Welcome to the
31st Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show T
he time has come to roll out the red carpet for the 2019 edition of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS), and on behalf of the team that has helped cement its status as the Southern Hemisphere’s premier marine event, we welcome and thank you for your support. Since launching in 1988, the boat show has evolved to a four-day celebration of the aquatic lifestyle featuring more than 300 exhibitors, 500 boats on water and land, and an expected attendance of more than 45,000 people. As organisers of SCIBS, we are committed to delivering an annual line-up of global and national launches, trade and networking events, showcases and entertainment that continue to meet the demands of the marine industry and put smiles on the faces of visitors. As always, we’d like to extend a warm welcome to our loyal exhibitors, along with the marine industry leaders who have joined us for another year. SCIBS will once again provide countless opportunities for networking, including the Australian Superyacht and Marine Export Conference that coincides with the event, and our very own Industry Trade Breakfast. We are also appreciative of the unwavering support of our sponsors who are so crucial to the event’s success, with particular thanks to our major sponsor Bentley Brisbane & Gold Coast, VIP and Hospitality Partner InterContinental Hayman Island Resort, the Queensland Government and City of Gold Coast. And of course, we’d like to wish you all the best for your own SCIBS 2019 adventure and once again thank you for being part of the fun.

Johan Hasser SCIBS, General Manager For more than 30 years, SCIBS has been a barometer for the marine industry and given the number of companies wanting to exhibit at this year’s event, there is plenty to be excited about. SCIBS is an economic and promotional powerhouse, for not only the marine industry but Queensland and Australia. It injects more than $150 million into the local economy each year and is a major driver of boating manufacturing and recreational boating. As the boat show where the marine business does business, nothing makes us happier than seeing our exhibitors making sales and, like last year’s event, the signs are positive that more records could be broken at SCIBS 2019.
Rodney Longhurst Riviera, Chairman and Owner Our 600-strong team on the Gold Coast is very busy building luxury motor yachts in the largest facility of its kind in the southern hemisphere. This production facility currently has almost 40 motor yachts across five collections under construction, with more than 50 per cent of those for export. The industry’s future looks bright, with many more marinas and waterfront homes and resorts being developed across the world, many in remote and interesting locations that are allowing boaters to cruise and explore further afield than ever before.

INDUSTRY
We asked an array of industry players how their sector is placed, the challenges they face and their hopes for the future.
22
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2019
We’re in a growth stage, best evidenced by the fact we’ve just doubled the size of our facility. That has been a big part of our strategy during the past 18 months and allowed us to consolidate all our manufacturing into one facility. Better still, we are increasing the size of our workforce. We had so many orders at SCIBS last year that we needed an extra 70 staff to cope with the demand and we’re still recruiting. A big factor in our growth is the US market is coming back on. While Australia, New Zealand and the US are our big markets, we are also slowly building again in smaller markets such as Asia and Europe.

The industry is in a really positive place. We’ve had a great six months of sales and both our Australian and Malaysian factories are at full capacity. Our Australian factory has been booked out for the past four years so we can’t complain. It obviously helps that plenty of people are doing well at the moment. Boating is a lifestyle decision so if people have money and want to go boating in something nice, it’s good for everyone. There’s no question there is a lot of competition in the market these days but that has improved the quality of most manufacturers, which is a positive.
The Gold Coast industry is maturing and it’s great to see just how many excellent professionals are operating in our sector. The boating community’s desire for larger vessels offers very strong potential, with the average size of new boats 30-40 per cent larger than 15 years ago. We have utilised our 20 years’ experience and extensive research around the globe to establish a facility that is more advanced and comprehensive than anything the country has seen.
Alan Blake Boating Industry Australia (BIA), National President As an organisation that advocates for 800 members, we know just how crucial a healthy boating industry is to Australia. More than 27,500 people are employed in the industry across the country, with 75 per cent of those in small business. Each of those jobs changes lives for the better and we are committed to further growing that base. The BIA is committed to going outside traditional areas to target potential boaties. We need to think outside the square and show people just how many ways there are to enjoy the marine lifestyle.
Angus Mitchell Marine Safety Queensland, General Manager One of my mandates is to encourage people to get on the waterways and that’s why we are pleased the boating industry is in a relatively strong position. Growth matters because it adds weight to our push for better access and infrastructure, which in turn helps encourage more people to get on the water and ultimately support the industry. We want people to feel the industry is accessible and something anyone can do, but also about educating people to behave responsibly and making sure boaters are mindful of their activities.
David Good Australian International Marine Export Group, CEO There’s no doubt more businesses are looking to export and we offer a mentoring role for anyone who has an idea or product they want to take overseas. We talk to them about how they can get a distributor, outline what overseas markets suit their product and take them to international boat shows. It’s all about making sure their product is given every chance to capture an export market and they often graduate to become mentors for other budding exporters.

