Executive Notes WELCOME TO SCIBS
Welcome to the 2017 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show!
W
e are thrilled to welcome you to Sanctuary Cove as we set sail on the 29th edition of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS). This year we are pleased to announce that we have nearly 300 exhibitors displaying hundreds of boats and thousands of marine brands across four days of boating fun. With close to 100 new products being launched – from Queensland debut’s to world releases - we are confident you will experience the very latest in marine innovation during your visit. Whether it’s your first time here or you are a regular, we have gone to great lengths to ensure your experience is enjoyable. We have added more space to the show, expanding the layout to allow for even more boats on both land and on the Marina. The all-new dedicated trailer boat precinct Parkway North will be located adjacent to the Pavilions, which have also been extended to accommodate for an increase in our gear & gadgets exhibitors. A non-stop entertainment schedule is sure to captivate the whole family from the moment you arrive to the time you leave. With street performers, musicians, cooking demonstrations, a kids’ zone, and nautical-themed workshops; guests can further immerse themselves in the action with a ticket to the exclusive Top Deck VIP Lounge, or as a participant in the Shimano Live Bream Shootout.
12
This year we have also streamlined our transportation options to ensure access to the show is even easier – whether by land, sea or air! For visitors coming by car, we have improved our onsite parking, making more spaces available for prepurchase. For those looking for a simple, free option, our Park & Ride facility will operate out of Movie World, with regular shuttles running to and from the Boat Shows main entrance. Delivering more than just fun, we are proud to say that the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show injects over $148 million into the Gold Coast’s economy each year. As an integral part of the boating community, SCIBS attracts an audience of more than 40,000 local, national & international visitors and is endorsed by Tourism & Events Queensland. But we certainly don’t deliver this on our own! Thanks to the invaluable support from Mulpha Australia Limited, together with major sponsor Bentley Brisbane, Gold Coast City Council, Queensland Government, InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort, exhibitors, countless partners and visitors, we are able to continuously work to provide you with a world-class experience and ensure that SCIBS remains the southern hemisphere’s premier boating festival. From the entire SCIBS team, we wish our exhibitors every success. To each and every visitor – enjoy the Show!

elcome to the 29th annual Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show – a worldrenowned and industry-leading event for marine and lifestyle products. The Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is a much-anticipated event on the south-east Queensland calendar, attended by 40,000 people each year. Over four days in May 2017, visitors will be treated to a spectacular program, including cruises, educational seminars and non-stop entertainment. In 2017, the event will play host to 300 exhibitors showcasing the most innovative and exciting marine leisure craft and technology from across the globe. Held at the stunning Sanctuary Cove Resort, the show delivers a significant boost for Gold Coast tourism and the local economy. The Queensland Government remains committed to the growth and development of the superyacht industry in Queensland and has again supported the International Business Lounge at this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. I wish the organisers, exhibitors and all our local and international visitors a relaxing and informative experience and hope you enjoy all the Gold Coast has to offer.
T
he Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) is a shining light on our city’s annual events calendar. It gives families, recreational boaties and high-end enthusiasts an insight into the incredible advances the marine industry is making – from research and development to navigational technology, boat design and engineering. We should feel proud of our local marine industry, which is setting new standards nationally and internationally. SCIBS is a platform for the experts to network and do business on an international stage. SCIBS remains top of the list as thousands of interstaters and overseas guests make the journey to Sanctuary Cove each year. Last year, the show welcomed around 40,000 visitors and delivered an economic impact of $150 million for the city. What impresses me is the organisers’ ability to continually renew the program, providing open-air exhibits, fast cars, product testing, exceptional food and entertainment, and an array of competitions. The show is set against the spectacular backdrop of The Marine Village and Sanctuary Cove Marina. While you’re visiting, take some time to explore the rest of what the Gold Coast has to offer. I’ll see you there.

alking up to Pacific Belle, the hull lines immediately convey offshore purpose. Unlike many imported boats, Maritimo hulls are penned with rough water capability in mind. Walk a marina to gaze on the M70’s profile and the raised bow and tall side decks express ability; the look is purposeful as if waiting for adventure – exactly as a motoryacht should be. The way the raised bow flows to the cabin sides and is matched in upturn details towards the rear creates a feeling of movement and purpose. But while tall, the lack of a radar arch keep the look sleek, the salon windscreen helping break up the height further.
FRANK The owner generously allowed us aboard for a test between handover and the vessel’s departure for the wonders of tropical Fiji where Pacific Belle will play host to family and friends. Having previously owned a Meridian 44, Frank began the hunt for more comfort, power and prestige with a company willing to work directly to fulfil his dream. In stepped Maritimo, through its Hope Island sales office, with a new M58. The move up the range to the M70 was primarily to satisfy the need for more guest accommodation, and work began shortly after handover of the M58. The team at Hope Harbour worked with Frank over a six-month period to create the specifications, including an initial bright orange paint scheme reflecting Frank’s proud Dutch heritage. Both Maritimo sales and marketing manager Greg Haines and Hope Harbour sales exec Spence were tight-lipped on who led the change in tack from orange to blue, though I heard Spence and Frank had found an image of an overseas vessel that inspired the subtler hue.
MOTIVATION Frank is clearly a motoring enthusiast. One look at the immaculate engine room and the standouts are the brightly coloured engine blocks and chrome accents. As with all Maritimo products, the engine room is spacious and well laid-out. A particular positive is easy access to sea strainers, fuel valves, circuit breakers and engine service points. This reflects the true offshore nature of the product, as access while miles offshore can be a matter of survival. The choice of Scania powerplants – each 1150hp and displacing 16.4 litres – was partly down to performance, being near the hull’s maximum power rating, but also on account of their long service 36

