T

he vibrancy of the region is always striking. Perhaps it’s the contrast to the Victorian environment I call home, but the Gold Coast, and in particular Sanctuary Cove, always impresses me. The Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) unsurprisingly makes up a major component of my travels to the area, but not necessarily for the show itself. SCIBS marks the first of a long season here in Australia, and thus is often the first chance to sample new models and accessories for the coming year. Our role, to educate you on what matters, hinges largely on these new opportunities. Releases from Horizon, Maritimo, Monte Carlo, Whitehaven and Axopar excite the team immediately, but beyond the established brands are many newcomers and returnees. This year’s return style icon Ferretti marks a turn in confidence in the marketplace and one we feel sets the scene for a big year ahead. As it always does, SCIBS 2016 will no doubt set the trend for fashion, lifestyle and boating.

hen the gates swing open for the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) on Thursday morning, it won’t just be industry representatives flooding into the picturesque site. Boats and the ocean have a unique ability to capture the imagination of anyone who’s ever spotted a white sail disappearing over the horizon, or perhaps pictured themselves on a sunlit aft deck, with a glass of something chilled to hand. There are plenty among us who enjoy nothing more than a lazy day wandering up and down the marina dreaming of the possibilities offered up by those acres of gleaming white fibreglass. For every enthusiast, there are plenty more for whom boats are where they make their living – for these lucky people SCIBS is about business. But whether drifting or making deals, there’s so much going on in and around this marine extravaganza that it pays to arrive armed with a plan. The range of products on offer can be daunting and on busier days it’s easy to be swept along in the crowd with little chance to focus on the task at hand. Naturally, the boats are the heroes of the show and this is where you can admire new releases from your favourite builders or spot something completely different – cast your eyes over At The Marina, starting on page 40, for a quick taste of what you’ll find.

CONSIDER YOUR NEEDS Think about what you want and plan where you go. Are you searching for that elusive do-it-all first boat, or perhaps upgrading with long voyages in mind? Maybe you’re just after a new outboard. Whatever your purpose, narrow your parameters and approach the Show with a single-minded focus. Any investment you make here – be it a boat or marine hardware – is likely to be significant, so you’ll need to be happy with it for a decent period of time before wanting to upgrade. SCIBS is also an opportunity to meet industry people who may be helpful in your search for knowledge and influential as your seafaring life develops. Good contacts are gold and SCIBS is a great place to find them. 20

LIST HOT ITEMS Prepare a list of items or boats you’re interested in, then use the Exhibitors List (page 100) to prepare a schedule of the relevant stands. If you’re after a certain brand, that’s covered in the Brand Directory (page 115). But don’t discount similar options. – you might be surprised by the many new releases or specials on offer.

TWO FULL DAYS History tells us the first two days of the Show are best for serious attendees. The crowds are generally smaller before the weekend, allowing exhibitors more time to properly explain the merits of their products. But even on quieter days there’s still too much to see in one visit, so take your time. It’s very easy to get caught on the marina for hours admiring shiny new boats, so set aside an extra day to tackle the serious job. And what’s the rush? SCIBS is all about having fun. Take the time to understand each vessel thoroughly, so you come away with the big picture.

ARRANGE SEA TRIALS A great boat is a terrific collection of small details, those little things the best boatbuilders do that make all the difference. But these won’t all be immediately apparent during your Boat Show inspection – what you can expect here is a taste of what a particular boat offers. That means you must be prepared to set time aside down the track for a proper sea trial. This need not be about taking on the biggest waves you can find, although that can be useful if the opportunity arises. Your sea trial is really about spending an extended period on the vessel and becoming better acquainted with the boat and those people who know her best – the boatbuilders. If you’re unsure about what comprises a quality build, don’t be afraid to hire an independent expert to help you assess your potential purchase.

FINAL ADVICE Above all else, enjoy yourself. Soak up the atmosphere, dine in style and plan a few extra things to do aside from the Show. The more engaging the entire experience turns out to be, the more comfortable you will feel about any serious purchase arising from it.

t was the soiree that summoned Frank Sinatra who headlined alongside Whitney Houston, in what is still remembered as one of the biggest events in the Gold Coast’s history. ‘The Ultimate Event’, held over the second weekend in January of 1988 was the celebration that saw Sanctuary Cove – Australia’s first resort-style master planned community, firmly planted on the map as the Gold Coast’s premier lifestyle and entertainment destination. It also herald the beginning of the four-day marine extravaganza, the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS). Now an iconic event, SCIBS has evolved into a quintessential tool for the marine industry, injecting $150 million into the local economy each year. The flagship event for Sanctuary Cove, SCIBS stands as one of the largest boat and marine lifestyle events in the Asia Pacific region, attracting nearly 40,000 visitors to a spectacular display of the latest and greatest marine products and services on offer each year. The Show features the best the marine industry has to offer in one location, from innovative marine products, kayaks, jet skis and trailer boats to multimillion dollar superyachts, offering exhibitors unparalleled exposure and sales opportunities.
Regarded as the place “where the marine business does business” with high-end brands exhibiting their latest and greatest vessels and marine products, SCIBS has always been the premier show for local, interstate and international vendors.

EXPLORE THE EAST COAST FROM THE SAFTEY OF YOUR OWN PRIVATE PARADISE OCEAN DOORSTEP An idyllic location that offers direct access to the Gold Coast waterways and oceans beyond, Sanctuary Cove Harbour is located upstream on the Coomera River amid native Australian bushland and features four man-made harbours. The Mediterranean style Marina is a state-of-the-art facility that has set the benchmark for boating communities Australia-wide with its wide-berth design catering for sports cruisers from 25ft through to larger vessels up to 120ft. Having recently undergone an upgrade, Sanctuary Cove provides upmarket recreational marina facilities to both casual and permanent berth holders. “With Queensland’s beautiful subtropical climate that allows us to go

boating 12 months of the year, and the myriad of islands and waterways that make up the Broadwater, it’s easy to see why the Gold Coast has become the boating hub of Australia. Therefore it is vital we invest in the Marina, and as winners of the prestigious Marine Industries Association of Australia’s (MIAA) ‘Gold Anchor’ award we have a reputation to uphold,” said Mulpha Sanctuary Cove executive general manager Keith Allardice. MIAA executive officer, Colin Bransgrove, said the accreditation was testament to Sanctuary Cove’s considered master plan, which provides luxury and a waterfront lifestyle that allows residents and visitors to float from home, to the village and onto the water.

LUXURY LIFESTYLE From memories to amenities, Sanctuary Cove is the ultimate resort destination. Booking a long weekend at the 5 star InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort allows for more time to discover the limitless activities available. Stay in luxury accommodation and play on two world famous courses or indulge at the day spa. The man-made lagoon complete with sand is the ideal spot to unwind and the turn down service always makes for a special touch after a busy day browsing the boutiques.