Maritimo X60

O
f all the surprises wrapped up in Maritimo’s revolutionary X60 yacht, perhaps the most startling occurs when you dump the gleaming Twin Disc throttle. The initial surge of power is followed by seamless acceleration, and as you approach planing speed around 16kts, the hull transitions gradually as the nose trims down. The next step is more of the same — smooth, effortless Scania muscle rushing through the rev counter, being delivered via a hull-shape that speaks to Maritimo’s vast racing pedigree. And it’s really that last concept which sums up what young gun designer Tom Barry-Cotter has delivered with the X60 — a carefully considered, rigorously engineered sports yacht that blends inspired design with lessons learned from Maritimo’s years of building and racing boats. But ‘inspired design’? Really? Isn’t that what every yacht designer claims about their newest vessel? Well, yes, but in this case it’s gloriously true. Tom B-C (yep, he’s the son of legendary Maritimo founder Bill) has delivered something openly exhilarating with the X60; it combines cleverly engineered hull-form and layout with a modular aft cabin. Taking inspiration from superyachts (where owners enjoy lounging on their expansive swimplatforms before nipping inside for a cold glass of Veuve Clicquot), the X60’s masterstroke is an aft Beach Club, offering water-level access, a full bar, dayhead, storage and more. There’s much to like about a shady, comfortable nook where parents can keep a close eye on novice swimmers, sunworshippers can lounge on the water’s edge and scuba missions can be launched with ease. But here’s the real (fully customisable) surprise: if a Beach Club is not your thing, the X60 can alternatively be optioned with this aft space as an extra guest cabin, tender garage or even a deluxe galley. Each of these options can easily retain the convenience of an ocean-level dayhead too, so wet or sandy swimmers need no longer trek through your pride and joy with damp feet.
68
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2019
BUILT TO FIT Of course, custom yacht builds are nothing new, but what’s special about this Maritimo is the flexibility for owners to tailor a vast space at the aft of this yacht to their exact requirements – an unheard-of concept in a 60-footer. More importantly, the X60 has been engineered with this adaptable space in mind. In fact, as Tom explained, this was his starting point. “The whole boat has been designed around that aft cabin,” he said. “The engineering systems, the balance, everything – it’s all been tweaked to make that space work. “By including the aft cabin in our initial plans, it has opened up so much extra accommodation space, so we’re not trying to push the engine room as far aft as
Maritimo X60
possible to the furthest point where it can be located.” This has seen all the heavy engineering equipment placed close to the X60’s centre of gravity, so that regardless of the choices a buyer might tick on the options list, every vessel will perform just as it was intended to. “Anything which can vary in weight has been placed as close to the centre of gravity as possible,” Tom told us. “Whether it’s fuel tanks, water tanks, optional gyro, optional watermakers, all the batteries – the heavy equipment that could change weight depending on customer specifications has all been located near the centre of gravity, so it never changes that balance we worked so hard to achieve. “This means the trim attitude of the
running hull is perfectly balanced throughout the rev range, offering a more comfortable ride, and better economy and performance.”
Above: The aft cockpit offers an enticing option for al fresco dining.
BRINGING THE OUTDOORS IN Reports from the Sanctuary Cove and Sydney boat shows last year indicate the boating public are pretty damn enthusiastic about this latest release from Maritimo. This is borne out by strong sales figures already for the show-stopping X60 and there are plenty out and about on the water already, after the first build crossed to New Zealand on its own hull last year. But there’s more – a ‘little sister’ X50 makes her debut at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show this year, so Maritimo’s industrious

boat yard looks to have its order books full for the next few years at least. While the modular aft cabin/Beach Club arrangement is certainly appealing to eager buyers, there’s plenty more going on within this clever new yacht. Electric sunroofs roll back over the helm station and the galley to create an enviable, airy flow throughout the X60 – and that’s before you open the side windows. Hang on. Windows? On a sports yacht? Big deal… oh no, these are something extraordinary. Custom-designed by Alfab and described as ‘panoramic three-stage sliding saloon windows’ these huge expanses of cyclone-rated glass open up the entire topsides of the X60, from the helm right back to the galley, giving a whole new meaning to ‘al fresco living’. Much like the rear utility space, the structure of the X60 was created to include
both the sunroofs and those massive windows along the cabin sides, with engineers forming extra strength into the hardtop to accommodate these concepts as a building block, not an afterthought. And in keeping with the occasionally harsh Australian climate and its friendly insect life, both the forward and aft sunroof include blockout blinds and bug screens to keep owners comfortable in any weather.
RACE INSPIRED Skippers will also appreciate the fantastic lines of sight opened up while docking with the helm-side windows rolled back. Those same lucky X60 captains have the sumptuous pleasure of helming from a delicious new dash. Again taking inspiration from Maritimo’s race boats, the reinvented helm is set to be rolled out across the brand’s

