Dear Friends of MC Football: The Maryville College Statement of Purpose states that we “prepare students for a world of uncertainty and accelerating change” and I made that phrase the theme of my inaugural address during my first year as president. Now in my third year, we enter a year that includes several changes. We welcome a new head coach to lead the team along with several new members of his staff. The membership in our athletic conference has changed this year and will change again next Dr. Tom Bogart year, and two of this year’s non conference opponents were not on the schedule last year. A world of uncertainty and accelerating change indeed. This year marks the 120th anniversary of Maryville College’s first intercollegiate football game. Just as it always has, our football program provides the chance for students to excel outside of the classroom as a complement to their rigorous academic experience. It also gives the entire community a rallying point, cheering for the team regardless of the score. Our ideals of community are expressed in our Covenant engraved on the Covenant Stone outside Anderson Hall: Scholarship, Respect, and Integrity. I can think of no better way to describe our aspirations for the football program than as an expression of those high ideals. Although we live in a world of uncertainty and change, the Maryville College football tradition continues. I look forward to seeing you at the games as we cheer for the Fighting Scots.

Mike Rader enters his first season as head coach of the Maryville College football team with expectations of success and victory. As the school’s 28th head football coach in the program’s 118-year history, Rader comes to Maryville College with fiery enthusiasm to lead, guide, and direct the team.

Originally from Johnson City, Tennessee, Rader obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from East Tennessee State University in 2002. As a three year starter for the Buccaneer’s, Rader earned a football scholarship out of Science Hill High School following an All-State career as a quarterback and a receiver. After graduation, he went on to further his education at East Tennessee State University by obtaining his Master of Arts degree in sports management while serving as a graduate assistant for the Buccaneer’s football team. Later, he served under coach Larry Blakeney at Troy University in Troy, Alabama for a season. Upon the completion of his successful football career in high school and college, Rader began his professional career as a football coach at Huntingdon College. While at Huntington, Rader produced impressive results in building a NCAA Division III football program from the ground up. In his time there, the Huntingdon offense saw great improvement. With an average of 457 yards per game in 2011, Rader inspired and pushed the offense to dig deeper and achieve great results on the playing field. At Huntington, Rader helped create the football program from scratch. Chosen for his love for the game and tightly-knit camaraderie, Rader helped shape the Huntingdon offense to become the only offense in the nation to average over 300 yards of passing and 200 yards of rushing per game. In addition to his achievements as an offense coach, Rader helped recruit for the Hawk’s team as the recruiting coordinator for two seasons. In his time there, Rader and staff brought in more than 170 student-athletes to Huntington College to play football. His methods and strategies included prospective player on-campus visits, well-designed extensive football program presentations, and local recruiting from the area surrounding Montgomery, Alabama.

At Maryville College, Rader is expected to produce similar results. His first day on the job was the beginning of a new era for the Fighting Scots. From day one, Rader began to meet and get to know the players in order to bring them together during football season on the playing field. Rader is already establishing strong ties with the football players. During this football season, he is working with a well-trained dynamic staff to create a strong atmosphere for the team to bond and thrive on and off the field. As football season begins, Rader is preparing and focusing on bringing the team together to fight within the USA South Conference. While fostering a winning community, Rader is ready and willing to coach the Fighting Scots and lead them to victory. With talent and determination, the team is striving towards earning a conference ring. Although this is Rader’s first year at the helm of the Scots’ football team, he is excited to bring something new and exciting to the team. Rader not only is making an early impact on the team, but on the Maryville College community as well. Already, Rader has established and is excited about fostering a relationship with players and families in the surrounding Maryville area. One of his first community acts as head football coach was volunteering to help Family Promise of Blount County. Along with several of his participating football players, Rader and his team actively give back to the Maryville community through acts of volunteer work. On the home front, Rader and his wife, Lindsey, are proud to call Tennessee their home again. After serving in Alabama, Rader is finally back; close to his family and friends in Johnson City, Tennessee. Offensive Line Coach Strength & Conditioning Coordinator

MC Head Coach Mike Rader has selected Scott Brumett to direct the Fighting Scots’ defensive effort in 2012. Brumett will serve as Maryville’s Defensive Coordinator following extensive experience at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Brevard College. Brumett was a three-year starter for East Tennessee State University as the Buccaneer’s outside linebacker. He paced the squad in tackles in 2002 and was second on the team in total stops in 2003. As the ETSU program disbanded, Brumett took his talents to Chapel Hill, North Carolina and excelled as a senior tight end on the 2004 Tar Heel squad. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree requirements from North Carolina in 2005. At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2007, Coach Brumett served as a defensive assistant coach while focusing on the development of the outside linebackers. He also assisted in the Moc’s punt return game where his returners were ranked second in the Southern Conference in punt return average and 15th nationally. From 2008-2011, Brumett led Brevard College’s defense as the Tornado’s defensive coordinator. He has developed 14 All-South Athletic Conference performers while his defense has ranked in the top three in total defense within the league in three of the past four seasons.