The show’s size and growth have always been a reflection of the boating industry’s rise. Like the Australian boating and marine industry, the show has shown resilience with the changing economic conditions. SCIBS general manager Johan Hasser, is extremely positive about the future of SCIBS, with Mulpha delighting in the involvement of every strata of the event, and cites this inclusiveness as the cornerstone of its ongoing success. “Not only has SCIBS grown exponentially with the Australian boating industry, it has greatly influenced boat builders and distributors, growing local talent and helping Australian brands evolve by providing the ideal networking platform to connect with customers, both existing and new.” sanctuarycoveboatshow.com.au With close to 250 days of sunshine and a worldclass boating lifestyle destination on your doorstep, Sanctuary Cove delivers more than any other area on the coast. In 2002, Sanctuary Cove resort was acquired by Mulpha Australia Limited. Since the acquisition, Mulpha has invested over A$300 million in infrastructure and built product to bring the Foundation Master plan to life. Underpinned by an award winning 226-berth marina; the vibrant Marine Village; the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort; two championship golf courses and a state-of-the-art Golf & Country Club, the $2 billion gated development is Australia’s leading and most successful masterplanned community. 28

FEEL THE NEED FOR SPEED? CHECK OUT COBALT BOATS

Cobalt Boats has a spectacular showcase in store, with several awesome boats for visitors to its display to experience. The Cobalt Water Sports Series 220 (WSS) Bowride is the culmination of three years of research and development, and stands fully prepared for endorphin-hogging high-flyers who demand large, predictable wakes. The new Touch Tech system stores profiles of individual skiers and boarders, and remembers their preferences for the ride out back. Then, cruise control, ballast, and trim tab adjust to deliver the exact speed and sort of wake that match those preferences. A simple tap at Touch Tech makes it all happen. Also at this year’s Show will be the Cobalt R5 Bowrider. Sleek with traditional elegance and the smoothest of quiet and aggressive rides, the Cobalt R5 Bowrider’s transom, swim platform, and sunpad are all cohesive with an integrated design offering ease and functionality. Cobalt will also be displaying the Marker One M27 pontoon boat showing that you can have luxury, performance, and recreational activities all in one boat. The M27 has something for everybody - skiers, swimmers, anglers, divers, snorkelers, and, of course, those just looking for a place to chill. Thanks to the M27’s innovative hull design, all aboard will enjoy a smooth, comfortable ride. Captain and crew will appreciate its rapid response and controlled stability in turns. Hulls of premium grade high gauge aluminium are bolted through a structural stringer system to an upper fiberglass deck for superior rot-free construction. And even with the maximum horsepower astern, the M27 maintains a balanced feel thanks to the patentpending power wedge. On the Marina MARITIMO’S M61 BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

FOLLOWING ITS HUGELY SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH of the M65 at last year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, Australian luxury cruiser manufacturer Maritimo Offshore is returning to SCIBS 2016 for the 13th year to launch the first M61 cruising motoryacht. Described as a ‘mini version’ of the M65, the M61 offers a lower entry-level price, requires less berthing space but has almost all the same features – albeit proportionally smaller – than its larger sibling, and is priced under $2.5 million. Maritimo’s sales and marketing manager Greg Haines said like the M65, this new model is also a serious motoryacht. “It has virtually everything that the M65 delivers, only slightly smaller. It’s ideal for people who have limited berthing area and cannot accommodate the M65,” Mr Haines said.

“The boat can come as a three-cabin, threebathroom configuration, or four cabins and two bathrooms, or you can even have an office by eliminating one of the bathrooms. “The M61 is a go-anywhere motoryacht that can accommodate a family in style, safety and comfort for some genuine bluewater passage making.” Mr Haines said the new M61 could be supplied with the popular Euro-style transom or alternatively can be optioned to have Maritimo’s traditional island transom or a fishing version. With an extensive display equal to any exhibitor at SCIBS 2016, be sure to add Maritimo to your ‘mustsee’ list when you visit this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Designed for serious cruising, with a range of 2000nm at 8kt, it can reach 18kt and its deep keel provides stability at sea. And because noise and vibration contribute to fatigue, Fleming has paid special attention to producing a yacht which has become the industry standard for a whisper-quiet smooth ride. The boat has teak decks and trims and a luxurious interior fit out, complete with State Room and a well-equipped galley. Be sure to catch the friendly team on E/F Marina and be one of the first to experience the thrill of the new 55. For more information go to flemingyachts.com

WATERPROOF ENTERTAINMENT

Featuring a shallow-mount case design, FUSION’s new MS-RA70 audio system delivers dynamic sound in a marinised space-saving chassis. The MS-RA70 allows independent control of balance and volume in two separate audio zones, with an additional line out and sub out linked to Zone 1 for the inclusion of an amplified speaker set or subwoofer. Users can stream music from compatible devices and the Bluetooth remote app allows you to browse music collections on compatible USB flash drives, as well as adjust the volume from a smartphone or tablet. The widescreen LCD display is optically bonded to eliminate the possibility of condensation or fogging and when mounted correctly, the front face is rated IPx7 waterproof – able to withstand the harshest marine environments. The MS-RA70 uses a composite glass-filled chassis to eliminate corrosion problems caused by dissimilar metals and can be installed conventionally on the 52

dash or integrated into a glass helm with a flush finish by removing the faceplate trims and recessing the mount. The MS-RA70N model adds an NMEA 2000 connector for integration with existing networks. The FUSION MS-RA70 and 70N are priced at $379.95 and $429.95 respectively. boat review  MARITIMO M65

“THE M65 ISN’T SHOWY O R G A U D Y. IT LEANS TOWARDS THE CLASSIC, A GENUINE OCEAN-GOING V ESS E L”

LEFT You won’t have to shout over the engines but you might have to speak up just because of the space BELOW A Maritimo hallmark, the internal staircase exudes quality

I

t is hard to imagine where Australian luxury motoryacht builder Maritimo will go from here. The M65 is a triumph – a capable performance cruiser with the pedigree and build to cross oceans, yet the contemporary styling of a city apartment with the emphasis on easy living and understated elegance. The M65 isn’t showy or gaudy. It leans towards the classic with an exterior shaped around practicality and safety, the hallmarks of a genuine oceangoing vessel. This yacht blurs the line between ship and cruiser. Ship-like with high bulwarks and walkaround decks, critical-system redundancy and long-range reserves, the interior is superbly practical, yet modern and stylish with an exceptional level of finish and detail. The M65 is greater than the sum of its parts, a Herculean leap over the M60 it replaces, reinforcing the Queensland builder’s innovative reputation. A standout at the recent Auckland On Water Boat Show, it’s worth noting that this M65 crossed the Tasman on her own keel in a shade over four days, averaging 12kt in a predominantly fresh westerly breeze and a three to four-metre quartering sea. Long-serving Maritimo test skipper Russell Fleming guided the M65 to the Land of the Long White Cloud and declared the yacht had not only performed faultlessly but proved to be extremely sea-kindly, comfortable and dry. He singled out the 900hp Scania diesels as contributors to onboard comfort.

56

BILL’S BOAT The M65 show boat is hull #3. Owned by company principal Bill Barry-Cotter it’s doing duty as a private yacht as well as a demonstrator and is the first M65 fitted with the 16.0L Scanias now offered as the factory engine, replacing the 900hp Volvo Penta D13s. Options include 1200hp Caterpillar C18s and MAN diesels. Barry-Cotter’s preference for the Scania lies in its superior cruising efficiency and continuous rating reflected in the 500-hour servicing schedule while giving nothing away in performance, propelling the 36,000kg (dry) M65 to a shade under 27kt at WOT. The M65’s engineering is nothing if not robust. The attention to detail lavished on its systems is evident at every turn and reflects vast experience and uncompromising approach to quality. Systems redundancy features highly in critical areas and might best be described as a ‘belt and braces’ approach.

CUSTOM BUILD The M65’s success didn’t happen by chance; it comes from engaging with the audience. The M65 is the product of considerable input from Maritimo owners, who are well-placed to drive innovation and change. At over $3.5 million as seen here, M65 buyers reasonably expect to have a hand in the look of their boats and options are limited only by your imagination. However, buyers haven’t wandered far EXPERIENCE OCEANS OF AWESOME

from standard specification save for aesthetics, which speaks volumes for the boat’s clever design.