intervals and cruising economy. Having cruised aboard an M65 running 1150hp CATs, I found the Scanias noticeably smoother and quieter. The engine room also reflects Maritimo’s focus on self-driven long-range cruising with generous headroom of approximately 1.8m, bright lighting including emergency systems, and large well-positioned labels for key switches, valves and gauges. It is an engine room fitting for a practical boater, with ease of access and safety in mind. Driving the M70 is a fuss-free affair. The gauges are well placed and easily read, while the digital throttles are smooth though a little light between neutral and engagement. Power delivery from the twin 1150hp Scanias is similarly smooth, with very little lurch as revs and turbo pressures rise to deliver full power at 2200rpm. The engines are exceptionally well insulated, the optional privacy door isolating the salon from the bridge further softening their deep

Stable Accommodation Maritimo offers the option of Seakeeper stabilisers in all models from the M48 up and having experienced them in motoryachts from 50ft to a steelhulled trawler conversion, it would be the first option I selected. Seakeeper works via centrifugal force applied by a high-speed flywheel inside a sealed vacuum. The flywheel is spun as fast as 10,700rpm, creating angular momentum in a horizontal plane. Think of it as a large and heavy spinning top – the high-speed spin maintains the top’s level attitude. But in the case of the Seakeeper 16, the 10,700rpm of the weighted flywheel creates tons of force that is leveraged by hydraulic rams to work against the roll of the hull. The flywheel wants to stay level, so when the hull rocks or rolls the flywheel exerts a force in the opposite direction, reducing movement. Aboard the M70, the 16 took a few minutes to build speed but once there it worked flawlessly. We tried the M70 at rest and at cruise across the incoming swell outside the Gold Coast Broadwater and with the 16 engaged, the attitude of the hull felt like a larger and much heavier vessel. Disengaged, the difference was instantly noticeable. Although roll wasn’t uncomfortable in the M70, the added confidence and solidity the 16 provided makes the Seakeeper a must-have for any large offshore hull.

rumble. If peace and quiet appeal, when optioning you motor yacht select the privacy door – it does wonders. Pushing the M70 out through a wide tidal set rolling into the heads, the on-water weight of approximately 48,000kg made itself apparent with the bow pushing deep into the 2-3m waves before lifting steadily with very little spray. Testament to the craftsmanship at the factory, it feels bigger and more capable than the near 71-foot size suggests. The all-GRP hull never groaned or flexed; it moved as one, tight as a much smaller boat. Inside the seclusion of the broadwater, at a fast 18kt cruise, we saw only 200L/h combined fuel burn, a surprisingly good result bearing testament both to the efforts of Scania and the design efficiency of the slippery shaft-driven hull. Opening the throttle out to an indicated 100 per cent load gave us just shy of 30kt at 2300rpm. The hull had just been cleaned but the engines were still in break-in hours, so I feel confident 30kt will

be a reality for Pacific Belle once the Scanias have loosened a touch. Impressively, at full flight fuel consumption only jumped to 400L/h, a surprisingly low figure for a 48-ton flybridge. Slowing the pace and relaxing the hull back into the water, economy jumped to 15L/h at 7kt. With the optional 2000L fuel tank added here, the total 8300-litre capacity makes a 3800nm trip viable, putting the whole Pacific in reach from mainland Australia. With planning, Pacific Belle has global reach.
LAYOUT The M70 features a four-cabin layout as standard, with a central full-beam master, large VIP with en suite, plus double and separate-bunk cabins sharing a generously sized bathroom. The master features an exquisite full beam en suite between the master and engine room that’s beautifully bright thanks to extensive white tiling and port holes to port and starboard. Fittings are high quality and customers are encouraged to choose benches, tapware and finishes. A bidet is standard, as are a pair of shower heads and a waterjet massager in the oversized shower. Headroom throughout was impressive, more than accommodating my two-metre frame. Robes are oversized and full length, while the master features a discreet entertainment system and large monitor. To port lies a compact yet fully functional office, and under the entrance stairs there’s storage ready to take additional refrigeration, wine storage or even a humidor should the owner wish. Guest cabins continue the luxurious feel and attention to detail of the master, also featuring full-length robes, ample storage and bright natural light. The bunk room can be configured as more office space or, as a gym. In the salon, Frank has optioned Maritimo’s premium timber package – Wenge – a rich, vibrant dark wood that features regular but uniform inclusions. It is striking up close and distinctly modern, 39

