Painting BEGIN WITH WATERCOLOR, 18+ YRS Colleen Dunlap Watercolor is a great way to start your journey into art. You will learn about materials and the basics of color and design while mastering over 20 watercolor techniques. Students will produce representational works based on studio practice and instructor guided assignments. Develop your creativity and learn the natural attributes of transparent watercolor. Learn some new ways to approach an open-ended subject and play with some new techniques. For beginners to experienced painters wanting to learn techniques in acrylic and acrylic mediums. The focus of this two day workshop is to help students develop their own style using passionate and painterly brushstrokes. This wet-into-wet technique, working in either acrylics or oils, will help students demystify the process of painting. The instructor will demonstrate for the class and give one-on-one guidance. First day: students work from still life objects, second day: students bring their own inspiration to paint from. COLOR THEORY: PAINTING, 16+ YRS Tracy Kay Fraker Learn not only the characteristics of color but also pigment. We will create a split primary color wheel to gain a thorough understanding of color mixing. This series of enjoyable exercises will open your eyes to color and relieve your frustrations in color mixing. This is a great refresher course for experienced painters or introductory course for beginners. The instructor teaches this class with Golden brand acrylic paints. Both black and color inks will be used, and a variety of brush strokes and forms will be covered. There will be demos, exercises, and plenty of one-onone instruction. Learn the process of translating the three-dimensional reality of the human head into the two-dimensional language of portraiture. Emphasis will be on pragmatic painting and drawing skills, with a focus on the creation of light and form, expression and personality. Some drawing skills are required. INTRODUCTION TO FABRIC PAINTING, 16+ YRS Tonnie Wolfe Do you want to create your own fabric? Fabric painting is an easy way to create original cloth for quilts, wearable art, and embroidery. Spend a few hours experimenting with Dye-Na-Flow, acrylic, and fabric paint using both wet and dry techniques. You will leave class with a better understanding of surface design and how colors work together, along with a stash of your own unique hand-painted fabrics. Supply list provided at registration. This will be a mixed media experience working both in class and out, individually and in groups, with both process and completion. We will also study color palettes, and ways to break out of the same palette rut. Learn exercises that will assist you in finding your individual artistic vocabulary. All levels welcome. PAINTING WITH OIL STICKS, 16+ YRS Anna Mastronardi Novak In this hands-on class, you’ll discover the fun and freedom that sets oil sticks apart from other mediums. Through demonstration, learn the importance of good composition: mixing color, fat-over-lean approach, using oil washes and building up color. Then using your photos, sketches, or memory you’ll create your own work in an abstract or representational style. Basic drawing skills and knowledge of color is required to benefit from this class. Jewelry COPPER JEWELRY CREATIONS, 18+ YRS Donna Harris Make a linked bracelet of copper and a ring or two (if time permits). Yes, copper, beautifully bright and totally fashionable! The bracelet will be hand-cut by you, stamped with your design, polished to a finished sheen and worn with pride. The ring(s) will be made from sterling silver wire (no soldering), and you may add a stone if desired. It will be bent to fit, soldered and a stone of choice will be added to enhance the bracelet. The design is very simple but extremely attractive and wearable. The second piece you create will be a ring, sized to fit your finger (or a friend’s) and enhanced with a stone to match your bracelet. If we have time, you will make another project of choice. There will be very little soldering and sanding, and you’ll leave with some very beautiful pieces! ETCHED METAL AND POLYMER CLAY STACK RINGS, 18+ YRS Meredith Arnold Discover metal etching, wire and polymer clay in this fun and infopacked class. You will learn everything you need to know about etching alternative metals including etching solution, tank, a variety of resists, forming metal, various metals, short cuts and more. Then you will proceed on to texturing, forming and curing polymer clay. Once you have made all of your customized components, it’s time to create interesting stack rings with wire! SILVER CLAY JEWELRY WORKSHOP, 18+ YRS Celeste Douville Making things by hand nurtures us, connects us to our heritage and is green and