Dear Friends of MC Football: This 2011 fall season, my second campaign wearing the Orange and Garnet with great pride, brings new challenges every day. As a candidate for president, I was often asked about my management style. My reply evoked the metaphor of a coach. A good coach recruits outstanding players, puts them in positions where they can be successful, and helps them work together towards a common goal. This Dr. Tom Bogart metaphor was not invented; rather it reflects my college experience as a member of the soccer team. Because my approach to professional life is strongly influenced by my experience as a student-athlete, I’m especially excited to cheer for the Scots this year. At Maryville College, we work to develop the whole person. Our football program provides the chance for students to excel out of the classroom to complement their rigorous curricular experience. It also gives the entire community a rallying point, cheering for the team regardless of the outcome on the field. Our ideals of community are expressed in the Covenant: Scholarship, Respect, and Integrity. I can think of no better way to describe our aspirations for our football program than as an expression of those high ideals. I look forward to seeing you at the games, where you can continue to tell me about our wonderful traditions and we can make new memories for the future.

assistant football coach at Bowling Green University. He later advanced to take an assistant defensive line coaching position at the University of Missouri during the 1981 and 1982 seasons. Coach Ierulli worked for three seasons (1983-1985) under Coach Terry Bowden at Salem College (W.Va.). As linebacker coach and eventually defensive coordinator, Ierulli’s defenses were ranked within the NAIA’s top ten both seasons while earning a pair of NAIA playoff appearances. The 1986 and 1987 seasons saw Coach Ierulli working as a defensive coordinator under Coach Rocky Rees at Susquehanna University. His Crusaders finished the 1986 season with a 12-1 record and a semi-final appearance in the Division III playoffs. Ierulli rejoined Bowden at Samford University (Ala.) in 1988 as linebacker coach and recruiting coordinator. His efforts helped the Bulldogs move from a Division III program in 1988 to Division I-AA playoff teams in 1991 and 1992. Coach Ierulli connected once again with Rocky Rees in 1996 as defensive coordinator at Shippensburg University (Pa.). During his six year tenure, the Red Raiders posted five winning teams. In January 2002, Ierulli was named the Division II Assistant Coach of the Year. The award was created to honor assistant coaches who excel in community service, commitment to the student-athlete, on-field coaching success along with AFCA and professional organization involvement. Throughout his career, Ierulli and his wife Carol have established a mentoring and tutoring program at local elementary schools. Begun when he was an assistant at Missouri, the Ierulli’s have used football players as role models for the children in the community. Ierulli’s family ties run deep at Maryville College. Tony met his future wife, Carol, at Maryville and were married after their graduation in 1980. Carol’s parents, Eldria and Etta Hurst, are former long-time employees of Maryville. Tony’s brother, David, attended MC and played on the same baseball team with Tony during the 1978-1979 seasons. Finally, Tony and Carol’s son, Anthony (A.J.) played for the Scots baseball team during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. The Ierulli family baseball ties continue with Tony’s cousin Joe Garardi, who presently serves as the manager of the New York Yankees.

The Ierulli’s have three children: A.J. is a graduate of Shippensburg University. Katie graduated from Maryville in 2007. Their youngest daughter, Kelli, excelled in golf as a Scot and graduated in 2010. The couple have two granddaughters, Ruby and Adlee.

u s a s o u t h at h letic conference

One of the oldest Divison III conferences in the nation, the USA South was born as the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1963 when six institutions with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined as founding members. Those colleges were: Charlotte College (now UNC-Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College, North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and Lynchburg College. The basis for the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, and thus no athletically awarded financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. That philosophy still exists today. In February 2003, it was announced that the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would change its name to the USA South Athletic Conference. The name change was made official on July 1, 2003 and the first USA South Athletic Conference Championships were awarded in the fall of 2003. The Conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time the NCAA divided into three legislative and competitive divisions, with Division III allowing membership for nonathletic scholarship institutions only. The Dixie joined the NCAA, and in so doing, became one of the first conferences accepted into Division III. Since the inception of Division III, the USA South has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding regional and national reputation in a number of sports.

The conference sponsored athletics programs for men only until 1981. In that year, the NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s sports, and the Dixie followed that lead by including women’s sports. The conference now sponsors championships in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s golf and women’s lacrosse for total of 14 sports. Each year the conference not only recognizes the participants for outstanding athletic achievements, but academic excellence as well. Student athletes who maintain academic averages of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale in both academic semesters are named to the Academic All-Conference Team. This group annually averages well over 550 students. Each year, the President’s Cup is awarded to the school that accumulates the most points through the academic year in sports that are sponsored by the USA South. In 2004-05, the President’s Cup was changed to have one winner for men’s sports and one winner for women’s. In 2005-06, the Conference began awarding a men’s, a women’s and an overall President’s Cup. Presently, the Conference features 13 institutions. Shenandoah will be leaving the league following this fall season and LaGrange will enter the conference beginning in the fall of 2012. Complete league information can be found at www.usasouth.net.