and holds the attention. Cabinetry is painstakingly constructed on site with quality control the highest priority. The high-gloss finish is the result of nine polished layers of varnish. Reflecting the entertaining angle behind Frank’s purchase of the M70, there’s additional refrigeration in the galley, a separate wine fridge, a full-size dishwasher and additional full-size Miele oven, along with one of the most spacious pantries I’ve seen. With 1400 litres of fresh water storage, the 130L/h watermaker is unlikely to have a hard life, even with freshwater outlets at the bow, stern platform and throughout internally. While you’re relaxing and enjoying the fruits of the impressive galley, the lounge offers a hideaway TV that stows under the internal stairwell. The lounges are soft leather and hold yet more storage while a beautifully crafted table with nautical-themed inlays and customer-specified heavy-duty looped wool carpet round out one of the more impressive salons on sale right now. For entertaining, a quality four-zone Bose hi-fi system 40
is plumbed throughout, offering the ability to play different music at different levels, meaning kids’ zones or quiet areas can easily be managed. Outside, the rear lounge invites passengers to relax on a settee that’s covered by an extended bimini stoutly framed in stainless and flanked by gates to the outstanding portfino. The transom hides a teppanyaki plate, freezer and sink complete with hot and cold water. Central is access to the lazarette housing the watermaker, water toy storage and, in Pacific Belle’s case, the optional additional fuel tank and Seakeeper 16. The area also features optional air conditioning which is recommended in warmer climates to help counter moisture issues. As standard the rear swim platform features a central foldout stairwell that makes egress from the water much easier, though our boat featured the optional hydraulic platform. Able to be submerged or raised just above the water, it makes water toys easier to use and provides a great spot for young families to play in the water.

Powerful Statement
The Scania DI16 V8 has its roots in heavy vehicles and was first marinised in 2015. At 16.4 litres it features wet cylinder liners and individual cylinder heads with four valves each, making major servicing easier and more affordable. A service interval of 500 hours is one of the longest and I’m told they’re relatively cheap compared with rival brands’ equivalent motors. Power ratings run from 550hp to the gargantuan 1150hp here, and all feature direct injection. The DI16-076M is also IMO Tier II and EU Stage IIIA emissions compliant. Impressively, the engine is rated above 1000hp at only 1800rpm while at the same rpm and a 25 per cent load is claimed to consume only 200L/h – impressive for the power.

Upstairs, the flybridge is a mix of the latest technology, expansive views and yet more room to relax. This bridge is to be used as overflow accommodation and has lounges that convert to beds. The buffet bar has been optioned to include a second refrigerator, while out on the balcony Frank’s touches show again. He suggested an update to the inbuilt corner seating so the two closest to the bi-folding rear door face back, reclined. They now form a great place to unwind while watching the bubble trail behind. At the helm, a Simrad electronics package resides in the air-conditioned dash – the A/C cools not only the bridge but also the navigation systems. So much processing power creates a lot of heat so cooling helps keep things reliable. The helm and first-mates chairs are wonderfully comfortable, as they should be with ocean-going vessels. Adjustable for height, reach and recline, they’re sumptuous and sturdy. The only obvious omission from the helm is the Twindisc EJS (electronic joystick system). Although a popular option, Frank prefers a remote joystick for docking. This allows him to be anywhere on the boat, even on the dock (though that’s not recommended) to control the boat’s screws and thruster 42

remotely, and really makes setting lines a breeze. One of Maritimo’s five pillars is wide, safe walkarounds. The M70’s are wide enough to walk without turning into or away from the cabin sides. They’re well lit, and the thick stainless rails add security at hand. At the bow proper, a Nautilus DLX13 tender hides under protective canvas. It features a 50hp outboard and a suite of Simrad electronics, making it more capable than most and likely to take Frank’s sons on fishing trips. A hydraulic davit takes the work out of launching and retrievals, and fender lockers and access to the anchor winch, including fresh and saltwater wash-down systems, round out the area.
THE WRAP The M70 is an extension of what Maritimo is most famous for – a customer-centric approach to building offshore-capable luxury vessels. One of the largest in the fleet, it combines a clever yet traditional hull design with contemporary thinking and technologies. The company’s use of exquisite finishes and partnerships with Seakeeper and Scania have combined to create a locally crafted vessel that will more than compete on a global level.