Coach Philip Bailey will don the orange and garnet for the first time in 2012 as Coach Rader’s Offensive Line Coach. He will also serve the program as the Scots’ football strength and conditioning coordinator. Bailey graduated from Huntingdon College in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Coaching Education. He served as the Hawks’ team captain in 2008 and earned all-conference accolades that same season. While attending Georgia Southern University to attain his Masters in Sport Management, he served as a graduate assistant from 20092010. Coach Bailey gained valuable experience in managing day to day operations within a collegiate football program while organizing the development of both offensive and defensive lines. He has experience in coordinating all off-season workout programs and overseeing weight room facilities. As a defensive graduate assistant, the Eagles finished first in the Southern Conference in scoring defense, rushing defense, and red zone defense. He worked to develop All-Americans Brent Russell and Laron Scott while helping Georgia Southern finish with a No.5 National ranking in the 2010 Division I FCS final poll.

Shaun Hayes

Offensive Coordinator Quarterbacks Coach Recruiting Coordinator Coach Hayes will begin his eighth year with the Scots staff developing MC’s talented offense in 2012. He has developed seven All-USA South performers while directing three different positions during his tenure. During his first three years as a Scots assistant, Hayes served as the running backs coach helping to develop MC’s all-time leading rusher, Rommel Hightower. During the 2008 campaign, Shaun took over the secondary who hauled in twelve interceptions on the season. Three of his defensive backs, Bud Christy, Nick Jensen, and Dustin Locke each gained allleague recognition. In 2009 Coach Hayes developed MC’s air attack to average over 210 yards a game while in 2010 he led freshman Dustin Williams to earn All-USA South honors after throwing for over 1,600 yards and a dozen touchdowns and connecting on over 54% of his passes. In 2011 his signal caller, Melvin Burston, earned USA South Freshman of the Year honors following a standout campaign. Coach Hayes also serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Hayes is a 2007 graduate of Maryville College with a degree in Business and Organizational Management. This former Scot standout is originally from Rutledge, Tennessee and now resides in Maryville.

Teddy Gaines v

Defensive Backs Coach Special Teams Coordinator Coach Teddy Gaines will join Coach Mike Rader’s staff in 2012 and serve as the Scots’ Defensive Backs Coach. He will also serve the program as MC’s special teams coordinator.

Gaines was a standout student-athlete at the University of Tennessee and excelled in the Vols secondary. A member of the 1998 National Championship Tennessee squad, Teddy was drafted in the 7th round of the 2002 NFL draft. He enjoyed stints with San Francisco and Chicago in the NFL while also gaining experience with the Rhein Fire in Germany and Montreal Allouettes in Canada. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in history at Tennessee in 2004 and began a career in education. Following experiences in Knoxville, Cleveland and Kingsport as an educator and coach, Coach Gaines became a defensive assistant at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He was a strong side linebacker coach for the Mocs in 2008. From 2008-2011 he was the defensive back coach and special teams coordinator for Brevard College in North Carolina. His Tornado secondary hauled in 11 interceptions in 2011 pacing the South Atlantic Conference in total picks.

Ian Harris

Defensive Line Coach Ian Harris joins the Fighting Scots football staff following a three-year stint in professional coaching. Harris was the assistant to the football recruiting coordinator as an undergraduate while attending Marshall University from 20032006. He expanded his experience as a sports talk radio host before attaining his degree in December of 2006. Upon graduation he entered the business field and directs his own business to date. In 2010 he was with the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz in the Arena Football league as their pro player personnel director. He followed this experience as the special teams coach/player personnel director of the Green Bay Blizzard in the Indoor Football League. He comes to MC fresh from Columbus, Georgia where he was the assistant head coach/special teams coach/player personnel director for the Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League. In his three seasons, he has helped 23 players earn contracts within the UFL, CFL, and NFL. He will direct the Scotsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; defensive line in 2012.

Dakota Fitzsimmons Volunteer Offensive Assistant

Dakota Fitzsimmons enters his second year with the Fighting Scots coaching staff in 2012. He recently coached at Greenback High School where he graduated. He was a standout football and baseball player for the Cherokees during his last pair of seasons in high school. As a freshman and sophomore he attended Maryville High School where he was a member of the 2006 and 2007 State Championship football teams. He is presently attending Pellissippi State Community College where he is seeking a degree in history. He is the son of Tim and Courtney Fitzsimmons. He will be working with the Scots as an offensive assistant during the fall of 2012.

Doug Carter

Volunteer Kicking Coach Doug Carter enters his first year as an assistant on the Scots staff, assisting with the kickers and punters. He was a standout kicker for the Wolverines of Union Grove HS in McDonough, Ga, and brought his talents to MC in 2005. He was best known for his pin point placement and ability to pin opponents deep in their territory as he served as the Scots starting punter for two years, while also scoring five points on extra point attempts. His best game came in a win against Centre College in 2008, in which he punted seven times for a 41 yard average, depositing four punts inside the 20 yard line. His senior campaign was cut short six games due to a season ending leg injury. Carter graduated from MC in 2009 with a Business and Organizational Management degree. He has assisted in coaching several Alcoa little league baseball teams, given private kicking lessons, and assisted with several local high school and middle school teams over the past few years. He is very excited about the opportunity to be on the sidelines again helping his alma mater.

Josh Conner

Volunteer Assistant Running Backs/ Tight Ends Coach Conner is entering his second season coaching on the Scots sidelines. Conner, a 2008 Mar yville College graduate with a degree in History, had a great deal of success in his time playing for the Fighting Scots. Josh was a three year starter on the offensive line for the Scots garnering 2007 2nd Team All USA South honors for his efforts. Josh was also named to the 2006-2007 USA South Academic All Conference Team. After graduation Coach Conner spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Sequoyah High School in Madisonville, Tennessee directing both the offensive and defensive fronts while also serving as a history teacher. Josh is a 2004 graduate of Loudon High School. In 2012 he will direct MCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tight ends. Josh and his wife Diana, a 2011 MC Graduate, reside in Madisonville, TN.

