to a short supply of premier A grade hinterland homes, farms and investment properties, a surplus of cashed up buyers for quality properties is providing for a seller's market where asking prices could just keep rising.

The Federal government forecasts suggest that Queensland’s population is expected to grow by more than 16 per cent by the time Brisbane hosts the Olympic Games in 2032 and that job availability will remain high throughout this period. The state remains one of the country’s most robust, if you’re looking to buy, you’ll be pleased to hear that you can get more bang for your buck in Brisbane compared to Sydney and Melbourne.

So…. if you are looking to sell in 2023, you can sell with the confidence that you can achieve good results.

As always preparation & presentation is the key to a great sales result. Ensure your property stands out from the rest by engaging an agent who will provide your property, whether big or small, a world class marketing campaign. Be sure to broadcast your property sale as far and as wide as you can afford. The buyers are out there.
