elcome to the 30th anniversary edition of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) and sharing in this significant milestone within the Australian and international marine industry. From its inception in 1989, SCIBS has evolved from the first on-water boat show in Queensland to the southern hemisphere’s premier marine event. Over the past 30 years, we have welcomed more than 1.4 million visitors to The Marine Village, hosted upwards of 10,000 exhibitors, injected more than $3 billion into the Gold Coast economy and have provided a global stage for countless international, Australian and Queensland marine launches. With a buoyant market, hundreds of boats including 180-plus on water, countless world launches, new product segments and thousands of marine products on display – SCIBS 2018 is gearing up to be a bumper anniversary edition. In 2018, we have expanded exhibition space across the Marina and pavilions, as well as added an exciting new segment to

the Show – being our ‘Sports, Leisure and Fishing Boats’ precinct. Staying true to our reputation of being the place ‘where the marine business does business’, we welcome leaders and attendees to the Australian Superyacht and Marine Export Conference (ASMEX) in the lead up to SCIBS. We have also launched a new addition to the program in our Industry Trade Breakfast taking place on Friday 25th May, hosted by special guest keynote speaker Mark Richards, CEO of Grand Banks, founder of Palm Beach Motor Yachts and legendary skipper of Wild Oats XI. Also complementing the Show’s business offering is the return of our popular International Business Lounge and Top Deck VIP Lounge, once again opening its doors to marine movers and shakers. Not just for the boating enthusiast, SCIBS will feature an entertainment program across four action-packed days – with its dedicated Kids’ Zone, roving street performers, live music, food offerings, cooking demonstrations and nautical workshops ensuring there is something for the family.

22

Getting to this year’s Boat Show is easy with the free Park n’ Ride service that offers a complimentary shuttle from Warner Bros. Movie World. MESSAGE FROM THE

Mayor of gold coasT

T

he 2018 Commonwealth Games was much more than a world-class sporting event for our city. It elevated the Gold Coast’s status as a dynamic events city, with the facilities, expertise and enthusiasm to match. To me, hosting the Games was always about seeking legacy opportunities post GC2018. I want our city to be a serious player on the international stage for a range of events, whether they are in sport, arts, culture, marine or music. The Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) celebrates 30 years this year. Organisers, sponsors and exhibitors can feel incredibly proud of the growth of the show, from humble beginnings to the marine and lifestyle mecca it is today. It is events like this that showcase our city as a fantastic lifestyle destination; as a marine manufacturing and service hub; and as a place to enjoy everything there is about boating. The show gives families, recreational boaties and high end enthusiasts an insight into the incredible advances the marine industry is making – from research and development to navigational technology, boat design and engineering. Boating enthusiasts throughout Asia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates and America pencil in the date of the show each year, to ensure they make it to Sanctuary Cove. For exhibitors, it is a chance to network and do business on an international stage. Nationally, SCIBS remains number one when it comes to boat shows – and I’m sure organisers plan to keep it that way. Last year, the Show welcomed around 42,000 visitors and delivered an economic impact of more than $150 million for the city. It really is the place to be. While you’re visiting, take time to explore the rest of what the Gold Coast has to offer. I’ll see you there.

Premier of QueenslanD

W

elcome to the 30th annual Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and welcome to the Gold Coast, where last month 6600 athletes from 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth competed for gold, and a global audience of 1.5 billion cheered them on. I am delighted to now welcome more than 40,000 visitors, including international guests, who are here to see the latest boating technology and engineering, whether for their yacht or dinghy. As the original on-water boat show in Queensland, the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show continues to set industry standards. What started as a show with 100 exhibitors in 1989 has evolved into a showcase of more than 300 globally-sourced exhibitors, making it the largest in the Asia-Pacific region. Many original exhibitors continue to have a presence 30 years on, and I thank everyone involved for making a valuable contribution to our local economy. I wish you an enjoyable four days taking in the relaxing atmosphere and innovative technology at this year’s event.

Although not on display at SCIBS, Horizons FD85 is creating waves offshore and has the local office excited about the luxurious performer. Whether it’s for her striking exterior appearance, efficient layout and contemporary design, or for her superior seakeeping performance; hull three of Horizon’s new FD85 series sure generated some chatter on the docks when she made her U.S. debut late last year at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The first of Horizon’s new FD series to make an appearance in the U.S., hull three is equipped for the American market. The result of a close collaboration between worldrenowned yacht designer Cor D. Rover and Horizon’s in-house naval architecture team; the 85-foot advanced fast displacement motoryacht features superior cruising capabilities that complement living and entertaining spaces comparable to 100-footplus megayachts. Notable for its unique exterior styling that maximises the use of glass; large windows throughout bring copious amounts of natural light into the interior to further enhance the indoor/outdoor feeling. Hull three features a contemporary-styled interior that emphasises light woods, mixed materials and unique textures and design elements – such as the ceramic wall accent in the main dining room – that create visual interest. The choice of a light wood colour palette

further enhances the open layout and natural light from the large windows. Darker walnut flooring in a herringbone pattern anchors the space while large portions of wood throughout showcase Horizon’s woodworking and joinery-work expertise. A blend of mid-century modern and contemporary furnishings with neutral soft goods and pops of blues and teals, create a luxurious but relaxed atmosphere. Hull three maintains the efficient standard layout of its predecessor that includes four ensuite staterooms on the lower deck and a large on-deck master, an expansive main saloon with formal dining forward, and an

open flybridge and spacious aft deck. The exterior spaces exude a resort-like appeal, characterised by contemporary outdoor furnishings and enhanced LED lighting. The open flybridge features a retractable sunroof, helm station, L-shaped settee, barbecue grill and a wet bar with four stools and a 46-inch fold-down television, as well as a Jacuzzi tub. The spacious aft deck seats 10-12 people, and twin staircases to port and starboard simplify access to and from the flybridge. Below the waterline, the FD85 delivers superior seakeeping and performance, with twin CAT C32s of 1600hp each.

T

hirty years is a monumental achievement in any business, and as an event that truly reflects the ebb and flow of the industry it serves, the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is pleased and proud to be sharing this major milestone with three generations of exhibitors, partners, suppliers and an enthusiastic boating public. ‘SCIBS’ as it’s known, has evolved over three decades to grow from an assortment of boats on the Marina and a legendary launch, to become a well-oiled machine showcasing every aspect of the boating lifestyle, plus a program of entertainment and education that is inclusive and inspiring. As Queensland’s first on-water boat show in 1989, SCIBS has evolved from humble beginnings to become the southern hemisphere’s premier marine event with hundreds of boats and thousands of marine products on display in one spectacular location. Over the course of its history, SCIBS has hosted more than 10,000 exhibitors and welcomed 1.4 million-plus visitors through its gates, resulting in a total economic impact of more than $3 billion. General manager Johan Hasser said the team was thrilled to be hosting one of its largest boat shows in 2018, buoyed by the spirit of exhibitors who have upped the ante for the landmark 30th year. “Thirty years is a milestone we are proud and excited to share with our exhibitors, sponsors and supporters across the industry,” said Mr Hasser. “From 100-plus exhibitors in 1989, to the world-class showcase it is today with more