Stable Life DESIGNED by Quick Italy and launched in January 2017, the all-new MC2 Gyro is set to shake up the stabiliser market. Having its Australian premiere through local agent Gineico Marine, the new offering promises more affordable and easily installed stabilisation for vessels displacing 5000kg and more. The patented system eschews the common horizontal spinning mass that requires complex and costly-to-maintain hydraulics. By using a vertical flywheel, the units are more compact, affordable and require fewer expensive components like water-cooled bearings. The compact yet simple design makes these ideal to retrofit to older vessels as well as to incorporate in new builds. With up to 85 per cent roll reduction even at zero boat speed, the MC2 has the ability to increase on-water comfort and confidence, and comes complete with a two-year warranty. Selden is known for high-grip, lightweight and reliable winches. Contender Sailcloth is proud to display its new S series two-speed self-tailing winches at this year’s show. The S series simplifies tacking and makes the handling of a highly loaded sheet much safer and quicker. The grip on the winch drum is exceptionally efficient and combined with a unique self-tailer enables the trimmer to pull the slack out of the sheet with the line sitting in the self-tailer and with the winch handle mounted, a great advantage for the racing sailor who can pre-load the sheet into the self-tailer of the windward winch prior to tacking, then sheet home and set the trim of the jib instantly on the new tack. The cruising sailor will appreciate simpler and safer manoeuvres by not having to hold a tensioned sheet in the hand whilst trying to load it into the self-tailer and searching for the winch handle. The drum is hard-anodised aluminium with concave surfaces that provide the extraordinary grip. unreef Luxury Yachts and Vicsail are proud to premier In The Wind, the first Sunreef ever to be displayed at an Australian boat show. The Sunreef 60 Loft was built with vacuum infusion technology and lightweight composite materials drawn from the aeronautics industry. The hull and superstructure were designed with the focus on style and a streamlined profile, while the hulls use natural wave energy to achieve faster speeds. With the mast located on the flybridge, the superstructure is extra spacious and offers panoramic views. The main helm is at the flybridge, accompanied by a dining table and sun lounges giving those on board the opportunity to dine and relax as a group, with the captain. The living space includes an owner’s suite, three guest cabins and two crew cabins. The master cabin is located in the starboard hull and is furnished with a kingsize bed, a desk, private bathroom, special storage for a keyboard, plus TV and DVD equipment. There is also plenty of space to store personal belongings and luggage. The third guest cabin has bunk-beds – perfect for kids. Six wide portlights integrated in the hulls allow plenty of sunlight into the guest cabins. The main deck houses the comprehensive kitchen, living/dining area and lower helm with navigation, communication and automatic pilot systems. A 40in LCD TV/DVD with Dolby Surround system in the living-room is linked to speakers in the cockpit and on the sun deck for boat-wide

INTERNATIONAL BOATING WEEK
T
he 29th annual Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show will this year coincide with three globally significant boating conventions, attracting influential delegates from more than 25 countries to the Gold Coast. Leaders of marine industry associations and owners and managers of the leading boat shows from around the world will convene on the Gold Coast from May 24 to 27 for the annual ICOMIA & IFBSO Congress, focused on the issues concerning the global recreational boating industry. This extraordinary confluence of marine industry associations and managers of leading boat shows from around world will create a mega-marine event, hailed as ‘International Boating Week’. The Australian Superyacht and Marine Export Conference (ASMEX), May 22 to 24, is expected to involve as many as 300 delegates this year and includes the 2017 Australian Marine Industry Awards gala dinner and presentation. Held at the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort, ASMEX will lead directly into SCIBS. Coinciding with ASMEX and SCIBS is the 2017 International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) and International Federation of Boat Show Organisers (IFBSO) Congress – a fourday conference organised by the Boating Industry Association (BIA) that represents the world’s leading boat shows and assists with the development of marine trade exhibitions worldwide.
70
The combination of these four events provides a unique opportunity to share, learn, network and advance the global recreational boating industry at the epicentre of Australia’s recreational boating industry, Queensland’s Gold Coast.
SUPERYACHT & AIMEX ALLEY The Australian International Marine Export (AIMEX) Group will host the ‘Superyacht and Marine Export Alley’ in the Pantaenius Superyacht and Marine Pavilion. The Australian Commercial Marine Group (ACMG) will also have strong representation. Superyacht Australia & AIMEX hold 189 square metres of space in the Pantaenius Superyacht and Marine Pavilion and will welcome a variety of brands to the boat show where national and international members will see the best edition of the prestigious pavilion in 2017. Among the exhibitors are international Superyacht Insurance Company, Pantaenius Yacht Insurance, Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard, Dixon Asia Pacific, Austral Propellers, Hella Marine, Aqualuma LED Lighting, Mega Pulse Green Energy and Tides Marine. US aviation company Textron – who have recently joined Superyacht Australia as a corporate member – will be exhibiting for the first year. Steber International, MedAire, Crew Pacific, Superior Jetties, CE & A Co. Pty Ltd and Etiquette Marine round out the list of exhibitors in the Superyacht and Marine Export Alley.

