Q

Table plan politics are getting me down, what do I do? Spit the wedding dummy and get rid of the table plan – it’s so last season anyway. Trestle tables are the new way forward; they look cool and modern, plus if you allow guests to pick their own seats, it eliminates a substantial amount of social politik. Apprehensive about giving guests free rein? Give the table plan another chance. After all, now you only have to worry about who’s sitting directly next to who!

the right fit Want to get in shape for your wedding but haven’t been close to exercising since a lacklustre game of netball in high school? Look out for a 5k happening in the months leading up to your big day to keep you training and focused!

Q

How to have blog-worthy wedding snaps? By setting off colourful smoke canisters, of course! This lovely moment was snapped in Mexico, but we think Scotland’s dramatic landscapes would make just as beautiful a backdrop. Check out 21CC Fireworks, who can help you pick the right colour and provide a technician on the day for £350!

I want to go a weekend abroad with my hens, but I’m worried some of them can’t afford it… Money talk is always awkward, but if you want to go away to relax before the wedding, be open with your hens from the start. Let them know you understand if they can’t make it, and won’t be annoyed if they have other commitments. Then, it’s probably worth having a night out at home for everyone who couldn’t come, so that nobody feels left out.

Q

I want a mobile cocktail bar, but don’t have the budget. Can I do it myself? There are some DIY approaches that go easier on the purse strings. Look up simple mocktail recipes online (grapefruit spritzer is an SWD fave), chop up some fruit to keep it fresh and pretty, then chuck it all into big decanters. Buy some bottles of flavoured spirits and get some drink measurement thimbles so guests don’t go overboard, then set up on a table along with some signage. Voila – your own ‘Choose Your Booze’ cocktail station!

Spotlight on CHARLOTTE BALBIER

charlotte

Charlotte Balbier reveals all about her new boho-glam collection Untamed Love, and tells us why every bride needs to know about the versatility of bridal separates

How did you get into bridalwear design – what’s your story? I have a family background in the bridal industry reaching back to my grandparents, who manufactured gowns and owned a chain of bridal stores. Also, my mother is awardwinning dress designer Amanda Wyatt; such a talent to have learned from! Bridal gowns, materials and brides have surrounded me ever since I was a young “I’m a boho girl, so it was only natural girl at heart for me to progress into who loves the family business – but I wanted to put my stamp on all things the industry with a fresh, glamorous!” new and modern brand.

Who is the Charlotte Balbier bride? A free-spirited, feminine woman who is confident in her fashion and bridal style

Where do you find inspiration for your dresses? I’m a boho girl at heart who loves all things glamorous. It’s unusual to have two very distinctive styles but it’s what makes me who I am! I celebrate this with my new Untamed Love collection, in which I embrace my inner hippy with boho-inspired gowns along with more glamorous styles.

Tell us more about Untamed Love… The quality and palette of fabrics is second to none: tulle, silks, French laces, rich Mikado fabrics and our specially designed chiffon, made in-house and totally exclusive to Charlotte Balbier. We have two new floral fabrics for 2017 and my love of playing with

colour palettes is also evident – alongside traditional ivory hues are antique gold, pewter, apricot and blush shades. It’s fun, playful, and boho-inspired with a twist!

You also have a new separates collection – what can brides expect from that? These are interchangeable separates that allow the bride to build and create her own individual look, whatever her style. Maybe a satin slip with a lace topper and satin sash? Or a ballgown skirt, crop top and lace reverse bolero?

1

Do you have a favourite dress you’ve designed over the years? I love the ‘Charlotte’ gown I wore on my own big day. It had a silk organza full ballgown skirt with a deep French lace trim, a fitted and boned bodice, sheer tulle neckline and threequarter-length sleeves. The cathedral-length train had diamante buttons all the way down.

Which celebrity would you love to design a wedding dress for? Clémence Poésy – her unique style and understated chic is perfect for my separates collection.

And finally, what would you be doing if you weren’t a dress designer? I love my dog Buster Bear so much that I’d probably be working with animals. He is very helpful to the Charlotte Balbier brand – every morning we take a long walk together and I can brainstorm what steps to take next!

Sassi Halford

These sleeved dresses are so elegant and modern

We were talking about Sassi Holford’s amazing catwalk show long after the last model had strutted off the runway, hotly debating which dress was our favourite. Because the thing with Sassi is that while she has her own very distinctive style, she somehow manages to cater for all brides. Her dresses are flattering and wearable without ever being boring. Editor Natasha especially loved the feather-trimmed top with asymmetric skirt, below centre.

How beautiful is the colourful floral train on this dress? Love it!