range, including features such as a handstitched leather boot around the steering column and mood lighting beneath the armrest. However, the real appeal is impressive new levels of functionality. Two enormous Garmin touchscreens sit just above the Scania engine monitoring units, which are right next to the autopilot and thruster controls. All this critical information is clustered together neatly, and just outboard of the screens are the Twin Disc throttles and Express Joystick System for unrivalled manoeuvrability in docking situations.
FAST PASSAGEMAKER On the water, Tom’s ongoing experience with Maritimo Racing is borne out through the X60’s slippery performance. Working closely with fellow X-Cat racer Ross Willaton, Maritimo’s engineering team delivered on its goal of hull efficiency throughout the cruising range, coupled with a soft and dry ride. Sea trials on our test

boat produced impressive figures, especially with an upgrade from the standard Volvos to Scania DI 13s, pushing 925hp each. While top speeds approaching 34kts should be enough to keep the most hot-blooded X60 owner appeased, it’s the long-range capability that is truly interesting. The variable deadrise hull, coupled with the efficiency of shaft-drives, mean that even at a thrilling 27kts, the X60’s fuel rate is less than 100lt/hr. Coupled with a hearty 4200lt tank, this will see adventurous owners able to knock off more than 1000nm at a high-speed cruise, including a safety reserve – those are some serious legs for a 60ft sports yacht!
REGENCY SUITE This versatility and ease of customisation is clearly a major factor behind the number of eager X60 owners who have already signed on the dotted line. As mentioned, the engine room comes with a gyro bed ready-to-go for clients wishing to install a Seakeeper gyro and fitting a watermaker is an equally simple proposition. All of a sudden, your harbour sportscruiser is ready to take on bluewater Pacific missions or serious passagemaking up and down the coast. But the options don’t stop there. If a full-beam master suite doesn’t offer quite enough room, there’s an opportunity to extend this cabin down the starboard side a little further, in a configuration known as the Regency Suite. This sees the starboard bunk cabin optioned into a luxe ensuite plus walk-in robe servicing the master cabin, though to be fair, the standard configuration does offer acres of space as is. This sees a desk and daybed adjacent to the centrally-located queen bed, while elliptical portlights provide welcome ventilation belowdecks. The satin walnut timber used throughout the X60 contrasts softly with muted grey fabrics of the daybed and wall panels, including the stylish headliner. This understated design palette continues through the accommodation deck to the

starboard twin with its crossover beds (easier access than traditional bunks) and the VIP forward stateroom, which again demonstrates progressive thinking. Here, the queen bed is offset at around 60-degrees into the starboard bow, opening up unheard-of space around the cabin – yet another one of those moments where you ask: “Why didn’t someone come up with this sooner?” The forward and twin cabins share access to the lower dayhead and a Miele washer and dryer are concealed beneath the stairs as you head aft to the master.

This is amplified by the vast range of seating options at your disposal: a U-shaped lounge around the flip-out dining table, a double-seater behind the helm and a classic Euro lounge in the cockpit nestled up to a minimalist raw teak table. There’s also an enormous electric barbecue and chef station just through the bi-fold aft doors (which can be swapped for a sliding arrangement if you feel the need for extra cockpit seating).
TAKE YOUR SEATS
Which brings us again to that epic Beach Club. For Tom and his team, it made absolute sense to include this option on their debut vessel as it toured boat shows, solely for the impact it has on potential buyers. It’s all too easy to picture yourself relaxing at water-level with your closest friends, enjoying a cold drink at what is basically your very own swim-up bar. There’s a wine
For guests enjoying the single-level opulence of the X60’s main deck, it’s hard to believe this is a 19m yacht. The open spaces overhead and to the side, afforded by the dual sunroofs and panoramic windows respectively, create the impression of a much larger yacht – you’re not hemmed

fridge to hand, icemaker, sink and ample storage. Heck, there’s even a TV you can view while bobbing in the ocean, hanging off the swimplatform! Most buyers to date have ticked the Beach Club option, such is its appeal, though a handful chose to appoint the utility space as a fourth cabin, and others selected the tender garage/PWC storage. Just being able to offer clients such an unconventional level of customisation really provides Maritimo with a solid footing and distinct advantage in what is becoming a very crowded market for single-level sports boats. But its clear designer Tom and his team have done their homework in terms of what the people want and this is already being demonstrated in the strong sales figures to date. What you get is an innovativ sw vessel that fits a whole lot into its length and, while not exactly cheap, the X60 sure is a lot of boat for the money. It’s smart thinking done well by Maritimo and that will always sell.