Y
ou could be forgiven if, like me, you took one look at Jeanneau’s NC9 and NC11 motor yachts and guessed they were new offerings from Europe’s number-one pleasure craft builder. In fact the NC11 won the coveted European Powerboat Of The Year Award in 2011 but it remains as fresh and relevant today as on debut. Jeanneau quickly followed the success of the NC11 with the smaller, yet no less impressive, NC9 a year later, completing a beautiful and desirable range of cruisers from nine to 14m. Their innovative design and premium construction combine elements of traditional Nordic seafaring experience with the elegance of Mediterranean waterside terrace apartments, and while they may have European flavour and panache, they fit exceptionally well into the Australian boating market. We revisited both models at the Australian home of Jeanneau sports cruisers, Matthew Willett Marine on the central Sydney North Shore moorings in D’Albora Marina at The Spit in Mosman, to reaquaint ourselves with them. The steep tree-lined cliffs are home to some of Australia’s best waterside properties and the Jeanneaus enhance their surroundings by offering luxury sports and cruising ability on some of our finest waterways. The Spit is only a hop, skip and jump from the inner city, Darling Harbour and Manly, with the possibility of a weekend run up the coast to Pittwater or Nelson Bay, or south to Botany Bay and beyond. The NCs recognise no 74
“THE POWER, W E I G H T, T O R Q U E AND OVERALL GRUNT OF THE TWIN-ENGINE NC11 C E R TA I N LY P U T A S M I L E O N M Y D I A L” boundaries and while in Jeanneau’s book ‘NC’ stands for ‘New Concept’, good design is timeless which is precisely what makes them so appealing.
NO NONSENSE NC11 The European designers certainly hit their target with the NC11. Its stylish presentation will appeal to the most fastidious owner, and those with nautical experience will celebrate an extremely user-friendly layout. It is as appealing to service staff as to passengers and crew. She has terrific ‘flow’ throughout, whether from the outer decks and bow or the convertible cockpit and boarding platform, through the wide-opening saloon doors that bring the inside out and the outside in. It then carries on to a versatile cabin and helm, before finally heading downstairs where you’ll find the twin staterooms and bathroom.

JEANNEAU NC9 & NC11
I find many European minimalist finishes lacking in quality and detail, often using the excuse that fashion defies practicality. Not Jeanneau! This is a well thought-out boat with attractive yet sensible materials and finishes, and a rather unique layout that is full of innovative surprises. She lures you with a warm and comfortable atmosphere that, while certainly compact, has a very bright open and airy feel everywhere. There are plenty of windows, and the high headroom throughout the lounge is enhanced by a large electric Webasto sunroof over the helm. The warmth starts from the moment you board over the short but functional teak-lined (optional) stern platform. The ample Mediterranean Deck is on the same level as the platform, enhancing the external space. The gunwales are nice and high and the area is well confined once you close

the rear gates. I really liked the convertible bench seat; mounted on slides to adjust the positioning, it can be used as either a comfortable lounge or a relaxing sunbed. The cockpit floor includes generous hatch access to the engine well that houses a pair of Volvo D3-200hp diesel engines powering Duo Prop stern drives. The engine well is large, beautifully fitted and neatly plumbed, and allows easy access for regular maintenance or long-term servicing. The three-piece French-style saloon doors open wide from either direction, creating an al fresco entertainment space. Walkways either side of the cabin lead to the foredeck; to port it’s offset further than starboard, making it the preferred route. There is a further detachable sun lounge on the forward cabin roof (optional) and plenty of room to move around the short bow’s fittings and Lewmar electric anchor winch. I was particularly pleased to find a lateral sliding door at the helm on the port side. It not only provides quick access to the side decks for a singlehanded skipper but also adds to the open feeling and ventilation of the saloon. The internal layout is innovative and functional, with the individual helm to the port side and a credenza masked galley behind. It features a two-burner gas stove with grill, stainless sink with mixer tap, compressor bar fridge and optional microwave all combined in teak cabinetry with leatherette trim, storage and the switch panel up front. To starboard, the large convertible dinette not only provides a terrific table for a banquet but each of the fully upholstered leatherette seats tilts forward or back to create extra beds, as well as becoming a dual passenger seat and rear-facing lounge to accentuate the entertainment value of the cockpit. Most inventive! The helm position is really quite good considering its rather compact nature. It is suitably comfortable and allows good visibility all around from the elevated upholstered bench. Our demo unit was fitted with Volvo Penta electronic dual binnacles with the option of singlelever control, trim assist and cruise control, plus Volvo Penta digital engine readouts combined with a complete set of analogue gauges. Jeanneau offers joystick control as an option – but at $25,600 extra I wouldn’t bother. She’s a breeze to manoeuvre in and out of tight moorings with the flexibility of twin engines plus the optional bow thruster.
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP The compact galley offers everything needed for weekends away; The main cabin is bright and airy thanks to large windows; The saloon leads seamlessly to the rear lounge; Visibility is excellent throughout SANCTUARY COVE INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW 2017