than 300 quality exhibitors and thousands of visitors from Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and the rest of the world, it’s fair to say we’ve come a long way.” SCIBS has grown to become one of the most important B2B events on the Australian boating calendar, hosting international delegations from every continent in the wake of the ASMEX conference and thanks to the support of the Gold Coast City Council and the Queensland Government. “Many people tell us they plan to travel down under to experience SCIBS and see for themselves the ingenuity and innovation the Australian marine industry is renowned for,” he said. Celebrating 30 years alongside SCIBS is a loyal band of exhibitors who took a punt on a promotional concept, executed by the original Boat Show crew – the dynamic trio of Barry Jenkins, Harry Davis and his wife, Marilyn – all of whom have a long association with the event. Barry Jenkins, to this day known as ‘Mr Boat Show’, remains actively involved as the charismatic ambassador for SCIBS and in his role with AIMEX-Superyacht Australia. “Thanks to the input of its exhibitors SCIBS is as relevant today as it ever was, as it is extremely responsive to industry and works in close collaboration with associations and exhibitors to deliver the best platform possible for businesses and brands to meet boaties and people keen to enter the boating lifestyle,” Mr Jenkins said. “We have always strived to meet the requirements of the exhibitors, with their business aims at the forefront. This is a

marketing exercise and they must get return on investment. The Boat Show team and Mulpha are focused on facilitating whatever needed to be done for the best outcomes for industry, because the reverberations from that benefit the exhibitor. “Our role is to provide a dynamic platform to attract a broad range of consumers who will respond to what the industry is placing before them – from surfboards to superyachts and everything in between.” Mr Jenkins said the 2018 edition is certain to be a memorable year for organisers, exhibitors and visitors. “I remember one year the general manager of the British Marine Federation visiting the Show and standing in the middle of  The Promenade saying, ‘you are so lucky to have this facility to work with, it has to be the best venue in the world!’ and I have never

forgotten that compliment,” he said. “I’m looking forward to welcoming back many exhibitors who have supported the Show for years – some for 30, some for 20, some for 10 – and the companies and individuals who will join us for the first time. “As well as shaping up to be one of the biggest and best shows for many years, SCIBS 2018 promises to be a walk down memory lane as people who have worked on the Show, that have helped to make it the success it is, return to have a look and celebrate 30 wonderful years with us. “We are thrilled that our exhibitors, sponsors and partners are getting behind SCIBS and putting considerable effort and resources into the Show. The economic climate and consumer confidence are favourable and all indicators are pointing towards a bumper Show!”

Boating industry legend and founder of Maritimo Bill Barry-Cotter was among the first exhibitors at the inaugural Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in 1989 and remains one of the Show’s strongest supporters. “We have been involved from the outset and I believe it is the best boat show when you consider all its elements, including the location and all that Sanctuary Cove has to offer visitors,” Mr Barry-Cotter said. “It has become very professional and obviously larger over the number of years Maritimo has been exhibiting. “It’s an open market for people who are looking for a large luxury cruiser or some fishing gear for their tinny.” Northside Marine’s dealer principal Greg Nickerson, is a 29-year veteran of SCIBS and said he was thrilled to be a part of the

30th anniversary of such an iconic event. “We have been established for 52 years in Brisbane, so SCIBS has been a vital showcase for us and the brands we represent exclusively in Queensland, such as Whittley, Surtees and Stabicraft to reach our Gold Coast customers,” Mr Nickerson said. “SCIBS has evolved as the marine industry has evolved, catering to our changing needs and always supporting Northside Marine to enable us to put on our best presentation each year.” Mr Nickerson said what sets SCIBS apart from other major Australian boat shows was The Marine Village’s vibrant atmosphere, a diverse and innovative product offering, and family entertainment. “It’s a great venue for exhibitors and visitors. The pristine Marina, together with The Marine Village, creates a unique environment that cannot be replicated by any other venue,” he said. “Now, more than ever, a good mix of trailerable boats and the big boats, is important for promoting the boating lifestyle and making it accessible to everybody.” Superior Jetties CEO John Hogan is another foundation SCIBS exhibitor and will also be celebrating 30 years in operation next year, having carved out a global reputation for floating solutions for marina construction, floating pontoons, jet ski docks and boat lifts. Mr Hogan said across the past three decades, SCIBS had grown in stature and importance to the boating and broader marine industries. “It has grown to have more lifestyle impact with cars, leisure products, food and boutique shopping all playing a part of The

Marine Village atmosphere that makes it one of the world’s great boat shows,” Mr Hogan said. “SCIBS has a strong international reputation, which has allowed us to show our wares to potential export clients on the water.” For Superior Jetties, SCIBS represents the best opportunity to “meet customers faceto-face”. “SCIBS is a great chance to not just sell, but gain feedback, advice, mentor, market survey, price check and generally see an active marketplace in action in real time,” Mr Hogan said. Dean and Ryan Leigh-Smith are third generation boaties, who have grown up with Sanctuary Cove as their “backyard” their entire lives. SCIBS holds a special place in their hearts, and now their business calls the Sanctuary Cove Marina home. “The Show has been a continual evolution since its first edition that the Leigh-Smith family was involved in all those years ago,” Dean Leigh-Smith said. “What started as primarily a promotional event to bring people to Sanctuary Cove, has evolved into an amazing event that covers every level and facet of the marine industry.” For the Leigh-Smiths, Sanctuary Cove is the ideal venue to showcase the enviable benefits of the boating lifestyle. “You’ll often hear me referring to

Sanctuary Cove as a ‘year-round Boat Show’, with brands like Fairline, Alaska, Hampton, Horizon, Maritimo, Integrity, Catalina and more all based here,” Mr Leigh-Smith said. “Over four massive days, it’s a shorter show by comparison to others, but that adds to its appeal: four days, sensible hours and the opportunity to meet industry colleagues, friends and clients after hours and enjoy the Village atmosphere, the dining, boutiques, homewares and beautiful waterfront views.”

TemptresS Maritimo’s new M59 cruising motor yacht is sweetly seductive – ‘nautical eye candy’.

SPEAKS VOLUMES

Stepping onto the M59, even in my somewhat bleary state due to the early hour, the first thing I immediately noticed was the exceptionally wide beam giving the package enormous volume and the following amenity. Its beam is 5.46m (17ft 11in for us old hacks) which is a good 300-400mm wider than many comparable hulls. It certainly enriches the feeling of space, security and stability. This is a great looking boat in anyone’s eyes; in fact it’s more like nautical eye candy to me. Maritimo describe it as, “sporting a dynamic profile with a powerful and athletic stance”. It features a big proud brow with beautiful entry and a curvaceous sheerline, with a step in the gunwales leading graciously to the cockpit coamings. The large foredeck is flat and very workable, whether you opt for sun pads for the mermaids or perhaps a davit and tender. Maritimo has ensured that the ceiling hatches in the cabin are spread either side of the central line to facilitate these deck options. The walkways around the cabin are wide and easily traversed as well as being well enclosed by the extended bow rail for both safety at sea plus retaining the littluns.

59

M

aritimo has once again stamped its exemplary brand on one of the world’s leading motor yachts – the new M59. Whilst the model was revealed to Australasia during last year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, the curtains were unfurled internationally at the prestigious Miami Show in February. The M59 and its sporty sistership, the S59 sedan cruiser, both debuted in Australia at SCIBS with a glowing reception. Maritimo has blended the world of chic luxury and nautical practicality in the enticing, wide-bodied M59 temptress. Let’s face it the M59 is a cruising yacht with its extended flybridge, hydraulic rear platform and rear lounge. It’s not a dedicated sports fisher but what better way to test a rig than to spend a day at sea under the guise of chasing marlin. Hence four stainless steel rod holders were quickly fitted to the coamings pre-empting a 4.30am start to our ‘boat test’ leaving the Maritimo Service and Ship Yard at Hope Harbour on the Gold Coast, with the aim to catch a bigun. (Seriously Queensland, sunrise at 4.30am – daylight savings really doesn’t make the blinds fade faster or spoil the milk!)