Located in Maryville, Tennessee, Maryville College is ideally located between the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Knoxville, the state’s third largest city. Founded in 1819, it is the 12th oldest institution of higher learning in the South. With focus on the liberal arts, College faculty and staff are dedicated to teaching the skills and providing opportunities for students to be successful and make a difference in the world. The 2011 Fighting Scots will feature a strong offensive attack and a relentless defense. Head Coach Tony Ierulli enters his ninth season at the helm with aspirations on attaining their first USA South title since joining the league seven years ago. Maryville is coming off a fifth place league finish in 2010 after posting a 3-4 conference mark while ending the season 4-6 overall. The Scots offensive attach returns experience at the skill positions as they prepare for the 2011 season. Newly appointed Offensive Coordinator Shaun Hayes and the whole Scots coaching staff are excited with the weapons they have in their arsenal. A pair of All-USA South quarterbacks come to camp ready to compete for the starting job. With a combined 4,024 yards passing and 30 passing touchdowns, Tim Connor and Dustin Williams will be a rare 1-2 punch at quarterback that any team would yearn for. Connor was lost to a shoulder injury all of last season and is eager to retain the reigns of this high powered offense for his senior season and follow-up on his junior year numbers of 1,800 yards passing and 14 touchdowns. Williams controlled the Scots offense as a true freshman during the 2010 season and threw for 1,648 yards and 12 touchdowns with a 12

54% completion rate. Junior Jake Crawford adds to the three man race for the starting job. Coach Hayes mentioned that “it is exciting to return strong leadership and a strong skill set to one of the most important positions within any program. You really get the best of both worlds with Tim and Dustin because you get the accurate, spread the field speed guy in Dustin and the strong armed hard-nosed signal caller in Tim. Jake Crawford also has similar collective qualities that will enable him to challenge for a starting quarterback role.” The rushing attack will look to replace rusher Darrell Tate with two running backs who contributed greatly last season. Sophomores Travis Felder and Chad Brooks look to compete for carries as both running backs shouldered the load during an injury filled past season for Tate. In just five games played, Brooks rushed 316 yards and three touchdowns; while Felder rushed for 319 yards. The Scots will also hope to keep Senior Paul Costanzo healthy as he looks to bolster the Scots rushing attack for the 2011 season. Junior Justin Kanjanabout will continue to plug the fullback role as a vital contributor as a blocker and pass catching wing. “I am very pleased with the depth at the

2 0 1 1 P re-s eason out look running back position. With all three of these guys you get all of the qualities that we look for in our starting running back. Travis Felder is strong and can hit the holes while Chad Brooks has outstanding vision. If Paul Constanzo can stay healthy he will certainly compete for the starting spot.” Coach Hayes stated. The receiving core returns arguably the best group of wideouts in MC history. With Scots’ all-time leading receiver in reception yards and touchdowns, Wesley Idlette looks to improve his numbers going into his senior season. This three-time All-USA South receiver and team captain will be supported by the many weapons around him. Ryan Roach had a breakout season last year with 44 receptions for 438 yards and a touchdown. As a true freshman, Blake Williams contributed 27 catches for 280 yards. Williams will be looked to improve on his stats as a sophomore. Senior Zach Bledsoe continues to play a versatile role in the Scots offense and juniors Matt Likins and Zane Winders will compete for more receptions in the new season. The receiving group will look to be aided by Zach Franklin. Brunsvold had a key touchdown catch against Averett last season. “We are extremely deep at wide receiver with Wesley Idlette being our strong leader on and off the field. Ryan Roach and Blake Williams will look to expand on their huge contributions last year and Zach Bledsoe will continue to be our most versatile wide receiver. Zane Winders and Matt Likins will add depth to our receiving core. Our tight ends Devin Brunsvold and Zach Franklin will help aid our receiving and passing game this year.” Coach Hayes added. The offensive line will be paced by team captain senior Brad Eich. Eich, an All-USA South center, will play a huge role in mentoring a young offensive line going into the 2011 season. Sophomores Tyler Daily and Dylan Mills saw action during the 2010 season and will look to contribute as sophomores. Dustin Dudley, Joseph Brooks, and Zach Broadwater will hope to add depth to the offensive line as well. “ Brad Eich is our captain and will anchor the center position, as he goes we go. We will look for some of these young lineman to step up and fill major roles that were left by our ‘Fighting Scots’ award winner Corey Brewer last season.” Coach Hayes mentioned. The Scots look to retool the defense as they prepare for the 2011 season. The Scots will lose the leading tackler from the previous two years in Tanner Caylor due to early graduation. MC will also look to replace three all conference defensive backs from a year ago in Phil Garrett, Demetrius Christian and Caleb Clement. Maryville will also lose pressure off the end as Yohance Butler will not return for his senior campaign due to an injury. The defensive line returns two time all-conference senior Blake Barnes as their anchor along with seniors GL Waynick and Kyle Kriz. Junior Jamie Owen returns to aid the speed rush attack and build on 60 tackles (11.5 for a loss) and 6.5 sacks from the previous season. Senior Justin Siler will look to battle for play time at the defensive end position. “The defensive line will be our strength coming into the 2011 season. We bring back much experience there and we know that we can rely on these seniors to make quality plays.” The line backing corps is filled with hard hitting tacklers to move