There are Lenco trim tabs, VHF radio and optional Raymarine electronics, this one with an E97 12in multi-function screen. The internal presentation is quite sporty and with what Jeanneau calls a “warm contemporary ambience” from the leather-wrapped Jeanneauembossed steering wheel, Alpiwood panelling, ebony and ivory-coloured Devon leather upholstery to the white-lined ceilings enhancing both the polished fibreglass areas and moulded black surfaces. Underfloor you’ll find a pair of very large storage hatches. The space is big enough for an inflatable 78
boat along with its engine and a heap of other gear. Downstairs is inviting yet compact. The forward berth has a full island bed with wardrobe storage, while the second stateroom features an east/west double with storage to starboard. Large windows add to the ambience internally, and also boost the external appeal. The bathroom has a saltwater flushing head, plus vanity with a pull-out rose for the wet-area shower. The trim is simple, neat and stylish with a good array of drop and mood lighting found throughout. I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of both Jeanneaus but the power, weight, torque,

manoeuvrability and overall grunt of the twinengine NC11 certainly put a smile on my dial. The solid, hard-chined full fibreglass monohull is spritely out of the hole and is unexpectedly nimble for a boat of 5925kg dry. She’s just a little hard into a choppy head sea but that’s to be expected from a sports/cruising monohull combination where stability is a major factor. We took her out through Sydney Heads and into some slop where she performed with nothing but confidence right through to a quoted top speed of 30.5kt at 4000rpm, at which she was drinking 82.12L/h in optimum conditions. Drop to a more
realistic cruising speed of 25.25kt (3400rpm) and she sips a thrifty 56.72L/h.
NAUTICAL NC9 Prefer a slightly smaller boat? The NC11’s little sister, the NC9, is a practical and satisfying sports cruiser. And it’s not simply about savings. The NC9 packs all the style, grace, facility and good looks of her larger sibling in a boat 9.43 metres long overall, with 3.15 metres beam. She doesn’t really feel the considerable 590mm skinnier than the NC11’s 3.74 metres but there’s considerably less weight to push (4830kg dry

displacement) and the gutsy Volvo Penta D4-260hp four-cylinder, common-rail injected, double overhead cam, turbocharged and aftercooled diesel provides terrific performance up to a quoted optimum speed of 25.9kt at 3650rpm, drinking just 49.6L/h. Fuel consumption drops to a very comfortable 40L/h at 3200rpm, for a terrific offshore cruising speed of 21.25kt. More importantly, you can rest assured it has the power to take the family out for a day of fun and thrills, and bring ’em home safely. Whilst obviously smaller, she hasn’t lost much of the voluptuous appeal. The biggest differences are that she’s considerably shorter in the rear deck and platform, the second stateroom and bathroom are reversed; she comes standard with twin manual sunroofs (Webasto electric is an option), and Lenco trim tabs are fitted as standard, giving the operator full control no matter the wind and sea direction or load movements. This terrific Jeanneau package retains all the other features, albeit in a slightly more compact package.
CUSTOM FINISH, MODULAR CONSTRUCTION Jeanneau provides comprehensive standard specifications and the factory or MW Marine can customise a cruiser to your taste. There are choices of gelcoat colour, Alpiwood panelling, premium 80
upholstery, trim, subtle lining, hard-wearing fauxtimber floor surfaces, and blackout or Sunbrella canvas options, with colours and textures to change the demeanour from vibrant to sublime. Raymarine electronics packages are available as standard but other choices are available on demand. Similarly, there’s a wonderful selection of Fusion entertainment systems, plus TVs, air conditioning, generators, communications and navigation equipment, auxillary lighting, and storage solutions available on request. Jeanneau describes its NC series as “boats with a terrace on the sea”; I think there’s a whole heap more to admire than that.
THE JEANNEAU GIANT The NC series sports cruisers have been a massive success for Jeanneau. The larger NC14 has proven popular internationally and enjoyed good acceptance in Australia, with three delivered in Sydney and one in Melbourne. Jeanneau has now sold a massive 260 NC11s and 164 NC9s worldwide, which gives Australian customers and dealers alike total confidence in a well-accepted and well-constructed product backed by a nationwide service network. The Jeanneau giant produces a massive range of power and sailing craft, ensuring prolonged dominance and security in an often rocky marine marketplace.