BIG BOYS’ TOYS

“The level of internal trim is aesthetically magnificent and at the same time warm and inviting”

60

The visual appeal is accentuated by the dashing cabin and enclosed flybridge design with their superb mouldings, elegant and expansive windows plus extended fibreglass awnings to both the cockpit and flybridge levels. From the rear the M59 invites you on board via the optional hydraulic rear platform. You step up easily up to the cockpit via rear doors either side of the transom module. Out back we find a fridge/freezer, barbecue and a hatch for entry to the huge storage garage/lazarette that is also accessed via the pivoting hydraulic lifts that raise the entire rear of the cockpit and gunwales for loading large water toys and equipment similar to that of the M51. “The back of the boat opens up to a large storage space which is perfect for a tender and all the water toys you could want,” said Maritimo international sales and marketing manager, Greg Haines. The rear deck itself is really very large and the added beam plus teak deck help the grandiose feeling. The coaming heights are just right and they contain a rope locker either side that can be converted to live bait tanks or have ice makers fitted if desired. At the rear is a luxurious rear lounge with a solid timber table on twin pedestals forming an ideal setting for entertaining or just simply relaxing. Pull a couple of folding chairs from the lazarette and the party really begins. This Maritimo stock boat was also fitted with a second set of engine controls in the cockpit to both assist docking or perhaps the skipper in the unlikely event that we should hook up a marlin. There was talk of ‘Jonah’ on board but let’s just not go there!

Maritimo M59

The bi-fold rear doors can be used as an individual entry, or divided either side with options to open as a full al fresco. Inside, the stairwell to the flybridge greets you ahead with the electrical control panels enclosed in the cabinetry immediately to your left. There’s a central island bench and L-shaped galley to the starboard. The level of internal trim is aesthetically magnificent and at the same time warm and inviting. It combines hand-crafted timber, mainly teak or walnut, with high-gloss surfaces, ivory leather upholstery, polished stainless steel fittings, white upholstered head linings and black window trims all combined in a highly functional layout from the galley, flybridge and saloon and right through the luxurious staterooms and ensuites. The galley is fitted with premium Miele appliances including a full-size dishwasher, fridge/freezer, ‘Speed oven’ (incorporating grill, microwave and oven), four-plate convection cooktop, rangehood and a huge pantry all set in magnificent cabinetry with bone Corian-style benchtops. There is also a large chest fridge/freezer unit plus ice maker and chart table/storage in a functional multiuse unit under the stairwell. Formal dining or just plain relaxing in the lap of luxury is well catered for in the saloon with a large U-shaped lounge complete with its own convertible table on the port side plus a further L-shaped lounge to the starboard. The fine leather upholstery is thickly padded and exceptionally comfortable and the entire saloon and galley feels spacious and airy with just the right amount of visibility through the full window surrounds that are all fitted with silhouette blinds. The entire living space including the fully enclosed flybridge is serviced with reverse-cycle air-conditioning and heating, which not only serves our Australian range of climates but makes the M59 exceptionally appealing to those on the east coast of America where the recreational vessels venture from the snow-frozen waters of Massachusetts and Maine right down to the glowing warmth of Florida and the Bahamas.

table that I would utilise as a mobile office. I can see a point of difference among couples with the split levels but I personally liked the separation. The master is well serviced with plenty of functional storage and entertainment units, large TV, entertainment systems, flooding natural light and appropriate mood lighting, floor-to-ceiling mirror and its own lounge retreat. Maritimo has provided the premium levels of internal trim and facility to all of the staterooms. The bathrooms both feature good-sized showers, appealing vanities and plenty of room around the toilet systems for us big blokes. There’s even a washer/ dryer combo in the kids’ room for extended voyages. The white fibreglass mouldings, stainless fittings, teak floor and trim combine beautifully with the white vanity and benches. Overall the galley, saloon and accommodation are uncompromising, spacious, luxurious and above all comfortable with plenty of room for a couple of families for extended cruising, or perhaps just that formal dinner party for the crowd.

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2018

The M59 is a three-cabin, two-bathroom vessel with flexible accommodation provided by the beautiful master stateroom amidships, accompanied by an island-style berth in the bow and a very functional visitors’/crew/ kids’ quarters to the starboard with full head height plus convertible full double/twin single beds. There’s even more accommodation in the flybridge with a convertible divanstyle lounge that also easily folds to another double. I reckon it would be a terrific place to wake up with a magnificent vista all around. “The versatility and clever use of space is highlighted with the addition of an optional fold out bed on the flybridge which creates a separate private cabin with stunning views day and night,” Haines said. The master stateroom is a sheer delight. The queen island bed runs diagonally similar to the M62, creating a very individual dimension to nautical appointment. When I say individual, I mean I like it. The large bathroom is on the middle level with the other staterooms. There’s also a make-up

FIVE-STAR FLYBRIDGE

Travelling in the fully enclosed flybridge on a glorious spring day with little wind or swell was quite surreal. You can set the climate to suit yourself as you cruise in an almost silent environment broken only by the cries of excited crewmen when dolphins and whales come close in a heartwarming display, or the (very) occasional cry of “Fish on” as a rugged little pelagic takes a lure. The flybridge feels more like a high-end apartment with the large L-shaped leather lounge/divan with its own convertible table, plus a further two-seater at the top of the stairwell. The flybridge features the same level of trim as downstairs with plush carpets, upholstered roof liners, a large side board/ map cabinet plus an electronic sunroof. It truly provides a vista worthy of King Triton considering the 360-degree vision. The Maritimo M59 demonstration package featured a full quiver of Simrad NSS16 Evo3 multi-function displays, a pair of Pompanette Signature series helmsman’s chairs plus all of the usual trim tabs, auto pilot, twin binnacle controls and multifunction readouts for the Volvo D13–800 powerplants that rocket this big girl up to a pleasing 28.2kts at wide open throttle (2300rpm). If we settle down to a far more sensible 19.75kts at 1900rpm we find a fast but economical cruise using 180lt/h and 522nm range from the 4400lt fuel tanks. Premium performance is found at 16.45kts at 1700rpm using 140lt/h, giving 549nm range; and we trolled all day at around 8-9kts at around 800-900rpm where we seemed to be floating on a cushion and only using

around 24lt/h, giving over 2500nm range for those long sojourns on distant horizons. All M59’s are pre-fitted for Seakeeper Gyro stabilisers if opted, and whilst they are unbelievably effective in maximising stability this is a very sure-footed package that perhaps doesn’t need it. However the customer has the choice as they are very effective for crew with minimal seafaring tummies. I was again delighted to find a very spacious and well-presented engine room, and that you can talk to this old sea dog until you are blue in the face but I still love the simplicity of twin shaft drive technology. The Maritimo M59 is fitted as standard with a Cummins–Onan 17.5kW generator plus a 4.5kW inverter that runs all of the fridges/freezers, entertainment systems etc. She has a draft of 1.225m (4ft) and a water capacity of 700lt. Whilst my origins are in fishing I can really appreciate the inclusive appeal of the Maritimo M59. This is a gorgeous boat with terrific ability and seaworthiness for comfortably intercontinental cruising, or maybe just around the harbour. She has the credentials to take on the nastiest seas but still entertain a crowd in an upmarket harbourside mooring. For me it’s simple. Take out the rear lounge and hydraulic platform, install another set of engine controls on the bridge deck extension and she’s a ripper game fisher. But if your tastes are a little less piscatorial then take her just as she is – either way she’s an ideal temptress. Or you can fit the fish transom like the M51.

