To compose ‘Musique pour faire plaisir’ (music to give pleasure) was the declared aim of Jean Françaix. Born in Le Mans in 1912, he discovered his personal style, which was characterised by intricate rhythms, polyphony and French elegance, very early on with his Concertino for piano and orchestra. This work, first performed in 1934 and directed by Nadia Boulanger, made him famous as a composer and piano virtuoso overnight. The same merry vitality and inventiveness also marks the works by which he is best known: the chamber music for wind instruments. Yet instrumental jollity by no means pervades all of Françaix’ music: apart from five operas and 16 ballets, the oratorio L’Apocalypse selon Saint Jean (The Apocalypse of St. John) may be described as his most important work. Receiving its first performance during the time of the German occupation of France, the profound, occasionally unfathomable piece reveals the versatility of the composer, who died in 1997.

„Musique pour faire plaisir“ zu schreiben, war das erklärte Ziel von Jean Françaix. Seinen Personalstil, der sich durch raffinierte Rhythmik, Polyphonie und französische Eleganz auszeichnet, fand der 1912 in Le Mans geborene Françaix schon früh mit seinem Concertino für Klavier und Orchester. Das 1934 unter Leitung von Nadia Boulanger uraufgeführte Stück machte ihn als Komponisten und Klaviervirtuosen schlagartig bekannt. Die gleiche heitere Vitalität und Erfindungsgabe prägt auch den bekanntesten Teil seines Schaffens: die Kammermusik für Blasinstrumente. Doch herrscht bei Françaix keineswegs ausschließlich instrumentale Heiterkeit: Neben fünf Opern und 16 Ballettmusiken kann das Oratorium L’Apocalypse selon Saint Jean als sein Hauptwerk bezeichnet werden. In der Zeit der Okkupation Frankreichs durch Deutschland uraufgeführt, offenbart das tiefe, mitunter abgründige Werk die Vielseitigkeit des 1997 verstorbenen Komponisten.