into the 2011 season. Team captain Alex Anderson makes the switch from three years at safety to bring speed to the line backing group. Junior Zach Duncan and sophomore Leterrin Thomas will battle for the middle linebacker spot. Senior Dakota Crews will look to build on his 35 tackles from a year ago as the all-conference academic team member provides leadership to this line backing core. Junior Dylan Wolfenbarger will return 27 tackles and will remain a force on special teams as well. “Alex Anderson is the strongest player on our team pound for pound and I have no doubt he will contribute significantly at the strong linebacker position. Dylan Wolfenbarger gives us versatility because he is very good in pass coverage and can play both the strong and weak linebacker positions for us. Dakota Crews has the heart of a lion and knows the position well. Leterrin Thomas and Zach Duncan are two of the hardest hitters on the team and will compete for the middle linebacker spot going through camp.” Fifth year senior Bud Christy will be the anchor of a secondary that took a huge hit in the offseason by losing three all- conference performers. Christy is two interceptions shy of becoming the all time leader in Scots history. Across from Christy, junior Kane Crowell will provide speed and strength at the strong safety position. Crowell stepped in for an injured Christy as season, and earned twenty tackles with seven passes broken up. Juniors Cody Martin and James Roe provide vital depth at the safety position and will earn quality playing time during the 2011 season. Junior Jake Berwind and sophomore Kaleb Mitchell look to man the cornerback positions. Berwind is coming off a season where he aided the special teams but will look to add onto his 12 tackles and two pass breakups from last season. Mitchell makes the transition to cornerback and has all the tools to excel at the position if he can stay healthy. “Bud Christy and Kane Crowell will give us two excellent safeties to anchor our secondary. Both guys are strong, fast, and crafty at the position. James Roe and Cody Martin have all the tools as well and will get their chance. Jake Berwind and Kaleb Mitchell are two lockdown coverage corners who can also aid the run game as well. The secondary is a very hard-working bunch with lots of potential.” Secondary coach Dustin Locke stated. The Scots return the only first team all-conference kicker in school history in senior Andrew Noboa. Noboa connected on 12 of 19 field goal attempts during the 2010 football season and is expected to have a big senior season. Junior Tony Gill will add depth to the kicking unit as he progresses from the transition from wide receiver. Senior R.J. Sandmeyer will continue to pace the punting unit during the 2011 season and is expected to have an all-conference caliber year. Senior Wide Receiver Ryan Roach will continue to serve as the long snapper for the Scots. Roach had a great 2011 season as the team’s long snapper. Maryville, 20-22 in career USA South challenges, will look to surpass their best league finish since 2007 where they finished third within one of the strongest NCAA Division III conferences in the country. MC’s Honaker Field has been home to exciting Scots football for 118 years where strong fan support and close proximity to the action can be found on any home football Saturday in the fall. M a r y v i l l e C ollege S p ort Facilitie s Stadium At the foot of the Smoky Mountains sits the beautiful Lloyd L. Thornton Stadium, home of the Scots of Maryville College. With the generous contributions from alumnus Don Story in 2001, the stadium was completely revamped with a new surface of Bermuda turf. With the stadium holding nearly 3,000 seats, opposing staffs and coaches are comfortably accommodated in the press box which can hold over 20 media representatives from the local area. The stadium has proven to be fan-friendly as well with the stadium seats only feet away from the field. Several new additions have become part of Thornton Stadium including a thorough sprinkler system, new parking lots, goalposts, and scoreboard. In 2002 the stadium was also remodeled to where concession stands, bathrooms and other necessities for fans were more accessible.

Practice Field The main practice field is conveniently placed right behind the Cooper athletic center which gives players easy access to water, trainers, etc during practice. Also made from Bermuda turf, the field is joined adjacently by two other practice areas for the use of the team.

Locker Room Each player on the team is granted their own large oak locker for their use throughout the season. Conveniently placed in the Cooper Athletic center, players have access to trainers, coaching staff, and any other staff in which they may need to contact.

Training Room The training room holds top of the line equipment to reach the needs and wants of players throughout the season. The players are supervised by a team of 3 full-time NATA certified and Tennessee State licensed athletic trainers. The room consists of six taping tables and four therapy tables. A large group of student athletic trainers assist the training team to where they can help every student-athlete on campus, which is up to 350 students.

Weight Room With over 6,000 pounds available to any student on campus the weight room facility is 3,000 square foot of nearly any workout that would be needed for the typical athlete, with Olympic bars at every station. The facility runs the same operation hours as the Cooper Athletic Center (8am-10pm Monday-Thursday, shorter hours on Friday-Sunday.) The room is completely covered with rubber floors and surrounded by mirrored walls.

Meeting Rooms Created in 2008 the orange and garnet meeting rooms consist of state of the art media technology where the team can hold meetings, film sessions, etc. It is suited to fit any size group rather it’s a squad of 20 or a team of 100.