am a 57 year old semi-retired Japanese man with bleached blonde hair. I haven’t taken on this look because I want to become a punk rock star, but rather, to disguise my thinning hair by matching it more closely to my skin colour – like camouflage. You know, so that my hair doesn’t contrast with my head like a barcode. Way back in the ‘90s, I kept corals at home. With the help of Okinawan live rocks (dead coral skeletons), protein skimmers, and ‘kalkwasser’ (a high PH calcium supplement), the aquarium nourished several kinds of hard coral in an urban environment. That was when BBS (bulletin board systems) such as CompuServe powered communication within the coral hobby community, much like the internet does today. But it wasn’t until I first visited the Maldives that I graduated from coral aquariums to living reefs. Wow! The real thing was 100 times better... I love the sea and the creatures within it, and in particular I adore hard corals in tropical seas. These beautifully colourful corals thrive in pristine water with lots of sunlight. Their fluorescent protein shines bright under the sun to regulate and optimise internal conditions for endosymbiotic dinoflagellates. Big words aside, I’m drawn to the vivid colours and tranquil views of endless hard coral patches and surrounding ecosystems as I float in the tropical sea that supports them. This coral enchantment has led me to spend much of my life shooting modern high-definition videography in Okinawa, a subtropical island chain in the south of the Japanese archipelago. Having visited most of the Okinawan islands, I decided to focus on Kerama National Park region, especially around the villages of Zamami Island.
ZAMAMI VILLAGE Tokyo, Kyoto, the powdery snow of Niseko and snow monkeys in Nagano; that’s what often comes to mind when people think of Japan. But, today, I reluctantly introduce Zamami as an alternate tourism destination for

environmentally-conscious visitors (just don’t tell your rowdy friends and relatives). The Kerama Islands gained notoriety when the US Navy fleet first gathered there prior to the invasion of mainland Japan at the end of WWII. But why Kerama? Okinawa sits in a strategically significant area – even today it prevents China from open access to the Pacific Ocean. Because of its wonderful natural anchorages, Kerama became a stepping stone

for the invasion, but decades later, it is a paradise for divers and pleasure boaters. Located 20 nautical miles west of the main island of Okinawa, Zamami and Tokashiki are the two villages that constitute the Kerama isles. Zamami is tucked behind the larger and more accessible Tokashiki island – with virtually untouched nature, the village welcomes diehard scuba divers from all over Japan. While the more famous Ishigaki and Miyako islands attract more tourists via

commercial airlines, there are no regular flights to the tiny airport that services the Kerama Isles. The only reasonable way to get there is a one hour ferry ride, or a chartered helicopter from the main island.
FINDING KIKI

But enough of the geography, let’s talk boats. A few years ago I acquired my first boat, a 1991 Grand Banks 42 Classic that was recommended to me by a seasoned sailor. I spent close to a year cleaning it up, designing and installing modern navigation systems, and having wood work redone by carpenters. I cruised around Tokyo for a while, then took a 1200 nautical mile trip down to Okinawa. That GB 42 provided me with the insights that led me to order a Fleming 58, which incidentally became the first Fleming yacht to sail from the factory in Taiwan under its own power. This trip from Kaohsiung to Tokyo provided us with an eventful week-long maiden voyage, complete with testing 20-foot waves and plenty of bluewater adventures to ensure everything was running as smoothly as it should.
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2019
New Flemings are usually shipped securely below the decks of container ships, wrapped in white shrinkwrap. But since Taiwan is not so far from Japan, we decided to pick up the boat from Kaohsiung and sail home ourselves. Nothing to it, we thought. We were wrong! First there were the late typhoons of 2017 – we spent ten days in Kaohsiung Harbour waiting for the storms to clear. In the meantime, we went to Costco and bought three large cartfuls of groceries and booze. You know how you buy too much when you are hungry? Soon we had enough food to last at least 30 days at sea... When we finally left the dock at Kaohsiung, we enjoyed a tranquil cruise down the west coast of Taiwan watching the sun rise. We were aiming to reach the town of Taitung on the east coast and were expecting ‘a bit of weather’ at the southern tip. But it was more like Cape Horn, with four to five metre waves from all directions and 40 knots of wind blasting us with no mercy. Our experienced professional captain was at helm and after 30 minutes of trying to negotiate the angry seas he calmly murmured, “Let’s turn around.” His next move was to steer the yacht up the face of the wave at full throttle, before turning through 180-degrees near the top of the crest. I almost needed a change of pants.

SECOND CHANCE So this was the maiden voyage of Kiki. We took refuge and stayed overnight at a harbour near the southern town of Kenting. The following day we set off and the conditions were slightly better, so we pushed on directly to Japan and the island of Miyakojima. It was tough going heading directly into the northerly November winds. We were knocked around for a whole week as we made our way to Tokyo with constant banging on the hull, and occasionally the boat seemed to jump out of the water. Talk about a torture test! But thanks to rugged construction by Fleming, the only damage was to some door hardware which the company arranged to be fixed in Tokyo. That’s great service!
OPTIONS GALORE When a new visitor comes onboard my 58 Kiki, the first thing I show them is the engine room, after demonstrating the beautiful silhouette designed by Adi Shard, This air-conditioned, all white, walk-inwithout-squatting engine room houses two engines, two generators, two blackwater pumps, two freshwater pumps and many more redundancy systems. A bulkhead containing 5500L of fuel tank separates and seals off the engine room from living quarters. I consider this a particularly logical, safe and seaworthy design.
Above: Hard to believe this is Japan, but there is a wealth of ‘hidden’ islands to the south. Left: The weather often made life difficult during Kiki’s maiden journey.

