PAINTING WITH OIL STICKS, 16+ YRS Anna Mastronardi Novak In this hands-on class, you’ll discover the fun and freedom that sets oil sticks apart from other mediums. Through demonstration, learn the importance of good composition: mixing color, fat-over-lean approach, using oil washes and building up color. Then using your photos, sketches, or memory you’ll create your own work in an abstract or representational style. Basic drawing skills and knowledge of color is required to benefit from this class. Basketry ARTISTRY IN BASKETS WEEKEND WORKSHOPS, Nov 10 & 11 SPIRAL BEACH BASKET, 16+ YRS Kay Harradine Take inspiration from the seashore and weave a beach basket, starting with a piece of driftwood. Using rib-construction techniques, you will make a seashell-shaped basket that is truly a joy to weave. Round reed, seagrass and a variety of accent fibers will be available to choose from, so no two baskets will be alike. Suitable for all skill levels. Supply list provided at registration. Regardless of their intended function, baskets are vessels that enclose a volume of space. Explore this concept by weaving a capacious rounded form, using a simple open twining technique. Your basket skeleton will be woven from rattan reed – a user-friendly material from Asia, perfect for beginners. The basket will be covered with fine tissue and rice papers to give it a translucent skin. The surface may be embellished with a collage of paper, adding a suggestion of surface design to make your creation unique. All levels welcome. Supply list provided at registration. Su Nov 11 10am-4pm SF $20 M $60 NM $65 ASYMMETRICAL BASKETRY: CEDAR BARK OVERLAYS AND SKIP STITCH TWINING, 16+ YRS Polly Sutton Using western red cedar bark as the structure, this basket will begin with a 5-3-1 twill. The sculptural basket will be twined with Northwest sweet grass, using a skip stitch technique or triple twining. Overlays of cedar bark will accent the surface that will undulate from the tension of the twining. This 2-day workshop will offer an opportunity to create a unique piece. ENVELOPE BASKET, 18+ YRS Elaine Twogood and Sheila Wray Learn to make a fun-to-weave basket that begins with a prefinished wooden base and inserted spokes. It is done in a continuous weave over a mold, contrasting a plain weave with a twill. The “envelope flap” at the top on the front adds an attractive element. The approximate finished size is 4” L X 6” W X 7” H with a top circumference of 24”. Materials to be used: wood base, reed, cane. Perfect for beginning to intermediate weavers. All levels welcome. Want to stretch beyond basic lattice twining? Join me in this study in black and white, using a variety of lattice twining techniques: lattice twine, lattice twill, lattice X’s, lattice arrows, interlacing lattice braid, and a lattice lashed rim, all beginning with a 3/3 twill base and woven throughout in start/stop rows. You will explore bound weaves on your own terms as you design your unique sampler basket, choosing placement of color (black and/or natural) and where to incorporate the various lattice techniques. Materials used: reed (natural and dyed), Hamburg cane (natural and dyed), waxed linen. Some history of bound weaves and their usage will be discussed. WOVEN MENAGERIE, 18+ YRS Mary Etue Auld Explore basket-weaving techniques while you create your own trio of critters including a mouse, a horse, a cricket and a frog. We will use a variety of materials such as natural reed, western red cedar bark and paper. These make great ornaments, decorations or gifts. They can be made of many materials in larger or smaller sizes. This class will introduce you to diagonal plaiting and other techniques as you weave your own menagerie. All levels welcome. One of the beauties of working with wire is that it can move and stay where you put it. Jewelry • Flameworking • Beadmaking LEARN A CRAFT: SILVERSMITHING, 18+ YRS Donna Harris You will start by creating a beautiful bracelet from sterling silver wire. It will be bent to fit, soldered and a stone of choice will be added to enhance the bracelet. The design is very simple but extremely attractive and wearable. The second piece you create will be a ring, sized to fit your finger (or a friend’s) and enhanced with a stone to match your bracelet. If we have time, you will make another project of choice. Encaustic medium and paints (beeswax + damar resin) were used by early Egyptians, as well as by today’s contemporary artists. On day one, you will mount photos (yours or those provided by instructor) on birch plywood or Masonite. Basic encaustic technique, materials and studio safety will be discussed. Designed for the generalist teacher, this course focuses on teaching specific learning outcomes in art and writing, using book-making activities as a vehicle for learning. Schack-toberfest Art & Harvest Festival September 27 – 29 This harvest themed weekend at the Schack Art Center features such festivities as a glass pumpkin patch, glass pumpkin blowing demonstrations, pumpkin carving demonstrations, and “Make It Now” pumpkin classes in the hot shop. Admission is free. Saturday night is our second annual Beer, Brat & Glass Pumpkin event! The evening will include live music, glass pumpkin blowing demonstrations, beer from local breweries, bratwurst with all the fixings, popcorn and more! Tickets are $20 for Schack member, $25 non-members. Must be 21+ to attend.