Josh Cartagena

Volunteer Defensive Assistant Coach Cartagena enters his third season with the Fighting Scots as a volunteer assistant, coaching the defensive side of the ball. Josh is a class of 2009 graduate of Maryville College with a degree in Business and Organizational Management. He excelled for four seasons as a defensive tackle, lettering on three occasions. This native of Orlando, Florida brings a great deal of enthusiasm and experience to the Scots frontline of defense.

Aaron Schaible Volunteer Coach

Aaron will assist Coach Mike Rader's staff as a volunteer intern in 2012. He is a current student at Middle Tennessee State University with plans to graduate in December 2012. He will assist Coach Rader with the wide receivers and help Coach Hayes with MC's signal callers. He is learning the recruiting ropes from MC's recruiting coordinator Shaun Hayes while also helping Coach Gaines with equipment needs. He is a 2007 graduate of McGavock High School in Nashville, Tennessee.

2012 P r e -season outl ook After 119 years of Maryville College football and 27 coaches at the helm, 2012 begins the Mike Rader era as the 28th head coach of the Fighting Scots. Coming from rival Huntingdon College as their wide receivers coach, this offensive minded guru is planning on bringing an efficient, fast-paced offense to Maryville. Prior to his tenure at Huntingdon, Rader played his college football nearby at East Tennessee State University where he was a key part of their receiving core from 1999-2002. His experience as a player and as a successful coach/recruiter at Huntingdon made him the perfect fit to take over the Fighting Scots program. The 2012 Fighting Scots will prove to be unlike any other team of its past. With significant improvements to the offense as well as the defense, the Fighting Scots are ready to take the USA South by storm. First year head Coach Mike Rader along with his new supporting cast plan on wasting no time getting Maryville their first USA South conference championship. Coming off yet another 4-6 season for the third straight year, Maryville is ready to embrace the necessary tasks to achieve success.

OFFENSE The Scots offensive attack for the 2012 season will be one that is very different from years past. As the head of the offense, Coach Rader plans to have an explosive, yet balanced offense that will be almost impossible to stop. “What I really want to establish is the ability to run the football. We will be a tempo offense,” says Rader. “We will have several different tempos to get in and out of. The idea behind that is to keep the defense on edge so they can’t really get a beat on what you’re trying to do.” The Scots rushing attack this season will consist of as much depth as any team in the conference. Maryville is returning senior running back Paul Costanzo, junior Chad Brooks, and the team’s leading rusher from 2011 as well as the offensive MVP, junior Travis Felder. Along with them, transfer EJ Hunt and sophomore Mario Perone will also look to assist in the run game. Felder, a hard-nose runner with surprising speed and receiving skills, will be the guy looking to lead the run game throughout the season. After having impressive freshman and sophomore seasons, he is now ready to breakout as the all conference running back that he is capable of being. As a freshman, Felder showed his potential by rushing for nearly 300 yards on the season. He followed that up with another impressive year in 2011 with another near 300 yard performance on the ground. With a new dedication to running the ball under Coach Rader, Felder should have plenty of opportunities to show what he can do in his junior season. “We’re going to hang our hat on three schemes: inside zone, outside zone and the power. [Based] off those, we will have variations of several different ways to run the option,” said Rader. With so many talented backs at the position, Rader knows that this will be a clear advantage if he uses each athlete correctly. “Our job as an offensive staff is to find out what they do well, and make sure that we have them in those situations,” said Rader. Along with Felder, the Scots’ backfield will consist of a speedy and agile guy in Costanzo, as well as Brooks, whose vision has been the key of his success over the past two seasons. Costanzo, who has battled injuries ever since his sophomore year, will now be a fifth year senior looking to follow up a successful 2011 season with one last go-at-it. Brooks, who led the team in touchdowns in just his freshman season, will enter his junior season with high expectations of continuing his success. Transfer EJ Hunt and sophomore Mario Perone will be two guys that will also be in the mix of the run game. Hunt, a transfer from North Greenville College in South Carolina showed off his speed and quickness during the offseason and will be expected to have an immediate impact for the Scots’ offense. Perone, who was sidelined all season in 2011 because of a knee injury, is now fully recovered and prepared to start playing at a high level. One thing is for sure, with the depth and variety that the Scots have at running back, the future looks bright for the rushing attack in 2012. To compliment a relentless run game, the Scots will look to sophomore quarterback Eric Sisson to lead the aerial attack. After using his freshman year to adjust to speed of the game, Sisson has worked hard to put himself in a position to earn that starting role. Although young, he has shown the coaches that he is ready to be the leader of the Scots’ offense. “I think Sisson did a really good job in understanding the pass game concepts. By the end of the spring, he impressed me with his knowledge of what we were trying to do,” said Rader. “As the defense played faster, he was able to play faster. As the defense was making the windows tighter, he was able to still make completions.” One aspect of Sisson’s game that has improved drastically has been his footwork. As a freshman, Sisson was always able to throw the ball down the field without a problem, but now that his footwork has enhanced to a higher level, he will be able to reach his full potential. Not only has Sisson been able to improve immensely on the field, but he has also been able to take over the leadership role that comes with being the quarterback. “What I’ve seen from Eric from a progression standpoint is his ability to lead other people. He has put in a lot of time and effort to enhance not only his skills of