The Fleming’s semi-displacement hull enables me to go fast (20 knots) when needed and save fuel when cruising (20L/hr at eight knots). A vee-shaped bow without chines makes for a bit of wet boat in rough seas, but on the other hand, provides a very soft ride. Such compromises are needed for the versatility that’s demanded by everyday use. Duncan Cowie, who previously worked in the aerospace industry, has designed a universal voltage/frequency shore power and redundant electrical system. The custom helm console has enough space to accommodate all the gadgets I wanted to install including five chart plotters from three manufacturers, two VHF radios, infra-red camera control, 3D sonar, a PC, and standard arrays of equipment. This bridge provides an isolated piloting area that allows the captain to concentrate on the sea. During a long voyage with a ‘round-the-clock shift schedule, this setup provided us with some much needed discipline. The Portuguese bridge layout presents the pilot with a superior bird’s-eye view, while it also enables easy boarding at the tall commercial wharfs often found in remote islands. Last but not least, the boat boasts solid FRP construction that withstands open seas and a beautiful finish that only comes from the best craftsmen working with the best materials. This made perfect sense after I visited Fleming’s shipyard in Tung Hwa, Taiwan. Tung Hwa was a furniture making district until 50 years ago, when the Japanese brought and spread shipbuilding skills to Taiwan.
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2019
Much of this skill and craftsmanship has flourished in Tung Hwa, while it’s unfortunately been all but forgotten in Japan.
GELATIN SEA Myself and 31-year-old ex-army crewman Toshi regularly set out aboard Kiki to Zamami, loaded up with professional movie-making gadgets. After a six year tour of duty, Toshi became a fisherman in Okinawa, vacuuming seaweed from the ocean floor up to six hours a day. We spend a few days at a time on the journey to Zamami, fishing for our food as we go. Two generators, a reverse-osmosis water maker and full-sized washer/dryer make our stays at sea civilised and odour-free! We have

two SS316 marine-grade steel poles – more than strong enough to jump up and down on – and these help to support high-tech stabilising equipment for the full frame 8K camera we use for filming onboard. For aerial shots, a large drone takes off and lands on a mock helipad at the bow. And a newly installed scuba compressor helps us breathe easy while taking underwater video. A spare cabin has been turned into a miniature video editing room with a highpowered PC and HDR video monitor. In here, I become the post-production engineer who edits and colour grades raw 8K clips into vivid 4K HDR movies. With these modifications, we produced our first 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray disk Gelatin Sea, a hippie description of the groovy, lucid, and tranquil sea of Zamami. I tried to portray a window that frames the beauty of Zamami, so that viewers can be immersed in the scenery through their living room 4K TV. The results are amazing! Finally, I would like to thank my wife Machiko, daughter Hana, all the friends and staff at First Marine and Fleming Yachts for making my life on board Kiki possible. vid boat lovers and clued-up manufacturers will want to schedule a few hours of browsing time to explore the broad range of horsepower on offer from some of the world’s biggest brands. Where else but SCIBS can you have access to the latest information straight from the horse’s mouth, with experts on hand at each exhibit ready to talk you through the abilities and key features of their showcased models?
INBOARD MOTORS Scania Engines returns to SCIBS with its popular 13L six-cylinder engine that is rated up to 925hp for pleasure craft. The frugal, low emission common rail engine can be specified to meet the most stringent global emissions standards if required and has been specified by Maritimo customers for the new X60 model. Like all Scania marine engines, which are available from a 300hp five-cylinder through to a 1200hp 16L V8, the six-cylinder unit majors on low operating costs. Exceptional fuel consumption performance benefits range for operators, while offering additional advantages such as a light-weight, compact design, and ease of servicing thanks to the Scania modular engine concept and individual cylinder heads. All Scania marine engines offer a 500-hour service interval. Scania engines have been successfully integrated into repowering projects around Australia as well, providing a cost-effective replacement for older technology engines. The team at Power Equipment continue to expand and diversify its 4LV series of common rail marine engines with the addition of sterndrive models. The new models are fitted with the Yanmar ZT370 sterndrive, which features a hydraulic multi-disc clutch that delivers exceptionally smooth and quiet gear engagement. Last year, the Japanese high-performance engine manufacturer rounded out its 4LV series with two high power options, the 230Z (230mhp) and the 250Z (250mhp). The full 4LV range now offers five power ratings from 150mhp to 250mhp. All five models are based on an identical engine block that has the same dimensions and weight, so it is easy for boat builders to install various options.
4LV engines feature the very latest electronically-managed common rail fuel injection system. They give boat owners classleading power-to-weight ratios and powerful low-end torque performance and outstanding acceleration. Now, with the Yanmar ZT370, boat builders have the perfect 4LV sterndrive option for new builds and repowering. The ZT370 sterndrive is available in various gear ratios, so it is an excellent propulsion source for recreational motorboats and lightduty commercial vessels in both single and dual installations. hile Riviera may export a good part of its 100-plus annual builds overseas, the home market remains the first rigorous testing ground for these highly-sought vessels. This four cabin 68-footer is part of the Sports Motor Yacht collection – intended as bluewater adventure boats. As such, these vessels boast exceptional long range capability – our 68 review boat can do 2000 nautical miles in displacement mode – and with levels of self-sufficiency to match. The overall layout of this three-level stunner follows convention, with the galley aft for easy access to cockpit diners, and a saloon forward for seclusion. The saloon entry has a bar with stools while inside the U-shaped galley, it’s extensively fitted with deep double sinks surrounded by solid bench work tops. There’s a four-burner induction electric stove with a large microwave convection oven and a dishwasher; plus sea views aft to inspire the chef while they’re working.
ROOM FOR ALL The master suite uses the full six-metre beam of the Riviera 68 to locate the berth aft while the bow has the main guest cabin, plus two smaller ones in between. Alternatively, the ‘Presidential layout’ has three cabins and a large longitudinal ensuite, creating an enlarged owner’s berth with lounge area. Sweeping hull windows are an eye-catching feature and will draw in natural light, while an overhead hatch enables fresh air as well as privacy. The port cabin aft of the guest stateroom has twin single beds which can, at the touch of a button, form a double.

