HIGH JINKS & HORSE PLAY

Teens are tricky customers. You know they are exhausted going into the holidays and need some downtime but will also need entertaining once they’ve chilled out a bit. And entertaining doesn’t mean sandcastles and a swimming pool; it means quad biking, surfing, scuba diving, skiing, zip-lining, getting up close and personal with incredible wildlife and mind blowing Facebook-worthy sights. Our Consultants have put on their thinking caps to come up with some fantastic holidays that teens will love, and parents will have a pretty cool time too.

THE SCOOP It’s not a happy holiday unless everyone is having a good time. Older children are always the hardest to keep entertained, which is why we are introducing Crew. It’s not a kids club; it’s a cool activity programme for children from 11 years old. It’s led by energetic and engaging Crew Leaders, runs for at least 18-hours over 6 days and is full of fun and varied activities. There’s no base camp, no timetables just prearranged meeting points at different times of the day, taking into account the heat, ability of the group and location of the resort. The action includes available watersports and land-based activities from scuba diving, wakeboarding and paddle boarding to zip wiring, rock climbing and bike treks. Crew is available during the school holidays at Costa Navarino in Greece, Sun Gardens in Croatia and Anassa in Cyprus. It’s just a brilliant and relaxed way to meet new friends and try something new.

Begin the journey of discovery in Tokyo, staying at the chic Mandarin Oriental Tokyo. This sprawling metropolis has a life of its own with an energy that is hard to ignore. Spend your days exploring the ancient sites in perfect conjunction with the modern trendy areas such Harajuku, Shibuya and Akihabara where the teenager is king and manga and cosplay rule the streets. Get hands on with a sushi lesson with some of the freshest ingredients you will ever find at The Tsukiji Fish Market or practise your calligraphy or Taiko drumming skills with private lessons with renowned masters of these arts. From Tokyo, jump on the super high speed bullet train to Kyoto and make the Hyatt Regency Kyoto your base. The city offers an enormous wealth of culture including the famous Golden Temple, Ryoanji Temple and Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. However, it’s not all temples and shrines, you can take part in Samurai sword lessons, stroll through Gion to catch sight of Geisha heading out on their evening appointments as well as day trips out to Nara, walking through the ancient capital with free roaming deer in the park. Then, it’s back on the bullet train to Hakone National Park, to relax and take life slowly. Stay at Gora Kadan, a traditional Japanese Inn or Ryokan and be truly pampered, as well as enjoying amazing food. Spend your mornings taking walks through the stunning mountainous countryside and cruises along Lake Ashi, with the chance to see Lake Ashi and then afternoons spent relaxing in your own private onsen - open air bath - made warm by naturally hot spring water found in the area.

This epic off-the-beaten-track family adventure set deep within the Arctic Circle is simply packed with wholesome wilderness experiences certain to capture the imagination of your teens. Fly to the Arctic Circle and start at the Nellim Wilderness Hotel where you can set out by sleigh in search of the Northern Lights, followed by dinner by the campfire. The traditional sport of Finland is cross-country skiing which, as well as being heaps of fun, is a fantastic way to explore the rolling forests and high fells of Lapland. Snowshoeing is also a must-try, whether by the short grey-light hours during the winter months or as part of a Northern Lights hunting trek. The most thrilling and authentic way to reach your teepee hideaway is by husky-pulled sleigh, traversing the mesmerising white-blanket landscape at speed with the dogs panting up ahead of you. Pick up useful tips from the husky mushers before taking the reins yourself and leading your team through the surrounding expanse of snow-clad trees and frozen lakes to your wilderness home. This is where survival skills come into play and you learn how to break through the thick ice in search of fish and fresh water before chopping wood for the campfire by which your chef prepares the freshly-caught ingredients. Your adventure continues with an exhilarating snowmobile safari where, en-route, you can choose to visit a local reindeer herder, get up close with the animals and learn traditional reindeer husbandry and Sami handicraft. You can also visit Lapland in summer for a totally different experience of abundant wildlife, vivid colour, forest foraging, kayaking, trekking and the midnight sun.

The Lodge owners, Will and Emma Craig, are passionate about wildlife conservation, adding a really interesting and personal side to your safari. From here fly out to the Maasai Mara to Serian camp, if you are here in August or September you may catch sight of the Great Migration, where 2 million wildebeest and zebra flood the grassy savannah plains and big cats lie in wait for the perfect moment to pounce. Jackson Hole may be top of Mum and Dad’s ski bucket-list for obvious reasons - record-breaking snowfall and fabulous steep terrain, but there’s a whole heap of cool stuff that will cut it from a teen perspective as well. For action on the slopes, the Fall Line Camps pitch themselves to teenagers who dream big and know they need to start small to get there. From rip turns to dropping cliffs, teens will get their mountain kicks at every turn. Wintery fun in Jackson Hole isn’t just about the skiing - there’s plenty of action away from the slopes too. We recommend taking a break from ripping up the pistes to spend time exploring more of what Jackson Hole has to offer. One of the most rewarding and fun things to do as a family is a Winter Wildlife Safari taking in the National Elk Refuge and Grand Teton National Park with everyone vying to spot wintering elk, bison, deer, moose, fox, coyote and if you’re really lucky, wolves.