BEAUTY CONSCIENCE Lots of you ask about crueltyfree beauty brands, so I’m delighted to point you in the direction of the eponymous, ethical range recently launched by Scottish MUA Sara Hill. None of her products are tested on animals (she prefers to test on grannies) and the majority are vegan too. The Little Pop concealers (£16.50) are my current fave: creamy, great coverage, no-nonsense. Buy online at sarahill.com.

3

WELL GEL Off on honeymoon soon? If you can’t eke out your wedding mani-pedi, don’t worry. Bourjois has just launched a 10-shade range of La Laque Gel nail polishes (£6.99) that make a manicured finish easy to achieve. The intensely pigmented gel colour formulas last well, require no UV light and can be removed with normal nail polish, so your nails won’t get damaged. Perf.

4

TOUCH BASE Amazing new foundation alert: Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation (£35) is perfect for any brides-to-be looking for natural, radiant coverage and that muchcoveted bridal glow. Inspired by the gentle light imparted by candlelight, it’s best suited to dry skin (though with the right primer, I reckon it’d be fine for oily types too).

LIP SERVICE

I fell in love with this bridal beauty look at Anny Linn’s White Gallery show this year. If you fancy rocking a bold lip on your wedding day, I highly recommend Urban Decay’s awesome Vice lipstick. At £15 a pop it’s reasonably priced for a high-end lippy, comes in 100 shades (which means you can match it to the flowers in your hair, obv) and offers a variety of finishes, from matte to sheer shimmer.

A NEW CLASSIC Stop the press: Chanel is set to launch a new No.5 fragrance in September guaranteed to become a go-to fragrance for brides. Lighter and fresher than the original, this is for you if you like clean scents. It’s been created by perfumer Olivier Polge, and Lily Depp will be the face of the fragrance (yep, makes me feel old too).

hink of Portugal and chances are you associate it with long, languid beach holidays rather than city breaks, but capital city Lisbon is fast becoming a popular destination for couples seeking a shorthaul getaway. And according to recent research by the Post Office, it’s the sixth-cheapest city break in Europe, making it a budget-friendly option for honeymooners. Affordability aside, Lisbon has lots to offer. Built across seven hills, it’s a joy to explore: winding cobbled streets, pretty pastel buildings and spectacular views from the peak of every slope. An illustrious history ensures plenty of cultural landmarks to visit along the way, from the Moorish São Jorge Castle and the iconic Belém Tower to the 16th-century Jerónimos monastery. Oh, and sightseeing sustenance must come from Lisbon’s famous custard tarts (delicious delicacies known as Pasteis de Nata), so be sure to stop off at a pastelaria on your travels! Lisbon is Europe’s sunniest capital city, so if all that sunshine has you hankering for the beach, you’re a halfhour journey from sweeping stretches of sand and sea. The Cascais-Estoril coastline to the west of the city is the most popular with tourists, while surfers tend to make for the wild and rugged Costa da Caparica coastline. There’s even a nudist beach, Praia do Meco, if you’re so inclined…

imberley Walsh has long been a favourite here at SWD, effortlessly marrying her glam personal style with a laid-back, family-oriented attitude. We knew we would just love her big day, and she and new hubby Justin Scott didn’t disappoint with their envy-inducing wedding and honeymoon in Barbados back in February. The couple were surrounded by close family and friends as they tied the knot at Bellevue Plantation House on the beautiful Caribbean island. Kimberley even had her two best mates from her Girls Aloud days, Cheryl and Nicola, as blushing bridesmaids. For the reception, the couple and

their guests ate dinner and danced at The Cliff Restaurant, a stunning venue with amazing views over the sea. When the wedding was over, friends and family returned to the UK while the bride and groom stayed in Barbados with young son Bobby for a family honeymoon at the Bellevue Plantation, a historic Bahamian villa. They were seen frolicking on a beach with Kim sporting the newest celeb bride fashion trend – monogrammed bikini bottoms. Later, after baby Bobby’s bedtime, Kimberly posted a hilarious photo of her and hubby Justin having shots poured into their mouths at a boat party!

“Gemma is my best friend. She organised the stag do, and for the day we made her a dress from Murray tartan, to match me and my dad’s kilts. We didn’t want to conform to tradition and she did a great job.” MIRRORBOX PHOTOGRAPHY

“Ours was a Jewish wedding, and the tradition is for the men to make speeches, but I insisted that I would get the chance to speak too. This meant I got to introduce “my husband” rather than Stewart introducing “his wife.” The guests loved it.”

“ M Y B O U Q U E T WA S M A D E F R O M PA P E R ” “I made my bouquet from the envelopes of letters that David and I sent to each other when we were living in different places. They were such a success that afterwards I launched my own paper and stationery business, Origami Fox.”