invariably roll at sea. Guests here will enjoy the rear door and awning window connecting the flybridge with a large aft deck and alfresco dining area. The helm itself is dominated by a row of four 22-inch Garmin nav screens – ideal for large format views of vital information. The Twin Disc joystick assists slow manoeuvring, as I found when carefully taking this big Riviera out of the marina.
OUTDOOR OPTIONS In warm climates, usable deck space on your bluewater explorer is essential as is shade, so the aft cockpit includes a large covered dining area with a gleaming walnut table alongside the transom bench seating. Aft of this and below is the outer cockpit, with barbecue unit for grilling those pelagic prizes as they come sliding onto the swimplatform. The bow is similarly well appointed, thanks to a spacious sunken entertaining area with seating for eight.

RIviera 68 smy OFF TO SEA My sea trial would be a coastal voyage north from Sydney, in order to experience swells rolling up from the Southern Ocean to test this new hull. Many Riviera owners venture south to explore the wild shores of Tasmania and Australia’s more remote coastlines, so these boats are built with this in mind. Confronting a brisk southerly swell around Sydney Harbour, I could feel the 68 SMY’s bow rise to the waves. Turning to the swells invariably brought a steep roll to my steering position, but once heading north again, the Riviera rode the waves with ease at a comfortable 27 knots and a fuel burn of 520L litres per hour. Increasing this range is a matter of slowing to displacement mode of 8 knots giving a range of 1700nm or more. This will prove ideal for those major sea crossings; something this Riviera 68 will do with aplomb.

When this Horizon owner felt limited by the entertaining options aboard his existing Horizon E67, he didn’t just look at the next model up, he stepped forward in time. STORY TIM VAN DUYL | PHOTOS SUPPLIED

Horizon FD87
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2019
111
D
esigned with efficient low-speed cruising and entertaining in mind, the bold appearance of the revolutionary Fast Displacement (FD) series from Horizon Motor Yachts has captivated many. But there is more to this FD87 than looks alone. This vessel is a kind of hybrid that pairs the FD87 Skylounge with topsides from the slightly shorter FD85. This outcome benefits from the 87’s longer hull, while the open-air bridge of the 85 is better suited to the WA climate she calls home.
THAT DESIGN The look is simply stunning up close. A striking presence is created by the wide beam and flowing lines, both horizontally and vertically. There’s an immense sense of power imparted by the near-vertical plumb bow and the tapered hull windows that lean forward toward the anchor-guides. From side on, the FD87 looks to advance not only with speed, but with purpose. Gaining the envy of fellow boaties on the water is one thing, but owners and guests also require that such high standards flow through as they step aboard, as the evening wears on and well after they depart. You need to ensure there is some go to match the show...
BOARDING PARTIES Whether you’re at the helm, on the swimplatform or at the saloon’s formal dining table, the focus is on adaptable entertaining spaces that can easily be made discreet and private. Thanks to the beam of the FD87, the swimplatform is, well ... Hue Mungus, and benefits from a lazarette that’s capable of swallowing multiple toys, dive gear and housing an additional cold-store, dive compressor, barbecue and hot shower. In the cockpit, owner Garry chose a builtin rear lounge with a cool store, plenty of general storage and a dedicated and wellpositioned shoe drawer. The fixed lounge is complemented by a trio of outdoor settees and a coffee table, all able to be easily removed should the area be needed for big parties.
112

Above: A low-rise sunbed on the bow offers the perfect secluded retreat for sunlovers.
INDOOR APPEAL One step into the saloon and the bespoke chevron parquetry floor stands out as a dominant feature. The dark Wenge wood softens the aesthetic to produce a warm and inviting space, contrasting well with white marble laid flush under the bi-fold doors to the teak cockpit. The use of floor-to-ceiling windows along the saloon sides bathes this space with natural light yet their one-way finish and the addition of storm shutters under the rear buttresses create privacy, should the owners wish to dine in real solitude. Forward and to starboard is the galley with twin sinks, full-size oven, dishwasher and fridge. An induction cooktop sits at the centre of U-shaped Corian benchtops with stainless steel splashback and rangehood.
A FLOOR FOR ONE To the port side of the galley there is access to the main stairwell, which conceals considerable storage beneath and provides an entrance to the owners’ stateroom.