throwing the football, but to really get other people around him to get better,” said offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shaun Hayes. Being the natural leader he is, in addition to his abilities on the field, Sisson looks to have a great 2012 season leading the Scots down the field. With the absence of the Scots’ all time leading receiver Wesley Idlette due to graduation, Maryville is now looking forward to another upcoming star in Blake Williams. After an impression freshman season in 2010, Williams really stepped up his production this past season. Blake was able to tally nearly 300 yards receiving on 23 receptions and was able to show his versatility by being productive in the run game also. Coming into his junior season, Williams will be looked at by the coaches as the ‘go-to’ guy in the passing game. “His biggest strength is his ability to take what I teach him and pick up on it pretty quickly,” said coach Rader, who is also the wide receivers coach. He continued by stating “I think the first thing that comes to mind with what he improved most would be his ability to get in and out of breaks and understanding how to win at the top of the route.” Improving these aspects of his game is going to lead to a break out year for this lengthy wide out. At 6 ft. 1 inch with good speed and his ability to snag anything his way, Williams will be a deep threat on every play, as well as a possession receiver to make big catches in traffic. With that being said, Blake will have a great opportunity to be one of the best receivers in the conference. “I know Blake pretty well, and I know that he will want to be one of the top receivers in the USA South,” said Rader. Although Blake will be looked at as the leader of the pack, he won’t be able to do it alone. Williams will be accompanied by a host of talented receivers looking to make names for themselves. Senior returners include Zane Winders and Matt Likins. Both of these wide outs have seen significant playing time in their careers here at Maryville and will be looked at heavily to produce for the Scots’ offense this season. Winders is a versatile athlete with great hands who, because of his size, can be moved around to either tight end or receiver. Other than Williams, Kaleb Mitchell is the lone junior receiver returning for the Scots. Mitchell, who is making the transition from cornerback to receiver, is a quick and speedy athlete that can be used as an outside receiver or even as a slot. Sophomore returners consist of J.T. Ostrowski and Ed Johnson. Johnson, who opened the eyes of the coaches ever since he stepped on the gridiron here at Maryville, will be another guy expected to be one of the main contributors to the Scots’ receiving core. His speed and crisp route running will prove to be a great asset to the Scots’ aerial attack. “I think Ostrowski kinda caught my eye, with a guy I didn’t know a whole lot about,” said Rader. Ostrowski is a quick learner who will be ready to make an impact on the field in the 2012 season. With the leadership that the Scots have in their upperclassmen receivers, along with the talent and potential of the younger guys, the Scots’ passing game will be a sight to see in this upcoming season. In their newly acquired offense, the tight end position will be a key ingredient in the success of both the run, as well as the pass game. Sophomore Jared Miller and senior Tim Foster will be vital aspects at this position. Miller came in his freshman year and was able to produce immediately. He was able to record seven receptions for nearly 60 yards on the season. His big frame allows him to be a solid run blocker and his soft hands make him a mismatch for any defense. Miller can also be moved around from tight end to wide receiver in certain packages. Along with Miller, Tim Foster, a 6 ft. 6 inch former basketball player, played his first year of football last season. In only his first year, Foster was able to haul in three touchdown receptions. His height and glue-like hands make him a dangerous target in the red-zone. Because of his decent speed and route running skills, Foster is another guy that will be able to play the tight end position, as well as the wide receiver position. Coach Rader understands that having athletes such as Miller and Foster will be a great advantage to their offense. “What the game has become, is when you can take a big guy, like Jared who’s athletic, and you can turn him into a wide out, or you can have him attached to the line of scrimmage or put him at fullback. That really puts the defense in a bind,” said Rader. The new and improved offensive line of the Scots will be anchored by junior center Tyler Dailey. Arguably the best offensive tackle in the conference last season, Tyler will make the transition to center for the 2012 season. It didn’t take long for first year offensive line coach Philip Bailey to notice that he’s got a special player in Dailey. “He’s an aggressive guy that comes out of his hips well. He has good feet and understands a lot of things like angles, leverage and getting where you need to be.” Daily, who has been a starter ever since his freshman year, had a breakout season last year as a sophomore. More often than not, the Scots were running the ball behind Daily. His massive frame along with his immense strength and athletic ability makes him the definite front runner as the best center in the conference. Daily will be surrounded by plenty of experience on his left and right sides. 2012 P r e-se ason outl ook Dalton Stephens is another sophomore that was able to receive a fair amount of playing time as a freshman. Seniors Dustin Dudley, Devin Brunsvold and John Worley will also play key roles in the success of the Scots’ offense. The experience of the offensive line is something that the Scots aren’t used to from years previous. The entire success of the offense will lie on the shoulders of the offensive line. Without a doubt, Daily and the rest of this group will be up for the challenge.

