FROM THE EDITOR
Ben Keys WELCOME TO THE 27TH ANNUAL SANCTUARY COVE INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW AND THE 2015 YEARBOOK

W
hen you step through the gates of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) this week, take a moment to consider that 2015 marks the 27th anniversary of this iconic marine event. Twenty-seven years is a solid innings by any standard, but more so when you realise the Show has ridden the marine rollercoaster through both the good times and the tough years and emerged as the most prestigious event on the Asia-Pacific boating calendar. A large part of this can be put down to the hard work and professionalism of the Boat Show Team, but it’s also due to Australia’s extremely buoyant marine industry, one which thrives on innovation and excellence. It’s no accident Aussie-made boats and marine accessories are in high demand internationally. Our local marine businesses have steadily carved out a rock-solid reputation everywhere the sand meets the sea. These days, it’s just as likely an Australian boatbuilder will be fielding as many inquiries from Newport, USA, as they are from Newport, NSW. Best of all, much of that clever thinking and meticulous craftsmanship has been gathered up and dropped right in your lap at beautiful Sanctuary Cove this weekend – it’s all here to embrace and admire, and of course, if the mood strikes, it could be yours to take home, too. SCIBS offers a unique chance for business people, boat buyers, salespeople, inventors, or indeed anyone with even a passing interest, to dive in and immerse themselves in the best the industry has to offer. However you like to float around, it’s all here, from a new fishing boat, a bowrider to tow the kids, your next charter business vessel, a luxury sports cruiser, or a sailing yacht to take on the ocean’s far reaches – every taste is accounted for. Add to that every boating accessory you could ever need (and some you’ll wonder how you lived without), plus a wealth of expert advice from industry specialists, and it’s easy to see why SCIBS is the show where the marine business, does business. It’s simply the best of the best, all here on display and a fine chance to examine just how far Australia’s marine industry has come. I’ve been lucky enough this year – in my role at Trade-a-Boat magazine – to spend time on a handul of the glossy showboats featured in the pages of this magazine, and believe me, these vessels are truly world class. Boats such as the new-look Integrity 320 Express Sedan and the local success story that is the Elandra 53, show how brightly our marine talent can shine, but of course there’s nothing quite like seeing for yourself. Wander around and take it all in. Dream big. Enjoy j y the show.

MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GOLD COAST
Tom Tate “TO THOSE VISITING THE CITY AND SCIBS OVER THE COMING DAYS, THE CITY IS ‘OPEN FOR BUSINESS’”
TOM TATE
Mayor of the City of Gold Coast
C
ongratulations to the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) for reaching its 27th year. SCIBS is an opportunity for businesses across the country to showcase the best recreational and light commercial boating products and services that the industry has to offer. The Show continues to provide the industry with a brilliant platform to network and do business on the beautiful Gold Coast. The City of Gold Coast is home to a multi-million dollar marine industry and I would say to those visiting the city and SCIBS over the coming days that the city is “open for business”. I am pleased to say that people from around Australia and the world are taking the opportunity to enjoy and embrace the Gold Coast lifestyle. We have a well-established industry of boat manufacturers and suppliers with access to a marine precinct, marine trade training centre, nine luxury marinas and facilities for yachts up to 65m. The City of Gold Coast works hard to attract investment into our city and to build capacity of local business through assistance packages, introductions and advice. While you’re making the most of SCIBS, make sure you also take the time to enjoy the rest of what the Gold Coast has to offer. From world-class entertainment, dining and shopping options to the city’s spectacular coastline and iconic rainforests – the Gold Coast is a city like no other, inspired by lifestyle and driven by opportunity. During the Show, I would also encourage you to take the opportunity to enjoy some of our award-winning restaurants and vibrant nightlife – there is something for everyone. I wish the SCIBS organisers, exhibitors and visitors all the best for this year’s event and look forward to hearing what I’m sure will be glowing reviews.

Climb on board for SCIBS
W
hen the gates swing open for the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) on Thursday morning, it won’t just be marine industry representatives flooding into the picturesque Sanctuary Cove site. Boats and the ocean have a unique ability to capture the imagination of anyone who’s ever spotted a distant white sail disappearing over the horizon, or perhaps pictured themselves on a sunlit aft deck, with a glass of something chilled to hand. There are plenty among us who enjoy nothing more than a lazy day wandering up and down the marina dreaming of the possibilities offered up by those acres of gleaming white fibreglass. And of course, for every boat show enthusisast, there are plenty more for whom boats and the water are where they make their living – so for these lucky people, SCIBS is a place of business. But whether drifting or making deals, there is just so much going on, in and around the marine extravaganza known as SCIBS, so it can pay to arrive armed with a plan. The scope and range of products on offer can be daunting to absorb and on the busier days, it is easy to be swept along in the crowd-driven current with little chance to focus on the task at hand. Naturally, it’s the boats that are the heroes of the show and this is where you can admire new releases from your favoured builders or spot something completely different. Cast your eyes over the At The Marina section in this Yearbook, starting on page 40, for a quick taste of what you’ll find on the docks.
CONSIDER YOUR NEEDS
TOP: The gates are open. Boat Show time is here! FAR LEFT: Rose and Stefan representing Stefan Boating World. LEFT: Duncan, Sam and Egilk of Fleming Yachts on board Belle Epoque.
Think about what you want to achieve in boating and where you plan to go? Are you searching for that elusive do-it-all first boat, or maybe you’re upgrading to a larger size with long voyages in mind? Perhaps it’s just a new outboard required? Whatever your purpose, try to narrow down the parameters and approach your journey around the Show with a single-minded focus. The rewards will be worth it! Consider also, that any investment made in conjunction with a visit to the Show – be it a boat or marine hardware – is likely to be significant, so you will want to be happy with the purchase for a decent period of time before needing to upgrade. But don’t forget that SCIBS also presents an opportunity to form relationships with key industry people who may be both initially helpful in your search for knowledge and influential down the track as your seafaring life develops. Good contacts are gold and SCIBS is a great opportunity to find them.

PLAN YOUR SHOW
LIST HOT ITEMS Prepare a draft list of items or boats you are likely to be interested in. Then use the Exhibitors List (on page 100) in this Yearbook, to prepare a schedule of stands displaying the goods in question. If it’s a certain brand you’re after, that’s covered too. Check out the Brand Directory (on page 115) to find your favourites. But don’t discount all the similar options. You might be surprised by the various latest releases or specials on offer.
TWO FULL DAYS History will tell us the first two days of the Show are the best for serious attendees. The crowds are generally smaller before the weekend hits, allowing exhibitors more time to properly explain the merits of their products. It’s all about making contacts, remember? But even on the quieter days there is still too much to see in one visit, so take your time. It’s very easy to get caught on the marina for hours admiring all that is new and shiny. So set aside an extra day to get the job done properly. You don’t want to miss anything. And what’s the rush? SCIBS is all about having fun. Take the time to understand each vessel thoroughly, so you come away with the big picture
ARRANGE SEA TRIALS

Any really great boat is made up of a terrrfic collection of small details. It’s all those little things which the best boatbuilders do, that make all the difference. And these won’t all become immediately apparent during your on-site Boat Show inspection. What you can expect is a little taster of what that boat can offer you. So be prepared to set time aside down the track for a proper sea trial. This need not be about taking on the biggest waves you can find (although this can be useful if the opportunity arises). Your sea trial is really about spending an extended period on the vessel and becoming better acquainted with the boat and those people who know her best – the boatbuilders. If you’re unsure about what comprises a quality build, don’t be afraid to hire an independent expert to help you asses your potential purchase.
FINAL ADVICE Above all else, enjoy yourself. Soak up the atmosphere, dine in style and plan a few extra things to do aside from the Show. The more engaging the entire experience turns out to be, the more comfortable you will feel about any serious purchase arising from it.
Witness the bravery, beauty and courage of Australia’s spectacular new live arena show with 3 course dinner & drinks. Don’t miss the stars of the show at the 2015 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

Unwind at home ADAM SCOTT HAS FOUND A RARE SANCTUARY FROM THE DEMANDS OF THE PROFESSIONAL GOLF TOUR
T
ravelling on the professional golf circuit exposes players and their families to luxury locations all over the world. For Adam Scott however, it was Sanctuary Cove on Queensland’s beautiful Gold Coast that captured his dominant eye. We were recently fortunate enough to catch up with Adam, who is currently the No.5 world-ranked golfer, and a man who has called Sanctuary Cove home for more than 10 years. As a junior golfer, Adam aspired to play The Pines at Sanctuary Cove, and it was from here that his strong emotional connection to the region grew, eventually becoming a reality that surpassed just playing The Pines, but also becoming an active part of The Marine Village community. This was also a family affair from the beginning – Adam’s parents have lived at Sanctuary Cove for 10 years themselves. “I already knew about the attributes on offer – the gated community, security personnel, facilities at the village, wildlife and use of buggies makes for an easy and convenient lifestyle,” Adam told us. Just like that famous flow and ease of motion in his winning swing, Adam regularly mentions the total ease of living at Sanctuary Cove. “It is nice to have our office in the village, and to have everything in the one destination makes it easy,” he said. “Whilst it’s only a small office, it allows for a nice working environment for my team and is very convenient to home. “The Adam Scott Foundation is also based here and it is great to have the students under our scholarship program able to drop in. “Being situated mid-way between Brisbane and the Gold Coast is a great advantage. The programs include the PGA International Golf Institute which is based at Sanctuary Cove as well, so it is well situated all around.” The Adam Scott Foundation is this champion player’s way of supporting the community by sponsoring junior golfers and giving back to a course that meant a lot to him in his early years. But just when we were thinking it seemed like all business for Adam Scott when he’s home, he also mentioned his interest in the marine scene. “I previously owned a boat – now sold – which was moored at Sanctuary Cove Marina. Again, convenient to home. Now I enjoy other people’s boats!” he laughed. Sanctuary Cove Harbour is located upstream on the Coomera