Maritimos, offering a more purposeful and powerfullooking boat with flush cabin sides, massive foredeck and acres of beautiful quartersawn teak.

DOCKSIDE IMPRESSION The M65 is imposing dockside, and the large flat sections of the superstructure that tower over its expansive footprint create unavoidable windage that will need careful management in tight spaces. That said, bow and stern thrusters are appropriately sized and offer remote functionality from the walkaround deck. Manoeuvring, as skipper Fleming puts it, is largely a case of mind over matter. It might look daunting but it need not be and those familiar operating the M48 and M60 should have no difficulty. The extra length in the M65 hull has allowed Maritimo to build ever higher and yet retain a stylish sweptback look. Combined with the subtle deck sheer aft, this culminates in arguably a sweeter looking motoryacht than its moulded-wing predecessors. The exterior styling has moved away from the more curvaceous European-influence seen on earlier

“THE AC C O M M O DAT I O N PRESENTS A LEVEL OF FINISH AND REFINEMENT BECOMING OF A S U P E RYAC H T ” ABOVE Master suite is on par with many bigger boats both in terms of space and sheer luxury RIGHT Guest accommodation won’t leave your VIPs feeling short-changed

STAR GAZER Inside, the harder you look, the greater the detail becomes – the faultless mirror-gloss finish of the teak cabinetry, the soldier-straight stitching of the leather accent panels and the sophisticated LED lighting secreted under saloon bunk fronts and window pelmets. Yet the M65 is inviting and homely. It begs to be enjoyed. There is none of the pretence that makes some boats stiff and formal. Barry-Cotter’s aim was to create a home away from home and he succeeded. From the massive flybridge skylounge with sweeping 360-degree views to the understated luxury and practicality of the saloon and aft galley, the M65 has options for any occasion, formal or informal. The skylounge is a world in itself. You can kick back on the chaise port of the helm station and chat with the skipper, or simply take in the views. Aft is a balcony with table and chairs – perfect for a spot of stargazing. The skylounge can be configured to provide an independent living space with self-contained galley and bar – ideal for extended family cruising. In our example the emphasis was on group entertaining, with an aft wetbar and entertainment centre to port, flanked by a beautiful bi-fold teak table and L-shaped leather settee. With reverse-cycle air-con, electric moonroof, opening windows and full-height bi-fold doors opening onto the aft deck, the M65 is a boat for all seasons.

TOTAL CONTROL The helm station is set around three multifunction Simrad displays in the dash. FLIR night-vision comes standard and CCTV cameras give the skipper eyes in the back of his head. Rain-sensing wipers keep the view clear ahead and the M65 has engine remotes at the bridge, on the skylounge and in the cockpit. It’s also equipped with self-launching 20kW Onan generators, a watermaker and generous tankage.

CENTRE OF ATTENTION Descending the internal staircase, the rear saloon doors open onto the expansive cockpit. True to tradition, the galley is the central hub to which guests will be irresistibly drawn. Set around a stone-topped island servery, the galley offers a double-door fridge-freezer, Miele four-burner cooktop, microwave, rangehood and dishwasher. To port, a complementary wetbar features a builtin wine cooler along with icemaker and cocktail cabinet. It’s also the nerve-centre for the onboard

entertainment secreted under the flybridge staircase. The mid-ship saloon is centred on a magnificent teak dining table giving formal dining for eight. To port, a second lounge doubles as a sofa bed.

ACCOMMODATION LEAP The M65 presents a level of refinement becoming of a superyacht. A full-beam master isn’t a new concept, but the full-beam master en suite hidden behind the king-size bed is. A magnificent addition, it features a multi-jet shower and his and hers vanities. Storage abounds in cedar-lined hanging lockers and drawers built into every available space. Neat touches include the chaise lounge beneath the opening portlights and the writing desk opposite. There are two VIP cabins, each with en suite. The first, to port, is larger than many 50-footers’ staterooms, while the second, in the bow, is also large and comfortable, its en suite doubling as the dayhead.

GRAND COCKPIT The cockpit and swimplatform are beautifully detailed, with everything neatly concealed to create a seamless open expanse. On the lower level are the barbecue, fridge/freezer and walk-in transom access to a massive

“ T H I S I S A YAC H T T H AT B LU R S T H E LINE BETWEEN SHIP AND CRUISER” aft lazerette with space for toys and fishing gear. The hydraulic swimstep lowers into the water, letting guests enjoy the ocean without any worries. The cockpit is also fitted with an almost full-beam transom lounge and a solid teak table.

GLIDE TIME Eight tonnes heavier than the M60, the M65 is solid yet the solid GRP hull has heaps of buoyancy aft, providing an early lift and reduced planing speeds. With trim tabs as standard and heavy-duty hydraulic steering, the M65 is surprisingly agile, rising rapidly to the plane without pointing her bows to the heavens. Throttle response is positive yet vibration from the Scanias barely put a ripple in our coffee.

LAST WORD The Maritimo M65 is a maestro in the truest sense, as inspirational as it is aspirational. If you’re looking for a step-up in comfort, practicality, style and sophistication, you’ll find it in the new M65.  60

DOMETIC SEA XCHANGE WATERMAKERS

Travel for extended periods without having to dock for freshwater – make your own water anywhere with a Dometic Sea Xchange watermaker. The compact SE Series gives recreational boaters the luxury of freshwater while ocean cruising, producing 1325 to 4542 litres per day, using reverseosmosis technology to turn seawater into pure water. The Dometic Sea Xchange SE fits anywhere – it even disassembles into individual modules that can be mounted separately for more flexibility. Built for reliability, durability and rust resistance, the SE Series uses 316 stainless steel for the high-pressure pump, high-pressure regulating valve and boost pump motor shaft. The high-pressure pump and boost pump are the most durable and efficient available and the enclosed and fancooled motor has thermal protection. SeaXchange watermakers automatically back-flush after they’re turned off, or can flush automatically as part of a program function. They can also be turned on and off remotely without adjusting the high pressure pump, whereas with some watermakers you must turn the high pressure pump down before starting. Other features include a backlit computer controller display and commercially available seawater membranes. The addition of a quality and reliable Dometic SeaXchange watermaker has may advantages. Carrying hundreds of litres of water on board increases the drag on your boat, burning more fuel. Additionally, you have the peace of mind that your water is fresh and pure. For a limited time, get a free remote panel with the SE600Z compact, allowing you to turn on your Watermaker from the helm.

EXPERIENCE OCEANS OF AWESOME

ooking like an elegant boat from a sophisticated European yard with Down Under robustness, the Whitehaven 6000 begs to be called a superyacht, as its quality belies its modest length. We’d all like a superyacht. Essentially it’s your own luxury boutique hotel, where you unpack your bags once and visit it whenever your heart desires. You’re guaranteed a room with a view and if you don’t like your neighbours you have as many possibilities to get it right, as you have locations to drop the anchor. If you take that feeling of boutique hotel and scale it down to a designer beachside villa with water views, you get an idea of this boat; an up-market feel, with fixtures and fittings of superyacht quality.

DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE The Whitehaven range is the result of Keith and Ryan Hanson’s 40 years of Australian maritime involvement, blended with the experience of one of the finest boat manufacturing regions in the Asian Pacific. Taiwan now has a long reputation for high-quality established and recognisable names – Horizon, Nordhavn, Johnson and Ocean Alexander are all built there. New Ocean Yachts is no newcomer either. It builds some of the finest vessels up to 115ft (35m) in length, while the company president is a naval architect responsible for some terrific hulls over the years. This Whitehaven is no exception. A variable deadrise for soft entry, combined with spray strakes and the inverted chines running far aft and flattening, gains hydrodynamic lift and makes for

a dry ride. It knocked down the spray at around 30kt and turned smoothly from chine to chine. The chines start high and run aft, ending at the beamiest part of the hull below the waterline. From there they flatten out and the width carries aft. Keith explains that maintaining the beam maintains the sea-keeping benefits of the variable deadrise and adds stabilising effects from the flattened chines. With added lift and reduced wetted surface you reduce resistance, resulting in greater speed and economy. The flared bow section creates buoyancy forward, which reduces the ability to bury the bow and take solid water on board – and when you are out there in the lumpy stuff, less green water on deck means greater stability with minimal free-surface effect.

DEBUT SUCCESS Approaching this vessel from astern gives you a feeling that this is something special. The day after its debut something was abuzz on the decks. By the look of the champagne glasses there had been a celebration. It turned out a Show visitor has chased them down that day with a deposit to secure this magnificent boat while the rest of its admirers were still putting their ducks in a row. By the time we arrived the buyer had left and it was time to cast off the lines for a blast out onto the Gold Coast Seaway on a stunning afternoon. From astern the high full railing that surrounds the hydraulic swimplatform is reassuring – lower it to wading depth and it could act like an impromptu plunge pool. With a 450kg lifting capacity it can handle big toys on the back and with a stern garage housing a 3.2m tender, you can enjoy the expansive area free of clutter or load a three-seater jetski without issue. CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE Stainless steel railings exemplify the high-quality finish throughout; The rear deck is an ideal breakfast spot; Swimplatform adds space for toys – tender goes in the garage forward

ENGINE ROOM To port of the tender garage is a watertight transom door that leads down to the engine room. This could be a fish-processing area, its highly polished stainless steel bench looking hygienically ready to fillet the pelagic catch. It’s really a workbench with sink. Above it, the AC panels encased in industrial boxes are clearly labelled and well away from the living areas. Forward are two 1000hp C12.9 common-rail diesel Caterpillar powerplants, with the rest of the engine room laid out in big yacht fashion. Compressors are at eye level, forward of the engines, with batteries below the floor to keep the weight low. Considerable effort has gone into making this a functional room – and if you’re mechanically minded you’ll love the second workbench with vice.

COCKPIT Above the waterline, the elevated cockpit is a platform for al fresco living. Whitehaven understands that while this boat can go places, 90 per cent of time aboard is 64

going to be at anchor and therefore it should feel as easy as life shoreside. Huge double-drawer refrigeration takes care of entertaining needs without stepping inside – one drawer holds drinks, the other fare for the barbecue. Direct internal access to the flybridge is available via stairs on the starboard side. Multi-purpose in function, it is far from just a place to drive the boat. A wet bar, flip-down TV and comfortable leather lounge with slide-out double bed make it another zone altogether, topped off with air conditioning and balcony. Custom leather helm chairs are accented with the same high-tech fabric inserts found in Aston Martin seats – this boat is about luxury as well as function. It’s fitted with a clean dash, touchscreen navigation, electronic engine and thruster controls, and a Yacht Controller joystick located on the port side – combined with an opening window it’s a simple way to bring her in port side to. Precision is further enhanced by the Twin-Disc gearbox allowing more precise adjustments. The yacht control features are repeated on the starboard side of the flydeck, giving you vision of the whole transom and the entire starboard side. That’d be enough for most people but a wireless yacht controller is also supplied on a lanyard, allowing you to walk around the boat to gain the best position possible for delicate manoeuvres.

ENTERTAINMENT ZONE Back on the main deck, the galley has a huge doubledoor refrigerator with freezer drawer below to bring all the convenience from land to the boat. The four-hob cook top concealed below the custom Corian bench is 66

recessed to a decent depth to holds pots and pans in place without the need for the less attractive fiddle. If you’re not cooking, you gain bench space with the strut-assisted lid closed. The flush bench runs to the most appealing galley sink I’ve seen – a gorgeous dark grey graphite by Franke that completes the unpretentious yet stylish galley bench. The workspace is complemented by an ample island bench and concealed behind the cabinetry and below the largest panel of glass possible is a wine fridge. Forward of the galley is the saloon, the step up offering clear views from all seats while opening side windows allow fresh air to flow in. The arrangement is very social – dining at the table is possible for at least five people and casual seating with a removable coffee table to starboard adds another five or six seats. A popup rotating television is available when needed with the AV gear subtly tucked away but always available forward of the starboard settee.

“THERE ARE A LOT OF SMALL TOUCHES AND CLEVER THOUGHTS…”

ACCOMMODATION Going below reinforces that they’ve gone to great lengths to create truly liveable accommodation. Starting with the third cabin, there is a perceivable difference between this and some rivals out there. The extra-wide door creates a sense of greater volume, and there’s also generous space between the bunks and the cabin wall even with the door closed. The berths are a good two metres long and there’s ample storage too. A shared bathroom serves the VIP cabin forward and the third cabin. It is stunning, with a feature wall in the shower of scalloped grey and white tiles, teak seat and teak slatted floor. Access can be gained privately from EXPERIENCE OCEANS OF AWESOME

influenced design, flooded with natural light and finished with touches that are more than you’d expect. The day bed entices you to lie down and read while the writing desk/vanity would make a fine spot to wax lyrical. The cedar-lined hanging wardrobe offers space to store your shoes and hanging items.

ON DECK A walk around the deck confirms the skills of the craftsmen who worked on this vessel. The stainless steel is to a very high standard, and the railings run at a reassuring height along the side decks. At the bow, nice touches include stainless covers protecting the windlass foot buttons and the spare anchor stored in place on the second bow roller, ready to be used rather than being buried at the bottom of a locker. the forward VIP stateroom as well as from the foyer. The VIP cabin is more generous than most forward cabins due to the voluminous bow. The bed isn’t at a towering height and retains plenty of space either side. The master stateroom is impressive and I really like the separation of bathroom and cabin. It’s on the same level as the forward accommodation but being the owner’s cabin has a few more refinements including dual showerheads – one movable plus an overhead rain shower recessed into the moulding above. The same Italian-styled feature tiles adorn the shower cubicle and vanity wall. Decent storage and a forward-facing head make for easy usage. Stepping down into the master shows the Hansons’ real achievement – full beam and full of superlatives. It is a space that rewards the owner with European-

THE WRAP There are a lot of small touches and clever thoughts that add up to making the whole Whitehaven 6000 Flybridge far greater than the sum of its parts. It is a very nice vessel enjoying clean, sleek lines that will appeal to younger families as well as the traditional enclosed flybridge buyer. It’s large enough to excel at most cruising missions, such as travelling long distances to new ports or sitting stylishly at a yacht club or anchored out. With an elegant and sophisticated layout and the room to entertain lavishly, the 6000 is at ease in any port and in all company. If you’re in search of a true yacht with the legs and luxury to enable you to travel to distant ports safely and in high style, get behind the wheel of one of these and experience it for yourself.

boat review  FLEMING 55

T

he Fleming 55 is a ‘passagemaker’. Don’t you just love that term? It conjures up images of luxury yachts cruising the Caribbean, extended sojourns through the icy waters of Alaska, losing yourself amongst an array of tropical islands and atolls, or intercontinental voyages across vast untamed oceans. Passagemakers define a nautical mindset achieved by many sea-dogs once they mature past the glitz and glamor of gizmos, gadgets and plastic fantastics. This is the real world of ocean cruising where 8-10kts is a practical speed and the ‘journey’ is the pleasure. It’s about confidence in your boat to challenge long passages, the seamanship to make the trip alluring to all, and the comfort and facility for the final destination. The Fleming 55 has all of these qualities. It was born a generation ago in the heady era of the mid-1980s. Since then there have been over 230 boats built and delivered and while the timeless design and character has been steadfast, the boats themselves have made rapid progress in technological advances, customer service and indeed fashion. Personally, I find it hard to fully evaluate such a complex machine in a single day, yet the basics are blatantly obvious. There’s premium fittings and craftsmanship around every corner. Put simply, from the seabed up she’s a beautiful hull, with the body to match.

