Message from the President DR. TOM BOGART President, Maryville College
The 2010-11 academic year is my first at Maryville College. It has already been a rewarding time as I have begun to work alongside the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other friends of the college. As a candidate for president, I was often asked about my management style. My reply evoked the metaphor of a coach. A good coach recruits outstanding players, puts them in positions where they can be successful, and helps them work together towards a common goal. This metaphor was not invented; rather it reflects my college experience as a member of the soccer team. Because my approach to professional life is strongly influenced
by my experience as a student-athlete, I’m especially excited to join the Scots this year. At Maryville College, we work to develop the whole person. Our basketball program provides the chance for students to excel out of the classroom to complement their rigorous curricular experience. It also gives the entire community a rallying point, cheering for the team regardless of the outcome on the court. Our ideals of community are expressed in the Covenant: Scholarship, Respect, and Integrity. I can think of no better way to describe our aspirations for our basketball program than as an expression of those high ideals. I look forward to seeing you at the games, where you can tell me about our wonderful traditions and we can make new memories for the future.
Dr. Tom Bogart President, Maryville College
MC Coaching Staff RANDY LAMBERT Head Basketball Coach
Randy Lambert enters his 31st season directing the Maryville College basketball program following a steller 2009-2010 season. Lambert is no stranger to the local community. He was born in Maryville, graduated from Maryville High School in 1972 and continued his education at Maryville College. As a member of the Scots basketball team, Lambert was a four-year starter and garnered numerous honors, including the 16th leading scorer in the nation during his senior year. With 1,489 career points, he is currently listed as the sixth leading scorer in MC basketball history. Lambert’s first season as head coach of the Scots began in 1980 after three successful years at Lenoir City (Tenn.) High School. During his early years at MC, Lambert was faced with a major rebuilding task. Under his direction, the 19841985 Scots finished the regular season 17-8 and 11-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, clinching the conference championship. During the remaining seasons of the 1980’s, the MC cagers recorded a string of winning records. This was merely a sign of things to come for Lambert’s talented troops in the decade of the 1990’s. The 1990-1991 team shattered almost every school record 2

in basketball. The team finished 22-5 and made the trip to the national tournament- the first such trip in MC’s basketball history. Lambert’s 1991-1992 squad did even better, ending the season with a 25-4 record. This outstanding team was ranked sixth nationally in the final poll and received the No.1 seed in the South for the national tournament. This team advanced to the final round of eight and was defeated in the finals of the sectional by Wisconsin-Platteville (87-83, O.T.). Building on the success of his teams in the early 1990’s, Lambert’s program has been a regular participant in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. His Scots posted 12 consecutive trips to the NCAA post-season, 17 overall. During the decade of the 2000’s Lambert’s Scots have posted a .797 winning percentage which ranks No. 7 nationally. His 248 victories during the decade are the sixth best by any school
MC Coaching Staff within the NCAA Division III. His Scots have captured eight Great South Athletic Conference championships since joining the league in 2000. With 568 career victories, Randy Lambert is one of the most successful NCAA Division III coaches. He is currently ranked 7th in the country among active head coaches and 10th among all-time coaches for most victories. Backed by its consistency in winning and its up-tempo style of play, his program is considered one of the best in the nation. Lambert’s career record is 568-237 for a winning percentage of .706. Lambert, his wife Alane, daughter Kami, and sons Jason and Wes, reside in Maryville.

Wallace signed a scholarship with Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tenn.(a junior college at the time), in the fall of 1989, and played two years for the Red Hawks before earning his associate’s degree. Wallace then transferred to
Maryville College in 1991 and helped the Scots to 25-4 and 20-6 records, two national tournaments (including an appearance in the Elite Eight) and No. 6 and No. 20 national rankings. He worked for two years under Coach Randy Lambert as a student assistant and received his bachelor’s degree in 1995, majoring in history with a minor in political science for teacher licensure. Great South Athletic Conference ABOUT THE GREAT SOUTH ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The purpose of the Great South Athletic Conference is to provide an association through which the membership may encourage organized competition in intercollegiate sports. In particular, we recognize athletics as integral to the campus life program of our students and as essential to the total development of our student-athletes. We direct significant institutional resources to our athletic programs to assure that student-athletes have appropriate coaching, facilities, equipment and opportunities for travel to compete against other conference schools. The GSAC is made up of NCAA Division III (full-fledged or provisional status) schools located in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. To celebrate a full decade of membership, the league unveiled a new logo and identity for the 2010-11 season. The old logo and color scheme served the conference for 10 years (2000-2010).
MC GSAC Players of the Year
GSAC HISTORY The Great South Athletic Conference was founded in 1999 as a group of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III member institutions from the Southeast with similar academic and athletic interests. Charter members include Fisk University, LaGrange College, Maryville College, Piedmont College and Stillman College. In 2002, Huntingdon College and women’s colleges Agnes Scott College and Wesleyan College were granted membership. In 2003, Spelman College and Wesleyan College were admitted to the GSAC on a provisional basis and given full membership status in 2005. Salem College, a women’s school in Winston Salem, NC, becomes the conference’s eighth member for the 2009-10 season. Stillman dropped out of the conference following the 2001-02 season. Fisk University dropped out of the conference following the 2005-06 season. Covenant College, location on top of Lookout Mountain in northwest Georgia, joined the conference in Spring 2010 and began playing in Fall 2010. Covenant is currently completing its requirements for NCAA Division III provisional status.