Top: Two world-class golf courses offer a challenge for all levels - dawn is a favourite tee-off time for many. Above: Lunch over the marina with Andrew.
Adam Scott is never against a game of golf with friends and family while he’s home, but surfing on nearby beaches is also a favoured option for this Sanctuary Cove resident.
River, amid native Australian bushland and features four man-made harbours. Boasting direct access to the Broadwater and the Pacific Ocean via the Gold Coast Seaway, the boat havens of South Stradbroke Island, Wavebreak Island and the waters north to Moreton Bay are all part of this prolific playground, making it ideal for avid boaters. So what does the first Aussie to win the US Masters do in order to wind down when he’s home? Surf and turf, of course. Oh, and some more golf… “I don’t need to get away from the golf course when I’m home, just the tournaments,” Adam said. Playing golf against his mates (and mum and dad) helps provide a welcome mental break from the pressures of competition. When ranking Sanctuary Cove’s famous golf courses he said: “They are nice and enjoyable to play, it’s a great feature to have the 36 holes.” A little-known fact is that Adam’s love for surfing is on par with golf, and he’s quite happy to trade his back-swing for a cutback whenever he can get to the beach. “Surfing provides most of my enjoyment when I am away from golf,” he said. “Although I don’t get a chance to do it much, just thinking about being on the water helps me wind down.” Currently mid-way through the competitive US Tour, Adam and his wife Marie spent three months home at the Cove during the Christmas break – a welcome departure from the pressures of tournament golf after a season in which he reached No.1 in late May last year. Being on the road all year, Adam regularly finds himself eating at one restaurant after another, so he prefers to try some home-cooking when back at Sanctuary Cove. But he’s not against a quick takeaway fix from the Thai House, or a long lunch of grilled Moreton Bay bugs with the office team at George’s Paragon. And Adam’s secret spot? He alternates between Raw Kitchen & Espresso and Café Nineteen when catching up with friends for Sunday breakfast. As an architect, Adam’s wife Marie was fascinated with the concept of

“AS A JUNIOR GOLFER, ADAM ASPIRED TO PLAY THE PINES AT SANCTUARY COVE”
Sanctuary Cove. And unlike the game of golf, there is no competition for development at Sanctuary Cove. There is no other development in Australia which compares and it seems unlikely anyone else is going to build a gated community, complete with golf courses, private marina, village, and a hotel, close to train stations, two airports, beaches and a major city, any time soon. More than a quarter of a century after establishing the estate, this iconic project retains both strong brand recognition and a prestigious reputation. Now developers Mulpha are set to release the last of the waterfront and golf frontage blocks. They’ve clearly saved the best for last, including the most sought-after waterfront land blocks with wide canals and golf course blocks fronting The Pines. The Marine Village is bustling, with a waiting list for commercial tenancy, and has undergone a huge update in the past 24 months with four new restaurants opening, including one on the water, overlooking the marina. “The additions to the Village has made a great difference,” Adam said. “To be able to jump in your buggy and go to the supermarket – once again it’s too easy!” “We are also fortunate to have a medical centre, chemist and post office, which provides many of the services we regularly need.” For Adam Scott, Sanctuary Cove is a place to rest and regroup – something that has become undervalued in today’s culture. Sanctuary Cove offers that special blend of lifestyle which lightens the demands of modern society and everyday living, by providing a community where everything is quite literally on your doorstep.

Visit the Maverick Yachts display on Marina E, or go to maverickyachts.co.za
Custom boatbuilders Maverick Yachts, will be launching the Maverick 440 catamaran at this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Maverick Yachts was started by sailors Rudi and Deslynn Pretorius. “Our dream was to enjoy extended bluewater cruising without relying on a crew,” Deslynn said. “We needed to build a cruising catamaran – a yacht that could be handled effortlessly and that offered genuine five-star comfort, safety and reliability.” Expert designer Phil Southwell and a team of
skilled craftsmen came onboard to create this vision, and the Maverick 400 was the result. Following the success of the Maverick 400, the Maverick 440 has been created – a natural progression to a larger boat with larger transoms which are fantastic swim platforms, incorporating storage and increasing the waterline length, which results in faster boat speeds and a smoother ride. Maverick’s attention to detail and inherent understanding of yacht design guarantees the owner superb handling and performance from the Maverick catamaran – an ultra-deluxe home on the sea.

Sleek Hanse versatility The Windcraft Group was founded by Peter Hrones in the 1990s, at a time when he felt Australia lagged behind Europe in boat design. Hrones travelled to Europe in his quest for the perfect yacht to suit the Australian market, and after an 18 month search, he discovered Hanse Yachts. This year the Windcraft Group will be showcasing the stunning Hanse 575 at SCIBS. The Hanse 575 is a sleek and stunning Judel/Vrolijk yacht with an outstanding cockpit, revolutionary dinghy garage and contemporary, versatile interior. The 575 features the Hanse original self-tacking headsail, and all lines are led under the deck to the winches next to the helm position. The fully battened main sail also has an option of a furling main, while the double cockpit tables can convert to a huge sun lounge area. Continuous bulwarks further add style and safety to the vessel.
At the stern there is a large opening bathing platform for easy access before and after swimming, and a dinghy garage designed for a Williams 285 jet tender, with docking system. The low-profile coachhouse and deck are fitted with flush opening hatches, bringing light and ventilation to the interior. Check out the spectacular Hanse 575 at The Windcraft Group’s stand at the 2015 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

If fishing is what floats your boat, then you won’t want to miss Fishing and Leisure Boats’ launch of the new range from Tracker Boats. Tim Stessl, dealer principal at Fishing and Leisure Boats, says the Tracker range is among the most popular in the world and with good reason. “We are going to have three or four of the new Tracker range launching at the 2015 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and we will also be launching the Nitro Fibreglass Bass Boats as well,” he said. “People are going to love them. The Trackers can
comfortably take four or five adults. The 20° vee-hull and longitudinal stringer system means they are really stable and soft riding as well, and they have a five year warranty – the only alloy boat on the market with this. “And the company has invested about $12million into its new Diamond Coat paint system which is guaranteed to last ten times longer than your standard paint system,” said Mr Stessl. Check out Tracker range at the 2015 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.
Ready to fall in love? SUNDANCE MARINE Monte Carlo MC5
Visit the Sundance Marine display on Marina F, or go to sundancemarine.com.au
Sundance Marine is the national dealer for powerboat brands Monte Carlo by Beneteau and the Italian designed and built Monte Carlo Yachts. At SCIBS 2015, the Monte Carlo MC5 will make her Queensland debut. The Monte Carlo MC5 has unique charm and style. It is a splendid thoroughbred; a timelessly elegant distinctive yacht. Easily identified by the aqua blue hull, each Monte Carlo yacht offers stylish leather trims throughout and a clever use of internal space in all areas. Rewards for owners are obvious, through the excellent storage proportions across the boat, including its full-beam master. These features all enhance the MC5’s ability to be used for multiple days away from port. The flybridge comfortably seats 12 around the table, leaving no doubt on this yacht’s entertainment potential. The Monte Carlo MC5 was named European Powerboat of the Year in 2014 for “Motorboats Over 45ft”. So as the only Monte Carlo currently in Australia, and with the colour of that hull, she’s sure to make quite a splash at SCIBS.

The history of Palm Beach Motor Yachts has been written on the open ocean in racing yachts. Mark Richards’ passion for designing, building and racing sailing yachts at sea forged the culture that drives Palm Beach Motor Yachts and its team to build the very best pleasure boats available. At this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, Palm Beach Motor Yachts will be showcasing two of its most popular models, the Palm Beach 45 and Palm Beach 55. Each Palm Beach yacht is meticulously created, with modern technology and craftsmanship perfectly intertwined. The interior décor, accented by an expanse of Burmese teak,

is complemented by fine leather upholstery, solid Silestone counter tops and custom carpet, all created to the highest standards. Large powered windows on both sides retract to provide fresh air and also come in handy during docking. State of the art entertainment components, including TV and multi-speaker stereo are all included as standard equipment and customised to suit each individual owner. The PB 55 comes with a two or three cabin layout and rear tender garage, and the PB 45 was developed from the mould of the popular PB 50 in response to client requests for a lower priced, entry-level boat with more contemporary styling and family-focused robust finishes.

Garmin Reactor Autopilot and Sonar Module
GHP REACTOR AUTOPILOT & GSD 25 PREMIER SONAR MODULE Visit the Garmin display in Pavilion A, or go to garmin.com/en-AU
Garmin will launch two exciting products at SCIBS 2015 – the newly developed GHP Reactor Autopilot series and the new GSD 25 premium sonar module. The GHP Reactor Autopilot series is the most responsive autopilot system for powerboats and sailboats yet offered by Garmin, and its first recreational autopilot to utilise an Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS). Advanced nine-axis AHRS solid-state gyro technology allows the GHP autopilot to be mounted nearly anywhere, in any orientation, with minimal setup time, while greatly minimising heading
error, course deviation, rudder movement, and power consumption. Expect a smoother and more comfortable ride for all on board. The new GSD 25 premium sonar module combines traditional sonar, dual-channel 1kW CHIRP, plus DownVü and SideVü scanning sonar into one unit, eliminating the need for multiple black boxes. The result is a clear and comprehensive view of what’s below and beside your boat. The remote network solution provides premium fishfinding and bottom tracking capabilities, using detailed images to identify baitfish or target fish to depths beyond 1500m.
Depth Logistics Shipping Index Widely considered the nationally-recognised barometer of the health of the mining and construction sector, the Depth Logistics Shipping Index has been expanded to cover import trends for the marine industry and will be launched at SCIBS this year. The Depth Logistics Shipping Index focuses particularly on yachts and other marine vessels. It provides a practical visual infographic style guide, including graphs and a commentary, to allow both local manufacturers and businesses to easily interpret trends affecting their industry, and their market sector.