Horizon FD87
The FD87’s considerable 7.07-metre beam means the lower deck can be split lengthways with double staterooms either side. The claims from the factory that the FD87 has similar total floor space to the RP110 seems believable as you wander between the VIP, twin doubles and twin single staterooms, all with their own ensuites – the volume of the lower deck of the FD87 is seriously impressive. Back on the main deck, in the master, the standout is the ensuite accessed by a centre sliding door. Inside are his and hers sinks with a toilet and shower to their flanks. The floor and walls are marble, the same bright, clean stone used in the saloon entrance.
as well as the comfort of the optional (and frankly outstanding) Bensenzoni pilot chair. The bridge helm seems simple in comparison to the main helm but still contains all you need in terms of engine management systems, twin high-definition nav screens, radios, thruster controllers and stabilisation. Behind the helm is a wet-bar with upgraded cool-boxes from Dometic, right where you want them – near the jacuzzi. Fully decked in teak, the bridge is comfortable underfoot, even in the heat of summer and with the tender down from its cradle, there is room to party.
COMMAND STATIONS
UNDER THE WATER
Internal access to the bridge is via the helm room, where the captain will appreciate the company facilitated by an L-shaped lounge,
Due to its beamy nature, when you see the FD87 at the dock you might question the vessel’s ride and seakeeping characteristics,

but the water conceals a clever design – wave-piercing bulb. Directional stability underway is further aided by a near full-length skeg which, when coupled with the lift of that bulb, creates a smooth ride into an oncoming swell. The owner opted for upgraded digital fin stabilisers to help counteract the local rolling swells blown in from offshore favourite Rottnest Island. We were lucky not to encounter the conditions needed to comment on their viability, but Garry and his crew agree they were a necessary upgrade.

propellers through ZF gearboxes. Underway, the most dominant sound was that of the engine room intake fans, though there was some minor resonance just noticeable through the hull when barefoot. The MTUs feature technology that I think is important to long term ownership – individual cylinder heads for ease of servicing and a secondary PTO for steering redundancy. The fact that both engines have this feature gives Hue Mungus twin steering back-ups in the unlikely event of standard hydraulic system failure. It also allows for one engine to propel the vessel while still steering both, a major boon for keeping engine hours down and lowering fuel consumption. In a quick test of the idea, we saw 9.1 knots at 1400rpm while burning only 77 litres per hour through a single engine.
Horizon FD87

HORIZON FD87 with FD85 topsides PRICED FROM USD $6.93 million
OPTIONS FITTED Optimal cruise came at a sedate five knots, where a range of over 1250 nautical miles with ten per cent fuel in reserve is possible. This puts Bali in Garry’s sights though a stop in Exmouth would give some peace of mind. It certainly means Hue Mungus can choose her ports of call should she embark on a circumnavigation. A must-have option for Garry in windy WA, or others in similarly blowy locations, is the thruster upgrade package. Up from 30 to 55 horsepower each, they make parking Hue Mungus a lot less daunting in a sea breeze.
THE WRAP This FD87 and the range as a whole, pushes the boundaries of local design in the right direction. By using smart technology for both stabilisation and in hull design, Horizon has created great looks with outstanding space to length ratio – important in tight marinas. More importantly, this particular FD shows off the boatbuilder’s flexibility in design by creating a hybrid of two models which can honestly be described as perfectly suited to both its new owner and our outdoors-friendly environment.

