2010-11 Outlook WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Maryville College Fighting Scots Season Preview 2010-11
Head Coach Darrin Travillian has seen his Scots post a 41-15 mark during his first two seasons with MC as an assistant. He helped Maryville to a 26-1 record within Great South challenges the past two campaigns. Following a run through the Great South Athletic Conference to claim the regular season title, a pair of wins in the GSAC Tournament earned MC their 7th conference title last season. The title earned MC their 17th trip to the NCAA Division III post-season tournament, their second since 2006. The Scots have a tough task to replace a three-year starter and national leader in assists at the point guard position. Lailah Farmer will bring her energy, speed, court vision and leadership to the position where she averaged five points and four assists per game as a freshman. Ashley Elliot, returning from an injury last season, will also be looked at to direct MC’s dribblen-drive offense. “Ashley is a knock down shooter from beyond the arc,” stated Coach Travillian. This pair of playmakers will be a key factor in MC’s offensive efficiency this season. On the perimeter will be sophomore Janell Menard. Janell has a mid-range game that should earn her conference, regional, and national accolades for years to come. Senior Paige Sevier is one of the best three-point shooters on the NCAA Division III level. Sevier averaged 9.6 points a game last year while hitting 45% (56-for-123) of her treys. Senior Alexis Rouvelas, a team captain, has transformed her game to be a complete player. Her 9.1 points a game and four rebounds a contest helped her earn All-GSAC honors as a junior. CJ Dake and Kiera Payne will excel at the forward/ guard position. CJ is an outstanding passer and rebounder that can lock-down any opponent’s top scorer with her defensive intensity. Each of these contributors are tireless workers at each end of the court and their hustle is contagious. They are noted for their defense, but each has numerous offensive skills to take the ball to the hoop. Maryville has produced back-to-back GSAC Players of the Year and All-Americans in the post, both directed by Travillian. MC will look to replace Alison Harmon’s 12.6 points and 5.9 rebounds a game with sophomore Tayler Smith and transfer Whitney Mitchell. They may not
have the physical presence that their predecessor possessed, but the long and athletic duo can play solid defense in the paint and score with their back to the basket. Key newcomers to MC’s lineup will be freshman Lauren Burnett and sophomore Tara Heyboer. Burnett has exceptional shooting skills including a high percentage mid-range jumper. Heyboer, a former GSAC Freshman of the Year, returns from a knee injury and has the ability to score inside and outside for the Scots. The Scots took on a challenging non-conference schedule before finishing with a pair of 8-game winning streaks heading into the NCAA Tournament. Coach Travillian will challenge his squad with a very competitive list of opponents. A strong non-conference schedule featuring NCAA Division III teams such as Centre, Greensboro, Emory, Oglethorpe, Wartburg and Berry as well as NCAA Division II rival Carson Newman, will allow Coach Travillian and his staff to push their program toward regional and national prominence while preparing his Scots for another league title and post season appearance. “I’m thrilled and humbled to have the privilege to coach this outstanding group,” stated Coach Travillian. “It might take some time to establish roles and develop continuity, but I think we have the depth and athleticism to apply pressure on the ball and to get out in the passing lanes to trigger our offensive attack. Once we gel on both ends of the floor, this team will be fun to watch as they share the ball well, shoot it well, and thrive on getting up and down the floor.”

President DR. TOM BOGART President, Maryville College
The 2010-11 academic year is my first at Maryville College. It has already been a rewarding time as I have begun to work alongside the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other friends of the college. As a candidate for president, I was often asked about my management style. My reply evoked the metaphor of a coach. A good coach recruits outstanding players, puts them in positions where they can be successful, and helps them work together towards a common goal. This metaphor was not invented; rather it reflects my college experience as a member of the soccer team. Because my approach to professional life is strongly influenced by my experience as a student-athlete, I’m especially excited
to join the Scots this year. At Maryville College, we work to develop the whole person. Our basketball program provides the chance for students to excel out of the classroom to complement their rigorous curricular experience. It also gives the entire community a rallying point, cheering for the team regardless of the outcome on the court. Our ideals of community are expressed in the Covenant: Scholarship, Respect, and Integrity. I can think of no better way to describe our aspirations for our basketball program than as an expression of those high ideals. I look forward to seeing you at the games, where you can tell me about our wonderful traditions and we can make new memories for the future.
Dr. Tom Bogart President, Maryville College

Great South Athletic Conference ABOUT THE GREAT SOUTH ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
The purpose of the Great South Athletic Conference is to provide an association through which the membership may encourage organized competition in intercollegiate sports. In particular, we recognize athletics as integral to the campus life program of our students and as essential to the total development of our student-athletes. We direct significant institutional resources to our athletic programs to assure that student-athletes have appropriate coaching, facilities, equipment and opportunities for travel to compete against other conference schools. The GSAC is made up of NCAA Division III (full-fledged or provisional status) schools located in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. To celebrate a full decade of membership, the league unveiled a new logo and identity for the 2010-11 season. The old logo and color scheme served the conference for 10 years (2000-2010).
GSAC HISTORY
The Great South Athletic Conference was founded in 1999 as a group of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III member institutions from the Southeast with similar academic and athletic interests. Charter members include Fisk University, LaGrange College, Maryville College, Piedmont College and Stillman College. In 2002, Huntingdon College and women’s colleges Agnes Scott College and Wesleyan College were granted membership. In 2003, Spelman College and Wesleyan College were admitted to the GSAC on a provisional basis and given full membership status in 2005. Salem College, a women’s school in Winston Salem, NC, becomes the conference’s eighth member for the 2009-10 season. Stillman dropped out of the conference following the 200102 season. Fisk University dropped out of the conference following the 2005-06 season. Covenant College, location on top of Lookout Mountain in northwest Georgia, joined the conference in Spring 2010 and began playing in Fall 2010. Covenant is currently completing its requirements for NCAA Division III provisional status.