T
he Fleming 55 is a ‘passagemaker’. Don’t you just love that term? It conjures up images of luxury yachts cruising the Caribbean, extended sojourns through the icy waters of Alaska, losing yourself amongst an array of tropical islands and atolls, or intercontinental voyages across vast untamed oceans. Passagemakers define a nautical mindset achieved by many sea-dogs once they mature past the glitz and glamor of gizmos, gadgets and plastic fantastics. This is the real world of ocean cruising where 8-10kts is a practical speed and the ‘journey’ is the pleasure. It’s about confidence in your boat to challenge long passages, the seamanship to make the trip alluring to all, and the comfort and facility for the final destination. The Fleming 55 has all of these qualities. It was born a generation ago in the heady era of the mid-1980s. Since then there have been over 230 boats built and delivered and while the timeless design and character has been steadfast, the boats themselves have made rapid progress in technological advances, customer service and indeed fashion. Personally, I find it hard to fully evaluate such a complex machine in a single day, yet the basics are blatantly obvious. There’s premium fittings and craftsmanship around every corner. Put simply, from the seabed up she’s a beautiful hull, with the body to match. Young girls certainly hold fascination, but it’s the mature woman that has the confidence and style to become the ultimate diva.
BUCKET LIST Richard Rains is an unlikely boat owner, and yet his beloved Fleming 55 is the fulfillment of one of his life’s dreams. He’s a country boy from Dunedoo, a small town east of Dubbo, and refers to it as “the town they left the ‘R’ off …” He’s been in the international food trade for the greater part of his life with a particular emphasis on exporting meat products; hence he’s more than familiar with dealing on an international level. Fleming’s foundations are multinational. Tony Fleming is an Englishman who lives in America and worked for over 20 years with Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2015

American Marine and Grand Banks. In 1985 Tony left with his business partner Anton Emmerton and commissioned Californian naval architect Larry Drake to design a premium pilothouse passagemaker which evolved into the Fleming 55. They chose the Tung Hwa boat yard in southern Taiwan as their manufacturing facility, a relationship which exists until this very day. The boat’s name, Post Office, should be pronounced with a definite gap between the words ‘post’ and ‘office’, thus meaning ‘after retirement.’ Richard has retired to Sydney’s North Shore and keeps his pride and joy at the pretty little inner suburban marina at Kirrabilli. The new Sydney Harbour mooring has opened up some new activities and destinations: “I can walk for a couple of minutes to the east and jump on a ferry into town, have a meal or a social drink at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron just to the west, or invite a crew down for a sunset cruise and stay comfortably on the boat due to the three large staterooms and two bathrooms. “The kids just love it, as will my new grandchild” he said proudly. “I’m still on a number of Boards and hence have regular meetings in the CBD, so the boat and its central mooring provide multi-purposes.” Richard does not aspire to any larger vessel in the future; he loves the classic style and doesn’t need to go any faster. The Fleming has the safety, the comfort, the passagemaking ability, yet can be easily handled alone.
Opposite: Be it a Sydney Harbour cruise, or the far reaches of the Whitsundays; the Fleming takes it all in its stride.
From the deep, fully enclosed keel to the peak of the hard top the construction is spectacular. She’s a full fibreglass laminate with twin 500hp Cummins QSC 8.3lt, six-cylinder common rail, turbocharged and after-cooled four-stroke diesels with Twin Disc MG5075A, 2.53:1

transmissions powering the shaftdrives. All up she weighs in at a considerable 36-tonnes wet with a huge 3785lt of fuel in four tanks, 1135lt of freshwater and 378lt of blackwater capacity. Fleming hasn’t stopped at mere fit-out and weight to ensure maximum comfort and efficiency. The drive system is as smooth as her classy mouldings with oversized Silent Block engine mounts and Seatorque BOSS totally enclosed, oil-filled, shaft and thrust bearing assembly that greatly reduces engine vibration. They also offer perfect engine alignment and variable angle adjustment for vibration-free power transmission. The whole propulsion system is so well balanced that I could easily turn the Aqualloy 2.25in prop shafts and ZF-Faster four-blade nickel aluminum bronze propellers with one hand from the engine bay. There has been a tremendous attention to acoustics with very high quality acoustic lining and well-considered airflows adding to the overall construction quality, resulting in one of the quietest and most pleasant on-water experiences imaginable without going electric. One of the changes since previous testing of a Fleming a couple of years ago, is the upgrading of the hydraulically operated stabilisers to ABT-TRAC 7.5ft2 models with fins, winglets and color touchscreen control panel. The ride is also aided by a set of Bennett trim tabs. Sydney Harbour is full of all manner of fast moving, larger vessels including the ever-present ferry systems and hence there always seems to be a considerable wake to contend with. BOAT REVIEW
Top: The galley is adjacent, well-equipped, and easily accessible from both the saloon and downstairs accommodation. Above (L-R): Quality finish continues through the double bunk cabin; and the twin-berth; two sturdy 500hp Cummins diesels power the Fleming
with the open ocean under North Head certainly didn’t change things. The surefootedness is aided considerably by these big stabilisers, commonly used on much larger vessels up to 80ft (24.3m). Stabilisers normally don’t have much influence at very low speeds yet these noticeably aid the stability right down to 5kts. This is a true passagemaker, with a very confident ride. I asked Richard of his future seagoing ambitions and he told me that he would love to take Post Office around the top of the country and over to Broome. The vessel won’t take him long to master and certainly has the capacity, with the quoted cruising range of 2000nm at 8kts. Factory testing presents very efficient fuel consumption figures of only 43lt/h at 10kts, and we experienced 30lt/h at 9kts on the Harbour. She has achieved the international CE Category A Ocean certification for 15 passengers offshore and 22 in enclosed waters.
LATEST ELECTRONICS On advice from Fleming, Richard chose predominantly Raymarine electronics throughout the boat including a pair of gS series touchscreen multi-function displays both in the wheelhouse and on the flybridge. They clearly display the latest in sonar and navigation information as well as autopilot, radar, extra keypads, the FLIR night vision and CCTV from four cameras keeping the skipper informed of all movements around the boat. Fleming has defied many trends by choosing Boning 8.8in color touchscreen glass displays at both upper and lower stations for real-time engine information, and Fleming Central monitoring system for the whole boat as standard equipment. The array of electronics and accessories is endless but a noteworthy option is the five-function Yacht Controller wireless remote that operates the engines fore and aft, Side-Power thrusters and windlass for very easy docking and mooring control. When it’s time to relax there is interactive Bose and Fusion sound which is also linked to the custom pop-up television that is located in the rear saloon cabinet. the four separate icemakers, individually specified by Richard. “A man’s got to keep his drinks chilled” he declares with a smile and a wink. Powering the craft is a pair of Onan generators; a 13.5kW, 60Hz Onan eQD with a 9.5kW, 50Hz in reserve. In fact almost everything on Post Office has been doubled as a failsafe. Besides the generators there’s two windlasses, a backup unit for the Hypromarine hydraulic power steering, engine and gearbox control backups, multiple sets of safety equipment including four EPIRBs, multiple icemakers, fuel tanks, engine controls and more. There’s dual heat detectors, two engineroom extraction blowers, two Gianneschi freshwater pumps, four fire-retardant FRP fuel tanks with sight gauges and so on. Noteworthy inclusions in the fitout are the extra control station from the rear of the flybridge deck, a Reverso 24v fuel transfer/ polishing system, Sea Vision LED underwater lights, efficient LED lighting throughout and a fire suppression system with automatic engines/ genset/blowers shutdown. There are also VHF radios with AIS vessel tracking and identification, and even a Swift 3.6 Mirage tender with 40hp Yamaha four-stroke engine (Fleming Australia is also the Swift agent).

From the moment you step aboard from either of the two side companionways on upper or lower decks you will immediately be delighted with the endearing flow throughout all of the individual components of the boat. FLEMING 55
“THE FLEMING 55 HAS BEEN IN PRODUCTION FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS AND IS STILL POPULAR, ELEGANT, ATTRACTIVE AND PERHAPS EVEN MORE RELEVANT THAN EVER” Above: Home away from home – in comfort and style.
58
The teak trim will leave you speechless; the joinery is faultless. The stateroom size and layout is eminently comfortable and inviting, the two bathrooms, fittings, lighting and storage simply exceptional. I particularly loved the pilothouse with its vision and dash layout reminiscent of a much larger vessel. The small pilothouse dinette gives interested passengers a comfy and secure spot to join the skipper. The Portuguese bridge out front really sets the scene for forward passage, and the immense foredeck could hold a large party in its own right, all confined by the security of strong and tall stainless steel rails that will even keep parents reassured over their children’s safety. I could spend many an enjoyable hour or 10 with a group of friends on the huge rear deck under the shade of the extended hardtop; or perhaps move the party upstairs for a better view and a bit more open air. The only limited space is inside the engine compartment where headroom is a bit limited, but for very good reason. Fleming has designed in a low centre of gravity to increase the safety and stability, the tradeoff for which is low head clearance in the engineroom. Whilst you may have to duck your head a bit, once inside, you will quickly forget the inconvenience as you notice the quality of installation of all of the componentry including the engines, generators, fuel systems, and all of the colour-coded electrical circuits and general plumbing. It’s little wonder that this same Fleming 55 has been in production for nearly 30 years and it is still popular, elegant, attractive and perhaps even more relevant than ever. When I recently asked a friend how he was keeping active and occupied in his retirement, he said: “You know what, mate, there’s not a rule in the book that says you have to go to the bank, and the post office all on the same day!” Exactly. If Post Office were mine I wouldn’t be visiting a bank too often either – they’d be much too far away!