ngines in all shapes, sizes, applications and attributes will be on show at SCIBS this year, giving boaties and manufacturers a broad range of horsepower to consider; with the experts on hand to explain the strengths and benefits of each. Spanning the gamut of propulsion, auxiliary, and generator drive engines, inboards, sterndrives and outboard motors; brands on display throughout The Marine Village, on the Marina and in the Pavilions include: Yamaha, Suzuki, Yanmar, Nanni Diesel, John Deere, CAT Marine, Evinrude, Minn Kota, Scania, Volvo Penta, Honda, Vetus, Westerbeke, Mtv, Mercury, Torqeedo, Steyr and many more. Scania Australia will showcase its brand new 925 hp 6-cylinder pleasure craft engine at SCIBS — the first time this specification has been available in Australia. The engine is also available in 700 hp and 825 hp for pleasure craft, and up to 875 hp for workboat applications. The new engine offers an unbeatable combination of fuel-efficiency, low maintenance and high availability, giving operators plenty of reasons to specify Scania for their new or repowered vessels. This is the second Scania marine engine platform to use common rail XPI fuel injection technology to reach higher power levels as well as lower fuel consumption, making Scania the leader in power-to-weight performance. Benefits of the technology include quieter running, faster engine response and a quicker torque build-up. From Seamech, the next generation Volvo Penta gasoline engine, the V8 300hp will be on display, one of the brand’s compact diesel engines suited to sailing boats. Also on show, the IPS 2 pod drive, which will interest larger power boat owners; and brand new at this year’s show, the glass cockpit simulator which recreates the experience of helming a large power boat with the IPS drive installed,

featuring the new EasyConnect app. Andrew Cottle, Seamech general manager said SCIBS was the ideal event to meet current and new customers and catch up with dealers from all over Queensland. “SCIBS is an exceptional opportunity to meet with OEM boat builders and our commercial customers as well,” he said. On the Promenade, Penske Power Systems, the Australian distributor for MTU engines to suit commercial and superyachts, will have their latest engines on show, and a line-up of Kohler marine generators. Brad Bell, from Penske National Marine Sales and Product Support, said SCIBS is a significant event for Penske to present its products and for the public and B2B customers to ask questions. “We also provide service, repairs and maintenance, with a national network of 16 branches,” he said. From Power Equipment — the leading distributor of industrial and marine diesel engines in Australia, NZ and the South Pacific — come the brands Yanmar, John Deere, Torqeedo, PSS, MAZE, Gori, and more. Power Equipment will proudly present the new John Deere marine 4045 (4.5L), 315 hp, 4-cylinder in board diesel engine. This new model offers high power-toweight ratio for repowering and new boat construction, and is ideal for planing and semi-displacement hulls. Queensland-based company Marine Diesel, will be returning to SCIBS 2018 to premiere a brand new product line. Headed by owner and operator Steven Shale and specialising in marine diesel and industrial engine maintenance, installations and sales, it is the largest selling John Deere marine dealer in Australia. The company was recently appointed the Australian distributor for the range of Nanni Diesel marine engines and generators, which have been based on tried and trusted John Deere based engines.

Marine Diesel is now able to supply and install John Deere or John Deere-based engines for various marine applications within Australia. Long-time exhibitor, Steyr Motors will have the range of Steyr Marine Diesel engines on display, covering the range of horsepower from 120 to 292hp suitable for applications such as trailer boats to stern drive sports cruisers, high-efficiency displacement cats, large monohull sailing yachts and specialist racing yachts. Steyr is known predominantly in Australia for its application within the Australian navy — protecting our borders, powering the Zodiac Hurricane seaboats aboard the Armidale Class patrol boats. Steyr Motors managing director, Rob McIntyre said every year they look forward to SCIBS, and meeting “existing loyal customers who have built the Steyr brand over the past 20 years in Australia”. Off Quay Street, Suzuki Street will be dedicated to the brand’s engines, complemented by a brilliant display of boats from Australian Marine Centre, including Haines Signature. The Suzuki engines will range from 2.5hp to 350hp, including the light-weight 100hp which will appeal to a broad cross-section of boaties, including those seeking to repower their trailerboat. Along Masthead Way, Surf Coast Marine will have a line-up of boats from 4.5m to 7.5m, powered by Suzuki and Evinrude outboard, from 50hp to 350hp. W

hile Riviera may export a good part of its 100-plus annual builds overseas, the home market remains the first rigorous testing ground for these highly sought after vessels. The latest, the four cabin 68-footer represents the launch of a new higherspecification range dubbed the Sports Motor Yacht collection, and includes the just released 72ft model as well. These yachts are intended as bluewater adventure boats and as such, boast exceptional long range capability – our 68 review boat can do 2000nm in displacement mode – and with levels of self-sufficiency to match. Chatting with company owner Rodney Longhurst during the unveiling, he explained what was involved during two years of bringing it to market. “All of the owners we spoke with were seeking a new style of motor yacht,” said the Riviera CEO. “Their dream was a bluewater yacht that combines speed, sportfishing and other watersports capabilities, with the confidence of high bulwark side decks, a foredeck entertainment centre, fully enclosed flybridge with internal stairs, a covered mezzanine dining area and ultra-luxurious interiors. “This new Sports Motor Yacht comprehensively delivers on their brief.”

modern interior and systems. The overall layout follows convention, with the galley aft for easy access to cockpit diners, while ahead of that, the saloon enjoys forward seclusion with the main accommodation corridor below. This demarcation from the working part of the boat – upstairs flybridge; then galley with adjoining quarters beneath – makes the 68 ideal for both crewed or family boating. The saloon entry has a bar with stools while inside the U-shaped galley is extensively fitted with deep double sinks surrounded by solid bench work tops. There’s a four-burner induction electric stove with a large microwave convection oven and a dishwasher; plus sea views aft to inspire the chef.

OWNER’S CABIN When it’s time to rest, you step down through the forward saloon to the wide accommodation corridor. The main owner’s cabin uses the full 6m beam of the Riviera 68 to locate the berth aft while the bow has the main guest cabin, with two smaller ones in between. Alternatively, the ‘Presidential layout’ has three cabins and a large longitudinal ensuite, creating an enlarged owner’s berth which includes a lounge area. There are his/hers cedar-lined hanging wardrobes on either side of the stateroom and a 40in TV with five surround sound speakers. The stylish guest stateroom forward includes a walkaround queen-size bed, with storage beneath and wardrobe space either side.

DOCKSIDE VIEW The Riviera 68 I boarded for our sea trial, was an interesting fusion of old and new. Old, or perhaps retro in its sense of the styling, with bold drops of the sheerline and a raked bridge deck, but also packing an ultra-

75

Sweeping hull windows are an eye-catching feature and will draw in natural light, while an overhead hatch enables fresh air as well as privacy. The port cabin aft of the guest stateroom has twin single beds which can, at the touch of a button, form a double.

FLYBRIDGE ENTERTAINER

“Walking forward into the saloon reveals a cosy area with couches either side, where the centrepiece is a beautifully crafted walnut table.”