Last year’s popular Supercar Street will be back in 2017, providing ‘a show within a show’ to engage the whole family. “We have designed the layout of Supercar Street with the precision that prestige marques such as Bentley, our major automotive sponsor, deserve, creating the ultimate space to see and experience these machines up close,” said sales and exhibition manager Dominic O’Brien. Supercar brands Bentley, Maserati, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, McLaren, Volvo, BMW, Porsche, Lotus and Mercedes-Benz will be adding to the high-octane attraction in the heart of The Marine Village along Quay Street.
CHILD’S PLAY Shiver me timbers! The fun for families starts the moment they arrive, with everyone’s favourite pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow, greeting visitors each morning of the Show. SCIBS’ non-stop program of entertainment and events has been crafted to ensure every member of the family has a day to remember. This world-renowned waterfront location is home to award-winning cafes and restaurants catering to all tastes, making it the ideal place to enjoy a gourmet experience or simply refuel and relax before rejoining the action at the Show. 84
A sea trial allows prospective buyers to experience the details that collectively make up a great boat. While an on-land inspection provides an excellent introduction to what is on offer, it is at sea where the magic really occurs. The Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is the ideal platform for those interested in purchasing a new boat to spend extended time on the vessel to become better acquainted with its features and decide if it is the right match. A sea trial doesn’t have to mean taking on the biggest waves around, but equally can be an important and valuable opportunity to assess the suitability of the boat in local conditions.

T
he Fleming 55 is a ‘passagemaker’. Don’t you just love that term? It conjures up images of luxury yachts cruising the Caribbean, extended sojourns through the icy waters of Alaska, losing yourself amongst an array of tropical islands and atolls, or intercontinental voyages across vast untamed oceans. Passagemakers define a nautical mindset achieved by many sea-dogs once they mature past the glitz and glamor of gizmos, gadgets and plastic fantastics. This is the real world of ocean cruising where 8-10kts is a practical speed and the ‘journey’ is the pleasure. It’s about confidence in your boat to challenge long passages, the seamanship to make the trip alluring to all, and the comfort and facility for the final destination. The Fleming 55 has all of these qualities. It was born a generation ago in the heady era of the mid-1980s. Since then there have been over 230 boats built and delivered and while the timeless design and
FLEMING 55
character has been steadfast, the boats themselves have made rapid progress in technological advances, customer service and indeed fashion. Personally, I find it hard to fully evaluate such a complex machine in a single day, yet the basics are blatantly obvious. There’s premium fittings and craftsmanship around every corner. Put simply, from the seabed up she’s a beautiful hull, with the body to match.
BUCKET LIST Richard Rains is an unlikely boat owner, and yet his beloved Fleming 55 is the fulfillment of one of his life’s dreams. He’s a country boy from Dunedoo, a small town east of Dubbo, and refers to it as “the town they left the ‘R’ off …” He’s been in the international food trade for the greater part of his life with a particular emphasis on exporting meat products; hence he’s familiar with dealing on an international level.
SANCTUARY COVE INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW 2017
89
Fleming’s foundations are multinational. Tony Fleming is an Englishman who lives in America and worked for over 20 years with American Marine and Grand Banks. In 1985 Tony left with his business partner Anton Emmerton and commissioned Californian naval architect Larry Drake to design a premium pilothouse passagemaker which evolved into the Fleming 55. They chose the Tung Hwa boat yard in southern Taiwan as their manufacturing facility, a relationship which exists until this very day. The boat’s name, Post Office, should be pronounced with a definite gap between the words ‘post’ and ‘office’, thus meaning ‘after retirement.’ Richard has retired to Sydney’s North Shore and keeps his pride and joy at the pretty inner suburban marina at Kirrabilli. The new Sydney Harbour mooring has opened up some new activities and destinations: “I can walk for a couple of minutes to the east and jump on a ferry into town, have a meal or a social drink at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron just to the west, or invite a crew down for a sunset cruise and stay comfortably on the boat due to the three large staterooms and two bathrooms. “The kids just love it, as will my new grandchild” he said proudly. “I’m still on a number of Boards and hence have regular meetings in the CBD, so the boat and its central mooring provide multi-purposes.” Richard does not aspire to any larger vessel in the future; he loves the classic style and doesn’t need to go any faster. The Fleming has the safety, the comfort, the passagemaking ability, yet can be easily handled alone.
QUALITY BUILD From the deep, fully enclosed keel to the peak of the hard top the construction is spectacular. She’s a full fibreglass laminate with twin 500hp Cummins QSC 8.3lt, six-cylinder common rail, turbocharged and after-cooled four-stroke diesels with Twin Disc MG5075A, 2.53:1 transmissions powering the shaftdrives. All up she weighs in at a considerable 36-tonnes wet with a huge 3785lt of fuel in four tanks, 1135lt of freshwater and 378lt of blackwater capacity. Fleming hasn’t stopped at mere fit-out and weight to ensure maximum comfort and efficiency. The drive system is as smooth as her classy mouldings with oversized Silent Block engine mounts and Seatorque BOSS totally enclosed, oil-filled, shaft and thrust bearing assembly that greatly reduces engine vibration. They also offer perfect engine alignment and variable angle adjustment for vibration-free power transmission. 90
The whole propulsion system is so well balanced that I could easily turn the Aqualloy 2.25in prop shafts and ZF-Faster four-blade nickel aluminum bronze propellers with one hand from the engine bay. There has been a tremendous attention to acoustics with very high quality acoustic lining and wellconsidered airflows adding to the overall construction quality, resulting in one of the quietest and most pleasant on-water experiences imaginable without going electric. One of the changes since previous testing of a Fleming a couple of years ago, is the upgrading of the hydraulically operated stabilisers to ABT-TRAC 7.5ft2 models with fins, winglets and color touchscreen