I
t’s not every day you get the chance to step on board a new boat brand in Australia – especially one which has launched into the competitive top end of the market, squaring off against longestablished names in the boatbuilding industry. What’s more, these brave souls have chosen to undertake their luxury project on our own fair shores, rather than use some cheap overseas labour hub. This was going to be interesting. Since first joining Trade-a-Boat’s motley band of pirate scribes in 2012, I’d heard whispers of the Elandra launch and had been following the tale with interest. Men after my own heart they were – meeting the establishment head on and developing their own innovative take on a luxury cruiser without being bound by staid traditions. The fact it was being done using skilled Aussie labour, while so many manufacturers were looking increasingly to Asia, made the project even more extraordinary.
A FRESH APPROACH But who are these blokes? Managing director Luke Durman and designer Tom Barry-Cotter both spent time at Maritimo before forging their own path, while operations manager Grant Senior cut his teeth at Formula Cruisers in New Zealand. The trio saw a niche in the market for low volume production of very high quality vessels, and in 2012 launched the Elandra name. Tom’s experience as an industrial designer saw him tasked with the exterior styling, while he and Luke collaborated with interior designer Jan Cormie on the contemporary look that defines the inside of this yacht. Grant meanwhile, crunched the numbers on hull design and weight studies which produced the 53’s tough lightweight hull, creating the balance of power versus efficiency that the team had sought. What lay waiting for us at the dock was a sleek sedan-style sportsyacht, offering 55ft (16.7m) of single-level luxury and enormous interior volume for her length. Recent launches from the likes of Riviera, Maritimo and Integrity suggest the single level sedan is what people want right now, so Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2015

Right: Outdoor dining as the sun sets? Elandra has captured that elegant, relaxed feel sought by Aussie boat owners. Below: Quality engineering abounds.
Elandra’s market research appears to be bang on. Of course, this counts for nothing if your product doesn’t cut it. But gleaming metallic paint and a modern, angular profile is just what you’d expect at this end of the market – the 53 is certainly a headturner.

Luke Durman helped explain the principles behind Australia’s newest luxury motoryacht. “We coined the phrase ‘inshore elegance, offshore attitude’ as the motto for the company and that’s driven everything we’ve done in this boat,” he said. “We wanted to produce something very smooth-riding and with unrivalled performance – not just in terms of fuel efficiency, but in terms of top end speed and seaworthiness as well. “So ‘inshore elegance’ refers to the best of what Europe and the British have to offer in terms of interior styling, but with a flavour better suited to Down Under boating, and done in an elegant understated style.” On this first point it seems they’ve hit the mark nicely. American walnut features extensively throughout the 53, but laid with an unusual horizontal grain running uninterrupted along the panels and highlighted by shadow lines – reverse mouldings routed into the wood to break up the eye. This dark timber in matt varnish is complemented by lighter Ultraleather panels and roof liners throughout, including the rear lounge where wet bather bottoms might plant themselves occasionally. Adding to the fresh appearance is a terrific sense of space created by the open saloon and helm layout.
OFFSHORE POISE So back to the brief. Having confirmed the understated elegance of the interior, how ‘bout that attitude? Leaving the speed limited zone of the Broadwater, our skipper eased the throttles forward and a promising whine accompanied a surge in power as we swept through the Seaway. Under the floor, two 800hp MAN

THE FACT SUCH A WELL-CONCEIVED PRODUCT WAS PRODUCED LOCALLY IS ESPECIALLY COMMENDABLE. AS A LUXURY POWERBOAT, IT’S CLEVER, MODERN AND ELEGANT, AND ONE WE CAN ALL BE PROUD OF. Above right: Trimmed in Ultraleather Pony fabric, the twin Stidd chairs and matching dash create an enjoyable spot to helm from, and 16in Simrad screens make it easy.
R6 engines effortlessly drove us seaward, assisted by a ZF gearbox linked to oversized 2.75in shaftdrives. Like any legitimate speed machine, the Elandra 53 gives a sensation of travelling much more slowly than you truly are, so it wasn’t long before we were pushing 30-plus knots in a gentle swell. Acceleration was barely noticeable as the fine bow entry cut through the waves and she felt solid at the wheel. The brief to create a genuine seagoing motoryacht requires walking a fine line between strength and weight and Luke explained this required plenty of late nights puzzling over hull structure, engine choice and shaft angles, right down to the choice of propellers. The net result also had to be more fuel efficient than her competitors. “When we were designing the hull, we set some parameters for ourselves that it had to be eight to nine per cent more efficient than any shaft-driven boat on the market of comparable size,” Luke said. “They’re some big statements to make, because eight to nine per cent improved efficiency is quite a large amount, but from the data we’ve seen, in some rev ranges, it’s 15 per cent better.” A significant part of this equation can be attributed to the hull lay-up which sees three layers of quadraxial E-Glass reinforced with Kevlar. Hand-rolling allows Elandra to achieve a glass-to-resin ratio of around 50:50, resulting in a very lightweight but incredibly strong running surface. Absolute belief in this system has seen the company offer a four year ‘stem to stern’ warranty on workmanship and a 10 year warranty on the hull – that’s confidence in your product.
INSPIRED SMARTS Another feature which sets the Elandra 53 apart is the clever use of technology. Sure, there’s all the latest hi-tech gear at the helm, but what’s more impressive is the way these components manage the yacht. Sitting alongside twin 16in Simrad NSO Evo multifunction touchscreens on the Ultraleather-wrapped dash is a compact BEP CZone Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2015

unit. Despite a modest appearance, this baby’s the heart of the Elandra – in combination with twin 3.5kW Mastervolt inverters, CZone controls the entire boat’s electrical systems. It’s this sort of systems integration that makes the Elandra an easy boat to spend time on. The living spaces only further this notion. To port of the twin Stidd helm chairs is a plush couch for keeping the captain company, while he or she gets on with the serious job of steering. But should the skipper require a snack, the galley is just steps away. Plus, when you’re done driving, the helm chairs swivel 180-degrees to meet the galley bench and create the world’s most comfortable bar stools. It would also be remiss of me at this point to gloss over the trim at the helm. Because it’s awesome. The Elandra crew chose an Ultraleather fabric dubbed ‘Pony’ to trim the Stidd chairs and dash surrounds and it’s best described as synthetic rawhide. Below decks, you begin to get a true sense of how much living space has been created within the Elandra. In the bow is the VIP, with an offset island bed that could easily serve as a master cabin. There are portlights on both sides and the mattress lifts on gas rams for easy storage beneath. The VIP shares access to the forward head with a double bunk cabin and on this debut model, there’s a washer and dryer fitted in the wardrobe of this starboard side accommodation. Step down again and you reach the full-beam master, with a generous bed located on the centreline and bathroom to port. A clever ‘open vanity’ creates a spacious cabin, but with the necessary doors for privacy when required. The seashell mosaic tiles are a highlight here, as are the full-length windows on each side of this lavish space.
IN THE GARAGE Given Australia’s favourable boating climate, it’s the outdoor areas that will see the most action and here Elandra has created further memorable spaces. The extended hardtop provides shade over much of the aft deck, where there’s room for six to eight people to enjoy meals at the adjustable teak table. Tucked into the barbecue station on starboard, there’s also an

Elandra Yachts has chosen SCIBS 2015 to unveil plans for its next model, the Elandra 47 Sport Yacht. Development is already underway at the Arundel yard on the Gold Coast, with the Elandra 47 scheduled for release mid-2016. “It will follow similar lines to the Elandra 53,” managing director Luke Durman explained. “It will feature all the engineering prowess, shaftdrive performance and the same level of finish that has led to the success of the Elandra 53.” The three-cabin Elandra 47 will boast two spacious queen staterooms, a full-beam master with private ensuite, a forward guest cabin with shared ensuite and a bunk cabin on starboard. Just as the Elandra 53 won acclaim for its inviting open-plan layout, the design of the 47 is in the same vein, with expansive bifold doors that open up to engage the cockpit with the galley and saloon. The cockpit has been designed with no loss of space or features from the Elandra 53, and the aft cockpit lounge can be set up as dinette or coffee table at the push of a button. The aft garage accessed from the swim platform lifts up to unearth a cavernous quick specs lazarette for inflatables, kayaks, fishing gear, dive equipment or additional Elandra 47 freezers. LENGTH 15.2m The driveline is direct shaft with a BEAM 4.95m low 10° shaft angle, coupled to a pair of WEIGHT (dry) 18,700kg 600hp diesel engines as standard, with FUEL 2500lt an option for 675hp available. A 15kVa WATER 750l generator provides ample power.

icemaker, sink and bar fridge, making it simple to play host. And a pair of glass cockpit gates keep the kids safe while underway, or during tender launching operations. Wait – tender? What tender? Yep, below the aft deck is a cavernous garage capable of housing a Williams 285 jetboat or similar. Not too many 60ft sports yachts offer that handy feature, let alone single-level 55 footers. It’s a real testament to the design team that they were able to provide the convenience of a tender garage and submersible swim platform – it will make life immeasurably easier for owners. Down on the swim platform, there’s a hot and cold shower, plus a stainless swimladder and the usual freshwater washdown fittings. Access to both the engineroom and lazarette lockers is through hatches on the aft deck and belowdecks you also find the emergency steering lock, ensuring the rudders can be held straight if the electric-hydraulic steering fails.
WORTH THE WAIT There’s been a lot of anticipation surrounding Elandra’s launch into the marketplace and for me, much of this related to how a new team might shake up the industry with some fresh thinking. As you can see from the photos, the results speak for themselves and any discerning buyer looking for a family-sized sedan-style yacht will certainly have to consider this newcomer. The fact such a well-conceived product was produced locally is especially commendable and while the overall impression is one of luxurious refinement, on closer inspection there’s also a myriad of tiny details that go into making the Elandra 53 greater than the sum of its parts. From features like recessed lighting under the cockpit steps, to the CZone integration, shadow lines in the cabinetry and even the clever pop-up light on the forward sunpad, this yacht simply bursts with inspired thinking from Luke Durman, Tom Barry-Cotter and Grant Senior. As a luxury powerboat, it’s clever, modern and elegant, but as a new Australian-made yacht, it’s one we can all be proud of.