DEFENSE The defensive side of the ball also has its share of play makers for the Scots. Along with them, the Scots also have a new defensive coordinator in charge. Scott Brummett, first year defensive coordinator from Brevard College will be the guy making the calls for the defense in 2012. Brummett will be bringing a 3-4 defense to Maryville, a change from last year’s 4-3 scheme. Although in just his first year at Maryville, Brummett has high hopes for the Scots defense in the 2012 season. “Obviously I think we should be the number one defense in the conference. I think we should be number one in sacks, pass break-ups and interceptions with the experience we have in the back end,” said Brummett. With the numerous impact players that the Scots have, his goals are certainly attainable. As far as the defensive line, the Scots are extremely young. After the loss of several vital defensive lineman due to graduation, younger guys are going to have to step up in 2012, one of those guys being a transfer, Zach Capehart. As one of the strongest kids on the team, Capehart will be expected to be the impact player for the Scots defensive line. For a guy that has only been here for one offseason, it didn’t take long for his talents to be noticed. “He’s got tremendous size and great feet. He’s also got some of the best hands when it comes to getting off blockers. I expect him to be a tremendous help this year as far as leading the defensive line,” said Brummett. Alongside Capehart, sophomore Tyler Todd will all be looked heavily to play at a high level for the Scots’ defense. After hard work in the weight room and a great offense for this group, all of these athletes will be ready when their numbers are called. Leading into the linebackers, the new 3-4 scheme will be of tremendous help to guys like Jamie Owen and Dylan Wolfenbarger, both returning starters from last season. Jamie, a ferocious hitter with great speed off the edge was switched from defensive end to linebacker for the 2012 season. After a great sophomore season in 2010 that consisted of 60 total tackles, 12 of which were for a loss and also 6 sacks. He followed that up with another great performance in 2011 with 68 tackles and 4.5 sacks, a performance that landed him First Team All USA South honors. Wolfenbarger, the team’s leading tackler from last season, is another guy that will look to repeat his impressive season from 2011. Dylan finished with 82 total tackles and a pair of sacks in 2011. Both Jamie and Dylan have impressed first year defensive coordinator Scott Brummett. When talking about these two linebackers, Brummett said “Jamie’s got great pass rush ability and great hands. He’s also very versatile. He’s able to drop and come off the edge. As far as Wolf, he’s one of the smartest players on the defense as far as picking up schemes. He’s got great quickness and can range really well in his drops.” With these two guys coming back for the Scots, the defense will certainly be a stingy one. Along with them, the linebacker core is filled with experience and depth. Other linebackers that will be big impact players for the defense will be seniors Zach Duncan and Andrew Jenkins. Duncan and Jenkins have both been reliable players for the Scots in years past. Behind the linebackers will be a well prepared and experienced defensive backfield. Returning three starters, the Scots’ secondary will be as relentless as they come. Leading the group will be All-USA South performers Kane Crowell at safety and Jake Berwind at cornerback. “I expect those two young men to be our leaders of not just the secondary and not just of the defensive unit, but these are two guys the whole entire team can look on. They are definitely guys that we expect to make a lot of plays for us in the backend and two guys that I depend on,” said first year defensive back coach, Teddy Gaines. Crowell, who has been an impact in the secondary since his freshman year, had a breakout season in 2011 and was able to rack up 75 total tackles, four pass breakups and one interception. Crowell prides himself on being one of the strongest kids on the team and continued to work hard in the offseason to have another impressive season in 2012. His strength and speed allows him to make big plays all over the field. Berwind also had a dominating junior season by leading the conference with four interceptions and six pass breakups. Quickness and natural instinct has been the key ingredients to Berwind’s success. His success allows him to play with confidence on the field and put himself in good positions to make big plays. Probably the most vital aspect of these two guys’ game is their experience. “I think the main strength of these guys is that they have been in the fire before. definitely have a significant amount of playing experience. You can’t under appreciate playing experience,” said Coach Gaines. Another returning starter that will be a major help in the secondary will be sophomore Kendyhl Rodgers. Rodgers was named USA South Athletic Rookie of the Week for three consecutive weeks in just his freshman season. Rodgers was able to tally 26 total tackles and an interception in 2011. His speed is his biggest asset and will prove to be a key aspect in the success of the Scots’ secondary. Other main ingredients of the Scots’ defense will be sophomore Zach Brown and senior Cody Martin. These two safeties will be competing for a starting position at the free safety spot and are both extremely reliable choices. Other notable defensive backs that will be looking to produce on the field will be sophomores Evan Rogers, Bryson Welch, Abe Kiernan and senior safety Tony Gill. With the amount of experience that this group possesses, the secondary should be the main strength of the Scots’ defense.

SPECIAL TEAMS As far as the special teams units are concerned, the Scots will be prepared as usual. Sophomore Chasen Williams will handle the punting duties while a battle for kicking duties will be fought by Dylan Miller, Jonathan Sykes, and Whitley Perry. Consistency will be the determining factor to who will get game day action. In addition, heading the special teams unit will be Coach Gaines, a guy who understands the importance of special teams. “As a kick game as a whole, we just want to make sure we emphasize to our guys how important the kick game is. It can definitely make or break us,” said Gaines. “We need the right guys with the right attitude,” he continued. As far as the punt and punt return game is concerned, Gaines understands that this aspect of the game is just as crucial as the rest. “Our main thing is to execute and be sound in the punt as well as the punt return game. Hopefully we can make some big plays to win football games, and avoid mistakes that will lose us the game.” Gaines and the rest of the Scots understand that field position is one of the most important parts of the game, and they plan on dominating that aspect each and every game. With the amount of big time players returning on both sides of the ball for the Scots in addition to the new coaching staff, excitements as well as expectations are at an all-time high for the Fighting Scots. The Scots finally have all the tools necessary to take home their first conference championship. Not only are players and coaches excited about the 2012 season, but the fans and the community are also looking forward to see what all the hype has been about. One thing is for sure, the Scots of 2012 will not disappoint. After working harder than ever throughout the offseason, the Scots have come together with one goal in mind: a conference championship. Offensively, the Scots will introduce a new offense that will prove to be as dynamic and efficient as any offense in the conference. On the defensive side, the Scots will be aggressive with their play makers up front and let their speed and experience in the backfield take care of the rest. Jake comes into his senior season looking to repeat his All-USA South performance in the Scotsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; secondary. After having a strong off-season, Jake is fully prepared to take on the top receivers in the conference. In the 2010 season Jake contributed mainly on special teams for the Scots including a vital fumble recovery on a kick-off to help seal a victory against Ferrum College the last game of the season. Jake recorded 12 tackles and two pass breakups as a sophomore. As a junior in 2011, Berwind led the conference with four interceptions. He earned USA South Honorable Mention honors for his breakout season. His six pass breakups were second on the squad while he tallied 34 total tackles including 23 solo stops. Jake is majoring in writing communications and is the son of Linda and Jim Berwind.