The staircase to the flybridge adjoins the saloon lounge, so a few steps takes the skipper to the working part of the Riviera 68 without ever getting his deck shoes wet. The tall headroom can be enhanced by opening the electronic sunroof, while a sturdy ceiling handrail guides you fore and aft – a tall boat like this will invariably roll at sea. These are the kind of things that differentiate Riviera from some other brands that are keen on emphasising style over practicality, something I appreciated when I took this boat offshore for four hours in 1-2m swells. Up in this flybridge space, guests are equally well taken care of. A stainless steel framed glass door and awning window connects the flybridge with a large aft deck and al fresco dining area with an L-shaped seating area. At the console, the skipper is on the centreline of the vessel, so they can judge both sides equally and see aft easily (with cameras enhancing the lower views aft). The helm is dominated by a row of four 22in Garmin nav screens – ideal for large

76

Riviera 68 Sports Motor Yacht

format views of vital information. The Twin Disc joystick transmission is the key instrument for slow manoeuvring, as I found when taking the big Riviera out of the marina.

GAME CHAIR In warm climates, usable deck space on your bluewater explorer is essential as is shade, so the inner aft cockpit includes a large covered dining area with a gleaming walnut table alongside the transom bench seating. Aft of this and below is the outer cockpit. Recalling company owner Longhurst’s opening remarks, a game chair can be included here for when the marlin or southern blue fin tuna are running. A barbecue unit is also found in this outer cockpit, ideal for grilling those pelagic prizes as they come sliding onto the swim platform. The bow is well appointed, thanks to a spacious sunken entertaining area with seating for eight.

OPTIMISED HULL

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2018

The hull has a fine entry with plenty of bow flare to minimise spray, while chines underneath give directional stability as the aft section flattens behind the keel to promote lift and ultimately, planing. Propellers are housed in tunnels to minimise drag and the 6m beam is wide enough to cope with heavier loads required for

77

Riviera 68 Sports Motor Yacht

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2018

passage making and bluewater cruising. In designing the hull, Riviera partnered with naval architects Mulder Design in the Netherlands – who has the distinction of designing three of the fastest superyachts in the world. The hull is built to CE standards, obligatory, given that so much of the company’s sales are now found overseas.

OFF TO SEA Manoeuvring a 50-tonne, A$3.9 million motoryacht is not to be done casually, so my concentration was fully focussed as I stood on the flybridge to ease the Riviera 68 off. Pushing the Twin Disc joystick to one side, the Riviera obediently followed as the fore and aft thrusters engaged with the twin propellers to keep the hull parallel to the dock as I cleared. My sea trial would be a coastal voyage north from Sydney, in order to experience swells rolling up from the Southern Ocean to test this new hull. Many Riviera owners venture south of Sydney to explore the wild shores of the Southern Ocean around Tasmania and

Australia’s southern coast, so these boats are built with this in mind. Accelerating, the comfortable leather bucket seat and clear views all round, gave me the confidence to enjoy the ride rather than worry about the shipping on the harbour. Confronting a brisk southerly swell around Sydney Harbour, I could feel the 68SMY’s bow rise to the waves. Only dull thuds were felt and no groaning came from any furnishings. Turning to the swells invariably brought a steep roll to my steering position – one reason why European boats often include a downstairs console as well – but once heading north again, the Riviera rode the swells with ease doing a comfortable 27kt and a fuel burn of 520L/hr. Throttling back to a more economical cruise speed of 22kt showed 367L/hr, which would give a range of about 400nm. Increasing these figures can be done by slowing to displacement mode of 8kt giving a range of 1700nm or more, ideal for those major sea crossings; something this Riviera 68 will do with aplomb.

MAJOR SPONSOR BENTLEY BRISBANE This year, SCIBS is proud to welcome back Bentley Brisbane as the Major Sponsor. 2018 marks Bentley’s 6th consecutive year at SCIBS, which presents the perfect opportunity to not only display the luxury Bentley range but to also celebrate the official Queensland launch of the all-new Bentley Continental GT. Unrivalled in its class, the new Continental GT will be displayed in the Bentley Suite overlooking F Arm on the Marina. The Continental GT redefines what a grand tourer can be. It combines a striking design, phenomenal power and unparalleled craftsmanship for which Bentley is famous, to create the ultimate grand tourer. At the heart of the new Continental GT, lies a newly-enhanced version of Bentley’s iconic 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 TSI engine along with a dual-clutch eightspeed transmission for more efficient gear changes, delivering 635 PS and 900 Nm, 0 to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds Still retaining the classic elegance that made its forebear

so popular, the body of the new Continental GT is more sculptural, bold and sharply defined. The rear of the vehicle has had the most sculptural progression, with the taillights shaped into ellipses, reflecting the silhouette of the exhaust tail pipes below them. Inside the new Continental GT showcases Bentley’s expertise in the authentic use of materials, from the highest-quality natural leathers, to rare, sustainably sourced veneers and hand-polished chrome details. Over 10 square metres of wood are used in each Continental GT, and it takes nine hours to create and fit the wooden inlays by hand. The luxurious cabin also features exquisite details such as a new Mulliner ‘diamond in diamond’ leather design, which is extraordinarily soft to touch. The new interior pattern features both stitching and embroidery. Eighteen months were spent developing the embroidery, individually optimising and programming the exact alignment of each one of the 712 stitches

Northside Marine sales manager Bill Hull said they are very excited to be launching the new brand Sportsman, which originated in Florida in the US around six years ago, and is the product of two highly-respected dealers who wanted to design and build “the ideal fishing boat”. With a perfect blend of family comforts

and angler-driven features, the Sportsman Heritage and Open lines are designed for offshore family fun. Ranging from 21 feet to 31 feet, they offer features and amenities only previously seen on much bigger boats. “The Sportsman boasts a high-quality finish, strong construction and excellent, family-friendly, centre console layout,” Mr Hull said. “They are experiencing huge growth internationally and we think they will have great appeal at SCIBS.” More at www.northsidemarine.com.au

HAINES SIGNATURE BOATS & SUZUKI THROUGH AUSTRALIAN MARINE CENTRE Haines Signature returns to SCIBS with their flagship 788SF, the largest centre console the Queensland builder has ever produced. With the recent resurgence in American centre consoles, the 788SF offers a hot locally-made alternative with a number of big advantages, not least being towability. The 2.50m beam means this 26-footer will be legally trailerable without a permit.

Off Quay Street, Suzuki Street will be dedicated to the brand’s engines, complemented by a brilliant display of boats from Australian Marine Centre. The Suzuki engines will range from 2.5hp to 350hp including the release of the new lightweight 100hp outboard. More at www.amcboats.com.au

EXPERTISE AND HUGE RANGE FOR RIB FORCE INFLATABLES In the RIB and soft-bottom inflatable tender boat market, RIB Force inflatables will be at SCIBS in ‘force’, with as many as 30 boats on display in The Marine Village close to the Main Pavilion. The team will be displaying a variety of boats from the AB Inflatables brand, as well as hosting the release of the AB Jet boat and Oceanus 21, the Aurora V250 and 280. Also on show, the new Mercury range of 175 to 225hp V6 engines, and the Australian release of the break-through engine, the Mercury 20hp that is lighter, more powerful, more efficient and ergonomically designed, appealing to the tender market looking for an environmentally friendly and more economical engine. Back Cove 32