t’s one thing to create something refined and beautiful but quite another to make that object conclusively functional. Without real functionality, even the most glamorous yacht simply becomes a onedimensional showboat. Superyacht design is littered with examples of this – glossy floating palaces which can’t go to sea in anything more than a stiff breeze and can’t carry enough fuel for voyages beyond a weekend getaway. But Horizon Yachts is no newcomer to this game. The company has been turning out ocean-going yachts from its Taiwanese yard since 1987 and CEO John Lu has led the charge that ensured Horizon Yachts is now counted among the world’s best luxury boat producers. Not surprising then, that the company’s latest (and largest) yacht sold into Australia represents an exquisite blend of both bold modern looks and unreserved functionality – a good thing, because boating in Western Australia (where this yacht is based) demands nothing less.
WEST OZ SPECIAL The RP110 stands for Raised Pilothouse and is an inspired evolution of Horizon’s successful P110 Tri-Deck, but featuring a broad hardtop where the Tri-Deck had a targa arch. This permanently-shaded retreat on the top deck of the aptly-named Paradise is the first hint of what reveals itself to be a carefully considered build, and a real product of her environment; chiefly because successful boating in WA requires a very different mindset. Sure, floating around Perth is easy enough – there’s not much more on offer than a quick blast across to Rottnest Island for the weekend and any vessel can do this, right down to the smallest trailerboat. But its exploration further afield that will really test both designers and yacht builders. The far north west of Australia’s coast is legitimately one of the last frontiers of wilderness exploration and while there are plenty of charter boats plying those waters these days, you can bet they’re not taking the mission lightly. Huge distances and a total lack of resupply options make boating in the Kimberley a pioneering experience. But that’s part of the appeal and just why owners of yachts like Paradise love going there. A journey north will certainly be on the itinerary for next winter, so careful thought must be given to how a yacht can not only get up there safely and return in one piece, but also, how to make the experience enjoyable (dare we say luxurious) for those lucky few who make the trip.
MODIFICATIONS That’s where Horizon’s team have outdone themselves with this yacht. Paradise represents a blend of the sublimely luxurious and the eminently practical, to present a truly complete yacht and one that lends itself to any Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2015

situation. But this didn’t just happen overnight. The relative proximity of Taiwan to Australia allowed the new owner and an experienced local team from Oceaneer Marine Brokers (WA-based preferred partner for Horizon Motor Yachts Australia) to make numerous trips to the factory during the two-year build process. The result is that while hull no.3 may look the same as the two RP110s that preceded her, Paradise is very much an Australian superyacht, with a host of changes to better suit local conditions. One of the most significant modifications is unseen, but has a major payoff. Below the waterline, the yacht’s keel has been extended downwards by 30cm along the length of the hull. This deeper keel will prevent the yacht swinging excessively while on anchor, a very real concern, given WA’s notorious sea breeze which regularly tops 30kts. Up forward, a pair of upgraded Muir VRC6000 windlasses paired with hulking 160kg Ultra anchors ensure that Paradise will stay where she’s put, regardless of how strongly that sea breeze might blow. I won’t go into the whole list of changes (it runs to 10 pages) but many of them are aimed at increasing the long-range capabilities of Paradise – items like a second Sea Recovery deasalinator, extra refrigeration and an onboard diesel bowser for refuelling tenders. What Horizon has done is create a highly-specialised vessel for use in a unique part of our island nation, but at the same time, a capable world cruiser. Let’s face it – if your yacht can take on the far reaches of WA with ease, then you’re unlikely to encounter too many problems elsewhere...
OWNERS’ TOUCH This subtle tweaking of existing Horizon designs is exactly how new HMYA owners Gary Wahlstedt and Matt Yapp aim to increase the brand’s appeal among Aussie boaters. On board Paradise for his first look at the

company’s biggest launch to date, Gary explained that he, Matt and two other HMYA team members had just returned from the Taiwan factory, where they’d looked over a V72, E84, and PC52 – all destined for new Aussie display stock at Sanctuary Cove. While inspecting the upper decks of the V72 and E84 in build, the team realised the entertaining needs of owners could be better served by removing the existing rear lounge and sunpads. Instead, in went a bar area, including fridges, icemaker, barbecue and bar stools. It’s this type of involvement with boat design at a grass roots level that has Matt and Gary (both Horizon owners themselves) so enthusiastic about their new role. “One of the main things that Matt and I and the rest of the team want to do, is spend a lot of time with the owners who use these boats and try to improve the design and build specs of each boat – moving toward what we want in Australia as standard features,” Gary said. “One of the most exciting things about this Horizon brand is talking to the skippers and the owners and then designing and improving every new boat that is built. “We have such an experienced team at Horizon who are all striving to continually grow and improve these products into far better boats for the future – it really is so exciting.”
EASY ENTERTAINER While voyaging to the far corners of Australia and beyond is a big part of the Paradise plans, entertaining closer to home is also a priority. And it’s hard to imagine a vessel better equipped for hosting elegant social gatherings. Guests have a choice of sprawling spaces in the saloon, the flybridge, or both, while the airy galley will let chefs work their magic in comfort. Given WA’s Mediterranean climate, it’s a safe bet most leisure time will be spent on the flybridge, especially following the addition of clears to exclude blustery winds. There are two vast lounges and a marble bar under the cover of the hardtop. Plus a teppanyaki barbecue. And did we mention the spa? You’d never leave.
STEP INSIDE As you walk through Paradise, South American walnut in a satin finish is widely used throughout the yacht, contrasting with white fabrics, and splashes of colour are thoughtfully placed. High gloss ebony shines from countertops and tables, and while these might keep the stewardess busy, a clever result sees the ocean’s colours Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2015

reflected back through the expanse of windows to vibrant effect. The accommodation stretches over two floors: master stateroom on the main deck, with guests and crew below. Downstairs from the saloon are four guest cabins – two doubles and two twins, meaning Paradise can house 10 guests, plus five crew. Each guest cabin has its own ensuite, the doubles also gaining walk-in robes and, like the rest of the yacht, the fittings are clean and contemporary – more urban than ornate. Notable in the guest level corridor (and on the forward wall of the saloon) is a striking “white coral” feature wall, of glossy textured acrylic. Above the dining table, a series of stainless orbs hang like mercury in zero-gravity to reflect light down onto the place settings. The enormous master suite is predictably sumptuous, with full-length picture windows, gorgeous Ultraleather bedhead, writing desk, pop-up TV and a downstairs bathroom with walk-in robes.
THE BEACH CLUB Delivered on the day of our test was a new Naiad jet tender for Paradise. The yacht’s hydraulic high-low swim-platform has been extended by 60cm to accommodate the 5.3m diesel RIB, which will be used mainly for short trips with guests or crew. With the platform lowered, crew attach custom chocks to the teak deck, and it’s a simple matter to dock the Naiad. But this zone is more than just a robust platform to transport the tender – with rails in place and the lazarette open, an enormous beach club is created, perfect for launching SCUBA missions, docking jetskis and a safe spot for children to frolic in the water with the platform lowered a couple of feet. I can also see it being employed as a comfortable water-level fishing platform with the boat on anchor up north (if you can deal with a bit of fish blood or squid ink splashed on the teak occasionally). On order is an even larger Naiad – another diesel number – but this one stretching to 10m and with an inboard engine, plus leg. Why diesels? Simply so that both tenders can be filled from the fuel bowser on the mothership, meaning there’s no need to carry extra fuel on long trips. A certain amount will still be required though, at least until someone invents a diesel jetski… The newest Naiad will be outfitted for sportsfishing, with an enclosed cabin, outriggers and all the fruit, and will likely be towed when the yacht travels long distances.
CREW QUARTERS Fortunately, the crew haven’t been forgotten in this equation, gaining one of the best-appointed crew areas I’ve seen on a yacht this size. There’s a

The captain will rest easy at anchor with a 12in Furuno MFD in his cabin to keep an eye on depth (and everything else), and there’s another Furuno repeater in the crew mess to monitor wind speed, for example. What I really liked was access to both the engine room and the lazarette from the crew mess, meaning the team can go about their duties without having to wander through busy guest areas. TAKE THE HELM As anyone who has ever taken the wheel of a boat will know, there’s steering and then there’s ... navigating. Just about any sailor can pilot a vessel downriver and weave through some channel markers, following the plotter to their favourite fishing spot. But if you’re travelling along thousands of miles of remote coastline toward coral-infested waters, some of which remain uncharted and are subject to the biggest tides on earth, well, you’d better know what you’re doing. It’s a very good argument for engaging professional crew, but it also doesn’t hurt to outfit those crew with every shred of information available to them. To a newcomer, the expanse of information can seem confusing, even excessive, but rest assured, each has a specific and vital role. No less than five colour screens stretch across the bridge of Paradise – systems monitoring, radar, navigation, sounder and FLIR thermal imaging. A new Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2015

one for me was the colour scanning sonar (usually found on commercial vessels) which uses a 3kW transducer to find schools of fish anywhere around the yacht, or to produce a 3D image of the seabed beneath. Captain Luke Tompsett also demonstrated an impressive feature of the MaxSea plotter, which allows him to download the latest weather information and overlay an animated display of the forecast wind speed and direction onto selected areas of the map. Behind the twin helm seats is a sumptuous crocodile leather lounge and flatscreen TV – probably not advisable while on passage, but no doubt handy for crew when called to participate in an ‘anchor watch.’ Yep, it’s a thing.
HEAD FOR THE HORIZON Boasting a displacement of 120 tons (light ship), you’d be forgiven for assuming Paradise would be a bit thirsty on fuel. What’s interesting is that the sleek hull design, combined with a pair of the latest Cat C32 ACERT engines, delivers surprisingly economical performance. At a long-range cruise speed of 8.5kts, the twin Cats swallow just 40lt/h for each engine. Top speed for the semi-displacement hull is a swellcrushing 20kts, gurgling a massive 385lt/h per engine, but owners of yachts like this rarely watch the fuel gauge too closely – they’re too busy having a ball. Distributed among three tanks is 21,000lt of fuel; more than enough to run from Fremantle to Bali and back again without visiting a fuel dock. Fresh water capacity is also impressive – around 3000lt – but this is supplemented by two watermakers which can each crank out more than 5000lt/day to keep the tanks full in remote areas.
THE WRAP Life onboard Paradise would be a fine thing indeed. Cocktail parties at anchor in glistening Thompson Bay one night, with the bright lights of Perth providing a sparkling backdrop … and then one week later, you could be anchored in the remote Abrolhos Islands, freediving for crays off the swimplatform or chasing gamefish beyond the reef. Fortunately, this is one superyacht that’s been conceived as a boat upon which people will be living, and often for weeks at a time. There’s everything you could ever wish for in a home away from home: outrageous comfort, modern technology, slick design and spaces to play. If only every home could be like this.