72

BUCKET LIST Richard Rains is an unlikely boat owner, and yet his beloved Fleming 55 is the fulfillment of one of his life’s dreams. He’s a country boy from Dunedoo, a small town east of Dubbo, and refers to it as “the town they left the ‘R’ off …” He’s been in the international food trade for the greater part of his life with a particular emphasis on exporting meat products; hence he’s familiar with dealing on an international level. Fleming’s foundations are multinational. Tony Fleming is an Englishman who lives in America and worked for over 20 years with American Marine and Grand Banks. In 1985 Tony left with his business partner Anton Emmerton and commissioned Californian naval architect Larry Drake to design a premium pilothouse passagemaker which evolved into the Fleming 55. They chose the Tung Hwa boat yard in southern Taiwan as their manufacturing facility, a relationship which exists until this very day. The boat’s name, Post Office, should be pronounced with a definite gap between the words ‘post’ and ‘office’, thus meaning ‘after retirement.’ Richard has retired to Sydney’s North Shore and keeps his pride and joy at the pretty inner suburban marina at Kirrabilli. The new Sydney Harbour mooring has opened up some new activities and destinations: “I can walk for a couple of minutes to the east and jump on a ferry into EXPERIENCE OCEANS OF AWESOME

town, have a meal or a social drink at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron just to the west, or invite a crew down for a sunset cruise and stay comfortably on the boat due to the three large staterooms and two bathrooms. “The kids just love it, as will my new grandchild” he said proudly. “I’m still on a number of Boards and hence have regular meetings in the CBD, so the boat and its central mooring provide multi-purposes.” Richard does not aspire to any larger vessel in the future; he loves the classic style and doesn’t need to go any faster. The Fleming has the safety, the comfort, the passagemaking ability, yet can be easily handled alone.

From the deep, fully enclosed keel to the peak of the hard top the construction is spectacular. She’s a full fibreglass laminate with twin 500hp Cummins QSC 8.3lt, six-cylinder common rail, turbocharged and after-cooled four-stroke diesels with Twin Disc MG5075A, 2.53:1 transmissions powering the shaftdrives. All up she weighs in at a considerable 36-tonnes wet with a huge 3785lt of fuel in four tanks, 1135lt of freshwater and 378lt of blackwater capacity. Fleming hasn’t stopped at mere fit-out and weight to ensure maximum comfort and efficiency. The drive system is as smooth as her classy mouldings with oversized Silent Block engine mounts and Seatorque BOSS totally enclosed, oil-filled, shaft and thrust bearing assembly that greatly reduces engine vibration. They also offer perfect engine alignment and variable angle adjustment for vibration-free power transmission. The whole propulsion system is so well balanced that I could easily turn the Aqualloy 2.25in prop shafts and ZF-Faster four-blade nickel aluminum bronze propellers with one hand from the engine bay. There has been a tremendous attention to acoustics with very high quality acoustic lining and well-considered airflows adding to the overall construction quality, resulting in one of the quietest and most pleasant on-water experiences imaginable without going electric. One of the changes since previous testing of a Fleming a couple of years ago, is the upgrading of the hydraulically operated stabilisers to ABT-TRAC 7.5ft2 models with fins, winglets and color touchscreen control panel. The ride is also aided by a set of Bennett trim tabs. Sydney Harbour is full of all manner of fast moving, larger vessels including the ever-present ferry systems and hence there always seems to be a considerable wake to contend with. The Fleming remained extremely sure-footed throughout all situations and leaving the Harbour to contend with the open ocean under North Head certainly didn’t change things. 75

boat review  FLEMING 55

OPPOSITE The master is luxurious and well appointed BELOW Visibility is fantastic from the deluxe helm chair

The surefootedness is aided considerably by these big stabilisers, commonly used on much larger vessels up to 80ft (24.3m). Stabilisers normally don’t have much influence at very low speeds yet these noticeably aid the stability right down to 5kts. This is a true passagemaker, with a very confident ride. I asked Richard of his future seagoing ambitions and he told me that he would love to take Post Office around the top of the country and over to Broome. The vessel won’t take him long to master and certainly has the capacity, with the quoted cruising range of 2000nm at 8kts. Factory testing presents very efficient fuel consumption figures of only 43lt/h at 10kts, and we experienced 30lt/h at 9kts on the Harbour. She has achieved the international CE Category A Ocean certification for 15 passengers offshore and 22 in enclosed waters.

LATEST ELECTRONICS On advice from Fleming, Richard chose predominantly Raymarine electronics throughout the boat including a pair of gS series touchscreen multi-function displays both in the wheelhouse and on the flybridge. Fleming has defied many trends by choosing Boning 8.8in color touchscreen glass displays at both upper and lower stations for real-time engine information, and Fleming Central monitoring system for the whole boat as standard equipment. 76

EXPERIENCE OCEANS OF AWESOME

The array of electronics and accessories is endless but a noteworthy option is the five-function Yacht Controller wireless remote that operates the engines fore and aft, Side-Power thrusters and windlass for very easy docking and mooring control. When it’s time to relax there is interactive Bose and Fusion sound which is also linked to the custom popup television that is located in the rear saloon cabinet. This located near the slide-out bar, full-size upright fridge/freezer and the four separate icemakers, individually specified by Richard. “A man’s got to keep his drinks chilled” he declares with a smile and a wink. Powering the craft is a pair of Onan generators; a 13.5kW, 60Hz Onan eQD with a 9.5kW, 50Hz in reserve. In fact almost everything on Post Office has been doubled as a failsafe. Besides the generators there’s two windlasses, a backup unit for the Hypromarine hydraulic power steering, engine and gearbox control backups, multiple sets of safety equipment including four EPIRBs, multiple icemakers, fuel tanks, engine controls and more. There’s dual heat detectors, two engineroom extraction blowers, two Gianneschi freshwater pumps, four fire-retardant FRP fuel tanks with sight gauges and so on. Noteworthy inclusions in the fitout are the extra control station from the rear of the flybridge deck, a Reverso 24v fuel transfer/ polishing system, Sea Vision LED underwater lights, efficient LED lighting through-

GO WITH THE FLOW From the moment you step aboard from either of the two side companionways on upper or lower decks you will immediately be delighted with the endearing flow throughout all of the individual components of the boat. To me, the flow was a highlight. I don’t recall a boat that has so many different living and working areas that are so easily and so naturally traversed. The teak trim will leave you speechless; the joinery is faultless. The stateroom size and layout is eminently comfortable and inviting, the two bathrooms, fittings, lighting and storage simply exceptional. I particularly loved the pilothouse with its vision and dash layout reminiscent of a much larger vessel. The small pilothouse dinette gives interested passengers a comfy and secure spot to join the skipper. The Portuguese bridge out front really sets the scene for forward passage, and the immense foredeck could hold a large party in its own right, all confined by the security of strong and tall stainless steel rails that will even keep parents reassured over their children’s safety. I could spend many an enjoyable hour or 10 with a group of friends on the huge rear deck under the shade of the extended hardtop; or perhaps move the party upstairs for a better view and a bit more open air. The only limited space is inside the engine compartment where headroom is a bit limited, but for very good reason. Fleming has designed in a low centre of gravity to increase the safety and stability, the tradeoff for which is low head clearance in the engineroom. Whilst you may have to duck your head a bit, once inside, you will quickly forget the inconvenience as you notice the quality of installation of all of the componentry including the engines, generators, fuel systems, and all of the colour-coded electrical circuits and general plumbing. It’s little wonder that this same Fleming 55 has been in production for nearly 30 years and it is still popular, elegant, attractive and perhaps even more relevant than ever. When I recently asked a friend how he was keeping active and occupied in his retirement, he said: “You know what, mate, there’s not a rule in the book that says you have to go to the bank, and the post office all on the same day!” Exactly. If Post Office were mine I wouldn’t be visiting a bank too often either – they’d be much too far away!