This hard-hitting safety has worked hard off the field in the weight room to become one of the strongest players and worked hard on the field to make his presence felt. Kane began getting significant playing time in his sophomore season where he recorded 20 tackles and also tied a single game record for passes broken up with five against Averett University. As the full time starter in 2011, Crowell proved to be worthy of the starting spot by earning USA South Honorable Mention honors for his 75 total tackles, four pass breakups and an interception returned 39 yards against Ferrum College. Kane is majoring in physical therapy and is the son of Crystal and Ken Crowell.

Jamie enters his final season ready to finish off his impressive career with yet another dominating season. In the 2010 season Jamie busted onto the scene with 60 tackles, 12 for loss, as well as six sacks. As a junior, Jamie racked up 68 total tackles including eight for a loss and led the team with 4.5 sacks, an effort that landed him First Team All-USA South honors. This season Jamie will be making the switch to linebacker where he expects to continue his dominance. His overwhelming strength along with his speed off the edge will continue to cause problems for offenses around the conference. Jamie is majoring in business and is the son of Beth and Rick Owen.

After playing a significant role on special teams for his first two seasons as a Scot, Cody was able to show off what he had as a safety last season. He was able to record 12 total tackles and come up with a crucial pass breakup in the late stages of a close game against NC Wesleyan. Cody had a great off-season and has improved every aspect of his game. His hard work in the weight room has made him one of the strongest kids on the team. Cody is majoring in outdoor recreation with a minor in business and is the son of Tony Martin.

Zane comes into his senior season expected to be one of the leading receivers for the Scots. He is one of the best blockers and has some of the best hands on the Scots’ offense. After a solid sophomore season, Zane was able to follow it up his junior season as a great role player making catches when they counted the most. His hard work and endless effort was evident when he recovered a fumble and scored a touchdown after it had been intercepted in the fourth quarter of a close game against Methodist University, a play that earned National Play of the Week honors. Zane is an economics major and is the son of Joey and Debby Winders.

After fighting multiple injuries his first three seasons, Paul was finally able to show people what he could do with the ball in his hands in the 2011 season. He finished off the season with a pair of touchdowns and showed his versatility out of the backfield with eight receptions. After a great off-season, Paul enters the 2012 season as a redshirt senior and will be looked at heavily not only on the field in the run game, but also off the field as a leader. Paul is a business major and the son of Paul and Patty Costanzo.

Not only will he be ready to play a role on the defensive side of the ball, he will also be looked at to provide on special teams. After being sidelined his junior season due to injury, Andrew has worked extremely hard to get back in uniform. A solid off-season has fully prepared Andrew to get back on the field and be a main aspect of the Scots’ linebacker core. Andrew is majoring in business and is the son of Karen and Jeff Jenkins.

After making the transition from basketball to football, Tim was able to use his size and vertical ability to his advantage. In his first year on the squad, Tim was able to score three touchdowns on the season, proving to be a lethal red zone target. Making the move from tight end to wide receiver, Tim will be able to show off his hands even more in the 2012 season. His hard work in the weight room and on the field has him fully prepared to dominate his senior season. Tim is majoring in writing communications and is the son of Tim and Carmen Foster.

After missing his junior season due to injury, Devin hit the ground running and had a great offseason that has gotten him back into the flow of things. One of the oldest Divison III conferences in the nation, the USA South was born as the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1963 when six institutions with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined as founding members. Those colleges were: Charlotte College (now UNC-Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College, North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and Lynchburg College. The basis for the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, and thus no athletically awarded financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. That philosophy still exists today. In February 2003, it was announced that the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would change its name to the USA South Athletic Conference. The name change was made official on July 1, 2003 and the first USA South Athletic Conference Championships were awarded in the fall of 2003. The Conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time the NCAA divided into three legislative and competitive divisions, with Division III allowing membership for nonathletic scholarship institutions only. The Dixie joined the NCAA, and in so doing, became one of the first conferences accepted into Division III. Since the inception of Division III, the USA South has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding regional and national reputation in a number of sports.