hen the Trade-a-Boat editor returned from the Gold Coast with tales of a new-look sedan cruiser from Integrity Motor Yachts, my hand shot up for the job. Not only would a Queensland test allow me to escape freezing Victoria for a few days, but Tim’s description of the 320 Express Sedan as “completely different from anything Integrity have done before”, sounded, well, a little intriguing. Brief though my experience of its yachts has been, the Integrity brand generally calls to mind solid and dependable displacement motor cruisers. Both the flybridge and sedan models will potter determinedly along our coastline for days, casting aside adverse sea conditions with barely a shrug, and reliably delivering their owners safely to the next port. All I knew about this latest release was that the hull featured a reworked version of Integrity’s popular 320 Sedan Cruiser. So it was going to be interesting to discover how managing director (and designer) Brett Flanagan had updated this popular model.
THE SUN ALSO RISES? My hopes of a lazy day spent mucking about on the Broadwater were off to a bad start when Brett announced plans for a sunrise photo shoot. I’d heard about sunrises, but hadn’t seen one in years and was disappointed to learn they take place at 4:45am in Queensland. After a 3am start, photographer Jack Murphy and I stumbled through the gloom onto the Sanctuary Cove dock and found ourselves onboard an Integrity yacht like no other. Through bleary eyes I could just about make out a light, modern interior, with none of the dark glossy teak that had characterised previous Integrity models such as the 380 Flybridge. Tall saloon windows also allowed what light there was to flood the interior, highlighting the fact I could not see a coffee machine fitted anywhere. I let out a scream and thought about deducting marks for this, then realised it might be unreasonable to hold Integrity to account for my own caffeine addiction. Pushing off from the dock was made simple by Quick thrusters at the bow and stern (an included option on this debut model). At 9.75m, the 320 Express isn’t an enormous vessel to manoeuvre, but given the shaftdrive setup, thrusters certainly assist during operations in close-quarters. As we headed for Jumpinpin and its photogenic sand dunes, it soon became apparent there was something wrong with the sunrise. Missing was that warm golden glow, so beloved of photographers and in its place was a bank of grey cloud. Dammit! Ever the versatile professionals, we abandoned the long trek north and settled instead for parading the new Integrity in front of South Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2015

INTEGRITY 320
Stradbroke’s tree-lined shores. When the almost-sun did finally rise, it cast a diffused light on the familiar sturdy lines of Integrity’s characteristic trawler-style hull, but in this case with a commanding, upswept bow, the result of adding around 300mm to the mould at the forward gunwales. This has created increased headroom belowdecks in the forward cabin, adding to an overall feel of space and light, in line with the modern feel of this latest vessel.
FRESH THINKING To truly appreciate what a departure the 320 Express is from previous Integrity builds, you need merely to compare this boat with its predecessor, the 320 Explorer. While also billed as an entry-level yacht, the Explorer was upright and boxy where the Express is curved and, dare we say it, better proportioned, the cabin sweeping back from that imposing bow. Even the windows look more modern, with angles that mirror the side decks and slick portholes set into the topsides. But it’s on the inside where the changes really hit home. Gone is the dark, traditional teak fitout. In its place, bleached American oak and Caesarstone benchtops combine for a look that’s more beach house chic than grandfather’s study. It’s lighter, brighter and unquestionably modern. And that’s no bad thing. While the move away from Integrity’s customary styling must have seemed a risky decision, national sales manager Peter Hill tells us they already have several orders on the books for the 320 Express. An appealing price point of $299,000 has much to do with this. The thinking behind this latest Integrity yacht was always to create an affordable family-sized vessel, suitable for overnighting and coastal

exploring. Of course to some, $300K might still sound like a lot of money, but in this case it buys you a lot of yacht, and a cleverly designed one at that.
Left: The aft deck is a great spot for socialising and links effortlessly with the galley via sliding glass doors.
WALK THE LINE
Top right: The stripped back helm references Integrity’s design ethos – eveything you need, and nothing you don’t.
The trick to creating a 32-footer (9.75m) that works both as a stylish dayboat and a comfortable weekender is a delicate balancing act of space and spaces – the aft deck needs room for relaxing at sundown; the galley must be well-equipped for knocking up a casual feast; the saloon requires scope to relax during inclement weather and the cabin should be welcoming, while hopefully offering alternative beds for unexpected guests. So have Integrity squeezed all these criteria on board? You bet, and all within a hand-laid hull that can take a punch, so you can set out for far off lands with confidence. Weighing in at some 7500kg displacement, this sedan is no lightweight. Thankfully, that over-engineered construction translates to a certain poise in an unruly ocean. As Brett remarked: “Other guys might go faster, but we can take ours anywhere.” Test day time constraints saw us unable to hit the Seaway, but given the Express Sedan shares hull DNA with the proven Explorer, it’s fair to assume performance offshore would be unruffled by a few ocean swells. The raised gunwales and walkways to the bow mean access around the boat is safe for owners and kids alike and it’s comforting to know that down below, a full keel protects the shaft and prop on every Integrity boat. Cruising down the Broadwater, the 320 Express Sedan felt assured and Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2015

unhurried, although the high-revving Steyr diesel occasionally gave the impression of a boat that should be travelling faster than the engine noise would account for. The 230hp Steyer is an upgraded option on this debut boat and this slick powerhouse delivers exceptional efficiency, burning a meagre 8.3lt/h at an optimum cruise speed of 7kts. At this rate, the 980lt tank will deliver in excess of an 800nm cruise range and that brings a wealth of destinations within reach. The standard engine fitout on the 320 Express is Integrity favourite, the 225hp John Deere, and while the Steyr does add to the price, it sure is a sweet piece of kit. Engine noise did encroach on the saloon as we crept up toward 12kts at Wide Open Throttle, but some additional engine room soundproofing would likely quell this distraction.
THE LIVING IS EASY Aft of the engineroom (and beneath an attractive teak deck sealed with white Sikaflex) there is a wide storage area for fenders, lines and other bulky goodies. The aft deck is a comfortable spot to relax with a central lounge and access to the teak-slat swimplatform through lockable gates. The hardtop extends over much of this area and camper covers could be added to enclose it for winter boating, but when the sun shines, there’s a flip-down swimladder plus a hot and cold shower for rinsing off. Step through the wide glass doors to the saloon and there’s acres of bench space, with a sink on port and a two-burner hob still to be fitted. The light Caesarstone benches make cleaning easy and there are drawers everywhere for stashing crockery, cutlery, glassware and more. Interestingly, while Integrity Yachts are built in China, appliances such as the 140lt Waeco fridge/freezer are all fitted locally to ensure both compliance and a lack of warranty issues. wood-look vinyl, this time in a pale, aged timber pattern which works well with the oak cabinetry. Opposite the helm, there’s a three-seater L-shaped lounge and the adjoining table can be doubled in size as required. Should your dinner guests need a nap, the table drops down to meet the cushions and form an extra bed – also perfect for kids. This entire saloon area enjoys wide open views from every angle thanks to the huge windows and this also benefits the captain while berthing or underway. The helm is beautifully simple, with a handful of analogue gauges, throttle, electronic engine monitoring, thruster controls and not much else. A large upright dash will easily accommodate modern widescreen electronics – just pick your brand and whack it in. Overhead, there’s a hatch for fresh air and Brett tells us he’ll also be installing sliding windows on both sides of the saloon in upcoming builds. It’s an easy, social position to steer from, in keeping with the current approach of a connection between galley, helm and saloon. Down four steps from the saloon and you’re into the forward cabin. The extra head height and a crafty design combine to make this space feel bigger than it really is, assisted by dual portlights and another glass hatch overhead. What first catches your eye is the semi-island bed in an unusual pentagon shape. This means owners can sleep facing the bow with an aft headboard to contain your collection of pillows. While the shape seems odd, it works well to provide extra space on either side of the occupants and means the bed can still be fitted right up in the bow. Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2015

Storage is once more in abundance, with lockers and drawers in every corner, while twin wardrobes are lined with cedar to repel critters that might chew holes in your navy blazer. By splitting the toilet and shower cubicles into separate compartments, Integrity has created capacity for full size facilities that don’t encroach unnecessarily into other areas of the yacht. There’s a toilet and vanity on port, with the roomy shower on starboard, where a tasteful panel of mosaic tiles breaks up the wall, above a teak slat floor.