I

love displacement-hulled boats. They reek of development since the dawn of time. They allow efficiency with huge capacity and indulge passengers in the serenity of boating. Integrity Boats has emerged from this long evolution to produce deep-keeled clinker trawlers that combine old-world charm with modern design and technology. They’re also great fun! Integrity’s spacious layouts reflect a sociable attitude and are filled with amenities to satisfy baby boomers and generations to follow. I guarantee that when a few boats raft up for a party, the Integrity will be the catering centre and social hub.

SLEEK AND SPACIOUS I was immediately attracted to the single diesel shaftdrive powerplant in the Integrity 440 Sedan’s beautiful trawler hull. She boasts a wide beam and a magnificent entry with a confident flared bow, combined with a sexy sweeping and stepped sheer line. But there’s much more to this lady. She flaunts an open floorplan with innovative rear saloon doors, which, when open, reveal the full flow from helm to rear-mounted galley and through to the inviting entertainment deck. From the moment you step aboard via the large rear platform and cockpit doorway, or through a sliding panel in the stainless steel siderails, the ergonomics ooze with intelligent design. There are full-width side companionways and a handy sliding doorway to the helm on the starboard side. There are no large steps to contend with and even the steeper sections from the 82

forward deck combine siderails and footholds to keep everyone secure. The easy ergonomics will especially appeal to boaties with diminished mobility. Overhead, a full roof section expands to cover the walkaround decks and transom creating a rear deck with all-weather canvas surrounds. There are zip-opening clears that completely enclose the wraparound rear lounge and a convertible rear table that transforms to an extra outdoor double bed. I would be more than comfortable sleeping out there on a balmy night, after a little too much good living. The rear platform is an ideal spot to get a party started. It features a folding rear ladder that swings deep into the water for easy access. A fisherman could attach a custom baitboard and rodholder; the standard stainless steel handrail would serve as the base.

ELEGANT ENTERTAINER As you enter the cockpit through the hinged rear door, you’re invited to relax in the plush rear lounge. Marine-grade vinyl upholstery is neat and functional, while the teak floor adds practicality and charm. There are a multitude of storage options under the lounge seating, including a large icebox that can be converted to a fridge-freezer, while a hinged floor hatch reveals a large lazarette for fenders, ropes and ancillary storage. The convertible rear saloon wall is a major attraction. The openings are formed from tinted safety glass panels in strong stainless steel frames. into secure mounts under the roof so you can open one or both to create an al fresco space to your taste. This is the only area of the entire boat that intrudes on the vertically blessed; when tilted, the fold-up panels allow around 1850mm head clearance, which is okay for most of us. The bottom panel slides into itself in front of the galley unit to open the cabin access; those with kids or pets will love the safe containment.

STRONG SEA LEGS This may be a great entertainer but it retains its seaworthy heritage with big open scuppers around the cockpit and walkways – they’re almost big enough to swallow a shoe as I nearly found out the hard way! The saloon is surprisingly spacious, considering the wide companionways both sides. Sliding windows create an open and airy feel, and our demo boat also had shade screens on all windows – a smart option. At the portside rear of the saloon we find a simple but very functional galley featuring twin stainless steel

“SHE CRUISES WITH GENTEEL DECORUM” sinks with a hot/cold mixer tap, Corian bench tops and a Westinghouse electric stove. You’ll be astounded by the amount of bench space and cabinetry on offer. Integrity uses local consultants to fit ADR-approved 240V systems with external shorepower and circuit breakers. Our demo unit also had an Onan 7kVa diesel generator; 4kVa is standard.

PRACTICAL LUXURIES The Integrity can support extended travel thanks to twin 140L Waeco fridge-freezers in the starboard cabinets, plus an LCD flatscreen TV for entertainment. Farther forward is an inviting convertible master dinette. I was pleased to note there is plenty of room to add portable chairs and maximise the dining area. The teak dinette table drops to create a further double berth and swivels for access to the engineroom. Opposite the dinette on the starboard side is a relatively simple helm that reflects the traditional flavour of the trawler in its walnut finish. The 225hp John Deere 6.8L six-cylinder turbo-diesel is driven by reliable twin-lever Morse controls and cables. She has analogue engine gauges and a switch panel for navigation lights and basic functions, plus twin toggle controls for the bow and stern 4hp Quick thrusters, and anchor winch control. This boat also had a Raymarine multifunction display fitted though I felt it was too small and would fit a bigger 10 or 12in unit. 84

A large stainless steel steering wheel drives hydraulic steering to the big rudder and though I initially found the helm seat small, the more I used it the more I liked it. I could see myself wiling away many pleasure-filled hours with my foot directing our course.

BEAUTY AND FLOW

CRUISING CONFIDENCE

A large flat dash with chart table sits below three windscreen panels equipped with wiper-washers; overhead is a communications console and separate switch panels for AC and DC power. The design flow makes the Integrity very easy to move around and the stairwell to the lower deck – the only one inside the boat – provides little obstacle. A bathroom to starboard boasts a separate shower. It’s well vented and open teak floors drain to the sump. I would call the portside stateroom the master. It has the larger double bed, a small wardrobe, down and night lighting. It is large, airy, light and comfortable, the only complaint that the bed’s a little low for some. The forward berth also has a double island bed. It appears slightly small at first but is most acceptable in reality. The wardrobes have cedar lining and the berth enjoys good natural light. There’s down and reading lighting and adequate ventilation, especially when aided by the optional air-conditioning.

Underway, the Integrity 440 Sedan is a dream. She cruises with genteel decorum, the big keel-protected rudder giving plenty of manoeuvrability while the heavy fibreglass hull gives a solid feel of confidence. I’m confident she’d travel beautifully offshore, with plenty of lateral stability from the 121cm keel. We travelled up and down the Gold Coast seaway with a ripping lee tide while towing a tender. As with all displacements, I estimate the 440 Sedan will travel at the average 8kt comfortably at around 1600rpm. We had no means of testing fuel consumption but Peter Hill assures me the boat uses around 10.5L/h at cruising speeds under normal load and conditions. The Integrity certainly maintained easy momentum with the heavy-but-efficient design, pushed by a large 58cm diameter Shili five-blade bronze prop. The 440 Sedan responds beautifully to a burst on the throttle for bar crossings and does it all with the confidence of the large block 6.8L powerplant. It was a pleasure to enjoy this old-world charm. In a world of mass-consumption, mass-production and go-fast technology, the Integrity is aptly named. When you’ve had enough of the headaches and fuel bills of planing hulls, you’ll find pleasure in this honest and comfortable stateswoman.