THE BUILDER

What makes a boat inspired by the USA’s Maine lobster fishing fleet so popular locally? The answer is easy. A Back Cove is easy to own. It’s easy to operate and it’s easy on the wallet. Importantly, it’s also easy on the eye and whilst the new 32 is amongst the smallest of the models, sitting between a 30 and a 34, its well-balanced lines are arguably the sweetest in a range extending out to a 41-footer. This is especially true when it’s underway, leaning back and gliding through the water at speed. An unusual off-white gelcoat gave a very distinctive appearance as the afternoon sun played shadows over the hull and changing magically from light to dark. While styling resemblances to an actual Downeast lobster boat have passed into this latest iteration of the brand, the new 32 is a vastly more enjoyable boating experience than the original utilitarian workhorse. Along with the signature sheer line and flared bow, the semi-displacement and single-engine heritage survive. But the level of luxury and sophisticated underwater design shake off direct links to the past, and that mightn’t be such a bad thing.

uying a boat is an exciting prospect and should be fun. Once the big decision to join the fleet is made, the next step is choosing a model that suits your budget and lifestyle, and that’s the hard bit. All the late night web browsing, window shopping, traipsing around shows and talking to owners can do your head in. Thank goodness for the calm pathway to boating that buying a Back Cove must be. Local importer Jed Elderkin has eased more than 60 buyers into new versions over the last 10 years, not including those he has helped into the used market created by owners updating to larger models. These impressive numbers are even more so, as they represent around 10 per cent of Back Cove’s worldwide output. A big part of the success is Elderkin’s calm reassurance and encyclopaedic knowledge of his product from a lifetime of boating.

Back Cove 32

THE PROCESS

The deep bow entry runs back in a variable deadrise profile to a moderate 16 degrees at the transom, combining with reversed chines and running strakes to boost ride and performance and also aid stability at rest. In comparison, the old round bilged lobster fishers might not pass muster in a sloppy anchorage, and much of the 32’s appeal is setting up in a quiet back cove somewhere, watching the sun go down in peace. Meanwhile, along the keel line, a prop tunnel protects the shaft and flattens its angle for optimum drive. Styling might remind us of days past, but its construction is purely modern technology on a first-rate production line by a skilled workforce of more than 100 employees. Mouldings have a vinylester outer surface for better osmosis protection and are resin infused for a stronger, lighter build, with the hull and stringer system fabricated from a Nida-Core sandwich and lighter balsa core on the topsides. Bowsprit and boarding platform take the length overall to 37ft (11.28m). But even the 32ft9in (9.98m) hull measurement is understated and gives validity to the impression the boat is roomy for its stated length. It’s a step up from the aft platform, though a central door, to the cockpit, where L-shaped lounges wraparound the rear quarters making an excellent outside entertaining zone that can be extended by an infill at the door. A pair of elliptical high-gloss cherry tables fit into slots in the floor on sturdy supports that neither rattle nor wobble when underway. Finish is superb and the timberwork combines with blue upholstery to impart a traditional nautical ambience. An extendable SureShade awning covers the entire cockpit and folds neatly out of the way when not deployed. It’s a sensible option for local conditions. The new model includes the most popular features of the previous 30 and 34 and also considers ideas from owners and dealers. Part of the design process was to raise the cockpit sole 50mm to create a single level flowing through to the helm. Details like this make a difference, especially in a smaller cruiser where optimising available space and easy movement is paramount. The saloon boasts a wide opening with drop-down curtains to close it off.

99

Back Cove 32

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2018

THE FINISH

An almost continuous circle of windows surrounds the cabin and an abundance of crisp white fibreglass mouldings highlight the cherry timber features and blue upholstery for a well-lit and cheery interior. Cheery cherry if you like. It’s a well-executed mix of traditional and modern that is immediately engaging. Along the starboard side, the galley is set into a long bench with white Corian top and numerous beautifully dovetailed timber drawers. Equipment is basic, but includes a two-burner Kenyon electric cooktop, convection microwave, drawer-style Vitrifrigo fridge and a deep stainless steel sink, while a second fridge is located under a companion chair. An optional genset takes over from the engine or shorepower to run appliances when anchored. The raised lounge opposite takes greater advantage of the views and can be configured with a variety of seating and table arrangements to cater for up to six guests or a more intimate and roomy café style with two high-gloss maple and cherry tables. The setting also converts to an occasional double bed, and the forward lounge flips to form a forward-facing double companion chair. A central sliding and lockable companionway at the forward bulkhead leads down to the master cabin and a separate shower and head. Rich timber panels and matching furniture nestling against the island double bed look a treat, and an overhead hatch provides a good flow of natural light and ventilation, with air-conditioning available for warmer or cooler weather.

It was pleasing to see the Back Cove 32 test boat optioned with an array of features for extended coastal navigation. The Stidd helm chair is among the best in the business for long voyages, while quality Garmin radar, autopilot, sounder and GPS hint at serious travelling. Although we didn’t set course for Port Macquarie, our ride confirmed the hull’s cruising credentials. Handling was sporty and predictable. The boat turned in a relatively flat arc and the ride over chop and wake was soft, with no rattles or resonance throughout the rev range.

THE RIDE

Our test boat came with the optional 425hp Cummins engine upgrade instead of a standard 370hp Volvo D6, and performance was impressive. From rest, we accelerated smoothly and quickly to a planing speed of 12kts at 1850rpm. A slow cruise of 15kts was achieved at 2000rpm and a fuel flow of 38lt/h to give a range of 262nm. Maximum recommended continual cruise from the Cummins is 2600rpm, which returned 22kts, 60lt/h and a range of 231nm. Top speed on the day was 24kts, although the factory claims 27kts from the Cummins when run in. The Back Cove 32 is the real deal for those looking for an easy-to-handle pocket cruiser or dayboat with genuine seakeeping ability and lively performance. Its well-proportioned lines and smart finishes demonstrate a quality appeal that will endure. Price starts at $525,000. Set-up as tested with a raft of extras, it’s an additional $100,000, which would be good value for anyone wanting to explore the boat’s potential.

Portuguese deck in front of the wheelhouse, a strong bowsprit defined by highly polished stainless bow rails, an extended flybridge with dual station controls and a fibreglass targa and hard top. It has a blissful blend of both old world charm mixed with modern efficiencies with a character reminiscent of the stylish opulence of the grand old days of Hollywood where royalty and celebrity combine with grace and panache. From the moment you step aboard you are treated to a plethora of delights. Boarding is available from the side gate on the wide companionway surrounding the boat with its deep side walkaround deck allowing total security. Alternatively you can step up from the teak-lined rear platform, through the rear door into the beautiful cockpit. All of the cap rails have a faux teak trim that is virtually impossible to tell apart form a highly polished organic original, yet requires far less maintenance to keep it looking sharp. Her sheer and lines are stunning with the off-white gelcoat surfaces giving an added air of glare-reduced grace to the teak floor and uncluttered entertainment arena. What a lovely spot to enjoy nautical life with refreshments or a meal around the beautiful polished Burrwood composite table top. Overhead is the shade of the extended flybridge and in the corner a small sink unit with bar fridge and a disguised container revealing a lower docking station with fully integrated Twin Disc joystick controls, engine stop/start, GPS position hold and the activator for the hydraulic lift on the deck hatch leading to the large lazarette. The port side of the cockpit features the optional modular rear staircase to the flybridge which includes a terrific space for storing the folding deck chairs. “Rapture” parades a stunning blend of finishes and textures both internally and

leming Yachts defy a world that constantly strives to redefine style. They recognise that premium quality is timeless. Fleming Yachts embrace time honoured principles of seafaring design and tradition and enhance them with state-ofthe-art technical development. Miriam Webster’s dictionary describes “Rapture” as “an expression or manifestation of ecstasy or passion”. Hence the Fleming 58 is aptly named. It has a euphoric feeling of aquatic delight elevating me to a seafaring seventh heaven. What a beautiful craft! You don’t have to leave the world of technology behind to retain traditional values. The Fleming 58 “Rapture” is a celebration of modern components with ground breaking electrical wizardry, maximised hull efficiencies, smart power technologies, thoughtful service facilities, entertaining comforts and intimate allure all wrapped in a ravishing package that exudes comfortable high-end quality. Tony Fleming developed his exciting range of trawler-style pilothouse motor yachts after experience gained with American Marine, Grand Banks and Alaskan Series offerings. Tony has been aptly called a “Renaissance Man, having the skills of an engineer and the eye of an artist.” Fleming Yachts have developed a worldwide reputation as the “ultimate cruising yacht”, a claim backed by Tony’s extensive international cruises throughout remote parts of the northern hemisphere. The range now includes the Fleming 55, 65, the flagship 78 and the latest model the 58 as tested.