The conference sponsored athletics programs for men only until 1981. In that year, the NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s sports, and the Dixie followed that lead by including women’s sports. The conference now sponsors championships in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s golf and women’s lacrosse for total of 14 sports. Each year the conference not only recognizes the participants for outstanding athletic achievements, but academic excellence as well. Student athletes who maintain academic averages of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale in both academic semesters are named to the Academic All-Conference Team. This group annually averages well over 550 students. Each year, the President’s Cup is awarded to the school that accumulates the most points through the academic year in sports that are sponsored by the USA South. In 2004-05, the President’s Cup was changed to have one winner for men’s sports and one winner for women’s. In 2005-06, the Conference began awarding a men’s, a women’s and an overall President’s Cup. Presently, the Conference features 12 full-members and one affiliate member (Agnes Scott, women’s lacrosse). League membership will increase by two beginning with the 2013-14 season as Covenant and Huntingdon will become league full-members. Complete league information can be found at www.usasouth.net.

Blake enters his junior season with high expectations. Blake has been a solid performer for the Scots’ receiver core and comes off a stellar 2011 season. In just his sophomore season, he was able to tally 294 yards on 23 receptions and one touchdown for 40 yards against NC Wesleyan. For the 2012 season, Blake is expected to be the number one target for the offense and is fully prepared to take on that role. His dedication to his route running as well as his reliable hands has put him in position to be one of the best receivers in the conference. Blake is majoring in business and is the son of Joe and Darla Williams.

After starting his collegiate career as a wide receiver, Nick made the transition over to corner back for his sophomore season. While there, he managed to start six of ten games and tally 26 tackles, four pass breakups and one interception against Greensboro College. For the 2012 season, Nick will be taking his speed back to the offensive side of the ball where it all started. After a strong offseason, Nick is fully prepared to be a key factor in the Scots’ receiving core. Nick’s break-away speed and crisp routes will prove to be a problem for opposing defenses. A former kick returner and defensive standout for Haines City High School, Ruben looks to join his brother Kendyhl in securing one of the top secondaries in the USA South. Ruben is an engineering major and is the son of Kesha Rodgers of Dundee, Florida.

Travis comes into the 2012 season ready to continue his dominance in the backfield. This powerful back has made a living the past two season punishing anyone who tries to tackle him. In just his freshman season, Travis was able to rack up nearly 300 yards on the ground. He followed up in 2011 with another impressive year, tallying 270 more yards and two touchdowns. Travis has been known as one of the hardest workers on the team and takes pride in being one of the strongest kids on the team. Travisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hard work in the weight room has made him one of the scariest running backs to tackle in the conference. He looks to have a breakout year in 2012 and is fully prepared to do so. Travis is majoring in physical education with teacher licensure and is the son of Albrey Felder Sr. and Audrey Felder.

Jordan was a standout defender and an all-conference performer before arriving at MC. He will use his athleticsm as a Fighting Scot wide receiver in 2012. Mario enters his junior season after being sidelined with a knee injury for the entire 2011 season. After spending much time rehabbing, Mario was able to have a strong offseason and get himself ready for the 2012 season. His lightning quick cuts and jukes have been something that he has been known for since the day he stepped on the gridiron for the Scots. This season, Mario plans to utilize that quickness and be a key part of the Scots’ running attack and return game. Mario is majoring in psychology and is the son of Kelly and Mario Perone.

Dylan enters his junior season looking to dominate just as he did in his junior season. His breakout season consisted of a team high 82 total tackles as well as a pair of sacks. His four pass breakups showed his ability to have an effect in the pass game also. Dylan will be looked at as the leader of the Scots’ linebacker core and is fully prepared to take on that role. His hard work off the field has made him one of the strongest and fastest players on the team. Dylan is majoring in history and is the son of Andrea and John Wolfenbarger.

Joe enters his junior season as one of the leaders on the offensive line. After a productive freshman season, Joe was able to quickly earn a starting role heading into the 2011 season. This versatile athlete has the ability to play and excel at all positions on the offensive line. As one of the strongest guys on the line, Joe will be a key factor in the run game as well a solid pass blocker. Coming off a strong off season, Joe has high hopes of dominating his junior season. Joe is majoring in mathematics and is the son of Tony and Katrina Brooks.

Training Room

At the foot of the Smoky Mountains sits the beautiful Lloyd L. Thornton Stadium, home of the Scots of Maryville College. With the generous contributions from alumnus Don Story in 2001, the stadium was completely revamped with a new surface of Bermuda turf. With the stadium holding nearly 3,000 seats, opposing staffs and coaches are comfortably accommodated in the press box which can hold over 20 media representatives from the local area. The stadium has proven to be fan-friendly as well with the stadium seats only feet away from the field. Several new additions have become part of Thornton Stadium including a thorough sprinkler system, new parking lots, goalposts, and scoreboard. In 2002 the stadium was also remodeled to where concession stands, bathrooms and other necessities for fans were more accessible.

The training room holds top of the line equipment to reach the needs and wants of players throughout the season. The players are supervised by a team of 3 full-time NATA certified and Tennessee State licensed athletic trainers. The room consists of six taping tables and four therapy tables. A large group of student athletic trainers assist the training team to where they can help every student-athlete on campus, which is up to 350 students.

Practice Field The main practice field is conveniently placed right behind the Cooper athletic center which gives players easy access to water, trainers, etc during practice. Also made from Bermuda turf, the field is joined adjacently by two other practice areas for the use of the team.

Locker Room Each player on the team is granted their own large oak locker for their use throughout the season. Conveniently placed in the Cooper Athletic center, players have access to trainers, coaching staff, and any other staff in which they may need to contact.