POWER AND PRIDE The 225hp John Deere 6068TFM diesel sits proud in the centre of the large underfloor engineroom. The electrics are neatly plumbed and hoses are doubleclamped where it counts. There’s a 750L fuel tank on 86

“ T H I S YA C H T S I M P LY BURSTS WITH INSPIRED THINKING”

I

t’s not every day you get the chance to step on board a new boat brand in Australia – especially one which has launched into the competitive top end of the market, squaring off against long-established names in the boatbuilding industry. What’s more, these brave souls have chosen to undertake their luxury project on our own fair shores, rather than use some cheap overseas labour hub. This was going to be interesting. Since first joining Trade-a-Boat’s motley band of pirate scribes in 2012, I’d heard whispers of the Elandra launch and had been following the tale with interest. Men after my own heart they were – meeting the establishment head on and developing their own innovative take on a luxury cruiser without being bound by staid traditions. The fact it was being done using skilled Aussie labour, while so many manufacturers were looking increasingly to Asia, made the project even more extraordinary.

90

A FRESH APPROACH But who are these blokes? Managing director Luke Durman and designer Tom Barry-Cotter both spent time at Maritimo before forging their own path, while operations manager Grant Senior cut his teeth at Formula Cruisers in New Zealand. The trio saw a niche in the market for low volume production of very high quality vessels, and in 2012 launched the Elandra name. Tom’s experience as an industrial designer saw him tasked with the exterior styling, while he and Luke collaborated with interior designer Jan Cormie on the contemporary look that defines the inside of this yacht. Grant meanwhile, crunched the numbers on hull design and weight studies which produced the 53’s tough lightweight hull, creating the balance of power versus efficiency that the team had sought. What lay waiting for us at the dock was a sleek sedan-style sportsyacht, offering 55ft (16.7m) of EXPERIENCE OCEANS OF AWESOME

Europe and the British have to offer in terms of interior styling, but with a flavour better suited to Down Under boating, and done in an elegant understated style.” On this first point it seems they’ve hit the mark nicely. American walnut features extensively throughout the 53, but laid with an unusual horizontal grain running uninterrupted along the panels and highlighted by shadow lines – reverse mouldings routed into the wood to break up the eye. This dark timber in matt varnish is complemented by lighter Ultraleather panels and roof liners throughout, including the rear lounge where wet bather bottoms might plant themselves occasionally. Adding to the fresh appearance is a terrific sense of space created by the open saloon and helm layout.

OFFSHORE POISE

LEFT The master features a full sized island bed as well as copious storage BELOW Throughout the 53 there is a sense quality was the central goal

single-level luxury and enormous interior volume for her length. Recent launches from the likes of Riviera, Maritimo and Integrity suggest the single level sedan is what people want right now, so Elandra’s market research appears to be bang on. Of course, this counts for nothing if your product doesn’t cut it. But gleaming metallic paint and a modern, angular profile is just what you’d expect at this end of the market – the 53 is certainly a headturner.

WORDS TO LIVE BY Luke Durman helped explain the principles behind Australia’s newest luxury motoryacht. “We coined the phrase ‘inshore elegance, offshore attitude’ as the motto for the company and that’s driven everything we’ve done in this boat,” he said. “We wanted to produce something very smooth-riding and with unrivalled performance – not just in terms of fuel efficiency, but in terms of top end speed and seaworthiness as well. “So ‘inshore elegance’ refers to the best of what 92

EXPERIENCE OCEANS OF AWESOME

So back to the brief. Having confirmed the understated elegance of the interior, how ‘bout that attitude? Leaving the speed limited zone of the Broadwater, our skipper eased the throttles forward and a promising whine accompanied a surge in power as we swept through the Seaway. Under the floor, two 800hp MAN R6 engines effortlessly drove us seaward, assisted by a ZF gearbox linked to oversized 2.75in shaftdrives. Like any legitimate speed machine, the Elandra 53 gives a sensation of travelling much more slowly than you truly are, so it wasn’t long before we were pushing 30-plus knots in a gentle swell. Acceleration was barely noticeable as the fine bow entry cut through the waves and she felt solid at the wheel. The brief to create a genuine seagoing motoryacht requires walking a fine line between strength and weight and Luke explained this required plenty of late nights puzzling over hull structure, engine choice and shaft angles, right down to the choice of propellers. The net result also had to be more fuel efficient than her competitors. “When we were designing the hull, we set some parameters for ourselves that it had to be eight to nine per cent more efficient than any shaft-driven boat on the market of comparable size,” Luke said. “They’re some big statements to make, because eight to nine per cent improved efficiency is quite a large amount, but from the data we’ve seen, in some rev ranges, it’s 15 per cent better.” A significant part of this equation can be attributed to the hull lay-up which sees three layers of quadraxial E-Glass reinforced with Kevlar. Hand-rolling allows Elandra to achieve a glass-to-resin ratio of around 50:50, resulting in a very lightweight but incredibly strong running surface. Absolute belief in this system has seen the company offer a four year ‘stem to stern’ warranty on workmanship and a 10 year warranty on the hull – that’s confidence in your product. 93

INSPIRED SMARTS Another feature which sets the Elandra 53 apart is the clever use of technology. Sure, there’s all the latest hi-tech gear at the helm, but what’s more impressive is the way these components manage the yacht. Sitting alongside twin 16in Simrad NSO Evo multifunction touchscreens on the Ultraleather-wrapped dash is a compact BEP CZone unit. Despite a modest appearance, this baby’s the heart of the Elandra –in combination with twin 3.5kW Mastervolt inverters, CZone controls the entire boat’s electrical systems. It’s this sort of systems integration that makes the Elandra an easy boat to spend time on. The living spaces only further this notion. To port of the twin Stidd helm chairs is a plush couch for keeping the captain company, while he or she gets on with the serious job of steering. But should the skipper require a snack, the galley is just steps away. Plus, when you’re done driving, the helm chairs swivel 180-degrees to meet the galley bench and create the world’s most comfortable bar stools. It would also be remiss of me at this point to gloss over the trim at the helm. Because it’s awesome. The Elandra crew chose an Ultraleather fabric dubbed ‘Pony’ to trim the Stidd chairs and dash surrounds and it’s best described as synthetic rawhide. Below decks, you begin to get a true sense of how much living space has been created within the Elandra. In the bow is the VIP, with an offset island bed that could easily serve as a master cabin. There are portlights on both sides and the mattress lifts on gas rams for easy storage beneath. The VIP shares access to the forward head with a double bunk cabin and on this debut model, there’s a washer and dryer fitted in the wardrobe of this 94

starboard side accommodation. Step down again and you reach the full-beam master, with a generous bed located on the centreline and bathroom to port. A clever ‘open vanity’ creates a spacious cabin, but with the necessary doors for privacy when required. The seashell mosaic tiles are a highlight here, as are the full-length windows on each side of this lavish space. EXPERIENCE OCEANS OF AWESOME

IN THE GARAGE Given Australia’s favourable boating climate, it’s the outdoor areas that will see the most action and here Elandra has created further memorable spaces. The extended hardtop provides shade over much of the aft deck, where there’s room for six to eight people to enjoy meals at the adjustable teak table. Tucked into the barbecue station on starboard, there’s also an icemaker, sink and bar fridge, making it simple to play host. And a pair of glass cockpit gates keep the kids safe while underway, or during tender launching operations. Wait – tender? What tender? Yep, below the aft deck is a cavernous garage capable of housing a Williams 285 jetboat or similar. Not too many 60ft sports yachts offer that handy feature, let alone single-level 55 footers. It’s a real testament to the design team that they were able to provide the convenience of a tender garage and submersible swim platform – it will make life immeasurably easier for owners. Down on the swim platform, there’s a hot and cold shower, plus a stainless swimladder and the usual freshwater washdown fittings. Access to both the engineroom and lazarette lockers is through hatches on the aft deck and belowdecks you also find the emergency steering lock, ensuring the rudders can be held straight if the electric-hydraulic steering fails.