While Integrity has successfully modernised one of its popular traditional designs with the 320 Express, the revamp has also created an appealing entry-level boat that will draw new buyers to the brand. First-time boat owners and families will particularly love the balancing act of space that has seen so much functionality shoehorned into 32ft of boat, the result of some clever design tricks. I’d say this new sedan would be among the biggest in its class internally; the result being that a couple or small family could confidently set off for a weekend or more in this pocket cruiser. Bringing it to market at $329,000 for the standard model does see this Integrity miss out on a few luxuries such as air-conditioning and generator, but it’s also not designed as a long-range superyacht. This is a dayboat you can overnight on, but with the build pedigree to handle trips further afield in comfort and safety, and as such, the Integrity 320 Express Sedan does its job very well.

here’s a real buzz around centre consoles at the moment and I think a lot of it has to do with the popularity of fishing with plastics. The extra fishing room makes it easier and safer for a crew to cast lures into fishy-looking water without fear of becoming entangled with each other or worse, skewering your mate with a razor-sharp treble. Centre consoles may lack the weather protection and extra safety when crossing bars, but used judiciously, they make a lot of sense as a fishing platform. Derek Rodway of Anglapro developed this range of compact aluminium boats six years ago and following great success with the estuary fishing range, he has responded to calls for something bigger with a set of offshore Predators including the centre console on test.
X-CORED The 16 is the smaller of two on offer and its tough build and aggressive look fits right in with the needs of dedicated fisher folk. It’s a hard-core fishing machine that makes the most of the available space without many concessions to cruising comfort. Both bottom and sides are built from 4mm aluminium with reversed chines pressed into in the rear two-thirds of the hull, while the underfloor section is engineered for strength with welded stringers and gussets in what Derek calls his X-Core construction. Sides are plate aluminium without the need for internal supports, so the boat is a combination of pressed and plate construction, giving strength and shape where needed. The floor is fully welded but because it is set low in the hull for maximum stability, it’s not self-draining. The sharply raked bow has moderate flare and runs to flatter sections amidships and a moderate 16° deadrise at the transom. An optional 50mm spray rail was fitted to the test boat and it did a good job of deflecting water down when underway, as can be seen in the accompanying photos. With a hull length of only 4.9m to play with the little Predator is all floor space, apart from the driving console, to maximise fishing room. Rising some 180mm the bow casting deck is surrounded by a rail and has neat carpet-lined storage hatches built in. An open anchorwell is easily reached and has plenty of room for rode and chain as well as a set of medium-sized sand and rock anchors. A stainless steel roller leads back to a single bollard aft of the well.
FISHING FOR ROOM Because the boat is ‘pure fishing’ it makes sense to sacrifice a helm seat for more room, especially considering that most skippers and passengers stand when travelling – but being a semi-custom boat, there’s an option to have a seat or leaning post fitted. At the transom, upholstered quarter seats each side have two sturdy legs for crew who want a rest or when trolling and because they fold down they don’t get in the way. Twin bait tanks sit in each corner of the transom and over the back there’s a boarding platform with a ladder that will be handy for divers and swimmers. Lest we offend plastic lure flickers, let’s call the substantial table a work station rather than, (quietly), a bait table. It’s well positioned in the centre, strongly mounted and has enough area to clean big fish, but I would have preferred to see some drain holes and tubes to clear any muck overboard. I did like the hinged cover below the table that hides the bilge pump and electrics. It keeps things tidy and stops fish flapping their way into the bilge while still allowing quick access for maintenance. Storage is good for a boat of its size and I particularly liked the large killtank in the floor towards the back of the boat. An underfloor fuel tank of 100lt should give exceptional range for the frugal Suzuki four-stroke. Despite its rough-and-tumble nature, the cockpit is neatly fitted out. Storage pockets extend along the sidedecks and the control lines for the engine are concealed behind a neat cover as they exit the gunwale to the console. Grey marine carpet over the floor can be easily removed for cleaning and add some welcome cushioning over the metal floor. Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2015

ANGLAPRO PREDATOR 16
BOAT REVIEW
HIGH POINTS Generous fishing room in a stable platform Great handling and soft ride Ample speed to get to your destination quickly
CENTRE BALANCE Centre consoles are not only an efficient use of space by offering allround angling room, they are also positioned well to balance the boat when underway (as opposed to a side console) and are far enough back from the bow to give driver and passengers a softer ride. The Predator’s unit is very well-built and the long grab rails look strong enough to take the weight of crew using it to sturdy themselves when underway in rough conditions. The simple dash layout is angled appropriately to keep the instruments in line of sight when driving and there is ample room for a large screen or two smaller ones. The test boat came with an optional Lowrance HDS-9 – certainly big enough for most people. To the right of the dash was a Lowrance VHF radio, with controls for the engine’s troll mode and trouble alarm set lower along with switches for lights and the bilge and bait pumps. Against the white of the console it looks clean and well laid out, although I would have preferred a darker matt finish to eliminate glare.
PRECISE POWER Suggested power for the Predator is between 90 and 115hp, so I anticipated the Suzuki 115 fitted to the test boat should be a feisty performer matched to the relatively lightweight hull. When I clicked into gear and planted the throttle my first impression was that a seat to lean against would have been a good idea because the boat accelerates very quickly and there’s only the steering wheel for the driver to hang onto. I found the dash-mounted throttle control a little awkward and it was easy to apply too much acceleration to the featherweight control when driving through rougher water – until I realised it made sense to rest my hand on the base for leverage. Doh! The four-stroke Suzuki is a torquey engine with plenty of grunt out of the hole and rapid acceleration right through the range to its maximum 6000rpm. Planing speed was around 13kts at a bit over 3000rpm and from there we quickly picked up momentum through to a slow cruise of 23kts where the boat felt very comfortable in the choppy conditions. Wide-open throttle was 6000rpm with a top end of 37kts, which is really

FACTS AND FIGURES ANGLAPRO PREDATOR 16 getting along for a 5m boat. At speeds over 30kts the boat feels light and nimble and after getting used to its handling, confidence grew and I was able to throw it around in fast turns, trusting that it would go where I wanted without any worries. It leans sharply into slower turns and as the chines dug in, I could find no slip or wallowing and no cavitation from the prop. There was enough swell to easily get the boat airborne with a blat of the throttle up the face of the waves and at no stage did we land with any undue jolts. Both in rougher water and back inside the bay the boat handled impeccably, with a soft ride over waves and a sporty but predictable feel at the wheel. It’s a sweet-handling boat with plenty of power on tap for a bit of fun on the way to the fishing grounds. We pulled up in the backwash from the rocks to throw some lures around and three of us had no trouble moving around and were able to keep out of each other’s way. With the gunwale on the lower section of deck coming to halfway up my thigh, there was a feeling of being nicely secured on board and the hull was stable in the joggling slop. Above: Stable at rest so we could get down to the real business of the day. Opposite top: The centre console is the only thing occupying the otherwise clear deck spaces. Opposite centre L-R: Top of the recommended HP range,Suzuki’s DF115A provides more than enough grunt; Work station or bait table? Either way, the rear of the boat is set up for ‘pure fishing’; Carpet-lined storage lockers are placed under the bow casting deck.
FINAL WORD Anglapro has hit a sweet spot with the Predator 16. It’s a boat capable of venturing offshore in the right conditions while still suitable for estuary and bay fishing. It will also make an ideal choice for those long runs on our bigger East Coast rivers and at 1200kg all-up on a trailer, it’s easy to haul on big road trips without having to go to the added expense of a large tow vehicle. Like its name suggests, the Predator is built to chase fish. As such it’s hard-edged and practical and doesn’t come with too many family-friendly features. That doesn’t mean you can’t take the kids out for a bit of fun occasionally but if your main use will be picnics and towing watertoys, then there are better choices. The standard Predator 16 from Anglapro comes fitted with a 90hp engine – more than enough to extract admirable performance. What you find is a high-quality pressed alloy weapon built to last and one that handles better than a lot of boats in its size range.

From a dockside source, the Dometic Spot Zero ZTC series one-touch freshwater RO system will automatically remove 95-99% of total dissolved solids, before sending the purified water to the vessel’s onboard tank. When underway, the Dometic Sea Xchange XTC series fully automatic seawater RO system will first process raw seawater, and then send the product water to the ZTC fresh water RO system system for further purification before sending it to the vessel’s tank. This unique, double-pass system produces the purest, cleanest water possible. Dometic also offers the SE Series of seawater RO systems that provide recreational boaters with the luxury of creating their own water underway. For those boaters that have more demanding
requirements, Dometic offers the SX Series of seawater RO systems that can produce up to 350lt/h of fresh water. Dometic’s Spot Zero fresh water RO systems are designed to purify typically marginal dock water sources before the water reaches the vessel’s tank. The result is that onboard water can now be safely used for bathing, cooking, drinking and making crystal-clear ice, plus spot-free glassware, dishes, and shower surfaces, and no mineral buildup inside pipes. Imagine a gleaming boat and a spot-free washdown, with no need for a chamois! You can see the full array of the Dometic Sea Xchange and Spot Zero water purification products by visiting Seabreeze Industries at booth 73 at SCIBS. STEFAN BOATING WORLD
The power of passion It’s a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together. For Steve ‘Stefan’ Ackerie, his passion is customer service and aged just 17, he combined this with a career in hairdressing. But at 70, Stefan turned to his other passion – boating. In doing so he created an industry game-changer and enlivened the marine business with a long overdue boost. “Soon after I arrived in Australia from Lebanon at 17, I bought a Lewis racing hull skiff and since then I’ve always had boats,” Stefan said. Since then came a succession of craft, including barefoot skiboats, houseboats for staff functions, luxury boats such as 25m power catamaran Hairazor and of course, the impossible-to-ignore pink offshore powerboat for racing.
FULL STEAM AHEAD Despite being presented a Queensland Greats Award in 2013 and celebrating 50 years of business in 2014, Stefan has no intention of slowing down, and those who have visited the state-of-the-art facility within the Gold Coast City Marina precinct at Coomera, know that it offers a boat shopping experience like no other. Since opening the doors in 2012, Stefan Boating World offers customers a complete boating experience, including a large selection of new and used fibreglass, aluminium and inflatable boats, from both Australian and beyond, including Anglapro, Oceania, Karnic Cruisers, Highfield RIBs and Scout Boats. Stefan Boating World boasts the largest service and repair centre on the east coast of Australia, with qualified Yamaha technicians, mobile marine servicing and chandlery, plus a Yamaha Finance and Insurance division. For the six-time Australian Offshore Powerboat Racing champion, Boating World was established to help those people who thought owning a boat was unattainable, to get out onto the water. “We really want people to be able to have their dream boat, at their dream price,” said Stefan.
SOMETHING SPECIAL Stefan’s enthusiasm for making boating more accessible doesn’t mean he lacks appreciation for superior quality or outstanding design. This becomes evident inside the Coomera showroom – it contains marble floors and mirrors, inspiring quotes, quirky conversation starters, and an office that holds