Weight Room With over 6,000 pounds available to any student on campus the weight room facility is 3,000 square foot of nearly any workout that would be needed for the typical athlete, with Olympic bars at every station. The facility runs the same operation hours as the Cooper Athletic Center (8am-10pm Monday-Thursday, shorter hours on Friday-Sunday.) The room is completely covered with rubber floors and surrounded by mirrored walls.

Meeting Rooms Created in 2008 the orange and garnet meeting rooms consist of state of the art media technology where the team can hold meetings, film sessions, etc. It is suited to fit any size group rather itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a squad of 20 or a team of 100.

Honaker Field, Boydson Baird Gymnasium, and Scotland Yard will continue to have a familiar voice echo across the highlands as Greg Judkins returns to the public address system for the Scots in 2012-13. Greg is the voice of the Maryville High School Red Rebels football and baseball programs and has done Maryville College football, basketball, and baseball games for over 16 years. Greg was honored for his service to the college as the 2012 Ken Kribbs Award recipient.

George DeBaby WKVL Radio 850 Fighting Scots fans will once again enjoy the play-by-play coverage of George DeBaby on all MC football games in 2012 as well as home basketball games for the Scots and Lady Scots during their 2012-2013 campaign. 2012-2013 will be the 11th season that DeBaby will cover the Scots. Athletic Training Staff Sharon Wood, Grant Davis, Jennie Hess

This dynamic trio does everything possible to prevent injuries and provide our 350 student-athletes with a safe, successful athletic experience. Our athletics training facility is one of the larger, better-equipped facilities in the region. The staff includes three NATA certified athletic trainers and three team physicians. The 2012-2013 student athletic trainers include senior Sarah Schmid, sophomores Montana Dunn, Rachel Dunn, and Samantha Turner as well as freshmen Hunter Amos, Shelby Hank, and Lauren McGee.

Sharon Wood, Head Athletic Trainer

Twenty-five years ago Sharon Wood returned to Maryville College as our Head Athletic Trainer. The job of coordinating our sports medicine program has been in good hands ever since that 1987 season. Sharon graduated from Maryville College in 1983 with a degree in physical education. At Maryville College, she was the captain of the tennis team and the first recipient of our Carl H. Black Student Trainer of the Year Award. She graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology. She is licensed in Tennessee as an Athletic Trainer and Emergency Medical Technician-IV. During her tenure at Maryville College, Sharon has maintained an excellent student trainer program. As our athletic program has grown, our athletic trainers have been there to prevent, evaluate, and treat every athletic injury. While at Maryville College, Sharon had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s finest athletes as a volunteer athletic trainer for the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996 and at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in 1997 and 2000. In 2000, she was chosen as the athletic trainer for USA Basketball’s College Select Team, which traveled to Taiwan to play in the William R. Jones Cup. In 1998, the Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society chose her as the College Athletic Trainer of the Year. In 1999, she was awarded the Outstanding Administrator at Maryville College. In 2000, she was inducted into the Maryville College Athletic Wall of Fame. Sharon is also an adjunct instructor for Maryville College in the PHR department. She is also an instructor trainer for the American Red Cross in CPR and First Aid.

Grant Davis, Assistant Athletic Trainer

Grant Davis came to Maryville College after having served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for a pair of seasons. Davis earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Carson-Newman College in 2009 followed by his master’s degree in clinical exercise physiology from UTC. While working on his graduate degree, Davis served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for UTC. He covered the Mocs men’s and women’s golf, football, and wrestling squads for the 2010-2011 academic year. The fall of 2012 begins Grant’s second year of service with the Maryville College Scots. While at Maryville, Grant will concentrate on the care of MC’s 350 student-athletes and will implement daily the proper prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses. Grant is no stranger to the local community. He graduated from local Alcoa High School and his love for the outdoors pushes him to enjoy hiking, swimming, and running half marathons. He shares those interests with his new wife Abbi. The Davis family lives in Alcoa.

Ken Bell has guided the Maryville College medical staff since 1982. Under his guidance, our sports medicine program has grown into one of the finest in Division III. Eric Morgan, MD Eric Morgan has been an invaluable addition to the Maryville College medical team. Dr. Morgan is a graduate of Marshall University, where he played offensive line on the Thundering Herd Football Team. He graduated from the medical school at Marshall, then completed a five-year residency at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Following his residency, he completed a trauma fellowship and a sports medicine fellowship at Grant Medical Center in Ohio. He has added a wealth of knowledge to our sports medicine team since joining our program in 1998. Dr. Morgan is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and a specialist in shoulder surgery and sports medicine. Dr. Morgan, his wife Tonja, and their two children live in Maryville. Dr. Morgan also serves as the team physician for Heritage High School. In his free time, Dr. Morgan enjoys fishing, hunting, scuba diving, backpacking, guitar, and photography.

Russell Gibson, MD Dr. Russell Gibson is a graduate of Maryville College (class of ‘82) and Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. He has served as our team physician since his return to Maryville in 1989. Dr. Gibson’s role in our sports medicine program is to guide us in the general health care of our athletes. Dr. Gibson is board-certified by the American Board of Family Practice. He also holds certification in NBME part I - II, FAA Aviation Medical Exam, and as a Medical Review Officer. Dr. Gibson is married to the former Kay Lippincott, and they have three children. The Gibson’s live in Maryville. Dr. Gibson is in private practice at 129 Montgomery Lane, Maryville.