IN RAPTURE

“Rapture” is a visually impressive boat with its fine flared stem, full beam and high clinker sides defined by a sweeping, stepped sheerline of a true passagemaker. It has a

externally. Stepping into the saloon through the large French doors is an experience all of its own. It presents a delightful living and entertaining space that has the right blend of intimate teak cabinetry combined with plush ceiling liners, large timber-framed windows (with Oceanair auto blinds) and I just had to feel the texture of the superb Ralph Lauren linen upholstery that beckoned you to relax and enjoy. The saloon features rear corner units with a pop-up television with Sonos wireless audio throughout the boat, and a bar to the port complete with ice maker, bottle and glass storage. She has a very comfortable centrally located L-shaped lounge/dinette with a solid timber high/low dining table with folding wings for a large dinner party, plus an optional three-seater settee on the starboard. The euphoric craftsmanship continues from the magnificent cabinet work right through to the hand-laid teak and holly floor which in our case was covered by a plush drop-in carpet for demonstration purposes. As we progress forward in the saloon we find a full-size fridge/freezer, a large pullout pantry and a further ice maker to the starboard plus a comprehensive galley to port. There’s plenty of space to prepare the feast on a bar bench, and like everywhere in the boat there is a multitude of drawer space and storage opportunities. The fittings and appliances include a Miele convection microwave oven, Miele oven, Miele dishwasher, Miele three-burner induction cooktop, pull-out waste, twin-tub stainless steel sink and some very convenient storage ideas for crockery and appliances.

We leave the saloon and galley behind as we venture forward to the pilothouse. This wheelhouse is one of the pinnacles of my experience, not only with the combined technology but also with the presentation. There are four large Raymarine multifunction units for all of the usual navigation, depth sounding, radar and mobile information including visual monitoring for all operational and public areas. Plus Fleming has developed their own “Boning micro-processor controlled wiring system, similar to C-Bus but with a whole lot more. There is digital control and monitoring for every fitting and system including wind, atmospheric pressure, switch gear for all systems, redundancy for all major components including the auto pilot; full engine data, lights, all pumping equip, range, fuel consumption, door sensors, water circulating pumps, anchoring equipment, batteries and power consumption plus switch gear for linking, genset, solar input, all lighting, 24V/12V DC/DC converters, CO2 detectors and fire system, desalinator and much, much more. The wiring has to be seen to be believed and readouts are all neatly displayed and easily navigated on a single multi-function screen directly in front of the helm. The twin-lever digital throttles are a dream to use and combine with joystick and thrusters controls on both the upper and lower station. The leather helmsman’s chair makes you feel like King Oden himself

and the neat presentation is finished off with a large stainless steel spoked steering wheel. There’s a lovely L-shaped pilothouse lounge with chart table behind where your crew can join the skipper at the helm, and sliding pilothouse doors either side. Of course all internals feature ducted heating and air-conditioning and “Rapture’s” owner, Norman, declared that the day head with vanity in the wheelhouse was “one of the best things on the boat!” Leading off from the centre of the wheelhouse is the main stairwell to the upper deck. The flybridge helm features all the electronic essentials found in the pilothouse including the joystick controls, all under the protection of the targa and hardtop that supports the radar, aerials and solar panels. But this elevated platform is actually a refined entertainment arena all of its own and a terrific place to enjoy the journey, or perhaps a mooring alike. There are more lounges and a huge dinette to serve the party. It has its own refrigeration, barbecue and a davit for the 3.8-metre Swift Mirage inflatable with its gutsy 60hp Yamaha outboard.

CLASSIC ACCOMMODATION

The staircase to the lower accommodation level leads off the helm and turns 90 degrees as it flows comfortably below. If you are looking for so-called “Euro” minimalistic décor then the enchantment of the Fleming 58’s superb seafaring demeanour may pass you by. The timber cabinetry encases you in a rich splendour of classic maritime luxury. Our demonstrator had a very large V-berth

up front that seemed even more spacious due to a skylight/hatch encased in a large ceiling recess. There is a guest cabin to the port side with convertible bunks with both quarters serviced by a larger bathroom to starboard. This is a bathroom, not an ensuite! It’s much larger and has a huge shower and repeats the very tasteful fittings and craftsmanship, yet still retains the maritime feel. Master and forward cabins are fitted with TV with Foxtel, Blu-ray and premium sound systems, Sonos and a choice of mood lighting. The teak and holly flooring promotes a terrific flow right throughout the boat.

LET’S GET SERIOUS

The Fleming 58 “Rapture” is 48 tonnes of boat! That translates to solid, soft and dependable displacement and an incredibly quiet and surprisingly efficient ride. This is a very quiet boat, not only due to the smooth running nature of the engines and quality drive system, but also due to the strength and insulation of the solid fibreglass hull construction. It also has dual windlasses (one hydraulic and one electric for redundancy), three separate battery banks each with their own charging with complete redundancy for all systems, 38hp hydraulic bow thruster, full fire system, CE rated, Cummins Onan generator, ASEA Frequency Converter allowing world-wide power compatibility, watermaker/desal, and lazerette with watertight door. So when the time comes for your transit to seventh heaven on the high seas you simply must inspect the Fleming 58 pilothouse cruiser.

T

he navy blue hull of the Palm Beach 65, low slung with sheer down to the tumblehome near the elegant transom looked understated yet distinctive amid the towering box-like fibreglass boats around it. Having been on previous models with Wild Oats skipper Mark Richards, I was keen for us to do the same again on this Malaysianbuilt model, a boat that is part of a major new era for the brand since its move there in 2015. “The new company has brought Palm Beach up to a whole new level because when we were based in Sydney we didn’t have the capacity to build these big boats but now we have so we’ve gone from hull number #3 of the PB 65 up to hull #19 in only three years,” explained Richards as we walked through this newly delivered 70-footer. Available in express or flybridge models with a highly customised layout, our review boat was hull #9 in the flybridge style. The range goes from the 42 to this flagship (plus an upcoming 70) and includes some popular selling models such as the 55 which sold over 30 hulls. All have the distinctive sheer lines and wide transoms that ensures these boats not only look good but also plane well.

there’s twin transom doors. A large bench lies between these doors so that diners can enjoy sitting at the glistening Burmese teak table. Outdoor furnishings uses Ultra Leather which is a tough man-made weave that I’ve seen still looking good after five years of sun on other Palm Beaches. Another L-shaped lounge is against the saloon bulkhead with wet bar opposite on port. Here there is also a joystick EJS drive that neatly elevates from the worktop when in use. Classy. The large tender garage is deep in the hull with electric lifting mechanism and rails for launching. Moving forward is easy, thanks to wide side decks, high rails and the firm teak grip under my deck shoes. The flared bows create a lot of deck space forward, including double sunpads and there’s a deep chain locker for the rode and Maxwell windlass. A stylish toerail includes midship deck cleats to finish off the elegant topsides. Moving to the flybridge requires a steep climb up a ladder but the effort is worth it once there. Without being towering and avoiding too much windage it blends in nicely with the low slung hull while giving commanding views to the steerer on the centralised console. Sensibly, a large visor protects those sitting at the twin helm seats – ruggedly constructed and stylish in stainless. A large Furuno screen dominates with hardwood-clad steering wheel and all key controls around it – throttles and EJS joystick to starboard with autopilot and trim tabs to port. Antennas are stylishly hoisted on a raked back gantry holding twin radomes, open array radar and aerials.