control panel. The ride is also aided by a set of Bennett trim tabs. Sydney Harbour is full of all manner of fast-moving larger vessels, including the ever-present ferry systems and hence there always seems to be a considerable wake to contend with. The Fleming remained extremely surefooted throughout all situations and leaving the Harbour to contend with the open ocean under North Head certainly didn’t change things. The surefootedness is aided considerably by these big stabilisers, commonly used on much larger vessels up to 80ft (24.3m). Stabilisers normally don’t have much influence at very low speeds yet these noticeably aid the stability right down to 5kt. This is a true passagemaker, with a very confident ride. I asked Richard of his future seagoing ambitions and he told me that he would love to take Post Office around the top of the country and over to Broome. The vessel won’t take him long to master and certainly has the capacity, with the quoted cruising range of 2000nm at 8kt. Factory testing presents very efficient fuel consumption figures of only 43L/h at 10kt, and we experienced 30L/h at 9kt on the Harbour. She has achieved the international CE Category A Ocean certification for 15 passengers offshore and 22 in enclosed waters.
LATEST ELECTRONICS On advice from Fleming, Richard chose predominantly Raymarine electronics throughout the boat including a pair of gS series touchscreen multi-function displays
both in the wheelhouse and on the flybridge. Fleming has defied many trends by choosing Boning 8.8in colour touchscreen glass displays at both upper and lower stations for real-time engine information, and Fleming Central monitoring system for the whole boat as standard equipment. The array of electronics and accessories is endless but a noteworthy option is the five-function Yacht Controller wireless remote that operates the engines fore and aft, Side-Power thrusters and windlass for very easy docking and mooring control. When it’s time to relax, the interactive Bose and Fusion sound is linked to the custom pop-up television that is located in the rear saloon cabinet. This is located near the slide-out bar, full-size upright fridge/freezer and the four separate icemakers, individually specified by Richard. “A man’s got to keep his drinks chilled,” he declares with a smile and a wink. Powering the craft is a pair of Onan generators; a 13.5kW, 60Hz Onan eQD with a 9.5kW, 50Hz in reserve. In fact almost everything on Post Office has been doubled as a failsafe. Besides the generators there are two windlasses, a back-up unit for the Hypromarine hydraulic power steering, engine and gearbox control back-ups, multiple sets of safety equipment including four EPIRBs, multiple icemakers, fuel tanks, engine controls and more. There are dual heat detectors, two engine room extraction blowers, two Gianneschi freshwater pumps, four fire-retardant FRP fuel tanks with sight gauges and so on.

Noteworthy inclusions in the fitout are the extra control station from the rear of the flybridge deck, a Reverso 24V fuel transfer/ polishing system, Sea Vision LED underwater lights, efficient LED lighting throughout and a fire suppression system with automatic engines/ genset/blowers shutdown. There are also VHF radios with AIS vessel tracking and identification, and even a Swift 3.6 Mirage tender with 40hp Yamaha four-stroke engine (Fleming Australia is also the Swift agent).
GO WITH THE FLOW From the moment you step aboard from either of the two side companionways on upper or lower decks you will immediately be delighted with the endearing flow throughout all of the individual components of the boat. To me, the flow was a highlight. I don’t recall a boat that has so many different living and working areas that are so easily and so naturally traversed. The teak trim will leave you speechless; the joinery is faultless. The stateroom size and layout is eminently comfortable and inviting, the two bathrooms, fittings, lighting and storage simply exceptional. I particularly loved the pilothouse with its vision and dash layout reminiscent of a much larger vessel. The small pilothouse dinette gives interested passengers a comfy and secure spot to join the skipper. The Portuguese bridge out front really sets the scene 94
for forward passage, and the immense foredeck could hold a large party, all confined by the security of strong and tall stainless steel rails that will even keep parents reassured over their children’s safety. I could spend many an enjoyable hour or 10 with a group of friends on the huge rear deck under the shade of the extended hardtop; or perhaps move the party upstairs for a better view and a bit more open air. The only limited space is inside the engine compartment where headroom is a bit limited, but for very good reason. Fleming has designed in a low centre of gravity to increase the safety and stability, the trade-off for which is limited clearance. While you may have to duck a bit, once inside you’ll quickly forget the inconvenience as you notice the quality installation of all of the componentry, including engines, generators, fuel systems, and all the colour-coded electrical circuits and general plumbing. It’s little wonder this Fleming 55 has been in production for nearly 30 years and is still popular, elegant, attractive and perhaps even more relevant than ever. When I recently asked a retired friend how he was keeping busy, he said: “There’s not a rule that says you have to go to the bank and the post office on the same day!” If Post Office were mine I wouldn’t be visiting a bank too often either – they’d be much too far away!