memories of lifetime achievements, pleasures, and photos of people as memorable as Stefan himself. “I am one for innovating, but also one for quality,” he said. It’s also no secret that Stefan likes to indulge his customers. “They have to see the unseen, read the unwritten, and hear the unsaid.” Talk to any Stefan Boating World customer and they’ll tell you it’s the staff that sets this dealership apart. “If you want to succeed, there’s only one way to succeed – to have staff take care of your clients. We only employ positive people – it is very important to create a positive environment for the staff and customers.” As a firm believer of “what you put in is what you get out”, Stefan and the team at Boating World support the industry through sponsorship of local fishing tournaments, partnerships with yacht clubs and boat shows throughout the country.
FORWARD THINKING So the question constantly on everyone’s mind is: what’s next for the charismatic Queenslander and his business? Aside from spending much of his time marketing the business and training staff, Stefan and new Business Development Manager Tim Atkins, have been investing time and resources into sourcing the best marine technology available. This means we can soon expect to see more innovative brands, such as Reflex Boats from New Zealand – leaders in fibreglass craft – and also a new aluminium boat range designed using cutting-edge technology, years ahead of anything else. However the most exciting announcement for Stefan Boating World is the acquisition of Chaparral Boats. As the Queensland dealer for the brand, there will be six models on display at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS), including the latest 270 Signature Cruiser, 244 Sunesta, 223 VRX, 225 SSi, H20 19 Ski & Fish and H20 19 Sport, plus four dedicated Chaparral experts on hand to assist customers. “We want to make a really big impact at this year’s Show and the display of Chaparral Boats will be very impressive,” Stefan said. A large range of Stefan’s top-selling, European-designed Karnic Cruisers will also feature alongside the Chaparral models at SCIBS, representing the quality you can expect to find at Stefan Boating World. For more information, visit the Stefan Boating World display at The Docks, or go to stefanboatingworld.com.au

BERING YACHTS
Bering brings bluewater champ THE B65 IS DESIGNED FOR LONG VOYAGES, SUCH AS THE ONE SHE MADE HERE FROM HONG KONG SCIBS visitors will be left in no doubt as to the cruising credentials of Ensign Ship Brokers’ newest brand when B65 Namaste by Bering Yachts arrives at Sanctuary Cove. Ensign Ship Brokers (who also represent San Lorenzo, Bavaria, Powerplay and Heliotrope among others) has chosen to showcase a truly capable longrange motoryacht for Bering’s first appearance in Australia.
LONG WAY HOME In a casual display of very serious bluewater cruising credentials, Namaste will arrive in Sanctuary Cove at the tail-end of an epic maiden voyage, having sailed from Hong Kong, via the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Timor. And should SCIBS visitors require further confirmation of the build quality emanating from Bering’s Chinese and Turkish shipyards, they need only glance at the gleaming white hull of Namaste and consider she already has more than 7000nm under her belt.
BLUEWATER FAMILY The Bering 65 Expedition is the first of this new motoryacht series to be showcased in Australia by Ensign Ship Brokers, and while Namaste is one of the larger boats at SCIBS, fans will be interested to learn there are even bigger siblings – up to an imposing 115ft. The mission of Bering Yachts is to raise the profile internationally of this style of vessel rarely seen in Australia – the recreational semi-custom steel trawler. Using an international team which includes Australian yacht stylist Scott Blee – who is helping develop new models – each Bering yacht displays design cues taken from modern North Sea commercial ships, but with luxurious, practical

interiors that allow small crews, or just the owners, to manage these yachts safely.
FASHION PLUS FUNCTION The upright pilothouse and reverse-raked windows give some indication of the B65’s heritage, but behind that workmanlike façade is a plush helm station, with another flybridge control station located above. A Portuguese bridge and high bulwarks provide exceptional safety for passengers who also enjoy a three cabin interior, each with its own ensuite. Twin Cummins QSL-9 diesels push this sturdy 19.3m vessel along at a cruise speed of 8kts, giving a range in excess of 5000nm, thanks to 17,000lt fuel tanks – that’s real passagemaking ability. Scott Blee said he and the company president Alexei Mikhailov were looking forward to having Ensign Ship Brokers debut this new brand at SCIBS and showing their build quality to potential customers as well as marine industry specialists. “Bering Yachts are interested in developing their presence in the Australia and New Zealand markets,” he said. “We believe these boats are a great fit for Australian customer requirements and for the cruising conditions of the area.” For more information, visit ensignbrokers.com.au; beringyachts.com
TOP: The sturdy B65 by Bering Yachts is built for short-handed world cruising by couples or small crews. ABOVE (L-R): The helm station calls to mind a commercial ship’s wheelhouse; there is plenty of space to be found inside the full-beam master cabin.

SIMRAD
Revolutionary Simrad HALO radar MEET THE WORLD’S FIRST RECREATIONAL SOLID-STATE OPEN ARRAY RADAR
Simrad is proud to announce the launch of HALO Pulse Compression Radar – the world’s first affordable solid-state, open-array radar system, featuring pulse compression technology and designed for recreational mariners. Combining the advantages of Simrad Broadband radar and traditional pulse radar systems into a single solution, HALO radar provides navigational visibility and situational awareness within pulse radar’s short-range blind spot – where once only Broadband radar could operate – all while offering exceptional long-range performance up to 72nm. Unlike traditional pulse radar systems, HALO radar does not rely on a high-powered magnetron to transmit a signal, allowing it to produce an immediate, accurate radar image instantly from standby and in 16-25 seconds after power-on – eliminating the 2-3 minute warm up associated with pulse radar. Equipped with a solid-state transceiver, HALO radar features no magnetron to be replaced, and requires no periodic tuning to maintain its accuracy or performance. In addition, solid-state technology means compliance with new and upcoming low emission standards for radar, making it safe to run HALO radar in anchorages and marinas. In standby mode, HALO radar’s power consumption is only 7W, versus 10-15W for traditional pulse radar systems. With Beam Sharpening and enhanced Target Separation Control, HALO radar provides unmatched target resolution, granting each HALO radar exceptional performance for its antenna size. Utilising its Dual Range mode, HALO radar can function as two radar systems in one – monitoring two distance ranges simultaneously, with independent display controls, without compromising on resolution. The Dual Range mode also means dual MARPA target tracking, available when combined with a compatible heading sensor. Up to 20 targets can be tracked – 10 per distance range – displaying the closest point of approach (CPA) and time to closest point of approach (TCPA) for each. “The world of recreational marine electronics has taken a quantum leap forward,” said Leif Ottosson,

CEO of Navico. “By introducing the HALO Pulse Compression Radar system, we have given boaters the best possible combination of features, providing the perfect mix of near and distant range, reliability and resolution without the associated warm-up time, power consumption, maintenance or electromagnetic emissions.” With its low power consumption, support for both 12V and 24V systems and availability in 3ft, 4ft and 6ft open arrays, HALO radar is ideal for small to midsized powerboats. The new 3ft array size and HALO radar’s low-emission technology brings the option of long-range open array radar to a smaller class of powerboats, where previously size and mounting constraints would have made Broadband radar the only option. The HALO radar system connects to any Simrad NSS evo2 or NSO evo2 multifunction display system via ethernet, with a bulkhead-mounted interface box below deck. Antenna installation has been simplified and streamlined, utilising the same thin cable and small-diameter connectors as Simrad 3G and 4G Broadband radar systems. The new Simrad HALO Pulse Compression Radar will be available from authorised dealers in quarter two, 2015. The HALO radar system with 3ft open array has a RRP of $6500; the 4ft model is $7200, and the 6ft array is $7900. These prices exclude GST. For more information about HALO radar or Simrad Yachting marine electronics, please visit simradyachting.com

THERE’S A NEW CAT IN TOWN, ONE THAT SAILED TO SCIBS FROM AFRICA
sails@maverickyachts.co.za | Tel: +27 (0) 21 552 7752
www.maverickyachts.co.za
Maverick Yachts will be exhibiting the new Maverick 440 Executive Catamaran at SCIBS for the first time this year. The Maverick 440 cat is designed for easy handling and superb performance, with spacious suites, attention to detail and sumptuous furnishings, while certified to European Recreational Craft directive category A (Ocean). There are currently two models – the Maverick 400 Custom and the Maverick 440 Custom, which can be completed either to a standard or executive specification. The Maverick 440 at SCIBS was launched mid-2014 before the owner promptly sailed across the Indian Ocean from Cape Town, via Mauritius, to Fremantle and is currently circumnavigating Australia. Although all Maverick catamarans look alike from the outside, each boat has its own character on the inside, as they are custombuilt with a great deal of input from the customer. It will be Maverick Yachts’ first visit to SCIBS and the company is looking forward to showcasing the brand in Australia. Rudi and Deslynn Pretorius, founders of Maverick Yachts, will be personally in attendance at the show. For more information, visit maverickyachts.co.za