TEAK DECKS

Boarding on the aft deck via the teak marlin board, the tone is stylishly set here on the Palm Beach 65. Sheltered under a classically styled canvas and stainless bimini it sets the retro tone throughout this 70-footer. However, practicalities abound – such as an hydraulic option for the marlin board – and

RETRO CHIC SALOON

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2018

The open plan saloon is classically styled with gleaming brightwork – varnished Burmese teak and chromed metal on the portside dinette table with lounge opposite; which are comfortable double settees and a low coffee table. Vertical bulkheads limit the harsh Australian sun’s incursion while up front a step guides you to the helm on starboard. Alongside is a double bench with high back, so command need not be a lonely experience. A television is integrated on the skipper’s double seat and the front windows are slanted and shaded in a way that gives the best light onto the console. The teak-clad console and steering wheel puts me in mind of an antique British Jaguar car but of course without the analogue dials as Palm Beach use the latest digital gear from Garmin as factory standard, however the Sydney customer is a Furuno fan so two 12-inch screens dominated the display; along with chromed levers for the 1000hp Volvo engines and EJS pod controls that manage fore and aft thrusters. Also included on our review boat was separate Twin Disc controls for the thrusters. Other key gear included the manual/auto controls for the vertical trim tabs, anchor counter and the all-important autopilot from Furuno. Handily, the main switchboard is alongside here as well (with house controls and emergency shut-offs in the galley pantry). Layout options include a galley-up or as fitted on our review boat – down in at the accommodation level. Given the open plan design, the galley doesn’t really feel down below because the topside windows shed plenty of light in the port corner where it nestles and its only three small steps under the main floor. Its elliptical side window could be a wee bit larger but apart from that I had little to complain about the equipment – which included a four-plate electric hob and oven, single sink and oodles of cupboard space both above and below the spacious benches. White goods included a large Miele dishwasher and upright fridge. Reflecting the customisation abilities of Palm Beach, the Sydney owner had a pantry installed nearby that included freezer drawers, more refrigeration and a small crew bunk. This utility room also housed a washer/dryer machine as well for what is a very practical layout.

OWNER IN THE BOW

Accommodation comprises up to four cabins – our review boat had two with the owner’s cabin forward and the guest double in the middle. Usually the master is midships to use the highest volume and is the most stable at sea but customisation is part of shipwright Richards’ offering and our review

Palm Beach Story

Training as a shipwright then moving into the elite ranks of professional sailing brought Mark Richards success and plenty of trophies along with global experience that allowed him to found Palm Beach Motor Yachts in 1995 on the picturesque shores of northern Sydney. Several new models followed and plenty of success (with an estimated 550-600 boats in Australia alone) until the opportunity arrived to expand, through acquisition. When Grand Banks acquired Palm Beach in 2014, one of the big

134

benefits was access to much larger facilities, and an enormous team of boat builders –there is now 600 staff in Malaysia and 700 worldwide – that have allowed increased production, higher turnover and the larger research and development pool to improve the boats. This included using infused carbon fibre, fine-tuning engineering to increase efficiency and access to stateof-the-art 8-axis robotic CNC equipment to quickly develop new models.

New models

Until 2014 the company was limited to its NSW Berkley Vale facility for manufacture and with six models in the product line the factory was at maximum capacity just keeping up with the backlog of orders. Now in Malaysia, hull 15 of the PB 65 is in production as we go to press. “We’re also working on a new range that is more suitable for Europe because it has a sunroof, more light-filled interiors and volume inside,” explained Richards.

“The teak-clad console and steering wheel puts me in mind of an antique British Jaguar car...”

135

Palm Beach 65

boat reflected this in several ways. Showing surprisingly high headroom the owner’s V-berth gave enough space for a double lounge seat on starboard with walking room on each side of the semi-island bed. The guest cabin came with two singles – that swing together – and a deep well between them; as they are fairly low slung berths. The ensuite had a moulded shower and toilet with teak finishes throughout. The skylight was slightly obstructed by the bulkhead, reflecting the customisation, but a small blemish in an otherwise comfortable area. “If you start moving deck hatches aesthetically it won’t look right and you can have problems,” explains Richards as we continued our walk through.

LIGHTWEIGHT HULL

A high build standard is integral to the premium market offering that is Palm Beach, so the hull is hand-laid in e-glass with Corecell foam while the decks and superstructure are carbon; which is the reason the PB 65 weighs in at only 30,000kg. “The deck is infused carbon which is a high standard of build, only one level down from Wild Oats,” explains Richards. Peering through various hatches showed a smooth hull finish which reflected the vast amount of man hours – about six months labour – that goes into each boat from predominantly Australian shipwrights and carpenters. Awlgrip paint and fine gelcoat gave the hull a gleaming appearance that really shone out among the other craft at the Sydney Motor Yacht Club. Engine access was from a single hatch in

the aft deck, which brought me to a teak-clad floor with several feet of separation between the engines and on the outboard side. Headroom was minimal but most service points were seen – the filters against the inner bulkhead, oilways and electrics aft. On the keel line stood two 15kW Fischer Panda generators, giving some redundancy as only one is required. Optional gear included a watermaker which was in the port lazarette. The hull design that was originally done in collaboration with Sydney’s Andy Dovell dictates that the engines are placed in the same spot, so if a customer should choose Volvo IPS pods, jackshafts are used in the transmissions. Engine choices can include shaft drives – our review boat had Volvo’s new 1000hp in-line six cylinder, just launched last year.

SYDNEY SAIL

Sidling out of a busy marina required both fore and aft thrusters controlled by the EJS joystick; a system I’ve used several times and found to be excellent for close quarters controls. Despite its 70-foot this particular boat is run by a married couple who enjoy the classic design yet require the smarts – like the EJS – to enjoy handling her on the busy harbour waters. Comfortably sat at the inside helm I was confronted with a busy seaway – ferries, yachts, sailing dinghies and motorboats enjoying the calm autumn weather. Pushing the throttles down we reached a comfortable cruising speed of 22kts with fuel burn on the Volvo gauges showing 160lt/h in total; giving a large range of 800 miles.

Apart from a few flutters from the canvas bimini it was hard to feel our cruising speed of 22kts, before I brought us to a halt for some slow handling – using the graduated and controlled power of the EJS joystick to push us astern and with relatively little windage the PB 65 obliged easily. With our afternoon sojourn over, I briefly pointed our bows towards Sydney Heads, a place Mark Richards will again be heading to at speed on Wild Oats XI late this year, but the Palm Beach 65 gave me the impression that it could also do the famous 630nm south as well – and with some style.