frugal. Precious metal clay is an innovative (and recycled) material composed of particles of silver suspended in an organic binder. When fired, the binder burns away leaving a piece of pure silver. You will learn the art of gathering glass from the furnace, and using fire, gravity and simple hand tools you will create forms of various shapes and sizes. No Experience Necessary. You will learn how to make layered, multi color stringers to use in the design of a flower or jellyfish style marble. This class will emphasize flame settings, flame region, and using gravity to achieve a design that will “bloom” inside the marble. From blowing, blocking and shaping to using specialized hand tools, this class will give you a good base on which to build the skills necessary to create functional and artistic objects. GLASSBLOWING II 18+YRS Jesse Nelson If you already know the basics of blowing glass, but aren’t quite ready to work on your own, this class is for you. Color application, handles, bits, and wraps will be covered. You will also learn how to operate the furnaces and annealers on your own. This class will prepare you to pass the Schack studio rental test. Prerequisite – at least one year of recent glassblowing experience or instructor permission. Be it a paper “to go” tray or a sit down family place-setting, no matter the shape or material they all represent the same thing, an offering. What happens when we show respect to our food by honoring it with a hand blown glass vessel? Explore the concept and art of blown glass plate and platter making in this twoday workshop with artist Jen Elek. Bring paper and small objects to place on the plate for interesting printed effects. Take the 5x8-inch plate home to make more prints, it will last 2-3 days. All levels welcome. SURFACE DESIGN ON FABRIC AND PAPER: 16+ YRS Tonnie Wolfe Turn paper or commercial fabrics into works of art using a variety of surface design techniques, including printing, masking, “resists” and metallic effects. Students will experiment with fabric paint, acrylic paint, ink, metal powders, foils and other media using a variety of tools. The final product can be used for quilts, mixed media paintings, collage, or as a reference for future art projects. Supply list provided at registration. Supply fee payable to instructor at class. THE PRINTED IMAGE, 18 YRS+ Barbara De Pirro Learn the basics of creating monotype and relief printed images. Both methods create unique results; the pressure of printing creates texture and pattern not possible when painting directly on paper. You will explore techniques of transferring imagery without a press, using water based media, acrylic paints and slow drying mediums. The actual process of creating each print encourages spontaneity and openness to fresh unexpected results. Create art that can stand on its own or a supply of hand printed papers ideal for mixed media compositions. All acrylic products are graciously supplied by GOLDEN Artist Colors. E N C A U S T I C EXTREME ENCAUSTIC BASICS, 18+ YRS Lisa JonesMoore This is a one day “crash” course in the art of encaustic! Encaustic paints are made of beeswax, damar resin and pigments. Learn how to paint and “fuse” layers with heat, add mixed media, color and even collage! The instructor will start the class with an extensive demonstration of basic techniques. You will have plenty of time to make encaustic “technique tiles” on small pieces of masonite board. This is a great class for those who are not sure if they want to commit to more extensive encaustic workshops. Repeat students are welcome! Supply list provided at registration. M O S A I C INTRODUCTION TO GLASS MOSAIC, 18+ YRS Jules Anslow Are you infected with “Glass Fever” but the hot shop is just too hot? Compose a couple of cool “glassterpieces” and discover new glass mosaic skills! Learn to cut glass, custom-color grout, explore a bit of history and add some lingo to your “glass” vocabulary. We’ll be creating two projects: a wall hanging with a mirror and your choice of a smaller project. This class is a prerequisite for the “Glass on Glass Mosaic” class, taking place in Summer 2012. PRINTMAKING TECHNIQUES FOR THE CLASSROOM Ann Morgan The Schack Art Center continues to collaborate with the Everett School District to provide Art Technique Classes. This class is designed to familiarize teachers with a wide variety of printmaking techniques for the K-8 classroom. The first three sessions will include non-press techniques such as eraser prints, Styrofoam printing, linoleum block printing, string prints, “rubber” stamps, silk screen and more. The last session will cover printmaking processes utilizing a press. Cost: $70 ($60 + $10 processing fee) covers instructor, facility, supplies, and instructional materials.