by a lightweight canvas bimini. Key navigation controls are all present and accounted for – twin electronic throttles, IPS joystick and two 12-inch Garmin plotter screens. On the foredeck, Riviera has matched an oversize electric Muir windlass/capstan to a 15kg anchor to facilitate the expected regular stops on a vessel of this size. Then it’s time to kick-back on the forward sunpad and slip a few coldies into the drinks holders.
SALOON
R
iviera has dabbled in this 43-foot size before, but the market has shifted in recent times as mass-produced competitors snap up the lower end and premium products push hard at the top. So, just like the auto industry where similar components are commonplace, it comes down to build standards and overall design to make the difference – this is where Riviera stands out.
A MATTER OF SIZE Beginning with a solidly moulded offshore hull, the 39 Sports Motor Yacht has a good base to house three levels of living space while earning the ‘sporty’ moniker by breaking the 30-knot barrier. Aesthetics can make or break the deal for many prospective owners in this category but the 39 is onto a winner with the curved profile of its larger siblings and undulating hull windows. The newly designed hull facilitates the requisite high volume for living below decks and enough flare in the bows to be seaworthy while giving the owner sufficient space in the main suite.
DISCRETE FLYBRIDGE Flybridge access is via a ladder, and here one finds a U-shaped lounge aft and steering console on the forward port quarter, protected
138
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2019
The saloon is airy and open thanks to vertical bulkheads, large opening side windows and a stylish visor over the front. There’s easy access to the port-side steering console, which is in front of a double lounge bench and opposite the starboard galley. Handily, the lounge table drops-down to became a day (or night) bed. The galley is located towards the stern and is modest but sufficient – reflecting the day use and weekender clientele for this boat. There’s a deep sink, single electric hob and microwave convection oven.
THREE BED CABIN A wide central corridor beside the helm leads below, to a dual-access bathroom on the starboard-side, behind the owner’s bow cabin, as well as a midships guest cabin. The 39 has a versatile guest cabin, with three beds across its midships layout. It’s ideal for a gaggle of teenagers, or two of the beds can become a double with an infill.
ACCESSIBLE HULL The business end of the Riviera 39 Sports Motor Yacht becomes apparent when the cockpit sole elevates to reveal the Volvo Penta D6-IPS600 engines and pod transmissions. The 43-foot hull is built around these 435hp supercharged engines with their forward facing propellers. The build comprises hand-laid GRP with a strong keel, collision bulkhead at the bow and sandwich deck for insulation and sound-proofing.
Above: The wide GRP swimplatform can be optioned with fishing accessories and will easily stow a small tender, too.
Riviera 39 Sports Motor Yacht
SYDNEY HARBOUR SOJOURN Motoring away from the dock through the speed restriction zone, I accelerated and felt the hull gently rise as the engines shifted between supercharged and turbocharged modes, easily putting us on the plane. A slight tweak had the 39 veering past slower vessels and up to cruising speed (25 knots with the revs at 3000, fuel burn at 116L/hr for a range of about 333 nautical miles). Finally, I put the throttles fully down and watched the numbers climb to an impressive 34 knots before backing off to enjoy the views from what is a quality Australian sports cruiser.

140
Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2019
Riviera 395 SUV
T
he sports sedan category is becoming an increasingly busy one, and it’s no realm for unimaginative boatbuilders. British, Italian, French and other Euro-style offerings ensure it’s a hot market, and you’d better believe the temperature is almost unbearable around the 40-foot zone. So what makes this 395 SUV stand out from the pack? It’s all about the essentials. Just like a hot hatchback, the maritime coupes need to be packing the right gear. These include a big boot (aft cockpit), speed off the traffic lights (to pull a waterskier) and sharp handling for easy parking (at the dock).
FIRST IMPRESSIONS The open-plan, two-cabin Riviera 395 has what it takes (including a base price on par with several competitors), but what’s under the bonnet? Raising the aft engine hatch exposes twin Volvo IPS 500s matched to pod transmissions and there’s a lot to be said for the manoeuvrability of this combo. Elsewhere, key design points that differentiate the 395 SUV from its competitors is the wise use of bulkheads and overhangs to protect users from the harsh southern hemisphere sun. Water access is another major requirement — as is dockside
convenience — so the wide swimplatform can house a bunch of kids fishing while dad operates the transom barbecue, and there’s still enough room for the RIB to be stacked outside against a stainless handrail. Stepping up into the vast cockpit reveals the corner seating and dining table with bar fridge nearby. Adjacent to these is the starboard-side Volvo IPS joystick control for those tight marina-berthing situations. Alfresco diners will appreciate fuss-free surfaces here – bare fibreglass flooring (with synthetic teak options) and vinyl flooring
Top: The well-equipped galley would not look out of place in a modern apartment. Above: Casual dining is enhanced by wide hull windows in the saloon. Left: An extended hardtop offers sensible sun protection in the aft cockpit.

Riviera 395 SUV
Just like a hot hatchback, the maritime coupes need to be packing the right gear.”
in the saloon. This space is airy and open and access is good through the uncluttered corridor to port. What sets Riviera apart here is the detailing: sturdy longitudinal handrails, Sunbrella soft furnishings and solid light American oak. Other quality touches include the double leather helm bench and an ergonomic leather fascia with Garmin instrumentation. There’s twin 12-inch screens for navigation and a central one for the Volvo engine controls. All other systems are managed by the CZone digital bus screen and controls.
WEEKENDER CABINS Belowdecks we find guest cabin versatility with three beds in a midships layout. That’s more than enough for a long weekend, plus a single bathroom on starboard, with dual access to the double owner’s berth in the bow. One striking feature is the elongated window angled down towards the ocean, creating a kaleidoscopic feeling from the separate shower unit or when standing at the vanity sink. Mirrors on the two overhead lockers are perfectly placed and fresh air is a short reach above to the opening skylight.
A GOLD COAST BLAST Leaving the dock is child’s play – the joystick pod drives precisely control the hull. A twist on the joystick towards your direction of travel pushes the boat that way, and Volvo’s highpower mode is handy for windy days. Standing at the bolster seat, only a light touch was required as I pushed the hull’s shoulder deeper. A faint murmur emanated from the Volvos, and the GPS showed our speed topping out a shade of over 30kts – more than enough for coastal jaunts and those lazy long weekends at your favourite anchorage.