WORTH THE WAIT There’s been a lot of anticipation surrounding Elandra’s launch into the marketplace and for me, much of this related to how a new team might shake up the industry with some fresh thinking. As you can see from the photos, the results speak for themselves and any discerning buyer looking for a family-sized sedan-style yacht will certainly have to consider this newcomer. The fact such a well-conceived product was produced locally is especially commendable and while the overall impression is one of luxurious refinement, on closer inspection there’s also a myriad of tiny details that go into making the Elandra 53 greater than the sum of its parts. From features like recessed lighting under the cockpit steps, to the CZone integration, shadow lines in the cabinetry and even the clever pop-up light on the forward sunpad, this yacht simply bursts with inspired thinking from Luke Durman, Tom Barry-Cotter and Grant Senior. As a luxury powerboat, it’s clever, modern and elegant, but as a new Australian-made yacht, it’s one we can all be proud of.

ne of the latest Yankee centre consoles to grace our shores is the Mako 234CC and it’s a beast. Big? It sure is at 23ft (7.11m) and with a massive beam of 2.59m. Fast? Well loaded with the latest twin 150hp Mercury four-strokes it has to be pretty quick on the water. Loud? Well, quite possibly from the screaming when you are having a blast driving this thing. It’s all of 23-foot and more and with a beefy bow and shoulders, it comes across as a big piece of centre console and most certainly looks the part for some serious offshore fishing. The layout is configured in true American centre console sportsfishing style, automatically appealing to not only serious fisherman but families and non-fishos alike. It’s an attractive looking boat at first glance, enough to draw you in for a detailed look.

CLASS ACT Overall finishes are really outstanding on this boat and something you notice straight away. As a dedicated offshore fishing weapon, the stern is set-up to suit gamefishing – having a livebait well/ 100

storage hatch on the starboard aft-quarter and heaps of game trolling rodholders spread out along the coamings. I like the fact that the false transom has been kept narrow but still has a flush-mounted rear lounger built-in. There’s even a retractable freshwater shower hose and a nifty little leader line box. Like most US boats the deck is fully self-draining with a lightly textured non-slip that’s not hard on bare feet, and coloured in an off-white, maintains coolness. Being a larger boat they have also managed to fit in dual flush-mount killtanks, not ultra-deep but long and good enough to lay a few big mackerel into. Unlike similar centre consoles the Mako maintains a good consistent height along the full length of the gunwales. Below the coamings they also have recessed rod racks which I like for travel purposes. Up front the bow suits a bit of family boating with dual side-seating and plenty of storage space below, a nice, deep deck hatch, drinkholders and recessed full-length grabrails. Because of the beam it’s actually a nice usable area for relaxing and even fishing. EXPERIENCE OCEANS OF AWESOME

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT The 234CC is built to take as many as 11 and does it comfortably with padding all-round; The ride is exceptional and the power from the twin 150hp Mercury’s are a good fit; storage is a highlight throughout; Mako’s quality is seen throughout including well presented rasied lettering.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP Built for fishing, the 234CC is equally at home at rest as underway thanks to great stability; The console is massive and holds everything you need; The fixed hardtop can take optional clears to increase shelter; Pressurised live well is a work of art and will keep live bait healthy for long periods.

The console - another part of the boat that’s cosmetically beautiful but just as practical to use. Due to the wide beam it provides plenty of space for mounting gear and large electronics without it looking crammed. Another good feature is the inbuilt head or toilet suited to family boating. As well as having the flushable toilet, it’s also the hub for one of the better electrical wiring systems I’ve seen for a while. There’s full access to the rear of the electronics, as well as the dual-battery setup with isolators and fuses. Protecting the console is a good-looking hardtop with a stylish anodised aluminium frame, above-head storage, and quality Taco outriggers. A neat feature was the customised clears that can be fitted to the T-top frame. It takes two minutes to rig and they really do work exceptionally well. The console seating consists of a removable Esky seat in front and comfortable dual seating at the helm positioned to suit both stand-up and seated driving. I like the way the bolster or seat cushion rolls over the edge and extends farther down to serve as a bum or lower back rest when standing and driving. Incorporated into the seating is a moulded base with tackle drawers built-in and an awesome-sized plumbed livewell with rodholders behind. The Mako’s layout is entirely practical with good ergonomics, as well as being neat and classy in looks

– especially considering that it’s only a 23-footer. Even the hatch and door lids are gas-strut assisted to make opening easier and to prevent slamming.

30FT PERFORMANCE I’ve come across centre consoles that look really good and have all the bells and whistles loaded into them but unfortunately, you rarely get the complete package – looks, layout and performance – bundled together. Well in this case, it’s not so. The Mako 234 had no issues in pumping up my impressed levels again. At just over 7m it’s neither large nor small when it comes to centre consoles – it’s probably a really decent in-between size, considering the space on board, the layout and towability with a standard four-wheel drive rated to 3.5 tonnes. The new 150hp Mercury four-strokes fitted to the 234CC are proving to be quite something. They are light weighing in at a mere 206kg (dry), as well as boasting excellent vibration management through a focused mount system, better sound management through the special idle exhaust relief system, a decent 60amp/756 Watt belt-driven alternator, and many more top features to give you some top-class performance on the water. Being twins you can set them up on a single or twin hydraulic drive system. In this case they had the twin

rams on the motors, which is by far the better option as the torque from the twins is quite something and would put serious stress on a single hydraulic ram. Twin motors versus single? Well that’s always a debatable one as they both have their pros and cons. I like the fact that if twins are correctly matched to the boat, you don’t punish the motors as hard as a single. When it comes to power a correctly matched set of twins is definitely going to give you the edge, both low down and at the top end. I also prefer them as you can set twins on different trim settings to adjust the list on a boat, working like trim tabs, although this boat did have a set of tabs installed as well. When knocking the hammers down the Merc 150s’ low-down torque fires the Mako 234CC out of the hole with ease and literally hurtles the boat to its top end with no effort at all. The more time I spend blasting these 150’s around, the more I like them. As the solidly built monohull gets up to speed, it’s not hard to notice that it has an awesome ride to it. Heading offshore, the northeasterly wind pushing into a fair southeast swell was the ideal test to see if this boat was everything I had expected it to be. It was. The offshore ride is stable, really soft, and that even when acting like an idiot on the throttles at high speed. It maintains a dry ride with spray deflecting nicely off the big flared bow, strakes and outer chines. The harder you drive it the better it just seems to go. Setup as it is the Mako 234CC is smooth, comfortable and easy to drive at both low and high speeds and definitely feels closer to the comfortable ride found on similar boats of 30ft in length.

FACTS & FIGURES

THE WRAP As far as tests go this was one of my highlights for the year. The layout impressed me, the performance and ride impressed me even more and for a 23-foot centre console around $150,000, it’s a boat that’s most definitely loaded with wow factor. If budget is a bit of an issue there are other options which allow you to still get into one of these at a reasonable price of around $110,000, including fitting a single motor rather than twins. This would knock around $20,000 to $30,000 off the price, with less service maintenance required. Besides being a versatile offshore boat suited to offshore fishing, the Mako has quite a few small creature comforts included to suit family boating as well. Nice seating options, added protection around the console, stereo, toilet/head for the ladies, and a really nice cosmetic finish that looks stylish on and off the water.
